Book Description
A big, powerful, gray feline, Joe Grey is perfectly content with his remarkable ability to understand and communicate with humans -- especially now that he has company. A mysterious accident similar to the one that enabled him to speak and read has transformed his friend Dulcie as well. The trouble is, the cute tabby female not only hears human words, she believes them.
Now she's convinced the man who was jailed for murdering a famous local artist and burning down her studio is innocent -- simply because he says so -- and she's willing to do whatever it takes to dig up the evidence that will exonerate the accused. Joe would much prefer just lazing around the house doing kitty things, but the lady cat is determined. And Joe must admit that he is curious ... though everyone knows what that can lead to!
Customer Reviews:
Another murder solved by Joe and Dulcie.......2001-07-24
When a prominent artist is burned to death in her own studio, the two cat detectives can't believe it to be an accident. They set out to find out exactly what happened and like always they are into everything and keeping their house mates worried about them and Captain Harper off balance because he thinks the cats are involved in his anonymous tips. He doesn't want to admit, even to himself, that he believes simple little cats could do these unusual things. Joe and Dulcie are always kitty on the spot when something happens and to find clues to crimes. This is a good, interesting book. The author deserves credit for coming up with such an unusual series of stories.
For a good time, read this book.......1998-12-04
I throughly enjoyed reading this as will many other lovers of the felines and crime solving genre. The characters are real and very lovable, and in all her books the author also creates intriguing little 'sub plots' which will pull you in if the main one does not. Humor mixed with tenderness--if you can handle that combination, this book is for you.
Midnight Louie my 1st love, now Joe Grey a worthy 2nd.......1997-03-23
The concept of cats who can think and talk like people is a bit frightening. I'm not sure I want to think about what my five would have to say if they could! Apparently this ability comes from some sort of Celtic/Egyptian/Italian folklore/mythological roots. Sometimes however, Joe or Dulcie will say or think something that seems just a bit beyond belief for a cat even with this super ability. And more than once they demonstrated physical abilities that seemed unlikely even allowing for their being able to conceive of doing them. But this may be nit picking. After you get used to the idea, this is a good mystery. I have to admit I fell for a couple of red herrings.
Dulcie is certain that the young man in jail for murder is innocent and she gets Joe Grey involved in a big way. Along the way they encounter all sorts of strange characters and a very nasty dog. Their escapades make for an enjoyable reading experience (just be sure to check your ideas about what cats can and can't do at the door).
All things considered, if I had to choose, I think I would stay with Midnight Louie, Carol Nelson Douglas' street wise cat in Las Vegas. I prefer my cats a little more cat like and a little less people like. Fortunately I don't have to choose, I can have BOTH! Enjoy Murphy's Joe Grey and Dulcie then go check out Midnight Louie as well, you won't be disappointed.

