Without a doubt, the family and friends of fictional sleuths are two of the most endangered species on the planet. Crime novelists seem to have no qualms about sacrificing the people nearest and dearest to their protagonists, if doing so will advance plot development or bestow emotional depth upon their series stars. Peter Robinson continues this ruthless tradition in Strange Affair, his tension-packed 15th novel featuring headstrong British Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks. Still on the mend after the blazing finale of 2004's Playing with Fire, temporarily sworn off whiskey but back to smoking, Banks is interrupted in the midst of brooding over his life and failed relationships by a message from his estranged younger brother, Roy, who says he needs the DCI's help in "a matter of life and death." Concerned, especially since Roy boasts a history of dubious business dealings, Banks leaves Yorkshire for his sibling's home in London, only to find that residence unlocked, Roy's computer missing, and his cell phone left behind. After learning that Roy was last seen stepping into a car with an unidentified man, and receiving on Roy's mobile what appears to be a photo of his only brother slumped over in a chair, the cop fears that a kidnapping has occurred.
Meanwhile, back in Eastvale, Banks's colleague and ex-lover, Detective Inspector Annie Cabbot, probes the shooting death of Jennifer Clewes, a 27-year-old family planning center administrator from London who's been found in her car, with the address of Banks's once-ruined (and recently broken into) cottage tucked into her jeans pocket. As Annie seeks to identify Clewes's attacker and determine whether this crime fits a pattern of roadway assaults, she's anxious also to discover what connection Banks may have to the case. But the DCI is frustratingly nowhere to be found.
Like 2003's Close to Home, Strange Affair adds some welcome bricks to Banks's back story, this time forcing him to reappraise a brother whom he had long resented and distrusted. Simultaneously, Robinson's latest police procedural delivers artfully contrived, intersecting story lines charged with rumors of international arms dealing, hints of misdeeds at a women's clinic, secondary players so shady they might be invisible after sundown, and insights into just how far Banks's career has distanced him from folks less steeped in the ugly side of mankind. An immensely satisfying mystery, filled with professional risks and personal regrets, this is truly an Affair to remember. --J. Kingston Pierce

"
On a warm summer night, an attractive woman hurtles north in a blue Peugeot with a hastily scrawled address in her pocket, while, back in London, a desperate man leaves an urgent late-night phone message on his brother's answering machine. By sunrise the next morning, the woman is found inside her car along an otherwise peaceful country lane, shot, execution-style, through the head.
Welcome to the idyllic Yorkshire Dales, where Detective Inspector Annie Cabbot arrives on the scene and discovers, to her surprise, a slip of paper in the dead woman's pocket that bears the name of her colleague and erstwhile lover, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks. Banks, meanwhile -- already haunted and withdrawn after nearly dying in the fire that destroyed his home -- has gone missing just when he's needed most, and has left plenty of questions behind.
As Annie struggles to determine whether or not Banks is safe -- and what role he may have played in the woman's murder -- Banks himself investigates the mysterious disappearance of his estranged brother, Roy, whose late-night call for help brings Banks back to London. Working from Roy's swank apartment, Banks makes the rounds to Roy's old haunts and slowly inhabits the life of his younger brother -- the black sheep of the family, who always seemed to sail a little too close to the wind. As the trail of clues about Roy's life and associations draws Banks into a dark circle of conspiracy and corruption, mobsters and murder, Banks suddenly realizes he's running out of time to save Roy, and by digging too deep, he may be exposing himself and his family to the same -- possibly deadly -- danger.

