While most modern mysteries set in Alaska concentrate on the damage done to the ecology or the strange personalities who take refuge in this arctic vastness, Sue Henry's books are more straightforward and usually more fun. In such stories as Deadfall and the Anthony Award-winning Murder on the Iditarod Trail, Henry follows in the sled and snowshoe tracks of writers like Jack London and Robert W. Service, who realized that Alaska was the last great frontier of adventure. Her characters, like champion sled-dog racer Jessie Arnold, are welcome throwbacks to a simpler period when physical challenge was a healthy way to measure self-esteem.
Jessie is testing herself in the thousand-mile Yukon Quest race, which follows the old mail trail from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, when one of the other racers is kidnapped and held for ransom. The kidnappers insist that only Jessie can deliver the money, and it has to be on the most dangerous leg of the race. Any attempt to involve the police will result in the victim's death. Of course, the worst blizzard of the year blows up just as the race gets to that point, and it goes without saying that Jessie risks herself and her beloved dog team to recover the victim and capture the bad guys. Even if the thought of somebody shouting "Mush!" fills you with silent laughter, you're sure to be gripped by Henry's ability to recreate the pleasures and perils of an arcane sport in a breathtaking landscape. --Dick Adler
Book Description
The Yukon Quest has the reputation of being the toughest sled dog race in the world, taking teams and mushers through more than a thousand miles of North America's most remote and treacherous territory. Jessie Arnold is ready to meet the challenge.
Jessie and her team of dogs are well prepared for the daring competition, but her one regret is that her longtime friend and lover, Alex Jensen, isn't there to see her off. Alex has been called home to Idaho for a family emergency and Jessie begins the big race without her biggest booster. Well along the trail, Jessie is stunned to learn that a young novice racer she met at the start has been abducted and held for ransom. The girl's distraught father has been warned that no one but Jessie Arnold is to be told--especially not the police. Feeling isolated and alone, Jessie must decide what to do in the face of terrible odds.
It's the contest of a lifetime, yet as the other mushers push toward the finish line, Jessie forges ahead in a race all her own. Unable to ignore the plight of the missing girl, she's in a life and death battle against a desperate, unknown kidnapper who will stop at nothing. Speeding through the twists and turns of the icy, broken trails, Jessie has no time for fear. For somewhere in that vast and lonely landscape, a killer waits for a chance to unleash a murderous rage on anyone who dares to get in his way.

