Another winner.......2006-01-16
Equally as good as the show. Hard to put down!!!!!
Good continuation.......2005-10-12
Again, Lee Goldberg has done the deed. Written a book that you don't want to put down.
Second mystery just as charming, funny, and fun as the first.......2004-10-18
While on a reluctant vacation with his son Steve, Dr. Mark Sloan witnesses a new found friend die in a horrific shark attack. Or so everybody thinks. It turns out that the man was dead before the shark had him for lunch, so why was he murdered? The answer is a surprise, and how Dr. Sloan chases down the murderer makes for a satisfying mystery read. While The Silent Partner read more like a novelization of unused scripts for Diagnosis Murder, The Death Merchant reads like an actual novel. Even those unfamiliar with the show and its characters will enjoy it. Good stuff and highly recommended.
Entertainment on its best.......2004-09-05
I wish I could read the Diagnosis Murder novels once again as if it is the first time. Each novel is unique, has its own style, and is very easy to read, even if the reader hasn't heared about Diagnosis Murder before.
Mr. Goldberg knows perfectly how to facinate the reader, and how to lead him or her on the wrong way. It is really hard to put the novels aside before the end.
For those who know the show from TV, it is as if they are watching another episode.
Lee Goldberg has a loyal readership here in Germany, also in Switzerland and Austria, and we are very much looking forward for the next novels to come.
'The Death Merchant' - one of the most exciting books I ever read.
Just Like the TV Series!.......2004-09-05
This was an extremely enjoyable book/mystery to read. The pace was quick, and the writing was witty and involving. As a fan of the show, I could definitely imagine each of the characters saying their lines in this book. The descriptions of settings (i.e. Hawaii and Colorado) were a bit lacking, but the characters are what drive this story and keep you reading on and on. I found the book extremely reminiscent of the television series itself, and the personalities of the characters were exact - I could completely imagine each of them voicing the dialogue from the book. The mystery itself was well-developed and was just long enough to complete the story without any unnecessary writing. Even for those who never watched the Diagnosis Murder television series, this book will be enjoyable - the writing is lighthearted, yet purposeful, and the characters are interesting and unique. I am definitely interested in reading more from this series and hope it continues for some time. I have already recommended the book to some friends who enjoy lighter problem-solving books.

Better than Bertrem's Guide to the Age of Mortals.......2001-10-20
This book explored the War of Souls era, through the everyday peoples eyes. The front cover tells that it is the first volume of a series. That is of course not right. In fact there also were Bertrem's Guide to the Age of Mortals(which was terrible boring, to say the least), but this is much better.
What i think makes it better is that the book consists of journals written by different knights, or Qualinesti rebels, among other things, and in writing journals it makes the book much more interesting than Bertrem's Guide to the Age of Mortals.
It isn't a masterpiece. Some of the stories are very good, and some are still a little boring. John Grubber's part of the book was, after my opinion the most boring, while Jeff Crook's journal of a Qualinesti rebel was very well written and exciting.
It isn't one of the best Dragonlance books, but it is not bad, it is absolutely worth reading, if you love the War of Souls era.

Great Book.......2007-07-19
This is a wonderful book, especially for parents who are uncomfortable with things like this and don't know where to start. It's definately better read aloud with the child, at least the first time, so that they can ask questions.
scared my kid a little.......2007-07-07
My young school aged child was a little scared by this book, but the topic is important. I would still read it to her again (and will). Know your child, but your child NEEDS to know about this danger in a gentle way --- this book is a good place to start.
Appropriate .......2007-05-17
I had been looking for an age-appropriate book for my 2 1/2 year old twins on the subject of body awareness and molestation prevention. The problem was that most books either just talked about body parts, or were written for an older child (so they were scarey or just over their heads). This one really addresses those problems. It is a perfect introduction for preschoolers on the subject.
Good book for younger children.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter. It may be intended for younger children as it is quite basic. I was hoping that it would cover more information for her age group, but it was good book to purchase.
DISAPPOINTED!.......2007-01-16
I was disappointed in this book. This book states that it is for ages 4 thru 8. I bought this for my 7 year old. This book is more for ages 2 thru 4. I have a 4 year old so I read it to him and it is now his book. This book is way too vague for an older child about who and where you should and should not be touched. Surprisingly it talks more about how it is ok to tell mom or dad or someone you love when you don't feel like giving them an innocent hug or innocent kiss. The following is from 2 pages in the book.
'Sometimes you don't like to be touched. Sometimes you don't want a hug or kiss, even from someone you love. Then you can say, "No, not right now, please!" Or you can show you don't want to be touched by not hugging or kissing back, or by pulling away.'
That was 2 pages from the book. That is mainly what it discusses. I wanted more about the wrong kind of touching. It only briefly scanned over that in the book. This book is not worth the money, but the book was cheap enough that I took it as a loss rather than paying for shipping to send it back. Like I said before though, I would recommend this book for much younger kids that can't understand much more than simple explanations, but because of the age range it gave and the son I originally bought it for I would have to give this book 2 stars. For my younger child if this book had said ages 2 thru 4 I would have given it 3 stars, but that is all. Still too vague for me.

