Book Description
In Beverly Connor's absorbing series, the bones of the dead reveal the secrets of the living. In this latest investigation, forensic anthropologist Diane Fallon must lead a chilling excavation of a crime with harrowing implications: the murder of three people, hanged execution-style in an isolated patch of Georgia woods.
Customer Reviews:
Whoa, It's Dangerous to Hang Out in this Town.......2006-10-23
Following the discovery of the first three bodies in this case, the deaths come thick and fast. It's not as tight as the first mystery in this series and the author does a real no-no in the introduction of one of her villaims but it is fair to say that she definitely gave hints that there was another one skulking around.
The introduction of Diane Fallon as also a knot expert allowed some different forensic techniques to be discussed, add to that the mummy inherited by the museum and the contents of the Victorian pickle jar that came with it, and there's lots here to keep the biggest forensic mystery junkie interested.
While you don't have to have read the first book in the series I would definitely suggest it. Connor has a habit of continuing small threads from book to book. Besides the first book is also a good read.
CSI fans will love this book.......2006-09-21
Someone should buy the rights to this book and plan to turn it into a movie. Diane Fallon, forensic anthropologist, gets out of her car at a crime scene and presents her credentials to a patrolman, who says (nodding toward the two men who reported the crime) "They say it's not normal." Diane muses "Not normal. The kind of death they called her out for usually wasn't." If you like CSI, complete with the forensic analysis, study of bugs, and yes, evidence in the form of knots, you'll be fascinated. There's even a subplot with a mummy. If you're looking for a nice, cozy, "everyone-snowed-in-at-the-manor-house" story, this is probably not for you. I've become a big fan of this series and will eagerly look forward to more works from this writer.
A bit disappointed.......2006-02-03
For such great reviews I was pretty let down. Like another reviewer, I found too much info about stuff that has nothing to do with the crime or story. And ALOT and WAY too much info about knots. If you buy it you'll know what I mean. Started out very Promising....got half way thru and it fell apart. I can assure Patricia Cornwell she has NOTHING to worry about!!
Forensics are the most believable part.......2005-10-23
The explanations which bring to light the forensic process are excellent in this book, but the mystery surrounding them relies on hyperbole of several forms. First, the lead character is a superwoman who seems determined to beat us over the head with feminist and liberal attitudes of the author in such a ham-handed way that even if you agree with her you wish she'd stop being so obviously manipulative. It's like a terrible kindergarten teacher. I don't like propaganda of any form in my literature, and while it's present in most of the genre in varying degrees, this book was truly horrible in this regard. While I like Ms. Fallon, the lead character, she is a collection of traits with no unifying concept to her; I end up feeling like I've interviewed an actor and seen only what they were trained to show me. Finally, the mystery is slightly weak. The responsible parties are not introduced through a chain of clues, but are mentioned incidentally, and hidden, then brought out suddenly. This requires that their personalities be as outrageously, one-dimensionally "bad" as Fallon's is "good." Clearly the author has talent in the forensics area, as I was fascinated by these details, but the rest of the book is frothily vapid attempts at mind control. I would not recommend this book to anyone I like.
Squandered potential.......2005-09-24
I (finally) finished this book. I struggled through to the end, each page an investment of time I didn't want to go totally to waste.
I'm disappointed. Plain and simple, it could have been better.
So what did I like and what did I not like? Let's start with the positive:
First, the murders which kick off the story are interesting, and the investigation that follows was well-described.
Second, like Dick Francis, Connor includes lots of information about subjects not directly related to the crimes being committed.
Sadly, that second item leads into the list of things I did not like:
Where Francis wove other subjects into his mysteries, Connor grafts her digressions onto the story in a ham-handed fashion. In addition, she goes on at great length, almost like a textbook, as if she wants to impress the reader with her research. Not very artful.
Second, the writing is clumsy and needs editing. Chapters end in the middle of conversations; people do NOT talk the way she writes dialog; and she repeats conversations between the main character and others at the expense of pages of worthless rambling.
Third, the murders start to pile up beyond all reason. Just not realistic, sorry.
Fourth, there is a holdover subplot from the first novel in the series, about why-people-hate-Diane, which just gets stale. Enough!
Finally, the villain is introduced right at the end, out of the blue. Not fair! Nuff said.
I gave it three stars because it kept me wanting to know what happened, but this writer needs an editor who can chop a 380+ page book into the 220 pages it deserved.

