4 out of 5 stars Series is fun.......2007-06-08

Series of books is great for the purse for when you get stuck in a waiting room, etc.

Enjoyable read and I will purchase more of her books. Right now I am hooked on PD James. It is not fair to compare.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this one - you can do better!.......2006-05-27

Wow, this book is just BAD BAD BAD.

Not only does the author obviously know NOTHING about ferrets (very poor attempt at research, she had many facts just plain wrong), but the writing in this book is also pretty darn poor. I have read many other teen books (I can only hope this was intended for young teens, not adult fiction!) and this one is definitely more poorly written than average. I could only read the first 17 pages before I just couldn't take anymore - I had to skim the rest. The characters are silly, vacant and poorly written - I found myself rolling my eyes and groaning more times than I could count! The fact that this book has an average rating of four stars is even worse - if THIS book has a four-star average, what good is the rating of books in general!?

Overall, I got the impression this book was written over a weekend - and that includes research time. Not worth the effort - if you like animals and want to read young teen animal books, skip this one and try Bunnicula or The Black Stallion instead.

2 out of 5 stars Needs ferret research, has stereotypical characters and predictable plot.......2006-04-14

First-research. If you are writing a series about animals, and you are using a species you haven't first hand knowledge of, is it OK to fudge facts assuming your readers won't know or care anyway?

Regarding any research-is it OK to fudge say, facts about the Middle Ages, or how to fire a particular gun, or make up some poison to create a murder method?

My opinion is, if you have a particular subject you are writing about, get the most accurate info about the subject you can, check and recheck your facts, because the reader is trusting the writer's knowledge and takes this info away from the book believing what was described about the subject is truth.

This is particularly important if the entire series is bulit around the premise of a pet sitter.Of course, not many writers are familiar with the ferret species, especially if not ferret owners. But if one is writing an entire plot revolving around ferrets, doesn't it behoove the writer to learn all salient facts?

I started reading this mystery of a pet sitter detective, Ms. Ballantyne and the facts regarding ferret behavior started off dead wrong, and continued along those lines throughout the book.

Granted, the detective lives in CA, ferrets are illegal, and she had to use the Internet to get info about them. Having done that, the detective still thinks it may be possible that ferrets ate a corpse. Not to the bone, mind you, but bites about the entire body. And she wasn't thoroughly convinced they didn't kill the victim to begin with.

Now, my question is, if the detective used the Internet, didn't the author writing the novel also use the Internet for info? And if so, didn't she read enough to understand that ferrets do not "make noise" when frightened-and wouldn't have been frightened by a car crashing through a wall to begin with? More likely, they would want out of the cage to explore the bucket seats. I won't even get into the likelihood of vampire ferrets.

And why does she confuse a domesticated ferret with Black Footed ones (*not* domesticated and not even related to the domesticated ferret) that are a hair's breath from extinction, and *not* roaming around North Dakota--and I'm referring to both species here.

So, research is very poor for this book, something non ferret fanciers may be able to overlook.

Stereotypical characters. The author kept making pointed remarks about a couple of characters' weight-to the point that the unpleasantness of one character's personality was almost defined by her being fat. Someone needs to inform this author that stereotyping people like that in fiction went out with Simon Legree and Little Nell on the railroad tracks.
Other characters, such as the pain in the behind cop, the oh-so-sexy private eye (or law enforcer) love interest, the male best friend pet spa owner, are standard in practically every amateur detective novel. No originallity here.

There are quicker, better ways of summorizing the first book's high points than the redundant recounting of them throughout the first couple of chapters. I felt as though I already read the book after the multiple references.

The plot isn't original or interesting-other than the idea of Bela Legosi ferrets.

I usually don't critize crime fiction I don't like. It is a matter of taste in many instances. But the severe lack of facts, plus irritating characters and plot, compelled me to take a stand for once.

5 out of 5 stars Pet Sitting and Murder.......2006-03-15

Kendra Ballantyne is continuing her pet sitting business while studying to take the ethics exam in hopes of reinstating her law degree.

A neighbor's Hummer crashes into her house. She discovers her tenants living in her former home are keeping illegal ferrets.

