Book Description

Here together for the first time on CD, Santa Teresa P.I. Kinsey Millhone is still on the case…

"G" Is for Gumshoe
Kinsey Millhone’s thirty-third birthday brings about final renovations to her apartment, a new case, and the top slot on Tyrone Patty’s hit list. Obviously, it would turn out to be a birthday to remember.

"H" Is for Homicide
To the cops, the death of claims adjuster Parnell Perkins looked like a robbery gone sour; to Kinsey Millhone, it looks strangely suspicious. As the evidence leads Kinsey to insurance scammer Bibianna Diaz, she must race to get to her before Bibianna’s spurned and violent suitor Raymond Maldonado does.

"I" Is for Innocent
Kenneth Voight thought that justice had not been served when David Barney was acquitted in the shooting death of Voight’s ex-wife, Isabelle. Five years later, Voight is the plaintiff in a civil suit in which Barney stands accused of Isabelle’s wrongful death. When Voight hires Kinsey to gather the necessary damning evidence, a simple civil case becomes a deadly hunt for someone who once got away with murder–and may again.

I drive 35-45 minutes each way to work. The news is too depressing. I found these mysteries to be an enjoyable diversion. Not too deep, but good mysteries. Following a single character through three mysteries makes her a friend on my otherwise lonely drives. I have now gone through 9 such mysteries. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Good story, great art.......2007-01-15

I don't understand the panning either. The story was pretty good. The reviewer who was befuddled about Keyop stabbing the scientist doesn't get subtlety. I was pretty obvious why he flipped out. I was an interesting new take. I wish it continued.

5 out of 5 stars Story is Excellent!.......2005-03-16

Being a die-hard fan, I loved the stort. Munier obviously was a fan of this series as well, because he catches the very essence of each one of the characters. This is true for each issue he scribed. Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2003-12-14

I'm really surprised to see people panning this. I think the Battle of the Planets comics have been exceptionally well done, not just in the art but in the story as well. We finally learn why the Spectrans look just like humans (I've always disliked the cliche of "humanoid" aliens, and I was pleased to get a reasonable explanation for once), we learn what the "spirit" is that Zoltar receives his orders from, we see the Earth public's reaction to the growing realization that there are aliens among us laying the groundwork for an invasion--including a fair number of human collaborators. Even General Tomak, a new character that one reviewer criticized, turns out to have a good reason for being there. Again, I think the monthly series has been quite well done, and I consider myself a tough critic of comics, especially Image (I have a long-standing grudge against Image for their style-over-substance approach and love of gore and violence displayed in so many of their comics--but NOT in this one, thankfully.)

Unfortunately, we don't get much of the overall story arc in this first volume. I'd hoped that now that Image has completed the first run of the monthly series and switched to a black & white manga-style format, that the color stories would all be reprinted in a single graphic novel, but instead they've spread it over three. G-Force's first mission doesn't go very well for them, but their first mission is all we get in this volume. Most of the backstory and explanations I spoke of don't occur until later, either.

I should point out that there is one scene in this volume that seemed jarring to me (Spoiler warning)--Keyop (the little sidekick) kills a bad guy in a pretty bloody fashion. It makes sense in the context of the story, and it's handled tactfully, but to someone who grew up watching the sanitized Sandy Frank Engish language version of the show (as opposed to the original Gatchaman, which is supposedly much more violent), it was a bit of a shock, and I couldn't help but mutter something about Image Comics when I saw it.

Anyway, I'd say this is definitely worth your while. If not the graphic novel, then go to your local comic shop and just check out the monthly comic. I really admire the effort that's been put into it, and I'm concerned it will go under if not enough readers support it.