murder to read.......2005-09-09
I've been painfully trying to read all of Sue Henry's novels, but I think this one has finally ended my quest. Murder on the Iditarod Trail and Sleeping Lady were very good novels, but in my opinion, the rest are just dull. Murder on the Yukon Quest tells of more hardships for Jessie Arnold. It is so implausible that so much "Bad Luck" could befall one woman and her dogs. Alex Jensen shows up briefly in bits of the novel just to give poor Jessie something else to worry about. Sorry Sue, I can't bear to read anymore.
Not Good.......2004-03-15
Sue Henry's mystery stories cover ground but her characters are so flat and lifeless that they could be used for ground cover. Even the dogs have more personality.
Good mushing, lousy mystery.......2002-09-17
While billed as "An Alaskan Mystery", this is really a book about life on the trail. Even as that, it fails to satisfy. The plot involves a kidnapping and murder on the Yukon Quest race. I believe it fails to live up to its billing as a mystery because the clues necessary to solve it aren't provided. The author basically tells you one of the culprits, you can sort of guess another by elimination, and the remainder require a TV "Perry Mason" like confession at the end (in his books, Gardner did things differently). This isn't the way a mystery should be written. The book is better when viewed as a mushing story but Ms. Henry's writing style reduces what should be an exciting adventure into painful tedium. After finishing YQ, I re-read Ludlum's "Bourne Identity" which I'd rate 5 stars. The differences in pacing, sentence structure, descriptions, ... were startling yet there's nothing about YQ that shouldn't support as exciting a novel as BI. Even if YQ provided the clues to be a good mystery, it would still be boring and that's its worst flaw. The only reason I gave it a second star was the author does a commendable job providing insight into the life of a dogsled racer. If you want a book that provides these insights, this might be an O.K. choice but if you want either a mystery or a well written novel, hunt elsewhere.
Topnotch thriller.......2002-05-11
Sue Henry is back to her best form in this sixth book of the Alaska Mystery Series. Jessie Arnold decides to forego the Iditerod in order to compete in the less famous but more rugged Yukon Quest. Partway through the race, one of the mushers is kidnapped and Jessie is asked to deliver ransom to the kidnappers while she is in the middle of the race. As always, Henry's descriptions make the reader feel the freezing temperatures and stark beauty of the Yukon and the Alaskan wilderness. She also describes well the feelings of the characters who are put in dangerous situations. Henry deals with Jessie's ambivalent feelings about her relationship with Alex Jensen in this book. This is the best in the series since the first novel, Murder on the Iditerod Trail.
Disappointing entry in this series.......2002-03-01
As usual, Sue Henry does a wonderful job depicting the Alaskan wilderness and the excitement of racing dogs. I loved her racing and dog scenes. However, an important component of the plot didn't make sense - why was Jessie pulled into the kidnapping plot? That was never explained. In addition, I am very disappointed at how the author handled the relationship between Jessie and Alex. Jessie is very unreasonable and self-centered, IMHO. She has a great guy and she doesn't seem to appreciate that or seem to have the ability to love and accept a partner's imperfections and mistakes. She also displayed a disappointing lack of empathy when Alex's father dies. Two of the reasons I had loved this series was I really liked and admired Jessie and I also enjoyed reading about a healthy, positive, loving relationship. After this book, I don't really admire Jessie's handling of intimate relationships. This book made me feel as if the author had decided to abruptly put the focus back on Jessie alone and used the "independent woman" routine to do that, whether it made sense or not. I already have the next book in the series, so will read it, but that will probably be the last time I bother to read a Sue Henry book.

Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.
Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there's even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick Jennings
Book Description
In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Widely recognized as the classic in the field, the book has sold more than a million copies. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder–all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated. In this new book, Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey build on the breakthroughs of Driven to Distraction to offer a comprehensive and entirely up-to-date guide to living a successful life with ADD.
As Hallowell and Ratey point out, “attention deficit disorder” is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds. Tailored expressly to ADD learning styles and attention spans, Delivered from Distraction provides accessible, engaging discussions of every aspect of the condition, from diagnosis to finding the proper treatment regime. Inside you’ll discover
• whether ADD runs in families
• new diagnostic procedures, tests, and evaluations
• the links between ADD and other conditions
• how people with ADD can free up their inner talents and strengths
• the new drugs and how they work, and why they’re not for everyone
• exciting advances in nonpharmaceutical therapies, including changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle
• how to adapt the classic twelve-step program to treat ADD
• sexual problems associated with ADD and how to resolve them
• strategies for dealing with procrastination, clutter, and chronic forgetfulness
ADD is a trait, a way of living in the world. It only becomes a disorder when it impairs your life. Featuring gripping profiles of patients with ADD who have triumphed, Delivered from Distraction is a wise, loving guide to releasing the positive energy that all people with ADD hold inside. If you have ADD or care about someone who does, this is the book you must read.

