"Nabb is formidable."-Houston Post
An elderly woman is found dead in her apartment. The marshal's search for the villains brings him into confrontation with the past, with Jewish refugees from fascism, and with an English expatriate.
Magdalen Nabb was born in Lancashire. She has lived in Florence since 1975.
Customer Reviews:
The Marshall Guarnaccia literate mysteries are a joy.......2006-05-04
I recommend that readers with the same goals as lvkleydorff (see review below) follow his advice and avoid the literate, beautifully written complexities of Ms. Nabb's Marshall in her all too brief series. Our hero plods, rather than walks, understands rather than articulates, and is convinced that he is barely useful to his superiors. He is actually does the detecting, while others are managing the procedural pieces. The plots are well constructed and unfold in a series of gifts to the reader. The Marshall understands the morality that guides the characters, and suggests that character is more of a guide to action than shallower motives. In the Marshall's efforts to understand what he sees, the reader is drawn into the same comtemplations that this middle aged, overweight sensitive and kind man without exposition by the author or exploratory peeks into the Marshall's thoughts. That's writing that is magic. In Some Bitter Taste, each of the victims would have been far happier and avoided their fate had they not lived by the rules laid for them in childhood. The unmentioned lesson seems to be that the current presence of the long past is inescapable, which seems a fact in real life for Florence (the setting) or any country with a long and remembered history. The Marshal, with his solid presence and blinded by the sun (light makes his eyes water), takes in the shadows to discover the true crimes. The atmosphere, point of view and necessary time to have the reader join the world Nabb develops so well is not for readers of thrillers and people who want only a plot to unravel. If you love true mystery, really good books and lovely writing, as well as utterly unconventional heroes, read these books.
Death in Florence.......2005-10-05
The question of how responsible we are for the fates of others occupies the center of this Marshall Guarnaccia tale, set in Florence. When Sara Hirsch comes to the marshall in a state of terrible fear and anxiety because someone has been entering her apartment in her absence, he promises to come to see her. He is prevented from doing so as promptly as he would have liked; the scene in which he finally approaches her building is a masterly rendering of the experience of precognition. Needless to say, he finds her dead. His search for the reason for her death is gradually woven into the resolution of other situations in his territory, including a theft at the palatial home of a wealthy English art collector and the fate of a beautiful, young, and pregnant Albanian prostitute. The Marshal is a very humane man, and very good at his job. It is a pleasure to spend time with him.
solid Italian police procedural.......2003-09-25
Once he handles a couple of other more pressing police matters, Florence Marshall Salvatore Guarnaccia will deal with Signora Sara Hirsch's complaint that someone had entered her apartment. So he goes ahead and deals with an illegal abused, underage Albanian prostitute and a minor robbery at the Villa L'Uliveto. When he arrives at Sara's abode, he regrets his assumption that the breaking and entering was a minor matter for he finds her dead.
Feeling guilty, he makes inquiries into the deceased. He learns she was impoverished, but expects to make fortune when a Monet that the Nazis stole from her family was soon to be returned to her. Allegedly a half-brother possesses the art treasure. However, before he can track down the missing masterpiece, Guarnaccia learns that someone also killed Sir Christopher, whose villa robbery made Salvatore arrive too late to help Sara. As he keeps digging, he finds a link between the two deaths, but so far unable to determine who wanted both dead.
The Guarnaccia police procedurals are some of the sub-genre's best. Readers get a taste of Italian law enforcement through the methodical Guarnaccia, a tremendous lead protagonist. SOME BTTER TASTE is a strong entry as the cleverly deigned who-done-it is more personnel than usual for the quiet hero. Anyone who reads this novel or any of Magdalen Nabb's works will go away with a sweet taste desiring more novels by a superb mystery author.

Visiting Florence in vain.......2002-11-10
This book just ambles on and on, and on. The mareciallo talks to a number of people. The capitano talks to another number of people. Nothing nasty is really happening, and nothing connects up. Add a measure of holocaust to make it sinister. Only in the very end do the explanations come. They dont make too much sense, and certainly could not have been predicted.
This is the first book I read by this author. I believe that I will not touch another one in a long time. It does not even have the redeeming quality of well delineated characters.

