Book Description

Sheriff Walt Longmire finds unspeakable viciousness in Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains

Craig Johnson garnered both praise and an enthusiastic readership with his acclaimed debut novel featuring Sheriff Walt Longmire, The Cold Dish. Now Johnson takes us back to the rugged landscape of Absaroka County, Wyoming, for Death Without Company. When Mari Baroja is found poisoned at the Durant Home for Assisted Living, Sheriff Longmire is drawn into an investigation that reaches fifty years into the mysterious woman's dramatic Basque past. Aided by his friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and newcomer Santiago Saizarbitoria, Sheriff Longmire must connect the specter of the past to the present to find the killer among them.

5 out of 5 stars A keeper for me............2007-09-14

I can't remember when I have enjoyed a book more!! Great characters and story line.

3 out of 5 stars Good in Every Respect But...........2007-08-03

...But I found this book nevertheless to be slow and boring. I don't know what it is. The characters are interesting and well-developed. The plot was a little complicated, but good. The writing was deft, almost lyrical at times. Humorous in a few spots, also. But, for me, it just didn't catch fire. Things moved too slowly. I found Johnson's writing style a little affected. Although I enjoyed the book, it wasn't by much. Though his second book, it's my first. I'll try the other book, but all things considered, I'm just gonna give this one three stars. I prefer C.J. Box, when it comes to writing about Wyoming.

5 out of 5 stars Time Runs Slow in Absaroka County.......2007-07-20

If you like Tony Hillerman, you'll enjoy this book. It reads on Indian time. Absaroka County is definitely backwater territory and Sheriff Longmire's manner of investigating crime slows life down so that we can savor the story. Craig Johnson is meticulous in developing his supporting characters, some are recognizable by their dialogue alone. The banter between Longmire and Henry Standing Bear is full of dry humor and down right funny at times.

This book is written true to life as very little happens the way Hollywood would cast it. I found myself drawn into the story because the characters remind me of people I know and the sequence of events is that which is common to the average man. Allow time to finish this book when you start because it's hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Walter, Get Your Gun..........2007-06-21

Craig Johnson's second Walt Longmire mystery sparkles like new fallen snow in bright moonlight. A Basque woman murdered in a nursing home, a link to someone close to Walt, a clubbing, shots ringing out, this one's got it all. Craig Johnson can write. He's got a freshness and knack for description that reminds one of James Lee Burke. I could use a little less of the Indian mysticism, but that's just personal preference. I can skip those few pages and read the rest word for word, then sometimes back over again. Good stuff, Craig. Keep 'em coming.

4 out of 5 stars Sheriff and Company Investigate.......2007-06-15

In this second of a series Walt Longmire is a sheriff in a small Wyoming town. Lucian Connally, the former sheriff and a current resident of the Durant Home for Assisted Living, is convinced a fellow resident did not die a natural death. His convictions are complicated by his past relationship with the woman, Mari Baroja. The sheriff investigates Lucian's allegations while also delving into the past.

A major strength of the book is that Johnson introduces an incredible number and variety of characters. The town doctor is not just the local doctor, but a survivor of a concentration camp. Here Sheriff Longmire describes his deputy, "I looked at my recently divorced deputy, a beautiful, intelligent woman with a body like Salome and a mouth like a saltwater crocodile." pg 151. Johnson makes it seem like each person in this fictional Wyoming town is interesting in a unique way. Mari Baroja and her family's identification as Basque is mentioned; more information on that transplanted culture would add to the book.

The writing is enjoyable. Some of it is just quirky and gives you a sense of the main character. "I pulled my pocket watch out and consulted it as to lunchtime; we concurred that it was early but acceptable." pg 54. At other points there were phrases that I almost missed and then wondered what they really meant. "I smiled as the feathers brushed the inside of my chest like they always do when I get irritated." pg 42.

The mystery from the past was almost too easy to figure out. The present day problems with increasing violence and danger keep one interested in the plot. There are some dream sequences that I felt did not really mesh with the rest of the book. It helps with background to read The Cold Dish first.

        3 out of 5 stars something lacking.......2007-04-15

I dont know there was something missing in this book for me. Dont get me wrong, Anatole, over the course of this series has fast become my faverate character of the series so far as he does appear in 4 novels at least. But by Clan book Malkavain i was hoping to find out and understand his madness a little more rather than listen to him and a Lasombra faffle on about christainity and caine. 3 times!!! Malkavain is one of my faves and i found no insight to madness here.

