Book Description

Good Debut.......2005-11-29
I enjoyed this author's "Fax" series, and I enjoyed the debut of this new series as well.
I did find the story a tad bit predictable, since I figured out fairly early who the murderer was. I also thought having these three couples so interconnected through affairs and other relationships made for a bit of confusion. And the thing that got me most was that the author didn't let us know until well into the story why Erin had chosen to move to this town, so until that point, I had a hard time getting past the coincidence of her ending up there.
The only other problem I had was with the "Gilbert and Sullivan" naming convention -- only because it's already being used in Selma Eichler's wonderful Desiree Shapiro series.
Looking forward to the next installment.
Impressive Debut!.......2005-07-28
Although still well within my definition of formulaic, this debut novel in the Domestic Bliss series is also refreshing and entertaining. There were some unfortunate typos and the occasional bit of grammatical license that left my head spinning, but otherwise the book is competently written. The two main characters are somewhat stereotypical, but their personalities may take on more original aspects as the series continues. I like mysteries that may be classified as American cozies, and this is another fine addition to the genre. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, but hope the author takes time to describe the locale and expand her characters to make them more original.
Deadly Design .......2005-03-30
This first in the new series features interior designer Erin Gilbert who finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation while participating in a design competition with her business rival, Steve Sullivan. The mystery reminds me of the classic 'locked room' mystery with a small group of interconnected suspects. There were lots of design tidbits throughout the story, and while some of the descriptions were a bit long for me (I am interested in design, but only up to a point), they added a unique dimension to the book. The main character is interesting and easy to care about. I'll seek out the next in the series.
Interior Design contest turns deadly.......2005-03-29
Erin Gilbert has been hired to redo their bedroom by Carl Henderson. He is surprising his wife. When Erin arrives, she finds out that her competitor, Steve Sullivan, has been hired to redo the neighbor's den. Apparently a competition has been set up between the two by a third neighbor, Randy Axelrod. He plans to write a story on the winner for his magazine Denver Lifestyles. Neither Erin or Steve knew about this, but they accept the contest as they could use the free publicity.
Carl's son, Taylor, is to be the carpenter for both designers. Erin soon discovers that he isn't the easiest to work with, nor is he the best carpenter. But due to time and money constraints, she vows to do the best she can with what she has to work with.
While removing the paneling in Carl's bedroom, Erin discovers her baby picture and some letters. She was adopted, but her mother made her swear, before she died, to never search for her biological parents. Could they be one of these neighbors? Erin has a tough time knowing what to do.
Then Randy keels over and dies at the hospital. Apparently he was poisoned. Someone shoots at Erin's car.
Things keep heating up and Erin soon feels she has to discover the truth about her adoption, as well as figure out who killed Randy.
I enjoyed Erin Gilbert and the tension between her and Steve Sullivan. The contest was very believable with all the reality t.v. shows. But since I'm not into interior design, I found there to often be too much description for my liking. Plus I felt that 372 pages was a bit too long. I do plan to read more in this series as they are published, because I enjoyed Gilbert and Sullivan. I just hope they aren't all as many pages. I recommend this book.
Engaging Mystery.......2005-01-05
As an advid reader w/a passionate love for good mysteries, I'm often leary of reading mysteries by unfamiliar authors for fear of being dissapointed, but won an advance copy from the publisher to be a "reader reviewer" & am so glad I signed up for the drawing. As a fan of programmes such as Changing Rooms & House Invaders, I knew that the interior design bits would definitely appeal to me. I've been reading mysteries since I was 6 years old & yet this book kept me guessing until almost the very end as to the identity of the culprit(s) & motive(s). Ms Caine really makes you care about her characters. I can hardly wait to add more books by Ms Caine to my ever growing book collection.

This is a great "How To" book for this type of illness. Mental illness is sooo cloudy in it's diagnose and treatment but this book is very helpful. You may never talk your loved one into getting help but this book will provide some "clue" into what is needed.

