Book Description
Digging Her Own Grave
Landscaper Nina Quinn makes her living from surprise garden makeovers. It's not her fault that someone duped her into digging up the wrong yard. And she certainly can't be blamed when her handiwork turns the unsuspecting real owner apoplectic and he drops dead from a heart attack . . . can she? Nina's got enough trouble already, with her divorce from faithless hubby Kevin nearing completion and her unruly stepson up to his teenage neck in possibly illegal mischief. Now she's in danger of losing her business! But there's something screwy about this rather convenient "accidental" death of a man whom apparently no one could stand -- not even the "grieving" widow who's threatening to sue Nina's overalls off. To save her livelihood -- and her skin -- Nina's going to have to dig deeper into the dirt than she ever has before . . . and see what sort of slimy secret things crawl out.

garden mystery.......2007-08-23
An enjoyable, albeit simplistic mystery. I do like Ms. Webber's development of characters. I would like to get "Nina" to design my backyard makeover!
Just plain silly.......2007-07-14
According to the reviews here on Amazon, Ms. Webber clearly has her fans. I am not one of them. This book comes across like one of those silly party games in which one person starts off a story, and is then interrupted by the moderator, who points to a second person. The second person picks up the story line, trying to insert the most preposterous surprise (s)he can invent to turn the plot on its head, until a third person takes over and does the same thing, etc.
There is no logical continuity whatsoever in the book; the reader is expected to simply sit there and let all the improbable coincidences come showering down from the sky - and I THINK we're supposed to think this is funny, or cute.
If the real world were anything like the one that Ms. Webber has invented here, we would all be afraid to have any dealings with any other human being, because everybody is really someone else in disguise. We wouldn't buy any of her books, because when Amazon delivered them to us, we would discover that they were written in black ink on navy blue paper, and in an extinct Eskimo language besides. Perhaps she and her fans would find that all to be highly amusing, but I wouldn't. Even if someone is going to invent a different world in which to set a novel, that world has to have a certain degree of internal consistency in order for the book to make sense. And this one doesn't.
Gardening with a twist!.......2007-05-13
Loved this sleuth/mystery. First I had read in this series and will certainly read more. Held my attention to the last page!
Nina Gets Taken by Surprise!.......2006-07-26
In the 3rd book in the Nina Quinn Mystery series, Nina is hard at work completing a new backyard make-over for the relatives of her soon-to-be ex-husband's deceased wife. It seems complicated, but Nina cannot stop herself from the opportunity to snoop about her ex's first wife, and rushes into a makeover for their dilapidated yard. In the midst of the one-day makeover, the real owner of the property comes home early from work, to discover Nina and her crew excavating his backyard. Keeling over from shock, the homeowner dies...apparently from a heart attack. His wife quickly shows up on the scene, and threatens Nina with a lawsuit that could put an end to her successful business. Nina discovers that the people that hired her for the makeover are really the next-door neighbors, who owned a health food restaurant with the deceased. Adding to Nina's distress is her upcoming divorce (in less than two weeks), and the premature labor of her efficient office manager, Tam. Nina works overtime to save her business, and quickly discovers murder is part of the surprise after all.
I love this series! Nina is a great character, and I found myself laughing aloud at times while reading this book. I couldn't put the book down, and found myself guessing at the outcome. The book contains wonderfully vivid characters and a great premise...it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Nina performed a make-over on either the wrong house or was hired by someone other than the owner. I cannot wait for the next installment in the fun mystery series!
If you enjoy the Meg Langslow mystery series by Donna Andrews, you might want to consider giving this series a try.
The first book in the series is called "A Hoe Lot of Trouble". Enjoy!
Delightful Read!.......2006-06-11
Probably the best cozy I've ever read! I have to admit I was skeptical at first, as the premise didn't sound all that interesting to me, but based on the two previous reviews, I decided to try it, and I'm glad I did. The dialogue is realistic and naturalistic--doesn't sound overly expository. The characters were interesting and quirky without being annoying and forced. The main character is nicely drawn and enjoyable to spend time with. Nothing felt formulaic. The plot kept me guessing, and there was just a touch of sexiness to keep things moving along. I plan to pick up Webber's other two books and start from the beginning. If you're looking for a bloodless cozy with charming characters and an easy, enjoyable read, give this one a try!

