Book Description
Newly appointed Detective Inspector Gemma James has never thought to question her friend Hazel Cavendish about her past. So it is quite a shock when Gemma learns that their holiday retreat to a hotel in the Scottish Highlands is, in fact, Hazel's homecoming -- and that fellow guest Donald Brodie was once Hazel's lover, despite a vicious, long-standing feud between their rival, fine whiskey distilling families. And the fires of a fierce and passionate affair may not have burned out completely -- on Brodie's part at least, since he's prepared to destroy Hazel's marriage to win back his "Juliet." But when a sudden, brutal murder unleashes a slew of sinister secrets and long-seething hatreds, putting Hazel's life in peril, Gemma knows she will need help unraveling this very bloody knot -- and calls for the one man she trusts more than any other, Duncan Kincaid, to join her far from home ... and in harm's way.

Appropriate title........2007-07-26
This is the ninth installment in the Gemma James/Duncan Kincaid Scotland Yard series with our heroes on the outside of a murder investigation involving Gemma's good friend and ex-landlord as a prime suspect. This book has the template of this series' earlier entries - the weaving of plots past and present, a cast of characters tied together in a murder investigation and Gemma and Duncan balancing police work with their personal relationship and children. What is blatantly absent is a gripping story line. There are love triangles aplenty, more than enough information for this reader on the distillery industry and plenty of conversations about food but the murder mystery never gains any traction. If you are new to this series, start at the beginning for this addition contains none of the subtlety, complexity and depth of those very good books.
A Vacation in Scotland is Anything But.......2007-06-11
Gemma James, grieving for a lost child accepts an invitation to join a friend in Scotland for a vacation. Gemma has achieved a new appointment away from her partner and lover, Duncan Kincaid. She enjoys the responsibility of her new position but misses the easy companionship of working with Duncan.
Deborah Crombie has the style, talent and creativity to sustain a police procedural interwoven with complex personal issues and romance. When her friend is arrested for the murder of the man she left behind, Gemma asks Duncan to join her but this is her day in the light as she delves into a past shaded by feudal barons of the distilling industry, lost love and ancient hatreds. Slowly Gemma knits the fabric of the past into a myriad of conflicting truths. While investigating the recent past, Gemma unearths secrets long buried.
A step about the traditional county house English mystery; "Now You May Weep," is a fine addition to this outstanding series.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks & Pitfalls for Authors 2007."
A really good (mystery) story ..........2005-10-08
Deborah Crombie really hits her stride in her Kincaid/James series. Scotland comes alive in all its beauty as she weaves old loves, new loves and murder together.
Some of the people involved in the story belong to families who have been distilling whiskey for generations. The facts about the craft of making fine whiskey are fascinating. There are flashbacks to an earlier time and the roots of a sad feud that will surprisingly intrude on the present.
Gemma James, accepts an invitation from an old friend to join her for a visit to a B&B in Scotland for a few days. They are to have gourmet meals with cooking classes included. Her friend, Hazel, a psychologist, does not tell Gemma that she needs some time away from her marriage. She also doesn't tell her that the visit to Scotland, her former home, will include seeing an old friend, a man she was once engaged to marry.
The people assembled for the weekend are a mixed and interesting group but Gemma soon starts to puzzle over the undercurrents between some guests. She is especially surprised by the robust kilt-wearing Scot who appears to have eyes for only one person, Hazel. Gemma suspects, but refuses to believe, that Hazel could be interested in anyone other than her husband.
Duncan Kincaid, remains in London with two childen, Gemma's 4-year Toby and Duncan's own newly acquired son, Kit. Duncan's wife left him years before and never told him she was pregnant with their child. The truth only comes out after her death and Duncan brings the boy to London to live him and Gemma. Duncan has now received a letter from Kit's maternal grandmother who has filed a lawsuit demanding custody of the child. Kit, still in quiet turmoil over his Mother's death and the absence of the man he always thought was his father, is afraid to count on Duncan, or anyone. The news of his grandmother's lawsuit only adds to his insecurities.
Both Gemma and Duncan wish they were not so far apart this weekend. Each one would like to discuss the troubles and puzzles that are suddenly presenting themselves in London and Scotland. Duncan doesn't want to tell Gemma what has happened as it would spoil her weekend. Gemma would like Duncan nearby so she can discuss her mounting worrries about Hazel. Then Gemma's weekend is really spoiled when a guest at the B&B is shot to death.
Did I mention that Gemma and Duncan are police officers?
Eventually, Duncan joins Gemma in Scotland where they meet a police inspector who is decidedly not impressed with their credentials or their ideas about what has happened.
You can read this book without any concern that you are starting in the middle of the series. It stands on its own, well written and very interesting. You are in the fabled highlands of Scotland where love and revenge are carried through the generations and leave their mark on the present.
The reading excels, anyway.......2005-06-02
I heard the excellent reading by Michael Deehy on Sound Library. The novel is a well-done mystery, if not quite a detective story because essentially it's a soap opera. I can't remember the number of times a female gasps in quivering terror, "has something happened to him?"
A wee dram...but potent!.......2005-05-02
Deborah Crombie puts too much emphasis on the supernatural to be one of my all-time favorites but I love her passion for her stories and her passion for the parts of the British Isles where she chooses to set her stories. This one takes our friends Gemma James and Duncan Kincaid to the Scottish birthplace of their friend Hazel. While on a "cooking weekend" at a B&B (sounds like such fun!), Gemma and Hazel get involved in a murder and Kincaid comes to the rescue. The murder is fairly ordinary and somewhat predictable, but the back story behind it is fascinating and you get to learn a lot about the ancient art of making scotch and the tiny distilleries that dot the Scottish landscape and provide the world-class imbibement. I found that part to be genuinely fascinating, as I did the descriptions of the scenery. It sounds like a lovely place for a murder. And there is a heart-wrenching backstory about Kinkaid's son Toby and his search for identity. Crombie is a very good writer.

