5 out of 5 stars Such vivid descriptions that you cannot read it in one go.......2005-08-09

A corpse is found on a hill in the outskirts of Reykjavik. It looks like it has already been there for a long time, but the excavation goes terribly slow because a team of archaeologists is carrying out the work. In the meantime inspector Erlendur and his colleagues try to get a picture of what happened 50 to 70 years ago. Slowly but surely they find out the awful truth. In between the story line of the investigation, there is another storyline about a family consisting of a father, mother, 2 brothers and a handicapped sister. It soon becomes apparent that something horrible happened in the family and this is written down so vividly that I had to put down the book a few times because it nearly became too much. An in the meantime Erlendur's drugs-addicted daughter Eva Lind is in a coma and he finally finds the courage to tell her what he feels for her. In short, this is a wonderful, sensitive thriller with a lot of psychological insight, well-developed storylines and beautiful descriptions of the various characters.

      Book Description

A comprehensive guide to the Chinese art of healing with food

      • Provides more than 300 authentic Chinese recipes for curing specific ailments and for promoting happiness and vitality

      • Explains the theories behind traditional Chinese beliefs about health and diet and reconciles these beliefs with contemporary Western medical knowledge

      • Includes a complete fitness program centered on the popular Chinese qi gong exercises

Through 5,000 years of recorded history the Chinese have developed an unequaled pharmacopoeia of food remedies and have turned this knowledge into a delicious cuisine that is simple to prepare. This cuisine has little in common with the dishes on the menus of many Chinese restaurants--which have sacrificed traditional Chinese principles to appeal to high-fat Western tastes. Instead, it emphasizes all-natural ingredients eaten in season and in the most beneficial combinations.

The Healing Cuisine of China features more than 300 authentic Chinese recipes, ranging from simple preparations to cure specific ailments to traditional "longevity banquets." The authors also explain the underlying theories behind traditional Chinese beliefs about health and reconcile these ancient beliefs with Western medical knowledge about bacteria, viruses, and other causes of disease. A complete fitness program, centered on the popular Chinese qi gong exercises, and a questionnaire to help readers discover their individual body requirements make this the most comprehensive guide to the healthy lifestyle of China ever published.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting buy not organized very well........2002-02-20

This makes an interesting reference book on medicinal recipes. I just don't like the way it is organized. You have to thumb through the whole book to get a feel for what ailments it addresses and I found the list somewhat wanting. Other than that, it makes an interesting compendium of Chinese remedies although I think I'll pass on the fried and ground earthworms!

5 out of 5 stars As Informative As It Is Useful.......1999-06-24

The Healing Cuisine of China by Zhuo Zhao and George Ellis is an excellent book! It is not a typical health food book. The book not only teaches you how to prepare healthy food; it teaches you how to prepare healthy food that tastes good! Also, there are many tidbits about Chinese culture and medicine in this book. So, you learn as you cook! Truly, this book has something for everyone, whether you are a fitness fanatic or simply one who likes good food.

5 out of 5 stars A Door to The Pleasure of Eating and Feeling Great.......1999-02-09

One unique feature about Zhuo Zhao and George Ellis's new book--The Healing Cuisine of China--is that it includes real recipes from China, a country people regard food as heaven. Growing up in China, Zhao took for granted how the Chinese in everyday life treat their minor ailments, improve their general health or beautify themselves by choosing to eat specific foods. Living in the west made her realize how little people in this part of the world knew about another beauty of the Chinese cusine--it is supposed to improve one's health. The 300 recipes, a result of years of research in China, backed up by real life anecdotes and scientific analyses, open up a door to the pleasure of eating, and feeling great, not only while eating, but also in the future.

      Book Description

A week-by-week practical guide to setting up and maintaining a superb living environment

As fishkeeping continues to grow in popularity, hobbyists are looking for authoritative advice and more sophisticated results.

Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week-by-Week is an encyclopedic reference that takes a fresh look at setting up and maintaining a tropical freshwater aquarium. New hobbyists are quite often impatient to set up their aquarium and want to add their expensive fish as soon as possible. This common misstep can have disastrous results that may discourage beginners from ever trying again.

To curb such enthusiastic impatience, this book presents clear step-by-step practical advice in a convenient week-by-week progression. The book uses detailed photographic sequences to follow each stage of setting up a warm water freshwater tropical aquarium in real-time over a period of ten weeks.

The set-up procedure starts with the first day, when the substrate and life-support systems are installed and progresses to the point at which the first fish are added - two weeks later. The book then follows the aquarium's development during the next eight weeks as the tank turns from an artificial environment into a living eco-system.

Alongside the main aquarium set-up sequence are photographs that show how to create two different aquascape designs based on a cube and a bow-front tank.

Profile sections show fifty aquarium plants and one hundred popular warm water freshwater aquarium fish at relevant stages of the set-up process. Throughout, the book explains the natural processes that occur so that fishkeepers can ensure ongoing success.

Combining clear text and simple-to-follow illustrations, Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week-by-Week is a crucial reference for tropical freshwater fish hobbyists.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners.......2005-12-04

This book covers different topics from tank setup to maintenance. It is a well written book with a lots of pictures. Anyone can get a lot of information from internet, however, this book gives the best coverage of planning a beautiful planted aquarium step by step. I wish that I could read this before I bought my starter kit.
While this is a great tool book to own for a beginner, I do wish it can go a little bit deeper on some of topics.

