Book Description
Home repair can be murder.
Jacobia Tiptree and her teenage son are used to their Eastport, Maine, home attracting more than its share of houseguests. This year Jake is hoping the plaster dust will keep them away while she finally gets her gem of a fixer-upper into shape — from doorknobs and chandeliers to leaky pipes to ghostly phenomena.
But when the charming and mysterious Jonathan Raines appears on her doorstep — and then just as suddenly disappears — remodeling the house becomes the least of Jake’s problems. Could Jonathan’s disappearance have something to do with his quest for a cursed violin — the one that local legend says was hidden by a long-ago owner of Jake’s house before he too vanished without a trace?
Soon Jonathan’s grief-stricken girlfriend arrives downeast, and Jake needs to strip Eastport’s past of its idyllic veneer — before a killer paints her very dead indeed!

Wicked Good Reading.......2002-07-30
Repair to Her Grave is the fourth tight, enticing paperback mystery, set in Eastport, Maine, and starring home-restorer, Manhattan-escapee, and general busybody Jacopia Tiptree. Her colonial-era house is falling apart, and possibly haunted, her ex-husband has moved to Eastport just to annoy her, her teenage son has taken up scuba-diving and emulating his father's philadering ways, and now various New York friends want to show up for the summer, including one who may or may not be looking for the legendary treasure hidden years ago by the very man whose unresting spirit may be haunting Jake's house...
These are great reads, constantly deceptive, and I appreciate the way in which Graves doesn't sentimentalize the Down East socio-economic environment and the people of Eastport, but presents it as a modern place with modern problems, even if its history (and its residents' collective memory) does go back and back and back...She also manages some very funny moments (the ladies' literary society is meeting at her house, and the plaster is falling off the walls, and a friend thinks he's solved the problem by hanging an oversize velvet painting of Elvis over the damage) as well as making her characters vivid and memorable.
Just right for a day-on-the-beach read.
More fun on the way........2002-04-30
In the fun and humorous manner we have come to expect from this author, Jacobia finds herself the unwilling recipient of a houseguest who shows up five days before Jake is due to host an afternoon tea with the local Garden Club (or some such commitee). Ironically enough, Jacobia's houseguest disappears without a trace, but then his mournful girlfriend and her uncle show up. The main theme is whether or not there really is a vast treaure hidden somewhere by the original owner of Jacobia's house. As always, Jacobia's life becomes a whirlwind of suspicions and mishaps, all done with a touch of humor that this author is so good at putting into her books.
Is there really a treasure hidden in Jake's house?.......2001-10-14
Jacobie Tiptree has a great deal on her plate just now. Her old house is still in the process of restoration, her exhusband still lives in Eastport, her son is seeing a girl she doesn't like, her ghost is unpredictable, and worst of all, a summer guest she doesn't remember inviting has invaded her home for the summer to finish his dissertation. At least, that is what he said he was there for. Jake believes that he is there to search for a Stradivarius allegedly hidden in the house by a former owner. Jake believes that this is merely a local legend and is incensed when her guest disappears, allegedly drowned, leaving a huge hole in her dining room wall just days before the local reading circle is due to meet in her home.
The visitor's exgirlfriend Charmian arrives to bring home the body(there is none given the currents surrounding Eastport) and dives into the mystery herself. Jon Raines wasn't a graduate student, he was an adventurer who looked for lost treasures. Charmian's uncle wouldn't let them get married(sounds a little like a gothic romance doesn't it?), so he went off to find a real treasure to make his reputation. The uncle also makes a trip to Eastport, but thankfully, doesn't stay with Jake.
This was a very good addition to the series, Jake and Ellie solve the mystery with the usual help of the local characters and their families. This was a very fast read, great to take on vacation.
Another Excellent Entry in This Series.......2001-08-18
This is the fourth entry featuring Jacobia Tiptree, former Wall Street financial advisor, recently retired to the small Maine town of Eastport. There she has purchased a fixer-upper, which at times, seems to be haunted, but certainly has a history. After an unknown person has plunged to his almost-certain death off the cliffs, she has to deal with a visitor from the City whom she may or may not have invited to stay with her and whom may or may not be who and what he says he is and seems to be interested in the age-old story of an unknown Stradivarius said to have been secreted away by her house's original owner.