Book Description
Spider-Man versus his most implacable enemy! Norman Osborn is a respected businessman, the owner of several companies, including the New York Daily Bugle. He is also secretly the super-villain known as the Green Goblin--a foe who has turned Spider-Man's life upside down more than once, and one who knows that Spider-Man is really Peter Parker! Osborn's latest scheme is his most ambitious yet: to make himself mayor of New York. But where many see that as a laudable goal, Spider-Man knows that Osborn's goal is nothing less than absolute power. Spider-Man can defeat the Green Goblin, but Osborn refuses to act himself, preferring to remain above the fray and let the mercenaries known as the Rat Pack do his dirty work. The wall-crawler must find a way to stop Osborn's machinations before it's too late!

A tangled web of intrigue and lies..........2003-12-23
Spider-Man has always been my most favorite comic-book super hero (in the Marvel universe). This book has confirmed for me just why he's my favorite. This time, the web-slinger is against an implacable foe who can't be so easily disposed of because he's successfully convinced nearly everyone that he never was the Green Goblin. Worse, he strikes at Spider-Man and his alter ego with impunity, given that if Spidey tries to do anything about him, then he'll be seen as a criminal and Norman Osborn will get away clean. The dilemma he presents Peter with is diabolically clever: Either take the opportunity for financial security and leave behind his responsibilities, or continue being Spider-Man and possibly jeopardize his current position at the Daily Bugle. I was really rooting for Spidey to take down Osborn after he secretly poisoned Mary Jane. All in all, this is a very satisfying novel.
Well Written Story.......2003-06-24
I really enjoyed this book. The story wasn't earth-shattering, but what really made the book for me was the writing. Busiek and Archer made the characters very real and interesting. For the first time I felt that I really had a sense of what it would be like to swing through New York on web lines or see the world through Spidey's mask.
True to Spider-Man's legacy this book wasn't about the hero as much as it was about Peter Parker. Also, I thought it brilliant that the villian in the book was Norman Osborn and not really his alter-ego, the Green Goblin.
I enjoyed the detective-type efforts that Peter went through to figure out the case. The books seemed as much of a mystery as it was an action story. I'm glad that I read it and would definitely recommend it.
Parker vs. Osborn in a battle of wit.......2001-07-18
I, like a lot of Spidey fans, think Peter Parker is a pretty smart guy. But, up until the very end, Parker is made out to be a no-brain super-hero who can't stand up to the intellect of his opponents. But hey, Norman Osborn ain't no fool, and he is depicted in the book as one of Spidey's greatest foes. And in this, I think Busiek is right on the button. But still, I think Peter is depicted all wrong for most of this book, but I guess he comes out alright in the end.
Goblin Moon.......2001-05-28
The book was very good. But if you knew anything about Spidey than you would know Norm's behind the Rat Pack...
Ok, but plot drowns it.......2001-02-09
Something as played out as the Spider-man/Goblin wars has always been a plotline for novels, and this one is no exception. The problem is that sometimes they get stupid. How could the Green Goblin get unmasked as Norman Osborn, "come back from the dead," and all he does to get away with it is lie? Oh, come on, how stupid are the people in these books? Note: the last two sentences don't tell anything about the book, just the history before it. Now as for the book itself, it does okay with the plotline. The story begins as a group of terrorists called the Rat Pack spring a reign of terror, not even Spider-Man can stop it. Meanwhile Norman Osborn is running for mayor and his Green Goblin persona seems to have resurfaced, leaving Spider-Man on edge. But that's only the begining of this attempt at a thriller. I say this because one big problem is the plot is way too predictable. You know what's going to happen before it does. Plus, another problem is that it's not very thrilling; Spidey stays on edge the hole book and doesn't actually fight the Goblin until near the end. They also add extra little parts here and there, which have nothing to do with the overall story. Yes, despite all I said, I still give it 3 stars, but only because the writing quality is pretty good and I like Spider-Man novels. Otherwise, the plot just isn't that good.

