Paul "Doc" Osborne should have remembered that no good deed goes unpunished. So when he agrees to help his friend Ray Pradt lead a "Fishing for Girls" fishing seminar Doc should have expected the worse. When one of the student's mother, a famous syndicated advice columnist, is found murdered, Doc is once again deputized and asked by the Loon Lake Chief of Police to help out with his forensic dental skills. Ray complicates matters as he begins to fall for one of his very married students who has a tragic past of her own, and soon Doc is up to his neck in murder and family secrets. Chief Ferris herself has her hands full with her run for Lake County Sheriff, a counterfeit money scam, and a cold case murder. Readers will be taken along as events roll along quickly to a very tidy and satisfying end.
This continues to be a strong series with no hint of letting up. Houston has created characters who continue to grow and readers will be thrilled with the evolution of Doc's romance with the lovely sheriff. Dead Jitterbug is an extremely entertaining mystery full of humor, fishing lore, wit, and suspense.
Hooked on Loon Lake.......2005-06-16
Ray Pradt is a fishing guide in Loon Lake, Wisconsin. Ray's newest idea is a two-day seminar called "Fishing for Girls". He manages to rope Doc Osborne, his neighbor, into helping him with the excursion for the girls on a new pontoon Ray is trying to sell. Doc agrees to help out but is soon pulled away from this project to help Police Chief Lewellyn Ferris. Doc Osborne's many years as a dentist and resident of Loon Lake has been a big help to Chief Lewellyn in various investigations and Chief Ferris is not slow to call on Doc for help. They are also fishing buddies and sometimes lovers.
Hope McDonald, mother of one of Ray's "seminar girls", and the author of a syndicated advice column, is found dead in her home in Loon Lake. Then it is discovered by Doc and Lew that another of Ray's "seminar girls" Molly O'Brien formerly Molly McBride whose parents resided in Loon Lake and were brutally murdered. Molly was left alone in the home with the bodies of her parents when she was only two and a half. Now twenty-seven years later Molly is back in Loon Lake and married. Lillie Wright, local attorney, is now asking Chief Ferris to try to dig up the old files and renew the investigation for the murder since Lillie believes the person convicted was framed and the murderer is still in town and Molly is beginning to believe it too.
As if all of this isn't enough to keep Chief Ferris busy she is also asked to help locate a couple who have been robbing banks. The Chief is also in the midst of a campaign for Sheriff and Doc Osborne's daughter is her campaign manager.
Victoria Houston's vivid descriptions of the area and the residents love of fishing adds much to the story. This is the sixth Loon Lake mystery and each one gets better. Be sure and read them all.

I HAVE READ ALL OF THE BOOKS IN THE LOON LAKE SERIES.EACH NEW INSTALLMENT GIVES MORE DEPTH TO THE CHARACTERS. THE PLOT ALSO HAS DEVELOPED IN EACH BOOK. WHILE NOT OVERLY COMPLICATED THERE IS PLENTY GOING ON TO RETAIN MY INTEREST.AS AN AVID FISHERMAN I LOOK FORWARD TO THESE BOOKS IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS GOING OUT ONTO THE WATER.

Like all the rest of Victoria Houston's books in the "Dead" series, I really enjoyed Dead Jitterbug. But I missed the light-heartedness tone that preceded it in the others, and, there seemed to be a little less fishing. But all-in-all, it's great, and I'm still awaiting the next! Keep 'em coming!

it seems to be a big book, but I'm sure it's good anyway. It was a featured advertisement on 8-bit theater for a while, so it might have something to do with sqare, but I'm not sure. They have thier ouw website. I'm sure of that, cause i've been there. I forgot what it was though, so just look for it in search and the website'll give you a good discription of the book

