Book Description
Read by Eric Roberts Dick Morrison's life has become a nightmare of addictions, filling his days with overeating, overworking, and smoking way too much. When an old friend tells him about a surefire way to quit, he's more than willing to give it a shot. But what Dick doesn?t know is that Quitters, Inc. demands a high price from anyone who strays from their rigid rules?like a few volts of electricity for the nearest and dearest...or maybe a missing thumb? Forced to choose between his desperate need for cigarettes and the dire consequences of giving in to his addiction, Dick must decide just how important another drag really is.

Quit smoking.... or else.......2007-07-05
Ever tried to quit smoking? Did you fall off the wagon or gain weight when you did? Well Stephen King has found an almost sure fired way to quit. All you have to do is go to Quitters, Inc. In this story, Dick is a heavy smoker. He comes across an old friend who was a smoker as well. As they are chatting, Dick finds out that his friend has quit smoking, lost weight and feels better than ever by going to this place called Quitters, Inc. After much contiplating, Dick finally decides to go. To his surprise though, he is in for more than he bargained for. He finds out that he has to quit smoking cold turkey and if he doesn't the consequences could be horrific. It's not like they are going to hurt him but they will torture his wife and then his son instead. Not only does he have to quit smoking but he has to keep his weight down and keep in good shape. Are they just bluffing? Can he make it or will his family endure the pain for his habit?
Good.......2007-05-26
A normal wierd Stephen King book. One I hadn't read and I don't think it is in a paperback. It was very good though kinda short.
LOVED IT.......2007-05-13
A GREAT LITTLE STORY. I SAT IN THE CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR 20 MINS TO HEAR THE ENDING, I DIDN'T WANT TO WAIT.
Part of 1983 movie.......2006-06-28
This story has stayed with me ever since I first was exposed to it at the movies in 1985. It is one of three short stories within 'Stephen King's Cat's Eye', with James Woods playing 'Dick' in the Quitters, Inc segment. As this particular story had such an effect on me, it was a challenge to not imagine James Woods while listening to Eric Roberts. Fortunately, Eric Roberts did a great job, and allowed me to be absorbed by this wonderfully twisted story again!
a sure-fire way to quit smoking.......2001-12-17
I'm not a smoker, but this story helped me understand what smokers really go through when they try to quit. Even with his wife and his son on the line, the main character still reaches for his cigarettes. A great story.

A plethora of demons.......2005-08-11
How easily Chinese history (that never was) segues into mythology. "Eight Skilled Gentlemen" is the third book in the 'Master Li and Number Ten Ox' trilogy, and these books should be near the top of everyone's favorite fantasies list.
The execrable villain, Sixth Degree Hosteler Tu is on the execution block at the beginning of "Eight Skilled Gentlemen." The executioner, who is going for the record in cleanly-performed beheadings by sword, botches this particular job for a very peculiar reason--a vampire ghoul crashes into the crowd around the execution block in pursuit of a band of frightened band of soldiers.
This is just the beginning of a bizarre monster-fest (in case you were wondering who the eight skilled gentlemen were.) These are demons like you've never seen before. For instance, the first demon-deity "resembles a three-year-old child with red eyes, long ears, and beautiful hair, and it kills by forcing its victims to strangle themselves."
Luckily Master Li happens upon Number Ten Ox before he finishes choking himself to death.
The plot is quite complicated, but the exotic settings and oddball characters kept this reader mightily entertained. In addition to the 'Eight Skilled Gentlemen,' there is a very old, partially deaf Celestial Master and saint who has some of the best lines in the book: at the funeral of a demon-slain high muckety-muck minister of state, he glares at a row of tight-lipped mandarins, and shouts, "Damn fools!...If you'd given Ma's corpse an enema you could have buried what remained in a walnut shell!"
Chinese saints seem to be much more opinionated and interesting than their European counterparts.
Master Li and Number Ten Ox join up with a puppeteer and his beautiful daughter to break up a ring of mandarin smugglers who are using mysterious cages to communicate with one another. The story finally resolves itself in a wild end-of-the-world dragon boat race that pits our two heroes against the gods.
I only wish Barry Hughart had continued on with this eccentric and wonderful myth of old China.
Another Hughart Winner.......2005-01-03
No surprise, another entertaining and delightful Li Kao and Number Ten Ox fantasy-adventure. The grisly murder of a prominent mandarin by a mysterious ghoul provides the catalyst for this duo to go delving into China's ancient mythology searching for the answers. Along the way, author Barry Hughart creates some of the most curious and imaginative heroes and villains you will ever encounter. Just superb.
Sadly, as noted by previous reviewers, this is the third and last book that the author has written in this series. On the bright side, the books he did write were all sparkling 5-star reads. Eight Skilled Gentlemen is a winner - just read it.
Another fun frolic through ancient China.......2004-05-26

