Book Description

Homicide My Own resides in that strange and fascinating land between mystery fiction and detective fiction, adjoined with the mystique of philosophy and Native American customs. It's a story of two slog-bottom cops from Spokane, Washington, who are assigned to what appears to be a routine mission: They're to go to an Indian reservation on the Northwest coast and pick up a man who's being held for kidnapping a teenaged girl. Once there, however, one of the cops (given the unusual moniker of "Odd") becomes obsessed with a decades-old murder, the only unsolved murder in the island's history, and he really doesn't want to head back to Spokane until he's found some resolution. His partner, Quinn, the acid-tongued menopausal wife of a decent and boring pharmacist (and the novel's narrator) finds Odd's behavior rather amusing at first, but then finds it to be much more than amusing. In an intriguing character study, Anne Argula has developed a novel that not only forces a reader to keep turning the pages; it goes so far as to force the reader to look at life - and death - in a new and uncharacteristic way. Pick this book up at your own risk. You may find yourself having lost not only the next few hours but also your sense of confidence in, as one might say, "the world as you know it."

5 out of 5 stars More, please, Ms. Argula.......2007-10-09

I read this book last December and liked it enough to pre-order the second book, "Walla Walla Suite," which is just as good. The slightly supernatural twists in both books set them somwhat apart from the run-of-the-mill PI stories. And Quinn, a menopausal cop, is a unique creation, especially in her insights into the male mind and psyche. A woman who understands (although she may not like it) that sometimes men think (NOT!)with the wrong parts of their anatomy. A fascinating character in so many ways. So, yeah, like li'l Oliver once said, "Please, may I have some more?" - Tim Bazzett

5 out of 5 stars Quirky but loveable.......2007-08-22

This little book is very different from the run-of-the-mill mystery (which I also love) The characters are quirky and interesting. There is a bit of "woo-woo" so if you don't like that, don't read this. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars EDGAR nominee.......2006-01-30

Homicide My Own has just been nominated for an Edgar as Best Paperback Original Novel. The Edgar Award is the Oscar for mystery writers. It's presented by the Mystery Writers of America, a prestigious group of writers, reviewers, and publishers. This is a wonderful and well-deserved honor for Anne Argula.

5 out of 5 stars ...and now for something completely different........2006-01-06

Quinn is a grouchy 40+ year-old woman suffering of deadly hot flashes. Odd is a 20+-year old Swede who seems to be the reincarnation of a murder victim. Quinn and Odd are saddled with Charlie, his young girlfriend Stacey and her mother Gail, while trying to solve an old murder. The result is a strange, funny, and highly unusual mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This!.......2005-07-26

One of the best mysteries I've read for a long time, and I read a lot of mysteries. It's genuinely and convincingly offbeat (not "offbeat" for the sake of being "offbeat") and so well-plotted neither my husband or I could lay it down. The characters are real and amusing at the same time. It would make a great movie - some of the scenes are laugh-out-loud but touching at the same time.

Book Description

Tanith Lee concludes her compelling Secret Books of Venus quartet with a haunting and suspenseful tale set in her brilliantly reimagined alternate Venice. Centuries into the future, the sunken city of Venus has been salvaged from beneath the sea and rebuilt there under a dome, where it is supported by a vast network of computers that regulate weather, noise, and the most precious undersea commodity of all-air.

It is here that a macabre experiment takes place. Conducted by geneticists at the university, it consists of the resurrection of two lost souls, both murdered in their times: Jula, a first-century gladiatrix, and Cloudio Del Nero, the eighteenth-century composer who met his fate in Lee's acclaimed first volume of the Venus series. An unexplained catastrophe occurs, claiming several lives. Was it merely an accident, computer failure, or has the experiment unleashed an airborne virus? Or is there an even more sinister danger afoot, a force from beyond that threatens the survival of Venus itself? To answer these questions, a traveler from the surface is forced to confront mysteries in his own past that have remained buried, and to reveal the connection that ties him to the unavenged spirits wreaking havoc on the doomed city.

5 out of 5 stars Venus in Glory.......2004-02-27

"Venus Preserved" is full of gorgeous writing, strong characterizations, and a suspenseful plot. Plus, it stars Tanith Lee's first lead African-descended character, the enigmatic musician Picaro. It's a weird mixture of science fiction thriller, dark fantasy and Biblical Vision, threaded through with Shakespearan allusions. The terrible, wonderful face of God appears in faux-Venus (Venice) preserved under the water, in the midst of scientific experimentation. Dreams, horrific and beautiful imagery, bits of history are all thrown in for a majestic (tragic, triumphant) ending.

