Book Description
Meet art historian Vicky Bliss, She is as beautiful as she is brainy--with unassailable courage, insatiable curiosity, and an expertise in lost museum treasures that often leads her into the most dangerous of situations.
A missing masterwork in wood, the last creation of a master carver who died in the violent tumult of the sixteenth century, may be hidden in a medieval German castle in the town of Rothenburg. The prize has called to Vicky Bliss, drawing her and an arrogant male colleague into the forbidding citadel and its dark secrets. But the treasure hunt soon turns deadly. Here, where the blood of the long forgotten damned stains ancient stones, Vicky must face two equally perilous possibilities. Either a powerful supernatural evil inhabits this place. . .or someone frighteningly real is willing to kill for what Vicky is determined to find.

Introducing Vicky Bliss.......2007-09-01
The first Vicky Bliss novel, this story introduces us to the large blonde academic who is interested in the legend of a lost Riemenschneider sculpture. She engages in a bet with a fellow academic, Tony, who bets that if he can find it before she can, she has to marry him.
Peters writes with ascerbic wit and wonderful characters. Vicky Bliss is an independent thinker, capable of making intriguing decisions without any help.
This is a great series- I recommend it to any mystery lover!
COULD NOT PUT THIS SERIES DOWN!!!.......2005-09-17
Elizabeth Peters books are fun, comical, gripping mysteries -- read them all!
Vicky is different from Amelia Peabody (she's tall, 20something, and a blonde bombshell with curves). Peters' spends a lot of time trying to establish this new character, and Vicky's figure/views are mentioned a lot at first (which turned my mom off of it initially), but it gets better.
==>> Why read this book? BECAUSE THE SEQUELS ARE PHENOMENAL!!
<
<==
I COULD NOT put the 2ND BOOK DOWN (Street of the 5 Moons), and when I was done I immediately drove to the library for the rest. I even skipped the 3rd book (because the library didn't have it) because I was ABSOLUTELY HOOKED, and the 4th and 5th were so good I didn't get any sleep! I don't feel bad about skipping the 3rd book, but I'm certainly glad I read this 1st one to get established. Don't pass up this series!!!
The first 'Vicky Bliss' mystery.......2004-02-16
This is the introductory book of the Vicky Bliss series. Dr Bliss is an art historian teaching in a small midwestern college. She has decided never to marry since she has discovered that the only thing that intimidates most men more than a tall woman is a smart tall woman and Vicky is both. Another member of the faculty, Tony, is also tall and smart and quite taken with Vicky. The two stumble across a reference to a long missing art work and are soon off to Germany to track it down, in competition with each other. They find that they are not the only ones seeking this piece. The trail leads to a castle turned hotel complete with a ghost, secret passages and damsel in distress.
This book was written in 1973 and does show its age a bit. If you are looking for the mysterious John Smythe of the later books he does not appear here but we do get the first appearance of Schmidt. While she is not as captivating a Amelia Peabody, Vicky is charming in her own way. The series makes for an enjoyable, light hearted read.
--Mystery, Intrigue and Art History--.......2003-07-06
This is the first story in the Vicky Bliss mystery series and although, it's not absolutely necessary to read the stories in chronological order, it really does help to understand the background of the main characters and frankly, it makes reading the books even more enjoyable. In BORROWER OF THE NIGHT, Vicky Bliss, art historian and college professor finds a reference in a book that might lead to the discovery of a missing masterpiece by Tilman Riemenschneider, a very famous German sculptor.
Tony, Vicky's boyfriend and colleague, challenges her to see which of them can locate the missing treasure first. Their information leads them to visit Rothenberg, Germany, and an ancient castle. Several other people are also on the trail of the missing treasure, including Herr Dr. Schmidt and a wealthy American named George. Gorgeous Vicky is in her glory when she collects many admirers among the group, but the beautiful young countess who lives in the castle seems to have captured the interest of Tony. What can be more sinister than an old castle with secret passages and a history of evil inhabitants?
I listened to the audiotapes of this book read by Barbara Rosenblat. It was helpful to hear the pronunciations of the German words and her narration was wonderful.
If you're intrigued enough to want to read this series in order, here they are: BORROWER OF THE NIGHT, STREET OF THE FIVE MOONS, SILHOUETTE IN SCARLET, TROJAN GOLD and NIGHT TRAIN TO MEMPHIS. These are all excellent stories and I only wish that Elizabeth Peters would write more of them.
Vicky is no Amelia.......2003-05-12
This book was enjoyable - compared to many other authors, it was excellent, but compared to Peters's other works, it is merely good. I've been hooked on the Amelia Peabody series for years, and in my opinion this isn't quite as good as those books. The characters aren't as well developed, and the plot didn't grip me - I didn't feel the usual urgency to find out what would happen right away. However, it's still a fun adventure and full of the wit I've come to expect from Peters. I would recommend this to anyone who knows and loves Elizabeth Peters, but newbies should start with Crocodile on the Sandbank or another of Amelia's exploits.