If only..........2007-08-29
This is one of those books that is both a gift... and very upsetting. - - When I was coming up, the terms ADD and ADHD were just becoming popular... only they were becoming so popular a lot of people were having trouble taking them seriously. - - It seemed like a faddy diagnosis and an excuse to medicate any kid who the television set couldn't babysit for adequately... At that time, I should note that it was clear that I had some kind of learning disability - -yet was a supposed "gifted underachiever" - - meaning I had a supposed "borderline genius" IQ but was too "lazy", "disorganized", "unfocused" even "bored" with school work.
(Back then the only treatments were "punishment", "tolerance" or counseling to deal with the "problem behaviors")
Ironically enough, just after I finished HS the SIMPSON'S became popular, and the term GIFTED UNDERACHIEVER also became a popular term... When I went to school however, bad grades meant STUPID... and there is no doubt, I carry some of the trauma and ridicule today (*Teachers just LOVE calling on ADD kids when they're not paying attention and singling them out.... supposedly to shame them into paying attention, but in reality, as an ADD'er I think it was just one trauma built on another!)
O.K. Years passed... and because of my inability to achieve in conventional settings I can't begin to describe all the problems, conflicts and restlessness I had in life... (and here is where I begin to get back on topic....)
HAVING READ THIS BOOK I actually read chapters of my own life story to such a point that had a been able to go back 28 years and been told "this is your future" - - I would have actually been able to read it and have SEEN my future (as well as perhaps get help.)
Anyway, recently I learned that I had ADHD, and you can have ADHD without being "hyper" - - and in looking deeper I realized that my life was a text book on ADD and it explained everything - - so here's my point:
Dr. Hallowell makes a lot of suggestions and leaves it open to the reader to choose... medication, therapy, coaching, 12 step program - - even yoga, medidation and nutritional supplements. Some may very well be quack therapies, others may be under-explored answers - - throw all bias aside fact is this: Had somebody given me this book 20 years ago... (long pause) I probably would have lost it (
<-- ADD joke.... sorry.) But seriously... had I read this book a long time ago the anecdotes alone would have given me a lot of insight and helped circumvent a lot of pain.
In conclusion:- - No, the book does not offer an all in all 100% proven solves all single cure... but it offers OPTIONS... as well as anecdotes that not only demonstrate what its like to have ADD, but are cathartic to read as well... so I see this book as a gift... Looking back, I now realize I suffered because this wasn't common knowlege when I was a kid... on the other hand ADD is nothing new... there have been unfocused, disorganized yet creative people since the begining of time... now however, a syndrome that describes a condition that many people like me have is being formally studied and treatment options are being explored.
In conclusion, this book not only makes an insightful read, but may very well be a gift waiting to be given.
ORDER MULTIPLE COPIES ! ! !
New Insights into ADD.......2007-07-20
Although I have read extensively on this topic, I thought this book did a good job of summarizing symptoms and uncovering new insights into ADD.
Awesome Life Hack = Highly recommended.......2007-07-09
As a highly stressed ADD'ed individual working in the information systems / design industry, this book has helped me tremendously and I have as a result recommended to many of my friends.
Written by two Harvard Medical school graduates, both of which have ADD, this book demonstrate through real-life examples how to live one's life to the fullest.
Written in ADD-friendly writing style--lists, dialog, etc.--the book serves as an excellent guide to hack your life:
1. How to take advantage of all the pros that come with Attention Deficit Disorder.
2. Steps you can take to manage the cons that come with Attention Deficit Disorder.
Highly recommended.

Lots of great info........2007-05-20
After doing a lot of research on the internet and lots of problems with my 8 year old I was feeling like a failure. I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't sure what. After reading this book it told me all the steps to take to get my son evaluated by a child psychologist and at school. I had no clue where to even go so this book helped me out a lot. There are websites mentioned in the book that help too.