4 out of 5 stars Fine tale but ..........2003-11-20

Venus lies under a dome beneath the sea as a tremendous lure for surface visitors. Permanent residence is restricted, but tourists are encouraged. Powerful computers run the city controlling climate to include virtual flora and fauna.

Scientists work experiments using DNA remnants of dead souls. These geneticists bring back to life first century gladiator Jula from the DNA remains that an archeological excavation led by Flayd discovered. Also brought back to life is eighteenth century musician Cloudio, both of whom find they feel disrupted and more comfortable with weird flashbacks to their previous lives. Meanwhile a surface musician Picaro arrives at Venus and meets Flayd, who is convinced that something catastrophic is being conducted under the auspices of the city leaders including the computers. As calamities begin to happen and the city is quarantined with no exit or entry, Flayd?s theory seems more realistic. Soon, this quartet manipulated by an entity that makes Machiavelli look like kindergarten, is the last hope to stop the imminent final disaster from taking place

The five key characters (the heroic foursome plus the computer) seem genuine with personalities that in many ways are symbolic of the four forces of nature. These individuals hook the reader wanting to learn more about Flayd?s conspiracy theory. However, that is the weakness of the fourth Venus novel as there is only vague references to a massive conspiracy, but no revealing of who and why especially by the city government who would appear to be biting their nose to spite their face. Thus a potentially powerful futuristic science fiction novel with a strong cast that grips the reader drowns by the ending.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not her best.......2003-11-18

I like the three previous volumes of _The Secret Books of Venus_ very much. _Venus Preserved_, while good, is not quite up to the same standard.

The story takes place in a Venus (Venice) of the future, a colorful, history-laden city reconstructed in an undersea dome. It is mostly for tourists. Permanent residents must be specially invited. The setting is a charming mix of eras, with the characters living in Renaissance palaces with 18th-century furnishings, eating in Victorian restaurants, and dressing in the clothes of any era they fancy. Venus is permeated with discreet but powerful computer technology; it is built into the doors, the walls, everywhere.

The main characters are Picaro, a successful black musician newly arrived in Venus, and Jula, a 1st-century AD gladiatrix resurrected from her DNA. Both are well fleshed out. They have many ?flashbacks? to their former lives (Picaro?s dramatic and fateful life in this body, Jula?s in her 1st-century incarnation). The flashbacks do not feel like interruptions and they explain the attitudes of these two characters.

Less well drawn, but equally important to the plot, are Flayd the archaeologist (who had excavated Jula?s tomb), and Cloudio del Nero, an 18th-century musician also resurrected using his DNA. Flay?s character is pretty well drawn, but there is a sense of important past influences that are not sufficiently explained. Del Nero is not a real character at all, but a symbol.

These four characters probably represent the four elements.

The real weakness of this book is its plot. Flayd is certain that some conspiracy is afoot, greatly aided by the omnipresent computers. The city government closes off all further exit and entry. Flayd insists this is so some ?experiment? can take place. Contacts between these four characters are thoroughly manipulated, and their conversations are all probably monitored. Increasingly disastrous events take place, which make it clear that Flayd is correct. _Venus Preserved_ has an apocalyptic ending, which I won?t reveal.

All this is dramatic, the ending is showy; but the plot itself, the events, have no purpose. The plot could be called the workings of Fate, since this always a fantasy fallback. But when references are made to an elaborate, expensive government conspiracy and minor bureaucrats are shown doing their part, I expect some disclosure of who is behind the conspiracy and what their goals are. Lee provides no such disclosure. There seems to be no sensible goal the government could possibly have. The minor bureaucrat characters not only have been told very little, they refuse to understand what they see (and what is obvious to the reader). As the book goes on, the major characters become less characters and more symbols. By the end, this creates a lack of emotional response in the reader.

So the book has an apocalyptic ending? Who cares? It?s like the ?thunderstorms? Venus puts on for the tourists?preannounced, flashy to watch, but not personally involving.

