Excellent.......2006-02-25
After looking at Diagnosis Murder for many years on television, I wanted to read the first book written under the title, The Silent Partner. I found it to be a very interesting and entertaining. My daughter loves looking at the television shows and reading the first book published. We are looking forward in reading the rest of the books that I ordered. Keep up the good work. Love your books and T.V. shows, Dolly Tatum
An excellent start to the series of DM books.......2005-10-12
I found the beginning of the book quite chilling. Lee goldberg can really set a scene and he does it in a way that gets the reader to 'see' it with own eyes.
Solid entertainment in the DM tradition.......2005-01-21
Lee Goldberg's "The Silent Partner" is the debut novel based on the "Diagnosis Murder" TV series, which Goldberg produced, which means that a) the DM world is accurately drawn, b) Goldberg can put the characters into situations that the show couldn't, and c) there's a potential fan base who would buy the books.
Given all that, Goldberg still has to d) deliver a good story that'll keep the fans coming back, and he does that here. Dr. Mark Sloan's reputation for solving crimes lands him on a cold-case squad, but he learns that its only going to be used as a PR screen. Nevertheless, his curiosity gets him involved in what appears to be a solved murder, only to deduce that it's not.
"The Silent Partner" delivers an interesting story, letting you spend some time with familiar, likeable characters. Sloan and his friends and co-workers come across as idealized, but real characters. While they're all decent people, they get upset, make mistakes, and Dr. Sloan can be a real pain in the tuchus. In one scene, he's trying to prove that a bottle cap found at the scene of several murders is a vital clue, and you can understand the chief of police's point of view: "Uh huh, right, don't you have any house calls, doctor?"
It may be faint praise to call "The Silent Partner" a competent mystery that appears to have been dashed off, but it takes a lot of work and experience to make something look so effortless.
Every bit as entertaining as an episode of the show..........2004-10-02
Lee Goldberg was the perfect choice to write the first in what now appears to be a successful series of whodunnits inspired by the long running television show Diagnosis Murder, which starred Dick Van Dyke as Dr. Mark Sloan. Goldberg served as both writer and producer of the show for several years, so his ear for dialogue and the visual rhythm of the series is spot on. The Silent Partner offers the reader two mysteries, one involving a serial killer (and which provides the book's title), the other a patient death at Community General. Fans of the show will enjoy it and hopefully it will become a mystery section standard, like Murder, She Wrote.
A Good Start to this Book Series.......2004-09-19
This is the first book in the new line of Diagnosis Murder mysteries; it isn't as good as the second and third books are, but gives a great introduction to the series and the characters. If you watched the show it is easy to imagine each of the characters coming to life and to see the workings of Dr. Sloan as he solves yet another case. The humor from the series is here, as is the same light mystery. I read the first three books out of order and was very impressed by the second and third books too. I think this series has potential and hope to read many more.

Customer Reviews:
Certainly not the best I've read.......2004-02-10
Bruce Jones is one of the best writers in comics today. I would have said the best, but then I read this. The story is meant to be confusing, bouncing around through moments in time, and even Wolverine, the main character is confused. It's an interesting break from the usual slash first ask questions later story that Wolverine is usually featured in by other, less creative writers. Instead it is more character driven than any Wolverine story I've read in almost a decade. But it lasts way too long. This story was origionally printed in five issues, it could easily have been told in two, and more effectively.
buyer beware.......2003-12-19
Ok This book is really bad and I mean bad. Horrible art work and a soryline that will make you wish you were illiterate.

Book Description
After Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, she educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition — by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors and listening to her own body. In 2001, she marshaled everything she had learned as a “patient-expert” into the first edition of this book, which she has now completely updated and revised. The First Year®—Type 2 Diabetes uniquely guides you step-by-step through your first year with diabetes, walking you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of the crucial first year.
In clear, concise, accessible language, Becker covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with your diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including:
• Choosing the diet that is best for you
• The role of exercise
• Daily blood-glucose testing routines and understanding lab tests
• Medications and supplements
• Networking with others
• Insurance issues
• Traveling and socializing