Soon after she discovers a corpse in her tenants' den. The ferrets are the prime suspects. The corpse turned out to be Chad Chatsworth and Charlotte LaVerne, her tenant, and her boytoy Yul become suspects. Charlotte asks Kendra to help prove they didn't do it. Kendra had recently helped prove her own innocence. With the help of her boyfriend Jeff Hubbard, a P.I. and security specialist, Kendra sets out to look into Chad's background. She finds he had many enemies. Can she discover who killed him and why he was killed in her home and the ferrets were implicated without putting herself or others in danger?

I really enjoy this series. Kendra is such a fun character. Her pet sitting adds so much to the enjoyment of this series. Plus her relationship with Jeff and police detective Ned Noralles make for a fun read.

This cozy is a fun, easy read. I always find myself coming to the end of the book before I realize it since I just want to keep reading!

I highly recommend this book and the whole series. Can't wait to read Fine-Feathered Death, the next in the series.

The year is 200X and everyone is now connected to the Cyber Network. People carry their own PET (Personal terminal) and are paired up with an artificial intelligence program called a NetNavi (or NetNavigator). Computers have turned the world into a bright and shiny utopia, but there's always trouble in paradise. A sinister organization by the name of World Three has appeared, and they've vowed to destroy this technological wonderland. Enter our young hero, Lan Hikari, an intensely curious and cheerful fifth grader. Synchronized with his NetNavigator, MegaMansupercharged, he becomes a super-charged dynamo. In and out of the Net, Lan and MegaMan do their best to thwart World Three's neverending quest to take over the world!

5 out of 5 stars Manohman! So, so much fun!.......2007-09-26

In the year 200X, the whole world is connected to the Cyber Network. People jack in to the Net using handheld PCs called PETs, and each person has their own artificially intelligent avatar called a NetNavi.

Lan Hikari's is MegaMan, a truly sophisticated and powerful NetNavi programmed by his father.

Like any fifth grader in DenTech City, Lan passes the time by having NetBattles with his fellow classmates, pitting MegaMan up against any who would challenge him. The problem is, NetBattling is illegal unless you have a special license. But that's only part of the Lan's and MegaMan's problem. An evil organization called World Three is infecting computers with sinister viruses with the hope of one day taking over the world.

Lan jacks in and sends MegaMan to stop these viruses before it's too late.

This manga, which is similar to the anime of the same name, was a blast to read. Ryo Takamisaki's storytelling is topnotch--quick, exciting and a whirlwind of adventure from beginning to end. His art is your classic manga but with a cartoon flare, and the dialogue is perfect, conveying to us everything we need to know about the story, without it coming off as long-winded explanations for "what's happening."

The banter between Lan and MegaMan is pricelss, even better than in the anime.

This volume also contains a very intriguing cliffhanger ending and fun bonus story.

        Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Megaman is cool!!!.......2006-02-27

This book is really cool and fun! All the action and how he has to face his darloid copy is exciting. It really shows you all the details and is very dramatic for ex. when he has to perform the double soul with protoman. This is one of the best comic books i've ever read! All the Manga and the characters are reeeeeeally cool!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for all who like megaman!!.......2005-10-17

Except for the character names, this book is pretty darn close to the games. It is funny fast paced and Mega-cool. In Vol. 8 there are 2 Mega-men: the real one and a darksoul copy. That is awesome but confusing if you haven't read vol. 7. The action scenes are nicely done and you can atually read the sound effects which are realistic. I like how bubbleman attacks megaman thinking he is the darksoul version. The first nt warrior manga/anime I bought was #3 and i understood it fully even though i had never before heard of the battle network series. Really good comic

        5 out of 5 stars I LUV ROCKMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-21

ok, since they didnt change much of rockman(FINALLY) i REALLY liked this series. iv read all of the books in the "series". u can get these at borders and other book stores. they didnt take out much(as far as i can tell)and i highly recommend this. BUT TAKE NOTE: there is a LITTLE blood, so if u hav a little brother/sister, and even though the blood is black, DON'T SHOW THIS TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the first book is ok tho...otherwise...im not so sure. X(. finally, i dont suggest skipping books....not fun. but this thing is HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehheh....enzan(chaud) as a chicken...i wonder how yaito(yai) thought of that...and i didnt know a portal could be a bed*snicker*...anyways...if u like this, then the regular rockman exe is for u...i highly suggest...