Super Reader.......2007-08-02
If someone else has said that this is disappointing, sub-par or not well-received, then, they are right. Absolutely below average. (Average story rating, 2.8) Not sure what the editor was thinking, but having a bunch of writer joke Jerry Cornelius stories in what is ostensibly on the surface suggested to be an Elric collection = very bad idea. Throw in Glogauer, and even worse. Likely to annoy everyone, then.

Customer Reviews:
My least favorite.......2003-10-06
This was my least favorite Warhammer book so far. The action is all on a primitive planet which seems better suited for the WH fantasy series than WH40K sci-fi. The action is few and far between. The ending is very good, but doesn't make up for the rest of the book.
It was a Rough one...........2003-10-02
This book was a real rough one to finish. It seemed like a 100 meter sprint, run in molases. Not one of the Warhammer 40,000/Black Librarys best. If you are looking for the usual fast paced and exciting story that you find in books like "First & the only", "Storm of Iron" or "Nightbringer", you will be very disappointed.
Strong beginning, [weak] ending........2003-04-04
Strong beginning, [weak] ending. This book starts as one of the best books ever written in the whole Black Library, WH40K universe. Its rich details, interesting plot and story line paint a picture of normal peoples living in WH40K universe trying to get about their life, not knowing anything of the great war in the universe. It reminds me of the Wheel of Time from Robert Jordan or those kinds of books, richly detailed and very "human nature".
But the book takes a turn for the worst, the more it goes toward the end, it goes from innocence to damnation, from interesting to dark, from richly painted environment, to basic structure, even the story loses strength at the end, the last half of the book [is bad], but the beginning is so wonderful, if you don't mind the terrible ending, and you're curious about the agriculture world in WH40K, get it, if not you might want to pass on this one.
Not The Usual Warhammer 40K Story..........2002-05-03
...of violent battles. I found this book to be a real trial to finish and glad when it finally ended! Unlike the previous reviwer, I can't bear to read this again. If you're looking for more of the Warhammer 40K genre, this isn't for you, but if you simply want to know more about the Warhammer 40K universe (and a limited view at that), then you may consider this one.
Too smart...To it's own detriment........2001-12-19
The Black Library is admittedly a purveyor of literature that would be considered pulp by those who have nothing better to do but sit about firelit studies and determine such things. Brian Craig is not a pulp writer. His works have battles yes, and at times they are exceedingly violent, but thats what Black Library is all about. The true book is a tale of realization, a study of motives and the passions that drive the forces at battle. In the Warhammer worlds Chaos is the undeniable enemy, but yet we never see things from their side. Pawns of Chaos explores the life of those who are sided with chaos and why they are not evil, and those people who serve the imperium and why they are not Just. The first reading left me a bit unsatisfied but after I began to think about the morals of the story I reread the book and was quite pleased by the tale. Be warned this is not the typical Warhammer Tale: Good party goes on quest to fight evil- battles ensue good triumphs more or less. This is so much more.