Nourishing Traditions:The cookbook that challenges politically correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrates.......2007-10-07
I love this book! I have one and also have bought it for two of my relatives. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know how they really should eat to be healthy.
Challenging, transformative, hope to God she's right!.......2007-09-19
A friend recommened this to me when I was "ready to make changes" in our diet. Boy! Was that a correct phrasing! Changes are definitely required to accomplish what Ms. Fallon describes. I hope that she is correct in her research and logic and I have done what I can to verify it....hard going, to say the least. It's easy to fall off the proverbial band wagon, but we do keep trying to manage our food this way and it does taste good! Good luck!
Terrific resource!.......2007-09-05
I LOVE this book! I've had it for a few weeks and I've been trying many of the suggestions -- soaking grains overnight, switching to raw milk, etc. It seems like a lot of work at first, but once you incorporate her suggestions into your routine, you don't think anything of it anymore. For example, every night I now put my grains in a bowl to soak overnight, or I make yogurt or kefir. It only takes a few minutes and you keep a store of ingredients on hand for cooking. I am slowly implementing the suggestions, starting with the grains, dairy, and I've just started introducing organ meat into our meal plans, and eventually I'll incorporate the vegetable fermenting, etc.
The book is packed with wonderful recipes AND the science behind her arguments.
Great Book.......2007-09-04
This book is a great reference guide and has some great recipes. It was recommended to me and I am happy it was, now I will recommend it to others!
Outstanding.......2007-08-24
This book is both very insightful and very informative by providing the baseline for proper nourishment What a pity the majority will continue to ignore its message.

Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust.......2007-02-02
Molly O'Neill's New York Cookbook is a celebration of the New York Food world. She is the food columnist for The New York Times Magazine and spent five years working on this amazing book. The first recipe I tried was "Katie's Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust." The ingredients looked delicious with cinnamon and chocolate wafers for the crust and a rum and coffee flavored filling. I made it for Easter and everyone was very impressed.
Since the author is a food columnist I knew she would be selecting winning recipes and so I felt confident enough to make the recipe for a big occasion without even trying it out at least one time for myself. I was very pleased with the results and can recommend the recipe to you for any occasion.
Whether you are interested in trying lots of new recipes or you just enjoy reading cookbooks, the New York Cookbook has so much to offer. Page after page of delicious information mingle with the even more delicious recipes. Some of the fun recipes include:
New York Penicillin - a chicken soup made by Aunt Marie Stacey. This stock/soup is then used in a variety of recipes and is very easy to make.
Irish Soda Bread - Make two loaves of bread in no time at all.
Simple Fresh Tomato Sauce - The perfect sauce for pasta made with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, oregano and a little brown sugar.
Shrimp Fried Rice
Shish Kebabs
Meat Loaf
Rosemary Chicken
Chicken Paprikas
Pan-Fried Sole
Yoko's Japanese Salad Dressing
Marrakesh Carrots
Some of the sweet treats include: "Coney Island Fudge" made with cream and semisweet chocolate, "Zoe Morsette's Oatmeal Macaroons," "Aunt Olga's Cardamom Cake," and "Katharine Hepburn's Brownies." If you love ice cream, you may want to try out the recipe for Hot Fudge Sauce and Butterscotch Sauce.
A few of the highlights in this book include:
Food Walks - Wander through food markets
A Few Essential Ingredients in Italian Cooking