Brew Like a Monk delves into monastic brewing, detailing this rich-flavored region of the beer world. It also examines methods for brewing these unique ales suited to commercial and amateur brewers.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Read.......2007-06-11
Very informative book on the belgian styles in question. The best in the series.
Brew Like a Monk.......2007-05-21
Brew Like a Monk, the third book in a series about Belgium brews, hones in on the strong ales of the country famous for its diverse styles of beer. The first chapters look at the six Belgium Trappist breweries, providing a sense of place, some points of history, details of the beers produced, and comments about the brewing processes.
The next chapters are devoted to the brewery Duvel, the producers of abbey ales, brewers of strong ales, and prominent makers of these Belgium styles in America. A reader interested in brewing can get a sense of visiting each brewery and asking questions about the beers made.
Accompanying the discussions of the beers are lists of ingredients, hop levels, alcohol levels, and other brewing specifications, surmised or known. The lists are somewhat general but enough to enable an experienced brewer to experiment with replication. Specifics about recipes and brewing methods are, understandably, guarded by the breweries.
The later chapters discuss malts, sugars, hops, yeasts, and bottling processes for these Belgium beers, before a final chapter on recipes. Rather than presenting many recipes, the chapter pulls the book together by defining each of the strong ale styles, with comments on brewing and charts showing original gravities, alcohol percentages, color ranges, bitterness levels, and ingredients.
A trip in belgian brewing world.......2007-02-24
Very interesting book for hombrewers because it teach the tricks used for many hundred years by belgian monks and brewers.
Interesting reading, even for non- Belgian beer brewer.......2007-02-19
I'm a long way from trying to home brew Belgian beer, but I do like drinking it occasionally and learning about its history and variations (including American versions) and thinking about how I'd brew it. This book was ideal for those. Good discussions on basics like yeasts and sugars and the techniques used by the different Trappist brewers. Even some good photos
If I decide to attempt brewing it I'll need more step-by-step information, but I'll already understand the background and some important concepts. Perhaps more important, after reading it I'll appreciate more the ones I drink!
monk it up.......2007-02-03
This, in my opinion, is the most interesting of the series. It has a great balance of technical info. and history of the Abbey's and their beers.

A good, if unspectacular, overview of Belgian Ale techniques for homebrewers.......2007-08-20
I thought this was a fairly decent, and above-average offering, from the Classic Beer Style Series. My problem is not so much with the author, or the book, as it is with the somewhat underambitious slant of the series as a whole ... it aimed (back when it was first published) a bit lower than it could have.
Although a bit too brief, the author of this particular volume (book 6 of the aforementioned series) does overview the basic elements of the region: the history of abbey brewing, the primary yeast & microflora strains, specialty ingredients (candi sugar), the role of temperature in stimulating the production of esters and phenols, etc. The author also includes some information on certain advanced techniques: such as dual-strain use (1 for fermentation, one for bottling) for high gravity styles, as well as helpful appendices including a glossary of technical terms, a series of basic no-frills recipes for each of the major Belgian sub-styles, and brief survey of commercial examples.
It's a good, if unspectacular, book.
[Addendum]
I read this book back around 1996, and I've made more than a handful of Belgian sub-styles so far ... none of them taken directly from this book, but I definitely relied on it for some general guidance when constructing my recipes (in accordance with stylistic parameters), and also in controling my fermentation temperatures.
Good Survey of the Styles.......2005-04-16
Rajotte's book may not be the ideal book for the beginning homebrewer, but I don't believe it's intended to be. For that, check out Palmer and many others. Rajotte's book gave me insight into what makes up these enigmatic brews. I brewed his saison recipe and was very pleased with the results, in fact, the beer was very favorably reviewed at a competition as being representative of the style. All in all, this book is a valued part of my brewing library.
Good book, but............2001-02-25
This was a very good but. I have a few complaints. One if your a beginer home brewer forget about understanding most of this book. Two the 1st 3 chapters are mostly history of the country and how they brewed/brew. Very intereseting but it went beyond brewing or anyhting that was related to beer. Not a history book a beer brewing book. Not bad if your into alot of history. Most homebrewers do not use open fermenters and wood fermenters so I feel he did not need to keap bringing that up all the time. And three, the autor realy got deap into the science of microorganizems and brew science. Way over my head and most other people I'm sure. I'm not a pro brewer. Othere than that the bookl was good. Recipes good. He gives all grain 5 gal. Extract 5 gal and all grain 1 barrel (31 US Gal.)recipes.
Belgian Jackpot.......2000-08-02
I have been a homebrewer for five years. I have read a lot of brewing literature. I own eight of the "Classic Beer Styles Series" and have read several others. I will be frank: the Series' quality is not consistent.
Pierre Rajotte's Belgian Ale is one of the best in the series. I have brewed five of the recipes in the book and all have turned out well. When brewing other Belgian recipes I always use the mashing program found on page 83 in the valuable chapter four, "Brewing with a Belgian Brewmaster."
If you are contemplating brewing a Belgian, (not spontaneously fermented that is found in the book "Lambic" of the Series) then get your hands on this book, particularly if you are going to attempt a high gravity Belgian.
A definitive guide to brewing Belgian ales.......1998-12-09
I am a big fan of all of the Styles Series books, but this is by far my favorite. Nearly every brewing book covers British ales and continental lagers in detail, yet offer only the briefest of comments on Belgian ales.
Pierre Rajotte did extensive research for this highly readable book and he covers the history, styles and brewing techniques in just the right level of detail. Of particular value are his tips for working with high gravity beers.
If you brew and you love Belgian ales, I highly recommend this book.