4 out of 5 stars Prophet, Madman, Vampire.......2005-05-11

In the skies over Paris a comet flares in the skies and on the streets below fear reaches the hearts of human and vampire kindred. Rumors that Cain has returned to save his faithful and damn the rest run rampant, creating a nightmarish atmosphere that sets vampire against vampire and tests the faith of both the righteous and the heretical. Into this turmoil comes Anatole, determined to oppose the Cainite heresy, and Zoe, his adopted childer, who desires to understand the sources of Anatole's belief as she struggles with her own nature.

Alexander, prince of the city, finds himself caught between the comet's effect on his consort and his duty to his court. He has allowed Anatole to return and permitted a heretical bishop to give a series of lessons, little suspecting that the result would be disagreement, debate, and even riot. Among the pilgrims outside the city the same strife is echoed as Malachite welcomes his followers into safety and then finds that his own quest is driving him in unexpected directions. The dream awaits the dreamer as the sky burns.

Having lived through one novel told from the point of view of a Malkavian, I have some qualms in picking up this one. But Ellen Kiley has opted for a portayal of Anatole that is often considerably saner than the vampires around him. In fact, his defense of his faith in the face of a powerful Lasombran bishop is a lesson in clarity. Zoe is gradually coming into her own powers, and the two of them always seem to fine a way to carry through a maelstrom of events.

This is very nearly a perfect World of Darkness novel. All of the characters are interesting, many themes find a temporary resolution and then move on, and there is action aplenty. My one complaint is that the theological argument between Anatole and Bishop St. Lys is overdone. On the one hand I appreciated the added understanding of why Anatole and Malachite are at odds with the heretical Cainites, but I could have lived without all the fine grained details of the argument. I found myself occasionally skipping around.

But theology aside this is a very good chapter in the story of vampires as they lived before the Masquerade - before kindred and kine became more of a business than a dark and terrible story.

          3 out of 5 stars At last! A "semi-official" history of Andorians.......2000-04-21

Last Unicorn Games' exciting book,"The Andorians: Amongthe Clans" (the actual title of what Amazon was calling "TheAndorians: Setting Book") is a support manual for use in LUG's series of Star Trek roleplaying games. This one is written by S. John Ross, Steven S. Long and Adam Dickstein.

Finally, we have a "real" book about Andorians. Sadly, for copyright reasons, LUG was not permitted to incorporate ANY of Trek fandom's Andorian "lore". Because none of the various Star Trek TV series, or movies, have given us much in the way of canonical information about the blue-skinned, antennaed aliens called Andorians, it had been left to fandom to fill in the blanks through fanzines. This manual actually debunks such non-canonical works as mythology.

This book offers a quite different, but quite intriguing, background for the Andorians. Three sub-races of Andorians are identified: the predominant Thalassan, with high, knobby antennae (as seen in the original Trek); the Talish (of ST:TMP), who have forward, tendril-like antennae; and the Bish'ee (of TNG), who have diminishing antennae standing straight out from their head.

LUG's thoughtful and richly detailed material is a great source for introducing these warriors into Trek roleplays.

          Book Description

It's been the super food of the East for at least two millennia, and it's finally made a name for itself here. No matter what dish it's added to--from soups to desserts--tofu makes the meal healthier and better. On its own, this soft, white beancurd has virtually no taste, but it has a remarkable ability to "drink up' the flavors and seasonings it's marinated in. Plus, tofu comes in different textures, so it's a perfect substitute for meat, fish, cheese, or eggs. You've probably heard of its almost miraculous ability to lower the risks for heart disease, cancer, and according to the newest research, Alzheimer's, but you may not have known how to prepare it. This comprehensive, all-vegetarian tofu cookbook celebrates tofu's versatility 350 ways, with easy-to-follow recipes that will expand your horizons and tickle your tastebuds: Tofruitty smoothies, Tofu huevos rancheros, banana bread, mock tuna salad, tofu "crab" cakes, tropical cheesecake escape, and even pecan pie!

