It is amazing how skillfully Jospehine Tey manages to carry off her plot premise. But she does. I can't say more for I don't want to spoil the pleasure in reading it, but will say that I found myself amazed at how I was carried along by this book. If you like horses and their world, you'll like it even more. It's also moving--but again, I can say nothing more! Read it and find out for yourself why I'm recommending it.

I'd been waiting over a year to get my hands on this book, and finally read it this summer. I've never read Josephine Tey before but was pleasantly surprised to encounter her modern writing style and ability to create questions in the reader's mind that would keep drawing me in.
I liked the book, but I wanted it to be so much more. Tey builds up to the final scenes and when the time came to conclude everything, it all fell flat. There could have been so much more development character-wise and plot-wise, but the author flew through the ending so quickly that I couldn't believe it. The final resolution itself is well written, but the scenes at the horse fair/races had so much more potential, and there were character relationships that frustrated me as Tey began the building process but then left it hanging.
I liked this book, and I would give it 3.5 stars- it got 4 for the stellar cover that first caught my attention. It lost the last one because I craved the development that the book lacked.
Brat Farrar.......2007-07-20
This was this first book I puchased with my own money at age 12 and I have read and reread it for almost 50 years. The story and the writing stand up to both time and a more critical taste. Characters are beautifully drawn and the mystery never palls. The other books by Miss Tey are old favorites as well,paricularly The Murders of Richard III. They are perhaps better appreciated by adults, but for good writing for young readers, I always suggest Brat Farrar. Besides, who can resist the horses!
Not bad, but no mystery.......2007-04-30
An interesting easy read, but a bit disappointing as a mystery. I'd figured out the key "mystery" by about page 50, so it was a bit tedious waiting for the characters to figure it out. A lot of other aspects of the story are well-telegraphed to the reader, too, so there isn't much suspense to be had. Still, the sense of time and place is well done, and I enjoyed all the horsey bits.

Brat Farrer is an English orphan who, after much travel, has decided to come back to England. He is soon mistaken for Simon Ashby of Latchetts by Alec Loding, a cousin of the Ashbys. Brat is talked into impersonating Patrick Ashby, Simon's older twin who allegedly committed suicide when they were ten. Now about to come of age and inherit Latchetts, the plan is for Brat to claim Patrick's inheritance and provide Alec with a lifetime allowance as reward. What Brat doesn't expect is to care so much for the family and, more than fearing his fraud being uncovered, he is in fear of his life.
It has been 30 years since I first read this book and I'd forgotten just how good it is. The story starts off gently at the first sentence. I immediately find myself caught up in the lives of the characters and environment Ms. Tey created. Soon the suspense begins to build and I can't put the book down. Even after the climax of the story, I am still kept in suspense until, at last, Ms. Tey kindly provides me with the resolution. I particularly wish other authors would take note that this completely enjoyable, engrossing and suspenseful story took only 276 pages to tell. If you've never read Brat Farrer or, as with me, it's been a long time, treat yourself and pick it up. Also, for the Dick Francis fans, it not only has horses, but a somewhat similar feel in its style. It was, as my British acquaintances say, brilliant!

An incredible buy.......2006-05-14
This book contains 3 delightful novels (of only 8 written) by Tey. All 3 are wonderful period pieces illustrating English life with terrific characterizations, dialog, psychological discussions, & moral dilemmas. The mystery tends to take a back seat to the basic novel, however. Tey also provides some pithy comments: From Miss Pym Disposes: p. 122: As a psychologist she began to suspect she was a very good teacher of French.
From The Franchise Affair: p. 213: The Governor; to whom a tear in the eye was just a drop of H2O.
p. 295: If you see a giraffe once a year it remains a spectacle; if you see it daily it becomes part of the scenery.
p. 298: The less he knows about a thing the more strongly he feels about it.
From Brat Farrar: p. 414: If you thought about the unthinkable long enough it became quite reasonable.
While each novel is probably a 4.5 star (or close), IMHO the collection rates higher. Enjoy this fantastic collection!

Unusual and compelling historical fantasy.......2007-06-29
The middle two volumes were focused purely on the desert, but this volume opens in Outremer, showing something of what happened to the people who were left behind. Magister Fulke is still intent on war against Surayon, and when he marches out, Sieur Anton marches with him -- still hoping to find his errant squire Marron.
Those of the desert have a more pressing concern -- finding and rescuing Julianne, who was abducted on her wedding night. They follow the trail to a trade city on the border between Outremer and the lands of the Sharai.
That's her second wedding night. She ran away from her first husband on her first wedding night, hating to leave him but following a more urgent promise. Imber hasn't giving up hope of finding her, and joins a march to the trade City in search of the coming war.
Then there's the mysterious preacher and his flock of the not-quite-healed; an army, perhaps, for someone who chooses to use it that way.
And they're all aimed at Surayon, with one tiny and personal battle near the end of this volume paving the way for a much larger battle in the next and final volume of the series.
This is only the first half of what was originally published in the UK as a single volume, but stands well on its own as a prelude to the final twisting together of the various plot strands that have been laid out over the course of the series. Even now it is impossible to predict how events will play out and whether any of the characters will find what they desire. It's beautifully written, as ever, and shows us still more of the characters and their world.

