Book Description
Meg Langslow has found herself in more than one odd situation (more like ten or fifteen): She has learned to take what comes. What has currently come is a peculiar kind of croquet, very different from the polite contest played on a summer lawn. Extreme Croquet requires a terrain of several acres, in this case populated with small animals, poison ivy, and livestock. After managing, with the help of Spike the Dog, to persuade a placid cow off the next wicket, Meg loses her ball in a briar patch, trips and slides down a minor cliff, thereby being the one to discover a dead woman at the bottom. The womans head has been bashed in, possibly illustrating one of the many additional uses for a croquet mallet. But then, maybe not And so begins another episode in the kind of delectable madness for which Donna Andrews has won so many honors, not to mention laughs galore. Donna Andrews introduced Meg and Michael in her Malice Domestic Contest-winning first mystery, Murder with Peacocks, and readers are still laughing. This novelswept up the Agatha, Anthony, Barry, a Romantic Times award for best first novel, and a Lefty for funniest mystery. With No Nest for the Wicket, Andrews borrows momentum from her previous books and delivers another riotous and engrossing read.
Customer Reviews:
Escape reading.......2007-09-01
Donna Andrews has a lively imagination and has created a set of memorable characters. I was startled to learn that she did not create the sport of Extreme Croquet for her book as the game seems to have her madcap sense of humor. However, the game actually exists. The mystery is almost incidental to the humor, but this is a good read.
Great.......2007-08-10
As usual, Donna Andrews has managed to make murder funny. Reading about Meg and her family always makes me laugh even though there is a murder involved.
Interesting but Not as Fantastic as Previous Books.......2007-07-23
I had really begun to believe that Donna could write about anything under the sun - a wait at a doctor's office, an afternoon of painting the walls - and have it end up hilarious. I was just SO pleased with the last three books she created, and the environment and characters she had populated them with.
With this book, Donna comes down to earth. That's not to say I disliked the book. It was quite interesting, set in a tournament of eXtreme croquet in her back yard. You get the fun family members as well as a collection of newcomers to interact. Still, the previous books were just so amazing, with numerous laugh out loud moments and great insights. With this book, things were "fine". It's almost as if Donna had gotten so used to her great successes that she put things on cruise control a bit.
One thing which bugs me about these books is that Meg has been dealing with dead bodies repeately over the years - but every time she encounters a new one it's as if she's never seen one before at all. The cop in this one - a cop who knows her from previous stories - even makes a comment that she shouldn't be squeamish because she has a doctor for a father. How about she shouldn't be squeamish because bodies fall dead around her at a regular rate! I'm not sure I understand why this is an issue for the writer. When we read about other mystery series, we know the main characters have seen death. We know it's a series. There's no need to pretend in every book of Nancy Drew that she has just become a detective and has never faced danger before. I don't see a need here to treat Meg as an innocent every time out.
I also found the plot here a little repetitive compared with previous plots. I knew right away who the killer was and then simply had to wait for the story to unfold to find that out. As usual, Meg doesn't realize the truth until the last possible moment. I suppose you could say her charm is that she 1) feels grumpy about finding bodies and 2) blunders Clouseau-like around until the killer prepares to take her out. I just wish she'd do a little better with her investigation. She is, after all, an intelligent woman. Some of the clues she misses are pretty obvious.
Still, it's nice to see the progression of some of the characters, and the flaws in others. These aren't perfect people by any stretch of the imagination - but they still get along and love each other. It gives hope to the rest of us!
zany as usual, but not top notch.......2007-07-07
I read "No Nest for the Wicket" in an afternoon and enjoyed it. I didn't have any laugh-out-loud moments from it as I have in previous episodes. This one is a bit heavier on plotting and lighter on Meg's family than previous Meg Lanslow mysteries. To me, her family, their antics, and Meg's relationship with them are the stars of the series. Meg and Michael are there, but nothing of their relationship is advanced and Meg's character seems to be in "hunt the McGuffin" mode with no depth or development. I think the titles of the mysteries have become a bit of a burden on the author, as so often "clever" titles end up being. The bird associations have become a further and further stretch from the storyline. I hope the author never completely lets the title drive the story rather than the other way around as in some series mysteries I've read (and dropped). The mystery in the book was pretty good, though I found the motive of the killer not at all well drawn. The story wasn't concluded with much attention or detail, which I find annoying. Authors (or their publishers) seem much more interested these days in giving "preview chapters" of the next book rather than doing a good job wrapping up the one you paid for!
Right up there with the rest of the series.......2007-07-03
Meg and her circle are on top of their wacky game in this fun mystery. What a great introduction to extreme croquet. I expect a Duck fan club to appear on the Internet somewhere.

