Now she is a homicide victim's widow-frightened, desperate and trapped in a web of murderous greed that reaches out from a time of unrelenting terror. And the dark, deadly secrets that hold Else prisoner threaten to ensnare Beau and new partner Sue Danielson as well-and to rock their world in ways they never dreamed possible.

Love JP Beaumont mysteries! .......2007-09-12
Every time I get a JP Beaumont book to read I enjoy it. This book is no different. JA Jance does a great job at describing everything. I look forward to getting the other books that I haven't read yet. I hope she never stops writing about him. She makes him a real person.
as always excellent stories.......2007-03-27
J A Jance as always produces excellent stories and this is no different than the rest, I always look forward to a new book from this author.
J.P. IS ON THE CASE.......2000-08-16
J.A. Jance is back in form with this J.P. Beaumont gem. There is a new partner to work with, grisly murders to solve, nazi war criminals and helicopter chases. What more could you want?
Not the best Jance book.......2000-07-19
J.A. Jance is a prolific and reliable author, but this book is not up to her usual standards. The murders in this book are brutal and both follow the same m.o. A person is burned to death and each finger and toe are severed. J.P. Beaumont and his new partner, Sue Danielson, do enough investigating to make a connection with a Nazi past and some missing gold from a German death camp. Perhaps in an effort to infuse something more exotic into this series, Ms. Jance sacrifices some of the basics of good writing. There are indeed, many unanswered questions at the end. I began to wonder if I had drifted off somewhere in the reading process! We do catch the usual glimpses of the attractive environs of Seattle and J.P. Beaumont is more human and more attractive as a recovering alcoholic rather than a man who reaches for a McNaughton's every time the going gets tough.
Ripped off!.......2000-03-22
Usually books in the J.P. Beaumont series written by J.A. Janceare thoughtful, well-planned, and exciting. Lying in Wait is a hugedisappointment! How did she ever throw that ending together? So many unanswered questions. The whole ending was one big unanswered question. For example: 1) Where has Nazi Hans Gebhardt been for 30 years? Why did it take 30 years for this plot to happen? How did he connect up with Denise Whitney; what was their relationship? Did he actually kill his own son and why? None of this is ever explained and this is involving only one of the characters! 2) Who was the bigamist? What is that whole thing about? It was alluded to and never explained. 3) What happened to the gold? Did the Jewish Nazi hunters really steal it back or was it still in Gunther's house? It was all left up in the air. So unsatisfying for the reader. 4)Why were the other Nazis tortured and killed? Should we assume Hans did that or was it Erika or who? And why did it even happen - all because of the gold? More unanswered questions. I hope Jance never writes anything this ambiguous ever again!

Years ago, Lt. Uhura befriended a diplomat from Eeiauo, the land of graceful, cat-like beings. The two women exchanged songs and promised never to reveal their secret.
Now the U.S.S. Enterprise is orbiting Eeiauo in a desperate race to save the inhabitants before a deadly plague destroys them. Download Description
A plague has been ravaging the planet Eeiauo, a world of cat-like beings, and the Enterprise has come to try to contain it before it kills all the Eeiauoans or spreads to other planets. Years earlier, Uhura had befriended a diplomat from Eeiauo, and the two women had exchanged songs as an intimate bond, swearing never to reveal them to anyone. But the only hope for a cure may lie in the song given to Uhura, and they must penetrate its layers of mystery if there's any hope for Eeiauo, or the Enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
very good trek adventure.......2007-01-20
only thing that kept it from being rated a 5 was it's lenght...I don't mind long reads, I rather prefer them..but there were spots in this book, particularly the landing party trying to sort out customs and language with the felinoid natives that I thought were a bit too long...
the ending was also a bit of a puzzler as well and left me wanting more answers..but other than that I thought this was a great star trek adventure...alot of great Spock moments in this one.
One Of The Best Star Trek Novels.......2006-07-26
This is in the top five of my all-time favorite Star Trek Novels. I bought it for the pleasure of reading about Uhura, and was happily introduced to the cat beings of Eeiauo and Sivao, as well as to Dr. Evan "Tail-Kinker" Wilson, who, in my opinion, is one of the best fill-in characters in Trek fandom. What's this "Mary Jane" crap I am reading about below? Evan is fun and refreshing, and has some of the snappiest comebacks that I have heard. While everyone else was being stand-offish and formal with the big cats, she walked right up and started talking with Brightspot like she was an old friend. It was fun getting to know her, and watching Spock try to figure out what made her tick.