Orgies, Rape, and Murder...Kobe-Style
New best-selling exposé gives first-hand account of Kobe Bryant's very personal - and very sick - lifestyle before the infamous rape trial - as well as fascinating insight to the life of a celebrity bodyguard.
Though completely overexposed during his stratospheric rise to NBA fame and subsequent rape trial in Colorado, anyone who thought they knew the real Kobe Bryant had better look again.
In his new shocking and absolutely graphic exposé, Bryant's former bodyguard and Swiss national Lt. Patrick Graber is sending shockwaves through the sports world.
Dead Women Tell No Tales is Graber's unvarnished account of his time with Bryant, first as a discreet bodyguard, then as the fall guy who was accused - then cleared - of planning the murder of the witness in Bryant's rape case.
Part memoir detailing his days spent in service guarding the president of an African nation and Swiss black ops trooper, part graphic repository of his time with Kobe, Dead Women Tell No Tales is an absolute page-turner. It gives insight into the basketball superstar's most intimate surroundings, clearly showing how Bryant's immoral behavior inevitably culminated in a felony charge that could have sent him behind bars for life.
Those who are in the know praise Dead Women Tell No Tales and Lt. Patrick Graber:
"The account of Kobe participating in orgies and the description of the surroundings is accurate. I attended few of those parties myself..." --Jondell R. Montgomery, Long Beach, 2006
"Lt Patrick Graber has displayed a standard of professionalism, integrity, and devotion to our country that few have equaled and none have excelled...His honor, his loyalty, and his sense of fair play...have made him an ally whom the SPDF could rely on. He is an unusually fine man." --Col. Claude Vidot, Seychelles Peoples Defense Forces, Seychelles, 2000

Forget the high-carb, low-carb debate. The glycemic index (GI)--a measure of carbohydrate quality based on how quickly a food raises blood-glucose (blood sugar) levels--is the dietary key to health, say the authors. Contrary to other diets that treat carbohydrates as all alike, The New Glucose Revolution divides carbos according to their GI into two categories. One is high GI (less desirable): carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion, leading to fast and high blood-glucose response. Examples are baked potatoes, sports bars, instant rice, corn flakes cereal, and baguettes. The other is low GI (more desirable): carbohydrates that break down slowly during digestion, leading to a gradual glucose release. Examples here are pasta, whole grains, fruit, legumes, and yams.
A low-GI diet is especially recommended for people with diabetes, abdominal overweight, and Syndrome X, say the authors, who have strong medical, nutritional-science, and diabetes education credentials. They explain the importance of understanding GI values, how GI is determined, health applications, and how to choose low-GI foods and balance the overall GI load. They give cooking tips, menu ideas, and 47 recipes. A 68-page table gives the GI values of many foods, including brand names. The New Glucose Revolution is recommended for health-conscious readers who want to understand the glycemic index and how to incorporate it into their diet. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
A sales job rather than a 'how to'.......2007-09-12
I know this book has rave reviews, which is why I ordered it after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. But it seems to me that most of the book is bascially meant to sell the reader on the fact that the GI is a worthwhile measure to use to eat well.
It has only "more than 45 recipes"...and its "authoritative tables of GI values" are, for the most part useless. You can find most of the information for the staples listed on the Internet, like those for beans and fruits. Much of the tables include name-brand products that I would never use. For example:
--Under beverages, it lists the values for products like: Trim Advantage, President's Choice.
--Under cookies and crackers: Ancient Grains by President's Choice, Cranberry Orange by President's Choice, gluten-free choc chip cookie, Ryvita Fruit Crunch Crispbread, Wheat and Sesame Snack Crackers by President's Choice.
--Dairy: Frozen Yogurt, Mochaccino, President's Choice; for many individual flavors of Yoplait yogurt.
I bought this book to learn how to eat lower GI foods. I struggled through the first many chapters of the authors trying to convince me that GI is an acceptable measure.
If you're looking for a way to integrate the GI index into your lifestyle, I don't think this book is it -- a cookbook or comprehensive book listing GI values of foods ONLY might be better. If, however, you know nothing about the GI index, this book might prove useful.
The New Glucose Revolution.......2007-08-23
Recently I was diagnosed with prediabetes and attended a diabetes seminar on nutrition. As a longtime member of the health profession I thought I was fairly knowledgeable in the field of nutrition. Wrong again! The information in this book is easily readable and is guaranteed to change your eating habits if you have insulin resistance or any type of blood glucose problems. By following the practical information in this book I have brought my readings back to the normal range. Some of the information in this book was very surprising and unexpected. The authors give practical information that is usable. This is not a typical diet book or one that promotes new herbal or chemical miracles. My nutritionist said the glycemic index is the wave of the future. I belive it.
Good Synopsis for Complicated Subject.......2007-08-16
The glycemic index can be so daunting and overwhelming. This book summarizes the material in a clear manner using laymen's terminology. The explanations of the research and content are clearly understood. If I had to find any "short-coming," I would just ask for a lengthier list of GI foods. Close to 1,700 foods have been tested so far, and only a small fraction of these foods are included in the GI list of foods. Other than that, this books makes the GI index user-friendly!
Very informative........2007-08-09
I haven't completely finished reading the book, yet. But, it seems to cover every aspect of eating low glycemic index foods. The charts listing the ratings of foods are very helpful, as are the recipes. I've gotten a clearer understanding of how foods breakdown at different rates after you eat them. Can't wait to finish reading.
Awesome Book.......2007-05-18
I really enjoyed this book and its new views for a diabetic diet. Still trying some things out but it seems to be working so far. It cleared up a lot of things for me concerning my diet and the traditional low carb diabetic diet.

