Skeletons in the Canyon and in the Closet!.......2005-04-15
This is another great book in the Joanna Brady series by J.A. Jance. This time she throws a little romance into the mix of things as Brianna O'Brien is found murdered and her Hispanic boyfriend is the main suspect for some, while others don't believe he could kill. This teenage girl had many secrets and her boyfriend was only one of them. While investigating this crime, everyone's favorite female sheriff, Joanna Brady, uncovers more than she bargained for and has a difficult time in dealing with some of it.
Again, we see some of the cast of support characters return, but others are mentioned in passing, so we know they will be back in future tomes. We're given a little glimpse of what's in store for Joanna Brady with her daughter growing up quickly and her mother's new relationship that seems to have transposed some of the former anger and has made her almost approachable.
I find it interesting that Jance not only tells a wonderful story, but throws in a moral issue as well. She deals with the topic of racism in this book and does so in a very civilized way showing the prejudices of some and the extremes they will go to continue that narrow-mindedness. However, she also gives us hope for the future. She shows us that no matter what the odds some will not follow in their parents' beliefs and will, instead, have friends based on things other than the color of skin or social standing.
And along with the story line and moral issue, you can always rely on Jance to paint a mental picture of the Arizona desert at it's best. Having lived in Arizona, I can remember the millions of stars in the sky that Jance describes in detail. I can remember the rugged beauty of the various wilderness areas that are similar to those portrayed. No one gives a better mental image of these things than Jance does. Having read all of the books in this series, I feel like I've actually been to Bisbee, Arizona. I'm sure if I ever do get the chance to visit that town; I'll see things as I've seen them before in my mind while reading these novels.
After reading the first book in the Joanna Brady series, I didn't think Jance would be able to keep up with the standard she set. I was very mistaken. She has not only achieved that level of excellence but has surpassed it and continues to set new standards with each new book she writes.
I highly recommend not only SKELETON CANYON, but any and all books in this series. They're wonderful, exciting and highly addicting! I do suggest that you read them in order to get the background on the characters - it's not mandatory, but will make for a more enjoyable read and will let your imagination run wild with possible scenarios for the future!
NICE ENTERTAINING READ.......2005-02-14
I enjoyed this one. Like other Jance books, this one takes place in the Southwest. Ms. Jance is a very descriptive writer, i.e. the land and the people, and a good story teller. The book is an easy read and like I said, it entertains, what any good book should do. This is the first of this particular series I have read and will certainly seek out and read the rest. There wer a couple of part I felt moved a bit slow, but even these were rather "homey" and quite enjoyable. All in all recommend this one.

Joanna Brady is the no-nonsense sheriff of a border town in Arizona, and she is thoroughly delightful in this story of murder in the treacherous canyons near the Mexican border.
The recently widowed mother of a 10-year-old girl, Joanna cannot help but be moved by the vicious murder of Brianna O'Brien, the beautiful and popular daughter of the town's most prominent family. The reader, too, is drawn into Brianna's all-too-brief life, and is there with her in Skeleton Canyon as she joyously awaits the arrival of her secret lover, Ignacio Ybarra, equally young, beautiful, and deeply in love. Brianna does not live to meet her lover--but who killed her? And why? It's up to Joanna to find out, and her job is much hampered by the arrogance of Brianna's father, whose distrust of the local law enforcement community is matched only by his racial hatred of Mexican-Americans.
Brianna and Ignacio were involved in a forbidden love affair, at least by the senior O'Brian's lights. Did he find out and have his own daughter killed? It seems highly unlikely, since Ignacio is very much alive--and a suspect. But why would he murder his beloved? What secrets in the O'Brian family coalesced to cause this inevitable tragedy?
While Joanna and her crew struggle to find the answers, the reader is treated to magnificent descriptions of the rugged Southwest, whose beauty masks murderous dangers such as killer flash floods. Equally interesting is the supporting cast: Joanna's friend Angie, a former hooker turned straight; two old and entertaining drunks in the bar where Angie works; Joanna's indomitable mother, who has a secret of her own; and more.
This is the 5th in the Joanna Brady series, and the first I have read. It stands alone beautifully, but got me so hooked that I must get my hands on the next book immediately! Highly recommended for mystery lovers looking for a good, strong, read.
Best Joanna Brady Yet!.......2002-04-16
I believe I have read all of the Joanna Brady novels by J.A. Jance, and to me, this was the best one yet. The young love theme permeates the whole story, though there are other factors at work here. Mystery surrounds Brianna's family more than it does her in particular, as you know what happens with her and Ignacio fairly early in the story, but it is clear that things are not what they seem with her wealthy family. It almost seems that we have two stories in one here, but in the end, they do get tied together neatly. With each novel, we learn more about Joanna, and of course, if you have read some of the later novels before you read this one, as I did, you already know how some of the plotlines in this book pertaining to Joanna and her friend Marianne Meculyea develops, though they aren't played out fully in this particular story. I am not going to say more because I don't like to give away too much of the story, it will ruin it for readers who have yet to read this one, but trust me, you won't be disappointed!