Ruth Berry wants to be the first reporter in years to interview reclusive Jeremy Jones, the son of famed author E.A. Jones and the hero of her classic children's fantasy books. Jeremy does not want to discuss his childhood; he has forgotten it, he has changed his name to Jerry, and he has not spoken to his mother in many years. But he finds his memories returning when strange events seem to indicate that the Adventures of Jeremy in Neverwas weren't fantasy. He, Ruth, and Ruth's daughter Gilly sink ever deeper into a terrifying underworld, pursued by the villainous Barnaby Sattermole, by Sattermole's monomaniacal archenemy Sneath, and by the relentless Shadow Committee, a secret conspiracy at least as old as human history.
In Dark Cities Underground, American Book Award winner Lisa Goldstein reveals and explores the connections among the worlds of Narnia and Never-Never Land, the Wind in the Willows and Wonderland, myth and legend. But don't read Dark Cities Underground as an escapist secondary-world adventure; that will lead to disappointment, because this novel is about the nature and meaning of otherworlds, and not about disappearing into them. This fine modern fantasy is also about archetypes, childhood, growing up, loyalty, immortality, death, and love. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
The story of Ruthie, a young journalist sent to interview Jerry, an older man who as a child was the central character of a series of classic childrens books written by his mother, the Adventures of Jeremy in Neverwas. But Jerrys scary fantastic world is real and sucks them in to strange adventures underground, where love and death threaten.
Customer Reviews:
Clever Plot; Competent Writing.......2004-12-30
This is a solid but unexceptionable fantasy novel. Like the work of Tim Powers and others, it assumes a mythic substructure to our mundane world. In this case, the emphasis is on the Egyptian Osiris myth, though other mythic archetypes are involved in the story. The plot, involving the mythical elements, subway construction, and different aspects of children's literature, is ingenious. Other aspects of the book, such as character development and prose in general, do not match the promise of the plot. Worth reading but disappointing in the sense that the potential of the story is never really fulfilled.
Tim Powers light.......2001-09-20
This book shows that Lisa Goldstein clearly is channeling the same spirit as Tim Powers and Neil Gaiman: there's a shadow world just beneath our own, and anyone who can see it risks being labelled crazy...or much worse yet, being noticed by the denizens of the second world.
I say "Tim Powers light", but that's not dismissive - there are times when one doesn't want a 12 course meal. This novel is just an app, a salad, and an entree, but that's not to speak poorly of it. There are paths not taken, and ideas not explored, but one nice effect of that is that one leaves the table feeling full, but not bloated.
Take a subway ride through childhood mythic adventure..........2001-08-07
Could there possibly be a connection between Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, The Hobbit and Wind in the Willows? Could they all be stories that were told, not by the authors to their children, but rather by the children to their parents? Could they all be about the same place, a fantastic world that only children could enter and return to tell stories about?
When a struggling journalist is hired to do a biography of A. E. Jones, the author of the classic children's series "Jeremy in Neverwas", her suspicions are aroused. Especially when she meets the author's son, now a disturbed, middle-aged man, who has become estranged from his mother for stealing his childhood. As she continues her research into truth behind Neverwas she never expects that her own daughter will also be drawn into this fantastic world. A world far more dangerous than any children's book.
This is terrific book. The author ties in history, myth and literature to create a timeless story. A fast paced and exciting roller-coaster ride. No, make that a fast paced and exciting subway ride! You'll get my meaning when you read the book.
Urban fantasy by a master storyteller........2001-03-06
Lisa Goldstein is one of the finest storytellers of our generation, and "Dark Cities Underground" shows this in vivid detail. Who else do you know who can weave together the themes from favorite childrens books sucha as "Alice in Wonderland," "Peter Pan," "The Wind in the Willows," and even "The Hobbit" to create an excursion through the archetypes that form the Dark Cities Underground? Add in enough Egyptian mystery via the tales surrounding Isis, Osiris and Set -- and you have yourself a potent little tale that is hard to forget.
If you like the works of James Blaylock or early Tim Powers, then this is one you should give a try. The characters are well developed, the themes are fascinating, and the book is thoroughly entertaining. Highly Recommended.
Definitely recommended.......2001-02-15
I just finished reading this yesterday. Lisa Goldstein has created an intersting world connecting up the various subways in cities around the world. She also brings in Egyptian mythology, children's literature, and literary archetypes as parts of her Nefer Lands(Netherworld). The only weak aspect was her trying to tie in what seemed like all great children's literature. I could see a connection to some, but not all of the books mentioned.
In all though, it's a pretty good story. The characters are interesting and fleshed out enough to make them sympathetic protagonists or effective antagonists.
Two years ago I bought and read Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. There are obvious parallels between that book and Dark Cities Underground. I enjoyed both and would recommend both, but I feel that Neverwhere is the superior book.
DCU is a bit thin. Much is written of the build up to the main characters realizing that something else is down there underground, but there just isn't the development of the underground world the way there is in Neverwhere. I also liked the characters in Neverwhere a bit better.
Read both books and see what you think.

Warrows=Hobbits.......2006-09-04
Okay, so it's a knock off of Lord of the Rings. It is still a good book. The Warrow's, those Hobbit-esque little guys living behind their wall of thorns are archers of great ability. 'The arrow as strayed may have just as well been tossed away'. One old gaffers saying.
The wolves come and when the river freezes over they are able to penetrate the Thornwall. A call has been sent forth to all lands for aid against the growing demondark. A band of Warror archers goes into the land of men to give what aid they can.
I liked it from beginning to end. If you can get past the Lord of the Rings similarities and enjoy it on its own merit, you will find a great adventure.
It is an essay, written by a 5th grader on Tolkien's book.......2006-05-21
Don't worry, the book is written so poorly, that you would not even bother to file a copyright infringement case.
Misunderstood.......2005-10-13
Some people slam this as a Tolkein rip off. It certainly apes much of Tolkein, but that is because it was supposed to. McKiernan wrote The Silver Call Duology for the Middle Earth universe. When he could not get the rights, he made some changes, and then wrote this trilogy as a back story. So yes, it is very middle earth, but it is also an entertaining story. If you read McKiernan's later work, you will see that he has grown very much into his own style.
Buy it. Read it. Be happy.......2005-07-26
I've been reading Fantasy for years. From Jordan through Erikson, Marco and a ton others. McKeirnan continues to be one of the BEST story tellers. His skills are amazing and in the Iron Tower Trilogy anybody can see what keeps McKeirnan in the top.
!
The Iron Tower trilogy starts .......2005-05-10
McKiernan doesn't pull any punches with this novel. He admits at the very start that it was written as a homage to J.R.R. Tolkien and he has closely emulated Tolkien's style. It is also clear that this book is the first in a series, so the reader should not be disappointed that The Dark Tide doesn't wrap everything up into a neat little ball at the conclusion of this volume.
Entertaining it was, and short in length. With such rhythmic, almost melodic, phrasing, McKiernan begins to pull the reader into a world highly reminiscent of Tolkien's Middle Earth. The main character of this tale, a Warrow named Tuckerby Underbank, seems quite a bit like a hobbit. The reader will also meet Elves and Men, along with a vast array of evil beings, minions of the dreaded Modru. Long banished from the lands of Mithgar, Modru has broken free and begun to move south to cast his dark shadow across the world. Responding to the High King's call, Tuck and a company of Warrows travel north to fight beside the king. In this novel, McKiernan concentrates most of the action on the Warrows' defense of the High King's citadel, Challerain Keep, but he hints at other side plots which will be addressed in the subsequent volumes of this trilogy.
McKiernan is not Tolkien, but I think he did a very good job of creating a world similar to Middle Earth. It is a world rich in history and peopled by intriguing and wondrous creatures. The characters in The Dark Tide are well drawn but not overly complex; the heroes are good, the villains are unredeemingly evil. The plot moves along quickly without a lot of distractions or annoying side trips. While the basic premise of this novel is extremely familiar to fantasy fans, McKiernan has added his own touches and managed to keep it interesting.

