Great Desk Reference.......2007-08-19
The first chapter of descriptions and comparisons between mystery and suspense was a little redundent in places. I've only got through the mystery half because that is what I've been having trouble with. If you're not a regular mystery reader and need to add mystery without spending time analysing the greats, this is the book you need. If you are already an experience mystery reader/writer and need more suspense, I'd bet the suspense half would be equally as good. Mystery and suspense are the bones of a plot line and genre/characterization is the setting and the meat of the story.
A lot of BANG for your buck!.......2007-08-03
I love this book! If you have a small budget and know that you want to write mystery or suspense novels, this is THE writing instruction book for you. It is a concise 191 pages (even has an index!), but it is filled with useful information. This is not a book that focuses on how to write better sentences or prose: there are other books for that. This is a book on plot structure that even seasoned writers would find useful to help strengthen their stories: a nice summation of the key elements to consider when constructing the plot. Some writing books are so large, it'd take a decade to fully digest and utilize the information: This book will get you up and surging forward right away. There are even checklists to keep you on track as few of us can keep numerous facts in mind simultaneously.
The first section focuses on the mystery novel. The second, on the suspense/thriller. The last third is on the general aspects of the novel and getting published, which is not as useful as the first two sections. Ms. Wheat uses numerous examples from published novels to demonstrate the plot techniques she outlines. I am excited to discover this book, as I am certain my next novel will have a stronger ending from studying the suspense techniques she outlines. Ms. Wheat's guidelines will not stifle your creativity; instead, it will help channel your idea to it's maximum effectiveness.
You really get a lot of bang for your buck. I would buy this, not get it from the library. It is well laid-out, with useful bold headings. You will want to keep it at your side when you plot your future blockbuster. Sworn to Defend.
An absolute keeper.......2007-02-12
The title hooked me, and it just got better after that. As a writer of fiction, I have a stack of "how-to" books on my shelf, some of which have been helpful, others not so much. But this one has the clearest explanation of such things as story arc, the novel styled as a classic myth, how to (and how not to) handle an ending. Better yet, not only is the book filled with excellent information, it's written in an entertaining style. And the examples that Ms. Wheat uses are from books that most of us have read and authors most of us recognize--not pages and pages of dry-as-dust "classic" novels.
If you like to read suspense and/or mystery (and she makes the distinction clear in the first chapter), this book will make your reading more pleasurable as you begin to appreciate the things your favorite author does. And if you want to write in those genres, hurry to order the book, then commit it to memory.
Start with this book by Carolyn Wheat.......2006-09-22
Carolyn Hart, Mystery Maitresse, suggested this book to me. She was right. I was gratified to discover just how many things I am already doing correctly without any understanding of the structure provided by this book. Ms. Carolyn Wheat provides valuable insight into a great many other issues. Yes, this book will provide guidelines for the next several weeks. Thank you.
Finally A Book on Mystery & Suspense!.......2006-07-27
Pros: A great book on how to craft mystery & suspense.
Cons: If you don't care about suspense, then this book isn't for you. But I'd say you're crazy.
Thoughts: There don't seem to be many writing books dedicated to the specific techniques of genre. The book is split in two parts. The first half is mystery, and the second half is suspense. The author does a good job of explaining how the techniques used can often be very different. The suspense half of the book is just plain old Good Storytelling, and the tricks explained in that section would work for almost any story. Who doesn't want a suspensful story?
Summary: I wish more books on storytelling were like this. Just buy it.

What fun! You'll Love It!.......2006-02-23
The books in this series are a delightful romp through the ancient countryside and courts with Arthur and his irresistable dog, Cabal. Everyone is there: Merlin, Gwinevere, the dragons, Morgan le Fay. They escape close calls, fight deadly battles, celebrate victories together. The books are an ingenious mixture of adventure and realism, the landscapes and times being expertly drawn. But what makes them so charming, what makes them page-turners is the reader's involement with the narrator, Cabal, Arthur's loyal dog. Smart and courageous, outspoken and humble, Cabal embodies the best of all dogs. If you love a kid, buy him the book. If you love dogs or history or adventure, buy yourself the book.
it's a good book.......2003-06-13

If you bake, but making bread intimidates you, Beth Hensperger's Bread Made Easy is the perfect choice for expanding your skills. It gives all the basics a beginner needs about technique, equipment, and ingredients, in the clearest, most reassuring way.
Hensperger certainly knows about baking bread--this is her eighth book on the subject. This time, she starts with "Baking School," a comprehensive section covering what pans to use, why bottled water is best, and how to use various kinds of yeast. She describes 12 types of wheat flour as well as flour made from 8 other grains. Then Hensperger explains proper techniques for kneading, rising, and forming loaves, including more than 65 color photos. The eight master recipes start beginners off making a simple unkneaded Batter Bread, then go on to progressively more demanding white bread, egg doughs, whole wheat bread, flatbread, rustic country loaves, and yeasted coffee cakes. Each recipe is broken into five key steps, including cooling and storage. To encourage you, Hensperger gives variations on each master recipe, suggesting you make them all before moving on to the next type of bread. Progressing from challah to a cinnamon-sugar-filled egg-dough spiral loaf, hamburger buns, elegantly twisted dinner rolls, and a flat, foccacia-like Stuffed Onion Pretzel topped with poppy seeds makes this a rewarding exercise. Anyone who bakes will appreciate the clear, easy-to-use format of this book, and find it a reasonably complete and compact reference work as well as a source for seemingly foolproof recipes. --Dana Jacobi