Another Expert Outing.......2007-08-12
Robinson again proves himself a modern ace. Banks takes some hard hits in this book. It's bleak, without ever being depressing.
Excellent read, really quite hard to put down........2007-05-13
This was the first of Robinson's many books that I've read, I just finished it yesterday. I have to say he's a master at what he does, if his other books are on a par with this one.
Without giving anything away, it's a murder mystery (of course) set in two different time periods. On of them is the late 1960's British rock scene. Those were the salad days of my adolescence, and Robinson took me on quite a stroll down memory lane.
He draws that period with such a fine touch that I wondered if he hadn't played in a band himself then. And his plotting was tighter than the B-string on a cheap guitar.
If you love the type of fiction just described, it doesn't get much better than this one. But save it until you can read it start to finish, as it's really quite hard to put down.
Crime Writing at its Very Best.......2007-03-22
Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and is the author of thirteen previous novels featuring Inspector Banks. He is the winner of numerous awards in the United States, Britain and Canada, and in 2002 he won the CWA Dagger in the Library. As I also come from Leeds the background to his stories is something that I have experienced first hand and because of this I have a special affection for his books. However they would be first class crime fiction wherever they were based.
Inspector Banks receives a phone call from his brother Roy in London, something of a novelty in itself. But the phone call is quite disturbing and has an air of mystery to it. Banks immediately leaves his patch in Yorkshire and heads off down to the big city to seek out Roy. Meanwhile DI Annie Cabbot is called to the scene of a murder on a quiet stretch of road just outside Eastvale. A young woman has been found dead in her car. The strange thing is that the victim has Banks's name and address written on a piece of paper in the pocket of her jeans.
Meanwhile Banks is staying in his brothers luxurious, but empty house, uncovering more and more details about a brother, that he never really knew and didn't particularly like. Up north Annie tracks down the female victim's friends and colleagues. It seems that both trails are looking likely to intersect at some point and the consequences could be terrifying for both Banks and Annie . . .
Strange Indeed..........2007-03-10
...that Robinson's latest books have become as pedestrian as this one. I found the plot uninspiring at best, and completely devoid of surprises. All in all, one could skip this entry and not miss a thing. As always, Robinson is a good writer, and he's brought Banks to an interesting -- albeit depressing -- psychological place, but one can't help but feel that he and the series are simply treading water at this point. If only the entire book were as brilliant and incisive as the very last line. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the next one.
Strange Book.......2006-10-12
Strange Affair by Peter Robinson is the first Inspector Banks novel I've read, and I'm glad to find another mystery series I can follow. In this book, Inspector Banks is searching for his brother who, after leaving a strange message on Banks' answering machine, disappears. Banks initiates a search for his brother, while at the same time, is embroiled in an investigation of the strange murder of a young woman, who is found dead in her car by the side of the road.
Banks is single-minded in his pursuit of the truth about what happened to his brother, and Robinson paints him as a somewhat solitary figure who really doesn't understand how his dedication to solving crimes alienates him from other people.
I think people who enjoy Elizabeth George's novels would probably like this book. It did leave me with a vaguely unsettled feeling- perhaps because all the personal issues were not neatly wrapped up and tied with a nice little bow, but it was a page turner none the less.
Book Description
Nevare Burvelle was destined from birth to be a soldier. The second son of a newly anointed nobleman, he must endure the rigors of military training at the elite King's Cavella Academy—and survive the hatred, cruelty, and derision of his aristocratic classmates—before joining the King of Gernia's brutal campaign of territorial expansion. The life chosen for him will be fraught with hardship, for he must ultimately face a forest-dwelling folk who will not submit easily to a king's tyranny. And they possess an ancient magic their would-be conquerors have long discounted—a powerful sorcery that threatens to claim Nevare Burvelle's soul and devastate his world once the Dark Evening brings the carnival to Old Thares.