The story was written by someone who obviously loves cats, and I have an inkling she wanted to insert a little version of herself into the story. What Star Trek fan hasn't wanted to plant a character based on yourself into a story where we could interact with our beloved Kirk and Spock? If Evan is based on Ms. Kagan, then I'm willing to bet Ms. Kagan is a very fun lady! As for the Sivaoans...they're such interesting beings that my friend and I named some of her cats after them - Brightspot (a calico, naturally), Settlesand, and Catchclaw among them.
I found the plot hole-free and fell for the twist at the end hook, line, and sinker. I may be gullible to some of you out there, but at least I enjoyed myself. I'm happy to say that I'm on my third copy of this book because the other two were read so much they literally disintegrated. Wonderful writing, amazing characters, and all frosted with the Star Trek mantra we know and love. Enjoy!
Oh 'Elath' Stab out my eyes!.......2006-04-10
This book got off to a really promising start. I remember Nichelle Nichols mentioning it at the convetion I went to. I have to wonder though if she actually read it or just knew the title. Because--the title is a HUGE misnomer, this is Mary Sue saves the day. In this case, her name is Evan Wilson, who has a short man's complex and isn't afraid to put Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Sulu, McCoy or anyone else in their place. And they don't mind one bit--nothing like a little harmless insubordiation from the cutie pie.
Gag.
She made an otherwise relatively interesting story totally intolerable. By the time I was half way through I was skimming for the paragraphs where she wasn't mentioned or actively speaking. There aren't many of those.
The story (When it isn't about Evan) is about a planet of feline aliens that have a horrible disease that there is no known cure for. Enterprise's mission is to find a cure from a song Uhura knows, that says that these aliens aren't natives to this planet--by finding their home planet.
Okay, cool. That requires the effort of Spock and Uhura mostly, so I was excited about that, getting to see their dynamic. Sadly that doesn't really happen much more in the book. As the relationships between the real characters are about to become completely defined by EVAN-SUE.
Slow moving plot on new found planet, getting friendly with kitty ancestors. More slow moving, Evan is greatness, I mean plot.
Everything is solved, except.
Who is Evan?
This is apparently a question that has made Kirk and McCoy wonder at Spock's sanity by the end of the book. Well, she is the Trickster of course--Puck or one of his kin.
Good greif.
If I could physically yank her from this book it would be a whole lot better for everyone.
Mary Sue syndrome.......2005-09-03
This could have been a very good Star Trek novel. The plot is engaging and the alien culture-building is excellent. Unfortunately its one flaw is a fatal one. The very annoying Dr Wilson ruins every scene she's in, and in the fashion of a Mary Sue she's in almost every scene. Cut out the author's pet character and give her part of the story to the others--especially Uhura, who is reduced to a supporting cast role in what is supposedly her story--and this would have been one of the best of the TOS novels, but as it is it is nigh unreadable.
Agonizingly Slow.......2005-03-18
Very, very slow plot. Pages and pages of mindless interaction with talking cats. And this is a old Trek novel, so the print is 2/3's the size of the modern print...making it even longer.
After suffering through the entire book, the ending is, well, eh.
Pick up 'Doctors Orders' for a more interesting 'native population interaction' novel. This one isn't even worth a penny.

Seasonal Southwest Cooking: Contemporary Recipes & Menus for Every Occasion.......2007-07-16
Seasonal Southwest Cooking: Contemporary Recipes & Menus for Every Occasion is an amazingly versatile cookbook. Looking through this book, the reader can easily find tasty recipes to create something new and exciting for a family meal. Most of the items in these recipes can be found in the average kitchen with missing ingredients creatively substituted with what's at hand.
However, within this book, the reader can also find recipes suitable for special occasions. In fact, menus for special occasions ranging from romantic soirees and thoughtful brunches, through formal buffets and informal barbeques to festive Thanksgiving and Christmas meals are provided at the beginning of this book. Each month's menu is based upon a seasonal theme. Throughout the book, photographs of the southwest landscape during these various seasons are illustrated. These photographs are absolutely breathtaking and definitely help the reader get into the southwest mood as he or she cooks.
Beyond the basics.......2007-05-22
This book first caught my eye as it was featured in the gift shops at Zion and Grand Canyon National Park. After a short introduction to well-prepared SouthWest food on this trip, I did some research and this book seemed to be a fan favorite.