Inexpensive and not even worth the low price.......2006-12-29
I've made a lot of good bread lately even though I'm a beginner. But the 4 recipes I've tried from this book have all failed If this had been the only book I'd purchased on making bread I'd have stopped trying by now. But every recipe of Beatrice Ojakangas has turned out to be wonderful bread. I'd recommend her books if you want good bread. Should add, I don't know Beatrice and have no agenda in recommending her books. Each recipe from "Bread Made Easy" has ended up in my compost heap. Very disappointed
Great source of recipes .......2006-03-17
The author says it's as good as a class in breadmaking-except for an instructor to talk to she's right! The recipes are easy to follow and arranged in order of difficulty. Plus each chapter starts with a basic recipe and then adds variations to dress it up! Try the Egg bread with cinnamon-my kids love it.
Excellent instructional book!.......2004-03-04
This book exceeded my expectations. It explains everything you need to know to bake all types of bread, including ingredients, supplies, techniques and tips. The author is very knowledgable and takes you through the book from basic to more advanced breads. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn the art of baking breads!!!
A solid first bread book for the novice.......2002-04-24
I finally got up the nerve to begin the task of bread baking about six months ago. After some research, I decided on this book because it is for beginners and the book methodically moves from easiest to more difficult. Each master recipe in a chapter is accompanied by variations on the same theme so if you make the master and a variation, then you probably have the skills to move on. The directions are simple, there is a chapter on basic bread knowledge and they the breads taste great. As of this writing, I have baked pretty much all the master recipes and a variant. I have not tried the sweet dough chapters (of which there are 2 or 3 I think). I thought these chapters are more special occasion breads rather than everyday so I skipped them. IMHO, one sweet dough chapter would have been fine and this is why I didnt give it 5 stars. Im sure they are excellent recipes. I have graduated to Peter Reinhart's Bread Baker's Apprentice which is a more serious treatise and also geared to novices. Look for my review on that when I have baked through it a bit. Bread Made Easy is not expensive and I recommend it as a first timer's book. Hope this helps someone.
Good book for starters..........2002-01-03
I am a beginning bread baker. I was attracted to this book because it is targeted to beginning bread bakers and has helped me learn and reinforce the basics, and it introduced me to a handful of basic bread types. I liked the small size of it and I approached it as a course that I could finish and get through, therefore giving me a good sense of accomplishment. One of the things I especially like is that she gives variations of the different basic bread types at the end of each chapter.
There are a few relatively minor inconsistencies in it but they are not major.
I recommend it as an intro to bread baking.

pictures too detailed.......2007-07-29
The pictures in this coloring book were too detailed and small for the children (fourth graders) to enjoy coloring. However, it gave good exerpts with good information and facts underneath each picture.
We bought this twice. .......2007-01-25
My little history afficionado loved this book. When he finished coloring it we got another. It gives an accurate depiction of the uniforms worn by all the various participants. Each illustration is accompanied by a description of who wore it and of what color each of the various components are. It is really well done. My son does bemoan the lack of Native Americans who were active participants in the American Revolution but are not depicted in the book.
fun for kids- but not exactly accurate.......2007-01-10
This book gives kids a fun look at how army uniforms may have looked at the time, but I feel like they didn't make a big effort at making it very accurate. Colonial soldiers at the beginning of the war didn't have uniforms at all, which was never mentioned, as well as a few other facts.

Book Description
The discovery in the Judaean desert between 1951 and 1961 of documentary papyri from the period of the Bar-Kochba Revolt in the early second century opened for the first time a window on the lives of Jewish lay people on the periphery of Judaea in a critical period of history. By the year 2000 these texts were published in full. Of particular interest was the light they shed on the interplay of Jewish, Greek and Roman law in the Roman provinces of Judaea and Arabia. In the current volume leading scholars from Europe, America and Israel debate the major questions raised by these texts and offer new insights into the material and its implications.
Readership: Scholars of Jewish history, Roman and Hellenistic history, legal history and papyrology, as well as Christian biblical history and women's studies.

Book Description
Even though we've recreated the larger size lunch boxes from the seventies, it was still a struggle to contain Sergio Aragonés' `cast of thousands` on these panels. While we tried our best, unfortunately modern technology still has not come up with a portable cheese-dip warmer, and the FDA ruled against a mulch compartment.
Customer Reviews:
Well, It's a Lunch Box.. With Groo On It..........2002-06-13
This is a great metal lunchbox for the Groo collector. It's just the right size to hold Groo things, or your lunch, if you want. It's the standard lunchbox size, and doesn't come with a Thermos (the only fault), but does have a unique Groo postcard inside. The postcard has a glossy print of the main Groo characters one one side, and postcard-stuff on the other (what else would you call it?)
The handle is black, with Dark Horse Comics engraved on it, and the latch is made of sturdy metal. The front has the Groo logo, with Groo eating a cooked boar while an army watches, scared. The back is the same Groo characters round-up as the postcard. The sides are a long Sergio-style cartoon with Groo chasing off a whole bunch of people.
Since they don't make Groo stuff in mass numbers like they do for other comic books (which is both a good thing and a bad thing), collectables like this lunchbox should be savored. They are getting harder and harder to find, so getting one soon might be a good idea.