The Wonderful Worlds of Robin Hobb.......2007-07-19
Robin Hobb has created a fabulous series of worlds in her writing career. This new world is strangely distressed. It echoes our own current environmental problems, and has definate undertones of present day politics. It is fascinating to see how Robin has woven all this together with magic (of course) and a practical story of coming of age. I can't love the characters the way I have in some her other books so I am exploring why I feel the way I do about them as I read through the series. Robin Hobb often reminds me of Sheri Tepper the way she makes us think deeply about the inner workings of her characters, how militaristic thinking colours our world, the environment; and this series is definately of this type - it is not a comfortable read - and I am challenged by it! I love this about Robin ... read and think!!
MIlitary Academy Woes.......2007-04-08
Premise: Nevare is a second son. And as such, his future has been decided since birth - he will be a soldier. But when his well meaning father gives him over to an old enemy to learn their ways,Nevare's path takes an unexpected turn that will work at destroying that expected future. As grows older and joins the academy, not only will he find that the structured world he has been led to believe exists, is not as black and white as he'd been told, but that he could be used as a weapon to destroy all he holds dear.
Review: Wonderfully detailed world, with well constructed societies, politics, etc. The prose was smooth as silk and a delight to read. I was totally fascinated by the differing cultures and social structures as well as the hazing and other difficulties at the academy. Only difficulty I had was that the main problem was often subdued and was minimally hinted as ever getting to have an impact. When it does, it does it BIG, but it took its sweet time. Yet this only bothered me subliminally, the rest keeping me quite busy and content.
Solid, but not spectacular.......2007-03-04
This was a solid, though unspectacular, performance from Robin Hobb.
Her performance was somewhat akin to the basketball player who scores 14 points and six rebounds per game.
Such a player is a solid starter, but not a star.
this was not at all a riveting book. it took me about a week and a half to finish it. I used the book to read for about half an hour at bedtime before sleep overtook me.
I found myself skipping through the shamanistic aspects of the tale, which I did not find credible, based on how the story was told.
Some portions of the story involving Nevare and Epiny were interesting, but certainly not interesting enough to carry the book through 600 plus pages.
Zzzzzzzzzz........2007-03-01
I am happy that this is not the first Robin Hobb book I picked up. Her other series have been a delight, but up to this point, (about 190 pages in) Shaman's Crossing has been a tedious chore to read. The characters are uninteresting and the world she is developing does not have the same flair as her other works. I want to know more about the people and their backgrounds, not because I need more description (far from it), but because I think something is missing.
I am encouraged by those who say it will pick up the pace, but so far I have seen glaciers that move faster. I will finish the book hoping for a change and out of a sense of loyalty to an author who has provided me with many hours of entertainment, but if it retains the same flavor throughout, I doubt that I will read the next installment.
Mixed Reaction.......2007-02-27
I am a solid Robin Hobb fan and was thrilled when I found that she had a new trilogy out....and I read this book, cover to cover, with no skimming even when I hit the parts that did actually bore me - something I never thought Hobb could do - because her incredible descriptive abilities are almost mesmerizing and hold me glued to the page....even when a voice in my brain is screaming, "is she going to go through the bit about soldier's sons and noble's sons one more time?!" She must have gone over and over several issues pertinent to the story as though this were the second book in a trilogy and she needed to keep reminding you of this...that, or she thinks her readers are incapable of remembering the basic relationships on which her story is based (duh!)...it borders on insulting at times, Robin!
I think that the repetitiveness throughout the book is what causes a lot of the slowness and dryness and sense of boredom that prior reviewers complain of....there is simply no reason to keep repeating over...and over...and over....and over.....how the battle lord's sons and noble's soldier sons differ.
While this certainly isn't the most interesting of Hobb's worlds I've lived in......it is crafted as fully....and drew me in as completely....and that is what I look for in a book....to go somewhere different, have some different experiences and marvel at how someone can think up all that!

Recently, temperament traits have come to the forefront of child development theory. In Raising Your Spirited Child, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's first contribution is to redefine the "difficult child" as the "spirited" child, a child that is, as she says, MORE. Many people are leery about books that are too quick to "type" kids, but Kurcinka, a parent of a spirited child herself and a parent educator for 20 years, doesn't fall into that trap. Instead, she provides tools to understanding your own temperament as well as your child's. When you understand your temperamental matches--and your mismatches--you can better understand, work, live, socialize, and enjoy spirit in your child. By reframing challenging temperamental qualities in a positive way, and by giving readers specific tools to work with these qualities, Kurcinka has provided a book that will help all parents, especially the parents of spirited children, understand and better parent their children.
Book Description
The spirited child often called "difficult" or "strong-willed" can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate. Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more" by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Through vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka offers parents emotional support and proven strategies for handling their spirited child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:
- Understand your child's and your own temperamental traits
- Plan for success with a simple four-step program
- Discover the power of positive rather than negative labels
- Cope with tantrums and blowups when they do occur
- Develop strategies for handling mealtimes, bedtimes, holidays, school and many other situations
Filled with personal insight and authoritative advice, Raising Your Spirited Child can help make parenting the joy it should be, rather than the trial it can be.