The New York Cookbook is an extremely well-researched feast that will satisfy the cerebral appetite as well as please your family and friends when you try out the delicious recipes. These recipes have been created by some of the best cooks in New York and you can use them with confidence, knowing you are making something wonderful for dinner or dessert. This cookbook was a wonderful gift from a friend who loves visiting New York and I already have plans to buy copies for friends and relatives. This is a highly collectible cookbook with recipes you will look forward to making year after year.

A Nifty New York Cookbook.......2006-11-10
As a native New Yorker, I consider this a classic ... wonderful anecdotes and recipes from a vast array of people who live in the city. Molly's affection for the city is evident (her brother, Paul, played for the Yankees), and her knowledge of both food and the city makes this cookbook a gem.
New York Cookbook: From Pelham Bay to Park Avenue, Firehouses to Four-Star Restaurants.......2005-08-02
Cooks Magazine recommended this cookbook as being very authentic. I bought it because of their review. They were absolutely right. The recipes are original/authentic New York complete with history and original photos. It's a great read even if you never make any of the recipes.
I highly recommend this book.
Good but some recipes are hit or miss.......2005-04-19
This book has the best spaghetti sauce recipe --my husband and I loved it--it was a way to bring NY cooking to Hawaii since there are not many good italian restaurants out here like in NY, which I miss. On the downside, not all recipes were good. For ex, I did not like the Madison Square burgers nor did I like the Pad Thai noodles (I tried recipes from Keo or Cooking light for Pad Thai which were better). I will try some more recipes from this book and hopefully will have better luck.
A great guide to NYC restaurants, and shopping.......2005-02-03
New York Cookbook is a witty, chatty book capturing the essense of New York City through it's unique food culture. There are over 400 delicious recipes from eateries famous, and not so well-known; plus mini-shopping guides to various New York neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge, Chinatown, Flushing, Greenpoint, Arthur Avenue, Hell's Kitchen, and Jackson Heights. Note, the book was published in 1992, and some of the shops mentioned in the book have either moved, or have gone out of business. nevertheles, this book is a great resource. rkchin. http://www.nychinatown.org

Comfort and information for grieving pet owners.......2007-09-29
This is a hard book to read, especially when you have lost a pet or know you are going to lose a beloved pet soon, but it is very useful. Everything about it is kind and understanding, from the abstract cover that does not feature a happy dog or cat to the chapters loaded with advice about all those tough topics we'd rather not think about, including saying goodbye, euthanasia, what to do with the pet's remains, deciding whether to get another pet, providing for pet care in case you die or become disabled, and what to do if you're forced to give your pet away. We don't want to think about these things, but sometimes we need to know. Allen, a writer and pet lover with a master's degree in counseling, has produced a reference every pet owner should keep around, just in case.
Loss of a Beloved Friend.......2007-07-30
I purchased this book a few weeks after the loss of my beloved black lab Java at 13 yrs of age. The pain I felt the morning I had to make the dreaded decision was visceral and made breathing difficult. It was beyond anything I had experienced and simply numbing. The book offered amazing insight into the grieving process and assured me the emotions were expected, natural and eventually the pain would lessen. It also addresses the guilt we feel and our questioning of "could I have done more" or "maybe I made a mistake" which are quite powerful.
This book is a must have guide for any pet owner. My prayers and thoughts are with all of us sharing the pain and loss of a beloved animal, both now and forever.