I highly recommend this book for several reasons - 1) there is plenty of background information to satisfy your curiosity without overwhelming you; 2) the recipes and instructions are well-thought out and organized around an efficient work plan; 3) there are plenty of basic recipes such as salsa fresca, guacamole, and avocado and corn salsa; from these basics, you can create your own dishes; and 4) the photography is stunning.
An outstanding presentation........2006-09-24
Chef Jacques Pepin offers the foreword for a gorgeous, oversized collection of recipes and menus pairing lovely color photos of not just foods but regional scenery with a cook's guide to specialties. This is a presentation piece cooks will relish: its dishes come from a chef and author who uses nearly forty years in the Southwest among professional circles to provide home cooks with unique dishes, from Corn Soup with Poblano Chilies to Apricot Chicken. An outstanding presentation.

What a great book!.......2006-07-28
I bought this book for my father-in-law who loves to cook and loves southwestern food. I decided to flip through the book when it arrived and couldn't put it down to wrap it so decided to use five of the recipes and make my father-in-law his birthday dinner from the book I was giving him. I chose Pulled pork (which as a unique ancho chile-dried cherry sauce, YUM!), Cow boy beans (sounds boring, but I could have eaten the entire pot myself it was so good!), chipotle cornbread (spicy, just the way we like it!), cornmeal biscuits (a great non-spicy biscuit with a great texture and flavor, couldn't decide if I liked the chipotle cornbread or these better!), and triple chocolate, ancho chile, and almond tart for dessert (decedently divine!). I also loved how the book has a sample menu for each month of the year so entertaining can be that much less work. The book also included some great recipes that utilized different catus. There are also specatcular photographs of southwestern landscapes and plants that give this book a elegant coffee table feel.
So, if you, or you need to buy a gift for someone who loves to cook and loves southwestern food this is the book for you! I am going to have to buy my own copy so I don't end up stealing my father-in-law's.
fantastic!.......2006-04-21
Every recipe I have tried out of this book is excellent! Last year we had the whole Thanksgiving meal from this cook book. Everybody loved the dinner!

Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2006-11-04
This book gives you insight into the breed and how to care for it.
Great book about Bostons!.......2006-02-08
We just got a Boston puppy a couple months ago & we were looking for a good book to summarize their care & general things about a Boston. This book is great! I use it as a reference guide when I have questions.
Great Guide.......2003-04-18
I'm no expert on the Boston Terrier, which is why I like this book. We're planning on adopting one this summer, and I've been hunting for good, user-friendly BT books. This one covers everything, it's to the point, and the last four chapters are full of good advice for any dog owner, regardless of the breed. I wanted a manual I could refer to over and over again ~ this one fits the bill. :o)
Great Book to Learn About Bostons.......2002-07-05
I bought this book after it being recommended by a breeder. It was exactly the kind of book that I was wanting. It provides specifics on the health problems, grooming tactics, and eating habits of the dog, which were the most important subjects I was looking for. The latter part of the book discusses how to enjoy your dog, though it isn't specifically directed toward the Boston. This is a great book and a must-have for any Boston Terrier owner.
Incomplete.......2001-03-16
I bought this book hoping to learn more about the breed and their special needs. However only the first half of the book was breed specific. The shopping lists and breed history was interesting, but I still have many unanswered questions about basic care. The second half had basic training tips that applies to all breeds. This may be a good book for someone who is looking for a general overview of the breed, but if you're looking for a detailed manual about how to care for and train a puppy, adult, and senior Boston Terrier, this book isn't it.
Book Description
This book is based on the author's informative and interesting news column that has run in antique publications across the country since 1997. These articles are presented here, along with photographs of hundreds of pieces of vintage costume jewelry with descriptions, designer names, and current collector values. A section on costume jewelry on the Internet is also included, which profiles in detail, the best costume jewelery sites on the web, including biographies of each dealer and a synopsis of what makes the sites special. There are also hints for those wishing to sell their jewelry at auction. There are even vintage costume jewelry advertisements to add pizazz to the book. Finally, an informative section on where to buy replacement stones, how to restring beads and pearls, how to repair costume jewelry, and how to join vintage costume jewelry clubs rounds out the book. 2004 values.
Customer Reviews:
Good jewelry collectors book!.......2007-08-21
This book covers a host of costume jewelry, better than average photos of the manufacturer's signatures or maker's marks (very important if you are a collector!), along with good descriptions and some pricing information. Included in the back of the book are copies of some of the original advertisements for some of the jewelry. Good stuff! I'd recommend this book if you are a collector.
