Customer Reviews:
Another little gem!.......2007-03-14
Ms. Thompson's Gaslight Series is full of little gems and this book is another. This is the fourth in the series, and in it we see Sarah's and Frank's relationship is progressing a bit further. We also have them trying to find out who killed an opportunistic woman. Sarah's neighbour, Mrs. Ellsworth's son looks like he's been set up to take the fall for the murder, and Sarah knows that he didn't do it. She enlists Frank's help to try to uncover who the real killer is. The plot is a bit predictable, but the characters are very likeable. This is a series well worth the time of any historical mystery fan. I especially like the setting. Turn of the century New York City must have been a fascinating place.
4th in Gaslight Mysteries is best so far!.......2006-08-03
Murder on Washington Square by Victoria Thompson is the 4th book in the Gaslight series featuring Victorian era midwife Sarah Brandt and New York Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. This was absolutely the best book so far in the series. When Sarah's neighbor, Mrs. Ellison's son is charged with the murder of his mistress, Sarah jumps to help prove his innocence, much to Malloy's frustration. Thompson does a terrific job of creating mood and dropping hints about the real murderer's identity without giving the game away. The chemistry between Malloy and Sarah is top-notch. I just love how Thompson has been inching their relationship along. The climax is edge-of-your-seat gripping and what happens afterwards will thrill fans of the series. She even throws in a twist at the very end to make the reader long for the next book. Murder mysteries don't get much better than this.
Good Job.......2003-02-02
Nice addition to the series. The plot is a bit obvious at times, but moves along nicely and the characters are developed well. Recommend
sweet & spunky.......2002-10-31
Victoria Thompson's Gaslight mysteries are one of my favorite series. Sarah is sweet and spunky (in a *good* way, honest!) with a charming sense of humor in addition to her stubborn sense of justice. The romance between this wonderful character and Frank really drives the stories for me, but the mystery is also excellent. This installment in the series deepens all the characters and fleshes out the time period even more lushly than before. If you're a fan of historical mysteries and haven't tried these books yet, you're really missing out.
Best of the Series.......2002-08-25
Thompson is getting the hang of mystery writing. This is an enjoyable book, more for the look into turn-of-the-century New York than the mystery. I especially like the hint that Brandt may someday find some closure to the death of her husband.
I hope Thompson refrains from coupling Brandt and Molloy. I'd rather see a better developed mystery than read about two blushing social opposites at the turn of the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Useful information on Orgotek and the FSA.......2003-11-25
America Offline was written like the other Psi Order/ Area books of Trinity. The color section contains general information that most people in the game world would have access to. The black and white section has information that is mostly for storytellers.
The sections on Orgotek were good. The subdivisions provide more choices for PCs who don't want to play a corporate drone or an engineer. Orgotek's goals and beliefs make it very PC-friendly. It generally isn't a big evil corporation like Pentex. The section on alternative Electrokinetic powers was very interesting. The technology section was rather light considering the fact that Orgotek makes a ton of neat bio/hardtech gadgets.
The section on the FSA gets the job done but wasn't very thorough. It does drive home that the U.S. is now a fascist empire where the rich are at the top and the masses are down at the bottom. There should have been more information on culture and the day-to-day activities of the citizens. It seemed like all the people in the FSA are either drones from Orwell's '1984', anarchists, or violent nomads. If that is what the people are like then the section on the FSA did its job. Also, there should have been more information on the FSA's Warmachine agenda. I wanted to know when the war of aggression will end. Perhaps the FSA's war will never end.
Despite some of my complaints this is a good book. It is a must for storytellers who want to run a Trinity game with Orgotek or in the FSA.
Not a bad Buy.......1999-08-05
really a good idea for a N America Campaign. Gives new powers to Elecktrokinetics. Great thing to have!

