A classic wealthy-relative-murdered-for-her-money plot, witty dialogue between Poirot and Hastings, and a gripping denouement make DUMB WITNESS one of the most quintessential of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot detective novels, along with THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES and AFTER THE FUNERAL. Highly recommended.

Not one of Christie's best, but not bad........2005-08-03

The story itself is fairly routine (and bears more than a couple of similarities to "Murder on the Links", one of Christie's earliest works). However, the reader is advised to avoid the Berkley editions at all cost; they are sloppily edited and are full of mistakes that anyone with even a basic knowledge of Agatha Christie (or, for that matter, the English language) wouldn't make. The St. Martin's Press editions are much better.

The Dumb Witness of the title is a dog named Bob. A dog who loves his mistress and possibly is the only witness to her murder. If it was a murder ... Hastings and Poirot work together, trade quips and get on one another's nerves as they work through a neat collection of suspects. This isn't high art, but it is quaint and well crafted. I recommend it.

I've read a few of Agatha Christie's book and I thought that this book was only OK. I was a little intrigued by the title of this book, but it has nothing to do with the story! She is one of my favorite authors, but I felt that this was not one of he best novel.

This a good book, but not that great. An old woman writes to Poirot, informing him that she fears that one of her own family may murder, one attempt had all ready been made. But the lady is delayed, and when Poirot arrives on the scene, the woman is dead. Who did it? This plot wiil keep you reading till the end.

Where's the Fire!!!.......2006-03-28

I looked forward to receiving the latest offering of Agatha Christie read by Hugh Fraser. My expectations were high because of former recordings by the same reader. When what to my wondering ears but Mr. Fraser sounded as though he were announcing for the Indy 500. The actual speed of his voice was normal but the spaces between the words were excised, leaving a veritable jumble of crushed words clusters which could not be understood much less savored.
I checked with my sister who is an avid Christe on CD fan who thought that her CD's were being read by Daffy Duck.
We are both thoroughly disappointed in Audio Editions of "Dumb Witness" and "Murder is Easy"

Disappointing.......2002-09-28

Many stories in this collection are just ... or disturbing for the sake of being so. Several didn't even really have any plot to speak of. There were a few gems, some whose basic plot had potential to graduate to full books, but many lacked originality or taste. If I simply want erotica without much story I can frankly read ... forums. C. Tan should have read some more L.K. Hamilton's work and only let shorts that had somewhere close to that level of plot in to this collection (as I said there were a couple that really had potential). All in all, if you can find it cheap enough it would be worth it just for the few shorts that make the rest of the muck bearable. And don't forget that in short story collections you can always just skip 10 pages or so and read a totally new and unconnected story, as I often had to (something very unusual for me).

Erotica Vampirica: a Valiant Sophomore Effort.......2001-01-08

Erotica Vampirica is a better collection of stories than contained in Blood Kiss, also edited by Ms Tan. She has done a better job in this book at providing books that are both sensual and have a story to them.

Mist Kisses by Renee M. Charles is far and away the best story in the anthology, but there are worthy contributions by other authors that round out a much better collection this time around.

I would recommend this to anyone who owns Blood Kiss as it may renew your faith in Ms Tan's ability as an editor. Additionally, it is a well written collection of stories, so anyone with even a passing interest in erotic vampire stories would enjoy this book.

Its many black and white photos make learning to massage a baby look easy and natural. The book is clearly written, helpful, and well researched. My favorite dessert book.......2007-06-14

This book has the best chocolate mousse recipe, far superior to anything else I tried. I have made a few ice cream recipes, tangerine mousse, various cobblers and crisps, and the taste was always superb, while preparation was usually easy. I have at least twenty other dessert cookbooks, but I use them for recipes not found in this one (tiramisu, for example). This is an outstanding book, a must for all who love fruit desserts.

this is a very mixed review. as an artist and culinary persurer i was excited to find this book illustrated by wayne theibaud. as an admirer of his pastry paintings in their lush simplicity i hoped the book would contain many paintings like the cover art. alas not! just a few tiny black and white etchings. then i read the book. yes, all reviews are correct--great desserts of deserved acclaim. i wrote this because i wish someone else had mentioned the lack of color art work [or even photographs] in the book .