Reviewed by Randy Farnsworth, Author of "A Stand Yet Taken"
Once again, Hughart has written an entertaining, humorous and engaging tale filled with history, tradition, intrigue, mystery and of course, a plethora of outlandish characters. Having read the first two books in the series, I found this to be less enjoyable than the others; the first is still the best of the three. That doesn't mean this is bad, however - I just don't think it's as good as the other two. This one goes a bit overboard in parts, such as the scene where they're disposing of a corpse by turning it into an extravagant banquet and serving it to the guests - humorous, but a bit over the top.
As a student of Chinese history, I am enthralled by stories, facts and traditions from the earliest of Chinese civilizations - such as the Shang, Xia, and earlier Neolithic and prehistoric cultures. While this book is set in 7th century China, it references the pre-"Chinese" China. In fact, the main plot centers around events that took place prior to China becoming China. The intertwining of tales and customs from "modern" (A.D. 640) China with those from three thousand years earlier is very intriguing. But, I must add, I also found it confusing at times with so many characters, events and stories. Hughart has a great gift for inventing stories, but in trying to convey all that to the reader, I must admit he lost me now and again.
As with the previous two books, this one tends to be a bit crass in places, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger readers. But the story really is fascinating and Hughart continually throws in enough facts with the fantasy that it's also quite educational.
More, please.......2004-01-20
I can't give this one five stars, the way I did _Bridge of Birds,_ but I can still heartily recommend this...this...mythological, poetic, mystery-fantasy? I don't know what else to call it. It's not as funny or luminous--indeed glorious!--as _Bridge of Birds,_ but it's still very much worth reading just for the fact no one else write like Hughart. From what I've heard, the author was supposed to write seven novels about Master Li and Number Ten Ox. One hopes that someday he will finish the series.
If only there were more.......2003-05-05
This is the last book released by Mr. Hughart. It was supposed to be the third in a series of seven, but due to compensation differences, he elected not to continue writing. It's a darn shame because his novels of a China that never was are truly wonderful. The third adventure of Master Li and Number Ten Ox involves murder, mayhem, and magic aplenty, with lots of Chinese literary references thrown in. Almost makes you believe you're reading history. This story is not quite up to the same standards as his first two, but it's a matter of interpretation. I love his work and I really wish he'd start writing again.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Everyone.......2005-06-08
The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox by Barry Hughart is a work of sheer outlandish fiction. It is a beast of a book at 652 pages long and is not for the faint of literary heart, but once you finish the book, you realize how much you really loved it and wanted more. This book fulfill the axiom of "you don't know what you have until it is gone".
The use of cliffhangers made this plot of coming of age a truly fast and addictive read. In the book, a country boy named Number Ten Ox from the village of Ku Fu must embark on a journey across China with the sage Master Li, who has a slight flaw in his character, to save the children of Ox's village from a terrible affliction. On the way they meet up with any number of foul and despicable villains and foil them with a devilishly clever series of tricks concocted by Master Li and inflicted by Ox. A great example is their sales pitch of a goat that can defecate gold while eating nothing but garbage, but what the buyer doesn't hear is this description. " The servant brought up the rear dragging a cart filled with garbage and cheap copper disks covered in gold leaf with a goat tethered to it."
I found the book unique because of the characters. Characters often recur and appear in different roles each time. Several villains, after being tricked by the dynamic duo see the error of their ways and come back into the story as supporting protagonists. However, the role of protagonist is slightly blurred, and this gives the book its strange appeal. It is hard to distinguish which characters are right. The villains are seen through the eyes of Ox and Master Li, but some of the tricks of these two are just as dastardly as the plots of the villains. However, with the fate of the children in their hands, Ox and Master Li seem to have Right on their side, and that makes you care. The moral ambiguity in the book reflects life and I believe that Hughart was trying to apply this story to real life. As with real life, there is nor a clear sense of Right and Wrong when it comes to some issues.
This is a beautifully written book in the sense of pure, rich description. "Master Li and I dazzled the eyes in tunics of sea-green silk that were secured by silver girdles with borders of jade. The jeweled pendants that dangled from our fine tasseled hats tinkled in the breeze, and we languidly waved gold-spattered Szech'uen fans." Also, the story construction leaves the reader interested and, often, wanting more and more. The author uses cliffhangers, such as this one, to help the book along. Ox and Master Li cause a disturbance in a resort town owned by a powerful duke and they have been sentenced to death in a labyrinth flooded by the tides. "Slim dark shapes were sliding across the dark floor like snakes. It was water, and the tide was coming in" There is a distinct uncertainty about how it is going to turn out for our heroes and the reader wants to find out more. The author also keeps the story moving with humor as when Ox meets the beautiful Lotus Flower and falls instantly and implacably in love with her. "'My surname is Lu and my personal name is Yu, but I am not to be confused with the eminent author of The Classic of Tea, and everyone calls me Number Ten Ox,' I moaned. She laughed softly and she said, 'I shall call you Boopsie.'"
You can tell by the above description and quotes from the book that the characters were not exactly designed by a Chinese author. Barry Hughart was born in the Midwest and was raised in Arizona. He did serve a tour of duty in Japan, and, interestingly, he developed a love affair with China from his experiences there. However, the critics seem to agree with me. They say that it should not be missed and are " a witty and original romp" and an "Oriental bouillabaisse of adventure and mystery". The critics and I seem to be in agreement that this is the perfect book for those who thirst for adventure, but need it mixed with some humor and fantasy to drink a whole glass. In other words, if you are an avid fantasy fan, a fan of Oriental literature, or just someone who likes a well written, funny book, The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox is truly the book for you

