Murder of a Cad!.......2006-05-09
In the 19th installment in the Mrs. Jeffries Victorian Mystery series, the beloved Inspector has another murder to solve. This time, Sir Edmund Leggett has been shot to death on the night of his engagement announcement. It seems as thought Sir Edmund has a bit of a past...and as of late, he has been haunted by it. He had acquired himself a stalker, presumably one of the women that he used and tossed away like garbage. Everyone jumps to the quick conclusion that his stalker must be the murderess, but when she shows up begging for help from the Inspector's household, Mrs. Jeffries is not so sure. It seems Sir Edmund was not well liked, and the list of suspects seems too long for even the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens to weed through. Will Mrs. Jeffries and her team of undercover detectives help the Inspector solve another murder, or will the murderer go free?
I love this series! The characters are so vividly portrayed that I feel as though I have stepped into Victorian London.
This is definitely a cozy series, and the books are a very quick read. I found the puzzle in this book to be a bit more difficult to solve as in previous books. But I don't really read this series for the mysteries themselves...I read them for the interactions between the characters. The staff work together to secretly assist the Inspector in his cases, and I like to see the camaraderie between the different members of the staff. I am waiting to see if the Inspector ever catches on about the "extra" help he is receiving. So far, he remains in the dark.
The first book in the series is called "The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries". Enjoy!
Ms. Brightwell has found the right formula!.......2006-04-02
I agree that it is difficult to keep a long-running series fresh and exciting, but Ms. Brightwell has found the right formula. This Victorian mystery series keeps its charm through book after book. As I read I begin to think of the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens as old friends, and can't wait to see what murder they'll be trying to help solve next. In this book the victim was not a well-liked man. He was a bounder and profligate, so no one was really upset when he was killed, but Inspector Witherspoon has to find the killer regardless. That means his staff have to help him. By this time Witherspoon is able to do some real detecting on his own, but that doesn't mean that he's ungrateful when he gets a break somewhere. This series is pure delight.
Brilliant!.......2006-01-27
Emily Brightwell has give us yet another wonderful book in her Mrs. Jeffries series. I read this one in three hours without putting it down. I loved it!
The Inspector's Household does it again........2004-11-03
It is very difficult to keep a series fresh. Plots easily become stale, and begin to sound like the last book you read by the same author. Emily Brightwell has found a method in which she keeps her readers interested and her endings reasonable. I like this book because it touches on real feelings of loyalty in the inspector's house and among other characters. The series continues to be a welcome distraction from a busy day and really fine entertainment.
Wonderful Series.......2004-10-19
In this mystery set in Victorian England, Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is in charge of the investigation of the murder of Sir Edmund Leggett, who was killed on his way home from his engagement party. Witherspoon has plenty of suspects, beginning with a young woman who has been stalking him. But there's plenty of other people that wanted him dead, including his fiancée who hates him (he was marrying her for her money, her parents agreed because they wanted his title), his mistress who is furious at the upcoming wedding, his cousin who inherits everything, and the numerous people he owes money to. But Witherspoon will have no problem solving this case, not while his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of his household staff are working behind the scenes to help him!
I really enjoy this series. The mysteries are always well written and well plotted. Brightwell switches back and forth between Witherspoon's investigation and the servants which I like, because it gives insight into all the characters. What I like the most is that, even after nineteen books in the series, the characters continue to grow and in each book we learn more and more about them. In this particular book, it was a little tidbit about Hatchet that made him come even more alive to me as a character. And Witherspoon's detecting abilities develop more and more each book, which is a nice touch as it would have been easy for him to become a caricature.
I highly recommend these books for fans of cozy mysteries. My only complaint is I read the book in one night and now have to wait for the next one!