GET THIS BOOK!.......2002-12-18

I couldn't agree with Bob Carpenter more! I do exactly the same thing. I started making the ice creams and sorbets this summer. I've been making ice cream for twenty years - it's NEVER been better. I DO bake, unlike Mr.Carpenter, but I've been so wrapped up in the frozen desserts that I haven't even gotten to the baked stuff. Bob, if you haven't, make the meyer lemon sorbet. It's a revelation. Lindsey Shere's retired now, and I guess that means no more books. Too bad. She was a true original.

Spectacular Sherbet and Ice Cream: Technique and Recipes.......2001-08-06

With the taste of the wild plum sherbet (p. 174) still on my palate, I have to tell you that this is the only book you'll ever need to make the most spectacular sherbets and ice creams you've ever had. Lindsey Shere organizes her book around types of fruit, and the comparative analyses are alone worth the price. You quickly learn how apples, pears and quinces differ from berries and how they both differ from summer fruits such as nectarines and plums. This book has a lot of classic tart, cobbler and related recipes. I don't bake and use this book solely for fruit sherbets and ice creams! I can attest to the results of several fruit cobblers that my wife made from this book (she's used it for years), but I can't vouch for the recipes firsthand.

For the past two years, I've been following Shere's inspiring book religously in making sherbets and ice creams from whatever's fresh at the Union Square Greenmarket on a given Saturday. I've made wild plum sherbet, nectarine sherbet, apricot sherbet, apricot ice cream, peach ice cream, blueberry ice cream, raspberry sherbet, strawberry sherbet, strawberry ice cream and even coconut (though those weren't grown locally). Each one has been great, and I'm only using a fifty dollar Krups ice cream maker. The differing recipes and strong attention to technique provide a clinic on balancing acidity through lemon peel, sweetness through sugar, and texture through blending and straining.

Thirty-two colour plates are disbursed throughout the book in eight page sections. The first two sections, or 16 pages, are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. Almost all `BP' figures, along with their varieties (177 individual images) are illustrated to assist in identifying the different characters in your collection. The third 8-page colour section, is devoted to Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge storybook figures, 68 individual images, which may be used by the collector to assist in building a meaningful collection. The main body of the catalogue, which includes the black and white images, the technical data, and prices, has been reviewed and updated to bring it current to 2005. Nearly everyone seems to have countless photographs languishing in boxes and drawers or in tired, old photo albums or scrapbooks. The New Photocrafts by Suzanne Tourtillot demonstrates that there are plenty of ways to move beyond using these traditional methods to preserve and enjoy your photos. Forty projects by a team of two dozen talented designers employ photographic prints, photocopies, image transfers onto both fabric and polymer clay, and digital photos, yielding such items as lamp shades, switch plates, frames, pillows, pins, boxes, journals, and tote bags.

Background information is provided on each general technique, along with step- by-step instructions for every project. There's also a brief but useful introduction to taking better photographs. Some directions could have used more careful editing (one project, for example, calls for highlighting textured areas of clay with paint but doesn't describe making the textured surface in the first place; the instructions also neglect to specify that the object must be placed in the oven to bake). Nevertheless, the lessons overall are adequate for creating these mostly interesting and sometimes innovative designs, which range from simple to advanced, in styles from childlike to sophisticated. --Amy Handy