5 out of 5 stars Tofu Is Not Just for Vegetarians!.......2007-08-24

The wonderful recipes in this cookbook would stand alone to please a cook who is looking for healthy and delicious meals.
But what I love about it most is the amount of recipes that are dairy free. Anyone who needs to cut down or eliminate dairy from their diets (for health and allergy reasons) will find it a GREAT resource.
I admit, the first recipe I tried was the ice cream. I was pleasantly suprized how deliciuos it was. Especially the chocolate version!
To think of being able to ENJOY ice cream (in any creative flavors I choose) without the consequences is a dream!
The dairy free recipes and meals in this cookbook have brought back the joy of cooking again!
          Thank Heavens for this cookbook!!

2 out of 5 stars Tofu for people who don't like tofu.......2007-01-20

The title of my review basically summarizes my overall impression of this book. The recipies included may cover everything from breakfast to dinner to desserts and drinks, but the overall slant is towards finding ways to hide tofu in recipies or substitute it for other things, instead of recipies that put tofu in the spotlight and put it to best use. Their are lots of "mock"-style recipies ("Mock Egg Salad", "Tastes Just Like Chicken" Burgers), but a surprising lack of, say, traditional Asian-style recipies that have incorporated tofu for centuries without seeing it as a substitute for something else. It is also strictly vegetarian--a fact not mentioned anywhere in the title or description on the back of the book. That may be what some readers want, but tofu can combine in interesting ways with meat and chicken and you won't find any such recipies here.

Nutritional information is also lacking, a strange omission for a book that otherwise is so focused on health and wellness issues. I also found some recipies I tried very bland and needed to add or adjust the seasoning in order to make it palatable.

I would not especially recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Why was this piece of trash called into existence?.......2006-05-25

I do not believe I have ever read a worse vegetarian cookbook. The authors seem to not actually like tofu as a food. All of these recipes are centered on hiding tofu in otherwise decent recipes. Among the greater atrocities: Tofu Cole slaw (make Cole slaw, throw in some tofu), tofu pecan pie (note to the authors: the women of Georgia will soon be haunting you), and "Greek Salad with 'Insteada Feta'" (because feta doesn't have a strong and distinctive flavor or anything). The basic premise of this book seems to be that tofu is disgusting stuff that must be disguised and that it has no flavor and no presence in a dish such that one can throw in tofu in anything and it stays the same. There are in fact many, many recipes that utilize tofu as an important and tasty ingredient, such as "Fried Bean Curd and Mushrooms" from Madhur Jafferey's World Vegetarian. The cuisine's of China and Japan, especially the subset of monastery cooking, are rife with delicious tofu dishes; in fact the cuisines of much of the world are rife with delicious and nutritious vegetarian cuisine such that one could live their entire lives are an incredibly healthy vegetarians without every touching tofu or mock meat (as many Indian vegetarians have for centuries). So, if you don't like tofu, just don't eat it, its fine. If you are looking for better vegetarian cookbooks, try Madhur Jafferey's World Vegetarian, the Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen, or Real Vegetarian Thai, just to name a few. Give this steaming pile of tofu [...].

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth It.......2006-03-14

I do not recommend this cookbook at all. It has a lot of colorful photos and an appealing layout, but like another reviewer stated, there is no nutritional information. Another problem with this cookbook is that the authors stole many of their recipes from another far superior book, "Tofu Cookery" by Louise Hagler, which was published years earlier. Here are some recipes that were directly lifted from another person's work: Chinese Sweet and Sour Balls, Zucchini Frittata, Russian Dressing, To-Foo Yung, Tofu "Crab"cakes, Tofu Falafels, Frozen Peanut Butter Pie, and Chocolate-Almond Pie just to name a few! There are so many more that they copied, and I almost wonder if that is why there is no nutritional information for any recipes. They didn't even bother to test the recipes, but instead spent their time and money on an impressive layout all the while copying someone else's work. I realize there are many cookbooks published and not all recipes can be original, but this one in particular is bothersome since it appears the authors were lazy and dishonest. One recipe after another is identical to recipes included in a book published almost 20 years earlier.

          2 out of 5 stars Just wasn't for us..........2006-01-07

I had a Tofu cookbook that I got from Sunset years and years ago that was far superior to this book. The main issue we have is that recipes are really not something we would eat normally. Plus, there is no nutritional information for any recipe and, because of some dietary restrictions, we really needed to know fat and sodium content. I don't think this is a *bad* book - just don't think it is the right book for us!

