Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Holden Carver continues to work his way up the ranks of the criminal organisation headed by Tao, a man more complex than is seen at first glance.
More problems happen for Holden as his relationship with the twisted minion of Tao, Miss Misery gets more and more involved.
As good as Book 1.......2005-11-06
This book continues the excellent story from Book 1 and left me eagerly anticipating Book 3.
One of the best graphic novels out there.......2005-10-18
People go on and on about how great this series is, and the good news is, it completely lives up to the hype. I came to "Sleeper" after reading a few other titles Ed Brubaker had written, notably DC's deliciously revamped "Catwoman" (which is also a lot of fun)... I was skeptical, but I'm glad I took the plunge with "Sleeper," as it is one of the best comicbook stories I've read in a long while.
The action takes place in the WildCATS/Authority/Stormwatch universe, once a comicbook backwater that has recently been revitalized into a gritty and witty superhero noir... "Sleeper" tells the story of a superpowered secret agent, Holden Carver, who is placed undercover by a Machiavellian Nick Fury type to infiltrate a sinister spy network populated with superpowered, super-amoral bad guys. Brubaker uses the character's specific superpowers to flesh out their inner lives -- Carver's power is the ability to absorb any amount of bodily damage and transmute it into pure pain, which he can zap other people with. Meanwhile, he feels no pain himself and is practically unkillable, a situation that leaves him feeling dead inside and increasingly alienated from the true-believer idealism that lead him into military service to begin with. Brubaker borrows from the well-trod genre of spy fiction, but adds an extra layer with the whole superpower thing that is well thought-out and rewarding. Without getting into spoilers, etc., I'll just say that this was one of those rare comic series that I regretted getting to the end of... the world it depicted was so absorbing and textured that I was bummed I knew the story would end with Volume 4... (The entire "Sleeper" story is contained in four slim volumes, plus the prequel, "Point Blank," which sets the stage for "Sleeper" and should definitely be read as well...)
It should be mentioned that this is not a book for little kids: there are many of the same sort of "adult" elements as DC's Vertigo imprint -- semi-graphic sexuality and some extreme violence -- although to his credit, Brubaker includes these elements for a reason, and does it with far less of the "gee-whiz" gratuitousness that has made the Vertigo books become so tedious and repetitive. The sex elements cut to the heart of Carver's character, while the violence is used to show the seriousness of his predicament; they actually deepen the story and move it along and are not included merely to titillate readers or gross us out. That being said, I highly recommend this series.

Vol. 2 of the Best Comic You're Not Reading.......2004-08-25
Here's what happened when I read Volume One, Out in the Cold: I couldn't put it down. I bought it at my local comic book shop. The store closes at 8 pm and by 7:30 pm (on the same night I bought it), I was calling the shop...
RING RING
DOUG: Hello, Funnybook Factory.
AMY: Tom?
DOUG: No, this is Doug.
AMY: Oh, hi Doug. It's Amy.
DOUG: Hey Amy.
AMY: When you and Tom come over to play Halo later, can you tell Tom to bring volume two of Sleeper. I'll pay him when he gets here.
DOUG: Sure.
AMY: ... Don't forget to tell him, okay? Bring volume two.
DOUG: Okay.
AMY: I got the money here. If he forgets, I'll kill him. I'll KILL him.
DOUG: Jesus, all right. He'll bring it.
AMY: Okay, thanks. Bye.
Yeah, it's that good.

Boring.......2005-06-06
Alex's artwork is phenomenal as always, but this has to be the most boring comic book ever written. The story involves Wonder Woman wondering how she could be more effective in her task here on earth as an ambassador of peace. While she's doing this you get to look at some paintings by Alex Ross. The End.
Open your eyes to the "Truth".......2003-10-24
This being the last of the series of individual heroes (the Justice League project still upcoming) is I think the best artwork by Alex Ross, as he and Paul Dini have really gotten on the same page so to speak on framing and individual panels. The story continues with the humanization of the most well known of DC's heroes (Supe's, Batman, Capt. Marvel, and Wonder Woman) with Wonder Woman, then as Diana Prince trying to connect with the humans of the "man's world".