Not very exciting.......2002-04-19

While not completely without merits, The New Photo Crafts was a big disappointment from a publisher (Lark Books) whose books are usually exciting and interesting, both visually and instructionally. The book begins with a quick overview of photography methods, types of film & cameras, and an intro-duction to taking a "good" picture. The first chapter is perfunctory and uninspiring, but is okay as a basic (very basic) overview to get the reader started. This book, however, lacks the usual quality, visual and instructional excitement usually found in Lark books. Many of the projects are very shoddily put together: Anniversary Couple Commemorative Portrait is very roughly cut out around the edges as is the diorama photo on page 35. These projects look amateurish and slapped together. The refrigerator photo frame magnets are insultingly basic--just pieces of cut out felt with a photo sandwiched in between and a magnet glued to the back. Any half-way intelligent or talented crafter could come up with that one out on their own. The School Friends Frame was another project that was amateurish, unattractive and completely uninspiring: Photocopied, individual portrait photos of schoolmates, placed around the perimeter of a sheet of white paper with a child's drawing in the center and the whole thing plopped into a clip frame. How exciting is that to "create" to anyone more skilled than a grade schooler? The Fabric Photo Album was a mess. The fabrics and findings appeared slapped together with no thought to composition, color or pleasing arrangement. The first line in the instructions, ironically, says to "Take the time to plan the design." Perhaps the designer of this project should have taken her own advise. The book is not completely without merits, however, and there are some projects that are interesting. The lampshade project is funky and fun, and could be adapted to any size shade and fixture, with endless themes. The Flip Books are a fun project, and the Carmen Miranda doll is a real fun, funky way to use a photograph in an unexpected way. I liked the light switch plate a lot--it has clear instructions, and many possibilities depending on the type of room and photo used. The polymer clay transfers are another great idea. There are quite a few ideas for different handmade cards and folding book-type cards that are nice, too. But overall, in my opinion, this book was not worthy of the Lark name, and I couldn't recommend it to crafters who are more advanced or who are looking for something really original.

Surprisingly Good!.......2001-08-15

This book was so much better than I thought it would be. I expected the usual tacky, cliche photo crafts, but that was not the case. There were quite a few ideas I had not seen before (and I have a LOT of craft books) and lots of other projects that were nicely updated to the tastes of today's more sophisticated crafter. I especially liked the "Vintage Print Quilt" which can easily be done by those of us that don't sew, as it's all zigzag stitching. The author uses a number of different photo materials and methods in her projects -regular photographs and prints, photocopies, image transferring to fabric and polymer clay, digital photographs and hand-colouring photos. I haven't read all the text, so I can't say if it's well written, or not, but many of the projects certainly look interesting. You will not be disappointed.

The New Deal, with its WPA art projects, was a golden age for lithographic printmakers. In this collection are found a tribute to Gustave von Groschwitz, a central figure in the federal Graphhic Arts Division of the WPA in New York; an essay on the imagery in the 1936 calendar of the American League Against War and Fascism; and an essay on and checklist of the prints of Robert Gwathmey, active in the Philadelphia WPA project and concerned with conditions of African Americans in the South.

Included with this volume is an original lithograph by Eric Avery. Over the course of the past century the struggle against racism took many forms, from petitions and lawsuits to sit-ins and marches. This book records the testimony of eleven scholar-activists who challenged prevailing racial beliefs and practices while engaging in resistance and reform. Included in this group are nine African Americans (Kenneth B. Clark, John Henrik Clarke, St. Clair Drake, W.E.B. Du Bois, John Hope Franklin, John Glover Jackson, Hylan Lewis, Frank Snowden Jr., and Robert C. Weaver); one Sri Lankan who lives and works in Britain (A. Sivanandan); and one white American (Herbert Aptheker).

Most of these men began their careers before World War II, in a time when biological conceptions of race dominated public policy and severely limited the opportunities available to people of color. By struggling with these impediments in their personal and professional lives, each in his own way helped redefine race as the social and cultural construct it has always been.

To highlight both the similarities and the differences in their experiences, the editors asked each of the subjects the same set of general questions about formative influences, major obstacles, and principal accomplishments. These were followed by more narrowly focused queries about specific writings. Most of the responses were recorded on tape as interviews; several were submitted as written reminiscences; and one, the essay on Du Bois, as the shared recollection of two associates who had worked closely with him for many years.

The result is a singular collection of autobiographical accounts that not only testify to the personal courage of these individuals in overcoming the ravages of racism but also document their contributions to the establishment of a vital antiracist tradition in American thought and culture.