A Must Read.......2004-06-05
The Crimson Bears is a great read filled with intense situations of peril and even though I haven't actually read it the extra credit that I'm getting for plugging my English teacher's book should be enough to make YOU want to. Dr. La Farge is the MAN and he deserves every penny of your hard earned rent money.
Absolutely Fantastic.......2000-03-19
This book was a total delight. I loved it so much I spent a year looking for the sequel (and found it here!). I originally bought the book because it looked like a text that could take me away from myself and into a world of fantasy and fun; and it did that and more. This tale of a brother and sister bear on an somewhat unintended adventure is so captivating that I could barely put it down. The plot twists and turns while at the same time the bear characters are so nicely developed that I found myself wishing I could visit their world. There are striking parallels in the world of the Crimson Bears to that of modern day society that are discovered when contemplating the Kingdon of the Bears, the fantasy inspired secondary characters and political/social circumstances involved. It's a fantasy novel that makes you think and turn pages quickly. When I was done with it I loaned it to a couple of friends and they have been looking for the sequel too! Besides the characters and plot being well developed the excecptionally descriptive prose used is truly outstanding, stimulating and mind-stretching. At times the text is lighthearted and funny and then reverts to serious and suspensful. An awesome read. Really anticipating reading the sequel!
Buy the book, dammit!.......1998-07-18
Okay, I'll admit it. I haven't read this book. Yet. I do plan on doing so eventually, however. But I did have Dr. LaFarge as my Adavnced Placement English teacher my senior year at the Horace Mann school in the Bronx, and he rocked. I mean, the class was just a lot of fun, and he's a great teacher. So if he wrote this book, it's a pretty safe bet that it's going to be great. Therefore, you should buy this book and make him a rich and famous writer. (English teachers don't get paid all that much, I'll bet, and are rarely celebrities. But Dr. LaFarge deserves to be.)
Book Description
Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Niels Bohr, Einstein. Their insights shook our perception of who we are and where we stand in the world, and in their wake have left an uneasy coexistence: science vs. religion, faith vs. empirical inquiry. Which is the keeper of truth? Which is the true path to understanding reality?
After forty years of study with some of the greatest scientific minds, as well as a lifetime of meditative, spiritual, and philosophic study, the Dalai Lama presents a brilliant analysis of why all avenues of inquiry—scientific as well as spiritual—must be pursued in order to arrive at a complete picture of the truth. Through an examination of Darwinism and karma, quantum mechanics and philosophical insight into the nature of reality, neurobiology and the study of consciousness, the Dalai Lama draws significant parallels between contemplative and scientific examinations of reality.
This breathtakingly personal examination is a tribute to the Dalai Lama’s teachers—both of science and spirituality. The legacy of this book is a vision of the world in which our different approaches to understanding ourselves, our universe, and one another can be brought together in the service of humanity.
Customer Reviews:
a wonderful prospect.......2007-09-16
This is an inexpressibly beautiful book, in which H. H. the Dalai Lama describes a kind of "middle way" between scientific materialism and spirituality without science. If only more people would embrace a combining of scientific endeavor with spiritual values as the Dalai Lama proposes here! We are extraordinarily fortunate that he has made his thoughts available to us at a time when both the wonders and dangers of science grow so rapidly and that he demonstrates the possibility of dialogue between a spiritual leader such as himself with members of the scientific community.
More to the Universe than Science.......2007-07-23
The Dalai Lama's genuine and insightful look at the parallels between the Buddhist faith and Science are quite refreshing. He does a good job demonstrating the limits of scientific observation, while also demonstrating a great appreciation for what Science has to offer Humankind. His comparison of the Buddhist concept of emptiness to the mysteries of quantum physics was fascinating. If you have not delved into the absurdly mysterious workings of quantum physics, I emphatically suggest you do so. I feel many scientists think that they can necessarily explain everything, while the Universe keeps suggesting otherwise.
This was my first exposure to Buddhism, and I found it much more reasonable and open-minded than mainstream Christianity. I am agnostic, but I have not felt that there was a God in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic sense (a tinkerer) since high school. While I am not planning on converting, I find Buddhism a much more palatable religious philosophy (but I digress). I sought this book as a different perspective from the all too often materialistic view point of Scientific Academia (I am a graduate student in biochemistry). In this sense the book was quite successful. I would have given 4 & 1/2 stars if that were an option.
Choppy but brilliant..........2007-07-06
This book lacks the fluidity one might be hoping for but, since it's translated from the words of the brilliant Dalai Lama, you will forgive the choppiness well before finishing the first chapter.
This book explains both the similarities and the differences between Buddhist thought and scientific exploration. The Dalai Lama speaks of the reasons why a religious or spiritual path should not ignore new discoveries in the scientific field but, instead, grow towards incorporating new findings in order to develop more soundly.
It's interesting to hear of the Dalai Lama's research on physics, quantum mechanics, evolution, the big bang hypothesis, the singularity, and more. He has met with some of the most prominent scientific researchers of our time and is truly working towards the unification of spirituality and science as well as the expansion of human understanding.
Though I have always had great respect for the Buddhist path, my admiration for Buddhist principles has increased since reading this wonderful book. Though it may not be an easy read for most, it is well worth the effort.
A Level-Headed Look at Science and Religion.......2007-04-19
As a Zen student with a Ph.D. in physics I often ponder the integration of scientific and religious world views. This is a bit easier for Buddhists because our religion places less emphasis on belief than other faiths do. I see science as a tool that uses measurement to understand nature, while religion deals with ethics and human experience. The Dalai Lama comes to similar conclusions, although more eloquently, in his book "The Universe in a Single Atom."
Both science and religion inspire a sense of wonder and help us understand our place in the cosmos, so comparing them, as the Dalai Lama does in this book, can be worthwhile. He writes well about science. I found his descriptions of physics accurate, although he missed some of the subtleties of the EPR experiment. As expected from a meditator, he points out that science has yet to explore subjective experience. The Dalai Lama draws parallels between the empirical exploration of mental states in the Tibetan tradition and the scientific method. This empiricism first drew me to Buddhism. In fact, my intimate thoughts and feelings have often seemed more immediate and real than some ghostly trace on an oscilloscope that represents "objective reality."
The Dalai Lama gently points out questionable assumptions made by scientific reductionists. For the most part I think his criticisms are valid. Although he's willing to abandon doctrines disproved by modern science, I wonder if the Dalai Lama would be willing to put the Buddhist bedrock teachings of karma and rebirth to the empirical test. If these are truly universal laws, they should be demonstrable by more than personal anecdote. I would have been interested if he'd discussed this more.
This is a fascinating, well-written book. I recommend it to fellow Buddhists and anyone interested in the interaction between science and religion.
Interesting, but somewhat abstruse........2007-01-22
Albert Einstein believed that Buddhism reflected modern science quite well. This book supports that contention. The Dalai Lama is clearly a great thinker with a deep interest in science. The early sections of the book deal with the relationship of Buddhism with relativity theory and quantum physics. The commonality of the Buddhist and modern physics ideas of reality and emptiness is striking, but I found the latter section on consciousness a bit harder to follow.
Reading this book gave me a feeling - but just a feeling - for Buddhism and the depth of Buddhist philosophy. In many ways, it appears to be as complicated and abstruse as modern physics. I would recommend this book to those interested in the more philosophical aspects of modern physics and to those who know about Buddhism and are interested in how it relates to modern scientific thought. However, if you are not interested in either of these subjects, this may not be the book for you.