In many ways, The pH Miracle is reminiscent of an earlier generation of diet books. Much of the focus is on an intestinal cleansing program, followed by a diet that is 70 to 80 percent vegetables, coupled with a tremendous selection of supplements that authors Robert and Shelley Young recommend to everyone, no matter what their age, gender, or state of health.
The Youngs point their fingers at candida as a main culprit in the poor health of many people. Unfortunately, they back up their claims with only vague references, such as "a 1991 study" and "a leading cancer researcher." Many readers may wish for more specific evidence, but instead will have to make do with enthusiastic recommendations, alphabetized lists of vegetables, and pleasing chapters with vegetarian recipes that taste good no matter how you feel about the diet as a whole.
Sprinkled throughout the book are short testimonials of people who were able to reverse cancer, improve their digestion, and lower their cholesterol by following these recommendations, and it's hard to argue with the cholesterol-lowering results that a 70 percent vegetable diet will achieve. Still, the medical value of much else in the book remains hotly contested, and as always, it's wise to check with your doctor before starting off in search of miracles. --Jill Lightner

Changed my life!.......2007-10-10
I have been dealing with some health issues for over a year. After reading this book and implemeting the Program, the results have been nothing short of miraculous. I have never been happier, healthier, clearer, or filled with more energy in my entire life. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand their health and how it relates to every other area of your life!
excellent information.......2007-09-29
there's information here that may seem odd, but it does check out with common sense. I think there are major benefits to trying out the ideas, although can't get myself to go whole hog on all of them
The PH Miracle is Truly an Eye-Opener.......2007-09-25
I've been following the very basic principles of this book for about 7 months now. Over the course of this time, and not following it as closely as I should, thus far I have still shed over 30 pounds with very little effort. I had reached the point where I had tried diet after diet with unsatisfactory results. The PH balance theory, as described by Dr. Young, made a lot of sense to me. I figured at the very least to test the water at home (we have a well system and the PH is now balanced to just above 7) and the water at work (bottled--it tested at 6.0). I use baking powder (one alternative suggested) to raise the PH of the drinking water at work. This simple change has to be credited for a lot of the success I've had.
Another change I have made is to try to avoid any artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, suclarose, and nutrisweet. The calories in sugar (yes, an acidic no-no) are still better for you than man-made chemicals which are toxic to your cells, and frankly if you consider a teaspoon of sugar has about 18 calories, if memory serves, it's still a fairly negligible amount of calories versus the questionable alternatives to sugar.
The PH Miracle book, and the companion books by Dr. Young, is an easy to follow guideline. For me, it certainly has been a miraculous find. I plan to re-read it and incorporate more of the suggested changes into my diet.
If only everyone read this book..........2007-08-27
....America would be a better place to live. Somewhere in history the propaganda machine kicked out important nutrition information that was largely based on private interests. And now, here we are; sick, tired, diseased and frustrated with life.
This book makes sense. Before reading, however, question your beliefs...and not just the ones you WANT to question...question all of them. Then, you'll find it easy to accept Dr Young's suggestions. The most obvious one to question was that about breakfast....I don't know why breakfast is some over-sugar'ed bowl of cereal or pop-tart in America.
Start with the cleanse. It'll reset your sugar cravings and help you understand the mental component of food, eating and hunger. You'll find during a cleanse that you have more energy than ever, feel light and free, and yet still, somewhere in the back of your mind, some part of you BEGS for food. It's like a little monster that exists within your mind...but don't worry, after very little time, it is starved to non-existence, along with you belief that eating food is in important part of your every day social life.
Read this book and then recommend it to others.
It Just makes Since.......2007-08-13
We are now going on five weeks on Dr.Young's ph miracle and its awesome. The whole family my children included have adopted Dr. Young's practices and we feel great. We have lost weight and inches off of our waist its truly a great way to live.

