Book Description

It was a wedding no one would forget…

Luke Skywalker was juggling martini glasses. Albert Einstein was dirty-dancing with Monica Lewinsky. And Zorro was arguing with Death himself. For wedding planner Carnegie Kincaid, it was just another night on the job: a coed bachelor party thrown by one of Seattle’s hippest couples--the bride-to-be a hard-charging Microsoft millionaire, the groom a Seattle Sentinel news editor.

But what started as the perfect evening for the young, handsome, and politically correct ended in disaster. One beautiful bridesmaid was dead, and another had thrown herself into Elliott Bay. Now Carnegie has more than a cutting-edge wedding to save. All around her, secret liaisons are unraveling, dangerous decisions are coming to light, and at least one criminal is lurking. With families to please, dresses to hem, and headlines to grab, Carnegie is discovering the dark side of love and marriage amid high and low Seattle society--and that while some passions may be forever, some are a motive for murder....

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun in rainy Seattle.......2007-06-14

Donnelly has a way of plopping you right down in Seattle and surrounding you with lots of matrimonial hijinks...There are a couple of fun locations in this one, too: the aquarium and the Experience Music Project. The cast of characters is colorful and well-drawn, and best of all, she totally fooled me with the identity of the murderer. The only other book I've read by Donnelly is May the Best Man Die (Dell Mystery) and I heartily recommend you read it as well (it comes after this one chronologically).

4 out of 5 stars Great beach read -- probably 4 1/2 stars.......2004-09-21

This is an enjoyable read -- well plotted, well written, and with a likeable main character (Carnegie Kincaid, wedding planner). I guess the only reason I stopped short of giving it five stars is that it wasn't so compelling that I stayed up long past my bedtime trying to find out what happens next. This is my second book in the series, and I intend to follow along with Carnegie's life with this series.

The plot involves a murder that takes place at an upscale Halloween party -- the kind where people are wearing costumes that are professionally made (I've always wanted to go to a Halloween party like that). Carnegie is the wedding planner for the hostess and this gala is part of the pre-wedding festivities. Unfortunately, the victim is one of the bridesmaids, and another of the bridesmaids has to be hauled out of the water (this is set in Seattle where there's water of some kind every ten feet or so). Carnegie ends up trying to find the killer before he -- or she -- strikes again. But with everyone running around that party in costume, it's going to be difficult.

All in all, a great book to pack for vacation.

5 out of 5 stars Summer Fun.......2004-07-08

I don't usually write reviews on the books I read. Died to Match is part of Deborah Donnelly's Wedding Planner Series. It was just such a fun, summer read. It was light, and funny and just the right length! Her characters make this book! I can't wait to read her next!

5 out of 5 stars Wedding Series Just Gets Better.......2004-03-14

This is the second book in the Carnegie Kincaid wedding planner mystery series and Deborah Donnelly just keeps getting better. I have to confess that although Carnegie Kincaid (6' and a redhead) looks nothing like J Lo - I can still see Jennifer Lopez as the Wedding Planner in this characterization.

Deborah Donnelly does a GREAT job with introducing very off-beat weddings and parties in this series AS WELL AS the various problems that her wedding planner encounters. I think that it would be very easy to resort to trite, old wedding disasters - but Donnelly manages to avoid this.

Other reviewers have mentioned that the novels were too long or characters weren't developed enough. Good grief. The plots are DEVELOPED and the characters' personalities are being revealed a little at a time as this is a series. With each book, another layer of the characters' personaes are exposed.

Keep it up Donnelly - this series is great!

5 out of 5 stars An All Around Fun Whodunit.......2003-07-28

I picked up this book as a lark and after the first few pages I was hooked. Carnegie Kincaid is like a grown-up Nancy Drew. This book was funny, entertaining, and had me anxiously awaiting Donnelly's next release.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Hugh Cook.......2006-01-03

"The Wordsmiths and the Warguild" begins with the classic scenario of a father forcing an innocent child into an unwanted marriage. Slerma, daughter of the King of Sung, is betrothed to Togura, son of a wealthy and powerful baron. The twist is that it's Togura who's desperate to escape the marriage, as the princess is monstrously fat and ugly, as well as obscene and agressive. Going on the lam, Togura manages to land what looks liek a cushy position as monster-slayer for the wordsmiths, but more unfortunate events unfold and Togura is on the run across the continent.