Helpful Guide to the Hot Stuff.......2001-09-04
David Dewitt has put out several useful books on peppers. This guide is useful to identify the many many varities and cultivars of hot peppers. While you may not be able to find the seeds to all those cultivars, the book is very useful and the color photos are excellent. Sections divide the different classifications of peppers. If you are into peppers this book may be a necessary reference on your shelf. Also usefuls is Dewitt's book The Pepper Garden.
Review by a very satisfied customer.......2000-05-31
I have recently become interested in peppers and chilis of all types, and my thirst for knowledge on the subject led me to buy books. I have bought some 10 books on the subject, and although other books may appear more glossy and have more 'tales' or recipes (this book has neither, nor is it intended as such), this book has a wealth of colour pictures of just about every conceivable chili. Whilst not claiming to have all varieties within it, it gives a good, structured view on the pepper (capsicum) families and provides a quick and easy reference for identification and description of most varieties. Of all the books I have this is always the first I turn to for information. Well worth the money.
Fantastic book but ..........1998-02-17
After reading "The Pepper Garden" also by Dewitt and Bosland I bought "Peppers of the World: An Identification Guide". The book gives you a very good overall view of the whole pepper family on the planet. Nice photos and good descriptions. However two things are wrong.
First: For each pepper the authors should also have included a photo of the plant and the flower. Without that identification in many cases is almost impossible as many pods resemble each other very much indeed.
Second: The metric conversion chart in the back of the book is wrong. Centimeters and inches must have changed places. The way it is now a 10 inch pepper like for instance Numex Big Jim is about the lenght of a thumb!! I dont think New Mexican commercial growers would like that. Keep that in mind if the publishers are contemplating a new edition.
But otherwise - thanks for a great book which is a must for all pepper fans.

A dependable and substantial reference and value guide........2000-03-04
Collecting Original Comic Strip Art! offers the collector and dealer a detailed historical account of the development and role of comic strip art as a cultural icon and as an authentic American art form. Author Jeffrey Ellinport provides a description of the creative process, terminology, and methods used in comic strip art production; tips for starting, building, and protecting a collection of this ephemeral and delicate art work; an up-to-date price guide organized by artist and by comic strip; recommended readings and detailed listings of permanent comic strip art exhibits, websites, and syndicates. Anyone wanting to explore this fascinating area of memorabilia collecting must begin by carefully reading Collecting Original Comic Strip Art!, the first dependable and substantial reference and value guide dedicated specifically to illustrated comic strip story panels and artwork.
A great resource for the serious Strip Art Collector.......2000-01-22
As a newer collector I needed some help in learning about approximate values of hard to find "off beat" Strips. This book helped me with that and more! Besides values, the author does a fine job on discussing various aspects of the field that will help any type of collector. I most highly recommend this book.
Good Intentions Do Not a Classic Make.......1999-09-17
Upon entering the field of Collecting Original Art, too many issues are not immediately obvious and the author does not appear to this decade-tenured collector to be well versed in the subtler issues and the titles and illustrations shown from the authors collection bear this out. The overview is well reasoned, however, and appear well meant, but do not address the great classic strips, the education and research that goes into World Class Collecting, and the examples (many of the finer and classic strip titles of which I've owned and which came to both Russ Cochran or Illustration House through my resources) examples of Originals are not up to par with the finest the field has to offer, by any standard. That written, and outside of the pricing section, which truly begs complaint, the book is on balance a starting point for start up collectors, and does stress, within its limits, the issues of specuation and having a true collecting spirit. Good start, but needs serious revision in future editions
Great for novices and collectors alike........1999-05-27
While this book is obviously geared for the serious collector, it has a lot of very intersting tid-bits, strips, and other information for the Sunday newspaper reader who is casually interested in the Comics.
An excellent book for comic strip collector........1999-04-21
I found this book to be well written and extremely informative. To a collector as myself, the book is an invaluable research tool that I use when deciding on which pieces to purchase for my collection.