best of beers.......2007-09-22
Sould you have acquired a basic knowledge of home brewing techniques, this book provides a variety of recipies that should tickle your lager loving pallette.
GREAT Reference!!.......2007-03-08
This is the 3rd reference by Charles Papazian that you should purchase. It is chock full of tips from experienced brewers along with the recipies. Being a new brewer, I only wish there were more pictures of some of the equipment. There are websites listed informing one of where to find ingredients and equipment.
Excellent addition to a homebrewer's library........2007-03-03
Ok, so some recipes are in need of adjustment, but the book is loaded with recipes and interesting brewer tips. It is simple, but it is not a step-by-step how-to. I suggest that this is good for the homebrewer that is ready to experiment and try new things and of course, the more experienced can tweak the recipe when and if needed. The beginning section touches on the framework for all the recipes provided, explaining the amount of water used, yeast type, batch quantity and more. Other than that, it's recipe after recipe and the occasional brewer's tip and back story on beer styles.
This is a fun book with a variety of recipes that will be enjoyed by any homebrewer. Those new to homebrewing will enjoy reading and making, but will be ready after some experience or the help of their local brew supply shop. I made a few and they came out quite well.
This is a good book to give as a gift or add to your library.
Worst recipe book that I own........2006-05-09
If you are looking to start brewing with extract then this might work for you but don't count on the recipes making anything that is close to professional quality beers.
The recipes are at some points, proposterously bad and some of the clones are just innacurate.
In all I own 48 books on brewing. Many are great, some are just OK and then a few are downright bad. This is by far the worst one that I own. Common, not even giving the brewer yeast suggestions???
An invaluabe stepping stone.......2006-03-21
As a beginning homebrewer looking to extend beyond pre-hopped extracts and pre-packaged kits, this book was exactly what I was looking for. I found the asides and exerts amusing. I would higly recommend this book for anyone who's already brewed a few batches and is looking for more recipes.

Entertaining as it is informative and highly recommended.......2006-11-05
Barrel racing is one of the equestrian sports which lends to an exciting competition both for spectator and competitor, but few books cover barrel racing. Instructor and champion racer Marlene McRae has developed an entire program for the barrel racer and shares her arena tips for this audience; from selecting a champion barrel-racing horse to using equipment, beginning barrel racing patterns, and competing. A 'must' for all equestrian sports enthusiasts, Barrel Racing 101is as entertaining as it is informative and highly recommended for school and community library Sports & Athletics collections.