          Book Description

The one issue on which all horse owners agree is that proper diet and nutrition are the most essential aspects of horse care. In Storey's Guide to Feeding Horses, equine nutritionist Melyni Worth addresses the many ways in which diet impacts a horse's health, temperament, and performance.

Worth covers the basics, discussing the details of the nutrients every horse needs, and how to calculate rations based on the horse's body weight. She also explains the benefits of grains and grasses, as well as the relative value of additives and herbal supplements. And, she teaches owners how to design a balanced feeding program for their horses.

Perhaps most important is the chapter on "Feeding for a Lifetime." Here, Worth outlines the proper diet a horse needs at every age and at every level of activity. She describes the healthiest formula for foals and the most nutritional diet for brood mares and performance horses. Nutrition for elderly horses receives special attention here, with valuable information on soft feed for aged horses that have trouble chewing. Worth also identifies the treats that are best for horses, and how to overcome a horse's food-related vices. Finally, Worth offers guidance on pasture maintenance and how to store feed safely.

This book also includes advice on seasonal feeding routines. For example, since fiber is essential for warmth, owners should make certain their horses receive plenty of hay in the winter. During the summer, horses should have free access to fresh water and loose salt. Worth concludes with a detailed discussion of nutritional disorders and their remedies.

Comprehensive and authoritative, yet easy to understand and packed with advice that is easy to put into action, Storey's Guide to Feeding Horses is an essential reference horse owners will turn to time and again.

This book is wonderful. It explains what to feed, how to feed, where to feed and all the "why"s associated. It will make you want to know everything about what is in your horses feed and find the highest quality hay and pasture.

It is an invaluable resource for horse owners who have realized that trusting a feed company to supply complete nutrition is not always a wise decision. This book can give someone the tools to create their own feed mixture and save money while improving thier horses' health.

Perhaps if more horse owners were armed with this information, feed companies would be forced to supply costomers with better information about their products.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Great buy!.......2007-09-19

I recently ordered this book and was delighted when I opened it. I was a lot better than I thought it would be. It is color throughout, with specific detailed directions on how to create many specific types of flowers (begonia, several rose types, camellia, hollyhocks, poppy, geranium, delphinium, larkspur, nasturtium, petunia, iris, pansy, chrysanthemum, dahlia, carnation, & aster). All look quite realistic, except the pansy (too bad, its my favorite flower). It also describes how to put together many specific garden types, including a water effect. The water technique is quite a bit easier to do than some I've seen with model railroad techniques, but reasonably realistic. The book also details how to make several different garden furniture pieces, an added suprise I hadn't expected. Overall a great book with detailed color photos. Excellent!

I've always been intrigued by dollhouses and miniature furniture, but had never thought to provide a tiny garden to go with it. This is great for miniature enthusiasts.

A fantastic, helpful and well done book! Each item is carefully described and the directions are easy to follow. You won't believe how easy and inexpensive it is to make these gorgeous little creations. Inspiring! I have made several of the items portrayed in the book and I am amazed at how well they came out the very first time! I'm sure you will treasure this jewel as much as I do!

Can be used by the new miniaturist as well as the experienced. Good color photos and easy instructions using items found easily. Full sized patterns for some plans. Patterns and plans for the whole garden from walls to tools to vegetables to a patio chair. A truly enjoyable read. Can't wait to try the specific flowers listed in the book.

I loved this book! It describes in detail the eight designs featured as the cover states, but it also covers the elements of landscaping for a dollhouse. It gives instructions on how to create hedges and topiaries and has a few pages on how to create plants. With the beautiful color photographs and the detailed plans, I would suggest this book to miniaturists looking for landscaping inspiration.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2001-05-23

Don't let the name of the book fool you. The book only shows you how to make the specific designs of the various gardens in the book. The directions aren't entirely clear and you may get frustrated easily. The book does not show you how to make things like flowers, trees, and other various things you would think to find in a garden. Instead it tells you more about how to make things like the furniture, how to make realistic looking sidewalks, etc. If you want to make a more unusual outdoor setting that isn't flowery or traditional garden looking this is the book for you....