Hand of the King's Evils sets the stage for the sixth and concluding novel in the Outremer series, leading our cast of fascinating characters to the very borders of the mysterious Forbidden Land of Surayon itself. It is important to note that Chaz Brenchley's series was originally published as a trilogy, but the American publisher has broken the series down into six novels. This helps to explain the lack of true climax you will find at the end of this particular book. This is not to say nothing exciting happens here, however. The shocking ending of the previous book precipitates a great deal of action in these pages. The daughter of the King's Shadow has been abducted on her wedding night (making Julianne's score card read: Husbands 2, Wedding nights 0), right out from under the noses of her family and friends. As powerful as her father, the King's Shadow, is, he cannot see where Julianne has been taken, although it quickly becomes clear just who her abductor was. The lady's best friend Elisande also feels rather helpless, as even the djinni who now serves her proves unable or unwilling to rescue her friend. She and Julianne's father set out across the desert in search of Julianne, soon joined by Marron, the Ghost Walker whose blood runs with the power of the King's Daughter, and his companion Jemel. Somewhere behind them rides Hasan, Julianne's husband and the leader of an army of united Sharai warriors intent on recovering the lady and then taking their long-anticipated war to the kingdom of Outremer itself.
Unbeknownst to our party of heroes, other men are working their way to the borders of Surayon. Imber, Julianne's first husband, follows the call of a djinni to come, he hopes, to the aid of the bride he lost so precipitously; Sieur Anton d'Escrivey, whom we last met mourning the loss of the young Marron (with whom he enjoyed a most controversial of relationships) amidst a veritable sea of dead men on the grounds of Roc de Rancon, heads in the same direction amidst an army of Knights' Ransomers seeking to locate and lay waste to the hidden land of Surayon and its heretical people; a new character also follows a path to the same destination, a Preacher who heals the sick with a holy relic and leads a peasant army of the zombie-like benefactors of his healing magic on a quest to seek divine retribution against Surayon. As the book ends, the Folded Land is revealed to those around it for the first time in forty years, and the fate of this land and of the characters we have so faithfully followed throughout their journey to this time and place now hangs in the balance. The only certainty seems to be that war will come, that the army of the Sharai will battle the forces of Outremer, and that blood will fill the streets of the now-revealed Surayon.
The entire Outremer series is powerfully character-driven, and war itself will not change this fact. The primary characters have changed a great deal over the course of the first five novels, and my own reactions to them have shifted back and forth between admiration and disappointment, compassion and disgust, great sympathy and ambivalence. Still, they remain fascinating, particularly Marron the reluctant Ghost Walker and the mysterious Elisande. I no longer care very much for the histrionic and willful Julianne, but I am most anxious to see what becomes of everyone else. The potential reuniting of Marron and d'Escrivey will be particularly interesting to see (if it does indeed happen), especially inasmuch as Marron's loyal friend Jemel has sworn to kill d'Escrivey. I have some real problems with some of the actions of just about every character contained in these pages, yet Brenchley's writing will not let me abandon them nor let me rest until I know what becomes of them all.

This is the third and final installment to the Hellflower storyline. The story line is unbelievable and so full of details that you have to reread the book so many times. I love the little blurbs that happen before each chapter that discuss human evolution from the machines' standpoint and why we are destined to fail.