Book Description
The first publication to focus on individual designers in ceramics over the whole 20th century. Covers all the major female designers with up to date findings. Also some male designers previously almost undocumented.
Book Description
The definative guide to the work of this highly respected, contemporary ceramic designer. The major achievements from her prolific career are discussed. Includes sixteen comprehensive authoritative.
Book Description
After raising their own children, businesswoman Elaine Scott and designer Ros Badger realized there was a demand for well-made, stylish hand knitwear. The two soon joined forces to create Little Badger. This book features some of their favorite and most successful knitwear designs for infants and toddlers to 6-year-olds. Also included are new patterns for sweaters, hats, blankets, mittens, and leggings; 25 designs in all. 90 charming color photographs and drawings illustrate the text. "When I was pregnant with my first daughter Martha, I was looking through some old knitting patterns . . . I found some lovely old- fashioned pram coats which provided the inspiration for this Denim coat dress. I used the denim cotton yarn with coconut shell buttons, and updated the traditional pram coat design by using moss stitch edging instead of lace, to create a coat dress that looks just as good with pretty dresses or dungarees as it does with a Christening robe." - from the book
Customer Reviews:
Several sweet projects.......2007-04-18
The book mainly takes a basic sweater shape and provides different intarsia patterns for that one design. Not bad, albeit a bit blah. There were also some sizing problems in the instructions of one sweater and finding mistakes/typos is always frustrating.
Not a Good Book.......2006-01-06
The book has great photographs and interesting looking pieces upon trying to follow one of the patterns I'm ready to throw out the project. It's as though a picture was taken of an item and someone made up a pattern they thought would work. One of the most confusing instructions reads "every following alternate row" and still I wonder what that means. If I were to decrease every alternate row the item would be lopsided...and there is more. If there were pictures of the individual pieces I could figure it out, but, alas, there are none.
Just so you know my skill is a strong intermediate, I've been knitting for over 5 years.
I tried to contact the publisher to see if there were any corrections made to the publication, no answer.
Ugh.......2005-11-19
I bought this at a time when I was looking for patterns and ideas for babies thatwere coming into my life. I am glad I bought it at a discount because I feel there is way too much wrong and patterns that aren't worth doing.
Serious errors.......2003-03-10
I thought the garments presented in this book were attractive and they looked fairly simple to make. However, once I got started with my first project (the Ballet Cardigan, page 64), I realized that the instructions for the Front Back and Front Left section were incorrect. And not just a LITTLE bit incorrect...they were full-blown, gonzo wrong. I asked an experienced knitter to check the pattern for me, just in case I was mistaken about how the sweater was constructed, and she confirmed that the pattern was bizarre and unworkable. I'm still fiddling with the pattern, trying to juggle it into something that IS workable...I hadn't expected to have to expend so much skull sweat for something that should be so simple to knit.
On another note, I am disappointed that the authors didn't include diagrams of how to assemble the finished garments. It would be easier to re-write and re-design their creations if I had better pictures of how they think the things should fit together.
I believe I'll call the publisher for a full errata sheet tomorrow, and afterward I'll be wary of any other pattern published by Ros Badger or Elaine Scott.
Sloppy Editing Job!.......2003-01-21
This is a cute book on the surface, but when you try to knit one of the patterns, you realize that either the authors did not know what they were doing, or they don't care to proofread the text to ensure that their clientel can actually knit the item!! I had to call the publisher 3 times to get the actual total and complete list of errata for the one hat - Dragon Hat. So beware if you try to knit that one. It is so cute, but if I wasn't an experienced knitter, I would have been totally confused and given up. I corrected 3 rows but the errors kept on coming so I then resorted to the publisher. If I were the authors I would immediately have someone go through each and every pattern to ensure accuracy and arm the publisher with the changes ASAP.If they don't have the pride in their work, why should I ever try another pattern or buy another book by these authors?

It is difficult to explain Creative Concepts built for and on an Interactive platform in a "Book". The attached CD was helpful but you keep flipping back and forth between formats so that the flow of thought is difficult to continue. Overall the book gives Interactive advertising protogees a great glance into the vast world of possibilities the Internet opens. For Interactive novices - nice but not really groundbreaking.

Great book - Helped us in getting design concepts!.......2000-05-24
This is one book that we usually look up when creating web sites. The book is full of 'Best Web Sites', the agencies who created them etc. As my company is in the field of Web development, we usually browse this book to gather up information about different concept designs and what is really appreciated in the market today in the 'e' industry. In short, if you are looking for a book that covers the best of the web, then this is it!

Another Beautiful Book.......2003-12-18
"The Fire Ever Burning" by Aaron Henry and Constance Curry is an important contribution about the Civil Rights Movement. Henry was loved by his friends and was considered to be astute, brave and caring. As was often typical of the times, he was accused of some rotten stuff. How else do you stop people from obtaining their rights? Constance Curry, who wrote this book from Henry's papers, lived the Civil Rights Movement and was actively involved in the Mississippi Delta where Henry lived. She is a careful researcher and writes from the heart. Like "Silver Rights" by Curry, about school integration in the Delta, this book is another good read and I highly recommend it.
Aaron Henry--a morally bankrupt man.......2002-06-03
I came to know Aaron Henry when he was elected to serve in the Mississippi House in 1980. Initially I thought he was a doddering relic, yet pleasant enough, who tended to pontificate. He was in over his head and didn't really seem to have much interest in the legislative process and, as a result, was not highly regarded by his peers. He had a long history of arrests in city parks in the middle of the night, if you catch my drift. He made advances toward me and several other individuals--it was pathetic. Aaron Henry is indicative of the rotten core of the civil rights movement and liberal politicians in general--you don't have to look far for this. He ranks up there with Al Lowenstein and Bill Clinton. I believe this book is self serving and out of synch with reality.