Good, but needs updated.......2007-01-14
I cannot believe I thought Folger's was good coffee for so many years. (Of course, it is made from 100% coffee.) If you're ready to enjoy a really good cup of coffee, The Perfect Cup is a good introduction to escaping from Maxwell House. I especially liked Mr Castle treating coffee like a crop, and discussing the variations in flavor that occur from variations in growing locations. I was prepared to dislike the 60 pages of interviews he had with the specialty coffee roasters, but found them to be informative (and occasionally quite entertaining).
The book desperately needs a second edition. This book was written as a general introduction to specialty coffee, and it probably still fits that niche. Specialty coffee has become even more popular than it was 15 years ago, though, and I believe coffee fans/addicts now know more about their beans and an expanded discussion would be merited. The Internet is an incredible resource for the coffee drinker and needs to be discussed in detail. And you can't ignore the 800-pound gorilla; I may buy my coffee from my local roaster, but Starbucks dominates the market and defines specialty coffee.
All-in-all, I enjoyed this book and it gave me some fresh perspective on my favorite non-alcoholic beverage.
Great for the novice or expert.......2006-07-29
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about that wonderful bean.
This is a good solid book on Coffee.......2003-08-26
I'm a coffee freak. I roast my own espresso and grind it with great care and pump it through a two group computer controlled professional Italian espresso machine. My wife thinks I'm obsessive about it. With that in mind, Perfect Cup provides a lot of excellent information that most people probably don't know, about how to make a great cup of coffee. It also talks about the characteristics of different kinds of coffee. If A&P 8:00 is your cup of tea...coffee, you might not give a damn, but if you really are curious...interested, passionate about coffee, you will probably enjoy reading this book.
Very helpful book.......2002-08-03
I highly recommend this book. I bought it as someone just getting into enjoying the coffee experience. I wanted a book that would help me learn more about brewing coffee, tasting, and what to expect from beans grown in the different areas of the world. It gave me the info. I was looking for. I also really enjoyed the section in which several coffee roasters across the US were interviewed about their roasting philosophies and what to them helped create that elusive perfect cup of coffee.
the perfect coffee book.......2000-12-03
years ago(before Starbucks bought the world) Boston had a local chain called the Coffee Connection. Their blends were perfect, their roasts were done by an old central american master and all of their employees were coffee lovers who could tell you details on any bean (once again, pre starbucks and the "we'll hire anyone" policy). I once asked how they knew so much and was told that employees were required to read this book. Somehow I lost my original copy ... so glad to see Amazon making it available again.

Customer Reviews:
Good for the Begining Collector Prices Can Cause Confusion........2004-11-12
I used this book in my first year of collecting and still do from time to time. I use it now mostly, to double check that an outfit is suppose to have this detail or that the correct stock number is on a box etc. In the beginning of my collecting years this book was like my "Chatty Bible". I will always recommend it to any new collector with a couple words of caution; prices are not in keeping with the fair market value and are often way undervalued and there are many variations out there not in this book. The values, while well intended, can and has led to confusion especially for the new collector. I think the word "Guide" is to be used loosely. There is no great book out on this topic that clearly depicts all the ins and outs of collecting of Chatty Cathys. This is especially true when it comes to the rarities and variations that are now uncovered. This book fell short when it came to warn this collector and many others, of the pitfalls and trickery out there used by unscrupulous sellers. However, for a small soft cover book it is great to show the basic types of Chatty Cathys and accessories. It stopped short of the authors' true potential. I believe it could have been far more comprehensive given the authors extensive knowledge and expertise.
I only recommend this book now because there is nothing else out there for the new collector except hours of web surfing to research and a few good dot com owners to help.
I also agree it is a "fun" book. I disagree with one reviewer about the condition of the dolls depicted. Many of the dolls are quite mint considering the type of doll and age. This was a doll that was toted everywhere and it's usability and appeal for children was quite high. I must add that the word "mint" is highly subjective.
All in all it's still a very good handbook or "guide" for the beginning collector as long as they know it's not a "Bible" or the last word on this topic. It is outdated yet still very useful. It's definitely worth having on your bookshelf or nightstand.
May be good for a new collector.......2002-07-11
The book did not address issues that I have found to be a common thread with serious collectors: rarities; care for the dolls; different dresses and what they originally came with, etc..
This may be good for a very new collector to get their feet wet in the Chatty collecting realm.
I did return the book to Amazon (thanks for the easy return).
Not a very good guide.......1999-09-29
I'm afraid that I must disagree with the people that say that the doll's in a collector's guide shouldn't have to be mint. In using a "guide" it should be one. Finding great dolls and toys and getting a superb picture should be the Number One priority. That way we know if the item we have is mint or not. The condition of the dolls and the photography in this book are deplorable if not an embarrasment to Mattel. For the dolls were great and to show them in this condition is terrible. One will find that the same dolls are found on different pages of the book, often times with different prices etc.
Informative; educational; good reference; entertaining........1999-09-18
I purchased the Don and Kathy Lewis book in 1994, and have used it many times over to answer my questions, look up outfits and doll variations. This was the first comprehensive Chatty Cathy doll book, and though others have been written, this one remains the most innovative and educational. No, the dolls are not all perfect, nor should they be expected to be; after all, they were intended for play, and most were.
Boring book.......1999-09-08
This is a boring book with 3rd rate pictures and 4th rate dolls. It is baffling that the reader from Hollywood and the "biggest chatty collector" could make such mis-informed statements about this book. It is rotten to the core!

Book Description
"Perhaps this autobiography will change the course of my life. This is something new for me. I have never before examined my life seriously." -from the autobiography of "Esther," nineteen years old, written in 1939
The candid and passionate writings in these autobiographies not only reveal the personal struggles, ambitions, and dreams of fifteen young Polish Jews in the 1930s, they also offer remarkable insight into the nature of ordinary Jewish life in Poland during the years between the world wars. Later authors often view this moment through lenses tinted by nostalgia or horror. But these young writers, unaware of the catastrophic future, tell their life stories with the urgency and fervor of adolescents, coming of age during a period of manifold new opportunities and challenges.
The autobiographies presented in the volume are selected from hundreds that were written for contests in the 1930s conducted by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, then based in Vilna. The words of the selected nine male and six female authors now speak across the chasm of history, providing unique testimony on Jewish life in the final years before the Holocaust.