The History of Science Fiction Adventure.......2006-03-27
Armageddon 2419 A.D. (1928) by Philip Francis Nowlan - 98 pages - rating: 5.5/10
This story never gets into outer space. The plot surrounds the struggle of Americans fighting a guerilla war against invaders who have taken control of US soil hundreds of years earlier.
The name "Buck" as in Buck Rogers never appears in this book. The characters name is actually Anthony Rogers. He is referred to only as "Rogers" throughout the story. The name Buck was introduced in subsequent graphic novels to presumably improve marketing appeal.
It is interesting to read this short novel to gain a historical perspective on the origins of science fiction adventure. Although entirely straightforward the writing style itself is not particularly engaging or exciting. The term "flat" best describes the result. I read this book primarily for research reasons.
Much to my surprise the sequel entitled "The Airlords of Han"(1929 - 102 pages) which was included in the same volume, was quite enjoyable (7.0/10). The two stories are integrated into a single novel of 195 pages, 17 chapters, without any indication as to the point at which one novel ends and the second begins.
Overall I enjoyed having read the 2 stories although one could say that while The Airlords of Han would be enjoyed by anyone who likes early science fiction adventure, the original Buck Rogers story itself (Armageddon 2419 A.D.) should be saved for readers under 12 years of age.

A good tale, with slight racist and jingoistic undertones.......2000-12-13
I first read this book in childhood, and then several times later over the years. It is a great example of early 20th century sci-fi. More interestingly it sheds some light on the outlook and attitudes of the early 1900's and American national identity in particular. The crude stereotype of the Han 'anti-Asian' sentiments disguised by the possibility that they were 'mutated' by some aliens who crashed in Asia. The god given right of the white Americans to re-ascend from barbarism and take their rightful place as top dogs.
Having said that, the book seems more naive, rather than xenophobic in it's representations. I suspect this is more to do with the time it was written than anything else.
I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the history of Sci-Fi, or who just enjoys a good old-fashioned tale.
The Not-So-Far-Off Future.......2000-01-19
I recently re-discovered this book after reading it some 20 years ago. I was amazed at the parallels between the Han lifestyle and our own growing dependence on the internet for our commerce and entertainment. Knowing that the story was written in 1919 makes the predictions even more startling. The idea of "gangs" supplanting family life in America is also strangely prophetic. As to the story itself, what a fantastic tale of American ingenuity overcoming incredible odds! The triumph of the forest-dwelling Americans over the slovenly, city-dwelling Han is at once an inspiration and a cautionary tale. I'd say this seminal "Buck Rogers" tale is far superior to the pulp science fiction which followed in its footsteps. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in early 20th Century sci-fi, or anyone who just likes a good yarn.
Fun, Jules Verne-style SF.......1999-04-15
Forget the Television series. *This* is Buck Rogers. Thrown forward into an Earth of the distant future ruled by the evil Han empire, Rogers enlists with a group of American guerrillas to overthrow the oppressors. It features great early s-f devices--airships, anti-grav belts, and the like. Very reminiscent of ER Burroughs' "Barsoom" novels. Great fun, a great read.
The original Buck Rogers Novel.......1999-03-31
This is where "Buck" Rogers first appeared. He's just Anothony Rogers, a WWI vet who sleeps for 400 years. He awakes to find American under occupation and leads the fight for their freedom.

Super Reader.......2007-08-30
Anthony Rogers enters suspended animation in 1927 and wakes up in 2419.
He soon finds himself surrounded by some pretty cool technology, and in a military conflict. His military skills are still transferable to the present day, so he becomes an important player in the fight against the Han, especially with Wilma Deering by his side.
the real buck rogers.......2004-09-23
