That there's an Establishment in any big city cop shop is no surprise, but the pols, police, press, and prosecutors who hang out together in W.E.B. Griffin's Philadelphia are so tightly connected that there's hardly any room to breathe in this Badge of Honor thriller. While a couple of minor characters from outside this old-boys' network make a few cursory appearances, plus the obligatory perp, it's mostly an inside story about golden boy Matt Payne, Main Line scion and third generation cop who's just been promoted to Homicide, and his mentors, friends, and family. The perp is a clever psychopath who rapes and murders his way across country while he's buying and selling exotic cars. Griffin fills in the story with plenty of carefully detailed department procedures in this newest in one of his many bestselling series (Honor Bound, Men at War, Brotherhood of War, The Corps). Justice triumphs and, of course, there's plenty of hero worship and not a flawed cop on the force, which won't surprise or displease the author's legion of true blue fans. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Newly promoted to sergeant, Philadelphia detective Matt Payne finds himself in the middle of three assignments at once: trying to nail down a cop killer, a serial rapist, and a murderer who fled to France 20 years ago. It's enough to burn out any cop. But Payne's not just any cop. And he's about to show the bad guys that there's no place they can hide from him-or from justice...

Disappointing book in a great series.......2006-05-25
I loved all of the other books in the series, but this book was very disappointing. The time frame of the book was placed in modern day, versus in the seventies, yet the characters are all of the same age. The seventies time frame made gave the series some flavor that this one was missing. The series was great until this book as it was realistic. In this book matt Payne becomes a super cop and is using his gun more often than any other cop. The other books were good to not make it a Hollywood gun battle, but this book was no where as creative or enjoyable as the others.
criminally negligent writing.......2005-12-07
This is my first WEB Griffin novel ... any my last. The thin story, amateurish writing and plot inconsistencies congeal into an incoherent waste of time. Here's what I mean....
Mr. Griffin has the annoying habit of using the same words and phrases over and over and over again takes me out of the story to wonder if he read what he had written. Some examples: "critters", "take the door", "doers".
He often repeats knowledge the reader already has, such as conversations or events. Most authors would summarize previously imparted information with "Matt explained what had happened." Mr. Griffin takes no such shortcuts.
His characters are -- to put it nicely -- blithering idiots. For example, the newly promoted, top-of-the-list Sargeant Matt Payne somehow forgets points of law, evidence handling, police procedures and so forth. The fictional citizens of Philadelphia should be concerned.
Occasionally, the author tries to build some suspense by overly explaining a procedure or plan. Alerted by all the detailed information, the reader may suspect something is about to go awry. (For example, his explanation of how a prisoner is transported.) Of course, nothing happens. Maybe it's fun to be the teacher, but Mr. Griffin should remember he's really a storyteller.
I imagine even the dim bulbs in Mr Griffin's police department would recognize bad writing and stop this critter before he does it again.
Is this the last one?.......2005-08-22
The title suggests that maybe this is it for the Badge of Honor series. I hope not. I agree that sometimes he goes of on detailed tangents about the Philly PD and its inner workings, but he always comes back to the starting point.
The novels in this series were set in the early 1970's, but suddenly in this one we're in at least the late 90's. For the first time the characters are using cellphones and digital cameras, and reporter Mickey O'Hara is now driving a Buick Rendezvous. Digital cameras figure in the plot as the rapist/murderer likes to take pictures of his victims but leaves his camera behind at one scene. Payne, et al, are able to track him through the purchase records.
Sometimes Griffin is predictable: Payne is the center of controversy; he and Detective Jesus Martinez hate each other's guts, while he maintains a friendship with Detective Charley Mc Fadden; he meets beautiful women and has intense sex with them; he again manages to deliver instant justice via gunshot wounds.
But this time he doesn't do well with it. He gets a little loopy after this, his third major "good" shooting since coming on the job. It seems like Griffin realizes that readers of the series may find it a little unseemly and he reflects that in Payne's reaction to this incident.
All in all, though, it's not a bad book, nor is the series. From what I hear the depictions of Rizzo and Company in the earlier novels aren't too far off the mark, and I'd also bet that there were Peter Wohls, Denny Coughlins, Jason Washingtons, and Charley Mc Faddens in the Philly PD.
Enjoy.
Same Old Story.......2005-05-29
I'm a huge WEB Griffin fan, but I was disappointed in Final Justice. Mr. Griffin has lapsed into a too-often used formula for the Badge of Honor series. The formula goes something like this: Matt Payne gets a new assignment; Wohl, Lowenstein, Coughlin and Washington then proceed to pontificate on how inexperienced and unqualified Payne is for his new assignment and proceed to illustrate in 100 different settings and circumstances why Payne is inexperienced; Payne falls for a girl; Payne eventually solves the crime and/or catches the bad guy. Mr. Griffin needs to put this series to bed if he has run out of new and fresh ideas for it.
Not a bad read, but inconsistent with past Badge of Honor.......2004-07-20
The book, though a little inconsistent in parts, is still a good read for fans of the Badge of Honor series. The timeframe is supposed to take place 6 months in the future after the end of The Investigators. It probably would have made more sense to be 2 to 3, or even 5 years after. Car radios have been replaced with cell phones; Jason Washington is a Lieutenant in Homicide and on the Captain's list (he was a SGT in Special Operations at the end of The Investigators), Chief Inspector Coughlin is now a Deputy Commissioner, and Staff Inspector Mike Weisbach of the newly created Ethical Affairs Unit designed to replace Internal Affairs, is now in charge of Internal Affairs, a separate entity from Special Operations. Of course, there is also the new Mayor, DA, and Police Commissioner, with no explanation of their demise after only 6 months. Matt Payne is true to form with the ladies, either having two or three on the string or getting them shot (we think; it is unclear whether "Terry" survives the ordeal). I liked the fact that there was more of a hint to a relationship for Peter and Amy. However, I was a little disappointed with the last 60 pages. It was as if the author was tired of writing the book and was looking for a quick ending and really didn't leave room for an additional sequel which would have been nice. It was, overall, a fast-paced and enjoyable read for 3/4th of the book.