As Amazon Ambassador to the Patriarchs World, Diana's mission is to spread the Amazon tenent of peace. However being renowed as a nearly perfect goddess on Earth sometimes doesn't help her as much as hinder her. Wonder Woman can toss tanks, deflect bullets, take down dozens of terrorists with ease but in some cases she cannot speak with normal people because they happen to be intimiadated by her. This story is Diana Prince's "quest" to try and change this and see the truth of the world, not as a goddess above, but as a mortal on Earth.
Of course... that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Where Wonder Woman makes political statements.......2003-01-26
These are the features of the book which any reader would find interesting:
(1) Wonder Woman, through her actions, makes some political statements. In the first part of the book, she is an antidisestablishmentarianist: she saves a Third World government from being overthrown by a military coup. This reminds me so much of my country, the Philippines.
In the middle part of the book, Wonder Woman shows her pro-democracy stance: she saves an Asian-looking woman from being run down by a military tank. This brings to mind the violence on Tiananmen Square in Communist China during the late 80s.
In the last part of the book, Wonder Woman terrorizes the terrorists: she saves some Middle-eastern women from being used as human shields. The women are wearing burquas, a dress code strictly prescribed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
(2) This Wonder Woman is a composite of different WW versions. Dr. William Marston's contributions are evident in WW's seeming need to use an invisible plane and the Amazons' riding kangas on Paradise Island. Lynda Carter's presence as a bespectacled Diana Prince is obvious (where WW leaps high and through a window is also reminiscent of Carter's bionic stunts on TV). George Perez's revamped WW costume and "womanly muscles" were the ever-present guide for Alex Ross's version. Although Ross used Marston's Queen Hippolyta in a number of pages, there's one page where you could see Perez's Hippolyta in her purple robes. A certain dark-skinned Amazon must be Philippus, a Perez invention to make the Amazons multi-ethnic, not just a race of white women-warriors.
Since Ross had made this WW rather "flightless," I wish he had used the Wonderdome/Lansinarian technology. WW would have looked fantastic and more mythological riding a winged chariot (shown lately in the regular WW comics). Nevertheless, this work is still perfect.
Stunning! A comic lover's delight!.......2002-11-20
Breathtaking artwork with a compelling story reminiscent and worthy of the golden age Wonder Woman, this oversized "graphic novel" is a real treat for fans and new readers alike. Satisfies lovers of both the traditional comic character and Lynda Carter-lovers.
Being a demi-goddess isn't easy...........2002-11-03
This is the fourth of the excellent oversized format Alex Ross/ Paul Dini collaborations. Personally, while I liked this one too, I would probably rank it after the Superman, Captain Marvel, and Batman books. Don't get me wrong, it is an excellent read- and the quality of the artwork is magnificent. There is just something better about the other three books.
I think the problem may be the one that the Amazon Princess herself faces in the storyline- she is just too darn perfect- and it intimidates people. After all, this is a perfect demi-goddess created out of the earth of Themyscira itself by the power of the gods. She is inhumanly perfect because, technically, she is not quite human. She is an Ideal made flesh- and that can be hard to identify with. Indeed, over and over, her shere power and presence overwhelms those she is helping as much as the bad guys- especially if they come from cultures that repress and dominate women. That's a hard character to infuse with the simple humanity of the other books....
As with the other three books, the original art work of this one was auctioned off for charity (this time it was for the victims of 9-11 and their families.)

When Mehmet Oz or any of New York's leading doctors has a patient whose life depends on losing weight, they call on Joel Fuhrman, M.D. In EAT TO LIVE, Dr. Fuhrman offers his healthy, effective, and scientifically proven plan for shedding radical amounts of weight quickly, and keeping it off.Losing weight under Dr. Fuhrman's plan is not about willpower, it is about knowledge. The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula Health=Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman's patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, EAT TO LIVE works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. No willpower required-just knowledge!

Fantastic Book!.......2007-10-03
This book is absolutely the best if you are interested in healthy living!
A fine guide for living a healthier lifestyle........2007-09-30
This book makes a good case for switching to a mainly plant based diet. The premise is that by eating nutrient rich natural foods, primarily green veggies, that you can lose weight and gain better health. The first half of the book seems to be making the case for the diet scientifically then the rest is how to "Eat to Live." I've read a lot of diet books and this one does make the most sense to me. I've just started eating this way for about a week and a half. I've lost 5lbs and feel great.
The only problem with trying to get America on this diet is the price and availability of fresh fruits & vegetables. We don't currently produce enough fruits & vegetables for everyone to get their standard five servings per day.