Coping With Sorrow on the Loss of Your Pet.......2006-09-23
My best friend died 1.5 years ago and I still miss her terribly - she was my 15 year old cat. This book was very useful to me during my time of intense mourning. While I know that her loss was a significant and horrible event in my life, recognition of the death of animal companions is not common in our society. This book helped me to see that I was not alone in my grief and that it was okay and normal to feel such grief. I actually purchased several books on this topic and found this one to be the best.
Some help & understanding through difficult loss.......2006-09-12
After my best friend of 12 1/2 years Skipper passed away in early 2005, I was a wreck and needed some grounding. This book offered empathy for the loss of my dog & helped me understand the feelings I had at the time. This book won't erase the pain, but it offers objectivity...God Bless all of man's best friends.

Coping With Sorrow On The Loss Of Your Pet (second edition) - Book Review
Author of seven books, Moira Allen is also an accomplished article writer and columnist. During her long career, she has held a variety of writing-related positions, including a past editor of Dog Fancy Magazine.
Her book, Coping With Sorrow On The Loss Of Your Pet, has been in production for 20 years and has been embraced by humane societies, veterinary schools and pet cemeteries. This support comes with good reason...
Coping With Sorrow On The Loss Of Your Pet is an exceptionally well planned and thoroughly researched, 182-page non-fiction self-help book. Moira displays excellent organizations skills and clearly shows a compassion and dedication to the concept of preparedness for the death of a loved one.
This 13-chapter book opens with some lovely poems that, frankly, meant so much more to me after I finished the book and returned to read them once more. The author covers every aspect of losing a pet and closes with a lovely write-up about her life as a writer.
While I have not yet experienced the death of a pet, I have had the experience of finding homes for three beloved cats in the past due to circumstances beyond my control, and I have lost two cats in a city I once lived in. Her chapter dealing with missing pets was absolutely dead on in regards to the emotional process, which Moira so accurately describes as a cross between a death and a divorce.
My husband and I have the pleasure of sharing our home with three friends. Our eldest is a female cat, who is showing her age; she has been with us for 13-years. Through this book, I learned what to expect during the aging and letting go stages - and I was also awakened to our lack of preparedness for our four-legged family members in the event of our death or prolonged injury/illness. This new knowledge arrived with perfect timing as we are currently updating our little Will.
Another aspect that we had not yet considered was what we planned to do for our four-legged friends when they pass on to the next plane. This was brought to the discussion table at once.
Moira also discusses aspects of dealing with the death on an emotional level. For instance, each member of the family, even those of the four-legged variety, will grieve differently according to the relationship they had with the deceased. The ways we all will be able to show our emotions will vary just as much and I think it is helpful for pet-owners to be aware of these differences in order to avoid misunderstandings. The author also shows us some social barriers, such as people who cannot comprehend the grief over the loss of an animal, and she shows us how to deal with this hurtful event.
This book was so helpful! The new discussions that were brought into our home over these important issues, made me so very grateful for having had the opportunity to read this book.

Josef Frank: Architect and Designer: An Alternative Vision of the Modern Home
ASIN: 0226492664 |
Book Description
Architect, designer, and theorist Josef Frank (1885-1967) was known throughout Europe in the 1920s as one of the continent's leading modernists. Yet despite his important contributions to the development of modernism, Frank has been largely excluded from histories of the movement. Josef Frank: Life and Work is the first study that comprehensively explores the life, ideas, and designs of this complex and controversial figure.
Educated in Vienna just after the turn of the century, Frank became the leader of the younger generation of architects in Austria after the First World War. But Frank fell from grace when he emerged as a forceful critic of the extremes of modern architecture and design during the early 1930s. Dismissing the demands for a unified modern style, Frank insisted that it was pluralism, not uniformity, that most characterized life in the new machine age. He called instead for a more humane modernism, one that responded to people's everyday needs and left room for sentimentality and historical influences. He was able to put these ideas into practice when, in 1933, he was forced to leave Vienna for Sweden. There his work came to define Swedish (or Scandinavian) modern design. For more than thirty years he was the chief designer for the Stockholm furnishings firm Svenskt Tenn, producing colorful, cozy, and eclectic designs that provided a refreshing alternative to the architectural mainstream of the day and presaged the coming revolt against modernism in the 1960s.
In this sensitive study of one of the twentieth century's seminal architects and thinkers, Christopher Long offers new insight into Josef Frank's work and ideas and provides an important contribution to the understanding of modernist culture and its history.