Valuable Costume Jewelry Guide!.......2007-04-02
Wonderful pictures! I like the way she has some jewelry shown under designer headings while she also shows groups of brooches, necklaces, etc., with various designers together. I especially like the beginning that shows the backs of designer pieces; something you don't get to see a lot in these jewelry guides. It's one of those books you take out on the porch on a nice day and go through page by page from beginning to end (for me, it was like a kid in a candy store), and by the time you get to the end, you feel much more knowledgeable about costume vintage jewelry!
Haphazard Organization.......2007-01-10
The jewelry in this guide is mainly from the author's and apparently her friends' collections. Quite a bit of the jewelry is unidentified by company. The book is strangely organized beginning with around a dozen companies, unalphabetized, followed by sections under the headings of "Quality," "Fruits & Vegetables," "Bakelite, Lucite & Other Plastics," "Parures & Demi- Parures," "Necklaces," "Bracelets," "Brooches & Pins," "Earrings," "Rings & Things," "Pebble Jewelry," and "Guilloche." Under these headings there is no discernible organization. The book concludes with a short section on contemporary jewelry, general information on reproductions and care and repair, thirteeen pages of vintage ads, and some costume jewelry internet web sites. The strengths of this book are that the photography is pretty good and the collection of figural pieces is extensive.
GREAT JEWELRY BOOK!!!!.......2006-11-07
I am so happy to add this wonderful costume jewelry book to my collection of reference books. Very well written and I love the sections on DeLillo, Rosenstein, Claudette, Hobe and especially Calvaire since I recently purchased a magnificent Calvaire wide collar necklace & bracelet set with emerald green rhinestones. I was also happy to see the green "baked potato" set since I also have the same set but in a different color. It would be fantastic to one day find out if this set is really a Nettie Rosenstein set. Thank you so much, Ann, for featuring these special designers. Hope to see another book from you soon!
Good Information and lots of pictures!.......2006-09-08
I like this book because it has an assortment of makers and not alot of history. There are alot of pictures and values which is what I am looking for.The pictures are clear. Most jewelry books seem to have inflated prices on the values of the jewelry. This book doesn't seem to be to far off base. But I'm no expert!I also like that there is a section on "Fakes".
To bad it has to come to that! It's a good book so buy it!

Customer Reviews:
For your eyes only.......2007-07-02
I'm surprised to see this book has received such poor ratings because though I agree with other reviewers that it has its flaws, I don't think it is a bad book at all.
I bought this book at the bookstore without first looking up any reviews online. At the time, I had to choose between Aikins' book and one other book that had better photographs and a sleeker look. The Aikins' book won me over because most of the pieces are dated and they are photographed in their entirety and on their own. There is nothing wrong with focusing on a portion of a necklace or photographing a piece surrounded with props, but I also think it is important to be able to see what type of findings were common at a particular period in time (although the backs of earrings and brooches were not photographed for this book).
Most of the jewelry in this book is from the 1940s to 1950s. There are a few from the 1920s and earlier and a couple from the 1970s and 1980s. I like the variety of necklaces, bracelets, pins and earrings the author shows in this book. In fact, every time I open it, I seem to find a new piece that catches my attention even though I have read the book from cover to cover. This is not a book for those looking for historical references and explanations about the different styles and trends in jewelry fashion. For that, I would recommend such books as C. Jeanenne Bell's "Answers to Questions About Old Jewelry". "Brilliant Rhinestones," on the other hand, is more adequate as a visual reference for those who want to familiarize themselves with the "look" of a variety of pieces of vintage rhinestone jewelry.
No good deed shall go unpunished.......2005-07-05
I got the book "Brilliant Rhinestones" as a gift several years ago, and I thought at the time that the prices were way, way off - I've never seen such high and uneven prices for costume jewelry. Plus, the book's written content is extremely amateurish and, frankly, irritating in the extreme. Well, to spare my good friend's feelings I didn't share this opinion with her - told her the book was great. So, what did I get for my birthday this year? Yikes!!!!! The next edition, (20th Century Costume Jewelry) even more irritating than the first!! I bear no ill will towards the author, I'm assuming the publisher reeled her in to do another book (this stuff is kind of like the old "vanity press", isn't it?) and is counting on the book to sell just because these books are hot right now. But beware - this latest book has prices for modern jewelry that is absolutely, totally based on fantasy (for stuff you can load up on at Goodwill)and the prices for real vintage jewelry is also way off, about like her first book.