Good book, nice seller.......2007-01-15
This was a great book I was not suprised by the shape of the used book. It was in great condition just as the seller said it was! I do think on all used books the price of shipping is high.
Excellent book for puppy owners!.......2005-12-04
This is one of the most comprehensive and helpful books on puppy behavior and training I have read over the years. It touches upon all of the puppy traits that new owners have the most problems with, i.e. biting, jumping, acting like a maniac, etc. It explains what is normal and what is not for those of us who forget what a "normal" puppy acts like. Most training books are for all ages of dogs; this book is specifically for the puppy. The advice is great and easy to follow. The format and photographs are top quality. I have a new Boston Terrier puppy which is much different than my Golden Retriever. He's a rambunctious puppy, and this book has helped tremendously! I definitely recommend this as the number one book for all puppy owners. I don't normally write reviews, but this book was so amazing, I found that I had to.
WOW! A Must For New Puppy Owners!.......2003-10-05
Fabulous Book! Teoti Anderson provides common sense, easy to impliment, and effective suggestions that any owner (even those with busy schedules) can use. Every puppy owner should have this book in their home. She covers it all - Housetraining, chewing, barking, puppy biting and more. I will certainly recommend this book to puppy owners who come to our training school.
A wealth of sound advice distinguishes this "owner manual".......2003-08-09
Written by Teoti Anderson (a professional dog trainer with eight years of experience), Your Outta Control Puppy is a solidly written, thoroughly "user friendly" instructional guide to training and control-ling common puppy misbehavior, and ranges from housebreaking a precocious pet, to curbing puppy tendencies to chew, bark, nip, bite, or jump up. Full-color photographs, straightforward instructions, numerous examples, and a wealth of sound advice distinguish this "owner manual" and confidently recommend it for anyone owning, or considering the ownership, of a puppy.
For new puppy owners.......2003-07-25
This is an excellent book for a person who just got his first dog. Small, easy language, encouraging. Very good advice. And easy to follow steps. I feel comfortable recommending it to all new puppy owners who come to our training school.

Misleading title, but a nice surprise.......2004-01-02
This is a comprehensive book about Girl Scout dolls that even has sections on paper dolls, stuffed animals, figurines and pins, all relating to the Girl Scouts organization. Included are doll sections on Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds, International Girls Guides, as well as Girl Scout doll clothing. Even though I bought this book because I thought it was about looking ("scouting") for old dolls, and I don't really have a special interest in Girl Scout dolls, I found it interesting. It includes a history of the Girls Scouts and many beautiful photographs of different manufacturer's Girl Scout dedicated dolls and products from 1917 to 2002 with current values.

Miniaturists are creative........2000-03-30
Janet Granger's book is excellent for beginners as it lists materials used to work her designs and explains basic techniques (including stitching, finishing and blocking). The 25 carpet designs are rated simple, experience needed and for experiencd stitchers. Each design has a sharp color photograph and easy to follow color chart (no symbols). Measurements are imperial and metric and there is a metric conversion table. Colors are Appleton's shade numbers with a description of each shade. Designs include: medallion, circular, paisley, rose, Berlin, Italian, Regency, Chinese, Bokhara, Persian and Aubusson rugs.
Book Description

What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book.
Book Description
Rug designs from Turkey, the Caucasus, and Iran, carefully reduced in scale and accurately charted, help you do a variety of handsome small take-along projects. Photographed in color and charted in black and white, the rugs provide needlecrafters with a variety of options beyond the original needlepoint. Beadwork is the latest use for these patterns.