Stars for the art and style only.......2004-05-31
I'm a huge fan of kung fu comics. I love the bigger than life styles, the way moves flow from panel to panel and the artwork in general. From a looks perspective, this comic doesn't disappoint. However, the storyline is truly wretched. Kung fu comics don't have the deepest plots, but even no plot would be worse than this BAD plot. The writing is awful, there are huge plot holes and the characters have the maturity of 3 year olds. If you want to read a much better comic, read The Storm Riders.
Its Tight.......2004-01-28
This is a tight comic book. Its like reading a good action Anime. This is the 5th book in collection, and seeing this is the only one Amazon seems to have, I won't go into detail about it. But if u like beautiful drawings, cool characters and other Anime like things, check it out. From Vol. 1-7. I believe they're still making them though.

Twenty of the recipes are brand new and, for the first time, all of the entries are totally vegan. The chapters are arranged according to season, allowing chefs to highlight the best from the market with international flair, with soups like fall's Moroccan Lentil & Chickpea Soup and Southwestern Fresh Corn Stew; hearty winter warmers like Brazilian Black Bean Stew and Four-Grain Tomato Soup; the fresh spring flavors of Curried Cashew Vegetable Soup; and summertime no-cook quickies such as a Minted Peach Soup. A section of accompaniments, such as breads and muffins, to make while soups are simmering rounds out this healthy and delicious showcase of the flavor and excitement of seasonal, vegan cooking.
Customer Reviews:
Happy with purchase.......2007-02-17
I tried the recipe for Curried Red Lentil Soup before purchasing the book after having found it on the internet, and it is absolutely fabulous. So I decided to order the book based on that and the other reviews it has gotten. I haven't made any other of the recipes yet, but I see many that sound wonderful and look forward to trying them.
Great vegan soup recipes.......2007-02-14
I have been making a lot of soup as a way to eat healthier and lighter, and this book has been great. I like how it is organized into the four seasons to encourage us to eat seasonally-available foods. I have made about six or seven of the soups, and I would say that the majority of them were quite good. This inexpensive book seems like a great gift for vegetarians/vegans to give to their friends (even omnivores), as this collection of soups will appeal to anyone.
tasty vegan soups.......2007-01-09
helpful because it is organized by season. lighter soups in the warmer months, more hearty soups for the colder weather.
great recipes.......2006-11-06
This is a great soup book with wholesome bread and muffin recipes at the end. I've made 2 soups so far and both were great. I highly recommend this book.