Strange..........2004-01-15
A very quirky novel, sorta sci-fi, with tongue-in-cheek writing that interacts with the author and reader. A samurai cat goes into hell to kill off Satan and find his sidekick. From there it gets real strange... :-)
The Perfect Ending.......2003-06-03
This is the final book of the adventures of samurai cat and what a perfect ending it is. Tomakato and Shiro versus all of their most famous enemies on the battlefield of hell. Mark mixs humor and violence better then any other writer. The jokes run the range from basic gag humor to serious jokes you have a good bit of knowledge to understand. The action is over the top and non-stop. The opening battle between our heroic duo and the hordes of Ghengis Khan is graphic and laugh out loud funny at the same time. Also a plus the book has so of the author's best drawings as well.
I enjoyed this book a lot.......2001-02-28
This book wasn't as funny as the previous Samurai Cat installments, largely (I think) because it relies less on satire than it does on its own legs. But it's still a very imaginitive work and many parts made me laugh out loud. All in all, it's very satisfying.
It uses a very clever premise to end the series: Samurai Cat descending into the depths of Hell to avenge his master, where he can re-encounter all of his foes who perished by his blade (or gun, or grenade, or ...) in the previous books. Admittedly, a first-time Samurai Cat reader probably won't catch all the references.
So if you've been following Samurai Cat through the years, what are you waiting for? But if you're a Samurai Cat virgin, then you should probably read at least one or two of the preceeding volumes before attempting this one.
Started out very funny but then I read more.......2000-05-22
In the beginning all the jokes were fresh and good and then somewhere around page 19? it disolved into nothing but mindless violence. And not in a good way. I guess I just couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I wont pick up anymore in the series but it was an enjoyable experience.
Samurai Cat Goes to Hell is absolutely tremendous!.......2000-04-19
Mark Rogers is hilarious and erudite! SCGTH is absolutely full of the most vividly bizzare imagery and clever wordplay. Plus, this guy knows more about Chinese history than any Gwailo I've ever read! Anyone who likes dinosaurs, Dante, decapitations, or, (to break the d-pattern,) the films of Ching Siu Tung should check out this book..and the other Samurai Cat books too!