Cowboy in the Kitchen.......2007-02-21
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves Texas and Texas recipes. Our son lived in Texas for 8 years. His wife is from Texas. They were happy to get a "Texas Cookbook". GREAT recipes. The rub for steaks is fantastic.
Excellent for guys - you NEED to own this.......2005-11-12
Guys, if you want to upgrade your lifestyle from bachelor chow, if you want to impress the ladies, and most of all, if you want to have decent food at home or at work, you NEED this book. Now.
The stories are great, the author is a killer chef, and best of all, these are recipes YOU will like. If nothing else, get it to get the secret of his grill spice blend - it takes anything and makes it instanly a cut above anything else you've made.
But best of all, Mr. Spears shows us that cooking is not some girlie man thing, it's a cool thing. You'll eat better food, and women will realize you rock. I'm not kidding. Buy it now!
Simple, tasty and large portions - the way it should be.......2004-10-13
Although the recipies are good, easy to make and tasty it's the stories that accompany it that make the book. Grady doesn't try to be anyone he's not. He's a simple cowboy who enjoys cooking who fell into a career as a chef. Oh, and if you get the book, try the "Sissyfied Son-of-a-B*tch" it's definately better than it sounds.
The Best Damn Cookbook to Come out of Texas!.......2004-09-15
As an avid cook and an amateur collector of quality cookbooks, I've seen a lot of theme cookbooks like this that are often more story that recipe. This cookbook combines both and is my absolute favorite cookbook ever! The recipes are amazing (though to all of you out there counting points/carbs/calories, etc., this is probably not for you), the back story is interesting, and the knowledge expressed in these pages is priceless to anyone from an aspiring weeknight cook to the most recent C.I.A. graduate (the cooking school, not the espionage organization). In short, there's something for everyone, and everyone will love the food from this book. As I write this, I'm enjoying the buttermilk biscuits that in a few days I will make into the buttermilk biscuit pudding with Southern Comfort cream!
IT JUST DOES NOT GET BETTER.......2002-12-21
OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION.FEWER RECIPES BUT VERY COMPLETE.EASY TO FOLLOW.ESPECIALLY THE INFO ON GETTING THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS.ILLUSTRATIONS ARE ON THE RECIPE PAGE,FOR A CHANGE-VERY HELPFUL.PRACTICAL AND ELEGANT.A GOOD READ JUST BY ITSELF.THE SECTION ON BEEF AND BUYING BEEF IS BETTER THAN THE TEXAS BEEF COUNCIL ADVICE. A GOOD BUY AND REASONABLE.THE RECIPES GIVE YOU SOME OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING FOOD YOU CAN COOK YOURSELF.