Great for lovers of oriental carpets..........2001-11-02
I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.
Making Miniature Antiques.......2000-09-17
This book is a wonderful introduction not just to making miniature rugs in needlepoint, but also to the subject of Oriental rugs. Each of the 24 rugs is well-photographed so that you can appreciate the detail of the original weaver's design. There is also a clear pattern for use in doing your design that will copy clearly, as well as suggested colors to authentically recreate the design. But the author also provides commentary on the history, themes and features in the rugs he included so that the reader also learns something about what makes these rugs repre- sentatives of the cultures of their makers. I really enjoyed this book!
glorious patterns.......1999-12-31
I don't do needlepoint but used one of the Persian rug charts for a bead knit bag. The charts are big, no small projects here, but they are striking and wonderfully detailed. Really striking color photos.
This is a WONDERFUL book........1999-08-16
This is the book you've been looking for if you want to make pillows, footstools or "whatever" for a room that would welcome orientals. The reproductions are beautiful, the charts are clear. I just love it!
Great book for learning about rugs and making them!.......1999-07-09
I adore this book. While I have owned it for a few years, I have only recently begun to create some of the rugs featured in the book. In the interim, I've enjoyed reading the history of the rugs, looking at the beautiful pictures as well as appreciating the complexity of the designs.
Last but not least, I have also been grateful for Frank Cooper's attitude towards the projects. It is apparent that he does not expect you to slavishly follow his charts to the last detail. If you feel like making some color or design changes of your own, then go ahead. He certainly felt free to make changes as he worked the rugs (after charting them) and he tells the reader all about it in each write-up.

Book Description
Born the son of a sharecropper in 1894 near Ninety Six, South Carolina, Benjamin E. Mays went on to serve as president of Morehouse College for twenty-seven years and as the first black president of the Atlanta School Board. His earliest memory, of a lynching party storming through his county, taunting but not killing his father, became for Mays an enduring image of black-white relations in the South. Born to Rebel is the moving chronicle of his life, a story that interlaces achievement with the rebuke he continually confronted.

Another great one.......2006-08-24
This was a wonderful book, its a wonder how Dr. Mays overcame all the things that was holding him back. This is one you should read.
Excellent!!!!!.......2001-02-09
Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays (1894-1984) was one of the most prominent educators, social reformists and civil rights and religious leaders of his time. This book magnificently captures a time in American history that is far too scarcely documented: the Post-Civil War segregation era, leading up to 1970. This book gives a very personal description of Dr. Mays's struggles for dignity, respect and integrity, while simultaneously touching upon the collective struggle of African-Americans. I recommend this book for anyone seeking a greater understanding of African-American and American history. Mr. Mays was a pioneer in social reform and civil rights, was the President of Morehouse College from 1940-67, was a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and held the honor of being the "First" to hold several important and powerful positions in private and public organizations. He was a giant among men. I assure you that this is one of the best autobiographies that you will read.

Book Description
Harriet Boyd was the first woman to lead an archaeological excavation in the Aegean. At a time when few women travelled on their own, she discovered, excavated and published an account of the Minoan town of Gournia in Crete. She was the first woman to lecture to the Archaeological Instituite of America - ten times in fourteen days in January 1902. While prominent as a lecturer and teacher, archaeology was only a part of her life: in 1897 she was nursing with the Red Cross in the Greco-Turkish war, in 1915 she was nursing Serbian typhoid victims on Corfu, and by 1917 she was in Northern France setting up a rehabilitation centre within sound of the front. While the past and its arts were her profession, the present and the future were her passionate interest - whether local social problems in her home town of Boston or international affairs which took her to lunch with Mrs Roosevelt at the White House. Mary Allsebrook's light-hearted and extremely readable account of her mother's extraordinary experiences shows Harriet Boyd to be truly one of America's pioneers.