In the village of Gaud, the young warrior Kern, the "Wolf-Eye," has been exiled, an outcast from clan and kin. It is he who is fated to confront the dreaded Grimnir. But as loyal friends and desperate fighters rally to his side, even Kern does not know whether he leads his people to deliverance, or certain death.

excellent book to traipse to... .......2007-04-26
I read this book a couple years ago while I was deployed to the middle east. When I stubbled across it in a pile of free books the library was giving away to increase morale. I was excited at first, as I am a big fan of Robert E. Howard, but after reading the first couple of incredibly boring chapters, finishing the book just because I had started it soon became the only thing carrying me to the next chapter.
The author just plain sucks, if this is all that is required to become a published author of fiction, then my daughter's retarded pet hamster has an excellent shot at writing the next great Age of Conan Trilogy.
Never have I seen the word "traipse" used so many times in one literary work (and yes, calling this a literary work is quite a stretch. "We traipsed down the hill, we traipsed up the mountain, I traipsed out of the way, we traipsed all damn day long because the author apparently doesn't own a thesaurus!"
Seriously, reading this book became more of a game for me, just to see how many times the author would use the word "traipse" per chapter.
Despite all the traipsing, I did indeed manage to finish the book, and it had but one effect on me. That effect was that I decided never to pick up another book in the Age of Conan storyline.
Unless your mental capacity is limited to that of 3rd grader, I suggest traipsing to the store and purchasing something other than this dreadful book.
A new series for true fans of the orginal Conan stories. 4.5 stars.......2006-01-11
Fans of Howard's orginal Conan stories gotta love the idea of these new books, Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures. Howard's Hyborian Age was such an awesome concept. He created such a richly detailed world and it was done with such passion that it was easy to believe that it could have been an age forgotten by history. As great as Conan was,( and Kull before), I always felt there were many, many other tales to be told.
Since the Legend of Kern is a tale of Conan's own homeland, Cimmeria, it's the perfect story to start this new series.
Outlawed by his clan, Kern struggles against superstitious prejudice and clan politics to unite the Cimmerian tribes. The legendary indomitable will of the Cimmerians may prove to be their downfall, as they would just as soon kill each other as they would the invading hordes.
While a lot of different authors have written Conan stories, only a few really seem to get Robert Howard's concept. Loren Coleman proves to be one of those few. The authors for the other trilogies for the Hyborian Adventures series to come, should pay close heed to the great job Coleman has done with Legends of Kern.
This series is an excellent addition to any fantasy collection!.......2005-12-28
Non-traditional structure ... but FANTASTIC story telling!!!
You can get a synopsis anywhere so I'll cut to the chase... BUY THIS BOOK NOW! Kern is the most interesting character to wander Cimmeria since Conan himself. Take a little John Carter then add a dash of Tarzan, a pinch of Elric and a hardy handful of Conan (If he doesn't cut your hand off first) and you have Kern. I am already looking forward to more of Coleman and Kern in the future and, being a long-suffering Wheel of Time Fan, I hope it is sooner than later!
I have to agree with others who have reviewed this work - I was thrown off by the grammar and usage for the first chapter or two... most of the previous Conan authors wrote pieces which tried to mimic REH in style. Coleman trades, at times, grammar for a feeling of urgent action. I almost put the book down after the first 30 pages or so but kept with it to see where the story led and quickly became a fan of Kern; I bought the other two books in the series within days and read them eagerly.
I have the good fortune to own and to have read (at least twice) all of the Conan novels and collected editions published in the last 34 years (yeah, that's almost scary in and of itself) and I found myself caught up in a different but just as excited way reading Coleman as I ever have been reading Howard, DeCamp, Jordan or Carpenter. Not exactly textbook writing but darn ggod writing nonetheless.
The Fragmented Kern.......2005-12-20
I found this book difficult to read because of all the sentence fragments. At least one out of three sentences are fragmented throughout this novel (and the series). While I understand that the use of a sentence fragment can be effective when used sparingly, this author has written an entire trilogy comprised almost entirely of fragments!
Honestly, it makes the author look as though he has no command of the English language at all.
His Cimmerians wear ponchos, which seem wildly out of place for the culture, and the author misidentifies the Shemites as a black race. Twice in the trilogy he mentions the ebony skin of Belit - a woman Robert E. Howard described as having ivory skin.
The fragments really ruined the novel.
Great short read.......2005-11-25
This book was suprisingly good. I didn't expect much and was blown away with the action described by the author. If your looking for a quick read with a good story arc, then this is your read.