At last Lionel Barnard has written a book on how to build your own beautiful gardens in miniature. Step by step he guides you through the process, giving the reader the best feeling that you too can complete wonderful projects with ease. Everything you need to know is in this book ~ the tools and materials are all clearly spelled out for you, and the photography is excellent. Cleverly, Lionel has written this in "English and American" for those of us that live on one side of the world or the other ~ a handsome touch! I have been buying and building my own miniatures for years and now there is a book for folks like me written by an expert ~ well done Lionel Barnard. I heard at one of the shows that there will be another book by Lionel and his wife to be published in the next year or so.... I can't wait. Get this one ~ you'll love it!

This book deals mostly with miniature landscaping in an outdoor setting and is not very useful for landscaping a dollhouse. Many of the plants recommended are very difficult to find and require an outdoor location. Very few indoor plants are mentioned. It's a Great book for someone interested in outdoor gardening in miniature.

Have not had a chance to work any patterns from this book. Robyn Pandolph's fabric is pretty.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, beautiful projects.......2001-07-05

I had the pleasure of taking an applique workshop offered once a month for a year at my local quilt shop with Ms Pandolph. I enjoyed the workshop and Robyn and her designs. I bought this book after browsing a friends copy. I especially like having the patterns on the cd. I wasn't sure about it at first but after decorating one of my daughter's hats, a pair of overalls and one of my jumpers, by altering the size of the patterns, I was won over by the idea of having patterns on the computer.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys applique and Robyns lovely designs. And it is alot of fun playing with the designs in the different color schemes on the computer, so much easier than trying to figure them out in "real life"!!

I am a fan of Robyn's fabrics and I love her style. This book just radiates her soft touch. I so much enjoy going through the book. The patterns are so do-able and she suggests so many other uses for each pattern and idea. The CD-ROM is a great addition as you can print the patterns in the size you want and for the project you are working on. The CD also allows you to "try out" different fabrics and different looks for each pattern.

This is one of my favorites!

Here are some excerpts from my review of this book. You can see the complete review on the Quilter's Review website.

"...'Stitched With Love' includes clear how-to instructions and recipes. Not only do you see photos of quilts, you see these cute quilts in rooms showing the other projects included in this book. The beautiful double-page photos by Mark Packo make you think you are looking at a decorating magazine instead of a quilting book...."

"Robyn's easy applique patterns look real nice in her vintage fabrics, but I would like to make the quilts in bright colors for baby shower gifts. She anticipated this by including a nursery brights palette along with a country colors palette and a contemporary fabrics palette.

"There's also a teaching video on the CD-ROM, in which Robyn shows her method of needle-turn applique step by step. The best part of this video is that each step is a separate mini-video, making it easy to repeatedly watch just the pieces on which you need clarification...."

            4 out of 5 stars Stitched with Love: A Mother's Quilting Legacy - R Pandolph.......2001-01-06

This is a delightful book with lots of different design ideas for other applications included. You will perfect your applique skills doing these quilt designs. The only bad thing is that you MUST have a CD rom and a printer to retrive the patterns as they are NOT printed in the book itself.

                                Book Description

The third in Accord Publishing's irresistible Eyeball Animation® series of books takes us deep below the sea for a fish-eyed view of the ocean unlike any seen before.

A wild pair of eyeballs built into this high quality hardcover picture book bounce up and down and all around like a dinghy in rough waters. A glossary of the diverse sea life showcased throughout the story makes it a great teaching tool, as well!

William Boniface relays the tale of Max the Minnow in charming and witty verse that is as much of a treat for adults to read as for children to hear. Through his bold and colorful style, Don Sullivan's wildly humorous illustrations bring the underwater world of Max and his friends to vivid life.

I bought this book for my 2 grandsons, age 3 and 1, and they both love it. The book is a very well made board book for the little one and the moving "eyes" fascinate them both. I first saw the book in a doctor's office and laughed, I thought it was so funny. I wrote down the publisher and ordered it on-line with another companion book.

Our grandchildren ages 4 & 2 are coming to visit & this will be a fun book to read with them.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun and illustrations to die for.......2004-08-12

To start off, though, I have to say that you just can't read these books lying down in bed with your child. The eyes roll up (they're weighted) and all you get is the "whites" of the eyes.
Having said that, if you sit up with your kid and read, this is a great series of books to get into. I like to barely wiggle the book while reading so the eyes move about in silly ways.
The rhymes are great and engaging. The storyline is always cute. In this book in particular the storyline has a redeeming moral value to it.
Brightly illustrated, the drawings do a great job of illustrating the action in the story AND finding a way to deal with the backsides of the holes the eyes go through.
Cute, Clever, Witty, and Worth it.