Eat to Live.......2007-09-29
Dr. Furhman's book is life changing and for the better. I have enjoyed it and am using it as my guide to a better and healthier life style. I have recommended this book to friends and have bought a copy for my sister. I have to thank a friend for telling me about it. Is is changing her life as well and for the better. RP, Greenville, NY
Well it works!.......2007-09-17
After three weeks on this diet, here is what I have noticed: I FEEL GREAT! I have more energy. I have lost 16 lbs in three weeks eating as much (allowed) food as I can tuck in me, and have never been hungry. Food cravings left in a few days. I see my salt addiction abating nicely, but it's not disappeared. I think that eating less salt, lots of fiber and lots of raw food is really pleasant now. I am glad it didn't take long to really get myself on board with this.
It's work, though. It takes time and space. It's worth it to be able to lose so much so fast but safely, but it is work. I do not miss meat at all. I am beginning to appreciate the taste of food. My digestive system is not complaining to me and the overall process from start to finish is aestetically much less unpleasant in every way (ya get my drift?).
I don't bother with things if they don't work and work well. I am staying on this because I want to. Suggestion: just pretend that no meat is not a big deal and go for it. You'll be surprised how much of that "I need meat" is just programmed into you and it doesn't really matter as much as you think it will.
The hardest part was the first day. After the third day it was very easy. I found that I can cheat once a week or so and it doesn't matter, but I don't like the effect it has on me. You can see for yourself how this is for you.
I recommend this book and lifestyle to anyone who wants to see results and that includes the hope that it is a lifestyle that can be maintained.
I don't want to become a wierdo though -- people who are obsessed with their diets are annoying to me. If I start talking about this incessantly, somebody stick a cream puff in my mouth to shut me up.
But I am impressed with how well my body has responded to it.
Makes sense.......2007-09-16
My wife and I plan to incorporate some of Dr Furhman's recommendations.
The idea of eating mostly nutrient-rich food makes sense.
The book is well written with reference sources and a bibliography.
Book Description
Nourish body and soul with simple, delicious food from Japan's temples.
The Enlightened Kitchen introduces readers to shojin ryori, the traditional vegetarian cooking of Japan's Buddhist temples. Shojin food, with its emphasis on fresh, seasonal vegetables, staples such as seaweed, grains and tofu, and natural flavorings rather than chemical additives, is a highly
nutritious and delicious alternative to the many unhealthy eating habits of Western society. In addition to its health benefits, the preparation and eating of shojin food in Buddhist temples has great spiritual significance. After spending their days in rigorous selfdiscipline, the monks welcome
mealtimes as a soothing respite, both for those preparing the food with loving care and for those eating it with
relaxed enjoyment.
Stunning color photographs accompany more than sixty recipes for soups, salads, tofu and bean dishes, vegetables, rice and desserts. The author, Mari Fujii, married to a Buddhist monk and an expert in shojin food for more than twenty years, presents an array of recipes including: Carrot and Mushroom
Soymilk Soup, Steamed Pumpkin and Tofu, Beans and Eggplant with Sesame Dressing, Ginger Rice and Banana Tempura. Her step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, and she has made an effort to use ingredients that are readily available in most good supermarkets. Fujii includes a guide to basic
cooking techniques used in the preparation of shojin food, an extensive glossary of ingredients and equipment, and fascinating background information on the history and philosophy of shojin ryori. Perfect for vegans, vegetarians and anyone interested in healthful eating, the dishes from The
Enlightened Kitchen will warm our hearts, sustain our souls, and fortify us inside and out.

Pour the spirit of heaven and earth into every dish.......2006-06-18
Buddhism being a religion of reincarnation, one of the precepts of cloistered monks is to harm "nothing that flees when chased." After all, that might just be your brother or wife from a past life sizzling in your cookpot. However, even those pursuing enlightenment must eat, and even monks like their food to be varied and tasty, so the spiritually pure tradition of "Shojin Ryori" was born.
Shojin Ryori is a vegan cuisine still served today in the temples of Japan, based on seasonal vegetables that can be grown by the monks. Eating food that follows the flow of nature is considered best for the body and soul, and seasoning is kept light so that the natural flavor of the fresh vegetables can be preserved.
