4 out of 5 stars Like visiting old friends.......2007-06-09

This is the second Mrs. Jeffries' title I've read and I feel as though I've met a new household of interesting people. Although there's not a whole lot of "mystery" as to "who done it", the means of gathering the clues and coming to the conclusion are charming and give insights into Victorian England. Reading this book was like sitting down with old friends to share a pot of tea.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Jeffries and "Crew" Solve Another Case.......2006-08-26

In the 20th book in the Mrs. Jeffries Victorian Mystery series, the beloved Inspector has another murder to solve. This time, Sir George Braxton has been found murdered with his head stuck in a pond of ice. It seems that he was hit on the head prior to his death, and the killer wanted to insure his demise by putting his head in the frozen water. None of the members of his household seem upset by the miserable miser's death, however, and at the top of the list of suspects are the man's three daughters. Being as though Sir George is a distant relative of the queen, Inspector Witherspoon is pressed to find the killer before Christmas...less than a week away. With the list of suspects growing by the day, Mrs. Jeffries and the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens must work overtime to catch a killer before they can celebrate the holiday season together.

I love this series! The characters are so vividly portrayed that I feel as though I have stepped into Victorian London. This is definitely a cozy series, and the books are a very quick read. Frankly, I don't really read this series just for the mysteries themselves...I read them for the interactions between the characters. The staff work together to secretly assist the Inspector in his cases, and I like to see the camaraderie between the different members of the staff. I am waiting to see if the Inspector ever catches on about the "extra" help he is receiving. So far, he remains in the dark. I also keep waiting to see how Betsy and Smythe will handle their upcoming marriage, and if they will stay on as hired help just to assist in the murder investigations.

The first book in the series is called "The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-06-29

Another excellent installment in the Mrs. Jeffries series. I've run out of adjectives at this point. I've simply adored each book in the series!

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Jeffries and a Christmas mystery!.......2006-06-04

Welcome back to my friends at Upper Edmonton Gardens. By now these people do feel like friends to me, and that is what keeps this series fresh. This one is set a week before Christmas, so Inspector Witherspoon's staff are busy trying to get ready for the festive occasion, as well as solve a perplexing murder. This is a murder with too many suspects since no one, not even his family, liked Baronet George Braxton. He has three obnoxious daughters and one "cousin" living with him, and all had reason to dislike him. But they do figure it all out, just in time to celebrate the season.

2 out of 5 stars A fun idea, poorly written..........2006-01-10

The premise of this series is fun-- a group of servants are behind their employer's success. Unfortunately the writing is very poor. Language is repetitive, even within paragraphs, and the author makes zero effort to use historically accurate language or incorporate norms of social behavior of the day (the only "historical" details I saw were relying on fires for heat and horses for transport). The characters all speak in 2006 English-- the only nod to Victorian language seems to be use of the terms "lass" and "lad". The dialogue just wasn't very well done. It was odd-- the book had many, many typos and obvious editing problems, too-- just seemed thrown together in a short time vs. well-written and well-produced.

I was disappointed-- this book could have been so much better.

In The Perricone Weight-loss Diet, the father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging reveals the role of internal micro-inflammations, caused mainly by additive-packed foods and a sedentary lifestyle, not only in accelerated aging, but also in unwanted weight gain. The good news he shares is: it is possible to slow down the clock, clear the skin, and shed the pounds by following a diet of whole foods and natural supplements, and by progressively adopting an "anti-inflammatory lifestyle", including quality sleep and stress-reducing activities (pet lovers will especially appreciate the passage on the healing power of pets.)

If Dr. Perricone's division of high- versus low-glycemic index foods, and healthy (Omega-3-rich) versus unhealthy fats, doesn't especially sound like breakout news, he has to be credited for his uniquely convincing way of (re-) laying out these dietary principles, and for incorporating them into a global plan to achieve better health and weight loss. "Treat yourself well and the weight will come off," he suggests. And this anti-alarmist, anti-paternalistic, and confident delivery (he doesn't fear complimenting competitor Tammi Flynn on her sensible Three-Apple-a-Day Plan), paired with his stellar success record in the health field (The Perricone Prescription; The Perricone Promise), forces your attention.

