Everyone in the Scottish Highlands village of Lochdubh called Randy Duggan the Macho Man. Duggan went around the village and bragged about everything he had done and said he once was a wrestler in America and an explorer in the Middle East. At first his outrageous stories drew an admiring crowd at the local pub, but soon his bullying ways led to anger and violence. When the local constable, Hamish Macbeth, tries to break up a fight, Duggan challenges him to a public fistfight. But on the day of the scheduled fight, Duggan is found shot to death. Of course, Macbeth's superiors get wind of the fight and suspend him during the investigation. Macbeth has some suspicions about Duggan's real background--and the mysterious banker, John Glover, who shows up at the posh Tommel Castle Hotel shortly before Duggan's death. And what about Rosie Draley, the sex-crazed romance writer, who had been having an affair with the two-timing Duggan? Once again, Macbeth's career is in hot water and he must find a murderer to clear his name--and to get back his job and the cushy life (fishing and mooching around the village) he leads.

Absolutely the best.......2007-05-15
Probably one of the best in the Macbeth series. Enjoyed the plot and the action. Great character development. The interation between Hamish and Priscilla is priceless.
Two Novels in One.......2007-04-20
It's always a challenge keeping a mystery series fresh. Many times readers will react negatively to changes you put in place. In Death of Macho Man, M.C. Beaton does something few mystery writers could accomplish: She builds up enough plot complications for two mysteries and lets her characters be much more active than usual. The result is immensely satisfying for giving you more of what you like about Hamish Macbeth stories: Mysterious deaths; unexpected motives; romantic complications; prickly interactions with Priscilla Halburton-Smythe; failed attempts by Detective Chief Inspector Blair to get Hamish fired; by-play with the Lochdubh villagers; and exciting action sequences. Don't miss this book!
As usual, an outsider is causing problems in Lochdubh. Randy Duggan claims to have been a professional wrestler in America and likes to brag about his exploits. He has plenty of muscles and tattoos, but his stories don't always ring true. Duggan can usually gain an audience by buying drinks all round with his wad of cash. But after awhile, even free drinks begin to pale as Randy's need to brag nonstop in unconvincing ways becomes boring. Physical confrontations start and Hamish has to sort things out. Duggan wants a piece of Hamish and Hamish makes the mistake of agreeing to fight Duggan while Hamish is off duty. The whole area gets a bet down and arrives to watch the fun. Things turn nasty, however, when Duggan is found dead with his head blown off by a shotgun. Naturally, Hamish is the top suspect.
From that taut beginning, the story builds in intensity as Hamish works in secret to find the real killer. Priscilla Halburton-Smythe has her biggest role in many books, and all of the challenging dimensions of their relationship are put to a test (including teaching Hamish how to use a computer). The mystery deepens as Hamish begins to find out unpleasant facts about two local residents. Everything is up in the air once the pathologists realize that Duggan has had plastic surgery. What was he trying to hide?
A great subplot in the book is the attention paid to Hamish's relationships with his friends among the villagers. As the investigations continue, Hamish finds himself in trouble with the villagers as well as with the police leaders in Strathbane.
You'll also like seeing Hamish become a lot more reckless and less lazy. It shows a side of him that only occasionally is revealed in the earlier books.
Highly recommended!
How Does MC Beaton manage to keep this series so fresh?.......2003-12-31
This is the twelfth entry in the Hamish Macbeth series, and it's a winner! Probably my favourite so far. I just don't know how MC Beaton does manage to keep Hamish and his series so fresh and delightful. She is a superb author and characterizes like no one else in the business! In this book Hamish is up against a village bully and braggart, and then the bully turns up dead. All of the police force believe they have their killer (after all he even confessed), but only Hamish doesn't think they've got the right man. He goes out sleuthing on his own, and sets himself up against all the police brass. He is at his best in this book, and for those who haven't had the pleasure of entering Hamish's world, this book wouldn't be a bad place to start. Quite Wonderful!
A great book and a great mystery.......2003-06-27
This is the twelfth in a series of mysteries featuring the detective work of small town, Highland Scottish detective Hamish Macbeth, P.C. A loudmouthed bruiser of a man has established himself in Lochdubh, but when he starts to bully those smaller than himself (everyone), Hamish decides that it is time to deal with him. But, when the man is found dead (drugged, tied up, and blasted with a shotgun), Hamish sets out to find out who did it and why. And when a second person is murdered, the plot continues to thicken...
Being a dyed-in-the-wool Hamish Macbeth fan, I can tell you that this is another great Hamish mystery, just as good as the rest. The story was quite fascinating, and I have always enjoyed M.C. Beaton's (pseudonym of Marion Chesney) Highland setting - the characters are quite fascinating as is the environment of the Highlands themselves. Overall I thought that this was a great book, and a great mystery. If you like mysteries, or are merely interest in the Scottish Highlands, then you must get this book!
A Bragging Bully disturbs Hamish's peace.......2002-09-05
Randy "Macho Man" Duggan has arrived in Lochdubh and is causing no end of trouble. He was at first welcome in the little village, as he was very generous at the local bar. People were also amused by his tall stories. But, he never let anyone else talk and bullied anyone else who tried. Hamish caught him dropping a retired schoolteacher into the water and tried to stop him. He ended up challenged to a fight that would only lose him his job and possibly a few teeth. On the day of the fight, however, Randy didn't show. Archie McLean found him dead in his rented cottage and Hamish is the prime suspect according to Blair. Hamish has to find out what really happened and in the process, finds another murder and has a run in with a master criminal, Gentleman Jim.
This was as usual a very quick and entertaining read. Priscilla is at her best here, keeping Hamish at arm's length, yet helping him every step of the way. Lochdubh is the murder capital of the Scottish Highlands.