Author Mari Fujii learned the arts of shojin ryori from her husband Sotetsu, who was the Tenzo, or temple cook, during his ten years as a monk. Now a priest at a temple in Kamakura, Sotetsu and Fujii teach shojin ryori to all who wish to learn. With "The Enlightened Kitchen," they have brought this wisdom to a wider audience, allowing all to partake of the healthy, natural and delicious style of cooking.
In seven section, including soups, salads, tofu/beans, vegetables, potatoes/rice/grains, and deserts, Fujii has selected easy-to-make dishes using seasonal vegetables that should be easy to find in any grocery store. The recipes are delightfully simple, and you will be amazed that such great food can come from such little effort. She stays with traditional Japanese vegetables, as well as occasionally incorporating rarities such as avocado and celery to mix things up. The base for most of the sauces is sake, miso paste, sesame oil, rice vinegar and lemon. She has substituted maple syrup for mirin, thinking that mirin might be hard to find in the US, but it is easy enough to swap it back. Not all of the recipes are strictly vegan, as Fujii points out that Chinese and Tibetan Shojin Ryori allow for dairy products, although authentic Japanese does not.
Of the dishes I have made, the "Chestnut Tea Rice" was excellent, as were the "Fried Pumpkin with Peanut Sauce," "Tofu Fried with Almonds," "Sweet Potato and Soybeans with Miso/Lemon Sauce" and "Koyadofu Teriyaki." I am looking forward to exploring all of the recipes, and I have no doubt that they will be equally satisfying.
It is said that those who eat Shojin Ryori fell as if a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. In the modern world where so much processed garbage gets shoveled into our bodies, it is a very pleasant feeling to sit down to a meal that is so completely natural.
Beautiful, Delicious, Simple, and Elegant.......2006-03-31
I am lucky enough to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where "shojin" cuisine (Japanese Buddhist temple cuisine) is served to two wonderful restaurants: Cha Ya and Medicine. I often say "I could live on that cuisine," so when I discovered Fujii's cookbook, I was thrilled. The recipes are so simple but divinely delicious - and of course healthful! Many of the recipes call for only 5 or 7 ingredients, some of which may be unfamiliar at first. But, after your first visit to an Asian grocery or even the Asian aisle of your supermarket, you'll be ready to master this cuisine. As a vegan cooking instructor and a lover of this simple but elegant cuisine, I have prepared many of the dishes in this book and recommend each one as highly as the next. The simplicity is amazing, and the flavors are divine. You'll love this book!
A cookbook of the traditional fare that has its roots in Japan's Buddhist temples.......2005-12-15
Written by the wife of a Buddhist monk who has taught temple cuisine for over twenty years, The Enlightened Kitchen: Fresh Vegetable Dishes From The Temples Of Japan is a cookbook of the traditional fare that has its roots in Japan's Buddhist temples. Emphasizing natural and healthy ingredients such as fresh seasonal vegetables, and the staples of grains, and tofu, these creations are simple and elegant delights, delicious without undue extravagance. All recipes are animal-free, making The Enlightened Kitchen especially ideal for vegetarians and vegans. Full-color photographs throughout and straightforward instructions clearly show the reader how to prepare such mouth- watering delicacies as Shiitake Mushrooms Stuffed with Tofu, Sushi Rolls (prepared entirely without fish), Buckwheat Crepes, Kenchin Style Vegetable Soup, and much more. Highly recommended.

Too vague.......2006-05-02
I really expected more. I have more knowledge from just having a couple Oscars in a tank.
A basic introduction, good for the new oscar owner..........2001-09-17
I have owned Oscars for three years, and bought this book for my brother who just bought his first Oscar. It provides a basic overview of fishkeeping and of the personality and problems specifically associated with Oscars. It fails to provide good information on identifying and treating common fish diseases and what fish make good tankmates for Oscars, however.
Nice pictures and some useful information.......2000-08-08
This book is not an excellent source of scientific information on Oscars, but I found it a rather nice and very easy to read. There are a large number of good quality photos and some nice and accurate discussion on Oscars. As a whole this book is a compact infopacket on Oscars with beautiful pictures.
Very Valuable Book for the Oscar Enthusiast!.......1998-07-14
There is a lot of information about wild Oscars, which is very cool, but the best part of the book is about keeping Oscars in an aquarium. The pictures are beautiful and plentiful. I especially enjoyed the section on Oscar Toys.
