5 out of 5 stars --Story Quilts and Family Feuds--.......2002-09-24

This is the fourth book in the Earlene Fowler quilting mystery series.

Benni Harper and her husband Gabe Ortiz become involved in a police investigation after Benni discovers a woman's body floating in a lake next to their jogging path. The dead woman is dressed in a Mother Goose costume and Benni immediately recognizes her as Nora Cooper, a local storyteller.

Because of Benni's job as curator of the San Celina Folk Art Museum, she was well acquainted with Nora Cooper and they were both working on an upcoming Storytelling and Story Quilt Festival. Benni tries to stay out of the police investigation, but she keeps getting pulled in because she knew the victim and most of the suspects.

Benni and Gabe are newlyweds and still getting adjusted to living together which is difficult because they are both set in their ways. The situation is not helped by the arrival of three different relatives who all come to visit at the same time causing commotion in their small home.

Though Earlene Fowler gives us a patchwork of personalities and several different plots, she still manages to keep the reader interested and entertained.

I've read the entire series. Loved them all.

3 out of 5 stars Heavy on Quilts & Storytelling; Light on Mystery.......2001-09-07

In this book, Benni Harper, who is recently married to the Chief of Police, Gabe Ortiz, finds the dead body of one of the storytellers from the museum. Since she knows the victim and the suspects she tries to stay out of the investigation, but everyone thinks she knows more than she does.
I found the ending quite unsatisfying -- not because of who is revealed as the murderer, but the way in which this is discovered.
I also found Gabe's self-righteous macho posturing too much to take. He is at least as much to blame for the problems between him and his son, Sam, as Sam is. How could Sam not be troubled with a father who can't find anything good about him?

5 out of 5 stars Goose in the Pond.......2001-07-26

I have read 5 of the 8 Benni Harper mysteries. Being a serious quilter, and an avid reader I find books fairly predictable. Ms. Fowler keeps you guessing until the very end!! Ofter the title of the book which relates to a specific quilt block is not revealed until late in the book. She has so captured me that when I was telling my small quilt group about the books they thought I was talking about a real family!! I have ordered all of the remaining books that I have not read, and wish Ms. Fowler could produce one a week to keep me entertained when I am not quilting. Books are ment to help you be part of the story and these do an excellent job at that! It is nice that the characters in the books remain the same and it doesn't seem to matter if you read them out of sequence as she renews the past in a way to refamilirize you and not make you lost, guessing where who all of the people in San Celina or how they are related. Keep up the good work Ms. Fowler and HURRY with another book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent READ.......1999-08-21

The Goose in the Pond is my favorite of the Benni Harper series. I love Earlene Fowler's characters they are so interesting, fun and real. When Benni discovers a storyteller in the water who is dressed up as Mother Goose, this starts a marvelous mystery. I am so happy that I rediscovered this mystery series. I have also have enjoyed reading Kansas Troubles, Dove in the Window and Mariner's Compass. I love quilts and mysteries so this series have been so wonderful!

Long ago, the alien Quistalian leadership ordered its agent, Lucifer, to conquer Earth. A young Charles Xavier stopped him, but the victory cost him the use of his legs. Now, Professor X claims he has evidence of a massive secret Quistalian invasion plan. To stop it, he orders the X-Men on a series of urgent missions to three abandoned Quistalian facilities-one in the Andes, one in central Africa, and one in Antarctica. The purpose is to seize key pieces of alien technology from the scattered sites and assemble that technology into a defense weapon to stop the Quistalian invasion. But is the invasion a lie? Does Professor Xavier have a different, hidden agenda? Normal human Jeffrey Saunders seems to have the answers to the troubling questions of Professor X's bizarre behavior. But his answers don't make things easier; if anything, they only make things worse for the X-Men. Meanwhile, the countdown for the invasion continues....

5 out of 5 stars Interesting story, great plot.......2005-07-20

When Dr. Xavier and Bobby "Iceman" Drake are attacked along a deserted country road, it is just the start of an adventure. Unknown to Bobby, Dr. Xavier has been kidnapped to an alternate dimension, and a duplicate has been placed in the X-men's midst. The X-men's old nemesis, Lucifer, has planned his revenge for a long time, and his plans include using the X-men to free him. Can Dr. Xavier foil Lucifer's plans? He will need help on this one, help from beyond the X-men.