Readers will dive effortlessly into the easy-flowing chapters, from "Breaking the Inflammation-Fat Connection" to "The 10 Top Food Groups for Permanent Weight Loss" (headed up with mouthwatering wild Alaskan salmon), to Perricone's signature threefold plan, which he promises will show dramatic results in as little as 14 days. Complete with a full 14-day meal plan, detailed nutritional information for each recipe, a seafood safety guide, and a supplement and organic food retailer guide, The Perricone Weight-loss Diet will naturally find its place on the eye-level shelf of your home library.-- Nathalie Farage

4 out of 5 stars I Like His Approach But..........2007-09-07

I totally buy into his approach and have been doing it for 2 weeks. I bought my own supplements, not his ridiculously expensive ones. I have no sugar cravings which is an all-time first for me. I also think my skin is looking better.

That said, I am barely able to do the shopping and meal preps, it is way more work than any other approach. Something has to be prepped/cooked at all three meals. I work at home and don't have kids. If that were not the case I don't know if I would be able to do this.

      3 out of 5 stars Mercury???.......2007-07-19

I like this book minus the gimmicks. You can still do this diet and find alternatives to his supplements and skin products. However, the one thing that concerns me about this diet is that the healthy amount of fish to consume per week maximum according to the water bureau is 12 ounces per week. This is due to mercury levels-which are evident in all fish-some more than others, including wild Alaskan salmon. In this diet, Dr. Perricome asks you to eat something like 32 ounces of fish per week. As a woman of pregnancy age, this would be a mistake. So, that is my main issue with this diet. If you don't care about mercury levels in your bloodstream, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Works! Wow! Big life change........2007-04-19

I picked up this book - well, my roommate did - about 6 days ago and immediately stopped eating grains, and started eating cod liver oil, flax, salmon, sardines, and salads like Dr. Perricone recommends (I've shunned legumes, too, for the heck of it - the paleo diet encourages that). I lost five pounds - in 6 days! All water weight, I'm sure, but that's still killer. Also, I sometimes seem to have an insatiable thirst on this diet...anyone else experience that?

This diet will be really tough for people who don't like veggies or fish. For me, it is the intuitive way to go, though, so..make yourself like it!! - get hypnotherapy, whatever you have to do! For a great supplemental book on flax and its benefits for weightloss, and arthritis/cancer prevention, check out Flax! Fabulous Flax.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Traveling and Tasting Italy.......2007-01-19

This book helps you select wisely amoung the countless wineries and labels of the delicious wine you will taste in Italy. The book makes it easy to understand which wine taste great in the separate regions, without having to know any of the stuck-up jargon wine experts blab to sound impressive. More importantly the book does not recommend the expensive wine to be best for your palate. You will find the bottles that taste like $50, but are less than $20.

4 out of 5 stars A very good beginning on the subject.......2004-06-04

This is a most appropriate way to begin the study of Italian wine - the theoretical part, that is. The book is concise yet clear and understandable, despite a substantial amount of new terminology. I use it also as a reference for choosing new Italian wines, when in a wine store. Must say though, that in these circumstances (in a store with people around me) the word DUMMIES, in big friendly letters on the book cover, is a disatvantage.

3 out of 5 stars TMI on Italian Wine.......2003-08-20

Although I loved this author team on past "Dummies" wine books, this one was a bit tedious. In the authors' defense, Italian wine is a complex and pervasive topic. The book covered every wine region and wine style in Italy and is not a book to curl up with, but rather one to utilize as a reference guide. It would be an essential piece of travel gear if one were going to Italy.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern View of Italian Wine.......2001-10-11

Italian wine was for many years seldom more than pretty good--and then something wonderful happened: the global economy. All of a sudden winemakers everywhere were competing for customers everywhere, and for most of them that meant they had to improve quality, and fast. Italian winemakers responded and successfully to the challenge. They now produce some of the most esteems top-of-the-line wines in the world as well as an increasing nmber of wines that are real bargains (that is, you get than you pay for). But too many wine writers have failed to keep up with this ar-reaching change, have failed to expand their horizons beyond France.

Not writers. Authors of "dummies" wine books since "Wine for Dummies" in 1995, they have closely followed Italy's quality revolution, and so can point you to a world of pleasure you might otherwise miss.