Book Description
Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington and his music have been an intregral part of the American scene for most of the 20th Century. Janna Tull Steed introduces the readers to the engaging, enigmatic man himself, as well as to the range of Ellington's musical achievement, with a lively mix of fact and anecdote.
Customer Reviews:
good introduction to Ellington.......2000-04-03
Very accesible book & good introduction not only to Duke Ellington but the world of Jazz. I suppose an author is limited by the number of pages how in depth one can get but still I expected a more critical examination of the contradiction of Ellington's public persona w/ his spirituality and how he reconciled these contradictions. That said, I still found Steed's argument convincing, especially his leading up to his sacred music. This is especially a good book for the new initiate to Duke Ellington.
Author Janna Steed breaks new ground.......2000-02-26
I just recently joined a book discussion group and last night, during my first meeting we were discussing Janna Tull Steed's new book "Duke Ellington: A Spiritual Biography." In just 192 pages Steed traces Ellington's development from a piano player to bandleader to composer and his truly thrilling and sublime sacred concerts in the last decade of his life. Steed also discusses in depth Ellington's ability to write for the individual voice, or band member, which seems to be, at least partly, what made and marks him as such an extraordinary and perhaps greatest American composer--that and his overwelming dedication to his music and a relentless ability to constantly break new ground.
Steed's grasp of Ellington and his music, particularly Ellington as a composer is tops. She draws on the enormous archives at the Smithsonian Institution but also on extensive firsthand interviews with scores of people who were intimately familiar with Duke Ellington and his music, and especially his development of his sacred music and concerts. It is in the area of the sacred concerts that Steed breaks new ground but also her focus of Ellinton as composer, as well as his oft forgotten important work in Hollywood. Her outstanding achievment is that she accomplished this in 192 pages. Steed covers the entire scope of Ellington's remarkable life and career and her insights are very welcome and as engaging as they are informative.
Great Book! Great Series!.......2000-02-26
I picked this book up after reading Joan of Arc in this Lives and Legacies Series. This new book delivers everything it promises. I'm a real biography nut with an interest in a very broad range of subjects (and that's just what this series delivers) but have little time to immerse myself in a 500 or 700 page reading. So it's great to be able to pick up these short biographies, get a great read, and then decide if I want to explore a subject in further depth. But I can tell you with both these books, short as they are (192 pages), they are still very in-depth, scholarly and but still accessible to the popular audience. Duke Ellington was a particular pleasure as I knew nothing about his Sacred music and Concerts, nor have I run across anything that examines so fully the films that him and his orchestra were featured in, and which by the way Ellington had a significant role in developing. Author Janna Steed offers up a terrific little gem with this new book on Duke Ellington.
engaging, informative, and, most importantly, accessible.......2000-02-26
The author's knowledge of Duke Ellington, and descriptions of his compositions is impressive. After studying Ellington's life and compositions through this book more closely, in his music, even when it is not overtly religious, one can quickly see that Ellington did indeed work out his spirituality through his music, as this author so convincingly argues. Of especial interest is the author's conception of spirituality and her deep artistry of both genuinely recognizing Ellington's and making that connection with his music, and how both shaped and influenced his life. This is not a scholarly tome, but rather a wonderfully quick, short read. As one of many old Ellington fans, my guess is that Duke Ellington would have smiled brightly and given his big stamp of approval to this book.
The Good Old Duke Is Hotter Than Ever!.......2000-02-24
I just got finished listening to the new CDs of Duke Ellington's Sacred Music, picked up at Borders. Wow! While I was listening to this great stuff I was reading this book. And Wow! again. If you want the nitty, gritty, the lowdown, or dope so to speak, on the Duke you'll have to go somewhere else. Miss Steed does give you the whole story but her emphasis is on his work, his artistry, and his legend--what the Good Man left us with--and his Sacred Music, which he said, was not his best work, but his most important work. And it was real, man, this is what I was looking for, someone who really had something new to say about The Man, and knew what they were talking about! Buy this book and get to know the Duke and the man behind the legend.