13-digit ISBN is 9780743272094 Targeted primarily at single women looking for a clear formula that leads in the direction of marriage, Love Smart also aims to refresh current marriages that feel a bit lacking. Whether readers find it helpful will depend partially on their sense of humorDr. Phil titles one chapter "Bag 'em, Tag 'em and Take 'em Home", a pretty fair example of the rest of the jokes and the general attitude of the book's advice. Marriage is what it's about, and the dating game has specific rules that, once learned, any "player" can use to succeed. While not quite as strict as the infamous The Rules, this is a manual that treats marriage as a prize, winnable only by those who regard old-fashioned rules as the only possible set.
An early exercise suggests that women make detailed lists of the qualities they're looking for in a mate; five broad categories cover everything from social skills to physical appearance. Once a clear picture is formed of the ideal partner, it all boils down to marketing. Dr. Phil discusses conversation skills such as developing "icebreaker" questions and even digs up some of the old-school techniques that suggest checking headlines just to offer up-to-date topics, and making sure to ask questions about your date, rather than revealing much about yourself. Suggestions for internet dating are included in a separate chapter, and later chapters go into specific questions that cover personal background and relationship history in great detail.
The combination of new school humor with old-fashioned advice will appeal to women who are looking for both a plan for partnership and goofy jokes to lighten the pressure. Dr. Phil offers both in spades. Jill Lightner
Book Description
If you are sleeping single in a double bed or walking down the street thinking, How do I meet that guy?; if you're on your twentieth date and he's no more committed than when you first exchanged cell phone numbers; if everyone you know is getting married for the second time and you can't even get a first date; if you love the one you're with but the relationship needs some spark...then this book is for you.
In Love Smart: Find the One You Want -- Fix the One You Got, Dr. Phil tells people who are dissatisfied with their love lives to stop making excuses -- All the good ones are taken; I'm too fat/skinny/boring/unpredictable for anyone to love me; I should stick with the relationship I have, I'm not going to do any better -- and start taking action! Dr. Phil knows that you deserve a committed relationship, and it is within your control to have the one you want. First, though, you need to determine what you want in a partner, plot your course and get out there and create velocity in your pursuit of a loving connection. The dating world is a vastly new place: meeting people at bars or through friends used to be the only option, but that's not true anymore. Love Smart: Find the One You Want -- Fix the One You Got explores new possibilities, new places to meet people -- including the Internet -- and new activities to get involved in where you'll find interesting people. Or if you are simply looking to rekindle the relationship you are already in, Dr. Phil will tell you how to turn up the flame.
Love Smart: Find the One You Want -- Fix the One You Got will show you how to stop stumbling through your love life. You will learn to:
- Present the real you in the most flattering light. Are you your own best kept secret? Do you fail to show the world how truly fabulous and interesting you are? As Dr. Phil says, you can't fake fabulous. Don't act passive if three months into the relationship you're going to spring your true, opinionated personality on him; don't act wild if you really just want to sip tea with your mate in front of your favorite nighttime drama. Define who you are and then ride that horse!
- Peek behind the male curtain. Knowledge is power, and Dr. Phil tells you things about men that they don't necessarily want you to know -- their deepest needs and fears (yes, they have those, too, though they deny it), and how to decode their words and actions.
- Master the right moves. Once you've learned to put the best you forward, you need to go to places where you'll find interesting people and invite interaction. Don't fade into the wallpaper; get noticed and get involved. If you're already coupled up, learn to grow and nurture what you have and build a more fun, enjoyable and intimate relationship.
- Bag 'em, tag 'em and take 'em home. Once you put those right moves into action, there will be no stopping you! Dr. Phil shows you how to negotiate the relationship you desire and then close the deal with the one you want.
- Get out of your relationship rut. When you first fell in love, your heart raced just at the thought of him. But the daily grind, money problems, work, etc. have drained the life out of your relationship, and you take each other for granted. That doesn't mean you've fallen out of love. Dr. Phil shows you how to assess the state of your union and take the relationship to a deeper level.
Dr. Phil says there are no exceptions: There is somebody for everybody, and everybody deserves a relationship filled with love and excitement. Love Smart: Find the One You Want -- Fix the One You Got offers you the plan to find not just any relationship but the committed, loving, joy-filled relationship you've been waiting for.