My eleven-year-old son and I are avid superhero fans, and were glad to come across this novel (NOT graphic novel, by the way). Overall, we found this to be an interesting story, with a great plot that kept you on the edge of your seat, right through to the end. We enjoyed the way the different characters went through their paces, and even liked the villains. Yes, the writing is a bit light for the adult reader, but I still found this to be an enjoyable read. My son and I both loved this book, and both highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and tastful.......2003-01-11

I absolutly LOVED this book! The plotline is creative and exiting, the personalitys of the characters are wonderfully depicted and true to the origanles. I love that some of the story is told from the prof's point of view, because it shows that he is only human. It shows that he hates being pitied for his crippled legs, that he feels sorrow that he has to send his students into the field and can't go with them, that he loves all his students and is as proud of their accomplishments as a father.
This book doesn't have much background info, but it's still a delightful read. Thumbs up!

                  4 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down........2001-06-29

I loved this book. I thought it had a really interesting plot, and was very descriptive. It was nice to see the original X-Men in it, and to see Professor Xavier doing something useful when the team was in trouble-- in the comics at the moment, I get the distinct feeling that he's good at sending the team out, and sitting back and relaxing.

The only problem I had with this book, and the only reason I didn't give it five stars, was that it didn't mention all the newer, fascinating X-Men as well. Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, and my personal favourite, Gambit-- where were they? Even if they weren't in it, it would have been nice for at least a mention, to aknowledge their existence.

Apart from that one little thing I didn't like about it (and that's just me) this book was practically glued to my hands until I put it down. Despite the fact that the character was mentally handicapped, Friedman managed to make Jeffrey Saunders a very three dimensional character. I would reccomend this book to all fans of the original X-Men -- However, if you pick up this book wanting to read about all the new X-Men, I suggest putting it down right away.

                  2 out of 5 stars What...is going on?.......2001-05-01

This was an amusing read, but not one I would really impose on others; the simple problem is that the characters spend too much time reminiscing about past battles than doing anything. This book would have been much better if it was about 100 pages shorter. If you aren't a fan of the X-men with a good deal of back ground knowledge, you won't have a clue what's going on. If you are a big fan of the X-men, then by all means, go ahead and read this, but if not, don't waste your time....

1 out of 5 stars Waaaay too fluffy.......2000-11-14

This is an okay story by itself, but Friedman writes as though he's talking to an audience of autistic 12-year-olds. If you skip every third paragraph, you'd get the same story and eliminate some of the tiresome and repetitive verbosity.

And WHERE THE HELL IS WOLVERINE? Does Friedman think he can ignore the existence of major X-Men characters? Not even mention them?

All in all, I'd tell you to skip this book and look to the new Batman: No Man's Land novelization by Greg Rucka for entertaining superhero fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......1999-12-19

This was nicely written book, with a few errors. There was very litte, if any, mention of the Empire, and at the present time should have controlled most of known space. Another thing is that the evil wizard, Rokur Gepta, used "magic" when the author could have easily said it was the force. Overall, if you a well-versed in Star Wars you should enjoy this book even though you will question some parts. But I do not recommend this book for people who have not read any other Star Wars books.

                                Book Description

Bread lovers and baking enthusiasts who covet the mouthwatering aroma and tantalizing taste of the most esteemed of breads, sourdough, will delight in CLASSIC SOURDOUGHS, an updated version of our essential baker's companion, World Sourdoughs from Antiquity. Author and sourdough aficionado Ed Wood describes the basics of preparing a sourdough culture, and then moves on to building, shaping, and baking these storied loaves from the ground up. En route, Wood mixes hard science with a profound respect for baking traditions, emphasizing the importance of ingredient selection and paying homage to the baking techniques practiced by the ancient Egyptians. Baking, history, chemistry, cultural anthropology—this is truly a sourdough magnum opus, an engaging, authoritative volume that, most importantly, will show you how to prepare these scrumptious breads in your own kitchen.

I have both of Wood's books and give them five stars, I have bout allot of woods Yeasts and had no trouble with the Cultures, Wood gives you all the knowledge that he can give someone with a small Incubator, I have talked with his Wife on the Phone and they always were respectful and Polite well mannered It has been a Pleasure to read his Books and if he did another book I would Purchase it, This book takes You out of the narrow minded thinking of todays Commercial Yeasts and takes You into the Real World of What makes Cultures and the difference a Culture makes in the hole Bread World wide, You cannot artificially create as good of a Bread. The rest is up to You !