great book to get through cutting.......2006-01-04
For any bodybuilders who are looking for something different and good to eat while cutting down, this is a great book. The best part is that the food is very simple to make, so even the most carb-depleted bodybuilders can prepare it. There are definitely a lot of ways to help you modify you diet in a way to make it still taste good. I should also state that this is ONLY a cook book, and dont expect it to tell you how to prepare your diet...
Not for the ordinary family.......2002-04-05
I found this book to be almost useless for the "family" although it may be great for the body builders. I could not find some of the ingredients such as the sodium free Accent or sodium free Mrs. Dash, which is in the majority of the recipes. I also could not find the low fat pancake mix at our local grocery. I'm assuming that you can find these ingredients in your "big cities".
Can't find ingredients.......2002-04-03
I could not find some of the ingredients that were listed in the recipes. Most of them called for (sodium free) Accent or Mrs. Dash. All of which were not available at my local grocery. Some called for Sweet 'N Low in main dishes and a lot called for wine....which I do not keep in the house. I did not find these recipes helpful to me in my fight for a more fat free lifestyle.
fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-04-25
this book is by far the best cook book i have ever bought.this book is a must for any bodybuilder the recepies are low in fat and sugar. i highly recomend it for any body trying to gain lean mass.
tasty!.......1999-11-19
So many cook books for bodybuilders are really useless because they have recipes with way too many ingredients or the books have recipes that are too fancy, complicated or intricate for the person whos suppose to be eating non stop. So, this book was different. I use a lot of the recipes, they come out fine and taste pretty good too.
Book Description
Inside this comprehensive work you will find plenty of practical how-to information covering everything from hereditary health concerns to selection and care. * Grooming for show and utility * A photo essay on ear cropping * How the Bouvier's cattle dog heritage presents a training challenge in schutzhund * Tips for blending more than one Bouvier into a harmonious household
Customer Reviews:
If You Love Bouviers..........2006-02-15
If you love Bouviers, you will love this book. It is worth every penny! Great history, photos, and packed all the information you need as a potential Bouvier owner or as an admirer of the breed. Pedigrees, puppy selection, grooming... it's all there. A must have if you plan to own a Bouvier. I keep mine on my bedside table... when I'm not carrying it around with me. (Yup, it's heavy.) This is the best Bouvier book I've ever found and definitely the most thorough.
Detailed history of breed, special emphasis on police work.......1999-01-15
As a new and first time owner of a Bouvier des Flandres puppy, I appreciated many of the details, historical, raising and breeding. The book emphasizes the Bouvier as a Schultzhund dog, which is the author's perogative. I would have appreciated more information on training of a Bouvier for a pet. Many dog owners desire a lovable pet not a champion police dog. The author is an important breeder of Bouviers and he has many valid points to keep the Bouviers to a standard. I myself researched breeders for several months as it is a problem. My summary statement is that the book is worth the money. If there is a revision, I hope the author will broaden his interests in the breed for the general dog owner.
The Bouvier book everyone should read.......1998-12-09
A most informative easy to read book, giving accurate detail and information about the Bouvier des Flandres.
Engle accurately portrays the breed in easy to read text........1998-03-04
Engle does an excellant job of portraying Bouviers as the working family dog they really are. All Bouvier owners should read this book. Kathleen Ryan
This is it! The book that does the breed justice!.......1996-08-02
If you are a Bouvier des Flandres fancier or just think that
you would like to know more about the breed, buy this book!
History, bloodlines, showing, training and grooming are all
covered in detail.
Best of all, this book does what we wish all breed books
did. It gives us an HONEST picture of a noble breed without
the sugar-coated praise that makes too many people buy the
wrong dog. Read this book and you won't go wrong when you
look into Bouviers.

Great Cigar Stuff for Collectors (Schiffer Book for Collectors)
ASIN: 0887409415 |
Book Description
From the end of the Civil War until the explosive popularity of the cigarette in the early twentieth century. the cigar was king. For the pleasure and convience of cigar smokers a wide variety of smoking accessories were manufactured, including cigar cutters and lighters. The cutters range from simple vest pocket models to ingenious mechanical contraptions that would occupy a prominent place on the counter of the local tobacconist. In between are beautifully sculpted Vienna bronze and wooden desk models. In many cases these are combined with lighters, to offer the smoker full-service convenience. The lighters range from alcohol dips to electric devices. They are sometimes cast as stunning figures or are elegantly formed lamps, using blown glass or pierced tin. Beautiful color photographs document these wonderful objects, accompanied by concise, informative descriptions. The text places the cutters in their historical context and contains helpful information. A value guide is included.