5 out of 5 stars Lighting systems, cleaning and filtering systems, fish choice and feeding plants.......2005-10-12

There are plenty of books on the market which discuss the home tropical aquarium, from choosing fish to maintenance: so what makes Stuart Thraves' Setting Up A Tropical Aquarium Week By Week so special? It's his weekly focus on the project, from day one to week 12, which offers step-by-step clear instructions on how to correctly set up a tropical freshwater aquarium. Lighting systems, cleaning and filtering systems, fish choice and feeding plants: all are given photo embellishments and very clear direction.

5 out of 5 stars THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read........2005-03-31

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Beginners Guide.......2004-12-07

Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.
This is a great gift for anyone who has or wants to get a fish tank.

4 out of 5 stars Raymond Peynet's lithographs are enjoyable to look through........1998-10-01

Peynet's Collections is a very interesting book. I actually had no idea that there were so many things made after "The Lovers". The only thing I was disappointed in was that I had hoped for more larger pictures of the lithographs instead of 4 to a page. It seemed most of the book was dedicated to pottery instead of his actual art. However, the book was very enjoyable and colorful and has found a home as a coffee table book.

          Book Description

The New York City loft has become a tradition. It is possible to look back at the evolution of the loft as an architectural type that has influenced the whole concept of the New York apartment dwelling, particularly the nature of its space. Large areas of urban blocks containing a huge variety of warehousing have been transformed by innovative design, providing the pattern for the architectural Manhattan loft. The central discipline of the Manhattan loft lies in the handling of space and material elements, the common theme being openness This book presents a critical review of ten architects' work. The lofts reveal a developing modernity - based on a flexible spatial content - which is not about fashion, but is instead concerned with a sense of rooted settlement and the restorative values of ordered space and light within the basic structure of a personal retreat. At first sight these lofts are all very different; some are minimalist, others more opulent and sophisticated. But what is common throughout is that they have been conceived within the pluralistic framework of the modern architectural tradition.

                  Book Description

The Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist for the Chicago Tribune presents a series of essays examining the central questions of race, gender, and ethnic identity that have emerged since the civil rights reforms of the mid-1960s. The essays address such topics as how racism still acts to keep nonwhites in subordinate political, economic, and social status; how the hip-hop generation has turned -black is beautiful' on its head; and the volatile relationship between blacks and Jews. Page reflects on changes in the racial landscape since the 1960s and reconnects the increasingly abstract political debates about black conservatives, affirmative action, and the race card to the people for whom these words mean something more than just votes.

1 out of 5 stars Read "The Race Card" for balance!.......2007-07-03

"The Race Card" is a collection of essays originally published in Heterodoxy magazine and edited by Peter Collier and David Horowitz. The chapter based on this book ("Clarence Page's Race Problem, and Mine" by Horowitz) is an excellent dissection of Page's book and a must-read to put proper perspective on the recent race hysteria.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Thoughtful .......2007-02-04

This is a thoughtful look at racial realities in the USA. Author Clarence Page correctly examines racial divides as perplexing and multi-dimensional, while avoiding pandering and one-sided attacks. Page examines such hot-button subjects as victim-hood, affirmative action, middle-class values, relations between Jews and blacks, the widespread fear of young black males (which Page admits to), and the failure of many African Americans to grasp increased opportunities. Readers may not always agree with the author, but they can learn from him. I wish he'd gone further and focused more on Latino's and Asians, regional differences, plus hostilities between native and Caribbeans. Still, this is a welcome improvement over the many offensive "blame whitey" (or "blame blackie") treatises that prove so counter-productive.

Clarence Page is a Pulitzer-winning journalist for the Chicago Tribune blessed with an easy-reading style. He's written a serious and thoughtful book about our racial divide, one that makes it seem a little less insoluble.

5 out of 5 stars america is not a melting pot but a mulligan's stew !.......2001-03-28

what i loved about clarence page's book is it's very readable. i read it in 2 days and was able to grasp the concepts that he put forth in his tome. race is a subject that has baffled blacks and whites for ages; even our most intellectual peers are dumbfounded about how to confront this hydra. page shows us that by confronting race,we can get past race : we can begin to establish a dialogue between each other. page calls for blacks to get out of the "victim " mentality and take advantage of the opportunities available to african-americans. he also encourages blacks to build themselves up intellectualy and use their intellectual talents to survive in america. page then tells whites that they must get beyond their fear of black people and learn more about them and their culture and also be eager to embrace multiculturalism as a start to overcoming racial woes. the book is flawless ! what really startled me was page stated that in present-day america, most ethnic groups have begun to segregate themselves; blacks, primarily because they are tired of learning about whites and trying to relate to them in order or survive ( it has never been vice versa ! )and whites, because they are tired of defending themselves as not being " racist. " i have always been a cosmopolitan person, willing to learn from any culture and to love people simply as people. judging by the number of reviews of this book, i doubt if a lot of people will ever read it or take page's advice. it did my heart and mind good to discover it.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading; very real; very informative........1999-09-13

Found book to be very enlightening and imformative; easy to read, understand, and relate to. Says what needs to be heard; unfornately many who need to hear aren't listening.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every white person in America!.......1999-08-31

Clarence Paige is a voice of wisdom in a discussion often dominated by the most strident, offensive voices. He pulls no punches about what race means in America, yet he offers hope. I plan to buy multiple copies to give to all of my friends, black and white, who often seem baffled or hopeless about the future of race relations in this country.