One might view most of the story elements in this book as classis fantasy. Hugh Cook sets himself apart in two ways. First, he has attitude. "The Wordsmiths and the Warguild" is ribald, funny, gleefully offensive and at times almost abusive to its hero, who just can't catch a break. Moreover, Cook has inverted the standard fantasy hero. Togura is neither particularly strong nor smart nor brave. When danger emerges, he screams and runs away if he can. Even his loyalty to his true love wavers at times. In a strange way, though, these flaws make him more likable than standard fantasy drones, and you'll be cheering for him all the louder by the end of the book.

Adding to the flavor of the book is a surprising attachment to grit and realism. These qualities seem largely to have been abandoned by most of today's fantasy authors. Hugh Cook evidently did his homework; "The Wordsmiths and the Warguild" keenly brings up a number of the harsher realities of mideival life, such as:

      1. There was not always a road or trail leading from point A to point B. Even when there is a trail it could be overgrown, or washed away by bad weather. Travel was extremely difficult and often dangerous.

      2. Sickness and injury. There was no hospitals during the Middle Ages, no doctors, and few medicines. Plagues and epidemics were common. If you were ill or hurt, you might well simply be abandoned to die. If you did manage to survive, recoveries were generally long and painful.

      3. Food. Ever find it amazing that some fantasy heroes can carry enough food for a six-month quest? In "The Wordsmiths and the Warguild", food is often scarce. You cannot simply go into the woods and hunt or gather up dinner. Cook is brutally honest about the effects of starvation, and that, in fact, makes some of the book's most effective scenes.

      4. Sex. Yes, sex exists in this book. Togura goes through as much sexual embarrassment as any teenage male, as he stumbles through several awkward moments.

No one will ever accuse Hugh Cook of literary brilliance. But despite his undeniable pulp qualities, "The Wordsmiths and the Warguild" is readable, entertaining and at times strangely compelling. Hugh Cook stands out for his observation that the mideival world was harsh, cruel, and frequently very painful. He is obviously driving at a belief that most of the human race is selfish and small-minded. But (with one unfortunate exception) he never delves into political lectures or monologing. Thus I give this book a whole-hearted recommendation. If you're getting tired of the piles and bland and syrupy drivel on bookstore shelves (and I'm not pointing any fingers, but two authors with first name 'Terry' are surfacing in my mind), this might be just the cure for what ails you.

2 out of 5 stars Smug, crass, but original subversion of perspective.......2003-06-30

Smug, pompous, overly pleased with himself for using 'flatulence' instead of 'fart' type language. Poor start. Somewhat farcical fantasy, broad, frequently undergraduate humour (think Black Adder for the coarseness and vocabulary, but without the wit). Almost no attempt to make different races, tribes, lands cohere - protagonist just wanders about bumping into barely two dimensional characters and settings.

But ... nice, relatively original broad approach, in two ways.

      1) The hero just gets buffeted about, little or no control, and definitely little help from the author to propel him onto steadily greater conquests; indeed, he often has no idea what's going on;

      2) I didn?t actually realise I'd read the first book in the series (The Wizards and the Warlords) until more than half way in. The only way this book integrates is that instead of it being from the view of people making wars and changing events, it's from the view of someone just bowled along beside and in them, generally with no idea what's going on. Eventually you realise the events are the ones you read about in book one, but you, like the central character, also have no idea and are just getting through trying to survive. One chapter foregrounds this, the narrator saying that, were the protagonist more articulate, in addressing the role of the individual in history he?d state:
'History is what we understand. The rest is a waking nightmare. History is the explanation of who holds the knife. Without that explanation, all we understand is the pain.'

I remember being annoyed at the beginning of the first book at the way Cook blithely has a 3000 year old wizard die because he does some stupid things - that anyone who'd survived for a fraction of that time would have the nous not to do. But he's all about demystifying heroes, saying they do do stupid things at times.

He gets better once he gets into a book. His strengths are escaping the formula success story plots, and rare things like the last quote have some profundity, particularly in the context. In 'A Game of Thrones' George R.R. Martin was likewise willing to let his heroes unexpectedly suffer or even die, but he also built a grand, unified mythology/realm with some cohesive history (as opposed to random ideas), and created some decent characters.

      5 out of 5 stars I can't rate this high enough.......2000-07-15

I originally came across this book in a library sale for 25 cents, and I was bored and wasn't expecting much when i Started reading, but it is definitely THE best book I have ever read in my life, and I've read every Feist, Tolkien, and Jordan book. I read it in 3 days, and it was so good that I didn't put it down except to eat and sleep, and I didn't sleep much. I really liked how the hero doesn't always win and can be humiliated and unlucky like anyone else. I especially like the parts where it seems like he is going to go crazy and how his hallucinations are described. I was very surprised that this wasn't a best seller; it must have been overlooked or something, and that is a shame, because one of the best writers in the world isnt even on the top 10, while books like Harry Potter and the Magic Pot or something are selling millions of copies. I HIGHLY recommend this book. You'll be glad you got it.