At last some one who really talks to me.......2007-09-27
I have had type 2 diabetes since 1988. I have had several doctors and diabetes experts. I have been to Diabetic Educators and clinics. I did not feel bad and had never known a person in the family with diabetes so I just did as the doctor said and took my pill every day and saw my condition get worse over the years. Little did I know that the doctor was expecting that. I had no idea that there were things that I could do to prevent complications.
This book explains the things that the doctors do not have time to explain. This covers the things that the Educators - who are mostly not diabetics - forget to tell you. The big difference is that Gretchen has diabetes and is using her considerable skill to teach the reader what she and many others are doing to delay the damage that high blood sugars do to your body.
Get it; read it daily. When you wear it out, buy another. It is the best thing you can do for yourself. You are in a war and you just don't know it. Sign up for her blog and David Mendosa's web site.
A Great Starting Place for Type 2 Folks.......2007-08-28
Many of the reviews written here diss this book for not covering this or that, especially the emotional rollercoaster that can attend this or any other lifestyle changing condition. The "negatives" can also be interpretted as "matter-of-fact". She does not talk about how to get rid of the condition, but neither does she bring false hope that all of us who are type 2 diabetics can somehow be cured. It's true that some can control the condition with diet and that some who lose enough weight and are careful can reverse the diagnosis. It's not the norm, however. Most will live with diabetes and all of its possibilities, some controlling their levels with diet and pills, some with diet and insulin injections. Some will never be able to control it; some will not be willing to try. The author is not trying to bring doom and gloom or to touch every single variation on the theme. It is a refreshing dose of reality in fairly concise language.
The two most important statements in the book are that I am in charge of my health care and that if I am a smoker, one of the simplest and best ways to help my treatment is to stop smoking. Taking charge of my health care made a monumental change in the level of attention that I received from my physicians and the quality of information that I received. I was suddenly treated with much more respect, and as more of a participant rather than a mere receiver of instructions to be blindly followed. My appointments changed from 8 minute data sessions to 30-45 minute discussions of how things worked and what could be tweaked to make things work better. Very important change in relationship with my main doc; it was good before, but now is great!
Also remember that this is an INTRODUCTION to this condition, not the be-all and end-all of information. It helps the reader to formulate good questions to bring to their physicians and other members of their health-care team--questions that might otherwise go unasked and thus unanswered. Most of us are not well enough informed about this or any other subject when we first start learning about it.
I've purchased three of these and given two of them away to newly diagnosed folks who have thanked me profusely for the great info that they've received and the hope that this book brings. It is a reality check that shares both benefits from good self-care and dangers from ignorance and neglect with this thing called type 2 diabetes. Lots of folks saw the horror stories, some folks saw the offer of light at the end of the tunnel. Look for the light. It's in there!
It's a great help.......2007-08-23
This book was so helpful in filling in all the gaps (there were many) in my doctor's explanations/instructions for me, a newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic. The author offers a straightforward primer on diabetes - what is it? This includes good technical explanations of the disease. How does it work? It discusses the possible effects of diabetes poorly controlled. What can you do to live with it? It discusses the benefits of weight loss, diets and exercise, not by just saying its good for you; but giving a technical explanation why these activities actually modify the way your body responds in the face of diabetes. I was very satisfied with this book and am so happy that when I went onto Amazon to look for Bernstein's book (recommended by my doctor), Amazon recommended Dr. Becker's book in addition. So far, it has been the best resource to help me cope with this new disease.
Best book for newly diagnosed diabetics.......2007-08-22
Back when I first heard the word diabetes spoken to me by a doctor, indicating that it was a condition I was suffering, I remember picking up "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed" and devouring it in a matter of a couple of days.
Today, it's been 5 years since I was diagnosed. I have type 1 diabetes (not type 2) and I am a pump user since 2005 as well, but the teachings and references on how to deal with diabetes at large still hold true and are just as valuable.
I recommend this book to anyone who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes as a must-have reference to get through the early stages of this condition.
Depressing.......2007-08-04
I am recently diagnosed with Type 2 and this was the 10th book I read on the subject...and the only one that was depressing in tone. The author herself admits in her forward that she has issues with food and it shows - she talks a lot about never eating her favorite things again, which is not the case as long as it's done in moderation. I was handling things well until I read this book, then hit a downward spiral for 3 weeks afterward. The info in this book is presented in other books like Diabetes for Dummies and Everything You Need to Know About Type 2 Diabetes without the bummer!
Book Description
Remember your first Jell-O shotand how naughty it felt to add booze to Bill Cosby's favorite food group? Well times have changed, and so have those wiggly, jiggly shots you used to slam back with glee. All the rage with the postcollege party set, today's gelatin shots are still cool and fruity, but with a hip and sophisticated edge that sets them miles apart from those plain old liquid drinks. In JIGGELO, you'll find a wealth of info on the history of gelatin shots, the practical how-tos of making them, and enough recipes to keep you and your friends slurping for hours. And you don't have to be a professional bartender to whip up a batch of these shots: there aren't a lot of rules or mathematical laws involved, just room for creativity and mistakes you can consume. So remember: You don't sip it, you chew it; you don't drink it, you do it!