Strongly recommend.......2007-08-14
This book is one of the best parenting books available. It is one of the few books that actually offers substantive advice about how to deal with certain behaviors. Furthermore, it is the only book that I have read that maintains a positive outlook on "spirited" children. The book does not focus on ways to change the child and does not imply that the child has a disability. It simply teaches the parent how to deal to deal with behaviors and feelings of the spirited child. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the book is. I reread parts of it nearly every night.
Saved my mind.......2007-07-20
I was so sure my son was different in so many ways that I would never be able to keep up with him. This book helped me decide which of his spirits needed extra attention from me and how to direct that spirit once I identified it. Now when he goes nuts jumping up and down on the bed, I know it's because he has a lot of pent up energy from having to be still for a long time (i.e. school). When he gets very quiet and withdraws I know he is needing special one on one attention because something has bothered him too much and he's embarrassed by that. There are so many nuances for each of our children and this book really helps figure out the particular ones that your own child is gifted with.

The book was great. I was very please with it. I recomend it to everybody.
If you think you need this book, then you do!.......2007-05-21
This book is fantastic. I just can't say enough great things about it. If you think your child might be "spirited" do yourself a favor and give this book a read.
A great guide for the perplexed (parent, that is).......2007-04-22
This lady obviously knows her stuff, as well as her audience. Ms. Sheedy Kurcinka seems to be describing my child in some passages. I found the tips for heading off a meltdown quite helpful. And it's of course comforting to know I'm not in this alone! I'd recommend the book to any parent who's getting gray dealing with a "spirited" child.

Book Description
Now in a NEW UPDATED version, Kurcinka offers parents the most up–to–date research, effective strategies and real life stories for:
•Managing intensity – not just the kids, but parents too
•Getting the sleep every family needs and deserves,
•Choosing their battles
•Helping children to hear their instructions
•Assisting children in getting along with siblings and peers, and
•Being successful in school and at home.
Spirited children possess traits we value in adults, yet find challenging in children. Studies now show that these children are "wired" to be more reactive to the world around them. The solution, rather than medication or punishment, is understanding temperament and working with it. Kurcinka in a supportive, warm style is able to reveal to parents how to do it, often leading them to ask, "How did she get into my home?" Winner of the Parents' Choice Award, voted one of the top twenty books for parents, and a "real life saver" for parents, this updated version is eagerly awaited by parents and professionals.

Good for every parent........2007-10-05
Raising Your Spirited Child is a good resource for every parent. It is important to understand your child's unique temperament. I especially like the practical suggestions and summaries of things to say to your child. It is a very positive book!
Life Changing.......2007-10-02
I can only describe this book as liberating. When I found it, our son was 5. I sat and cried with relief, knowing I was not alone. 7 years later I still quote many part of the books. I don't even know how many copies I have bought and lent out. My favorite part was the real definitions of introvert vs. extrovert...wow, what perspective. This concept alone has totally helped me to better understand my family and friends. It is also a wonderful thing to teach my kids so that they can recognize the needs of themselves and their friends. Our son is now 12 years old, very intelligent with a huge heart. This book helped us to learn how to adapt his environment without enabling him. Understanding his need for more sleep, less drama, and smoother transitions help him to be stronger and more secure emotionally and let's be honest....it all benefits the family dynamics. Praise God!
truly excellent book.......2007-08-16
As soon as I started reading this book, I used some of the recommened techniques and got miraculous results. It helped me deal with my stress, and I found my 3 year old really relieved too. I guess anyone would prefer this style of interaction over our previous push & pull. I think this is a must read for anyone with any kind of child...not just spirited ones. It not only gives incite into understanding and dealing with your child's temperament, it helped me understand my own better too so I could clue her into my trigger points as well as her own.
Great resource-- I'm purchasing a 2nd copy 10 yrs later!.......2007-08-01
This was a total eye opener when I originally purchased this book 10 years ago! (My son was 2 and my daughter was a newborn!)I've since recommended it and loaned it out so many times that my copy didn't come back the last time! (And I can't remember who has it now!) I both laughed & cried while reading it and I finished it in 1 night (newborn-remember?)It really helped both my husband and me see what WE were doing differently--not necessarily "wrong", just not RIGHT for our son--and WE made changes. (Note to the person who wrote "this book had no tips we could use": read it again & remember you're the parent who needs to guide the child.) We realized simple things--we shouldn't have taken him on numerous errands at the end of his day or WE paid for it (our son doesn't handle ANY change well and he still doesn't--he's 12 now!) We've had to teach HIM how to handle difficult situations. I'm now going to read it again to help with the preteen years for both of my children!
Wonderful!!!.......2007-07-08
This book is fantastic for anyone who suspects that they are raising a spirited child. Other child raising books just aren't sufficient when you're raising a child with "spirit." It was a delight and a relief to know that there are other children in the world who have as much energy and are as tenacious as mine. I highly recommend this book!