The book was a good book it was about this minnow named Max. He was smaller then all the other fish and wanted to know how to get big. he asked everyone and he had one more person to ask. He went to the Shark's Place. ...
The age level is about 4-6.
The lesson i think is that even if your smaller then everything you can still be just as good as everyone else.
I really liked the lesson in this book and the wording...

                                5 out of 5 stars What a delight!.......2001-09-25

My parents bought this book for my two year old. Not only is it attention-getting with big bug eyes on every page, but the story is delightfully clever, interesting & educational. The back of the book even has a two page "encyclopedia" with pictures and descriptions of all the sea creatures introduced in the book. This is the first children's book that has kept my attention and interest as long as my son's. I highly recommend this book.

In The Fish's Eye: Essays about Angling and the Outdoors, Ian Frazier explores his lifelong passion for fishing, fish, and the acquatic world. He sees the angler's environment all around him-in New York's Grand Central Station, in the cement-lined pond of a city park, in a shimmering bonefish flat in the Flordia keys, in the trout streams of the Rocky Mountains. He marvels at the fishing in the turbid Ohio River by downtown Cincinatti, where a good bait for catfsh is half a White Castle french fry. The incidentals of the angling experience, the who and the where of it, interest him as much as what he catches and how. The essays (including the famous profile of master angler Jim Deren, late proprietor of New York's tackle store, the Angler's Roost) contain sharply focused observations of the American outdoors, a place filled with human alterations and detritus that somehow remains defiantly unruined. Frazier's simple love of the sport lifts him to straight -ahead angling description that are among the best contemporary writing on the subject. The Fish's Eye brings together twenty years of heartfelt, funny, and vivid essays on a timeless pursuit where so many mysteries, both human and natural, coincide.

                                5 out of 5 stars Tracker-Outdoors.com Review of The Fish's Eye.......2004-10-14

Author Ian Frazier's new book, "The Fish's Eye" is a wonderfully crafted collection of 17 short essays about fishing and the great outdoors. The essays bring to life all of the mysteries both human and natural that most anglers take for granted. Ian's writing techniques paint vivid pictures of the angler's surrounding whether its a bait shop, a bass lake or the Hudson River. "The Fish's Eye" captures the spirit of the angling life experience from every angle. This book is a "must read" for every angler and outdoorsman.

I am a big fan of Ian Frazier's writing, so I snapped this up even though I am not an angler. The material is uneven, "spotty": some good, some indifferent. It contains essays previously published in magazines like the New Yorker and Outside magazine. In fact, if you've read either of those often you will be disappointed to find relatively few new material.

If not however, the anglers will like some pieces, the Ian Frazier fans will like others but tire of the fish stories. The one that is most successful on both counts, in my opinion, is the one about the fellow who ran an angler's shop near Grand Central Station. It is more a personality piece than a fishing piece but combines both of Frazier's great abilities (writing that is funny and generous in spirit, and...of course...fishing).

I'm not sure that anyone's ever adequately explained the fact that fishing, baseball, boxing, golf, and horse racing have produced nearly every page of worthwhile sports writing. Baseball has more truly great writing
                                than the others--from songs and poems, like Take Me Out to the Ballgame and Casey at the Bat; to daily journalism, like Red Smith's Miracle at Coogan's Bluff; to essays, like John Updike's Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu;
to classic novels like Bang the Drum Slowly; to even great B-movies, like It Happens Every Spring--but fishing literature offers perhaps the most consistently high quality of writing (I don't think it has many songs,
poems, or movies and only a handful of worthwhile novels).

The great Red Smith of course excelled in writing about all of these sports and his fishing essays are marvelous. Robert Traver--perhaps best remembered now for Anatomy of a Murder, with its fishing-mad
attorney--wrote a number of great essays, collected in Trout Magic and Trout Madness. Nowadays, John Gierach seems incapable of putting pen to paper without producing an amusing fishing tale. All in all,
there's an embarrassment of riches to choose from. It seems not too much to say that you can grab nearly any collection of fishing essays and find writing of a high standard. In fact, it may be looking a gift horse in the
mouth, but there's so much good writing about fishing that it takes on a certain sameness--all those magnificent trout rising to the mayfly hatches in Montana and Idaho start to blend together at some point. So,
though it seem perverse, it takes more than "just" great writing to get at least this casual fan to grab a new fishing book. An author'd better have a well-barbed hook, to haul us in.