4 out of 5 stars Not good enough.......2007-03-30

It is a book with good recipes and very good discussion about sourdough starters but my expectancy was to have more about how to have the starter from scratch and solve problems in beginning the starter.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad.......2007-02-18

...but, does not contain enough information. Following Ed's recipes to the letter- including proofing temps- does not make sour bread, too faint a taste for my liking. And this is using his SF starter...the taste is 'correct' but the intensity isn't there.

An explanation of how to twiddle this is in order.

                                4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference/ primer.......2006-08-31

I own all of Dr. Wood's books. In my opinion this is the best reference, while World Sourdoughs from Antiquity provides interesting historical information on sourdough baking.

I find the recipes quite adequate if one is familiar with making bread at home. If one is new to bread making then I strongly suggest The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book and a loaf for learning contained therein first. Get familiar with baking a yeasted bread before moving to sourdough.

Regardless, since one person's cup of flour weighs 4 ounces and another's 5 ounces I personally prefer recipes by weight. Thus, the volume measurement in Dr. Wood's book versus weight is less desirable for me personally.

I have two cultures from Sourdoughs International -- the original San Francisco and the Russian. I recently activated the Russian as well as a control of flour and water. Both the Russian and the control activated within 24 hours and both had the aroma of a restaurant dumpster in the hot, summer sun.

Following Dr. Wood's directions in this book I washed both the Russian culture and the control. The Russian revived nicely and over the course several successive washings developed into a fragrant, active starter. However, the control did not.

2 out of 5 stars Good Book but be careful if you get any starters.......2005-10-10

I have used the recipes in this book and they work pretty well with the Sourdough starter from King Arthur Flour - I then purchased some starters from Ed Wood and followed the instructions in the book. When they did not revive (they came dried) his basic reply was "tough" even though they claim you will get a refund. Since the book is an infomercial for his starters I would think they would be a little more friendly!!

The pictures of beautiful and powerful women by artists of the Boudoir art movement occupy an important place in the history of twentieth century art. The popularity of Louis Icart led less well-known French artists to create countless engraved works in a style similar to his. This new book resurrects the knowledge about these artists and their work. Beautifully illustrated in full color with hundreds of examples of Boudoir art, the book chronicles "major" and "minor" artists. While the greatest emphasis is on the wonderful Boudoir etchings, the book also covers Boudoir lithographs, which were also quite popular in their day. Invaluable information about the art and artists accompany the photos. Both the French and American titles (when know), the size of the picture's image, the number of copies printed, and the exact wording of copyright declarations whenever known are included. A Price Guide, based on the current economy, will give beginners some perspective, but use it cautiously in this new and unpredictable field.

I found the publication very informative but a little dated. The original was published in 1994 witha reprint in 2005.
Also the photos are not very clear due to their reproduction. Text is very good though.

3 out of 5 stars Basic but out of date.......2005-10-25

This book was published in the mid-1990s and is a collection of articles from Model Airplane News from the previous several years. As such, it's woefully out of date.

While this is an adequate basic book, if you're new to radio control aircraft, buy one of the many newer books on the market. Much, much, much has changed in the past 2-3 years, particularly related to electric motor flight, foam models (as opposed to balsa and ply), ready-to-fly (everything in one box--airplane, transmitter, onboard electronics, and only 30 minutes assembly time), newer stabilizing and control surfaces (winglets on sailplanes and wing droops to prevent tip stalls on powered trainers, for example), microelectronics, computer radios (transmitters), quantum leaps in battery technology (lithium polymer), etc.

The field has changed and this book is too far out of date.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2001-07-01

This book has alot of information for those starting in R/C planes. I thought it was well worth the cost and would reccomend it to anyone starting in R/C planes. Although it is excellent for beginners it also has information that anyone can use such as how to properly set up a bi-plane.

I created my first scale R/C plane recently and found this book invaluable. It covers techniques like panel lines, rivets, hatches, landing gear doors and finishing techniques very clearly and logically. The lack of color pictures was not an issue for me at all. Since the book is a collection of articles, in some cases similar techniques are covered more than once -- for example, there are three articles on "covering with fabric". I liked that, since each dealt with using slightly different materials, and allowed me to choose the approach that I was most comfortable with. I learned to mold fiberglass parts using this book, and have had great success with it. If you're building scale R/C models, this is a great addition to your library. I somehow lost my original and just bought another copy.

This book is a collection of how-to articles from different
authors. The articles are well organized but my biggest complaint is
that there are not any color photos it's all black and white. If you are
looking for how to ideas on painting etc it would be more helpful if the
                                    pictures were in color.

