With an unbroken string of bestsellers dating from the early '70s (beginning with 1971's The Scarlatti Inheritance) and over 200 million books sold, Robert Ludlum is an acknowledged superstar of the political thriller. Gayle Lynds, who was compared to Ludlum after her 1996 debut, Masquerade, has two successful novels and a slew of pseudonymous pulp fiction titles to her credit. Together--after a fashion--they serve up book 1 of Ludlum's new Covert-One series of trade paperback originals, Robert Ludlum's the Hades Factor.
After three disparate Americans succumb to a hitherto unknown Ebola-like virus, the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) is pressed into service. Since the USAMRIID's top doc (and former military intelligence operative) Lt. Col. Jon Smith has yet to return from an overseas conference, the job of heading the medical research team falls to Smith's colleague and fiancée, Dr. Sophia Russell.
Upon Smith's return, he is sequentially treated to a life-or-death warning from a childhood friend (and rogue FBI agent), several nasty near-death experiences, and the viscerally graphic demise of his wife-to-be, an apparent virus victim. Enraged and bereaved, Smith flies into investigatory action only to discover doctored files, expunged records, and the distinct likelihood that he's dealing with cases of murder-by-virus. As more questions are asked, more deaths occur, official channels slam shut, and Smith finds himself a wanted man, battling his best friend, an evil-genius gazillionaire scientist, corrupt politicians, and Third World terrorists. In other words, it's Smith versus all the usual suspects.
Ludlum and Lynds cover no new ground here (and their prose is less than sterling). In fact, The Hades Factor owes as much to Tom Clancy's Op-Center series--cocreated by Clancy and Steve Pieczenik--and Richard Preston's The Hot Zone as it does to Ludlum's own considerable body of work. That said, The Hades Factor still delivers a respectable level of intrigue and suspense, will likely be snapped up by output-starved Ludlum fanciers, and will be right at home on the bed stands of Preston fans. --Michael Hudson

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The first of a spin-off series of Ludlum's, done with another writer. The protagonist here is a doctor, but he is also secretly a spy for an ultra-clandestine spook type group in the USA.
The doctor's wife is involved in looking into a mysterious ebola sort of situation, and the doctor is tasked to help out, under a supposedly plausible cover, to see what is going on.
how does something this bad get published?.......2007-07-23
Of course the answer is having Robert Ludlum's name associated with it. I am a long time Ludlum fan but this book is poorly written. Words are misused, the dialogue is clumsy and flat, there is an obvious attempt to substitute inappropriate multisyllabic words for decent writing. Don't waste your time with this.
This Book is Ludlum's Best.......2007-06-07
I thought that this is one of Robert Ludlum's best books, it ties in the possible future as well as lots of very interesting action. Everything that is written in this book is written in such a way, that it sounds like it could actually happen. The plot takes off very fast and does not slow down, it is a very good page turner for anyone who likes: action, scientific fiction, and gun battles. One tip that I will give for reading is, make sure you keep track of names. Overall, I thought that this book is Ludlum's best and everyone who likes an action packed book should read it.
Good and very well worth reading, but..........2006-10-25
But what?!? In this book there are a lot and I mean a lot of plot conveniences that keep the story on track. I wont give you specifics, but you will see when you read it how often the main character starts on a journey to find a mythical needle in a haystack only to come home and find it sitting on his front step nicely wrapped and ready for him to succeed. How many times can the one key in the universe that will save all humanity end up being in the very exact place you go to find it? Ludlum usually writes that some neighbor or old girlfriend or sister to an old girlfriend or some one you knew in college has it--the one key you need to save humanity. How many times is the only person in the universe with the exact right background and the exact right qualifications found to be in the exact right place at the exact right time to save the day? I found myself saying, "Come on!" a lot. But I've read this book more than once, more than twice, more than three times, and that says a lot about it too.
COT BookClub Review III.......2006-08-29
We are back. Well, this book was not as good as others we have read. It was okay, however it was too unrealistic. We understand sometimes the author will exaggerate in order to keep the story/character alive. But this book was a little too much. 1) LTC Smith was way too James Bondish for a doctor. No mention of special forces training or ranger training. But, because he was a MASH commander, all his killer instincts came back. 2) With all the shooting going on, no signs of local law enforcement. 3) Whole Iraq setting was hard to believe. Furthermore, his characters were very choppy. His characters were in and out of the story without any further information. Some characters just vanished from the book. This was our first Ludlum's book and we were not impressed. We do not recommend buying this book and we recommend reading this book only if all your favorite authors are not available. I hope this review helped. Our next review is the TV series "Over There" (taking a little break from reading). Thanks and COT out!!!

