Book Description
In the first of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, 007 declares war on Le Chiffre, French communist and paymaster of the Soviet murder organization SMERSH. The battle begins in a fifty-million-franc game of baccarat, gains momentum during Bond's fiery love affair with a sensuous lady spy, and reaches a chilling climax with fiendish torture at the hands of a master sadist. For incredible suspense, unexpected thrills, and extraordinary danger, nothing can beat James Bond in his inaugural adventure.

YOU CAN BET YOUR LIFE ON IT.......2006-12-24
In his first published adventure, Ian Fleming's James Bond is despatched to the dangerous arcade of Casino Royale, where nothing is ever as it seems, to gamble a decadent Soviet operative known as "Le Chiffre" into oblivion in a winner-take-all game of Baccarat. But the unexpected lurks behind every corner, and Bond must put his trust in the beautiful but enigmatic Vesper Lynd. In the end, only one man can hold the winning card...
CASINO ROYALE is chronologically the first of Ian Fleming's legendary Bond novels, and indeed it is one of the finest. Atmosphere and characterization are at the heart of Fleming's Bond stories, and CASINO ROYALE is exceptional even by Fleming's usually high standards. Bright lights and the air of expensive cigarettes radiate from each page, and the whole is a taut, rarely-equalled example of the Cold War thriller. 007 himself is introduced as the ruthless, rather sinister assassin who set the archetype for all secret agents to come, despite the best efforts of some of the movies to turn him into a playboy with a gun fetish. The unreadable Vesper Lynd adds sugar & spice to the plot, and in my opinion makes for one of the two most alluring of all the Bond Girls (rivalled only by Tracy from ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE), and the intense hot or cold affair between she and Bond is a real stinger. Despite the relatively spartan action scenes, notwithstanding one of the most horrific torture scenes in popular literature and a purely theoretical weakness which the excellent 2006 movie more than makes up for, CASINO ROYALE never wants for suspense, and once it's begun the novel is almost impossible to put down. A classic not only of the spy genre but as a drama, CASINO ROYALE is most heartily recommended.
A Pleasant Taste of Pre-Digital Espionage Fiction.......2006-12-21
I was intrigued to read the book after seeing the movie, which i really enjoyed, and wWas excited to see that some of the film's strains (there were things that seemed incongrous) were efforts to stay loyal to this book. In surprising measure, the film does.
"Casino Royale" gives the impression of a much more human Bond than the film character, and the new film captured that as well. Fleming's 007 is not the unflappable quip-ready playboy made popular in cinema, instead favoring the grittier portrayal carried off in the new film.
It's not all grit, there is an element of sentimentality that seeps through in the novel, and many of Bond's interior monologues in the novel are reminiscient of Bronte.
All in all, I found the novel a quick reading and enjoyable spy story. As someone in my 20s, it was interesting to get a taste of espionage fiction from before the digital age, and Fleming's narrative is happily not overburdened by the gadgetry of even the early Bond films.
THE FIRST IN THE JAMES BOND SERIES.......2006-12-10
Now that Casino Royale has been released as a movie I decided to reread the book to see if it held my interest as several readings before, and yes it did.
When Ian Fleming set pen to paper to write about things he knew well, having been involved during WWII with such matters, he tailored the figure of Bond on things he not only knew well but fashioned Bond after many things he, Fleming, spent his entire life pursuing. While Bond is not an exact clone of Fleming he is most certainly somewhat Ian Fleming's near shadow.
This first book not only establishes a style and pattern of writing for the other 13 books in the Bond series, but sets a new enemy before us: SMERSH, short for SMYERT SHPIONAM which translates "Death to Spies". And in the case of James Bond in this first book he gets the ideogram for SMERSH cut by a knife into the palm of his hand. As Bond would later say in another book, "he got the point".