France for Foodies.......2005-11-17
Anyone who likes food, France, or armchair travel should check out Gastronomie! You can read it from cover to cover, chuckling as you uncover funny food fixations of the French, or following the geographic and historical themes to learn how the history of this part of Europe is really the story of what people ate. If you are planning a trip, you will certainly want to pick up some of the routes leading to food shrines not usually included in normal guide books. Or, if you are staying home, you can try out the recipes and gourmet secrets, not to mention impressing your friends with your amazing store of food trivia. (Who knew that the ditty, "Alouette, gentille alouette" referred to pate preparation? Or that one reason to visit Biarritz is the Musee du Chocolat? Or that commercial growing of mushrooms originated in Louis XIV's France?)Much more than a guide book, Gastronomie! is a conversation piece you'll enjoy with all your gourmet friends.

Flashy Pictures, bland writing........2001-11-15
As a coffee table book of flashy pictures of Volkswagens done up in the classic "California Look," this will fit the bill with recent and period photos of the style; the features of which repeated until you expect a quiz from the author. Seume, who has a fixation on these particular period vehicles bordering on the, shall we say, unhealthy, writes as though he is the only one that can possibly appreciate what was basically a short customizing "craze" in late 60's Orange County California. Like many males with automotive fixations, the creators of this style sought to gain individuality through customizing their cars in a nearly identical manner. As with many things weirdly American, Seume notes with pride how this particularly narrow and short-lived styling look has recently gained a near fanatical following internationally, with Finns, Germans, Japanese, and other young men looking to belong and now affording what was basically meant to be an extremely cheap, throw-away automobile taking this style to near-worship in car clubs that approach the rivalry of street gangs. In Europe, the "Cal Look" as it is known in the States, is refered to as "Old School," with current auto part manufacturers mass-reproducing copies of the styling pieces for instant consumption at outrageous prices. Seume loses himself in his writing that borders on the fetishistic, and if a reader actually manages to read the all the copy written by the author, they were truly bored indeed. The photos of the modern examples done up in the style are gourgeous, but in reality toys, never to be driven on the street or seen outside a garage. One begins to wonder about someone who spends $30 to $40,000 on restoration and obscure period customizing pieces for a car that originally sold for $1995. If you like beautiful and period photos of old custom Volkswagens, this book is for you. The publisher could have left out the text written by Seume and no one would have ever noticed.
a summary of a fantastic area of volkswagen modification.......1998-09-19
If you are one of those people that prefers to see a vw with a set of nice wheels and some nice trick bits, then this is the book for you. It captures the essence of the california look perfectly and could quite easily transform a hardcore vintage enthusiast into a cal look lover. It features several very well written sections covering different areas of influence on the scene. One covers the originators of the look, one the major companies involved with it, and another on the clubs that helped form the scene. Keith Seume has also managed to include a large amount of rare photos of early development taking place, right through to photos of clubs still alive from the heyday of the california look. Once you get this book you will be forever converted to that slammed, agro look of the cal lookers.