5 out of 5 stars gritty fantasy romp that adds to the cumulative saga.......1998-07-07

cook has tried and in fact done well to write 10!! books that are all set in a post apocalyptic world. He pits magic against good old fashioned bloodthirsty gore and AT LAST some bad luck that people in such circumstances would be delt. It's quite refreshing to see a hero slapped down often in a humiliating and realistic way. Sometimes gritty, funny, grotesque he tries to cover a small period of time ?? 30 years, in world, from 10 different peoples viewpoints. Some of the cameo appearances of previous "stars" of other books , seen from the new hero's perspective is nicely done. On the whole a couple of novels stand out on their own a bit and are not that integral, but at 10 books if you like it, there's loads of it.......................Highly Recommended "The Walrus and the Warwolf" ... enjoy

ps. hugh cook... if your out there email me please..are a medical man ?. You certainly describe, with relish, many of the more unpleasant medical afflictions out there..

Personally, I consider this graphic novel to be the best thing to come out of Marvel Comics in the modern era. It is a morality play- and a very good one.

The action takes place in Christ's Crown, a sleepy midwestern town. It is here that Blackheart, son of Mephisto, heir to the throne of hell is reborn on our plane. It is also here that he decides to both depose, and surpass, his father. His strategy is to tempt and corrupt the new breed of hero- those that walk the razor's edge between Light and Darkness in the service of justice.

To do this he summons Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and Punisher to town. He does this with notes that promise them secret information on what they desire most. Unfortunately, for him, he has misjudged the men that he has summoned. When they all automatically reject his offer of unlimited power in the service of Darkness, Blackheart then resorts to corrupting the entire town to use against them. Here he makes one fatal mistake when abducts the one innocent, uncorrupted soul in town- and spills her blood while doing so. The heroes fight their way into the heart of Hell itself to rescue the little girl....

As Ghost Rider states in the story: It doesn't matter if there is an edge, or if we occasinally cross it. As long as the innocent are protected, our cause is just.

The 1991 edition is printed on first class paper in brilliant color. There is an excellent four-panel folding dioramic cover.

5 out of 5 stars Tempted by the devil..........2001-04-09

Three of marvel's darkest heros are tempted by Mephisto's son. The deal: the power to win all of their battles and the answers to the secrets they obsess over if only they cross the line. Oh, and by the way they'll get the chance to kill Mephisto himself.

I own a few other books in the Retro cookbook collection, and this one goes along the same format. I bought it hoping to find a few fifties cocktail recipes, and wasn't disappointed...and of course, keep in mind that what passed for sophistication fifty years ago was VERY different when it came to party food!

1 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting........2006-12-23

I guess if you don't have a clue what retro style is and want someone to patronise you about it this book would be perfect. I hated the tone of this book - words like 'cool' and 'classy' abound; the ideas are frankly, naff, and its general tips (such as 'Cheese: Especially something nice') were unhelpful to say the least. The Retro Fiesta book is slightly better.

              Book Description

ETERNAL TREBLINKA: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust, by Charles Patterson, Ph.D., describes disturbing parallels between how the Nazis treated their victims and how modern society treats animals. The title is taken from the Yiddish writer and Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer, himself a vegetarian: "In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for the animals it is an eternal Treblinka."

The first part of the book describes the emergence of humans as the master species and their domination of the rest of the inhabitants of the earth. The second part examines the industrialization of slaughter (of both animals and humans) that took place in modern times, while the last part of the book profiles Jewish and German animal advocates on both sides of the Holocaust.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling read, although I find comparison to the holocaust trivializes it.......2007-09-01

author of Cooking Jewish: 532 Great Recipes from the Rabinowitz Family

from the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles
              April 5, 2002

In the forward to "Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust," animal rights activist and daughter of Holocaust survivors, Lucy Rosen Kaplan, states: "I came to understand that the oppression of nonhumans on this Earth eclipses even the ordeal survived by my parents."

Whether the comparison between the extermination of the Jews and our daily slaughter of millions of "food" animals evokes agreement or outrage, you will want to read this meticulously researched and compelling treatment of a painful and controversial subject. Charles Patterson, author of "Anti-Semitism: The Road to the Holocaust and Beyond," elaborates in "Eternal Treblinka" how American slaughterhouses became a model for the gas chambers of Nazi Germany and submits that the killing of animals for food, sport and research is no less an atrocity, a view that is sure to offend some.