this book is a combination of the two original buck rogers stories together as one. these stories lead to the orignial comic strip. it tells how world war one veteran anthony rogers after investigating an incident at a remote mine wakes up five hundred years in the future. to an occupied america ruled by the air lords of the han with there glimming cities and giant air ships suspended on beams of force. they supress the remants of the american population who live by stealh in the forests with there secrect factories and their plans to liberated thier homeland from the han invaders. into this mess in dumped buck rogers with his knowledge of combat and tactics long forgotten and with his help the han's days are numbered.

Great Easy Recipes.......2007-08-23
I'm 60 years old and never had a slow cooker until a few months ago. This cookbook has my husband convinced that I've become a genius in the kitchen! I'm learning a lot by making various recipes, so that now I'm able to adapt some and invent some of my own! Yum!
Don't buy this terrible book!.......2006-11-25
I had purchased this book about a year ago...and I have YET to make something edible from it! I have tried multiple chicken, beef, and vegetable dishes, and they were all awful! Last night, in fact, I made the Oriental Beef and Broccoli on page 163, and it BURNED. I know...I didn't think you COULD burn something in the crock pot without a serious effort to do just that...but it happened! I had it set for 8 hours on LOW, as the recipie states 8 to 10 hours on low, and 6 hours into the cooking process, I checked it... and the meat was burned! I was shocked! What a waste and a dissapointment! We ended up eating frozen pizza, and the book has ended up in the trash! My crock pot gets used at least once a week, so it wasn't that, and I double checked the recipie. It wasn't end user error....Better homes and Gardens just dosn't check their recipies any more! I am very dissapointed with this waste of paper they call a cookbook...and it's not the first time I have been dissapointed by Better Homes and Gardens product. Don't even get me started on the toaster oven I bought on their reccommendation.....They have gone to He** in a handbasket...Shape up, BH&G!! You are losing customers with your poor quality!!:(!
More than just pot roast and chili..........2005-12-31
I think that whether a person likes this book will depend some on his/her expectations when beginning to use it, and upon his/her experience w/ other cookbooks for slow-cookers.
I checked this book out of the library a while back. I own a couple of slow cooker books that I don't like much, and wanted to 'try before I buy'. I agree with other reviewers' comments that most slow-cooker cookbooks are a little heavy on pot roast and chili. While both are represented in this book, too, I was pleasantly surprised to see that recipes for 'sides' and grain dishes are *far* more numerous than in the other slow cooker books I've seen (=a lot). I was also expecting to see far more prepared foods on the ingredient lists than there turned out to be. (The number is greater than '0' and far less than 'all'. I use 0.) I made the "Cumin & Coriander Pork" which is pork shoulder with cider vinegar, sour cream, onions, mushrooms, and some seasonings. I thought it was excellent; and it was a combination that I absolutely would not have invented on my own, even though in retrospect it seems like a no-brainer.
I renewed the book once from the library -- and have not seen it on the shelf since I returned it. Since I'd have to wait weeks to check it out again, I am just going to buy a copy in order to try the other recipes. It's not expensive, so it will be easily worth the price to have such an extensive book as a source for new ideas -- and after that pork shoulder recipe I have high hopes for the quality of a significant number of the other recipes I read through while I had it. I'm definitely *not* a good enough cook that I can toss together a bunch of random food, cook it for like 12 hours, and be able to count on an edible result. Based on my experience with it thus far, I'll be glad of the help offered by this book.
I give it '3 stars' for now because I haven't tried any of the other recipes. I may increase the number down the road.
Easy cooking for a working mom.......2005-09-05
Lots of recipe variety, minimum effort. Delicious meat and vegetarian options. I leave the slow cooker on while sleeping at night or during the day while I am at work.
Helpful and fun!.......2004-03-22
One of the things I loved about this book was that you didn't have to spend a lot of extra money on spices that you'll use one time. The author was brilliant to incorporate ready-made items that you can use for a recipe.. then use the remainder for something else. The book itself is laid out well which makes it easy to read. The only drawback would the spiral plastic spine. Those never do last very long without them coming partially undone.