Oz never grows old in the heart.......2002-01-06
This Oz novel, like all oz novels, is really a childs book. Nothing makes a lot of sense sometimes, and things tend to contradict earlier novels. The read is good for any Oz fan though. I love the land of Oz, and over look all contradictions, and things that are absurd and just sit down for a good humorous night of reading. This book will take your mind away for a few hours. Take it away to a far away place, where we never have to grow up, and everything is wonderful and great. It has some of the major charactors star in it, and introduces new and wonderful charactors. The journey they undergo, although it is a little absurd, is funny and amusing. If you liked any of the other Oz novels after the first one, then you should enjoy this one as well. If you are an Oz fan, then no collection can be complete without this whimsical book added to your collection.
Terrific!.......1999-07-26

Book Description
Organizing books fall short of addressing the unique needs of adults with ADD. They fail to understand the clinical picture of ADD and how it impacts the organizing process often making their advice irrelevant or frustrating when put into application. Books about ADD may address organization/disorganization but do so in a cursory fashion and on a very small scale in what are usually long books on the subject. This is a book that has ADD-Friendly advice with the ADDer in mind. This collaboration brings forth the best underlying understanding with the most effective and practical remedy from ADD experts in two important fields -- professional organization and clinical psychology. Finally, it offers organizing advice that ranges from self-help to utilizing the help of non-professionals, to using professional assistance. Thus it permits the reader to decide where they are at personally in the organizing process, and what level of support will be most beneficial to their unique situation.

Organized & ADD.......2007-08-18
This is a very good book that shows a true understanding of ADD. The ideas are easy to follow and very beneficial to anyone with ADD. One of the best books I have ever purchased. In short it explains you & your thoughts & holds you a countable but in an easy to do ADD way of operating.
Excellent Resource.......2007-08-07
A well-written guide for adults with ADHD or those of us who are overwhelmed. The book is formatted in a highly readable style that uses bullet inserts to draw your attention and summarize the tips on the page, then you can read the text for the details. Clearly written, extremely helpful, practical advice.
Finally, simple solutions for adults with ADD.......2007-06-09
This is the best organizing book I have read, and I have been reading them since the 1970s. This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review. This book is specific for those of us with ADD. There are very simple solutions to everyday storage and home management problems as well as time management, which are directed to those of us with ADD. We no longer have to live in a mess!! There are user friendly ideas in this book. I have had piles of papers cluttering up my tables, my floor and my life. I am in the process of sorting through "stuff" and simplifying and I am looking forward to seeing all my furniture and floors again. One drawer at a time, one table at a time, one room at a time. This book is quite inspiring. I will refer to it often as a reference book.
Wow! One Great Book for ADD and ADHD.......2007-06-08
This book should be on the top of the list for anyone who has ADD or works or lives with someone with ADD.
Using ADD and ADHD to get further ahead along with great ideas to fashion a successful life is a great message and I am so glad that it is finally been written in a book that is easy to follow.
This book does not waste too much time telling the ADD person why they can't do things but how to do them, and in many cases how to do them better using your ADD to your advantage.
º For the person with ADD you will walk away with a much better understanding of yourself.
º For frustrated spouses and parents it will help relieve that frustration and allow them to help the ADD person in their life be more successful.
If you only read one book on this subject this should be it.
ADD-Friendly.......2007-06-01
Amazing book with really great ideas! I love this author Kathleen Nadeau, everything I've read of hers is helpful. And the large print is great too!