This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen

This is a well written book that makes understanding your hormones and fertility logical and reasonable. I bought this book on a recomendation from my Sister In-Law and I am so glad I did. Side effects of birth control pills can be hard on a woman's body both physically and mentally. This book provides lots of information for understanding the ins and outs of fertility. I have used it succesfully in both avoiding and achieving pregnancy.

For the owners of America's 70 million domesticated kitties: the definitive book on feline psychology

Renowned cat counselor Vicky Halls has dedicated her career to helping hundreds of cat owners to better understand their pets. Why do some cats soil in the house, behave aggressively, or pull out their own fur? In this, her first book, Halls answers these questions and covers a broad range of other issues, including:
o The pitfalls of a multi-cat household and how to avoid them
o How to live with—and calm—a “Scaredy Cat”
o The destructive results of “idle paws” and how to put an end to feline vandalism
o Bizarre and embarrassing habits and what they mean
o How to tell if your cat's problems mirror your own

Filled with fascinating case studies (both professional and personal), amusing anecdotes, and practical advice, Cat Confidential explores the hidden relationships between cats and people and reveals the innermost secrets of the feline psyche. Practical and illuminating, this is a must-read for any cat lover who ever wished Kitty could speak.

            4 out of 5 stars Good read!.......2006-09-16

I agree that this book does not give many solutions and does assume that all cat owner's have a cat flap (I do not, but I am American), but it does provide entertaining stories and has made me question some of my presumptions about my cats' behavior. Overall I would recommend this book to cat lovers who are intrigued by their companions' personalities!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, entertaining but mostly useless.......2006-07-26

It's not that this book isn't good, it's just that it isn't really all that great at explaining what to actually *do* to help correct some cat behaviors. The anecdotes are interesting, entertaining even, and the author is likable enough, but 95% of the book just assumes that the cat owner has a cat door and lets their cats out or other cats in that creates much of the problems or assumes that if multi-cat households aren't working that one of the cats should go (which to me would be a last resort after all other options are exhausted). I almost felt bad after reading this book for *not* letting my cats out, even though every vet I've been to says it's best if kitties are kept indoors. Maybe it's cultural since all of the stories and information were based on cats in England who presumably spent much or most time outside. I mainly got this book hoping for some insight into how to deal with my two cats that hate each other. I read through the whole first half of the book getting to the chapter specifically on this issue and was hopeful for some good information, but again, it was more stories about neighbor cats coming through the cat door or needing to get rid of one of the existing cats - not quite what I needed. Perhaps someone else would find this useful.

Still, if you are interested in reading in very general terms about how cats think, then this book is worth a read. I'm glad I read it, and I even enjoyed it, I just didn't find it all that helpfu.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST for all present and future cat people.......2005-10-18

...even if you've been an 'owner' for like, EVER and even the chronologically challenged (kids)(and their family) and anyone longing to give nature's most perfect pet a loving home, will LOVE this book and appreciate it's very palletable advice and inspiring ideas. Unlike your standard 'dry' cat manuals on the market, this one is punctuated with true stories from the cat shrink author's past cases and her own personal experiences which serve to illustrate the points she's making and infuse the book with a warm, gentle, human touch. Vicky's charming personality really comes through and her colloquial writing style makes this a very easy and compelling read. The small collection of her cat family photos in the center add a nice touch. There's quite a few mentions of the 'u' word (urine),(guess it goes with the territory), so you probably don't want to read this while eating! This book will take you from kittenhood through to the elderly/disabled phase and beyond into coping with bereavement. Vicky will make you think, observe and understand our feline friends better. I'm not saying this is the only cat book to get (you won't find a list of exactly which houseplants are poisonous to cats) but it's a definite must for your collection.

            Book Description

Travel to the pueblos of Arizona and New Mexico and meet 102 families that make beautiful, traditional pottery. Meet the potters face to face in beautiful color photographs of them with their work, and enjoy interviews with the artists, branches of 43 family trees. Seventeen pueblos along the Rio Grande and in the rising mesas and bluffs to river's west, have a long tradition of making pottery vessels for practical and ceremonial use. This book introduces 554 modern potters in relation to the family members with whom they learned their craft. New forms and designs are displayed to demonstrate the evolving nature of their art.

4 out of 5 stars Pueblo Pottery Families.......2007-05-13

The book provided insight into the relationships of the potters on the different pueblos. We like the book. It is inexpensive. We will have it available when we visit the different pueblos.