1 out of 5 stars Only the art is worthy of five stars........2003-11-15

Would someone please tell the comic book industry that the only way to sell comics is to combine intelligent and thought-provoking writing with excellent art? The art is here- Wilson Tortosa's pencils, UDON Studio's coloration, and Alex Ross' incredible covers are sensational and capture the original animation style created for the series by the house of Tatsunoko. Unfortunately, the writing is a mixed bag, ranging from merely adequate in a Wendy and Marvin Superheroes kind of way, to the degree of suckiness that could strip the chrome off every trailer hitch in the lower forty-eight states. And that 's a shame since the ad campaign this comic got practically promised a blockbuster hit. Guys and gals, we have here the comic equivalent of the 1998 Godzilla movie: tons of advertising, killer effects, lame delivery. Honestly, the only thoughts the the comic provoked is questioning why the heck Alex Ross didn't do a better editorial job. For crying out loud, he of all people should know that combining a great story with great art creates a great comic- look at the incredible sucess Kingdom Come was and still is. So, are you looking to read this comic for new and exciting adventures featuring G-Force? Don't even bother. They're barely a force (no pun intended) in this comic and when they are, they're nothing but sterotypical parodies of themselves, and not even in a good satirical sense- paper dolls have more personality than this. The comic is taken over by an overbearing blow-hard of an army general who wasn't even in the series to begin with. About the only good thing that can be said for the story is that there's no 7-Zark-7 Lucasfilm ripoff. Save your money and get the DVDs instead. You can fast-forward over Zark, or better yet, discover the original Gatchaman series episodes that Battle of the Planets was derived from, included in the DVDs.

2 out of 5 stars terrific artwork, clunky story--buy the DVDs instead.......2003-10-15

I remember Battle of the Planets from when I was a kid, and boy, was I disappointed by this story. The artwork was terrific, right in the spirit of the original show (which is now available on DVD). But the story made me wonder if the writer had ever seen an episode. The characters aren't themselves--they aren't really even characters. There's no real sense to what they do and why they do it. The plot has no real twists. It's just kind of there. I kept getting bored. There's a scene in the middle where Keyop goes nuts and stabs a scientist a dozen times in the chest. There's a mutillated cat. Jason is a foul-mouthed, trite womanizer who insults his teammates--and has no sense of teamwork. Remember how teamwork was at the heart of the tv show? It's not in evidence at all in this story. Princess is just a girly-girl who likes brushing her hair and wears perfume. Eh. And the writer felt it necessary to create an irritating general named Tomak who stomps all over the team and belittles them and is generally unappealing. He's not in the TV show at all, but he dominates the comic.

Save your time and money (and Tums) and buy the DVDs of the original cartoon. This may have tried to update the story, but it only succeded in diminishing it. Not once while reading did I think to myself, "THIS is why I used to love this show!" It's sad because I had such high hopes for it, too. I really wanted to like it a lot.

You might think that the subtitle, "The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body," is hyperbole, but The Book of Muscle from Men's Health delivers as promised. Australian strength coach and former powerlifting champion Ian King and Men's Health fitness director Lou Schuler cover everything you want to know about your muscles and what makes them grow, complete with dietary recommendations, exercises for every muscle group, and exercise routines. Each muscle group is illustrated and discussed, with 149 pages of clearly described, well-photographed exercises using a variety of equipment. A section on workout routines helps you put together your own program, from beginner to advanced.

Schuler's guy-talk style makes the book enjoyable to read, even on days when you have no intention of going to the gym. The artistic drawings of muscle groups, full-color photographs of beginning and ending positions of every exercise, and stunning close-ups of buffed body parts make The Book of Muscle is as beautiful as it is practical and motivating, an exceptional gift for the fitness guy in your life, and well worth the price. Highly recommended for men wanting to get in shape or stay there. --Joan Price

    Book Description

Exercise ain't easy. The body is a complicated machine, with 650 muscles and 250 million individual muscle fibers. Some would say taming those fibers and building strong, healthy muscles is not an act of labor. Some would say it's an art. Here's a book worthy of that art. The Men's Health Book of Muscle is the big, lavishly illustrated, full-color coffee table book that only Men's Health could produce-one that doubles as the ultimate guide to building a better body. The goal of The Book of Muscle is simple: create a beautiful, artistic guide to the body that also helps guys build great physiques by showing in detail how muscles work and how that knowledge can be put to use. Inside, you'll find lush anatomical illustrations and photographs of a quality that no other book on fitness can match. You'll also find complex biological information, boiled down to language any guy can understand, and three 6-month workout programs, one each for beginner, intermediate, and advanced lifters. It's big muscles, big benefit, and beautiful all at the same time. It's the book you've always wanted from the guys at Men's Health, the fitness experts you trust.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too much of a good thing.......2007-09-25

On the plus side, this is probably the best book I've ever read on the subject of weight training. On the down side, boy, there is so much to each work out that it is overwhelming.