Dull Rhinestones. Nothing Brilliant Here.......2005-03-03
I purchased both this book and the sister companion, 20th Century Jewelry and felt that it was on my list of one of the worst photographed books that I have seen. There are two others by this same publisher that are lackluster in photography. Little information about the jewelry history is included in both books. While I appreciate all that the author has going for her (no doubt the other review was written by her husband), a little more attention to photography detail would have made this book much more enjoyable. I felt that the prices were a little over inflated which is a shame for both books because gorgeous jewelry is featured, just lousy photography to show them off.
Not Informative or Realistic.......2004-06-28
Little information, very inflated prices on low end costume jewelry. Misleading for novices, no information for seasoned collectors. I wish I could sell things at these prices!
I wish I could give this book more stars, or a BIG diamond!.......2004-06-20
Perhaps, those who thought negatively of this book should take into consideration the extensive time and effort on the author's part; not only does she work, raise a child, and send a husband to college, but she also collects jewelry and shares her collection with the world. It is doubtful her book is meant for the uneducated, novice collector. Maybe one should take a hiatus from critizing and look at the book for its poetics, and the great feeling and thought from Ms. Aikins. Since I contacted Ms. Aikins, I have learned many interesting facts about costume jewelry; I'm looking forward to her second book. Hopefully, it will showcase even more exquisite jewelry than the first! Kudos to you, Ms. Aikins!

Book Description
This study addresses the philosophical context of the Mystagogy of Maximus the Confessor. It examines how the Byzantine monk integrates Neoplatonist topics when exposing one of the most important feature of his religious conception of the physical world or cosmology.
The volume contains three chapters. The first one compares the purpose of the Mystagogy and the program of the philosophical training in late Antiquity. The second consists of two parts : (1) study of the use of the Aristotelian categories of 'when' and 'where' in the 'Ambiguum 10' of Maximus in order to analyse the status of ecclesiastical architecture and the nature of the liturgical 'synaxis' of the church (chapter 3); (2) study of the development of the categories of space and time in the works of the Neoplatonist Greek commentators of Plato and Aristotle such as Jamblichus, Proclus, Simplicius and Damascius. The third chapter offers the first extended examination of the metaphysical status of the 'ecclesia' and its dynamic activity compared to the metaphysical status of space and time required for the explanation of the Neoplatonist physical world system. Henceforth, the 'ecclesia' of the Mystagogy can be considered as the type of the providential action of God.
This book provides many important new perspectives for reading the works of Maximus the Confessor, especially the Mystagogy, not only for theologians, but also for scholars interested in late Antique and Byzantine philosophy.

Book Description
A wide-ranging, spirited collection of personal essays about growing up black and Southern Like Maya Angelou and bell hooks before her, Trudier Harris explores her complicated identity as a black woman in the American South. By turns amusing and probing, Summer Snow lays out in a series of linked essays the formative experiences that shaped Harris into the writer and intellectual she has become. With passion and eloquence, Harris writes about the creation of her unique first name, how porch-sitting is in fact a creative Southern tradition, and how insecurities over her black hair ("the ubiquitous hair") factored into her self-image. She writes about being a "black nerd" as a child, and how the black church influenced her in her early years. But she also writes about more troubling topics, such as the price blacks have paid for integration, and the "staying power of racism." In one moving piece, Harris remembers a white teenager propositioning her for sex in exchange for five dollars. Unflinching in her assessment of white Southern culture, yet deeply attached to a South many black intellectuals have abandoned, Harris in Summer Snow takes readers on a surprising tour of one woman's life, loves, and lessons.
Customer Reviews:
Autumnal Harvest.......2003-04-20
Summer Snow is a cornucopia of riches about a landscape steeped in traditions and customs that evoke pride and terror, praisesong and dirges. Harris is funny, provocative, frank, and incisive as she ruminates on family, community, education, racism, religion, hair and the mannerisms that inform the black and white people who intersect on these social and cultural plains. Her essays are steeped in a wisdom that has accrued through a joyful life. The summer snow of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as depicted by Trudier Harris, is a cultural phenomenon that is quintessentially American for any reader growing up in the South--and I use Malcolm X's geographical construct, south of Canada.
