Nosey Telemarketer.......2006-08-16

The interesting part of this amateur sleuth, Helen, is her dead end telemarketer job. Good insight into the telemarketers world: predominantly abusive calls received by telemarketers, their low self-esteem, poor working conditions & low pay. You feel sorry for them & wish you can be kinder to them next time round when they call on you.

As for the mystery factor in this book, its average with quick turning action so you won't get bored. Helen is simply too nosey to stay put in any one place at a time so the mystery unravels in many places with quick wit. The repartee between Helen & Margery, the landlady is always entertaining.

Maybe I am in a slump, but..........2006-02-27

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others in the series. That will not turn me off of them though. I fulling intend to read the next one. I agree with others, not sure how I feel about Phil, will not go further with that one, do not want to spoil anything. If you have not read any of this series, please start with the first one, as the characters build up. Also, I missed Peggy, she didn't seem to make much of an appearance in this book.

I thought this sounded like a fun mystery to read, but I was wrong.
I got about 1/3 of the way through until I gave up. It just didn't keep my attention. Plus I couldn't really get a feel for the main character. I guess I couldn't relate to her much.
I'll pass on the rest of this series too.

A telemarketer overheard murder.......2005-09-23

Helen Hawthorne is working another dead-end job with payment in cash so she can evade her ex-husband and the law. This time she's doing telemarketing. While she's good at it, she gets plenty of hang-ups and people cursing her out. But then she overhears a murder during a phone survey she's conducting to the home of Henry Asporth. She reports it to the police, but after their investigation, they tell her it was just a show on TV.

Helen is convinced she heard a murder. So she does some research through the computer at work to determine whether a woman lived at that address. Once she determines that Laredo lived with him, she contacts her sister Savannah and they begin investigating. Helen likes to stay as far away from police as possible.

Disrupting her enjoyable life at home are Fred and Ethel Mertz that moved into the apartment building. They are difficult to get along with and soon none of the neighbors are hanging out around the pool so they can avoid them.

As Savannah and Helen dig deeper and deeper into Henry Asporth and his friends, Helen finds herself in some sticky situations. Can they find the murderer without Helen being the next victim?

I always enjoy books in this series. Helen is a fun character and the people she works with and the other tenants in the apartment building are such great characters. They really add to the story.

While I sometimes have trouble believing anyone is really after Helen, I think the stories are well constructed and such a fun read. I highly recommend this book.

Not Dying to Read This.......2005-04-07

The book is ok. I was deceived by the cover somewhat; after a great experience with the Yellow Rose Mystery books by Leann Sweeney, I was hoping this series was going to be just as good. Not really. The main character, Helen, is a smart forty-something working as a telemarketer in order to avoid her ex husband. I really didn't think the whole story about Helen and her ex was believable, but I suppose it's the only way the author could place this otherwise smart woman in such deplorable working conditions. Helen just isn't exciting; she isn't a particularly good sleuth, and the story and characters weren't involving. I'd recommend this book with caution.

Duck Feet.......2000-06-09

From the playful antics of the town children (oddly not at all realistically drawn (perhaps an allusion to the authors' 'Dennis the Menace' inspiration? ) - not my favorite element of the stories - although fun enough) to the ominous "toc toc toc" of the traveling witch on the mysterious object she carries, there were enough gorgeous graphics and plot turns to keep me reading straight through to the end. There were several "flashbacks" on the various inhabitants of Palomar which further developed their characters. Rather like getting to know real people, the characters of this amazing comic series become more surprising and complex with each revelation!

My favorite book!.......2007-09-20

I had to write a quick review simply because the one that shows first is so negative. This is my favorite book. The writer below seems to be inferring things from the book that I never did... I completely disagree with the author of the last comment. I do not think Peck is endorsing religion, but rather spirituality, but if you get yours from religion, so be it. Why was he so shocked about the patient and sex comment?.... I am not going to even expand on each aspect of his comment... it would just be a jumbled mess... I recommend this book to anyone. It reveals universal truths and every line... almost every line rings true to me and to many, many people. I understand, after reading the last comment, that it may fly in the face of what is generally accepted by the field (when necessary)... just my kind of book.