After saying that much I'm in danger of repeating what I wrote in my review of the authors'"FRENCH Wine for Dummies," published
simultaneously, so you should scamper right over to my review of that book for more details. Then you'll have the complete rundown on both.

One thing I should add: these books aren't really for dummies. I keep them at hand and I know several other pros who do too.

Cesare Casella, Italian chef extraordinaire, is out to prove that this food can be both simple to prepare and surprisingly healthy. Italian mothers and grandmothers wouldn't have it any other way! In Casella's previous culinary creation, Diary of a Tuscan Chef, we joined the author on a food pilgrimage to Tuscany. Now, in Italian Cooking for Dummies, the trek explores every region and its associated dishes. Casella and coauthor Jack Bishop embrace us as close friends with whom they have eaten pasta for years. One step at a time, the authors lovingly explain how to make Italian food at home, discussing ingredients and techniques. Scattered within each of the eight chapters are recipes for 29 pasta dishes, 7 risottos, 22 heavenly desserts--in fact, 150 delicious dishes altogether. In traditional For Dummies style, life is made easier by icons alerting you to timesaving tips or potentially disastrous situations--like leaving risotto unattended, which can lead to a big sticky vat of goo!

There is something here for every taste: meats, fish, pizzas, and vegetarian dishes, as well as desserts and salads. Pasta Wheels with Walnut Sauce makes a nutty alternative to pasta dishes made with tomato-based sauces. The Spinach Gnocchi are surprisingly simple to create and will be gobbled down in no time. Calzone with Mixed Vegetables is a healthy alternative to pepperoni pizza. Desserts are very well represented--here is traditional Creme Caramel, and a delightful Pink Grapefruit Granita.

So enjoy life and eat like the Italians do; Italian Cooking for Dummies shows you how. --Naomi Gesinger

This is a very informative and easy to follow reference for cooking Italian foods. I love the explanations for cheese types, wines, espresso, herbs and etc. This really helps me to understand what products to buy and how to buy them. The information on reading the labels olive oil was eye opening. I have tried a couple of the recipes and they are yummy and simple. I am hooked on the Asparagus with Parmesan and egg! It sounded rather weird but I tried it and absolutely love it, especially when I am in a hurry and hungry. I am so glad I have this cook book as a resource.

I found this book to be incomplete and in need of decent editing. I found at least 3 major recipe mistakes 1.Roman style toasts calls for 7 slices of bread cut into 28 1/2 by 2 inch pieces 2.In the recipe for meatloaf after browning the meat, you are to add wine and broth to the browning pan but there is no instruction as to what to do with the broth. 3.The braised beef talks about a roast but lists the meat ingredient as 3 lbs of beef stew meat, cut into 2 inch cubes. But what really bothered me is the lack of vegetable recipes - this is not Italian cooking!

4 out of 5 stars A lot of info in concise form!.......2007-09-14

I bought this book in hopes of having a "catch all" reference for our new adventures as shepherds. The book is packed with information in an easy to read format. I will still have to supplement the book with other publications, but it does cover the basics and would serve as a beginner's manual. One thing we have begun doing recently is printing off extension publications and compiling them in a 3 ring binder, arranged by topic. This book is easy to read and would be a good reference for 4H students.

5 out of 5 stars sheep: small-scale sheep keeping for pleasure and profit.......2006-11-06

I have read alot of books on sheep for years, because I own sheep and what to do my best at it. This book was probably the best book on sheep I have ever read. The information was great and easy to understand this book is right on. I have told alot of sheep people I know to get this book

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Hobby Farm book from Sue Weaver..........2006-10-30

I read this book being a complete novice on raising sheep. After reading this book, I really feel I have enough knowledge to raise my own sheep on my hobby farm.

The author (Sue Weaver) writes in a wonderful down-to-earth and very easy to understand style. She covers everything sheep such as: choosing the right sheep breed for your needs, sheep disposition & behavior, sheep housing, nutritional needs, shearing & selling fleece, hoof trimming, delivering lambs, common sheep diseases and how to vaccinate your sheep. Whether you're a total novice like me or an old pro, I think you could learn a lot from this book.