Customer Reviews:
A unique cookbook.......2006-04-01
This cookbook is notable for a couple of reasons. It was the first trade paperback original cookbook ever published in the U.S. (1956) and of all of James Beard's 20 or so books, the most popular according to the James Beard Society website. Since its original publication it has been revised a few times and is now in it's third edition.
Sometimes less is more, especially when you're a novice cook who doesn't want to spend an inordinate amount of time on complex recipes. I have a number of large, hardcover cookbooks I have bought over the years but I have on more than one occasion opened them and become so overwhelmed with the sheer number of recipes, the sheer minutae of information and the complex nature of some of the recipes that I have quickly put them back on the shelf and gone back to making some standard dish of mine I had already made many times before. The impressive this about Beard's book is that you will find the basic, standard recipe's for such Italian dishes as polenta and risotto (for example) described in the simplest manner possible without being overwhelmed with an entire chapter on the history and variations of that dish as some books confront you with. There is a time and place for such detail but I'm finding this is the cookbook I pull of the shelf most frequently when trying out a new dish.
There is an excellent entry on beans that can be applied to practically any legumes out there from garbanzos to pintos to gigantes (giant Greek beans). Once you have the basics committed to memory you can start experimentng with more complex variations. The same can be said for most of the other chapters.
Beard writes with wonderful clarity and wit and I can now see why this cookbook has such avid fans. My only regret is that Beard himself (a closeted gay man) didn't live to experience a time when he could feel comfortable stepping out of his own personal closet.
Clear and straightforward.......2004-12-28
Everyone ought to have at least one cookbook that covers basic recipes for just about anything you may have to cook. And this is the one I recommend. You can be staring at a cut of meat, or a fish fillet. Or wondering what cheese and wine to serve with fresh fruit. Or trying to guess how to make a cheese fondue. Or a pie for dessert. This is the book that will help you do it all. The recipes are not particularly fancy, nor are they exotic, but they're safe.
A great book for the beginner chef only.......2004-07-06
I really wanted to add a James Beard book to my collection of cookbooks and this one always got great reviews. It does have some excellent recipes, mostly classical dishes and some old world classics like Moussaka and Hungarian Goulash. It explains the techniques very well. Where I was dissappointed was in the number of recipes; there are too many variations and too few unique recipes. Also, some of the recipes are very very basic, such as omelette making or a London Broil. I would have liked some more interesting cuisine. Still, I am keeping it as it is a good reference book with some standard classical dishes in one volume: Pot au Feu, Yorkshire Pudding, Goulash.
Absolutely indispensable!.......2003-10-25
Still using a small-format paperback copy of the original edition that we got 25 years ago! We are now replacing that copy with a better one, since our old eyes are having a little trouble with the small print, and since we want a book that lays open more easily when we are cooking.
Beard, along with Mark Bittman, are the the only two cookbooks for Americans that tell you how to do virtually any common task. If you aren't sure how to fix a particular food (or dish) they will tell you very clearly and quickly. Recipes are not particularly slavish, but suggest ready substitutions.
Some of the first things we learned from Beard how to make were omelets with herbs, red pasta sauce, chili with beans, and steaks seared in a hot frying pan. We know these sound very basic, but we still find them to be staples in our household and for company because they are so delicious.
When we first married, we used the Better Homes and Garden cookbook successfully to get started (it has pictures!) but Beard and Bittman are better for cooks with even the slightest experience (i.e., those who can find the kitchen!)
We have (and have discarded) lots of other cookbooks, but Beard will always be right at hand for quick reference.
Standard equipment for every kitchen.......2000-12-14
Although the cover fell off my copy years ago, I still use the book. It only makes sense there's no cover. After all, my cookbook is a first printing from about forty years ago, and was passed on through at least two other families before making its way to me.
This book covers the basics of North American/western European cuisine. I learned how to make killer omelettes (plain, or oven-puffed with cheese sauce) with this, and my terrified-of-the-kitchen hubby learned to make a delicious ham supper. Whenever I'm sick and can't cook but we're expecting company, he always goes for this particular cookbook. If he can't find it, he whinges ferociously. None of my other books are as clear and concise, I guess.
The James Beard Cookbook is an excellent book for anyone. For the absolute novice, it details the best ways to cook bacon and eggs. For the kitchen maestro, it explains numerous sauce and souffle techniques. So, if you're looking for a good basic cookbook for yourself or for a lost-in-the-kitchen bachelor(ette), I strongly recommend this book.