Reviewer that called this book "an abomination" is a total loser!.......2005-08-29
I haven't yet made anything from the book, but as an experienced cook myself, I can read a recipe and know pretty much whether I will like it or not. I might make a mistake once in a while, but it's very unlikely that anyone who calls themself "a skilled and experienced" cook would choose as many as six recipes and not be able to tell they would be "vile" once made. I'm all for honest reviewing, and if you don't like a book, so be it, but this review was unnecessarily harsh and, in my judgment, probably the act of someone who has very little nice to say about anyone or anything.
Once I try some of the recipes, I'll try to report back on them. For now, I've just read through them, and there's hardly one that doesn't sound interesting to me. On that basis alone, I feel justified on giving the book 5 stars, since I can't say that about most non-dessert cookbooks!
An abomination.......2004-05-10
Sorry to disagree with the other reviewers, but this is the worst cookbook I have ever bought. I am a skilled and experienced vegetarian cook, and recipes in this book are perversely, malignantly vile. There will always be recipes we don't like in any cookbook, but I tried half a dozen soups in this book and they were just wretched. After the last one I just threw the book in the recycling bin. Back to Moosewood!
Inspired one-dish meals.......2003-02-03
For me, the one thing that matters about a cookbook is: is it *inspired* or not? The ones that are not may have one to a few usable recipes, almost by accident, but the majority are either based on stale ideas, or they are too heavy, due to their use of meat, fat, sugar, or other such ingredients.
This book far surpassed my expectations. The recipes are original, hearty, satisfying - and low-fat. One of these soups with some bread and cheese makes for a simple and delicious weekday meal.
Most of the soups we've tried from this book have come out very well. We got off to a good start with Garlicky Cream of Celery Soup (p. 39). Examples of other successes: Cream of White Vegetables (p. 15; this worked fine with Chinese white radish/daikon; turnip is unavailable in Taiwan) - very smooth, soothing and flavorful; Gingered Pumpkin-Apple Soup (p. 25) - I'm not sure I'll put the apple in next time, but we all enjoyed the complex flavors of this one; Cream of Broccoli Soup with Whole Wheat Pasta (p. 96) also wasn't bad, even with plain macaroni shells. The Moroccan-Style Vegetable Stew (p. 26), with pumpkin, chickpeas and couscous, was very unusual and quite tasty. I was less impressed with the Tomato-Rice Soup with Snow Peas (p. 93) - this ended up something like Campbell's tomato rice, but then but I did make some substitutions, like white rice for brown. And I probably should have let the Curried Cauliflower-Cheese Soup (p. 84) thicken more before serving. You can skip the Sauerkraut Soup (p. 36) - this was edible, but didn't much appeal to any of us; too heavy on the sweet and sour, and not very satisfying. Still, I'm very gung ho about continuing to try out the other recipes. Well over half the recipes look doable to me in our environment, and that's a remarkably high ratio. I have found no other soup cookbook that can compare with this one. The recipes that work - and that has been most of them so far - are excellent, and just our style.
The book not only gives individual recipes but in fact teaches a *method* for making good vegetarian soups, i.e. pureeing cooked vegetables for a thick and hearty but not too rich base. Organizing the recipes by the seasons makes it easier to find a soup suited to the weather.
P. 27 has a recipe for 'Squash and Corn Chower', but that's the only typo I've spotted. The pencil drawings and quotes are quite charming. I haven't yet tried the bread and other 'accompaniments' recipes in the back, but they look intriguing.
In short: if you like soup but not meat, and are looking for ideas for simple but very good meals on the light side, this book is an outstanding choice.
Great soup book!.......2002-08-11
I'm a huge soup fan - not sure why but I just love it. So, this book hit the spot for me. I love cooking with vegetables that are in season and this book makes it so easy - this time of year (summer) when I can go to the farmer's markets to get really fresh foods it's just that much better. I just flip to that section of the book and can easily make my shopping list not having to wonder well do I have to go to the supermarket to get that other ingredientt hat needs to be flown here from half way across the world? The recipes are sooo tasty and there's lots of variety. There are curried soups, cream based soups, hearty bean soups, and they cut across nationalities/ethnicities. You won't be disappointed with this one.
Delicious! Inexpensive! Quick! Satisfying! A great book........2002-07-09
I own about 35 vegetarian cookbooks, and decided to stop buying any more. However, finding a variety of good soups that I could center a meal around has never been easier once I gave in and purchased this book. I've so far prepared about fifteen recipes, and enjoyed each and every one, and plan to make them all again. This may be the one cookbook that I eventually prepare all of the recipes therein. A MUST HAVE cookbook...you won't regret the purchase. Your mouth, stomach, heart, and pocketbook will all thank you regularly for your wise decision!

I truly enjoyed this book and it has all the information one needs to take care of a rat!
The best care book for rat owners!.......2007-01-04
This is the best and most accurate rattie care guide I've read. Ms Ducommun is know as the Rat Lady and has been one of the best rat health experts for many many years.
I have 5 rats myself and even though I'm experienced in their care I found this book interesting to read. I think every rat enthusiast should have this on their book shelf :-)
A very informative book.......2007-01-01
We landed ourselves a pet rat a little over a year ago. Neither of us really knew much about rats, but we muddled through researching here and there on the internet and asking questions at the pet shop, etc. Our rat seemed healthy and happy, but I always worried that we might be missing something.
I received this book for Christmas, and by the end of Christmas morning I had read 2/3 of it! It is such an interesting and informative read. It put my mind at ease on several issues, taught me quite a bit and it is great to know that I have it as a reference if anything should ever happen to our precious Ratatouille! Like another reviewer already said, it might not go into quite enough detail for people who already know a lot about rats, but for your everyday rat owner, I think it is more than sufficient.
Oh, and, after reading in this book that you should never keep a solitary rat, unless you can spend several hours a day with it (we manage a couple of hours a day), we are off to get a house mate for her, in the new year. Of course, now we have this book, we know how to successfully introduce the new rat in the correct and proper way ;o)
Complete Care: Rats .......2005-08-10
I have a pet rat, and this book was helpful. I especially liked the chapters telling about games you can play with your rat and showing them. It was also very helpful on food, cages, and health. I would recommend it to people of all ages.
A Good Book for the Basics of Care.......2005-07-08
This book is a nice book if you are looking for the basics of rat care at a glance. This book gives an overview of what a rat is like. Plus, since the author is the famed "Rat Lady," you know that you are getting a great book with accurate information.
Of course, the book doesn't go very in-depth with everything. It lists off common illnesses, a few tricks, and the basics. If that is what you're looking for in a rat book, then this is the book for you!