The story of how - and why - these men survived unfolds and becomes the phenomenon that was The Mescalero Project
Customer Reviews:
Mescalero Magic.......2007-06-13
The Mescalero Project is a gem. The plot is one of the most creative I have ever read. Doug Buchs writes from a knowledge base of "facts" that is extraordinary. The book had one message to me throughout - keep reading. Once you begin, you do not want to put it down. How these trapped men learn to live (and die) together, how they create a "life" under the most trying of circumstances, and how they come to grips with the fact that the rest of the world (with the exception of a villain) has forgotten about them makes this a thriller and roller-coaster read. I have recommended this book to friends who are serious readers. Hats off to Buchs on a spellbinding first novel.
Not A Book to Pass Up .......2005-09-06
The Mescalero Project had me at the synopsis. An old abandoned prison with inmates trapped within caught my interest and I was not let down. The book is a wonderful mix of futuristic suspense, intrigue and mystery. The story swings between the past and the present as the last surviving inmate tells the story, but Mr. Buchs made it flow; a difficult undertaking for a book covering several decades.
Excellent New Author!.......2005-04-26
Doug Buchs excels in "The Mescalero Project", his first published novel. This book literally had me on the edge of my seat numerous times and was a page turner - I read half the book in one sitting. This book is written in the present when Jake Moss discovers the long-forgotten prison, with glimpses into what happened 50 years in the past through the diaries of inmate - and leader - James Stryker. Don't pass this one up!

Southern California Cooking from The Cottage captures the romance, the relaxation, and the good life of The Cottage itself. Included are the recipes that have made The Cottage one of Southern California's most beloved restaurants with breakfast items such as muffins, coffee cakes, Greek, Italian, and seafood omelets, Belgian waffles, and oatmeal pancakes. From the lunch and dinner menu there are light Southern California seafood and pasta dishes, signature soups and salads, as well as traditional American classics. The book includes an eight-page color insert.
The Cottage is the ninth restaurant to be chosen by Jane and Michael Stern for their Roadfood cookbook series, which celebrates the finest regional restaurants in the United States.

Hideous eyestrain and worst index on the planet!.......2007-03-20
This book might be fine if the publisher had not chosen to print the ingredients in pale yellow (making them IMPOSSIBLE to read). That was undoubtedly to discourage photocopying, but defrauding the innocent customers who legally purchased the book should not have been an option. Also, it is almost impossible to find anything in the horrible index; it was a though they didn't want you to locate their recipes. In short, a mammoth disappointment.
Excellent!!.......2005-09-03
Eating at the Cottage in La Jolla is a real treat and I'm just so happy with this cookbook!! So far everything I've made from it has turned out to be top notch. I had guys begging me for the brownie recipe. My personal favorite is the french toast! You won't be disappointed with this book. It's one of the few cookbooks I actually use on a regular basis!

Anthropologies of Art (Clark Studies in the Visual Arts)
ASIN: 0500280975 |
Book Description
Tribal art has been one of the greatest inspirations for twentieth-century Western artists. Picasso, Matisse, Ernst, and Brancusi responded in unforgettable ways to masks, sculpture, and other forms of indigenous African, Oceanic, and American art. The politics of this relationship have long been a matter of contention: is it a cross-cultural discovery to be celebrated, or just one more example of Western colonial appropriation? This revelatory book looks at the distinctive situation of the settler society--countries in which large numbers of Europeans have displaced, outnumbered, but never entirely eclipsed native peoples. In this dynamic of dispossession and resistance, settler artists and designers have drawn on tribal motifs and styles, while powerful indigenous art traditions have been used to assert the presence of native peoples and their claim to sovereignty. Cultural exchange proves to be a two-way process, and an unpredictable one: much contemporary indigenous art draws on modern Western art, while affirming ancestral values and rejecting the European appropriation of tribal cultures.