Book Description
American legal history is traditionally viewed as a series of schools of thought or landmark court decisions, not as the work of individuals. Here, N. E. H. Hull tells the pivotal story of American jurisprudence through two of its most influential shapers: Karl Llewellyn, father of legal realism, poet, and mercurial romantic, and Roscoe Pound, iron-willed leader of sociological jurisprudence. These theorists adapted the legal profession to the changing needs of twentieth-century America.
Through meticulous archival research, Hull shows how the intellectual battles of the day took place against a network of private and public relationships and demonstrates how Pound's and Llewellyn's ideas of jurisprudence sprang from a kind of intellectual bricolage, the pragmatic assemblage of parts rather than the development of a unified whole, that is peculiarly American. Humorous, engaging, and provocative, Roscoe Pound and Karl Llewellyn uncovers the roots of American jurisprudence in the lives of two of its most compelling figures.
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Work for Students of American Jurisprudence.......2006-02-04
This is simply one of the most valuable books ever written on American jurisprudence. Professor Hull has built on a series of outstanding articles to produce a richly textured picture of the relationship between Roscoe Pound and Karl Llewellyn over the course of more than than thirty years. Her approach is highly interesting: focusing not only on the written statements of each protagonist (which she handles with uncommon insight and skill), but also on the private discourse in letters and meetings between them. Hence, her reliance upon "bricolage--the pragmatic search for ideas and concepts to explain the meaning of law in the American experience.
Hull begins with a solid chapter on the old formalism against which both Pound and LLewellyn were reacting. Next, she develops first Pound's views on "sociological jurisprudence," and then the purported clash between it and Llewellyn's assertions re "legal realism." Along the way we learn quite a deal about both Pound and Llewellyn as individuals, as well as their abundant writings. A number of familiar names pop up along the way: Hohfeld; Frank; Fuller; Ehlrich; Cardozo; and a whole slew of legal realists. The action takes place at Harvard Law School, Yale, Chicago, and Columbia.
Hull continues her discussion long after Pound/Llewellyn squabble in the 1930's, all the way to the deaths of both men in 1962 and 1966. She effectively dissects their continuing printed and informal dialogue, as well as their decisive impact on the field of American jurisprudential thought. The research is superb; the analysis crisp and focused. While it took ten years to write this book, the wait was worth it for the light it sheds on an important relationship.
The Law Concerning Free Speech from Two Experts........2005-06-27
Legal Realism maintains that legar reasoning must take into account social policy, common sense, and experience. In the area of free speech creating a system of law which operates in robotic fashion, failing to take account of context, nuance, history, and the harms that speech can cause to disempowered people.
Hate words are not primarily racial jokes, slurs, or mean "comments" (that seems to be a pattern), there are nasty words used against whites as well. 'Spik,' 'kike,' 'wop,' 'dummy,' 'idiot,' 'Polock' all cause extreme mental and emotional hurt. Of course, we all all familiar with the N word, but the blacks use it the most to describe one of their own who won't do right, 'nigger.'
The play, 'Green Grow the Lilacs,' which was turned into the musical, "Oklahoma!, was spiked full of the N word, as were many of Mark Twain stories and nothing was said about "hate" or racial slurs. These were literary works and thus immune.
In the town of Skokie, Illinois, outside Chicago, where many Jewish people live, there was a Nazi march showing swastikas and Nazi uniforms (probably used the Nazi salute, as do the KKK groups, a lot of which are from Chicago and places unknown). The KKK do not go to predominantly black towns to show their allegiance to our right of being a white country. At least, we started out that way, then the blacks multiplied staring from the age when a girl had her first period so that her mother could draw welfare on the illigetimate child, over and over and over. Now, there are more of them than us; the joke is that the Latinos have infiltrated this country and they are the majority!
Hate speech is not merely unpleasant or offensive. Sometimes it can be the truth couched in words not at all offensive, the truth finally being brought to the attention of anyone who will listen.
Bigots suffer when their narrow, categorical thinking and expressions etches a little deeper. If you observe the way blacks treat the whites they think are dominant, you will understand why there are more of us speaking out -- and will continue to. They take care of their own to the detriment of the rights of others, because they are the wrong color. It happens here in Knoxville, Tennessee, every day with the bus system. Racial abuse can come from either or both sides. It's not the whites now doing the abusing; the blacks have been put into positions to take their hate out on little old ladies who are just the wrong color. They use the worst language and have nasty minds and mouths. They don't care who they hurt.
So, to conclude, the blacks are not being abused. The Jews are not being abused. The tables have been turned, and now the whites are suffering for a few bad speakers and the elderly are fair game to hurt and harm in any way they can.