I've been weight training for over 5 years and have used Body for Life and a number of the Men's Health training books. This volume, far and away, has the greatest number of new exercises to be used each week. In the intermediate program, e.g., there are 3 separate workouts to be alternated. Perhaps if someone has a half an hour a day to review the exercises, another 40 minutes to do them (and to tote the handsome volume to the gym), these are reasonable....but for someone who has other responsibilities, kids, job, home, this is a fairly time and concentration intensive program.

That being said, I would certainly endorse this book for anyone who wants a genuinely serious, long term program. Too often, the Men's Health "Bibles" are limited programs, leaving the lifter who is committed with wondering "what next". This book provides enough variety and different routines to make it a great long term investment.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Strengths.......2007-09-22

The book starts out with basic muscle physiology which is always good to know. Then it moves on to five chapters of exercises. They are divided up into muscles that move the shoulder, muscles that move the elbow and wrist, muscles that move the spine, muscles that move the hip, and finally, muscles that move the knee and ankle.

With that knowledge in hand, the book then describes the workout programs. Included are routines for beginner, intermmediate, and advanced lifters. A pretty good guide to weight lifting, I think it will benefit lifters of all experience levels. And I have to say, of all the weight lifting books on the market, this one definitely has the best pictures of all time. In fact they should enter some of them in photography contests.
Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder or rotator cuff problem is keeping you from lifting weights.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the serious body builder.......2007-09-22

The concepts in this book are very interesting and if a person wants to have an excellently toned body, this would be the book for them. However, the emphasis is not on serious high intensity workouts for the person wanting major gains in size.

    5 out of 5 stars best workout/lifting book (that I've seen).......2007-07-11

This book really does deserve a 5 star rating. It does, for many reasons, but foremost because relative to ALL other lifting books, this one is one covers all the bases! It is written well and does a good job explaining all the stuff surrounding muscles and muscle building. The pictures are well done and neatly illustrate how to do the exercises. The programs are well designed for pretty much all people and take you through a good progression of low weight to heavy weights. There are lots of exercises to do and they keep on changing, so someone with a short attention span like myself won't get bored! All in all, this book separates itself from it's competitors in it's professional presentation, content and thoughtful and straightforward routines.

I'm on the 7th week of the intermediate program after completing the beginner program. So far I've gone from 165 lbs to 178! All of this came at around 2/3s of the way through the beginner program (right when you start changing from low weight to heavy weight). Everyone really should start at the beginner program! I found it difficult and I was already in shape! If this book doesn't kick your butt you're doing something wrong. Don't flatter yourself thinking you'll get better results by starting at the intermediate program, just start at the beginner program unless you are very experienced. Chances are you bought this book because you ARE a beginner, so don't flatter yourself!

Caveats: With all the hoopla surrounding supplementation, I'd have appreciated more talk on supplementation. The first few sections in the beginner program are a tad confusing. Such a strong focus on rear lat pulldowns and military presses can injure one's shoulders.

    5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-06-29

Great book worth buying . Lots of helpful info for all stages of people trying to get fit.

The Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts has the homey but not hokey style you expect from this much-loved restaurant. It is refreshing to enjoy the authors' unvarnished pleasure in food and in sharing about life at the Moosewood as it relates to their desserts. It may be startling to find that the first dessert in this appealing book is nature's best dessert: fresh fruit served with cheese. But these cooks also put butter and eggs to good use, adding enough to make desserts that appeal in their richness. You'll find abundant choices of recipes for every kind of dessert: pies and cakes, puddings, custards, cookies, even special drinks. Chocolate lovers may feel a bit ignored, but fruit, pudding, and cake lovers will be pleased by the 250 recipes in this book.