Road Less Traveled.......2007-09-19

The book was a collection of run-on sentences. The author appearently, has only a passing aquaintence with periods. The most dissapointing aspect of the book was the title. It is written from the perspective, of an upper, middle class, conservative christian; harly the road less traveled. Unfortunatly, the lowest rating you can give is one star; what a waste of money!

Very important book.......2007-09-12

Quite possibly the most important book I have ever read as I do believe that this book has had a bigger impact on my life than any other. However, I am at a bit of a loss to describe it as it covers a smattering of topics from love to discipline, maturity and religion. If I could only recommend one book to you, this would be it. A MUST read.

Eye opener.......2007-08-03

Perhaps the best self-help book ever.......2007-06-23

I first read this book 20 years ago, and have read it more than once, and it had a huge effect on me. I just purchased a copy for my 21-year-old grandson, who can benefit from these messages about love, discipline, and responsibility. The book isn't religious, it's spiritual and psychological. I think the concepts in this book are important and the world would be a better place if more people understood them, concepts about taking responsibility for oneself and realizing that love is a decision and a commitment, not just a passing feeling. I still admire this book after all these years.

Good Resource, Could be Even Better.......2006-07-06

This was a good resource and it was helpful in giving me ideas for plantings in my garden. I like the idea of showing the different takes of landscaping designers for a particular problem. It was very comprehensive with info on plant care and pruning, and even covered how to make patios, flagstone walkways, and terraced planters.

Although the close-up photos were helpful, I wish the painted mock-ups of the various designers' ideas was more detailed (some of the flowering plants illustrated with no flowers, etc.) so I could get a better idea of how the overall design would look. Also, the listing of plants in the back is ordered by their scientific names (come on! this is intended for the average consumer, isn't it?) rather than by their popular names, so that part was difficult to use as a reference.

Despite my reservations, the information is fairly easy to access and I found myself referring to this often as I designed and worked on my garden.

Great Design Ideas and Good Photos.......2005-07-22

I love this book and use it all the time for clients...it has lots of plant ideas and color photos...also, it gives concise information regarding the plants requirements, i.e., sun, water, etc...
I highly recommend this book even if you're just sprucing up your current garden or want to make a totally new garden...
This book is great for all of southern california and I think is the most comprehensive garden design book I have in my collection....

Lanscape design in Callifornia for dummies.......2003-03-04

I borrowed this book from the library first to see if it was any good. I liked it so much I bought it. If you are designing your home gardens from scratch this book is a must have. It helps you design and select plants for around your home. Selecting plants is a snap. I recently moved into a house which needed landscaping and I am using this book to design my backyard space. Well written and concise with plans that are easily translated to your space.This book is not good for looking prants up to see if a particular plant would work in a specfic light situation. Its not an almanac.

I would have given it five stars except for the fact that there are Norfolks in the calendar too which, while cute was not what I wanted.
Photos are all great and nice spaces for each day to fill in memos.
Price should have been reduced seeing as how I bought it in Jan. but otherwise a good purchase.

This is a good book to have if you own a Norwich Terrier.
There are not to many books on the Norwich.
The person who wrote the previous review spelled Norwich wrong.
Even in my Vet's computer the program has it spelled wrong.
Norwich is not even listed in the animal shelter's computer program.

This book provides historical information on the Norwhich and general dog care information, that is standard in this series. The color pictures are a nice touch and show the Norwhich in their best adorable poses. It is good for the first time dog owner who may need general information on the Norwhich and general dog issues.

After reading this book I had to return to the scene of the crime.
As a lover of Provence, I headed first to the local cafe in Maussane where all the regulars discussed this terrible misdeed.
I eyed every gypsy suspiciously, wondering if they were the culprit. After a few more Pastis, I thought about the day he was finally returned to his loving home. Yo-yo in Provence is in my heart.

Through his unique pictures David takes you to Province, the gypsies, their culture, the search for Yo-yo, and lots more. The kidnapping of baby Yo-yo is a canine story that won't let you go until you get to the last page of the book!

Franklin Frazier, and political scientist Ralph Bunche--three black scholars who taught at Howard University during the New Deal and, together, formed the leading edge of American social science radicalism.

Harris, Frazier, and Bunche represented the vanguard of the young black radical intellectual-activists who dared to criticize the NAACP for its cautious civil rights agenda and saw in the turmoil of the Great Depression an opportunity to advocate class-based solutions to what were commonly considered racial problems.