This book is put together on nice glossy paper stock. It also has tons of excellent photos. What I love most is that the author shows many photo's on how to correctly do many procedures w/sheep, such as vaccinations. Also this book sports an excellent resource directory. The directory includes an online directory, sheep organizations, sheep suppliers, state & university resources and my favorite the book and periodical guide to all sheep.

The only thing I would've liked in here (tho, I know it goes way beyond the scope of this book) is a chapter that had every sheep breed with photos and characteristics listed. Tho, the author does go a bit into what breeds are best for milk and for wool.

This book is a great investment. I also have Sue Weaver's other book on raising chickens and it is wonderful as well. If you're reading this Sue, how about a book on raising Ducks and one on raising Alpacas next? :)

5 out of 5 stars Great advice and amazing resources.......2005-07-12

This book is an excellent resource for anyone just considering sheep to seasoned shepherds. The pictures are incredible and the information covered is invaluable. I am going to send this book home with each of my lambs' new owners. The Resources section is a MUST for every new owner.

5 out of 5 stars Add Class To Your Wardrobe!.......2002-06-03

This book is almost worn out from use and it is lots of fun. There are styles for any size: small to giant scarves. For any shape: square, oblong, rectangle. And for any use: hats, dresses, neckwear, shawls and more; See how to use creative accessories such as belts, buckles, and clips. It even shows directions for those blouses with sewn in ties you don't know how to fix. I did not want to lose this book so rather than loan it to a friend I thought I'd check Amazon.com. I was not expecting to find it but so glad it is still available. This is not a coffee table book, but rather a softcover, 6x9 inch, handy reference guide you can keep in your scarf drawer. Mine also came with a folding cardboard display stand attached.

5 out of 5 stars Best Information on Subject.......2000-05-26

This paragraph is not a review per se; it is a plea to the author and publisher to re-release the book. I have recently perused five to ten books and one video on the subject that are currently on the market; none of them come anywhere close to comparing with the excellence of this book: both in the quantity of ways to tie scarves or the diagrams on how to do so.

5 out of 5 stars The best book of this type..........1999-06-18

This book is an excellent reference book for anyone who is looking for different ways to wear scarfs. In a perfect world it would be available at any store that sells scarfs.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to help you use that silk investment.......1997-12-04

I bought this odd little book several years ago in a department store when I was frustrated by all the expensive scarves I owned but didn't wear because I did know what to do with them. Although it seemed expensive, I decided it was a better use of money than I'd made for all those idle scarves. Hammett provides over 100 illustrated designs for scarves tied with knots and as many for scarves fastened with scarf clips. As soon as I started using this book, I found a wealth of new ways to wear my same old scarves, and I started getting constant compliments on my clever use of them. (Heh heh.) If you have scarves, buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration, Inspiration, Inspiration...........2004-04-30

This book gave me tons of ideas! It covers different styles, different rooms and plenty of painting techniques, as well as tiling, wall papering and fabric covered walls or specific spots like how to paint fireplaces. Everything is easy to understand and friendly to the eye when reading! This is my favorite book out of all books on color and painting techniques so far. Others either have good pictures or good explanations, this has it all!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures.......2002-05-03

I will soon be moving into a new home and I wanted to get some ideas on walls and painting. The cover of this book interested me as I want to go beyond beige, tan, or white walls, and this book certainly providess a lot of color. It has a section on assessing your walls, how to make a small room bigger, dark room lighter, low ceilings look higher...which I know will come in handy. It gives a short section on colors, the warm and cool and doing contrasts. With each page there are very nice color photographs to go along with what she is saying. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I think I can safely say that there is a photo for every style, technique and example she provides. She covers how to make the paint effects, such as colorwashing, ragging, stippling, dragging, marbling, trompe l'oeil and more. Her techniques are demonstrated on doors, fireplaces and of course walls. She also provides the 'ingredients' necessary to do these projects, the types of paint, varnish, brushes (and plenty of pictures to show them!). There is even a section demonstrating how to do simple tiling on walls, like in the kitchen, or for a decorative effect with more exotic tiles. You can also see how to do wallpaper. Overall, a lot of topics are covered in this book, and there are plenty others I haven't mentioned. I would consider it a great starting point book that will give you a broad view of what you can do and how a style looks on a wall. There are a mixture of photos that show a paint effect in a real room setting, and other photos that just show the effect on a small portion of the wall, as illustrated on the books cover. Of course, it would be ideal to see all the paint effects in a real room setting, but it would be a daunting task for the author to achieve that. I can't say this book will be the only paint/wall book I will buy or look at it, but I believe that if I saw a picture of my ideal room color in a magazine or somewhere else, then I could use this book to clearly show me how I can apply that color on my walls with whichever technique I prefer. Personally, I can't imagine one book having everything I would want in it anyways. I have no regrets on buying this book and know it will make a wonderful reference for when I do get ready to tackle walls.