        5 out of 5 stars MegaManga!.......2005-06-23

The manga version of MegaMan NT Warrior is really good. It follows the games more than the anime, but all the characters have their names from the TV show.
I rather liked this (I never could get used to Maylu being called "Mayl").
So far I've read volumes 1 through 6. I liked all the volumes for different respects: volume 1 because it introduces you to the series, volume 2 because it introduces Chaud Blaze (my favorite character), volume 3 because it's really funny in some places (especially in these scenes between MegaMan and PharaohMan and MegaMan and GateMan) and really gets the series moving, volume 4 (this one is probably my favorite) because it introduces a kid named Sean Obihiro from the games (however, he is going around under the alias "Kei Yuki"), and he frequently annoys Chaud, who keeps giving him head noogies, plus there's this one really funny part where they make fun of Chaud's haircut (you have to actually see it), volume 5 because it introduces Mr. Famous (another one of my favorite characters), and Volume 6 because there's this one part where Chaud AND ProtoMan both start giving Sean noogies.
Yes, people have griped about the manga, although not as much as they've griped about the anime. But that doesn't change the fact that it's really good. It's also fairly inexpensive, compared to various other manga, but it's worth every cent.
However, I'm not sure that I'd recommend it for especially young children, because it's kind of violent at times and they're also allowed to use mild swear words occasionally (but only the mildest of swear words, nothing terrible).

Like I said, this manga is really good, and the drawings are also nicely done (although at times, usually during the battle sequences, it's kind of hard to tell what's going on), so if you like manga and if you like MegaMan, go ahead and buy it. You won't be disappointed, in all likelihood.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUR EXPECTING.......2007-09-21

It was purchased for my daughter-in-law. They are expecting their first child. She loves the book. It is and will be very helpful thru the next 7 months. She loves looking at the size of the baby as it grows. I would recomend it for any new to be Mom. It's a great gift for anyone you know who is expecting.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable during pregnancy!.......2007-09-21

I purchased this organizer for my first pregnancy and knew right away with my second pregnancy that I would buy it again! It is so helpful to have all my information in one place. It allows you to write in insurance information, doctor's contact information, results from tests, pregnancy wellness exams and much, much more. It really is invaluable! I loved looking back at my first pregnancy organizer and reminding myself of everything that occurred. There are other pregnancy organizers on the market, but I think this one is the most detailed.

4 out of 5 stars Very handy! .......2007-08-21

I was mid pregnancy when they came out with the revised version of the organizer. I like the new version much better. It was very helpful for all of my questions I had as a first time mom. I highly recommend this book for any one who likes to keep things organized and want one place to keep track of all of their pregnancy needs. I will defiantly buy one again for my next pregnancy.

4 out of 5 stars Could be better, but I still love mine.......2007-07-18

I have 4 kids and one of these for each of them. They made keeping track of what questions I had for the doc, weight changes, allowed meds, etc a lot easier. I don't think (as a first time mom) that I would've known just what to write down. As I've gone along with other pregnancies, I've learned to be more detailed in my writing and now go back to past journals as reference materials. Just when did heartburn kick in? When did I get to the point when I had trouble sleeping or rolling over?

The cons, as other reviewers have noted, mainly have to do with the layout. It's just not as easily accessible as it could be. I dealt with this by getting reusable sticky page markers and wrote the most important sections down: OB Appointments, Journal area, etc. Another beef I had was that there weren't quite enough slots for the appointments for me. There were periods when I had more frequent visits than usual and I ended up having to write on the reverse side of the previous page. If you have a difficult pregnancy, this may be an issue. Also, they only give you a small square for each week of journaling. I had way more to write than I had space and ended up writing very tiny to squeeze it all in.

Keep a pencil with it with a book/magazine to read in a small tote bag to grab on your way to the OB's. Just don't keep it where small children can get to it...

5 out of 5 stars Good record keeper.......2007-07-07

I used this journal for my first my pregnancy and am using the revised version now. Being high risk, it is great to be able to refer to my first journal weekly to see if I'd experienced the same symptoms the first time around. It's handy to take to dr visits to help remember questions I wanted to ask.The section tabs and the pocket are great additions. I wish there was a tab for each & every section, rather than just 3 general sections-had to add my own. This book is ideal for record keeping and remembering all those little things about the time you spent carrying your baby. I highly recommend it.