The book takes its title from the Isaac Bashevis Singer story, "The Letter Writer," in which a Holocaust survivor speaks a poignant eulogy for a mouse he had befriended. "In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for the animals it is an eternal Treblinka."

At its best, the book painstakingly reveals how the mindset that some humans are animals justified slavery, the subjugation of women, the annihilation of the Native American population, the eugenics movement and finally the Holocaust itself.

By "domesticating" animals and assuming "dominion" over them, Patterson says, we desensitized ourselves to their suffering because they are "just animals." It was then an easy progression to regard some human beings as more valuable than others. "Thus, with animals already defined as `lower life' fated for exploitation and slaughter, the designation of `lesser' humans as animals paved the way for their subjugation and destruction."

The book is filled with sordid revelations about well-known icons. L. Frank Baum, who delighted the world with "The Wizard of Oz," was a staunch advocate for the extermination of Native Americans, as was William Dean Howells and Harvard professor Oliver Wendell Holmes (father of the Supreme Court justice).

Henry Ford was a virulent anti-Semite whose "The International Jew" sold 500,000 copies in the United States and was reprinted six times in Germany. Hitler kept a life-size portrait of Ford in his office, praised him in "Mein Kampf" and was quoted in the Detroit News as saying: "I regard Henry Ford as my inspiration." Patterson points out that Ford modeled his assembly line after the American slaughterhouses, a concept not lost on his admirer, Hitler.

In a chapter chillingly titled "Improving the Herd, From Animal Breeding to Genocide," Patterson traces the American eugenics movement, which applied the principles of animal husbandry -- "breeding the most desirable, and castrating and killing the rest" -- to the sterilization of criminals, the "feeble" and mentally ill, a handy paradigm for the "racial cleansing" of the emerging Third Reich. "The progression from sterilization to extermination has been a logical one for the Nazis."

Patterson notes that long before Hitler came to power, Jews had been vilified as animals. "Calling people animals is always an ominous sign because it sets them up for humiliation, exploitation and murder." Like animals, Jews were "herded" into crowded cattle cars, transported long distances without food or water, tattooed and "selected" for extermination and led through tubes to the "killing floor."

If Jews are rats, one need feel no guilt in degrading and exterminating them. If Jews are pigs, then the crematoria were mere "processing plants." Patterson quotes the artist Judy Chicago, who wonders "about the ethical distinction between processing pigs and doing the same thing to people defined as pigs."

Many would argue that to compare Nazi genocide to the slaughterhouse is to trivialize the Holocaust. I, for one, was appalled. To buttress his case, Patterson provides numerous "testimonials" from Holocaust survivors and their families as well as from Germans who became animal activists because of their experience, not in spite of it. While the stories are compelling, here Patterson is preaching to the choir.

The events of Sept. 11 and the continuing suicide bombings in Israel demonstrate that there are individuals today who do not value the sanctity of even their own lives, much less that of other humans. Patterson may experience difficulty, therefore, in convincing a nation of mindless hamburger eaters, now focused on survival, to turn its energies to the plight of the cow.

And yet, perhaps an extreme view must be taken to get attention.

In the book, animal activist Christa Blanke, a former Lutheran pastor, notes that "130 years ago, the church remained silent about the slave trade because they were only black people. Fifty years ago, the church remained silent because they were only Jews. Today, the church remains silent because they are only animals."

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone interested in living an ethical life........2007-08-17

The author was brave enough to write this book. We ought to be brave enough to read it! I am a yoga teacher with a vast collection of books on health, yoga, spirituality and the humane treatment of animals. The practice of yoga is rooted in the principle of "ahimsa," nonviolence and reverence for all life. For yoga practitioners, for anyone seriously interested in living an ethical life, "Eternal Treblinka" is essential reading. Even if you have already read other classics in the field like "Slaughterhouse" by Gail Eisnitz and "Dominion" by Matthew Scully and the great works by Peter Singer and others, this book will illuminate and expand your consciousness.

--Suza Francina, vegan yoga teacher, author, "The New Yoga for People Over 50," "The New Yoga for Healthy Aging" and other books, former mayor, Ojai, California.

5 out of 5 stars I wanted to take this book apart from the very beginning..........2006-08-17

A vegan roomie lent me this book, and I was reluctant to read it, but decided I would, just so that I could have the pleasure of finding the fallacies in it and have something to argue with her about.