While Jake battles the house to keep it standing, she has to deal with this stranger, her 18-year-old son's infatuation with a girl Jake considers to be inappropriate, and, certainly not least, the ladies reading club is meeting at her house this month and her mysterious guest has knocked a hole in her dining room wall.
Graves gives us a multi-faceted plot with several story lines, new as well as familiar characters, and, of course Maine. She is a talented writer who is able to keep all the story lines moving right along, keep the mystery moving toward a satisfactory end, and continue to grow her characters.
If you haven't read anything in this series, start with DEAD CAT BOUNCE, the first in the series, and you'll read the three other entries. Then, you'll join the ranks of her other fans eagerly awaiting the next entry in this excellent, if not eccentric, series. And, much to your surprise, hHer writing about Eastport will make you want to move there tomorrow - snow or no snow because you'll smell the ocean as it wafts in on the sea breeze.
A gohic like cozy.......2001-08-01
Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree used to be a high flyer living in a posh townhouse in Manhattan with her physician husband and their son. Everything turned to ashes when she learned her husband was cheating on her and her son was smoking weed. Deciding they had to get out of their environment, she divorced her husband and took her son to Eastport, Maine population about 2000.
Her new home is delightful except when the poltergeists act up but on the bright side, her son is off all drugs and doesn't drink. The only fly in the ointment is that her ex husband followed her up here to be near them. This year Jonathan Raines, a student doing his thesis, wants to be the summer guest since Jake gave him permission almost a year ago. When Jonathan disappears Jake thinks foul play occurred. When Jonathan's fiancee and her uncle suddenly appear he believes they're all looking for the Stradivarius that is supposedly hidden in her house.
Sarah Graves writes an interesting cozy that is dark and foreboding instead of lighthearted and non-threatening. It makes for fascinating reading and the touch of the paranoia adds some spice to this tasty brew. REPAIR TO HER GRAVE is a straightforward story with complex characters that have many different facets making Ms. Graves' star seem imminent in the mystery galaxy.

Book Description
"Birthdays may be difficult for me."
"I want you to take the initiative in opening conversations about my birth family."
"When I act out my fears in obnoxious ways, please hang in there with me."
"I am afraid you will abandon me."
The voices of adopted children are poignant, questioning. And they tell a familiar story of loss, fear, and hope. This extraordinary book, written by a woman who was adopted herself, gives voice to children's unspoken concerns, and shows adoptive parents how to free their kids from feelings of fear, abandonment, and shame.
With warmth and candor, Sherrie Eldridge reveals the twenty complex emotional issues you must understand to nurture the child you love--that he must grieve his loss now if he is to receive love fully in the future--that she needs honest information about her birth family no matter how painful the details may be--and that although he may choose to search for his birth family, he will always rely on you to be his parents.
Filled with powerful insights from children, parents, and experts in the field, plus practical strategies and case histories that will ring true for every adoptive family,
Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew is an invaluable guide to the complex emotions that take up residence within the heart of the adopted child--and within the adoptive home.

Great Book for Adoptive Parents and possibly Adoptee's.......2007-09-27
I have just begun reading this book but can already tell it is going to be very helpful for my husband and I and how we bring up our daughter. It is essential to know these things beforehand and to be equipped for how to deal with them.
Book review.......2007-09-13
This is an awesome book and filled with valuable and useful information for ALL parties within the adoption triad!
Scary book.......2007-08-12
I would NOT recommend this book to anyone considering adoption and the recommendations that Ms. Eldridge gives for adoptive children could be very psychologically harmful to children.
Focuses on negative, but is realistic.......2007-08-09
I am adopting 2 boys and when I first read this book it totally scared me! It seemed like there was no way that anything positive could come out of adoption. At the same time, my older sister was adopted as a child and I could see so much of what was written in what played out in my family growing up.