A True Gem for any Comic's Fan! .......2006-01-13
Stacked Deck is what every comics fan should have. It's purple leatherbound with gold painted page-edges when closed and a red-ribbon bookmark (okay so the color combo sound's weird, just look at the picture and you'll get a better idea.
The packaging is perfect, considering this is not just any comic book or graphic novel. 351 pages. Almost half a century spanning of stories, as well as a biography index in the back and a couple of articles from some of the greatest artists and writers to ever touch a pen to one of Batman's most interesting and terrifying villians.
This expanded edition of "The Greatest Joker Stories Ever told" is a treasure trove of both varying artwork and storytelling. Batman, created by Bob Kane, needed to start off with a bang, and that needed to be a villian that was as strong, smart, and evil as batman was a fighter for justice and peace through revenge and retribution to the crime ridden street's of Gotham City.
The stories that surround the Joker are nothing short of spectacular, with his James Bond (before James Bond) gadget's of death and that sinister smile, The Joker's legend grew into one of the greatest fictional characters of all time, along with his archnemesis, The Batman. Also making multiple appearances in the stories is Robin, boy wonder, Batman's longtime sidekick!
25 Stories from 1940 - 1987 coming from Detective Comic's archives as well as the original title of "Batman" You won't want to miss this!
Nicely Bounded; A Must Collection for Batman Fans.......2005-06-19
With additional commentary from DC greats Denny O'Neil and other DC Editors/writers, etc, this book takes several Joker stories from Batman No. #1 1940 to the Last Laugh presented in Detective Comics No. #570 in 1987.
The commentary, end notes and brief bio sketches on the many writers and artists on these Batman/Joker stories is also a nice touch. Are these teh greatest Joker stories, well, maybe not, but many are and most of them are good. This book was published in part because of the success of Batman in 1989, of which the Joker was well received by theviewing publc.
Book Description
"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills." -- Larry King
"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes." -- Harvey McKay, author of “How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive”
What is that magic quality makes some people instantly loved and respected? Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover!) In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder. What is their "Midas touch?"
What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people.
The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success. In her book How to Talk to Anyone (Contemporary Books, October 2003) Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques-- she takes the reader from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life. In this information-packed book you’ll find:
- 9 ways to make a dynamite first impression
- 14 ways to master small talk, "big talk," and body language
- 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity
- 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd
- 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone
- 9 ways to feed someone's ego (and know when NOT to!)
- 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool
- 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room
- 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive
In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you'll remember them when you really need them, including: "Rubberneck the Room," "Be a Copyclass," "Come Hither Hands," “Bare Their Hot Button,” “The Great Scorecard in the Sky," and "Play the Tombstone Game,” for big success in your social life, romance, and business.
How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter)is based on solid research about techniques that work!
By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything. This one is completely different!