Essential book for moving beyond ADD.......2007-09-19
This books lives up to all the other testimonials. In learning to treat your child, spouse, or self it's encouraging to realize there are 6 types of ADD out there, and the treatment needs to be customized to the type or you won't be successful. Dr. Amen also has a website www.brainplace.com which provides information on the latest studies. For encouragement you should also read Edward Hallowell's books "Driven to Distraction" and "Delivered from Distraction".
Saved My Life.......2007-06-04
This book, along with Dr. Amen's Amen Clinic literally saved my life. I was bedridden, and doctors had no idea why my depression medication had stopped working. My counselor suggested this book, and, after getting tested at the Amen Clinic, I was diagnosed with Over-focused ADD. I was put on a personalized treatment program, and I almost immediately became the person I'd wanted to be for the first 19 years of my life. I could go up and talk to strangers, make friends, and not obsess over my anxiety disorder. I am now 22, and this book still helps me continue my healing process. If I could, I would give it way more than 5 stars.
The absolute final word on keeping a tight leash on ADD/ADHD!.......2007-05-28
Before I found this book, I read a couple of other self-help ADD books to get a better handle on mine. It wasn't until I saw this one and got curious about the 6 types, so I picked it up. It convinced me that all other ADD books are exactly the same. That is, they only touch base on the 2 conventional issues: Psychological and Social. This book on the other hand, introduces a third study: Biological (brain studies). Dr. Amen's expertise in general and his SPECT (a unique physical scan that looks for abnormally underactive and overactive brain activity) studies helps eliminate the chance of mis-diagnosis, which can drastically reduce symptoms so the sufferer can move ahead with his or her life. After running through the book several times over the course of a few months and recalling the discussion of my symptoms and genetic history with a psych a few years before for a diagnosis, I came to the conclusion last month that I was a Type 4: Temporal Lobe sufferer. With that said, I immediately started looking over the treatment options section and since then I've been taking the right supplements along with the recommended proper diet and intense exercise. I can easily say that I feel a WHOLE LOT BETTER!! My friends and family have told me that I'm like a whole different person now. They've noticed that I'm no longer moody and irritable, and my inattentiveness and impulsiveness have been reduced to near-nothing. Life doesn't seem so miserable anymore. I wake up everyday looking forward to facing the world and being positive. Just out of curiousity, I'd like to go The Amen Clinic for a SPECT evaluation, but it doesn't look like it'll be necessary. My friends with ADD now want to do what I did to improve their life. I want to personally thank Dr. Amen. The word needs to be spread around about his very unique brain studies!

It's not quite ten pounds and it's not intimidating at all.
I tend to resist buying popular cookbooks and use internet recipes instead. I will be referring to both of SM's recipe books before looking on the internet because her recipes suit my appetite. Also, I try to watch Sara's Secrets whenever it is on Food Network but I don't like Food Network's website so I tend to not get the recipes off their website. This book has some of the recipes including tomato pie.
In the introduction where Sara Moulton expresses her support for ingredients in their original state and cooking for yourself as opposed to grabbing convenience meals.
Here is what I particularly like about this book:
-the author's advice to adhere to the recipe the first time and then make adjustments in subsequent attempts; I actually need this to be expressed as I tend to veer off.
-roasting vegetables: I like this method and prefer to flavor soups with leftover baked veggies rather than sweating the veggies in butter and then adding liquid.
-using tahini with crab meat
- Plenty of the ingredients are yummy favorites but not super healthy e.g. chicken livers (slurp).
- The mushroom rolls recipe is just what I was looking for to make baked bao from my cuisinart french bread recipe.
- 450 degrees for Blasted Chicken
- The recipe of Indian Style Shepherd's Pie is the way to go with lamb leftovers: whenever we indulge in lamb chops, we always have at least two chops leftover and that's not quite enough for each person and leftover chops just aren't delicious. The only method that has worked is using the cubed chop meat in a lamb curry with both coconut milk and yoghurt. One person thought they were eating chicken and tasty chicken at that.
- I have to stock up on mustard and wine in a box.
- I agree with distinct portions for each person e.g. mini meat loaves.

I like Sara Moulton because she not only approaches recipes from the viewpoint of an Executive Chef but a parent and a teacher.From the warm and attractive picture of Sara on the front cover to the delicious recipes this book is worth making part of your collection! I really enjoyed how Sara connected each recipe to her family and friends. Eventhough there was a certain amount of difficulty the recipes turned out really good and in the process I felt I learned something new! I tried the seared sea scallops and onion soup omelets. ( Really Good ) Some of the ingredients were a bit difficult to find, but overall I look foward to trying more recipes from Sara Moulton Cooks at Home. Great job Sara!