Book Description
The hobby of doll collecting is attracting increasing interest the world over. Along with this surge in popularity comes a growing desire for more information concerning the origins and approximate ages of the rarer dolls which fetch extremely high prices at auctions and exhibitions. Celluloid dolls are now being spoken of in the doll world as the next 'sleeper' to awaken. The most recent celluloid dolls are more than forty-five years old, and the the oldest are true antiques, having been made at the end of the last century. Presented alphabetically by country, Celluloid Dolls of the World is Marjory Fainges's third doll encyclopaedia (following The Encyclopaedia of Regional Dolls and the Encyclopaedia of Australian Dolls) and presents new up-to-date information gleaned over many years of research, which will be of interest to toy and doll collectors, historians and enthusiasts alike.
It is now well over a decade since any definitive book has been written on the celluloid dolls that were manufactured in their millions by countries as diverse as China, Czechoslovakia,England, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and the United States. Besides the companies that manufactured complete dolls in celluloid, other companies throughout the world imported celluloid components which were assembled into dolls bearing their own respective company's identification.
This comprehensive work showcases many of the manufacturers around the world, which were making celluloid dolls from the very early years of this century until the late 1950's. Also Included are examples of the logos used and historical notes on each company. There is a special section devoted to 'Personality Dolls' such as Shirley Temple, Charley Chaplin and Popeye, and over 450 photographs of celluloid dolls made and sold around the world in the first half of the twentieth century.

New Quilts from an old favorite - always breathtaking.......2002-01-23
This is one of the books showcasing the Museum of the American Quilt Society's yearly contest "New Quilts from an old favorite". Each year a traditional block is selected for the challenge and quiltmakers from all over the world produce wonderfully inventive interpretations of the theme block. The quilts selected as prize winners and finalists are shown in the MAQS and a book is produced. Each quilt is presented in color on one page and commented on by the maker on the opposing side. Each quilter tells a little about her quilting and explains a bit about the way she arrived at the contest quilt. In the back of the book there are patterns for several sizes of the traditional block as well as further technical tips by the quilters whose work is presented in the book.
This book showcases quilts derived from the Kaleidoscope block: there are quilts you can clearly trace to that block and some where you can hardly find it, traditionally inspired quilts along with art quilts. Quite a few quilts were inspired by Paula Nadelstern's Kaleidoscope quilts.
All the books documenting this challenge are well worth owning as they are great inspirations and show the many different ways a theme can be interpreted.

Harvard professor Cornel West issues "a kind of wake-up call to each of us,"asserting that "Black America sits on the brink of collective disaster." In this collection of eight question-and-answer interviews, West seeks ideas for inspiring and reinvigorating black America. Actor-singer Harry Belafonte talks about his influences; politician Bill Bradley urges each of us to confront race in our daily lives; poet Maya Angelou makes the point that "one other word for hope is love"; and trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis discusses both music and the need to rebuild black communities. The book is a project of the Obsidian Society, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to improving conditions for black Americans. Profits from the book will benefit the organization.
Book Description
"Cornel West is one of the most authentic, brilliant, prophetic, and healing voices in America today" -Marian Wright Edelman Nine of America's most influential artists, scholars, and public figures-Maya Angelou, Bill Bradley, Harry Belafonte, Patricia Williams, Wynton Marsalis, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, James Washington, James Forbes, and Haki Madhubuti-talk with Cornel West about their political awareness, art and politics, and the possibility of hope among African-Americans today. "This book has all the freshness, all the spontaneity of good conversations anywhere, and benefits greatly from the integrity and wisdom of its contributors." -McKay Jenkins, The Star-Ledger, Newark "This is not a book for the faint-hearted. . . . Cornel West, an authentic, brilliant and prophetic black voice, deals squarely and directly with America's problems of race, recommending changes in behavior and attitude among blacks as well as whites, prescribing solutions difficult to attain, but no more difficult than perpetuation of the status quo." -Melvyn Schreiber, County Daily News, Galveston, Texas "West manages to extract something from each [contributor]. His intellectual exuberance flavors the book, and the conversations reveal important truths about our racial impasse." -In These Times

Interesting Look Into The Future of Black America.......2002-12-16
In this book sociologist, Cornel West, decided to interview prominent figures in America in order to get their feelings on the future of black America. In this book West interviews Maya Angleou, Harry Belafonte, and Bill Bradley just to name a few. West deals with all aspects of black culture. He deals with the church, music, and literature all key in understanding black thought and history. Each person included the book has a unique perspective on what direction blacks are heading for in the future. This book's main thought is that even though black poverty is an American problem, blacks have risen up from hard times in the past and will continue to be a major part of this country.
Like a good conversation...........2000-11-25
This work was like a good conversation. A bit pithy and cliched at times, it raises many important issues within the black American diaspora yet does not present any specific solutions. The reader definitely gains the sense that he or she is actually engaged in conversation with Dr. West and the other individual; however, just when the reader is about to put his two cents in, the chapter ends. The conversations with Pat Williams was the most enlightening. I guess, one could perceive the levity of the this work as optimism, a quality that earns the four stars. Definitely, a nightstand piece that preps you for a solution-oriented mind.