Monitors (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).......2007-08-31
Whereas monitors receive moderate treatment in this book, Tegus seem to have been (literally) added as an afterthought. Many sections speak at length about varanid behavior for several pages, only to end with "Tegus are also somewhat like this except ..." (and a few words).
If you're serious about keeping monitors, there are more detailed and useful resources (The Natural History of Monitor Lizards, Monitors: The Biology of Varanid Lizards). This book does suffice as an account of common species and might serve as a good introduction and general reference to monitor husbandry.
Most useful.......2006-09-13
I have already read the Bartletts book about Green Iguanas and liked a lot. This one too has beautiful pictures and useful line drawings. The text is easy and comprehensive, with lots of important tips. I think it makes a complete hobbist book.
very good book.......1999-03-16
This book is very good and very complete in discussing various monitor lizards and basics about monitor for the beginner and intermediate keeper. Husbandry is mentioned in some detail. A good book to start with.
THE excellent, one-source starter book on the subject........1999-03-13

This book is more than I expected. The text is interesting and get's you pumped up to try something new. Very detailed and thoughtful info. The photos are great. I'm already using some of the techniques on my current decorating assignment. This is a keeper for my library on design.
Best of the lot.......2000-03-28
I'm pretty familiar with books on painting and decorating and have quite a few. This book will soon become one of my staples. Not only are the decorating ideas fresh and good looking, but he gives whole room views instead of a little color swatch of what the finish looks like. I ordered 10 painting books at the same time and this was the only one I kept. I'm starting on my first big project out of this book next month. I would even rate this book and author higher than Debbie Travis because his instructions are easier and his projects are less "primitive" looking than hers. She was my previous mentor so this is saying a lot.
great tool for those of us who want to improve our skills.......1999-09-19

Colors For Living.......2001-08-21
While I was initially attracted to the basic concept, layout, and the presentation of the color schemes in this book, many of the actual interiors seem extremely dated. I think that the color swatches at the back of the book are a useful resource, but for actual interior design ideas there are other books on the market that I feel are far superior.
Book Description
A fascinating and idiosyncratic journey through colour — its history, its meaning, and its effect on everyday life.
Janice Lindsay, an experienced colour designer with a background in art history and design, has always been passionate and curious about colour. In this book she shares a lifetime of discoveries about why colour, something we think will be simple to use and understand, is so complex. She takes us on a journey that combines history, biology, and interior design with personal insights from years of helping others choose colour and get it right. Along the way she recounts how a yellow was once made from cow’s urine and can be used as an intellectual stimulant. How blue used to be considered light black before it gained popularity and became more expensive than gold. And how vermilion red used to look better the longer it was ground — twenty years was just about long enough.
Lindsay explains how the invisible colour in daylight is as essential to our bodies as air and water. Colour is not just decoration, it has the power to change how we feel and function. She tells stories of colour-blind clients, of clients who thought they were happy living without colour until they found out what they were missing, and students whose marks improved once colour was added to the halls. Lindsay explains how we have a colour wisdom that is millions of years in the making based on nature encoded into our DNA and that we need to draw on that wisdom to humanize our built environments. Colour can make a house a home.
This book is about you. You and colour are linked in ways that we haven’t imagined. Beware: after reading this book you will never look at colour the same way again.