        Book Description

Located in the northwest region of Italy, Piedmont is recognized by Italians for having the richest of the regional cuisines, reaching its pinnacle in the fall, when the white truffles and porcini mushrooms indigenous to the area appear on the table. It is also home to the rice producing Po Valley, the motherland of risotto. Matt Kramer shares his passion for Piedmont in over 150 recipes featuring the specialties of the region-from antipasti such as Vitello Tonnato to easy, classic pasta dishes such as tajarin, Piedmonts interpretation of tagliatelle, from main courses such as Chicken Braised with Sweet Red Peppers to authentic desserts like Oven-Warmed Peaches Stuffed with Crushed Amaretti Cookies and Cocoa. An entire chapter is devoted to the world class wines of Piedmont, which include the noble Barolo and Barbaresco. With descriptive prose and beautiful color photography, just as The Splendid Table did for Emilia Romagna, A Passion for Piedmont will share the regions culinary treasures.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Piedmont.......2006-02-09

As reviewers hav already pointed out, this is a good book. It has useful information on what makes the food of the Piedmont region of Italy unique and is easy to follow. It has emphsized many of the key ingredients of the region such as anchovies, truffles, polenta, porcini mushrooms and a few well known dishes, such as bagna caoda sauce but has also omitted a few staple recipes such as Brasato al Barolo.

As reviewer David has pointed out there is generous information on truffles but unfortunately no local recipes that call for them. Having said that, truffles are in a sense like parmesan cheese; you can shave a bit over many dishes regardless if the recipe calls for them or not but I do think that some actual recipe ideas would have been helpful.

Reviewer Emily is also correct in pointing out that there are inconsistencies in many of the recipes and it is fair to say that a poor editing job was done here. I higly recommend that you completely read all recipes and make sure that they make sense before attempting to make any of the dishes. In further support of reviewer Emily's comments, she is absolutely accurate in her observation of the potatoe Gnocchi flour to potato analogy.

For me the book has been useful in helping me to come up with some ideas for a Piedmont influenced dinner table in lieu of the winter Olympics and also to gain some in depth knowledge on key Piedmontese ingredients, but to the amatuer chef, a word of caution.

Also as another reviewer has pointed out that given the books' title, more information on the region and it's people along with photography would have been useful.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Lives Up to Its Name.......2003-12-09

"A Passion for Piedmont" is aptly named and Matt Kramer indeed displays a thorough understanding of the region and of the Piedmontese. His book conveys a wealth of accurate information, wonderful descriptions of all things Piedmontese, and a genuine appreciation for all this region has to offer. No doubt he recognizes good food when he tastes it. But the editing of the recipes (and I hope the fault is in the editing) left me disappointed. As a teacher of Piedmontese cooking, married for 32 years to a Piedmontese husband, and a frequent visitor to my husband's hometown in Italy, I was thrilled to find a book I thought I could wholeheartedly recommend. Because I am so familiar with the dishes, it was not the recipes I needed. Most are now second nature to me and I cook by taste, feel, eye... the way the Piedmontese themselves do. I would also venture to guess that Matt Kramer cooks these dishes the same way, and probably with good results. But how does one explain a recipe for a 3-ounce serving of tajarin starting with over a cup of flour, (which he calculates to be 3-1/2 ounces) plus one large egg and 2 egg yolks? It just doesn't add up. And the recipe for capon with honey-hazelnut sauce calls for 1/2 pound shelled hazelnuts, 1 cup of honey, and 2 tablespoons dry mustard mixed with 2 tablespoons chicken stock... according to the author this is what it takes to prepare 1 cup of sauce. I cannot figure out how such inconsistencies could escape an editor's notice and I am left wondering if the other recipes work well enough to rely on. To be fair, many other readers seem to have enjoyed the recipes they've tried and most read as if they'll work out fine, although I have seen better recipes for gnocchi di patate (too much flour in proportion to the potatoes... they are bound to be heavy, though perhaps easier to work with). I would recommend though that the recipes be tested and that necessary revisions and corrections be made in future editions.

5 out of 5 stars The only cookbook I use.......2003-12-03

This is the only cookbook I use. After a trip to Turin, having had possibly the best meal of my life there, I had the great good luck to find this book. I've tried about 1/4 of the recipes now and all have been easy to follow and deliver great results. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars I have a Passion for Piedmont now as well.......2000-06-08

In my library of regional cookbooks this one ranks at or near the top. It combines recipes with information about the food, the people, the geography, etc. to give you a "feel" for the region. The only thing that could have made it better would have been some full-color photos of Piedmont.