This book was recommended to me by a fantastic professional counselor and it has been very helpful to me. Dr. Burns has some great exercises in this book where you write down your "automatic thoughts" about anything that is causing you stress. You identify any distortions in your thinking (which are listed out for you) and then you write a new thought. I have found my depression greatly reduced as I "fix" my faulty thinking.

I first came across this book when I was nine. Since then I have read it a countless number of times. I am sixteen now, and I still look back on it from time to time. It has all the information a young teen would ever need; all in a chunky little manual. The author writes with a very compassionate tone...This is a gem of a book!

A must for every young person to read! The author not only discusses topics that are of great concern to kids, but offers many choices on how to handle difficult situations. My three kids have read this book and loved it. And when they don't have it, I'm reading it! I recommend that parents read it as well.

This book was recommended to me for my 11- and 13-year-old kids by a physician assistant. She had found it helpful for her teenagers. So I got a copy from the library to review before I let my kids see it. I thought it was excellent: a wide range of topics of interest to adolescents are addressed in an honest, sensitive style. My kids liked the book too, so we decided to buy a copy for reference--for those questions that will come up in the next few years that they don't quite feel comfortable asking Mom or Dad. I'd prefer they get their answers from this book, rather than from a boyfriend or girlfriend.

If you follow through on the "Feeling Good Handbook" you'll have little room to disagree with him. Dr. Burns' thorough review of mental fallacies should force you to retreat to complete self cognitive analysis.
If you make an concerted effort to apply what Dr. Burns' suggests. you should notice a difference in every day life.
This is a book that requires more than one read. To completely absorb and then apply what he recommends in one reading would be impossible. Keep it on a shelf within near reach.

This book is excellent. It uses time proven cognitive therapy principles and lists them in an easy to understand and use format. This book is a must for all readers. The money you save verses seeing a therapist makes it a great bargin. I'm not saying it should replace your therspist. If you are interested in Amish culture, this is a great book to read to get a snapshot of what types of challenges, ethical and medical, on a typical Amish farm. The writing style is easy to follow and very descriptive. The Amish people have such a strong faith and are very family oriented which is a refreshing change to read. If you are a nurse or a physician, you would really appreciate the ingenuity that is needed when dealing with blunt force trauma from a farming accident or just the challenge of getting to someone's rural home in 6 feet of snow.

I have used Lydia's communicating services in helping my cats through behaviorial problems and even the death of a cat. I was anxious to read her book and when it arrived in the mail and I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The stories are heartwarming and inspirational to all who love animals. I strongly recommend this book to every animal lover, who like myself, wishes to talk to animals.
A reintroduction to our first language........2001-07-25
What an awakening Ms Hiby's book provided me. She can help us all regain some basics from our earliest childhood. There's a whole world of communication and thought going on among the animals, and we miss most of it because we've grown up parroting what we were told..."they can't talk", "we don't really hear them". Well, fortunatly for me, Lydia Hiby in her simple, honest, and loving book, has reopened my mind and 'ears'. I DO remember talking with dogs and cats and cows and ducks and pigs when I was a little girl on my folks' farm. It was just part of life. That WAS my first language. Then I went to elementary school and all my focus was shifted to humans and what I now consider my second language...English. So, as I read her book and absorbed each additional example of the compassion, and understanding that the non-human creatures have of our limited and egocentric species, I remembered. The very simple awareness that reopens this 'hidden world' for us was pointed out by this lovely book, and generously shared by this talented author and communicator. I'm thankful and enriched.

I got this book as a gift from a friend who had Lydia do a reading on her horse. I have always been facinated with anyone who can talk to the animals and was thrilled to find a section where I could learn how to do it! I had previously purchased "how to" video tapes and was very dissappointed to find that they had no instructional value and were just testimonials about the communicator. This book was a facinating read and a great guideline! My dog and I are most grateful!