ONLY BOOK YOU NEED!!!.......2007-10-03
If you only read one book on communication, make this the one. It's easy, concise, accurate, gives the "why" behind the tricks. Great examples, but not so many that you want her to get on with it. We're busy people and this is a great book that only takes 2 days-1 week to read. So concise!!!
9 Sections: each helps you master a different type of communication.
A gray box at the end of each "tip" with a 2-3 sentence summary with a catchy phrase for the tip to help you remember it (great if you just want the tips and don't care to read the whole book).
The author's witty, pleasant, and brilliant. High-brow tips that take no time at all to learn with her book!!! Just invest less than a week to read this and it will change all of your relationships (and maybe will help you score better financial deals, get you that job, etc.)!
Good read.......2007-09-13
It's worth noting the information and seeing that in using her suggestions, you will break the habit of isolation.
It really works!.......2007-09-04
Another new bestseller which I highly recommend - The Exclusive Layguide: When Dating and Having Sex with Incredibly Hot Women is No Longer Mirage Even If You Don't Look Like a Model or Don't Make a Fortune
Insightful & Fun.......2007-08-17
A very easy book to read. I found the beginning half very insightful, fun, and useful and will be the portion that I take notes on the most. Some points made me realize I've been doing that already and now I can continue that with purpose. I've caught others doing certain points to me recently as well, in retrospect, as I was reading the book, the sticky/epoxy eyes in particular.
The latter half of the book felt too "business" like to me, speaking of how Politicians work the room etc, is something that I really can't relate too, but the points of what to do are good. A lot of examples and stories are centred around business and sales stuff, which from time to time was a turn off for me, and schmoozing with big wigs at elite parties which really isn't my thing either. One just has to apply their own scenarios when visualizing the techniques in your world.
The book ended well despite my ever slight disappointment through the half way mark. It's my first self help book and I'm glad to have read it.
I may have given it 4 stars, but unfortunately I'm in the 4th chapter of an eye opening book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyways, and with that I would have to give this book, How to Talk to Anyone, a solid 3.
from shy to charismatic.......2007-07-30
Wonderful read. this book really details how to converse and mingle. I am a self proclaimed shy guy and this has done wonders. keep it Mrs. lowndes

Customer Reviews:
great book for cheesecake lovers.......2007-06-04
i love that book! First of all, the recipes are great, i tried one of the recipes this weekend and result was wonderful. I got some requests from my friends for more cheesecakes in the future gatherings!
And also it is very practical in size, you can put it in your bag and go to the supermarket for shopping, or put it on the kitchen counter without reserving too much space.
And I saw there are a couple of egg-free recipes, which i have not tried yet (but i will soon). That gives some options for egg-allergics, or to the lacto-vegetarians..
50 Best Cheesecakes.......2007-01-15
I did not like the fact that I had no pictures, the printing was small, selections of cheesecakes were not that great.
Disappointing.......2006-12-28
Like all the other reviews say, there are no pictures in this book. It is a tiny little book. The recipes all look like they'd be ok, but I guess I am more into plain old cheesecake than with the exotic flavors of the recipes in this book. If you are looking for a lot of with cheescake recipes with LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of different flavors, this is book for you!
Only Cheesecake Cookbook You'll Ever Need.......2006-07-10
This is the first cheesecake cookbook I bought. I found it easy to substitute other ingredients to change the flavor of a given cheescake. My friends think I'm a cheesecake guru and beg me to bring a cheesecake to parties and get togethers. They even offer to purchase the ingredients. I love this book and can't imagine making a cheesecake without it! It easy to make a great cheesecake when the recipes are so easy to follow.
Reserving final judgement.......2006-06-07
Tiny book, no pictures, I mean absolutely no pictures. I'm very picture oriented when it comes to cookbooks. But I'm reserving final judgement til I try the recipes. But seriously no pictures at all, so disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
entertaining more than helpful.......2007-06-17
I enjoyed the book, but as a rule unless you plan to breed or show your corgi this book will be of limited use.Found few helpful hints as I plan to keep my corgi as a pet.
just good.......2007-05-13
Good mix of photos, history and temperment of a Corgi in the book. It helped us to understand and relate to our Corgi and work with her personality - it's easy to expect all dogs to be the same. We learned such is not the case with a Corgi and because of understanding a Corgi's temperment [through this book] we have a wonderful time with our dog.
Good "All Around" Information on a Great Little Dog.......2002-03-19
This book isn't meant to be an all inclusive guide to owning a corgi, as the writers admit to early on in the book. I've already read those types of books, but I was looking for something different to give a friend who is considering getting a corgi. It is charming and nailed dead on what living with a corgi is like. I've "been owned" by a pembroke for 10 years now and I recognized a lot of behaviours and characteristics familiar to this breed. It's a fun read with lots of great photos for anyone contemplating the purchase of a corgi. It discusses their health issues, personality traits, physicality, along with their intriguing history and myth. It's honest about both the good and bad points of the breed. I think this book makes an excellent complement to other more detailed sources on corgis and addresses what they never could = just how wonderful these little dogs are. A must for anyone seriously considering sharing their lives with a corgi.
Coffee table book.......2001-07-16
I was looking for info on training my corgi in the various categories mentioned in the review - obedience, agility, herding. No methods were discussed, only that the corgi can be trained to do these things. The book did give addresses of clubs that might help with these tasks. Not the reference book I was looking forward to, more of a coffee table book. The little story, poem?, about how corgis came from the wee folk was excellent and somewhat redeemed the book. All in all, I was a little disappointed.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Family Friend and Farmhand.......2001-05-24
This is the best book on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi that I have found. The author covers everything from the history, buying, health, grooming, versatility of the breed (obedience, agility, herding and therapy dog). Every picture and every bit of information are all breed specific. That is what I like about this book. It has a wealth of information and I learned what sets the Pembroke Welsh Corgi apart from other breeds.