Promises much but delivers little.......2005-11-29
This skimpy little book has a catchy title and full-coloured pictures but does not add much to an observant dog owner what he/she already knows. While the book maybe a quick read to prospective or new owners, I would recommend "Puppies for Dummies" by Sarah Hodgson which gives you the A-Z of raising those cute but oftentimes wilful pups and "The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need: From Avoiding Accidents to Banishing Barking, the Basics For Training a Well-Behaved Dog" by Gerilyn J. Bielakiewicz, Andrea Mattei which discusses the highly effective method of clicker training for dogs at length. These books were major life-savers as I was a complete novice when I adopted my 3-month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi a month ago. I picked up insightful and no-nonsense tips off of the "Dummies" series and taught my pup over 10 commands with ease in just days (!) with the aid of a clicker. Betsy Brevitz's "Hound Health Handbook" is also another excellent reference book which offers credible advice from a writer-turned-vet behind the award-winning urbanhound.com site. These books are must-reads for owners who are experiencing problems instilling discipline/obedience in their dogs, not least prospective owners who are contemplating what breed to buy and the pros and cons as well as problems and the how-tos of adopting a dog(s) to complete their lives.
mediocre.......2003-01-13
This is a short review, as it is a short book. "What is My Dog Thinking" is a satisfactory overview of various canine behaviors and their meanings. This overview didn't offer much that I haven't read elsewhere. Also disappointing was its lack of instruction on how to address certain dog "feelings" - for example, if I can interpret that my dog is fearful, what are some basic ways that I can help my dog deal with this fear?
That said, for its price and the time it takes to read it and occasionally refer back to it, it probably is a worthwhile purchase for a dog owner or prospective dog owner, even if it is somewhat lacking. However, it would not be my first choice.

In a sports world of inflated salaries and even more inflated egos, Grant Hill is a refreshingly modest voice for change. Young players especially will enjoy this book about what it was like to grow up as the son of a pro football great and how Grant himself became a star basketball player at Duke and then Rookie of the Year in the NBA.

Changed Game.......2006-05-22
This book is mainly about the life of Grant Hill and his basketball career. Grant Hill's Basketball career started in jr. high and went through high school. Grant Hill got his NBA scholarship in high school, and he now plays for the Pistons. He is not like any other basketball player. When Grant Hill does something good he doesn't rub it in the opponent's face, he just keeps playing. I think that Grant Hill is a very inspiring athlete to younger kids.
I think that Grant Hill would be a cool, and fun person to hangout with because he says in the book that he has a good personality and that he doesn't just thinks about himself or his money. He thinks about his family and his fans. Grant Hill has a very simple life outside of his basketball career. Besides all of his fans wanting autographs! When Grant Hill goes out to eat somewhere he can't eat in peace he always hast to sign autographs for someone. But other than that Grant Hill lives a simple life. Grant Hill is a very inspiring athlete to younger kids, and me!
Change the Game book review.......2001-02-22
Overall I thought the book Change the Game was pretty good. One of the things I liked most about the book was that Grant never talked about all the money he made. I also liked how Grant expressed his feelings about problems kids face today. However, one thing I didn't like about the book was it was sort of short. Grant also moved from one topic to the next very quickly. Other than those things the book was good.
Average book.......2000-05-19
This book is basically about Grant's ideals that he learned from his parents. It's a very quick read and if you like Grant Hill, then I would suggest you check this out. If you aren't much of a Grant Hill fan, then don't purchase this.
The Best Basketball Biography I've Read.......1997-12-22
Grant Hill's book was very enjoyable, and it was very to-the-point. This was the best basketball biography I've read yet. The only problem was that it was over too soon. I finished this book way too quickly.