The introduction functions as a mini-course in professional lighting techniques, going far beyond the standard one-overhead-light-per-room and discussing the possibilities of downlighting, wall-washing, and several other important lighting tools. Other chapters are divided into individual rooms, covering general needs (bright lights in the bath, reading lamps in the bedroom) and presenting a variety of unusual solutions.

Most of the ideas involve installation of new lighting fixtures--this is not a book showing you how to make a pretty new lampshade for that old table lamp, but rather one that will show you how to choose among lighting options to achieve very specific effects. One lovely picture, featuring a crystal chandelier, shows tiny recessed spotlights designed to highlight the actual crystals as art, rather than merely a fancy dining room light. Storey obviously has a great understanding of the practical needs for lighting around the home, and her suggestions on task lighting for the office or kitchen are both striking and useful. The last chapter is a practical guide featuring checklists, safety hazards, and explanations of different bulbs and control switches--master this section, and you'll whisk through that maze of light bulbs at the hardware store, knowing exactly which ones you need, and why. --Jill Lightner

This book is a quick read and packed with creative ideas for the homeowner and interior design students. It is not an indepth study of lighting but more of a useful handbook. The organization of the information by room brings the reader right to the point without a lot of information clutter.

I would also recommend this book to computer graphic artists who want the basics of residential lighting for their projects.

This book had a good overview of lighting techniques and ideas; however, all the examples and photos were of homes decorated in a very modern style, not applicable to most people. The same principles employed in Craftsman, western, or other home styles would have been useful.

The book is great, very good script, pictures and general ideas, explaining thoroughly the concept of how lighting in a room works: using general, task and feature lighting effectively. It lacks though exact measurements for placing lights at certain distances from walls, only mentioning, for example, that distance from wall depends on height of ceiling.
                                        Summary: good one to have.

I bought this book just before moving to my first owned little apartment. This is a beautiful book with many practical solutions for lighting. Well illustrated pictures with great ideas. I've applied some of the ideas to my small apartment. Besides, the beautiful pictures also provide me with some wonderful ideas for interior design. It has only 104 pages, hope there were more pages.

I believe the book is now out of print, but if you're lucky you might be able to pick it up at a comic book shop which is where I got mine. This book is FANTASTIC!!! Definitely one of the best fantasy art books out there. Great colors, excellent depictions of Dawn - the fiery redhead with one eye showing *grins* and some of the most imaginative and creative art pieces you'll ever see!

Even the backgrounds are incredibly detailed, with everything from dragons to architecture to detailed walls and textures. He really sets the mood in every piece he does.

Excellent work of art. Absolutely excellent.

The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner is essential to any JML collector, but also an awesome item for anyone who appreciates the beauty of art. The softcover edition of this collection makes it affordable to the big fans with small bank accounts. Looking through the eyes of Joe, one will see a woman as a work of art or poetry and not a piece of meat. The colors are vibrant, the details are lucid, and the annotations throughout truly give insight into the mind of the artist, who he is, how he feels, and what inspires him.

Edited by JML and Eva Hopkins, with special thanks to Zeke Feldhaus, The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner is cleverly divided into sections. It begins with a nice introduction by Richard Kane Ferguson, then proceeds to a fabulous story by JML about the first artbook he bought which reveals how his taste for art began when he was just a boy. After that, we see exquisite images of Dawn, Death, and Dark Ivory along with many others (women, men, and vampires, oh my!) throughout the Love, Hate, Heaven and Hell sections. Then we move on to About the Art, comments by JML (about art, of course) which include images from the creation of the Dawn: Three Tiers #1 cover from its birth/sketch stage to the gorgeous finished painting. And of course, no collection of art would be complete without an About the Artist segment (with pictures). But wait, that's not all, there is also a two-page spread with photographs of Dawn Lookalikes from DragonCon, some Dawn collectors items, and a few other odd and end pictures. This definitely adds a personal touch to the entire thing. Well, if you've read this far, you must be interested, so what are waiting for? Get your copy today.

WOW! If one could give out 10 stars on the 5 star scale this would be the book to score that high.

More that just a detailed, beautiful look into one of America's leading illustrators, this is an insightful prose into the mind of that artist. Here is the successor of the great artists of the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Done in a style that is very today, and very much his own.

An amazingly well produced book, with quality throughout. From the paper, the binding, to the wonderful reproductions, everything is top notch. This is an art book you would expect to pay two to three times more for.

I feel this is a chance to glimpse into tomorrows major gallery artist, before he explodes on the scene. Live a little dangerously and venture into some unknown areas. ENJOY!