Contrary to what another reviewer has written, this book does not EQUATE the suffering of animals with the Holocaust. It COMPARES them. Man is not a mere animal, and there is no "equality" there to speak of, and anyone who insists there is, or that there SHOULD be is just not someone that you can respect for their intelligence or ability to differentiate. But then the whole concept OF "equality" has been so hacked to death by politicization and greedy agendas over the years, it really is devoid of any meaning now.

What make this book amazing are the historical and anthropological aspects of the arguments it makes. The proposition that man has learned the qualities that are necessary to brutalize man using the necessary subjugation of animals as a model, over time, and as man transitioned from hunter-gatherer to agrarian societies is one that must not be dismissed, and should be taught to children. It had never occurred to me, and a big light went on when I realized the implications of this, from a sociological and psychological perspective.

I was VERY skeptical, but this IS a rational and compelling book, it makes sense, it isn't a whacky leftist tree-hugging PC work at all. If that's all people get out of it, well, that betrays their own childish and narrow polarizations. This book is so much more. It gives key insights into what we are as human beings, and what it is that we are actually DOING to ourselves. Really, it shows you how things are hooked together in the human psyche, what we have been, where we've gone, and where it is we may end-up.

It's disturbing too. Very. But not gratuitously so in any way. The author is morally and rationally compelled to inform and educate, and he does this with surprising clarity and tact, never coming off as preachy or judgmental, just very passionate and urgent and calm. I found myself respecting his more radical choices and frankly, forever changed. It changed me. To the core.

Give it a try, it's extremely interesting and informative at the least; at the most it is a call to change and question and transcend the past into a better, more HUMANE future.

5 out of 5 stars Sickening Death Factories.......2006-06-14

There are no more excuses; there is no more room for rationalization if we are to claim "honesty" and "compassion" for our species. The factory farming and slaughter of animals for "food" and other human purposes is a sickness of the soul and it is time to change in favor of logic and compassion. This brilliant book exposes the hypocrisies of being a meat-eater in this day and age and challenges us to admit the truth and to change for the better. If we don't open our minds and our hearts to the truth and instead get angry at the messenger, we only validate the worst fears for our species.

5 out of 5 stars Please read this riveting book and pass it on!.......2006-02-07

"Eternal Treblinka" is a very sobering read. It should be required reading in all high schools and available in all libraries. Charles Patterson's excellent book offers a riveting comparison between our historical and continuing insensitive treatment of animals and the horrific treatment of Jews in the Holocaust.

Part I succinctly lays out important historical information about the influence that the domestication of animals has had on our society and the subsequent devastating impact which that has had, and continues to have, on all concerned: the animals themselves, the humans who feed upon the animals and, last but certainly not least, the entire planet itself.

Part II points out the frightening parallels in the practices and rationalizations utilized in the daily slaughtering of millions of animals in the United States and the slaughtering of millions of Jews and other innocents at the hands of the Germans in the Holocaust. I lack the words to describe the effectiveness of that comparison.

Part III then introduces us to people both Jewish and German whose experiences relating to the Holocaust led them to become advocates on behalf of the animals with the goal of bringing a cessation of animal exploitation in all its many forms. This leaves the reader with a glimmer of hope. But time is running out rapidly and unless our continuing support of this culture of violence against helpless, sentient animals ceases, we as a society, and, indeed, the planet itself are on a crash course with irreversible disaster.

Please read this book and then pass it on. The urgency of its message cannot be over-stressed.

Firstly, it is a wonderful photography book. The large color Photos feature women from the many ethnic groups within Nepal, decked out in the most gorgous jewelry! Much attention is given to the jewelry of the Tibetan groups. The text is informative and easy to read. After a long day at the office, I can open this book and be magically transported to an exotic place. If you enjoy learning about Himalayan art and culture, this book is for you!

Creating the perfect kitchen is like cooking a special meal: you have to pore through the recipes, consider the ingredients, and imagine how everything will finally come together. And that’s exactly what House Beautiful’s new guide allows home decorators to do. First, the “Design” section helps you identify your style, decide on an effective layout, figure out infrastructure (lighting, electrics, fittings, and appliances) and establish storage needs. Then, in the “Decorate” section, sumptuous photos provide decorating inspiration for color schemes, window dressings, finishing touches, and more. Best of all, there’s no need to follow one plan from start to finish: pick and choose the elements that seem most practical and appealing to you from the many different options. The result: a kitchen that’s made to order!

Each comes packaged on a printed blister card.