The location of the story is Royale-les-Eaux and casino, situated as a resort in N.E. France. Since the book was first published in 1953 that may be an approximate time for the action, and it most certainly has to be a few years after WWII from references made by Bond. Quite a bit of the story is set at the card tables within the casino involving the card game baccarat. Other than 'M' there are only 5 main characters: James Bond, Vesper Lynd, Rene Mathis, Felix Leiter, and one of Fleming's most interesting creations: Le Chiffre or the cypher. And had it not been for the intervention of SMERSH, Le Chiffre had the best of Bond and would have killed Bond in this first novel; Le Chiffre certainly came close enough. Sub characters concern a group of Bulgars or Bulgarians who are hired hit men trying to use several camera bombs to blow James into tiny, little pieces. The reader's interest is held to all of this as the story unfolds, what could have happened 50 years back is quite plausible yet today, too.
As Raymond Benson states in synopsis of this first James Bond novel: "Most atmospheric of all novels; most serious and violent of all novels; Bond at his coldest and most ruthless.". I would also add as the reader arrives at the end of the book, a most philosophic James Bond, and through his philosophy as he speaks to Rene Mathis, James gives us his reasons to continue on with the "00" number. He explains that his number is 007 and the "OO" number is only given to agents after they have killed two people in cold blood prior to becoming an agent. When he begins his lengthly philosophy Bond seems bent on resigning from the secret service, but by dialogue's end, he has convinced himself he must, however, take on this new evil: SMERSH.
And as all of us having both the books and DVDs know quite well, it has been and continues to be, one glorious and bumpy adventure, one after the other.
If you are a newcomer to James Bond and decide to read the books, and that is really the only way to come know Bond, it is advisable to read them in the order written. Though they stand independently, one from another, and can be read as such, reading in sequence will allow your knowledge of things "Bondian" a gradual growth. As in this first novel we find that Mr. Bond wears suits that cost $6000.00. Now in the 1950s that could amount to 2 year's salary for most factory workers! Just one of many other inside items never finding its way to the silver screen.
Good reading, shaken but never stirred.
Semper Fi.
Richly Textured Novel and Period Piece.......2006-11-20
This is not only Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel but one of his best. It is richly textured, well written, clearly defines the Bond character and has survived not only as good literature but as a great period piece of the 50s. It also gives us a glimpse of the often unseen smoke filled cocktailed night life found in Europe's plush casinos of that era. Clearly, James Bond is a worldly character that lives and breaths in this unseen world described by Ian Fleming in this novel. James Bond can easily adapt to any locale or situation, size it up and endure. He is both innovative and resourceful and he must rely on his talents and instincts to survive. This is a very good Bond novel. The interestingly designed retro cover too adds to the ambiance.

Smashing Darling.......2005-03-24
A far cry from the lunatic John Huston film by the same name, Casino Royale is a terrific start for Mr. Bond, originally more of an antihero than his celluloid counterpart. Casino Royale delivers with the hard-hitting slam of a blackjack and doesn't stop until the very last page!
Not a good start for Mr. Bond........2004-04-25
Being someone who has seen a lot of James Bond movies, I picked up this book to see where it all started. And I have to say, I was dissapointed. The climax of the book took place right in the middle, and there was endless detail after detail after detail. And I know it was written back in 1953 and it was a different world back then, but I was shocked as to how politically incorrect it was. Spy fiction was not my thing in the first place, but I can honestly say that I'll be sticking to the movies for the forseeable future.

Finally, a Book For Trail Riders.......2003-07-15
I'm a long distance trail rider, and was just about to give up on finding fiction that isn't race- and mountain-bike based, when I found Mr. Sirota. Finally, a story to think about on the trail! And such a wonderful one, too. I'm telling you, after mile 70, finding a nice R&R gate is looking mighty good, and after the bike seat's been up your rear for 100, rubbing the Bukko might be a good idea...
Whether you bike or not, this book (and its sequels) make for a great quickly-paced read, and it never gets boring. Mr. Sirota, how about a fourth?
Mike Sirota Rocks!.......2001-05-04
Any one who likes cycling, scifi, fantasy, or just twisted pun related humor will love these books. Mr. Sirota demonstrates knowledge in a great variety of fields as well as an imaginative approach to some old plot ideas. The only problem is that I occasionally have to repair my shifter from trying to get it to go into "22nd" gear.