Ian Frazier's writing reputation precedes him--author of such well regarded books as On the Rez and Great Plains--but what's most appealing about this collection of his essays, mostly from The New Yorker and
Outside, is that many of them, especially the early ones, concern the fishing in and around Manhattan. Mr. Frazier takes this unlikely environs and lets us see that its just as fish-happy as any stretch of the Big
Blackfoot River. There are also some really lovely reminiscences of boyhood, including a charming essay about his Dad, who would become so disturbed by the notion of his son catching and hurting a fish that today it
is those occasions when he gets skunked that remind Mr. Frazier most clearly of his father. For my tastes the book loses a little steam when Mr. Frazier moves his family out West. Suddenly we're back in the
familiar--to me overfamiliar--waters of Montana. But such quibbles are more than forgiven because of a few quite humorous essays that are mixed in. One on eating bugs is quite good and one, called Bad Advice,
has an opening scene that's as funny as anything I've ever read anywhere. I hope I'll be forgiven for quoting at length :

Some years ago, on a camping trip in the pine woods of northern Michigan, my friend Don brought along a copy of an outdoor cookbook
that appeared on the best-seller lists at the time. This book contained many ingenious and easy-sounding recipes; one that Don especially
wanted to try was called "Breakfast in a Paper Bag." According to this recipe, you could take a small paper lunch sack, put strips of bacon
in the bottom, break an egg into the sack on top of the bacon, fold down the top of the sack, push a stick through the fold, hold the sack
over hot coals, and cook the bacon and egg in the sack in about ten minutes.

                                I watched as Don followed the directions exactly. Both he and I remarked that we would naturally have thought the sack would burn;
the recipe, however, declared, "grease will coat the bottom of the bag as it cooks." Somehow we both took this to mean that the grease,
counterintuitively, actually made the bag less likely to burn. Marveling at the "who would have guessed" magic of it, we picked a good spot
in the hot coals of our campfire, and Don held the sack above them. We watched. In a second and a half, the bag burst into leaping flames.
Don was yelling for help, waving the bag around trying to extinguish it, scattering egg yolk and smoldering strips of bacon and flaming paper
into the combustible pines while people at adjoining campfires stared in horror and wondered what they should do.

That's just good stuff and, by itself, makes the book worth reading.

                                4 out of 5 stars Fish tales....and other cornucopia.......2002-05-08

My father has been passionate about fishing for as long as I can remember. I never have been. I didn't have the patience and lets face it, if you're not catching fish, then you're standing there holding a stick dangling string into a monumental body of water. As I've gotten older (and wiser?), I try to fish with my father whenever possible and, preconceived notions aside, I'm really enjoying myself. Consequently, when I ran across Ian Frazier's new offering, THE FISH'S EYE, I immediately purchased a copy for both my father and myself (reading is a passion we share). I thought I might glean some insight into an experienced fisherman's psyche as I read this set of 17 essays and thus, a snapshot of my father's fishing experiences. The essays, written by Mr. Frazier over the last 20+ years and presented in chronological order, present the reader with Frazier's experiences in the fishing life....and his experiences have been wide and varied.

As an incredible admission, this reader had no clue that there were people who actually fished in New York City proper (it just didn't seem to fit) but Frazier sets this misnomer to rest in his first essay, "Anglers." Here, he describes his experiences of observing and listening to a few of those throwing their lines into one of six ponds in the City's park system near Harlem Meer.

One of the better and more detailed essays is "An Angler at Heart." This essay details the story of Jim Deren, the owner of Anglers Roost, in none other than New York City! Frazier tells of his many conversations with Deren as he frequents The Roost. This 47-page essay is actually several essays rolled into one, all featuring Deren and his experiences in the fishing life. At one point in the essay, Frazier spends nearly two full pages informing us of the different types of lures one would be confronted with when visiting Angler's Roost. In this reader's opinion, if there is one essay epitomizing the spirit of this book, it would be this particular one.