Pleasant Surprise.......2007-08-10
What a pleasant surprise!!!!!! Southern Living always publishes great cookbooks, which is exactly what I expected here. But, this really isn't a cookbook. It's a great reference book. The lay out is like a food dictionary with an alphabetical listing of cooking terms and ingredients and along the way there are recipes that accompany the ingredient or term being referenced. You will pull this one from the shelf over and over again.
Another winner.......2007-04-22
Southern Living never lets me down. I have never tried a recipe from them that is not outstanding. This book with helpful hints and tips will be much used.
Secrets from the SL Test Kitchens.......2005-12-05
By far one of the best books out there for people who find themselves in the kitchen alot. I have been cooking for too many years to count and I still reference this book frequently. Most of my friends and family own this book because I have recommended it or given it as a gift.
Secrets from Southern Living Test Kitchen.......2005-12-01
I've been cooking for 29 years and still find a need to use this book on a regular basic. I LOVE IT - no home should be without it!!!!
Great recipes.......2004-06-06
I've used several of the recipes in this book with my high school cooking classes. So far, they've all turned out to be really good. Besides recipes, the book also includes information about different foods, not all necessarily Southern although that is its focus. You do have to get used to the alphabetized format--but it also has an index in case you don't know where to go looking for a recipe.

Excellent Book on Cat Massage.......2006-03-03
Maryjean writes a complete nose-to-tail guide to massaging your cat. Its step-by-step instructions are just fantastic. It's a great way to socialize and enjoy your cat.
Great book!.......2002-05-22
I do a lot of cat rescue and adoption and find that even people who've had cats for years don't understand how to touch them so the cat will enjoy it. This book gives easy to follow instructions which can be used to improve anyone's relationship with his or her cat. Cats have an unfair reputation as being aloof. Hopefully this book will change that!
For those who have NEVER had a cat..........2002-05-14
I would only recommend this book to people who have never owned a cat until now. This book is basic common sense and really not worth the money spent if you have already owned cats for years. If you have, then you will find pretty much nothing new in this book.
I'm not buying this book again........2002-01-05
But that doesn't mean this isn't the top cat massage book on the market. Believe me, I have read them ALL and nothing could hold a leaf of catnip to this one. I said I wouldn't buy this book again because my dog had an accident on top of it and I had to throw it away, but since the techniques presented were so easy to follow and so nicely illustrated, I was able to retain the whole book in my head. I plan on buying a cat to go along with this book in due time.
MY CATS LOVE ME EVEN MORE!.......2000-06-01
This is a great book becasue it is a joy to follow, is illustrated to follow easily, and works! My four cats, Maui, Shima, Gumpy, and ChiChi, all love me more because of what this book has allowed me to do - how about a book on dogs - my new lab is feeling left out - GREAT book, if you have a cat - this is the message manual!