Worth it for the story alone, of course the rest helps........2005-02-28
So what sets this book up to be any different than any other collectible book? "The Laughlin story" We came real close to calling this Shakespeare pottery. Just the history and the changing technology is worth reading about.
After that is my favorite. "That Radioactive Red"
As the title implies there are sections with stories on Harlequin, Riviera, and Kitchen Kraft
In the back there are suggested values and a list of Collector Books for further reading.
One major item, the pictures are in color.
The Bible of Fiestaware.......1997-12-03
Whether you have 2 pieces or 200 pieces of Fiestaware, this is the best handbook around. The Huxfords explain Fiestaware's history thoroughly. The collector will also be grateful for the many beautiful pix and credible pricing guidelines. As my dog-eared copy can attest, the guidebook will become your best friend when Fiesta shopping!
I give this book a 10, but I hope the next edition - which is rumored to be out in 1998 - will address the new Fiesta line as some colors are now very collectible.

Excellent Reference of Modern Furniture.......2007-02-06
This is the best compendium of pictures and details about the Modern Furniture movement!
one of the most authoritative guides to furniture and lighting designs of the 20th and 21st centuries in print.......2006-04-27
The third edition of Jerryll Habegger and Joseph H. Osman's SOURCEBOOK OF MODERN FURNITURE should be on the reference shelves of ANY serious interior design collection. Appearing in its third revised edition, SOURCEBOOK provides one of the most authoritative guides to furniture and lighting designs of the 20th and 21st centuries in print, pairing color photos with features of works by hundreds of notable designers. new edition.......2004-07-21
did not someone write that they are coming out with a new edition in fall 2004? this is the only problem with this edition. it is not updated. soon to be resolved it seems.
When the best gets better!!!.......2003-08-13
As predicted, the 3rd edition is OFF THE HOOK!!! The 3rd edition, published in 2005, has close to 700 new entries. Nearly half of the photos are in color and the authors have included web site information for manufacturers. This latest edition is in the collection of prominent museums and academic institutions across the globe, especially universities which have significant design and architecture programs. This is certainly a must have edition for the intellectually astute connoisseur of furniture and design.
BTW, many of the listed reviews are referring to the 2nd edition which is now 10 years old!!! Check to be sure which edition other reviewers are referring to before making a purchase decision...you wouldn't want to miss out!!
Odd Criteria for "Modern".......2003-07-10
I was disappointed with the book and returned it. Nothing by Robsjohn Gibbings. Nothing by Harvey Probber. Only a single piece by Wormley. Only two by Finn Juhl. Instead, the selection seems weighted heavily toward austere Italian designs of metal and glass, esp. those produced in the 1960s and later. I did not expect the editors to show such a lack of interest in wood. And given the book's definitive-sounding title, I did not expect them to adopt such an rigid and uninteresting definition of "modern."

Book Description
Scenes of Instruction is the memoir of noted scholar of African American literature Michael Awkward. Structured around the commencement ceremonies that marked his graduations from various schools, it presents Awkward’s coming-of-age as a bookish black male in the projects of 1970s Philadelphia. His relationships with his family and peers, their struggles with poverty and addiction, and his eventual move from underfunded urban schools to a prestigious private school all become parts of a memorable script.
With a recurring focus on how his mother’s tragic weaknesses and her compelling strengths affected his development, Awkward intersperses the chronologically arranged autobiographical sections with ruminations on his own interests in literary and cultural criticism. As a male scholar who has come under fire for describing himself as a feminist critic, he reflects on such issues as identity politics and the politics of academia, affirmative action, and the Million Man March.
By connecting his personal experiences with larger political, cultural, and professional questions, Awkward uses his life as a palette on which to blend equations of race and reading, urbanity and mutilation, alcoholism, pain, gender, learning, sex, literature, and love.
Customer Reviews:
Lessons in Autobiography, Gender, and Race.......2000-11-03
Michael Awkward's memoir is instructive--in numerous ways: it contains insights on how to write memoirs, especially if one is a scholar/critical theorist; it instructs us on the intersection of race and gender (Awkward is a self-described black male feminist--raised in Philadelphia); and it shows us how we might bring postmodern forms of analysis to the stories we have lived. The central "other" in Awkward's book is his mother. With great insight, he shares the pain of her life, and his related pain, with the reader. This book is a powerful gift; I have learned much from it.