excellent gift for new (and old) cooks.......2007-01-14
I use this book in my household extensively and have since it came out. I also use this book in my private practice to teach my patients how to cook healthy. There is a section on how to buy meats, cheeses etc and why using whole grains and lean meats is a better option than processed, high fat versions. I use Sandra's recipes for patients suffering from diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, high cholesterol and for weight loss. There are 600 recipes so it does not become boring. The best part is that once you realize just how simple healthful cooking can be, you can adapt your favorite recipes using Sandra's tips. I say, give this book to a son or daughter moving off to college, or to a newlywed couple, then get a copy for yourself. If you love pizza, lasagna, meatloaf, hamburgers and fries, stroganoff and fettucine alfredo, you need to buy this book.
Stellar Cookbook.......2006-09-06
I have owned this cookbook for years and, regardless of what new cookbook I buy, I always find myself coming back to these easy, healthy, and delicious recipes. The ingredients are readily available; instructions are clear and thorough. My family, even my husband, is particularly fond of the "new" versions of classic dishes (e.g. beef stroganoff, macaroni and cheese) as well as the innovative recipes. I've regularly given this book for wedding showers and house warmings. It is definitely a worthwhile purchase.
Excellent book.......2004-09-08
This book makes more sense than anything I have read in a long time, and I have read just about every low-carb book there is. It adds a new perspective
by tying everything together. The first part describes the theory and science behind all low-carb diets and does a superb job of clarifying the differences between low-carb and reduced-carb diets. There is also an excellent discussion of good carbs and the glycemic index. The "choose how you want to lose" approach with the accompanying menus is both practical and useful. Chapters on stocking the pantry and dining out are outstanding. There are also lots of recipes that are easy, really good, and do not require a lot of exotic or expensive ingredients. All in all, this is a first rate guide to lower-carb living.
The whole office can't be wrong!.......2003-05-23
Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.
Lowfat and healthy recipes that are easy and taste great.......2003-04-12
This cookbook is great! There are some traditional dishes that have been revamped so they are still flavorful, but lower in fat. The recipes are very easy to make with ingredients that can be found almost anywhere. I have substituted ingredients(like another reviewer), and the results have still been incredible. I have made several recipes including the Pasta with Scallops in Creamy Tomato Sauce, The Pasta with Shrimp Florentine, and a few of the muffin recipes. Everything has turned out very well so far. I am delighted, my husband is delighted, and most likely you will be as well.

Apsolute Waste of Money.......2005-10-23
What a waste of money. You'd better of reading an article or an expert advise on the Internet than reading the entire book. Which adds to my frustration is the extra cost I encountered on shipping the book internationally.
It has absolutely neither a meaningful new peace of information nor a serious know how.