Excellent instruction for everyone. It explains, in detail, how to make the particular recipe by hand, with an electric mixer or with a bread machine. I would recommend it to anyone interested in good bread.
4 methods to mix each recipe.......2006-04-15
Some of the reasons I bought this book:
First, each recipe has mixing directions for using a stand mixer, a food processor, a bread machine, or by hand. Since I have each of these and have even mixed bread the old fashioned way with my hands, I like having all these options available.
Second, the recipes are more down to earth than many of the exotic bread machine cookbooks. They are more healthy and wholesome. The recipes utilize whole grains, but are not necessarily 100% whole grain. They utilize regular bread flour plus many different types of grain that the average joe would not normally associate with bread.
Some reviews have been critical that the recipes are not 100% whole grain. There are some 100% whole wheat recipes but not every recipe in the book is 100% whole grain. The problem here is using 100% whole wheat with another non-gluten 100% whole grain such as rye or spelt that has little or no gluten and getting the bread to rise properly. Many of the flours used in this book by themselves would not have enough gluten to make a decent loaf of bread and 100% whole wheat vs. bread flour also is challenged to make a decent loaf that rises and is not overly dense. Some of these exotic grains will only work if you use them to make quick, non yeast breads.
So, the 100% whole grain charge is only partly correct. For example, who would try to make a 100% whole rye flour bread? You can incorporate whole grains along with bread flour and still eat very healthy and have a much better tasting loaf
That being said, she does have an entire chapter devoted to non-wheat breads such as "Buckwheat & Spelt" bread.
My major critcism of the book is that just about every recipe I have tried with my bread machine, I had to add up to 30% more liquid than called for in the recipe. In fact, I usually just assume I need to add an extra quarter of a cup. When the bread machine starts to mix the dough, I baby sit and am ready to add additional water.
Not enough liquid killed my previous bread machine when I tried to make a heavy, coarse rye loaf. It is much better to have too much liquid to start with and then add flour vs not enough and watch the machine bog down and jam. Be careful with your bread machine if you are making a whole grain whole wheat bread! If the stuff in your bread machine pan starts to look like clay that belongs on a potters wheel, throw it out! You have less than 50 cents invested in the flours! The motors in these machines are not even close to being as hefty as a Kitchenaid stand mixer. If the recipe calls for 4 cups of flour, hold back a cup and see how it mixes up and gradually add the rest until it looks like a good ratio of flour to water has been achieved. You are the boss, the recipe is to help you, not enslave you.
So, overall, ther are many good, healthy recipes utilizing whole grains that can be mixed as you like.

I enjoy this book and bake bread with this book. For those of you that don't have an understanding of what term whole grain means, look it up in the dictionary. It has the "whole grain" including your flour. If you are looking for no flour in your bread, or no gluten, you better not try making a loaf of bread. You must be wanting to make crackers or hard tack. Or maybe you need "Gluten-Free" There are other cookbooks out there. But if you really want to cook and bake easy, wonderful dishes your family will always enjoy, all of Beatrice Ojakangas's books are the one's you want. If you want to make crackers try Linda Foust's book on "Fun, Easy Recipes For Baking Delicious CRACKERS! Like Cookies, They're Better Homemade. ISBN: 0-936067-16-0 . (In her book are many types.)

As the owner of 4 small dog rescues, I have found all of Darlene Arden's books extremely helpful and "small dogs, big hearts" is certainly no exception. It is filled with valuable information and should be a must read for anyone who has or is even remotely thinking about getting a small dog. Like all her books, this one is well written in Ms. Arden's easy to follow and understand style. I especially like the fact that this book contains mixed breeds and all the pictures are a wonderful addition.
I applaud Darlene Arden for emphasizing that these small breeds are not toys to be played with, but real dogs with real dog issues and needs.
Very Good Resource, Extensive Health Info.......2007-01-02
I was very anxious to get this book. In fact by the time I realized there was a second edition of the Irrepressible Toy Dog, I had been waiting several months. This lead me to several other small dog/ breed specific books. This book is definitely top notch However, I was a little biased having read similar information in several other books before reading this book. This made me less excited about its content, however I have to say that it is extremely well compiled, lots of good information and has the best health section on small breed specific disease that I have seen to date. The picture sections are cute, however it could have included more breeds instead of the same breeds over and over. It however was not as much fun as other books, and lacks in the training section when compared to other books. It is a great overall guide on toy dogs and every toy dog owner should keep a copy for a reference guide.

The diva of diminutive dogs does it again. This new edition is even better than the first, with more information on socialization and training, and wonderful color photos. Kudos for including small mixes among the purebreds, and for telling everyone that small dogs are real dogs, too. Anyone considering adding a small dog to their household should read this book.

This updated version of Ms. Arden's book is a must read for all people who are owned by a small dog. This edition includes several pages of delightful color photos and a a great list of resources for pampering your little dog!
Great book for first-time toy dog owners.......2006-08-23
I hate to be the voice of negativity among all the GREAT raves that this book got. I actually bought this book based on the reviews by other customers. It is a good book and specifies unique needs of small (especially toy) dogs. HOWEVER, as is often the case with an all encompassing book, this book would be great for first-time owners of toy dogs. I enjoyed the original edition which convinced me to get a toy dog (Papillons). If you are an experienced toy dog owner, you would only get a few things out of this book. This is the problem I find with these kind of books. It gets repetitive for the avid dog-book reader. The book doesn't address the intelligence of dogs and just glosses over each breed's characteristics. The photos in the books were great though.