"Guiding Guys" is a hilarious spoof on fishing guide services. Frazier describes the "guarantees" one receives in the propaganda distributed by many of these services. In this essay, Frazier writes from the point of view of a guide making just such guarantees of outings ranging from great fishing to extremely great fishing. And, he provides the reader with several different guides to choose from. There's Craig, 6'7" and 275 lbs. who grunts and answers in one-word sentences; Potter, who will never stop nagging you the entire outing as to how badly you're doing; and, last but not least, former President Jimmy Carter. Now, you have to pay a little extra for Mr. Carter but its well worth it as the former President will regale you with tales of his Presidency as you sit around the campfire.

Perhaps the most poignant essay for me was "Fishing Without Dad." This essay is specifically dedicated to Frazier's memory of his father, who never liked to fish and moreover, thought it was cruel. This particular piece details Frazier's penchant for fishing while growing up but without the fatherly advice and companionship he seemed to yearn for. This is probably the most touching piece in the book.

The only downside to this collection of essays were those pieces that had absolutely nothing to do with fishing. This fit more into the life stories portion of the book. "In The Brain" has almost nothing to do with fishing but regales how Frazier tormented his brother (as brothers will do) on family vacations. "It's Hard To Eat Just One" describes Frazier's experiences with eating his bait, specifically bugs. In my opinion, these pieces (and a couple others) should have been modified or removed as they had very little if anything to do with fishing.

Frazier's penchant for spinning a story is outstanding. That said, anyone who loves fishing will enjoy THE FISH'S EYE; anyone who isn't a fisherman at heart will most likely find these tales slow and possibly boring.

5 out of 5 stars For sports lovers.......2002-04-14

This reviewer became a fan of the essay upon reading the classic "How to Cook Roast Pig". However, perusing seventeen pieces on fish, fishing, or related topics seem outside my lane as the only fish I catch is in a can. Still, Ian Frazier is a popular New Yorker essayist and many of his tales occur in and around the Big Apple. Thinking it's the sediment of the Hudson that makes the bagel taste good, I figured I could always shut down by the second contribution by explaining that the big one got away. However, instead I read all seventeen pieces in one sitting, as each contribution is intelligent, witty, and insightful. These tales are not just putting a worm on the hook in Central Park, but are human-interest segments that are often amusing but always insightful. Anglers will love this collection of Mr. Frazier's best New Yorker contributions, but so will anyone who relishes a different perspective through a fish's eye. PS, I still will catch my fish in a tin.

"The first of Luis H. Francia's books of non-fiction to be published in the United States, The Eye of the Fish paints a vivid and detailed portrait of the terror, beauty, and insistent humanity of the Philippines of today. Cross-cutting between Francia's recollections of the Philippines of his youth and accounts of his travels through the archipelago over the past two decades, The Eye of the Fish takes us the length of the nation: from Batanes in the north to the Muslim Jolo and Marawi regions of the south, and from the rugged mountain hideaways of revolutionary freedom fighters to the well-appointed salons of the political and cultural elite. Painters and priests, island shamans and small-town politicians, cultists, feminists, and infamous first ladies all make an appearance in this imaginative and idiosyncratic exploration of 'home.' Through their stories, and through his own memories of estrangement and acceptance in the Philippines and in the U.S., Francia reflects on the hybridity that is simultaneously the burden and the benediction of the PhilippinesUand of his own mestizo self."

I come from a similar background as the author, though a generation removed (younger). As I read it, I find that he has in fact written MY personal archipelago. This book is not contrived or pretentious. One of very few books I've found that relate the Philippines and Filipino identity issues so genuinely and honestly.

Francia is an amazing storyteller, this book is a must for anyone interested in personal/cultural identity. If you ever get a chance to hear this author read, do it- he is wonderful!

From the first word of this book I knew that this book was for me. Luis Francia's book is a must read for any Filipino-American looking to discover their Cultural Identity.

Luis takes his reader's on poetic journeys through the Philippine Archipelago, through these adventures we discover the many cultures of the Philippines and start to understand social and political issues that Filipinos face. Through his words you feel Luis' passion for a country he loves in the same way that you feel the passion through the words of Jose Rizal, Jorge Luis Borges, or Pablo Neruda.

It is not enough to say that I enjoyed this book. Luis' book is culturally significant. It meets the needs of Filipino's in their struggle to create a new cultural identity.