True remedy to lost souls.......2007-09-28
Dr. Phil did an excellent job here in pointing out what is wrong and how to fix the problem in Man love woman-Woman loves man relationship. If followed, love and happiness is ahead of you.
Dr. Israel King, Ph D, Author of How To Keep A Man
Love Smart Can Make You Smarter At Love..........2007-09-10
I like Phil McGraws books because his psychological insights are straight to the point. This book is no different. I like how he gets to the root of the problems with women's need for a man when he says that many women seek marriage and love in a state of desperation. He says that the right way to approach any relationship is as if it's a game. Because finding love and romancing are all games and getting serious about them not only spoils the mood but also chase the man away. He says that a woman should keep in mind that she doesn't need a man to be happy. If you think that you do need a man to be happy then you are putting unnecessary pressure on yourself and are probably on your way to self-sabotage. So the first step to getting the relationship you want is to take a `brutal look at yourself'. Know what you want and what is holding you back and you are more likely to succeed.
Another very blunt insight of Phil's is that many women are looking for a fairytale like marriage. They walk around expecting their man to fulfill every little dream trait they can imagine. If a man doesn't carry each one of the women's projections she will often move on. Phil says that this is the wrong way to approach seeking a mate because no man will fulfill all your expectations. The best way to approach a relationship is to find a man who encompasses at least 80% of the qualities you seek in a man and have at least the potential to learn the rest and that is good enough. Relationships, like life, are about compromise. Rather than chasing the picture perfect image, take what's available within reason. Then build a relationship.
My favorite chapter in the book is probably number 6 called " Your Guy Q". Phil Mcgraw states that a woman should not expect her man to fit female logic. A man is a man. They are physically and socially designed to be different than women. To expect a man to behave like a woman and understand your every nuance is unrealistic and you will be setting yourself up for disappointment.
Then he provides insight into male psychology through the general misconceptions that women have about men. For example the idea that men are all about avoiding commitment (not necessarily), they grow up to be lie their fathers and compare all women to their mothers (yes, parents are important to understanding your man). Men also feel a need to be the leader in a relationship and will often think it is weak to acknowledge needs and will also feel a little insecure around strong willed women as they feel less needed.
He also provided outlines of other personality traits of guys including men to beware of ( such as sex fiends or accomplishment braggers who just want to use women), then goes into tips and techniques to meet men and have a good time. He also covers the kinds of questions to ask to get to know him, how to handle your own expectations and much more. This book is a must read for any woman who wants a long lasting and loving relationship.
Honest and Real.......2007-09-01
This book is a true honest book about men, and why women don't have them. You can learn here what you need to understand about men, yourself, and how and why you don't attract people to yourself. It was a lesson in self-confidence and helps you look at yourself and what you reveal to the world. Expectations are a wonderful thing, but be realistic, and be who you are. This is a great book for anyone looking to understand themselves better, and how they can use what they have to improve instead of changing themselves. Dr. Phil is an entertaining writer too so it's an easy read.
Straightforward advice on how to find a spouse.......2007-07-27
Many women yearn for the right man, but they don't have a dating plan or even a good idea of what to seek. Dr. Phil McGraw, therapist and popular U.S. TV talk show host, provides a strategy, not only for finding Mr. Right but also for getting him to commit. You'll learn how to identify and maximize your strengths, and use them to attract a great guy. Dr. Phil tests your "Guy Q" and then explains how men are wired differently from women. This provides a road map into the opposition camp and gives you an advantage when negotiating a commitment. Is his counsel new? Maybe not. Is it old-fashioned? Maybe, but his intent is strategic. He offers straightforward, no-holds-barred, attention-getting advice, and fans will enjoy his familiar down-home style. If you are caught in a dating rut, this might help you get back in the groove. We recommend this guide to those new to the genre of books on "How to Catch and Keep a Man." Read it the next time you find yourself unwillingly home alone on a Saturday night.