Customer Reviews:
Mediocre book with nice photographs.......2007-10-09
The photographs in Ms. Schwartz's book are lovely, but I found the writing to be rather amateurish and overblown. Additionally, I learned little about the purses themselves. The text entries were mostly descriptive in nature. I found that frustrating. I enjoyed looking at the photographs, but learned nothing about the purses when reading the text. I could easily see the details in each purse and didn't need the author to describe what I saw. I wanted information on the purse, e.g., its history, its provenance, its significance. I got none of that. The book also suffers from poor editing and proofreading. Shame on the publisher for embarrassing this author by not correcting her grammatical and punctuation mistakes!
I rated the book with one star only because it seemed fairly obvious that many of the positive reviews could have been written by Ms. Schwartz's family and friends. Inflated review ratings help no one.
In summary, this is a book I would happily browse through while shopping, but wouldn't take to the purchase counter.
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words.......2003-06-17
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this gem of a book is a superlative example. Brimming with exquisitely beautiful photographs, each and every page is a feast for the eyes. Ms. Schwartz's inclusion of the painstaking process that goes into the creation of these delicate feminine accoutrements provides the reader with an astounding appreciation for how difficult the craft for such a practical accessory actually was. A "Must Have" for amateurs as well as serious collectors!
I have already ordered my copy of her latest book (at press now), "Purse Masterpieces," which promises, not only gorgeous photographs, but a thoroughly investigated background for the inspirations (Art, Literature, Architecture, etc.) behind the pictured scenes.
Can't wait for her next book, PURSE MASTERPIECES!!.......2003-06-13
I just found out Schwartz has another book on vintage purses coming out this fall, Purse Masterpieces. I am delighted that her third book will be about a subject seldom covered in such depth: vintage purses.
I have searched everywhere for books on vintage purses. Schwartz's Vintage Purses at Their Best book not only shows hundreds of purses in color but also offers a sneak peek at the production of purses.
Not quite what I wanted........2001-09-10
The book is absolutely beautiful, however, I would like to have read more history on the individual bags. All In all, very well done.
FABULOUS!!!!.......2001-06-20
A Fabulous book containing pictures of purses unsurpassed! Sure hope she writes another one! A thousand thank yous!!!!!

Book Description
Lauderdale's Notes on Adam Smith's Wealth of Nation's publishes, for the first time, a work of the 8th Earl of Lauderdale, James Maitland. Lauderdale's work had been neglectd until this century, but he is now seen as the earliest systemic critic of Smith.
Lauderdale's Notes on Adam Smith's Wealth of Nation's is reproduced from hand-writted notes which appear in Lauderdale's own edition of The Wealth of Nations and which was discovered only five years ago.
The work illustrates the characteristics of Lauderdale's economic thought which were to be developed in later writings. The work clearly marks him a decided, and probably the first, opponent of the Smithian tradition of classical political economy and one of the forerunners of modern economics. The notes are reproduced in full along with the relevant passages from The Wealth of Nations to which they refer.

Book Description
When assessing the legacy of black intellectuals in the 20th century there has been a general tendency to overlook the impact of black religious leaders. In Black Religious Intellectuals and the Fight for Equality from the Age of Jim Crow to the Dawn of the 21st Century, Professor Clarence Taylor sheds some much-needed light on the rich intellectual and political tradition that lies in the black religious community. From the Pentecostalism of Bishop Smallwood Williams and the flamboyant leadership of the Reverend Al Sharpton, to the radical Presbyterianism of Milton Arthur Galamison and the controversial and mass-mobilization by Minister Louis Farrakhan, black religious leaders have figured prominently in the struggle for social equality in America.
Taylor shows how black leaders were able to carve out a space for religion as part of a progressive political agenda. Examining leaders from diverse religious and political backgrounds, he reveals the complex and innovative ways that black religious notions were continually reworked and reconstructed to accommodate the communities they served.
In the tradition of Cornel West, Hazel Carby, and Harold Cruse, Taylor gives us a valuable, though-provoking work that credits black church leadership for its important role in not only the fight for equality but also in shaping intellectual thought in this country.