Bike Rider's Guide to the Galaxy.......2000-12-24
I've just finished re-reading Mike Sirota's _Bicycling through Space and Time_ for the fourth or fifth time. It's been nine years since I bought it, but it's *still* funny as hell. Fans of Douglas Adams, Parke Godwin and any other good space opera (yes-- I said "good space opera"-- there is such a thing) will *love* seeing Sirota's hero, a San Diegan everyman named Jack Miller, riding through a lot of outrageously funny adventures. I read this whole book in two days and laughed all the way through it. A wonderful gift for anyone who likes his or her fantasy light, with touches of the modern world thrown in. Sirota should *definitely* continue this series for at least one more book.
A Unique Sci-Fi Adventure.......2000-08-13
If you like to read, if you like sci-fi, if you enjoy riding a bicycle, and if you're familiar with and love the San Diego area, you'll really appreciate this book and its two sequels. The humorous, tongue-in-cheek writing style reminds one of the Stainless Steel Rat novels. All in all, a very enjoyable, entertaining, and satisfying reading experience.

Customer Reviews:
The best sandwich book I've purchased!.......2007-08-05
From the book, "Great sandwiches start with great ingredients, homemade mayonnaise..." The condiment recipes are my favorites (Oven-Roasted Tomatoes (I can eat these everyday), Hot Mustard (awesome), Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise, Lemon Mayonnaise, Balsamic Roasted Garlic--just to name a few). They add so much to the sandwiches.
In addition to the great recipes there is a chapter called "The Basics" in which they explain all the different breads, cheeses, meats, oils and vinegars they use in their recipes. It is quite informative.
I think this would make a great gift for anyone interested in cooking or eating :o)
Great Taste !.......2007-06-29
I just got a Panini maker and was looking for more recipes than what came with the unit. I purchased this one - have made 6 varieties of panini and overall, they were all great ! The book also introduced me to various cheeses as well as to some fantastic accompaniments such as Sun-dried tomato pesto; pickled onions; Peperonata to name a few. In addition to Pananis', there are also recipes for antipasti, salads, tramezzini and bruchetta. This is a book well worth having.
Recipe didn't work.......2007-06-12
The first item I made from this book, Oven-Roasted Tomotoes, didn't work at all. I would be glad to change my rating of this book if someone knows what went wrong. It said to roast at 275 degrees for 20 minutes, baste again with Balsamic (for a total of 1/2-cup), then cook another 20 minutes. Nothing happened after the first 20 minutes because the temp was too low. My oven was pre-heated. I checked for a recipe on Epicurious, and it had baking at 350 for 1 hour... not sure what happened, but it doesn't instill confidence in the book.
Living la dolce vita.......2007-05-29
I would not have thought I would be persuaded to purchase a "cook book" with the abundance of recipes available to me for free on the internet, but I'm glad other reviewers convinced me. I read it cover to cover as soon as it arrived-and my mouth watered the entire time! It really is lovely and full of easy, delicious recipes that exploit the fact that simple ingredients really are the basis of good cooking. I don't think any foodie would be disappointed to add this book to his/her collection.
Make Your Own Panini - Just Like you Found in Italy..........2007-04-16
Oh, if you could smell the heavenly scents emanating from my kitchen right now, you would know why I'm so enamored of this latest addition to my cookbook collection !
I first fell in love with panini during an escorted tour to Italy two years ago that involved several hours in the bus on alternate days. The highlight of the bus trip was the mid-day stop at the ubiquitous roadside restaurant chain known as AutoGrill - far more varied and satisfying than the typical fast food chain restaurant choices that you find on the interstate in the U.S. Every AutoGrill featured fresh-made panini, assembled with just a few fresh and simple ingredients, quickly melded together by a press in the hot grill. I tried unsuccessfully to find comparable sandwiches back in California. Many delis offered sandwiches billed as "panini" but they lacked the authentic flavors and construction of their Italian namesakes.
I received a panini grill as a Christmas gift so that I could try my hand at making panini at home, but was disappointed with the meager cook book that accompanied the grill. I researched specialty cookbooks dedicated to the subject of panini and discovered that "Simple Italian Sandwiches" fit the bill exactly. I was delighted to read in the foreword by Mario Batali that his favorite place to eat in Italy is also the AutoGrill which he called "temples of gastronomic magnificence".