One cookbook you can not live without!!!.......2007-07-18
One of the best cookbooks out there - bar none! All the recipes are easy to make and the ingredients are easy to find. Favorite recipes - Basil Dressing, Painted Desert Salad, Enchiladas....
I get rave reviews whenever I open this book and use a recipe!
Love it!!.......2007-01-27
I love this cookbook. I just cooked three of the recipes for dinner guests
Painted Desert Salad, Baked Black Beans, and the Yam and Pepita Quesadillas. They were all a hit. This book was purchased after my boyfriend made the Quesadilla's for me for dinner one night and then a few days later a friend recommended the cookbook and I found the recipe. I thought he was just really creative!
Both my friend and boyfriend say that there isn't a bad recipe in this book. I believe it.
Best Vegetarian Cookbook.......2006-12-12
This is the best vegetarian cookbook we own (we have 17.) I enjoy cooking and serving tasty, wholesome food. I can count on the fact that any recipe I try from this cookbook will be a hit. The recipes are distinctive--sometimes with alot of ingredients. The blending of multiple, complex flavors makes for gastronomical delight. I highly recommend this cookbook, especially for vegetarians--or those who are looking to decrease their meat intake.
cookbook with heart.......2006-11-08
I am learning how to cook and although I'm not a vegetarian I prefer to only cook veggie at home. Rebar has a very friendly tone. I really appreciate that fact that it contains super simple recipes as well as some more involved ones so that I can pick. I feel like if I continue to cook from this book, I will soon be able to develop my own style and explore my own cooking creativity!
The only cookbook I use.......2006-08-12
I am the type of "cook" who generally eats out; I'm lazy and I like things that taste good. However, when I do decide to actually use my kitchen I ALWAYS use this cookbook. I'm not a vegetarian but I have LOVED everything I've made from the book (about 20 recipes). I trust it so much I tried out two new recipes when cooking for my boyfriend's parents for the first time. It is no-fail, and I want to buy a second copy just in case something happens to my first one.

The Complete Book Of Finches And Softbills.......2003-10-24
This book does not cover the different types of finches & softbills. It is very general information only, on breeding and care of finches & softbills, no help to the person wanting more specific info. on the different types of finches and their care.
More info. than the average bird owner even wants........2003-08-08
I think this is a very good, detailed book for someone new to finches & softbills. At times, it flips back & forth between finches & softbills in a paragraph, which can be confusing for a novice, but it's easy to figure out. It has enough nice pictures to give a good overview of many species, but is not a "picture book" - it is for someone who is serious about the birds and their care. Early on it has a section of compatability which is useful and neccessary. It has a lot of details on aviary housing (many finch books do), and bird rooms, which isn't useful to the average home/apt. bird owner, but more information is better than too little. It is definitely a good resource book.
Great alround General Care Book!!.......2003-06-17
This book encapsulates the best possible groundwork for the beginner to still leaqrning softbill fan. Comprehensive care and breeding "how to's"
I enjoyed this book immensely and learned some breeding tips even. Thanks

Victoriana and cats-it's a natural marriage. Celebrating the era when mousers, tabbies, and toms were swept off the farm and cherished with a passion unrivaled since ancient Egypt, Parlor Cats is a dazzling collaboration from the creators of A Victorian Scrapbook, Forget-Me-Nots, Joy to the World: A Victorian Book of Love
Originally adorning antique greeting cards and cut-out dolls, matchboxes and advertising trade cards, stationery and calendars, the endearing faces of Victorian cats live anew in Cynthia Hart's distinctive collages. Mixing paper ephemera from John Grossman's museum-quality Collection of Antique Images with fresh flowers, collectibles, lace and brocade, each lushly layered composition evokes a time that personified the cat as the epitome of domestic virtue.
Generously quoting from poetry, nursing rhymes, Godey's Lady's Book, and popular authors, Josephine Banks recounts the love affair between the Victorians and their cats. It's no accident that the cat is America's most popular pet-here is how it all got started. A selection of the Literary Guild. 126,000 copies in print.

This has to be the most eye appealing book for anyone who loves cats, especially if the cat lover is also into antiques. The antique "scrap" images are so numerous and varied that everytime you look at this book you find things you missed the time before. The design is very decorative and colorful and is a beautiful coffee table book. I recommend it highly!

Product Description
This multidimensional collection of essays explores the interrelation of religion, cultural identity, politics, literature, myth, and memory during the Roman Empire by focusing on the cultural dynamics embedded in and surrounding Philostratuss Heroikos, an early third-century C.E. dialogue about Homer and the heroes of the Trojan War. The essays focus on ritual and literary dimensions of hero cult; cultural and community identity reflected in the Heroikos and in early Christianity; and the cultural, literary, and political turn toward heroes in the negotiation of difference, particularly with those outside the Roman Empire. Contributors to this volume include classicists, archaeologists, ancient historians, and scholars of early Christianity. This volume is a companion to the new translation of the Heroikos published in SBLs Writings from the Greco-Roman World series in two versions: Flavius Philostratus: Heroikos and Flavius Philostratus: On Heroes.