Some info about the book.......2007-01-10
Quilted Clothing is as contemporary as the latest fashion and as timeless as the ethnic garments of half a dozen cultures. It is as elegant as a vest of lace and satin and as cozy as boots to wear by the fireside. It is as traditional as grandmother's antique quilt and as dramatic and individual as you want it to be. In her latest book, Jean Ray Laury - designer, teacher, and author-explains how to make over 100 quilted clothes. Every aspect of constructing the garments is thoroughly discussed and illustrated in the 160 pages and 63 color photographs, from choosing and adapting commercial patterns to finishing the seams of your reversible garment. How-to instructions, innumerable diagrams, and patterns are used to explain the techniques of quilting, pieceing, patchwork, strip quilting, applique, Seminole patchwork, trapunto. You become the designer as you learn from the instructions and the many examples. Design chapters filled with patterns and inspiration begin with Vests, the simplest and most versatile of quilted garments. A variety of techniques and patterns also fills a chapter on Jackets. Kimonos & Such, the traditional and exotic Japanese wraps, are demonstrated, and several examples illustrate the variety of effects that can be achieved from this simple, virtually straight article of clothing. Coats provide the grand surface and breadth for quilting, while the very techniques of padding and quilting make the coats so warm and practical. Dresses, Skirts, & Tops provide the opportunity for using quilting motifs and methods to individualize your wardrobe. Children's Clothes are particularly pleasurable to make because children revel in the softness of the quilting and respond so joyously to the special' things you do for their bright and cheerful clothing. And finally, a chapter on Accents & Accessories provides special projects: comfortable boots, elegant eyeglass cases, warm mittens, purses and totes, even jewelry. Quilting has long been one of the most popular of all crafts. With Quilted Clothing the quilter will be able to bring economy and practicality to her joyous hobby.

A treasure trove of wearable art/pieced clothing techniques!.......2001-07-07
I love the idea of "wearable art" and one-of-a-kind fashion, and Mary Mashuta's book really fits into that niche.
Mashuta's book is a compendium of instructions and design ideas for creating clothing using the patchwork and piecing techniques normally associated with quilting. Her designs and methods (as photographed in the book) produce clothing a little funkier and "ethnic" than much of what I've seen; usually when quilting techniques are adapted to clothing, the results have a kind of "Little House on the Prairie" look to them, in my opinion.
Mashuta generally relies on simple geometric shapes and works her art in the folding, piecing and decorative stitching. Many of the clothing designs she has worked up for this book seem to be borrowed from classic Asian styles.
Although I like a lot of what's offered in this book, much of it is fairly complex; there are not a lot of smaller projects featured here. Theoretically, a crafter could adapt the techniques to smaller projects, but the novice might have trouble envisioning how to do this.
I do like the clothing pictured in the book, but many of the colors have gray or brown undertones and don't really excite the reader like some other more vividly photographed needlework books. While I find myself coming back to this book time and again for ideas (and I will continue to), it's not one of my favorites. I'd definitely recommend this for the serious crafter or creative sewer; I would not recomment this book for someone with little needlework experience.

A machine quilter's dream.......2000-07-21
Terrific first book by this lady. She's done a nice job of sharing the techniques she's used to win national competitions and excite people she's taught all over the country. But perhaps I don't have perspective... I'm married to her and lived through the creative process! If you're into machine quilting or myriads of other embellishment techniques, take a look and add your comments!