Over 600 color photographs feature fashion accessories, toys, dolls, decorative boxes and albums, household and utilitarian articles, grooming aids, and advertising novelties. A chapter on the invention of celluloid and the pyroxylin plastics industry in America, a discussion on care and preservation of celluloid, and a timeline of developments are provided in this vast resource. 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Keith Lauer is the curator of the National Plastic Center and Museum of Leominster and a native of Marietta, Ohio. Following his semi-retirement he pursued his interest in the history of the plastics industry and its artifacts. He entered local politics and served as a city council member for 14 years. He is a member of the American Plastics History Association, the Plastics Historical Society, the Plastics Pioneers Association, and the Antique Comb Collectors Club International. AUTHORBIO: Julie Robinson lives in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York and is the mother of four children. A native of Fayette, Maine, and long-time collector of antiques, in 1991 she enrolled at the Institute for the Study of Antiques and Collectibles in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. As a student, a required research paper began her involvement with celluloid. She is a member of the American Plastics Association, and a freelance writer/photographer. REVIEW: Though many books have been produced on celluloid, this is the first attempt to produce an historically accurate account of the early American pyroxylin plastics industry and the collectible articles produced by the manufacturers thereof. It offers information in word and graphics that will help others share in the satisfaction of collecting and preserving some of the approximately 50,000 different products that have been made of celluloid since its development.

Extremely Informative, Well written, Great Pictures!.......1999-06-10
There clearly has been a need for this book for decades. This book is the culmination of years of work, no doubt! What a treasure to have. I've read them all, but for a collector, this is the only "bible".....

What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book.
Book Description
Rug designs from Turkey, the Caucasus, and Iran, carefully reduced in scale and accurately charted, help you do a variety of handsome small take-along projects. Photographed in color and charted in black and white, the rugs provide needlecrafters with a variety of options beyond the original needlepoint. Beadwork is the latest use for these patterns.
Customer Reviews:
Great for lovers of oriental carpets..........2001-11-02
I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.
Making Miniature Antiques.......2000-09-17
This book is a wonderful introduction not just to making miniature rugs in needlepoint, but also to the subject of Oriental rugs. Each of the 24 rugs is well-photographed so that you can appreciate the detail of the original weaver's design. There is also a clear pattern for use in doing your design that will copy clearly, as well as suggested colors to authentically recreate the design. But the author also provides commentary on the history, themes and features in the rugs he included so that the reader also learns something about what makes these rugs repre- sentatives of the cultures of their makers. I really enjoyed this book!
glorious patterns.......1999-12-31
I don't do needlepoint but used one of the Persian rug charts for a bead knit bag. The charts are big, no small projects here, but they are striking and wonderfully detailed. Really striking color photos.
This is a WONDERFUL book........1999-08-16
This is the book you've been looking for if you want to make pillows, footstools or "whatever" for a room that would welcome orientals. The reproductions are beautiful, the charts are clear. I just love it!
Great book for learning about rugs and making them!.......1999-07-09
I adore this book. While I have owned it for a few years, I have only recently begun to create some of the rugs featured in the book. In the interim, I've enjoyed reading the history of the rugs, looking at the beautiful pictures as well as appreciating the complexity of the designs.
Last but not least, I have also been grateful for Frank Cooper's attitude towards the projects. It is apparent that he does not expect you to slavishly follow his charts to the last detail. If you feel like making some color or design changes of your own, then go ahead. He certainly felt free to make changes as he worked the rugs (after charting them) and he tells the reader all about it in each write-up.

Great read!.......2006-10-20
I had no idea there had been so many UFO sightings, nor so many different varieties of creatures, manimals, etc. This is an intriquing account of the many mysteries and possibilities. The only fault I found with the book is the author's obvious fear that he could be branded a 'nut' if he shared any of the opinions or beliefs he wrote about. He makes it known several times that 'he is simply listing actualy reports'. Other than this small stumbling amongst the pages, the book is very well organized, researched and the writing is engaging.

A cryptozoological classic! .......2005-04-30
This dated paperback is one of the finest texts on cryptozoology I've ever had the pleasure to read -- sadly, most of the dozen or so books on the subject are drivel that may as well have been regurgitated from the tabloids. Not so with this one. A number of "mystery creatures" are discussed at length and in detail. Sasquatch-type creatures make up about a third of the content, and the remainder covers such difficult to classify oddities as "Mothman" (and similar winged entities), the "Jersey Devil", and "Phantom Cats & Dogs" (which includes seance manifestations as well as the myriad types of black panther-type entities encountered throughout North America. Loren Coleman co-wrote this gem with Jerome Clark -- I've read several books by both individual authors, and this is probably the best of them all. There is an abundance of useful information to be found "between the lines" -- make the connections yourself. Check this one out!