This book is written from the heart! The experiences are insightful and moving. It opens the mind to the potential within us to deepen our bond not only with our own companions, but with all animals on this planet. The techniques outlined are the building blocks to develop the "communicator" inside us all. Lydia and her book have opened a new world for me. She has dedicated her life to her gift and has inspired me to follow in her footsteps. Everyone has their own talent and path and none of us is perfect. Views from another animal communicator.......2001-07-23
Conversations with Animals is as honest as my friend and mentor, Lydia Hiby. Unlike some other books on this subject that I have read, Lydia acknowledges the influence of her (and my) teacher, Beatrice Lydecker, and passes on the wisdom that Bea shared with so many people. Lydia also lets us know that her communication skills developed because of great effort on her part. ESP is not a magical, unique ability only a few of us have. Everyone has sixth (and more) senses, and Lydia does not exhalt herself above anyone else, despite the celebrity status she has achieved. Lydia is a humble, real person who is concerned with the welfare of her fellow beings and she expresses this attitude nicely in her book. If we read this book carefully, we can glean good instruction and inspiration from it. I certainly am honored to include Conversations with Animals in my animal communications books library.

The demand for rock and pop memorabilia has created a diverse and eclectic market including original manuscripts and artwork by the musicians as well as mass-produced artefacts aimed at fans in the 1950s and 1960s that have become rare collector's items in the 21st century.
The various memorabilia are categorised by chapter as autographs, letters and manuscripts; recordings; guitars and other instruments; costumes; posters; printed artefacts; merchandising; awards and artwork. There is also a chapter titled Collector's Information and the book concludes with a bibliography and index.
Christie's Rock Memorabilia is a superb guide to this fast growing collector's market. The book is richly illustrated with full colour photographs and the text contains interesting anecdotes on some of the artists and the specific items of memorabilia. Even if you're not a collector, this is a fascinating read and a great reference work. Music fans will love it.

Exelente narrativa, impresionante la manera como el autor describe cada detalle de la de las situasiones que atraviesa y de sus pensamientos mientras estas situaciones ocurren.
Una vez que comienzas a leerlo ya no puedes parar y te quieres llevar el libro a todas partes, para saber que le depara a Franky en el proximo capitulo.

Soy aficionada a la lectura, y en especial las autobiografias y memorias me atraen, Frank McCourt definitivamente es el mejor, sus letras son reveladoras, dramaticamente expresadas, y un vocabulario sencillo y real del vivir cotidiano, su libro Cenizas de Angela es una historia que llega al corazon.

DE LECTURA FLUIDA, SIN GRANDES PRETENSIONES ESTRUCTURALES MAS CON UNA SENSIBILIDAD DIGNA DE SER VIVIDA, ESTE ES UN LIBRO QUE NOS RECUERDA QUE EL SER HUMANO, ADEMAS Y ENTRE OTRAS COSAS NUNCA DEBERA OLVIDAR SU PROPIA CONDICION HUMANA. Es una historia real. Es increible como su hijo mayor saco su familia adelante y como su padre no le importaba su familia dedicado al alcohol. Fue muy duro en que los ninos se acostaran sin comer cuando su padre se bebia el dinero, y como la gente era tan ignorante para todo. Aveces leia y me daba coraje. Queria meterme en ese libro y caerle a patadas al padre y toda esa gente ignorantes. Hoy termine de leer mi libro y quisiera leer la continuacion. Es un libro maravilloso y triste. Quisiera saber cuando van hacer el proximo libro en Espanol. Estoy impaciente por leerlo.

Tuve la oportunidad de leer esta asombrosa narración de la vida de Frank McCourt, Persona que pasó la mil y una, quedé interesado tanto en la lectura, que inmediatamente compré por la Web, el siguiente libro "Lo Es", que es una continuación de esta tremenda historia donde el sufrimiento a veces se viste de gozo...y luego el gozo se convierte en llanto...

Dentro de lo que cabe es una narracion preciosa de lo que tuvo que pasar esta persona, que fueron bastante crueles, la relacion tan estrecha con su madre,