This book is more than just a price book. It uses a series of questions to help you nail down just what you are looking at. In the BASICS section you find the different types of glazes as Lead glaze, Tin glaze, and Salt glaze. The book is small enough that I carry this with me.
Some of the highlights are:
Uses a unique question-and -answer approach to help you identify and date genuine antique glass
Deals with fakes, copies, condition and other factors that may confuse even experienced collectors
Analyses typical items that collectors can find in shops and auction houses
Gives Guidelines to values
Contains a wealth of background information, including an extensive glossary
Is a thorough introductory course for the beginner and also a superb refresher for those with some collecting experience.

Candy wrappers and light bulbs........2005-04-13
Felix Gonzales-Torres ( 1957-1996 ) was a many-sided artist.
He uses photographs, A1 sheets of paper stacked one upon the other, light bulbs ( white not
colored ) and even large amounts of candy wrappers with the same colour.
He has everything of a minimal art performer and yet the materials he uses ( albeit not at the same time ) and the different ways of displaying his art ( walls of buildings, corridors, rooms and staircases ) are so complex that it would be laughable to call his work 'minimal art'.
If it's necessary to give him a name I would call him an explorer. I believe it's the purpose of an artist to search what lies beyond the horizon.
I believe also in the value of abstract art. It emphasizes the essence of what we see: colour, shape and the different relations between one and the other.
Art with artificial light is the fascinating area between abstract painting and sculpture. Only a few artists so far, had the courage to walk that borderline and one of them was Gonzales-Torres.
His 'light-art' is simple ( He uses for instance only burning white lamps ). For example a large corridor in a modern building has several garlands of light against one wall, or strings of white lights attached to the ceiling and pouring down like rain to the floor to form a pool of light.
If you want to know all about Gonzales and his different forms of art, please read the fascinating
book " Felix Gonzales-Torres " by William Bartsman and others.

It took me months to track down a copy of Connie's book, but it was well worth it. Growing up as a second generation Korean American interested in becoming a journalist, I knew of very few Korean and Asian American journalists, especially women. I found Kang's memoir inspiring, detailed and well written. I read the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. There were so many moments in the story that I felt like she was talking directly to me. Even if you're not Asian American, the story is universal and explores the questions of identity, understanding, and growing up.
A very well written journey.......2003-02-15
This is basically an autobiography of Connie's life. Very well written and insightful at times. She can look at Korean culture from both within and without. Overall, I'd recommend it.
dry.......1999-10-23
It was difficult to finish reading this book. It's very boring, mainly because the writer seems so reluctant to reveal herself and her feelings. For example, she falls madly in love with her husband and suddenly they are divorced. Why she would write a memoir is hard to figure out. Since she is interested in a particular period of Korean history, she should have written a journalistic history book.
A fascinating work-monumental in scope.......1999-04-20
This is a fascinating work--monumental in scope and content. I would recommend it to all readers who are interested in learning more about Asian Americans and Asia. It should be a required text in secondary and college social science and literature classes. Connie Kang writes with insight and knowledge that is extraordinary.
Superbly written bio that also educates us about Korean Hist.......1998-11-26
This is my first book written about Korea. As an adopted Korean woman, searching for knowledge about my homeland has become central. Thus, from a friend's suggestion, I read Connie's book about her own life of displacement. Although she was born in Korea, she spent little time actually living within the boudaries of her own country. Her story begins several generations earlier from her own, chronicling the events that inevitably changed outside views of Korea, and also Korea herselve. More than just a lesson in history, it is a book so well written it sings.
I recommend this book for anyone, no matter your cultural heritage. It is important that her story be heard, as a record of the struggles new immigrants experience in this country. Besides inspiring me to learn and do more about Korea, she has given me a good starting point to work from. I no longer feel as ignorant about my own people.