To put this review into perspective for you, it is written by a serious student of cooking that has been actively studying food on their own for 25 years. I have been focusing on Italian food for the last 10 years. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America.
This book is laid out as follows:

The book is geared to the professional kitchen. However, there is much information in this book for the home cook beyond the recipes. Many of the same considerations that the restaurant must address should be part of the menu development in the home.
If you are looking for ways to improve the "health quotient" of the meals you prepare your family, you will enjoy this book. All the recipes in this book have complete nutrition stats including: calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, sugar, and protein.
The book does a nice job of explaining smoking and the flavors given to foods by various wood chips. Their recipe for oven-smoked tomatoes (without purchasing a separate smoker, I used a heavy lidded roaster) was extremely easy to follow and turned out wonderfully.
The recipe section is more than 2/3's of the book. The recipes are developed for larger quantities than most home cooks will prepare. I have not had any difficulty reducing the size of the recipes to accomodate my family. The recipe for Risotto Cakes and Green Beans with Chanterelles was fabulous, as was the one for Chianti Granita. The recipe for pasta that uses only egg whites is also very nice, and versatile. Of the recipes that I have prepared so far, all of them have been very good.
I consider this book to be a valuable addition to my cookbook library. If you want to cook more healthfully, you will enjoy this book.

I love this book. I am an vegetarian and looking for this type of book for a long time. I am studying to become a chef, but want to do healthy cooking. I want to study baking also, so I purchased the Study Guide for Baking and Advanced Baking by P. Leonardi, which has the type of questions that will help you especially since I am not the greatest baker. The Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations is also extremely helpful in and out of the kitchen.

Each topic is fully discussed, and a full set of appendices offers quick access to a variety of nutritional and food prep tables. Recipes included in the book prepare large volumes of food in most cases, but they provide good general guidelines, cooking techniques and ideas for the creative cook. First rate photography illustrates the versatility of a healthy diet and adds considerably to the volume's visual appeal. As a breeder and exhibitor of this fine breed. I recomend this book to all perspective westie owners. What a better way to explain what a versital dog this little breed can be. From therapy dogs right on to working in the feild, Ms. Martin does a great job letting the informed buyer be aware of all the attributes this breed can bring to any home.

First time and old time owners alike will love this book. It gives a wonderful overview of the West Highland White Terrier. It includes good puppy selection and training tips as well as breed health care, grooming, and temperment information. We particularly like her coverage of the breed's versatile involvement in canine activities such as agility and tracking. It is also a good book for people who are trying to decide if a Westie is right for them. We recommend Ms. Martin's book to everyone who obtains a Westie from us.

This is truly a book that deserves a 5 star rating! The Woodfinishing Book covers every coating material you can imagine. With the in-depth details, you can learn so much. I really believe it's a must-have book for your workshop.
The book does a great job of outlining all of the finish materials available, both old time favorites and the latest break-throughs. Personally, I've found descriptions of the old time methods the most interesting.
The author does a great job describing "why things work" as well as "how to make things work." It's a comprehensive collection of wonderful information in a single source. Who would have thought someone could write over 200 pages on this subject?
As a long time reader of Fine Woodworking magazine, I've learned that their published books are well-written and useful. The Woodfinishing Book is another great addition to their collection.

He's done art work for Black Flag, Sonic Youth, and the Minutemen. His artwork looks at the social and political confusion of life. Pettibon's artwork consist of somewhat viloent imagery but with a twist of humor. Anyone that has a since of humor will love Pettibon's artwork.
The Best Pettibon Book Yet.......2000-12-29
A few years ago, Quimby's books in Chicago had a whole bunch of these little digest-sized, xerox-produced, hand stapled booklets by Raymond Pettibon. I never bought any, and always regretted it. Some savvy art-speculator probably snatched up the whole lot. They were selling them for a dollar or two each, and now they go for hundreds on the market. They were personally handmade by the great Pettibon himself, and thus qualified as actual Pettibon original artworks. Anyway, I missed my chance to get any of these--not necessarily to profit from them, just to, y'know, have 'em--but here is your chance(I've already got it) to have a near-complete collection. The books are presented actual size (approx. 8.5"x5.5"), arranged chronologically, each issue complete with front and back covers, and a detailed bibliography at the end. Aging punkers will probably recognize some of this stuff from their SST record covers and gig flyers, but there's alot of stuff I had never seen before. Truly, truly great.