As the title of her book indicates, Sara Moulton's recipes are aimed precisely at what one would want to cook at home if you enjoy cooking, have the time to spend on longer procedures, and do not wish to chase after a lot of special ingredients. In a way, that sounds like a very retro scenario, predating the current popularity of fast cooking, the renaissance of gourmet cooking of the seventies and eighties, the convenience product / soup can cooking of the fifties, and the dark days of the thirties and forties. If you ignore the cosmopolitan sources of many recipes, this a refurbished look at the kind of cooking your first generation American grandmother or great grandmother did at home.
That is not to say these recipes are especially easy. Many are not. However, I have made several dishes from this book and I have gotten more personal favorites from this book than from all my Italian cookbooks combined. That doesn't mean these are the very best recipes either, but they work. When you compare Sara's recipes for chicken stock with those in `The Best Recipe', you find many differences, but I will bet on Sara's recipe or even James Beard's recipe over the `Best Recipe'.
Sara's book includes several things I love to find in a cookbook.
First, it's very chatty and informative about how she arrived at the recipe. Outside of the kitchens of Thomas Keller, Tom Colicchio, and Charlie Trotter, for example, there are probably very few genuinely new recipes being created even today. Almost all are variations on traditional classics. How many ways, for example have you seen tomato, basil, and mozarella combined. You will see at least five more variations on this very old theme on the Food Network over the next year.
Second, Sara revels in her roots, and she has very interesting roots to celebrate, as her mentors are three of the most distinguished culinary writers of the last fifty years, including Jean Anderson, Jacques Pepin, and the incomparable Julia Child, for which Sara was an assistant for many years.
Third, the book begins with a feature which should be manditory in all cookbooks. The notes on how to use this book give the meaning of a large number of common ingredients such as eggs meaning large eggs, flour meaning general purpose flour, and butter meaning unsalted butter.
The book includes a wider variety of dishes than you may find in restaurant or speciality cuisine cookbooks. It also contains a lot of classics such as crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, apple strudel, rice pudding and oven fried chicken. While these are classics, there is usually some twist to make them fresh.
I would recommend this as a very good second cookbook, after the `Joy of Cooking', `James Beard's American Cookery', or Mark Bittman's `How to Cook Everything'. The recipes will be fresher and have greater cachet by being able to announce that they are from a celebrity chef.One caveat is that this will not teach great technique, so your third book should be the excellent books on cooking technique by Jaques Pepin or James Peterson.
Not Home Cooking 101, but she is Gourmet's Exec Chef.......2003-08-03
This is a terrific cookbook and while I feel that the title might lead some to believe that the food prepared here is more basic than what is prepared on her Food TV shows, the opposite is actually true. That said, it's important to note that these recipes, while not primer-simple are still straight-forward, well written and very user friendly.
Menu/accompaniment suggestions are included as well as wine suggestions and from my experience, they work beautifully together. The combination of Tarragon Chicken,Lemon Roasted Potatoes and Provencal Tomatoes is one of my personal favorites.
There is a great variety of recipes here that can be used for family meals as well as entertaining. A very "able" book - usable, doable, reasonable recipes. This one will not collect dust on a shelf.

This is a concise and helpful guide for all those who reside with an Eclectus parrot or hope to do so soon. Eclectus are unique in important ways other than being sexually dimorphic (males and females look different). They also do not do well on seed or pellet diets fed to many parrots. The book covers care of your bird, how to provide necessary intellectual stimulation with safe toys, information about common health problems and lots of other information critical to the well-being of your feathered friend.

I just received my copy of the book from the mail. My first impression was that it was quite thin. I was hoping for more information about breeding and aviary design, but the sections dealing with those topics were quite short. I was hoping to find a section wherein hybrids were thoroughly discussed and if a hybrid bird would have any deformities later on or if they would lead to infertile offspring.
Also, I was hoping to find more detailed analysis, and photographic documentation (probably pictures of different races perching side by side for comparison) of the different races.
Anyway, except for the above-mentioned items, I found the book quite useful specially for beginners like myself.

I received this book when I purchased my Eclectus and I am glad it was given to me. It is rather informative and to the point and is easy for a new parrot parent to find information. It has rescued me on many occassions. The only thing I wish it had was a more detailed section on illness and symptoms to watch for. Otherwise , I would hightly recommend this book for anyone considering getting one of these parrots.

I personally found Katy's recommendations for the eclectus parrot to be right on. It is nice to read an "easy to read" book with so much wonderful information. Katy does a great job of clearly describing the personality characteristics of the beautiful but sometimes independent eclectus parrot. This is a book that I will give any new owner of one of my babies because it does such a great job of describing and informing about this beautiful and great companion parrot.
If you are looking at getting an eclectus this book is a must - being [an inexpensive] book, but loaded with great information - what is the loss if you decide that an eclectus isn't for you. Thanks Katy for writing such a right on book!
A wonderful insight to Eclectus behavior.......2003-02-22
This little book provides more insight into Eclectus behavior than I have seen anywhere else. Eclectus are different from other parrots in many ways, and someone who isn't aware of this might purchase one for its beauty alone. The chapters on finding a reliable breeder and keeping a pet Eclectus healthy are especially useful.

This book does have some good information some pretty good photography as well showing health problems to look for as well as some very beautiful healthy birds. There is some good information on diseases well worth reading. It is however rather s short book for the price.
The book does need a good editor for the next time it is published. The reader will find the same sentence pasted into the text over and over I would guess as the result of abuse of a word processor.

Very interesting book. I learned a lot and was entertained as well. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's interested in the struggles of Native Americans and how they live today. Also a handy tribe map and recipes!

This book did much to enrich my very limited knowlege of the contemporary Virginia Indian . It provides a great wealth of knowlege for any reader interested in Indians living throughout Virginia today, as well as for the reader who may be introduced to the subject for the first time. It also does much to eliminate the sterotype thinking of those whose only introduction to the Virginia Indian community may be through a childhood visit to the Jamestown Settlement or the story of Pocahontas. By focusing on telling their story through personal interviews, you get to know some of these vibrant people and, the difficulties they faced growing up Indian.. As one of the women said, it was diffucult to be Indian and live in two different worlds. For anyone who wants to learn more about the subject, this is a must read! It is a great research tool for anyone who wants true insite into the history of the eight state recognized tribes in Virginia, as well as providing a fascinating account of the many compexities of Virginia Indians today It is informative, educational, well-documented and well-written!.