The recipes are excellent. I have tried many of them with great success. My table guests have been very pleased with the results. The book does give a generous treatment to white truffles (I'm sure I will buy one some day), but there is a wealth of other Piedmontese treasure unearthed in this book. There is a wonderful variety in the recipes for antipasti, pasta, risotti, meat, and poultry. Also, I will certainly be braver in my selection of Italian, especially Piedmontese, wines because of this book. I have had several parties where the menu was just the antipasti from this book, and my guests loved the results.

Great recipes which are easy to follow and use easy-to-find ingredients (with a few truffly exceptions). A great glimpse of a great culture and a great cuisine.

Matt Kramer has a Passion for Piedmont. I have a Passion for Piedmont too, because of his book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Piedmont Lore.......1999-11-25

This author began his career as a wine writer. He not only has many recipes which we have used repeatedly, but also tells wonderful stories about the food of the Piedmont. Best of all, he has introduced us to the wonders of white truffle oil. Plus, he gives great tips on wine.

5 out of 5 stars Why can't human babies come with one of these??.......2006-09-14

Kittens for Dummies is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. I'm glad I didn't get a copy from the library because the overdue fines would have bankrupted me!!!

Growing up, my mom was a breeder and I've had cats ever since. About 1.5 yrs ago,my son decided that he wanted a dog or cat that would be 'his' and sleep upstairs with him. We were at Petsmart and there was an adoption event. He saw a 7 mos old black kiten named Scamp. He wanted to take him home immediately, but had to talk to Daddy, who at 43 and never having an indoor pet had graciously allowed the adoption of a cat and a rather large dog. He agreed and during the week that we waited to adopt Scamp, I went looking for a book that would explain to my son all about kittens and what kinds of things they needed. I found very few children's books that covered the kinds of info I wanted. On the shelf next to it was Kittens For Dummies. It had all kinds of information in it, and happened to have a sticker on the front that said "Autographed Copy". I thought that was neat and that it had been so long since I'd had kittens that it wouldn't hurt for me to brush up on my own kitten care knowledge. I read the book cover to cover, like a novel. I couldn't put it down. For the interesting, pertinent and especially funny parts, I read it aloud to my husband and son while we drove from place to place that week. I suspect they had most of the book read to them. When I got to the part about orphan kittens, I was very interested. I had only one child, and we could not have any more. The thought came that maybe I could use some of the 'baby crazies' to take care of baby cats that didn't have mothers and more. I talked to my husband and to the people at the rescue group when we picked up Scamp, and while they said they didn't get a lot of bottle babies, they didn't have many people that could care for them and they would definitely call me. They called a week later. I got a box with a couple of towels, a bottle, a brush, an can of formula and I was a new mom! THANK GOD for Dusty's book. That kitten had a number of problems, but I was prepared for almost every single one, thanks to the book. I learned the signs to watch for when he would get sick, times he needed medicine or special care, how to determine what age he was, and what milestones he would or should have reached. Since then, I've been a foster mom to many more kittens. I catapulted from 'newbie foster parent' to 'expert kitten foster'. When the group had a kitten that a lot of supervision or that was very medically fragile they brought them to me. I had a lot of help from the more experienced rescuers in our group and from friends online, but more often than not, they reminded me of something I'd read in Kittens for Dummies. I had the privilege of meeting Dusty and Weems, and found out something really neat about the book -- All of the pictures except the show kitties and the one on the cover are ALL orphan kittens raised in their home. That's a LOT of happy and healthy kittens!! The book has something for everyone that has or will have a kitten or cat in their life. A lot of the information I've used for full-grown cats as well as kittens - because the information is so thoroughly presented. I have places that the book will fall open to on it's own because it's been in that place so many times -- I use the age chart often to try to figure out what age a kitten that has been brought to me might be. A normal, healthy, indoor kitten can be estimated by weight, but in rescue, very rarely are the kittens we get normal, healthy indoor kittens until we help them become that. Rescue can be hard work - especially when you lose one of the kittens. Dusty even covers that possibility in her book. That's not something we all want to think about, but it's an important thing to consider, since everyone experiences the death of a pet differerntly. Having lost my own cat of 10 years recently, I ever found myself popping my book open, once again, to check out the web address for petloss.com. I hope if you have or are going to get a kitten (or a cat) that you will get this book. I don't know what I would have done without it!