This book is real and it is important to learn from the pain others have gone through to try to ease that for the future generations of adopted children. This book does complain - that's often what we do. But while doing so, it sheds light on the internal pain that many people who have been adopted can feel.
Do not read this book as your sole source of information though. There are a number of books that offer practical advice that will give hope and understanding on how to talk positively about adoption, how to love your entire family without guilt, and how to give the love that the child needs.
On a side note: I let my mom read this book and at first she was upset by it. She had done the best job she could to raise her adopted child just as she did the rest of us. After some time away from the book and after several talks, she came to understand that by "ignoring" the differences she was not helping her daughter and just because her daughter didn't bring up the adoption didn't mean that she wasn't thinking about it all the time.
Yesterday to Today: A book I hated 5 years ago is suddenly really good.........2007-08-01
Adopted children have a range of specific needs as a result of their backgrounds. These are described by Sherrie Eldridge in her book "Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew".
As an adoptee and an adoptive mom, it had been for many years my opinion that people wrote adoption books with the main objective of making money or becoming an 'expert'. I have seen a few really good ones over the years, and quite a few bad ones. When the following book crept across my review-table years ago, I barely gave it a glance, mentally classifying it as more rubbish about how adopted kids are particularly messed up.
Oh, how time can change our thinking! Some of my kids are older now and we have walked through their developmental changes, their yearnings, their wonderings. That search-for-self can be so very painful, but does it always have to be? And must every child agonize through it alone? I was wrong about this book. I have recognized that it is a useful guide to parents, and I want to give it my highest recommendation today.
Each month I will review one or two books that are think are the Good Ones. They will not all be newly published. Some, like this one, will be re-visited and given the proper review that I now know they deserve. In fact, in the review department, I have more books than I can possibly read. If you are a good writer and are experienced with reviewing, please contact me and I'll be glad to have publishers send samples!
Excerpt from Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew
By Sherrie Eldridge (Dell Publishing)
The special needs of adopted children as expressed in the child's words:
Educational Needs :
* I need to be taught that adoption is both wonderful and painful, presenting lifelong challenges for everyone involved.
* I need to know my adoption story first, then my birth story and birth family.
* I need to be taught healthy ways for getting my special needs met.
* I need to be prepared for hurtful things others may say about adoption and about me as and adopted person.
Emotional Needs:
I need help in recognizing my adoption loss and grieving it
I need to be assured that my birth parents' decision not to parent me had nothing to do with anything defective in me.
I need help in learning to deal with my fears of rejection-to learn that absence doesn't mean abandonment, or a closed door that I have dome something wrong.
I need permission to express all my adoption feelings and fantasies.
Validation Needs :
* I need validation of my dual heritage (biological and adoptive).
* I need to be assured often that I am welcome and worthy.
* I need to be reminded often by my adoptive parents that they delight in my biological differences and appreciate my birth family's unique contribution to our family through me.
Relational Needs:
* I need friendships with other adopted persons.
* I need to be taught that there is a time to consider searching for my birth family and a time to give up searching.
* I need to be reminded that if I am rejected by my birth family, the rejection is about them, not me.
Spiritual Needs :
* I need to be taught that my life narrative began before I was born and that my life is not a mistake.
* I need to be taught that in this broken, hurting world loving families are formed through adoption as well as birth.
* I need to be taught that I have intrinsic, immutable value as a human being.
* I need to accept the fact that some of my adoption questions may never be answered in this life.
It would be wonderful if there were an outline...a course-book that came with every human born or adopted into each family. Many of the things above, such as 'I need to be assured that I am welcome and worthy', could be used with any child, anywhere. It is a gift of the greatest value to give your child the knowledge that they belong somewhere, they are wanted and cherished. I highly recommend this book, and hope you will learn from it, as I have. Perhaps a little bit later than I should have, but that is the benefit fo life: It gives plently of second chances.