The story moves quickly and you will have a hard time putting this down. The characters go rapidly through the twists and turns of the story. Even though you think you know how things will end, the journey is the fun part. The message I got from the story is that there is hope and salvation in everyone, we just need someone to see it in us.

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally Stirring By A Most Literate Writer.......2001-06-21

I could relate to nearly everything that Miss Waters wrote about in Crossing Highbridge, because I came from that Irish Catholic enclave, I knew the Waters family long ago, and I went to Sacred Heart with Maureen's sister, Agnes.

Maureen Waters is a gifted writer who combines history, philosophy, religion, and the socio-econimic conditions in a working class environment in the 1940's and 1950's, with utter grace, and at the same time, the reader can experience some strong emotions of saddness and joy.

5 out of 5 stars Happiness and sorrows of a truly literary person.......2001-06-21

I was able to identify with nearly everything Miss Waters wrote about her Irish Catholic upbringing in Highbridge, because I too came from the same place, and I knew her sister Agnes many, many years ago. However, if I had not had the privilege of knowing Maureen and her literary family, I would still have been able to appreciate the writer's gift of style where she combined gracefully, history, philosophy, religion along with the socioeconomic conditions of the 1940's and 1950's growing up in Highbridge.

              5 out of 5 stars A Grief Understood.......2001-06-01

This profoundly moving memoir of growing up Irish/Catholic/female in the midcentury Bronx began with the author's need to understand the loss of her son to accidental death by drugs and alcohol. As she puts it, "the drive to piece together cause and effect was a belief that I had far more power than I actually did for good or ill." She sifts the past out of psychological necessity, desperate, guilty, and finds ordinary treasure: in human characters - her father, an immigrant from Sligo, her mother from Mayo, a feisty and lovable little sister, Agnes, and, above all, in her beautiful and enigmatic lost child of the flaming red hair, Brian Patrick - and also in their brave and lonely human places (Highbridge on Hudson, Long Island). She looks back for clues to her loss from the perspective of a divorced single mother trying to juggle children and hold her own in academe (she's now a professor of English). Memory sifted through the prism of such luminous prose and honest emotion offers a gentle and moving consolation to this reader. The story of the author's Catholic journey, from insider - the parish was Sacred Heart - to outsider is told with devastating brevity. I'll never forget the final image of women's exclusion. It rings so true. The abyss is present in Waters' world, but to me this is a book of hope

              5 out of 5 stars A Grief Understood.......2001-06-01

This beautiful memoir of growing up Irish-Catholic-female in the Bronx at midcentury began with the author's tragic loss of one of her sons to an accidental death from drugs and alcohol. In order to survive herself, she must understand: "The drive to piece together cause and effect was a belief that I had far more power than I actually did for good or ill." The bereaved mother, who is also a professor of English, sifts her past for answers. She uncovers the treasure of human characters (her father, Daniel Waters, an immigrant from Sligo, her mother from Mayo; her rebel little sister, Agnes) in their brave and lonely human settlement (Highbridge on the Hudson). She looks back on the cost of parenting alone as a divorced young mother and trying to hold her own in academe. The consolation that memory - and Waters' luminous prose - makes for her and for this reader is profoundly moving. The story of her Catholic journey, in particular, the movement from insider - the parish was Sacred Heart - to outsider, is especially strong: she tells it with a devastating brevity and one final image that I'll never forget. It rings so true. This is a courageous book about loss in which you come to see that what remains is, after all, a matter of life understood and hope.