            2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2003-02-03

Unfortunately, this book promises a lot more than it delivers. For example, in its preface, it mentions several families of potters at Acoma named Lewis not related to Lucy Lewis, but they are not even mentioned. Even the section on the family of Lucy Lewis is barely 2 pages. The author for the most part barely skims the surface. I desperately wanted to like this book, but the more I read it, the more I saw was lacking. For one thing, it seriously needed a much better editor. It reads like a grade school student's social studies report, and it is filled with typos, the worst being that many of the photo captions are wrong because the photos were flipped and the captions were not corrected. A major disappointment for the price. Fortunately I bought it in paperback! It did have some good information, but it could have and should have had much more.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT resource for those interested in pottery........1999-01-04

This book is an excellent resource if you are interested in collecting pottery from all peublos as well as a variety of families. Although not quite as in depth as Rick Dillingmham's Fourteen Families, she does mention many families that he does not.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for any pottery collector and artist.......2007-09-26

this is a beautiful book the the pictures in the book are so vivid and colorful, it would make a wonderful addition to any library or it would make a great coffee table book!

5 out of 5 stars visual journey into the past.......2007-07-20

I was impressed with the display groupings presented and the journey of the authors beginnings of his collections and the knowledge he aquired along the way. He gave good advice to new collectors. I open it daily and alway see something I missed. It's a great book to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of every pueblo's pottery.......2005-08-10

I'd been looking for a book like this for ages. It goes through every pueblo's pottery, describing the special characteristics of each, and talks about the important potters in each pueblo.

This is very well written in an easy going, non-snobish style, instantly increasing your depth of knowledge in southwestern pottery. The photographs are excellent and plentiful, giving many diverse examples from each pueblo/region/era.

Highly recommended for those new to collecting. I gave a copy to my parents in New Mexico, and even though they had been doing a bit of collecting for years, they have a much better understanding of the history of some of the pottery sitting on their shelves. They love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start.......2003-02-27

This is an excellent book for both the beginner or serious student of Southwestern Pottery. It gives examples of all styles, types, and designs, making it easy for anyone to understand what makes each Pueblo's pottery unique. Perhaps not as "in depth" as some others, this book is easily the best book out there today as far as explaining and illustrating the basics. It really is an indispensable guide and reference book. The authors are regular guys rather than scholars, so it is easy and enjoyable to read, and filled with great photos of their quite amazing collections. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to begin learning about Southwestern Pottery.

5 out of 5 stars A must for pottery collectors and fans.......2002-01-26

An excellent introduction and reference on Southwestern pottery. The authors cover each of the major styles and pueblos, with history, anecdotes, and great color pictures.

They also have a delightful approach to collecting, emphasizing pieces that teach something or appeal to them, rather than perfect (and expensive!) museum-quality work.

            Book Description

The Zuni Indians of western New Mexico have been making beautiful pottery for over a century. In this intimate and personal book fourteen contemporary Zuni potters tell us in their own words about the traditions and techniques of their craft—how they collect and handle clay, how they fire and decorate pots, and how they learn, develop, teach, and adapt their art. Some of these potters have learned in the traditional way from their mothers, but many have also taken advantage of modern mobility and education to learn at school and by visiting museum collections of pueblo pottery. Their work and their lives combine tradition and innovation.

Pottery is a traditional female art among the pueblos, but five of the potters included in this book are men. One potter uses an electric kiln at home but travels to workshops in the midwest with sheep manure so that she can demonstrate traditional firing techniques. All of them are as generous in sharing their stories in this book as they are in working cooperatively to develop their craft.

An intimate, personal look at contemporary Zuni potters who tell in their own words the traditions and techniques of their craft.

I could not put this book down! A well written and extremely discriptive story! I felt every emotion!

I really enjoyed this book. The author described every moment in her life with such detail, it felt as if I were there with her. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants inspiration.

This book desperately wanted to be "Having Our Say" by the Delaney Sisters. Perhaps, if it had an editor, it would have been. As it stands, it provides a historical perspective of African American Deaf culture, but its text does not flow very smoothly.

that I found this ... well ... boring? I suppose, on the one hand, I should be glad that Ms. Wright had a relatively uneventful and happy life, despite growing up both black and disabled in the mid-20th century rural south; but, frankly, happy and uneventful lives don't make for very interesting reading.