The authors, Jennifer and Jason Denton, also fell in love with the little toasted sandwiches during a trip to Italy and established a tiny Greenwich Village restaurant called `ino that featured the foods they had come to love in Italy. Their recipes offer "maximum flavor and minimal cooking" allowing the cooks to spend more time with their guests.
Before I delved into the panini recipes in "Simple Italian Sandwiches" I purchased warm, soft ciabatta rolls, fresh mozzarella, a wonderfully aromatic wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano, Asiago, Prosciutto di Parma, campari tomatoes on the vine and extra virgin olive oil. You're probably thinking by now that I spent a fortune and traveled far and wide to collect these essential panini ingredients. To the contrary, it required just one trip to the local Costco and cost far less than if I had gone to the expensive Italian deli nearby. As suggested by the authors, I shopped for top quality ingredients and prepared the condimenti myself from scratch. These included fresh basil pesto, balsamic roasted garlic, oven roasted tomatoes and peperonata - diced bell peppers slowly roasted with balsamic vinegar and herbs in olive oil.
The cookbook includes 6 sections:
Basics - the list of suggested top-quality ingredients - breads, meats, cheeses.
Condimenti - including pesto, mayonnaise, roasted garlic, oven-roasted tomatoes, etc.
Panini - 19 recipes
Bruschetta - 15 recipes
Tramezzini - 9 recipes
Antipasti, Merende and Insalate - interesting accompaniments to the sandwiches
I had been expecting a cookbook entirely consisting of panini recipes, but the bruschetta and tramezzini recipes are an enjoyable bonus. I hadn't thought of bruschetta as a type of sandwich, but it's essentially an open face sandwich with delicious fresh ingredients piled on a small slice of crusty, toasted bread. Tramezzini, which means "little something in the middle", are crustless, petite sandwiches made on moist, fresh white bread. The fillings are simple and flavorful, just as with the panini, but the sandwiches are not toasted.
The recipes are very simply presented, one per page, with a nice, crisp typeface and plenty of whitespace to allow you to make your "cook's notes". A column of ingredients and quantities is printed on the left side of the page (reinforcing how few ingredients there are in most of the recipes), with the instructions in step by step form on the right side. Full color photos (46 in total) accompany many of the recipes, helping you to select the recipe that appeals to your appetite and available ingredients and offering attractive serving suggestions.
Panini (and the other Italian sandwiches featured in the book) are an excellent addition to the repertoire of a busy cook, perfect for families on the run and working cooks with little time and energy for cooking after a long day at work. And "Simple Italian Sandwiches" provides a sufficient variety of enticing and practical recipes to ensure that your panini grill earns a permanent spot among the most useful appliances in your kitchen.

The Guide to Owning A Pomeranian.......2001-10-12
Excellant book for the first time or well seasoned pomeranian
owner. Lots of tips and information in layman terms. Being
a pomeranian breeder I intend to recommend this book to everyone
as a must have.
Highlights Many Different Topics & Concerns Regarding Poms.......2000-08-21
Many pet books that are currently on the market are full of fluff and sound like they could be about any breed of dog. However, Ms. Ellmann has written a wonderful guide to Pomeranians. She highlights on the history of Poms, the proper way to choose a pup, housebreaking, training, grooming, and general health care of Poms. She also gives great information about how to show your dog if you desire to do so. It's not a guide that goes very in-depth, but in my case, it's a great book to get started learning about Pomeranians. One of my favorite features of this particular book are the stunning pictures that are throughout it. I definitely recommend this Guide To Owning a Pomeranian!

Beautiful Button Jewelry.......2007-09-03
I have gathered, sorted and purchased some old button assortments because I was inspired by the beautiful pictures. I have a craft date with my sis next week to make some jewelry. We're really excited to try our hands at this project.
Craft.......2007-03-09
This book will show you how to use up all the buttons you have laying around. I just wish it had better patterns.
Great Illustrations!.......2007-03-09
This book is beautiful with great pictures! Being a experienced beader, I could figure out how to make the jewelry illustrated in the book. This book has alot of history of the button also. Love,Love this Book!
Divine and delightful!.......2007-02-07
Let me start by saying I paid FULL PRICE for this book, that is how much I was enchanted by it. I simply had to have it and have it now, and I am still quite happy that I did so. Does anyone ever pay full price anymore??