Jiggle-icious!.......2005-09-22
As a college graduate, I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying many "gelatin shots" throughout my undergraduate career. I thought my friends and I were fairly inventive but this book shows us for the frauds we were!
If you are even thinking of hosting a party or just want something fun to do with a couple of friends at a small get-together, this book is a must!
My personal favorites are the "Alliteration" and the "Twister".
Seriously, they thought of just about everything for this book and even if you don't like every ingredient, it will give you the incentive to mix and match ideas to make your own crazy concoctions!
Just freakin' buy it.
Gelatin Shots for the serious shotmaster.......2005-01-03
Gelatin shots have moved beyond the college campuses and into the home of creative partygivers. Now, three friends who enjoy the creative end of gelatin have complied a book of some pretty interesting flavors.
"Jiggelo" includes a glossary of gelatin shot terms, a timeline of the combination of gelatin and alcohol, and some tips for serving. But mostly, this book is about creating incredible flavors. Each of the over 4 dozen recipes have either a quick intro explaining where in your everyday life the particular shot is perfect for or a fun fact about the name of the shot or one of the ingredients. "Twister", for example, points out that it has been a very popular word over the years, used for everything from a popular party game to a line of fruit drinks to a hit movie starring Helen Hunt, interspersed with the facts about the number of tornadoes that hit the U.S. in each particular year those events happened (in this case, 1966, 1988, and 1996 respectively). And the shot itself, consisting of strawberry gelatin, water, vodka, peach schnapps, and Midori, sounds like it could indeed be quite a twister.
The shots are actually quite original in many cases, such as the ISO Happy Endings (wild strawberry gelatin, water, champagne, crème de strawberry, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream), the Spice Spice Baby (black cherry gelatin, flat cola, spiced rum, and grenadine) and the not-quite-gelatin shot Brulette (milk, unflavored gelatin, vanilla schnapps, vanilla vodka, frangelico, instant vanilla pudding, and brown sugar).
If you take your gelatin shots seriously, then "Jiggelo" and its wildly inventive flavor combinations is the book for you. It is destined to be your bar manual for years to come.
Amazing!.......2004-06-06
Jiggelo plays on the fact that gelatin shots were once a staple only for college student. As a student, I must say this book is wonderful, especially for college students. My next party will most definately jiggelo oriented. Way to go Mary!
One impressed imbiber.......2004-05-27
If you have ever considered serving Jello Shots, this book is a must have! It has clearly written recipes with fun facts and great illustrations about the history of the Jello Shot. When you are searching for a creative theme for the upcoming party, you need look no further than this book.
Imbiber?.......2004-05-21
Once I learned what an Imbiber is - I realized I needed this book.
Finally, "Gello" shots have moved out of the dorms and into the mainstream. I'll admit, a few recipes should only be made on a dare, (Ever Clear and fruit flavored gelatin make for really bad mornings) but most of the concoctions are very good.
And come on, this is Utah - what meal is complete without Gelatin...
And come on, this is Utah - how can you get through a meal without Imbibing!

Book Description
Frederick Douglass was unquestionably the foremost black American of the nineteenth century. The extraordinary life of this former slave turned abolitionist orator, newspaper editor, social reformer, race leader, and Republican party advocate has inspired many biographies over the years. This, however, is the first full-scale study of the origins, contours, development, and significance of Douglass's thought.
Brilliant and to a large degree self-taught, Douglass personified intellectual activism; he possessed a sincere concern for the uses and consequences of ideas. Both his people's struggle for liberation and his individual experiences, which he envisioned as symbolizing that struggle, provided the basis and structure for his intellectual maturation. As a representative American, he internalized and, thus, reflected major currents in the contemporary American mind. As a representative Afro-American, he revealed in his thinking the deep-seated influence of race on Euro-American, Afro-American, or, broadly conceived, American consciousness. He sought to resolve in his thinking the dynamic tension between his identities as a black and as an American.
Martin assesses not only how Douglass dealt with this enduring conflict, but also the extent of his success. An inveterate belief in a universal and egalitarian humanism unified Douglass's thought. This grand organizing principle reflected his intellectual roots in the three major traditions of mid-nineteenth-century American thought: Protestant Christianity, the Enlightenment, and romanticism. Together, these influences buttressed his characteristic optimism.
Although nineteenth-century Afro-American intellectual history derived its central premises and outlook from concurrent American intellectual history, it offered a searching critique of the latter and its ramifications. How to square America's rhetoric of freedom, equality, and justice with the reality of slavery and racial prejudice was the difficulty that confronted such Afro-American thinkers as Douglass.

So many answers . . ........2001-06-08
I've heard Frederick Douglass' name for years, all throughout history classes, but never had a really good idea of what he contributed to history. Ms. Weidt has done an excellent job of weaving pertinent facts about this hero's life into an intriguing narrative. Interesting for both children and adults, this book does much to evoke the strong-minded, highly-principled person who inspired so many others to follow his example. I highly recommend this book.