SUPERB OVERVIEW OF OCEANIC ART.......2001-01-29
The book gives an excellent overview of the art in the Oceanic region with special emphasis on New Guinea.
The contributions are organised geographically and then by tribes. The book not only depicts extraordinary and seldom documented works of art from museums and private collections but also provides valuable information on the ethnological and social context of the works displayed.
Photographs and layout are outstanding and the printing is of the highest quality.
It is a must for all those interested in the art of the region or in tribal art in general.

Book Description
Andrew Sayers examines a considerable body of drawings produced by Aboriginal artists between 1803 and 1903. Never before collected as a genre, these works are retained in museums, libraries, or private hands and have rarely been displayed. Often regarded as inauthentic art because of their
stylistic borrowings and fluctuations, they enjoy a unique status as products of the interaction between Aboriginal society and the British colonizers. The largest group of drawings comes from the hands of three artists--Tommy McCrae (c1823-1901), William Barak (c1824-1903), and Ulladulla Mickey
(c1820-1891), who produced their drawings in the 1880s and 1890s. Visually these drawings are varied, but they possess many of the aesthetic qualities which characterize contemporary Aboriginal art, displaying intense vitality and an acute understanding of flora and fauna.

Book Description
In 1989, three years after retiring from the NFL, Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell was diagnosed with panic and anxiety disorder. From that point on, his life would never be the same. In his autobiography, Campbell reveals himself as a powerful young man who, with his parents and ten siblings, struggled to make ends meet working the famous rose fields of Tyler, Texas. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Texas, won the Heisman Trophy, and eventually became a three-time winner of the NFL's MVP award. Earl Campbell has been invited to speak to physician and patient groups across the country about his experience with panic and anxiety, and in speaking out, he has saved lives by inspiring and motivating others to seek help for this disorder.
Customer Reviews:
Courage.......2005-08-10
I turned 40 six months ago and suffered my first panic attack shortly aftewards. I was rushed to the hospital, thinking it was a heart attack. I was lucky. The ER doc diagnosed it correctly as a panic attack.
I went to my family physician the next day and he gave me a thorough exam, then recommended a psychiatrist to help me with my panic attacks. He also recommended I read The Earl Campbell Story. I had no idea who Earl Campbell was, since I am not a sports fan but I read the book. Mr. Campbell, your book really helped me. I found the front of the book very helpful, because it described who you were and how great a football player you were. Then when the panic attacks started, I thought I was reading about my own experience.
I think it took a tremendous amount of courage for you to step forward and write this book. It really helped me and I can't thank you enough.
Inspiration to Me!.......2002-03-12
I thought the book gave good detail on Panic Disorder and how it can affect anybody. The first couple of chapters went on to long about how he grew up and gave no information on his disorder until later in the book. I believe the book should have began when he started to develope Panic Disorder.
disappointing.......2000-05-15
Be forewarned that panic does not come into this book until page 83 (of 208). Also be forewarned that it's written at maybe a sixth-grade reading level. (Neither of these is necessarily a bad thing.)
It's a simplistic and lengthy testimonial. There are some reconstructed dialogues that feel artificial, some of the chronology is hard to follow, and people appear out of nowhere or disappear after being identified in detail.
The first 82 pages are mainly football, with lots of numbers and stats. There's an entire chapter on his sausage business that reads like a promotional pamphlet: "All of our meals are precooked and specially sealed with a newly developed technology to keep them fresh. Customers only have to pop them into a microwave oven for three minutes before serving. These meals have become big sellers for us because they are convenient and taste great" etc. (p. 153). And not only that, but "Today I feel as confident about my ability to make a great-tasting meat product as I used to feel about my ability to run with the football. I think both are God-given talents" (p. 153). There's nothing to tie this to the supposed theme of the book.
We get glimpses of Campbell's "pride" (anger at a doctor's suggestion that he try Prozac, sudden disgust with one who asks him to ingest caffeine as an experiment, lashing out at doctors who, attempting to arrive at a diagnosis, inquire whether he uses drugs), glimpses of his warm feelings, and mere hints at "fear of failure" and an "emotional man". Just when he starts to tell us something interesting, he quits and moves on.
You get the feeling this guy wants to talk about it but he doesn't want to talk about it.
This is also hinted at by some contradictions. In one chapter he can't attend banquets because crowds bother him, but a few pages later he says "My panic disorder has no effect on my ability to function in the business world" (p. 149). If these are both true, some discussion would help.
Many panic sufferers would like to wave this book around as evidence that panic does not equate with general wimpiness. It's just disappointing that more substance isn't given here.