Book Description
From the early 1960s through the early 70s, Pop Art swept the industrialized world. Iconoclastic, rebellious, and immediately popular, the new movement found its roots in an unprecedentedly prosperous consumer society. Encouraged by galleries and publishers who catered to a new collectors' market, many Pop artists were drawn to the creation of editions on paper and in multiples. 60 vibrant examples by such American icons as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and by such European artists as Richard Hamilton, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gerhard Richter, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Sigmar Polke, are organized according to the themes of mass media consumer culture, politics, erotica and more. All of the works included herein are from The Prints and Illustrated Books Collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, an exceptionally rich repository of such work.

Pop Prints.......2000-05-01
This cataloge of the recent exhibition "Pop Impressions Europe/USA" at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, added immensely to to my understanding of the pop art movement. it makes it evident that pop was a global movement and not solely American. Also, the organization of the book is themeatic, with such catagories as "Mass Media" and "Erotica" helping to clarify the feeling of the time period. "Pop Impressions" is also lavishly illustrated with color reproductions (almost one on every page), a necessity with this art movement.

Book Description
Juxtaposing contemporary artworks with the archeological wonders of Sicily may sound gimmicky, but the result, intelligently overseen by noted Italian art critic Alessandro Riva, provides some fascinating correspondences. The compositional style of a mosaic-like painting from Sandro Chia resonates with an ancient mosaic in the Piazza Armerina. A new Mimmo Rotella dacollage honors a bronze satyr recently rescued from the sea. There's even a place here for as conceptually minded an artist as Wim Delvoye, whose industrial canisters decorated in the manner of fine Dutch ceramics remind us that the amphoras they are placed among from the archaeological museum of Lipari were also utilitarian objects. Other participating artists are Luigi Ontani, Aron Demetz, Paola Gandolfi, Carlo Maria Mariani, Ryan Mendoza, Luca Pignatelli, and Velasco, their work an acknowledgement of how the ancient past has nurtured contemporary visions.

Book Description
Still vital and experimental in his late eighties, Mimmo Rotella, the Nouveau Raaliste legend who pioneered the art of effacage, in which he partially cancels images from popular magazines, here collects 30 of those works, many of them published for the first time. Satirical texts by hip Italian novelist Tiziano Scarpa, some 40 years his junior, confirm the continued relevance of Rotella's work.

Book Description
The art of Mimmo Rotella seems to be marked by a constant play of chance and intuition–”the mythical mental radar” to which the artist often alludes in his writings–and can be characterized by his attraction to the unusual, the unexplored and the unforeseen. Germano Celant traces Rotella’s work, in all of its diversified phases and periods from 1946 to the present, including the initial geometrical and pre-décollages works, the decollages and the verso of torn street posters, the artypo and emulsified canvases, the blanks, and the overpaintings. Rotella has been the subject of numerous retrospectives throughout Europe and the United States, including Grand Central Station, New York in 1994; Cuartel del Conde Duque, Madrid also in 1994; Galerie Ernst Hilger, Wien in 1999; and Palazzo della Triennale, Milan in 2004. In 1964, Rotella represented Italy in the Venice Biennale.
Customer Reviews:
What every art book should be.......2007-09-24
I pre-ordered this book months before the release date, not really knowing what to expect, but when it arrived I was blown away. As Amazon's description says, this book covers Rotella's work from 1946 to the present. The book is in chronological order, and there are hundreds of reproductions of his art, which are very detailed and often the size of a full page. The book also includes a good amount of text about the artist, information about some of the pieces, and more.
It does seem that there were quite a few pieces left out, most noticeably some of his works on Marilyn Monroe's film posters, but as far as I know, this is still the most comprehensive book ever put together on Rotella. It looks like a lot of hard work went into this book, and it paid off. One of my favorites.