Customer Reviews:
Took me by the hand and led me through screenprinting!.......2007-09-12
[...]Have you ever tried the silkscreen printing process? An excellent, well thought out book that can get you started is Simple Screenprinting (Basic Techniques & Creative Projects) by Annie Stromquist, published by Lark books in 2004. (ISBN 1-57990-490-4). The eye of an artist is evidenced throughout this book, which is a visual joy, filled with clear, colorful photographs and appropriate use of "white space."
Assuming the reader is a total novice to screen printing, Ms. Stromquist begins with a brief history of screen-printing, then describes the tools and inks that are used. Next, selection and preparation of the screen itself is clearly described. This is followed by an illustration showing attachment of the frame to special hinges and backboard. As the method is further developed, a paper stencil for defining the printed image is shown and the first project, a stenciled postcard, is begun. The more advanced printmaker will find later in the book that photo emulsion preparations allow a simple and accurate means to create a screen that offers the ability to print photographically derived images. The reader is shown how to register the print so that multiple screens may be used in order to print with different colors and to ensure the image is properly aligned. A very clearly descriptive section shows exactly how to use registration pins and tabs to maintain correct and accurate image registration. The reader quickly discovers that many parallels exist between overcoming screen-printing problems and intaglio or lithographic printing problems that use multiple color plates. This book goes beyond printing only on paper by exploring and explaining how screen-printing is done on fabric. One such project shows how to create place mats or even how to print aprons for a group (maybe even Maryland Printmakers print shop aprons!)
Traditionally, this method had been called "silk screen" printing, but polyester material is now used in place of silk simply because polyester is more readily available and far less costly. Density of the weave of the fabric will dictate the screen's ability to register detail and the system of grading the screen fabric densities is also explained.
Opaque or transparent inks used for screen-printing may be either water- or oil-based. Ms. Stromquist explains how to test the inks using colors with different levels of transparency and shows how the colors combine to create different color results when they are printed one color over another.
There are twenty-six screen-printing projects included in the book. Each one uses a different method to produce the image. The projects begin with a simple single color stenciled post card. This teaches the basic skills and acquaints the user with the tools and technique. Each project requires using a new technique, and as the artist proceeds through the book, competency is developed as the level of sophistication in printmaking increases. Each new technique becomes the basis for learning the next level. T-shirts, Aprons for a Group, posters, a greeting card, and photo-booth portrait are all part of the succession of learning projects. By the time you have walked your way through the projects, you will be a well-qualified screen-print maker and well on your way to producing some interesting new art.
Making difficult and complex concepts so very easy to understand are hallmarks of an experienced and skilled teacher / author. It is a joy to discover a book that is useful, friendly, and easy to understand, and this book is all of that.
Ideal Intro to Screenprinting.......2007-09-02
This book is well set out with plenty of colour photographs stepping the reader through the processes of screen printing. Written instructions and advice is thorough and simple to understand. Projects are ideal for a novice and provide ideas for imagination. The inclusion of the gallery of other works is inspiring.
Great introductory book.......2007-06-14
I recently decided to take up screen printing and bought this book to help me learn the techniques. I've been very pleased with it so far. The instructions are simple to follow and explained well. There are also images illustrating most steps described in the text, useful for visual people. The author goes through the basics, such as choosing a suitable screen and paint and the equipment necessary, so it's easy to get started right away. The specific projects outlined in the book are fun and interesting, though perhaps best used as inspiration for your own designs. Best of all, the author describes several different ways to make prints, including some that don't involve any toxic chemicals.
This book might not be appropriate for advanced screen printers as I'm sure the information contained in it is pretty simplistic. However, it's great for someone like me who knew nothing about screenprinting before I bought this book. I've created some really great images following the instructions of the authors, and I couldn't be happier with the results.
screenprinting book good for hooby crafters.......2007-02-01
As a screenprinting teacher, I am always on the lookout for good screenprinting manuals to recommend to my students. Unfortunately, this is not one. It is an OK book if you know NOTHING about screenprinting and want to do it for a hobby to make some cards or do projects with your kids, but I do not recommend it for someone who is looking to get into screenprinting more seriously.
Told me everything I needed to know!.......2006-11-04
This book was so helpful! My husband and I are trying to start a t-shirt company and we didn't know were to start. This book showed us all of the different techniques and really spelled out how to do each of them. It was very easy to understand, gave us some great ideas and it even showed us how to make our screen from scratch. I would recommend getting this book if you are wondering how to screen print.

Book Description
Professional educator, Zionist activist, and feminist leader--Puah Rakovsky (1865-1955) was born under the Russian Empire and died in the independent country of Israel. No mere bystander to history, Rakovsky was an activist who assumed leadership roles in the public arenas of education and politics, founding the first Jewish girls school in Warsaw and a national Jewish women s organization in 1920s Poland. In her memoir Rakovsky reflects on the position of Jewish women in her time and gives her personal and political perspective on central events of modern Jewish history from her childhood until her emigration to the Land of Israel in 1935.