fruitcake memories of truman capote & sook.......2001-01-15
Marie Rudisill is absolutely fabulous with this fruitcake book. This is by far the most wonderful cook book i have ever seen in my entire life. I was also able to read other of Rudisills books and she is one of the best writers there is and has ever been. Two thumbs up to Rudisill on the Jay Leno show. She was funny keeping Jay and Mel Gibson in line. I strongly recommend everyone to try this delightful fruitcake book. Check out The Southern Haunting of Truman Capote, it was inspiring learning about his childhood in the south.
FRUITCAKE MEMORIES.......2001-01-03
MARIE RUDISILL HAS OUT DONE HERSELF WITH THIS FANTASTIC BOOK. IT NOT ONLY GIVES WONDERFUL RECEIPS IT ALSO SHARES MEMORIES OF TRUMAN CAPOTE AND SOOK FAULK..THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THIS BEST COOKBOOK I HAVE EVER OWNED. I ALSO HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING MS. RUDISILL ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO AND MEL GIBSON, THIS WAS THE BEST EPSIODE I EVER SAW..SHE HAD NO TROUBLE KEEPING THESE TWO MEN IN LINE, AND IT SEEMED THEY ENJOYED EVERY BIT OF IT...
DYNAMITE.......2000-12-17
A wonderful reflection of a generation as much as a collection of effective recipes. It doesn't just seem appropriate that the subject of fruitcake stirs this focused book. The times were tough and the cake ingredients reflected that. Speaking of charmingly tough, Marie Rudisill's moments with Mel Gibson and Jay Leno should make the Late Night hall of fame. As a Capote aunt, you'd almost expect a wry scolding, but with both men up to their wrists in fruitcake batter, the pleadings to be careful with her prized recipe were loving and comfortable. So is this book.

a waste of money...........2007-08-08
A better title for this book might have been "The Small Parrot Handbook". I thought I was getting an in depth handbook on parrotlet care and breeding, but what I got was a book that deals in generalities of many different birds. Forget buying this book. You will learn much more from surfing the web. A total waste of money. Wait! I have just discovered that if you carefully remove the pages, they will fit perfectly 3 wide by 3 deep in the bottom of my bird cage. Maybe I should give another star...
Very disappointing.......2005-08-24
If you are looking for information on the care of pet parrotlets, take a pass on this one. There are few pages devoted to that topic, and lots and lots about the history of the breed, and lots and lots about small parrots that are not parrotlets.
Good book for breeders...........2004-09-25
Because I keep many birds, I've read many books on the topic by Matthew Vriends. Vriends raises several kinds of tropical birds, visits their natural habitats, is involved in the preservation of wild birds and their habitats, and writes extensively on these topics. He is also a PhD (Dutch born biologist and ornithologist). I bought THE PARROTLET HANDBOOK in spite of the fact one reviewer said there was not much of interest about Parrotlets in this book, mainly because I have read so many of Vriends other books on other birds and found them helpful.
THE PARROTLET BOOK is very interesting, but it is also geared to the breeder of this type of bird. As the owner of two brother Parrotlets, I don't foresee joining the breeder group any time soon, even though Vriends makes a compelling case for becoming a breeder of Parrotlets who are under threat from the deforestation of the Amazon jungle.
In spite of the book's bias - which I truly appreciate, it does include many helpful tips and a good deal of information about the various types of Parrotlets who are companions of people like me. For one thing the book helps one understand the origins the little birds whose ancestors come from South America and who seem be thought of by some as the little brother of the larger Macaw.
My Parrotlet brothers have been hand raised from the egg stage and they are Soooo sweet. However, I am told the Parrotlet can administer a nasty bite should he be "wild" or displeased. My birds perch on my finger (two at a time) and are a lot less messy than my Cockatiels and Love Birds. Maintenance-wise, keeping Parrotlets is a bit like keeping Canaries. However, they are as playful as my Senegal parrot.
I found a really great article on Parrotlets entitled "True Confession-Parrotlet owners bring down the house with tales of pin-sized adventures" in the January 2004 issue of Bird Talk Magazine (if you keep birds or are thinking of doing so, subscribe to this magazine). I recommend both Vriends book and Bird-Talk magazine for the serious bird owner.