Inspiring and beautiful creations.......2000-06-30
Poring over the illustrations of Korean costumes and wrapping cloths from the Choson dynasty was a pleasure for me. The photographs beautifully captured not only the colours and forms of the creations, but the sheen and texture of the materials. I liked the design of the layout and the typeography. Before the collection of illustrations there are brief essays about Korean costumes and wrapping cloths in this period. Taking care of silkworms, spinning thread, weaving cloth, sewing and embroidery were all women's tasks. In the strict Confucian era women were discouraged from any type of intellectual pursuit. By developing textiles and designs these women were able to experience the joy of creation. Their exuberance is contagious.
Book Description
To grow up as a Mexican-American Methodist in a small town in south central Texas in the 1940s and 1950s was to be a minority within a minority. This account of a boyhood in Seguin, Texas, broadens our understanding of Latino culture by evoking a time when Catholics and Protestants had nothing to do with each other and the word Chicano was not yet in use. But in spite of ethnic and religious segregation, the Maldonado family and their neighbors flourished in the rich Mejicano culture of their barrio west of Guadalupe Street, a world totally separate from the Anglo world. The language spoken in schools, churches, restaurants, bars, and beauty parlors was predominantly Spanish. The sounds and smells were Mexican. School teachers were the most successful and respected members of the community.
Guadalupe Street separated Protestant families like the Maldonados from the Anglo and Catholic communities. But it did not keep them from attaining success in the Anglo world. David Maldonado's memoir of how he crossed Guadalupe Street is the story of a man who became bilingual, bicultural, and successful, but it is also a tribute to the traditions in which he grew up.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating writing, wonderful telling of the memoir!.......2006-06-07
For anyone who reads a memoir, regardless of the nationality and culture, somehow, your own memories are triggered. A good memoir can take the reader back to our own childhood places of memorable people and rewarding or unpleasant experiences, simply because we, as humans, can connect at some time with the author.
Crossing Guadalupe Street is the story of David Maldonado Jr, who at the time of printing, 2001, was the President of the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. The book focuses on his life growing up in the 40s and 50s, Hispanic and Protestant, and Guadalupe Street was the social and economic separator in a small town, Seguin, Texas. In his early formative years, his whole world was his family and the Protestant church in a Catholic barrio.
Maldonado writes with clear sentiment, visual imagery enhanced by sounds and smells of Mexico and the small town. There is no misunderstanding how he felt. The paragraph structure is descriptive, and he sums each paragraph up beautifully. If he provides the Mexican word and an English description. His memories are so vivid that you will embark on your own personal journey.
Chapters are set up to tell us about his roots in the town, beloved family members, influences, the small house, the schools, picking cotton, working in the department store with Jews, and Latinos and Protestants, and other memorable characters. He shares with the reader, Guadalupe Street, the socio and economic separator, and of crossing it to another world, the anglo world.
But most important, you will learn about the prominent division in town between the Hispanic Protestant and Hispanic Catholics, criticisms and beliefs of one another. This was very insightful without being invasive.
Maldonado shares his successes and this is a tribute to the traditions.
This is a wonderful book!!......MzRizz
Crossing Guafdalupe Street by David Maldonado.......2004-04-20
Crossing Guadalupe Street by David Maldonado takes place during the 1940s. The setting story takes place in a small town of Mexico called Seguin. The nivel is about the authored chilhood memories. The story is about avid Maldonado, his family, things he had been through and seen and so much more. One of the reasons why I enjoyed this novel is because we call all relate ti it when it comes to family and memories. It was so easy to pictured the setting because of the way the way the author describes the place or situationalso with specific details and examples. His family plays an important role in his life qalso the place where he was born and raised. Growing up were he came from describe his personality and "Who I am" "Seguin". IT gave me the impression that although he was poor and his family may have went through struggles and sacrifices, somehow he felted the richest and luckiest guy of earth because of his loving, caring and united family he had. My rating for this novel I give five stars. I recommend this novel because I truely believe that is very informative and inspiring. The author leaves you with curiosity on what's going to happen next.
crossing Guadalupe Street review.......2004-04-20
"Crossing Guadalupe Street" is a story that took place in a small town in South Central Texas called Seguin in the 1940s and 1950s. The author David Maldonado tells the story of his childhood, growing up in Seguin and how it was segregated. This book is about a family of seven children and how they were molded by their parents'ethnic and religious path. There was a big cultural barrio in Seguin and on the other side of Guadalupe Street, was a whole other world and the only time or place these two worlds would come together was at school. The rating that i give to this book is a four stars. I recommend this novel to all ages because it give you and idea of how a family should be.
Review of Crossing Guadalupe Street.......2004-04-20
Crossing Guadalupe Street takes place during 1940 in a small town of Mexico called Seguin. The novel talks about the author's childhood memories. The story is about David Maldonado it also talks about his family and there adventures. The reason why I liked this novel was because it is about families and memories that we can all make with each other. When you first start reading you can actually picture what is going on is like you can see what is happening and you can also predict what is going to happen next. The novel also makes you want to read more and more it is so interesting. This novel gave me the impression that the author did love and care very much about his family. If I was to rate this novel I would give it **** stars because is that good. I would recommend that people read this novel because it chouse you how much your family should mean to you and it helps you to appreciate them more.