Book Description
Damien Hirst's Alone Yet Together, a pseudoscientific installation of fish suspended in formaldehyde in small, identical glass boxes, graces the cover of this volume. As the singular image selected to represent the Pisces Collection, it demands some exploration of wordplay. Pisces is, after all, the zoological term for fish and also the name of a zodiac sign--the astrological sign, as it happens, of the collection's anonymous owner. Devoted to contemporary art from the 1980s onward, the Pisces Collection takes not an encyclopedic approach but a focused one, concentrating on representing the work of a relatively small group of artists in depth. For the first time, 150 pieces from this very valuable collection are presented to the international public, featuring work by John M. Armleder, Ross Bleckner, George Condo, Wim Delvoye, Fischli & Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Mariko Mori, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Ugo Rondinone, Thomas Ruff, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Rosemarie Trockel, Franz West, and Christopher Wool. Highlights from the 80s include Prince's My Name and Koons's Encased Five Rows; the 90s are represented through photographic works by Sherman and Gursky, alongside Struths's Paradise 2 (Pilgrim Sands). Hirst's Something solid beneath the surface of several creatures great and small, with its use of live and dead animals, is one of the collection's more controversial pieces.

Customer Reviews:
He's so cool.......2001-05-16
Wow, David Salle is an amazing artist. And Massimo Audiello is an extremely interesting and intellectual person. Mr. Salle proves to go beyond the cramped confines of the boho noho soho art scene, and is up there with the greats, like Leroy Neiman, Victor Vasarely and Erte. A stunner!

Customer Reviews:
Good book, important book, but apparently flawed.......2004-01-30
I hadn't expected to enjoy the account of Jones' early days leading up to his pro football career. But that was the best part of the book. Once I got halfway through his career I started skipping large chunks of text.
The football tales were interesting, but not engrossing. What makes the book worthwhile to me is the account of Jones' struggle with racism through most of his life, including his early years in the NFL.
That said, I was disappointed to see that the book is written in semi-fiction style in that whole conversations that were never taped or even could have been taped are reproduced as if they were transcribed by a stenographer. It seems obvious that the authors made it up. That doesn't necessarily mean that the conversations presented don't accurately reflect what was said at the time. But the authors don't even acknowledge that they have put words in people's mouths.
In the same vein, I got the impression that some of the stories of Jones' life, as presented in the book, are apocryphal, or at least based mainly on Jones' memory.
For example, one story has Jones meeting Jackie Robinson as a teenager. He had just seen a Dodgers game and witnessed a white player step on Robinson's hand. He said something to Robinson along the lines of
HeadSlap.......2002-10-19
I have idolized Deacon Jones all of my life, and this book really made The Deacon out to be everything I thought he was. The reason I liked the book so much was the fact that it not only covered his unrealistically impressive football career, but also covered his entire life from childhood all the way through his retirement from the NFL. It really gave you a real feel of the hard, grueling times he went through back in the days of racism and presidium. I recommend this book for anyone, even those who are not interested in football, fore is a book far from only being about football, but a book of struggle, anger, distress, and overcoming all obstacles in order to succeed greatly in life.
This is a not a self-serving biography. I learned a lot........1996-12-07
I met Deacon Jones about two months after I read this book. I felt like I had actually known him for a long time and even played with him. The author did a great job in describing the man, especially his youth in Florida, during the fifties. If you like sports and understand the discipline and dedication that a good athlete puts into his profession you will experience it in this documentary that reads like a novel. In some ways, this book is a history of the NFL as seen through the practical eyes of a humble and sincere young man who came from a small town in the "old south" and was never groomed for college or the NFL.
This is the first biography that I read completely without getting tired of all the subject's glories. The book is not self-serving. It should be mandatory reading for all high school athletes especially football players and their coaches.