You should know that the writer has an associated web site that features terrific buttons and findings, but this book is not a hard sell for that business.
If you collect vintage sewing items you will love just looking at this book. I collect old buttons, and I am pleased at how the book is arranged. Each chapter (after the introduction and "Getting Started") is divided by button type: Victorian Metal, Jet Glass, MOP (mother of pearl), Porcelain & China, Modern Glass, and Bakelite & Celluloid. Some readers might find this strange, but as I mentioned, if you are a collector of vintage items, this is a very sensible approach. And a visual feast, even if you don't make any of the items!!
I need to stress that the instructions section of each project is actually shorter than the materials list, and some readers might not find this adequate. Also, the techniques section of the "Getting Started" chapter is only 2 pages, and prior wire/bead work will be most helpful for the beginner. Despite all this, this book opened up a new world to me, and was the springboard for many MANY subsequent book purchases.
I don't think you will be disappointed especially if you are a vintage buttons/findings collector. And if you're not before buy this book, you sure will be afterwards!! This is a beautiful and inspiring addition to any crafter's book shelf.
Great Ideas for Jewelry Making........2007-01-10
I enjoyed this book very much and picked up a lot of very good ideas for my hobby of making jewelry.

Book Description
Following World War II, there has been a subtle but constant drip-feed of Nazi-related material coming onto the market. Ranging from the first published concentration camp memoirs to appear in the aftermath of war, and banned 1990s computer games in which players become the Kommandants of their own death-camps, to sexploitation films of the '60s and '70s, records and comics. Kamp Kulture brings a wide range of material together for the first time to formulate a study of this unique and repulsive phenomenon: Nazi and Holocaust exploitation.
Simon Whitechapel was born in Madagascar, where he had an agnostic upbringing. Previous publications include Crossing to Kill (Virgin, 2000), and Flesh Inferno (Creation, April 2003).

Daughter of Jerusalem.......2003-09-25
Wonderful story giving you the contrast of what dreams of living like a princess such as Princess Nora and what can happen when another one finds herself trapped, abused and denied justice. Her faith heals her each time she is let down and finally wonderful solace and peace at last.
This is the best non-fiction book I have ever read!.......2003-07-20
I was engrossed with the story and admired the author's quest for spiritual growth and the courage she had to face all of the challenges brought before her. It is clear that the author experienced a great deal of anguish being separated from her children. She never wanted for anything material but continued to grow spiritually and the love she had for her sons never dimmed; it was channeled into helping others.
The author described the very complicated political/religous climate of the middle east in concise lucid terms.
I highly recommend this book.
A Free Spirit.......2003-07-19
From reading this book I learned that Sharon is an awsome woman. This book is not just about motherhood and Iran. There is so much more to it. It's a story of relentless courage and real life obstacles.
This is a story about a young girl who follows her heart.
As with all young women, she doesn't always make the best decisions. She learns from her mistakes and persistently
persues her quest.
Dedicated in her search for God, she has many adventures. Some of them good, some of them not. Sharon is able to retain her personal values despite persecutions. She doesn't let the trials and tribulations keep her down.
Throughout Sharons life, she is able to remain true to herself and others. A real keeper of her own convictions. I was inspired by her travels and fearless way of really "living" her life.
An autobiography of a truly strong woman, her experiences and lessons learned. A book that reads well and isn't overly wordy. Ms. Geyer can concisly describe her surroundings in such a way that you could picture it in your mind. A true talent. I couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading more from Sharon Geyer.
A More Balanced View.......2003-06-12
Sharon Geyer was able to write an honest book about being seperated from her children in Iran without drowning the reader in the intense personal struggles she suffered as a mother. Doing this, allows the reader to join Sharon on her journey without adding further guilt and pain to her children who still love both of their parents. This feels like a selfless act of mothering and gives the reader a more balanced view into Sharon Geyer's life.
A story of faith.......2003-06-11
Sharon Geyer's story is as much about her journey of faith as it is about a young woman who heads off to Iran with her new husband and son, her life in Iran, her eventual escape and the pain of leaving her sons behind and her discovery of and love for Jerusalem. I couldn't put it down.