5 out of 5 stars A fast and easy read.......2006-08-21

One thing I like about the "for Dummies" format is their layout which makes information easy to find and quick to digest. In "Kittens for Dummies," the author, whose name I recognized from numerous cat articles in magazines like "Cat Fancy", writes from twenty years of experience in rescuing orphaned kittens. She gives a fair, two-sided argument (pros and cons both) about buying pedigreed kittens and dealing with reputable breeders. In particular, the sections on behavior problems and health issues were useful and up to date. Like other "for Dummies" books, the author filtered in plenty of humor. As a teacher, I've always found that humor helps make information easier to learn and remember. While the book doesn't contain information regarding obscure illnesses--by being obscure the disease isn't a likely event. That's what veterinarians are for besides. Overal, I found the book to be a useful, enjoyable, and easy to read guide. A definite must for first time kitten owners.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource.......2006-08-14

Being involved in rescue, I find this book to be an invaluable resource. Sometimes I use it like an encyclopedia and look up information that I don't know or might have forgotten. I've also referred countless people to this book when they've adopted a kitten. Kittens are cute and people are drawn to them but most find that they're not as easy to care for as they'd thought. "For Dummies"? Maybe. But also for people who are smart enough to know they need help. If kittens came with an owner's manual, this book would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Rescuers and Kitten Owners!.......2006-08-13

As both a rescuer and a breeder, I have found this book to be an easy-to-read and indispensable guide for fosterers and owners of kittens - so much so that I have started giving a copy of this book to all of my kitten buyers when they come to pick up their new baby! I have gotten much positive feedback from my kitten buyers, who have said that the book has been especially helpful to them in introducing their kitten to its new home, and in understanding the needs of their new family member. But this book is especially valuable to fosterers who have to take the place of a four-footed mom in raising at-risk orphans, and I am certain that this book's information on raising orphaned kittens has helped to save many a newborn life.

Super reference book on the subject! I have been collecting for years and I still learned something from Chris' Book. Highly recommended reference for the historian or collector! As there is no other available except military publications, I cannot compare it to others. However, unlike the military Technical Manuals, this book covers every mask in one book with real photos as opposed to many books with drawings! Recommended!!

This book is a MUST HAVE for any militaria enthusiast. The book contains a beautiful photo section and an accurate history on chemical warfare and US gas masks in particular. Carey's extensive research brings us a long overdue source for information on the subject at a very affordable price.

              Book Description

Among the numerous deities invested with special spheres of responsibility in ancient Egypt Mr.t is charged with the salutation of the deity (king or god) and the provision of cult-music. Since there is no lack of source material relating to the goddess from all periods right down to Roman times, Mr.t readily provides an exemplary demonstration of a minor deity's transformation through time. Her original deification must have taken place during the 4th and 5th dynasties when the chorus designated Mr.t came to be personified as the ritual figure "Mr.t upon the house of Gold" at the Hebsed and the first "Priests-of-Mr. t"-titles appeared. To the characteristic iconography, tress of hair and special gesture taken over from the chorus by the deity more symbols came to be added: the mysterious House of Gold, the place where statues were fashioned; the heraldic plants of Upper and Lower Egypt; and, in Ptolemaic times, the harp.

"Beetle Bailey" without Sarge is like computers without the Internet or TV without cable. A vital element is missing.

4 out of 5 stars So, you wanna know a real African-American movie hero?.......2002-02-18

When one considers the trailblazing African-American actors of the past, names like Poitier, Dandridge, McDaniel, Robeson, to name a few, come to mind. However, Woody Strode, an actor possessing one of the greatest physiques in sports/cinematic history, is deserving of a tribute.

This autobiography, co-authored by Sam Young, details the varied career of the athlete/actor, from his excursions in football, track, professional wrestling, and his latter work in movies. Filled with interesting anecdotes of working with legends like John Ford, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, and Cecil B. DeMille, the book is a delight for film buffs. Also, the football stories are an essential history lesson on what it was like to be black playing for universities like USC or UCLA, as well as life in the NFL.

Strode, with his mixture of various ethnicities, and his quiet yet strong nature would be the perfect candidate for a filmed biopic. This made him perfect for such varied fare as the epics "The Ten Commandments" and "Spartacus," adventures like "The Last Voyage," and westerns "Sergeant Rutledge," "Two Rode Together" and "Once Upon a Time in the West."

Hollywood should consider a film heralding one of its own, a true giant, in both the literal and figurative sense.