Off Topic.......2004-08-18
I bought this book hoping to find out more about parrotlet care, training and behavior. Instead, it reads like a mini0encyclopedia of all small parrots. Most of the parrots listed in this book are not even seen in pet stores. The author should SERIOUSLY think about revising this book OR changing the title.
Glad I didn't buy it=(.......2003-01-26
I actually went to my local book store that promotes you go through the books before you buy them.I sat down and read the whole thing.Thinking if it was good I'd buy it for future referrence. It had almost no care on parrotlets.A few scientific things for each type of parrotlet. Then the rest of the book was on hanging parrots, ect. The title should not be the parrotlet book. It's very misleading.I feel sorry for the people that got this book to find out it didn't have much info in it.The best bet is if you have access to the web just look up parrotlet care. That's where I found the most info.Hope this was helpful.

Customer Reviews:
Very Useful!.......2002-05-04
This book covers the business side of rubberstamping in just the way I needed. Other books tell you how to start a small/home business, but this one looks at it from the crafting and stamping angles. She explains the Angel Stamp policy, which I had trouble finding anywhere else. My only complaint is that I paid for expedited shipping and the book was shipped three days later than promised.
Rubberstamping For Fun & Profit.......2002-01-06
This is a terrific book. I've read alot of Maria Narius columns over the years and her easy to uderstand style of writing comes through with flying colors. There's so many things explained that I questions for and more in all topics she covers.
Not what I expected.......2001-11-01
Thought it would at least have some good card samples or tips on how to make great cards to gain that profit. Maybe i was expecting the wrong thing. But it doesn't have what I was looking for.
Not What the Doctor Ordered.......2001-10-02
This is a great book but for very different reasons than what I ordered it for. It goes a long way in helping you with all the inevitable details that one has to think of when one starts a business - for this I give High Praise. What I thought I was ordering was a book that went into the details of making professional "business type" stamps, the ones that are self inking (or not) - this book is fantastic if your looking to turn a hobby into a business - for they go to great lengths to prepare you for that. It is not the book to teach you to do it in an "industrial strength" manner. I wish you all a great adventure into this - I can be fun! And very rewarding!
Kevin.
Rubberstamping Made Easy!.......2000-08-28
I have been stamping for years, and I thought I knew it all. This book gave me some new ideas and techniques that I am eager to try, along with some new twists on some old ideas. Maria gives good basic information on tools and supplies. Her suggestion of mixing your own embossing powders, along with the recipies to make some wonderful combinations is quite novel. I had fun trying it, with great results. This book will inspire you to grab that heat gun and start stamping!
Book Description
The life of the black religious servant Ursula de Jesús (1604-1666) has remained one of the best-kept historical secrets of the New World. This English language translation of the diary she began in 1650 allows us to hear the voice of the former slave turned spiritualist.
Born into slavery in Lima, Peru, Ursula entered a convent at the age of thirteen to serve a nun, and spent the next twenty-eight years as one of hundreds of slaves whose exhausting daily work afforded little time to contemplate religious matters. After surviving a potentially fatal accident, she chose a spiritual path, though remained a slave until one of the nuns purchased her freedom. Ursula began to see visions and communicate more frequently with God. Dead souls eager to diminish their stay in Purgatory approached her, and it was then that she assumed the role of intercessor on their behalf.
Ursula's diary conveys the innuendos of convent life, but above all it offers a direct experience of baroque Catholic spirituality from the perspective of a woman of color. Nancy E. van Deusen selected approximately fifty pages from Ursula's diary to appear here as Ursula wrote them, in Spanish. Van Deusen's introduction situates Ursula's text within the milieu of medieval and early modern female spirituality, addresses the complexities of racial inequality, and explores the power of the written word.
See "Read more" below to go to an excerpt from the original diary (pdf format).
This translation of part of the diary of a 17th century Peruvian mystic includes the convent life of slaves and former slaves and baroque Catholic spiritual experiences from the perspective of a woman of color.