    4 out of 5 stars A One-Off, Otherwise Excellent.......2007-08-12

These peanut butter cookies are simply the best. Husband is a peanut butter cookie fiend. We've tried many recipes, and this one is the best. Katie's Orange Cookies are tasty. However, the Chocolate Ginger Cake is a disaster. The recipe requires one 9-inch round cake pan. I should have known there was a problem when the batter came up almost to the top of the pan. About 5 minutes into the baking we smelled smoke, took a peek and found that the batter had bubbled over and made a tremendous mess. This might work better in a 13 x 9-inch pan. But it's delicious! Perhaps we will try it again, in a larger pan. Otherwise, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of many amazing Moosewood books.......2007-03-26

The Moosewood cookbook collection continues to impress me. They are filled with delicious, easy to prepare, and most importantly, healthy recipes. Moosewood Restaruant Book of Desserts proves that sweets don't have to be loaded with fats and preservatives to taste great.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully Delicious ^.^.......2006-07-08

Unlike the other Moosewood cookbooks, this one doesn't even pretend to be healthy, and is filled with refreshingly decadent dessert recipes. But for the health conscious, there are also some healthy / light / low-fat / low-sugar recipes included -- and even those are spectacular.

From poached fruit... to angel food cake... to cowboy cookies... to rice pudding... to ice cream... this book has it all, and with multiple variations. Every thing you could possibly have a craving for is in this book. And to make it even tastier, it includes a full index and appendices with recipes grouped by type / season / occasion -- like "for Kids," "Low Fat," and even an entire list of what the book includes that is vegan friendly -- as well as a list of items you should keep on hand in your pantry, should the urge to bake strike. At the beginning of the different sections, there is some discussion of the history behind the class of desserts in the section, and also just little bits of rambling and random thoughts that tie it all together.

If you're looking for a dessert cookbook that will provide you with recipes for everything from a birthday cake, to a fancy dinner party, to an afternoon brunch -- this book is for you. If you just love sweet treats -- this book is for you! I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Mainstay in My Kitchen.......2005-10-29

I love this cookbook. The Moosewood Collective always puts out accessible, charming recipes with integrity and that makes this book totally user-friendly. It's the first book I turn to when I want a simple cookie recipe or when I want to pull a fancy layered cake together. The glossary is very helpful, as is their way of writing recipes to include prep and cooking time. My only complaint is that the cookie quantities always seem a little off, but I am willing to chalk that up to my shortcomings.
As a chocolate-lover, yes, I'd say we're not very well represented in this book. However, the chocolate recipes that are in the book ( Mocha layered cake, brownies, truffles, ganache) are solid and easy to adapt. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Delicacy Collides with Consistancy.......2005-08-13

Since 1999 I have used the Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts for holidays, birthdays, potlucks and recreational cooking with the same result everytime- Absolutely BEAUTIFUL desserts with flavors and textures consistantly worth 5+ stars. The one exception in the flavor department is perhaps the Red Devil Chocolate cake- a chocolate cake with beets- but every other recipe, from cookies to trifles to poundcakes to meringues is unique and impossible to stop eating once you've tasted the first bite.
The book is very well organized and the index and tips/recipe lists are user friendly and helpful. Its wide variety of recipes will accomodate even the most eclectic array of kitchen ingredients. To top it all off, cooking with this Moosewood book is just plain fun.
    Enjoy!!

            Book Description

There's no love quite like the love of a golden retriever. Anyone who has experienced this unique, wondrous relationship, or who simply enjoys a beautiful tale of the affection between people and their very special dogs, will fall in love with Arthur Vanderbilt's unforgettable memoir of a doting retriever named Amy and the seasons of joy she shared with those around her.

She had golden eyelashes, a fondness for Vermont cheddar, and a worn-out slipper she never tired of bringing to those she felt sure needed it. From the time she was an eight-week-old puppy, Amy considered herself in charge of the Vanderbilt family: making her round of bed checks each night, greeting long-absent members of her human pack with effusive affection, carefully bartering brand-new shoes for one well-chewed rubber frog.

Returning all the affection lavished on her--and then some--Amy led her family on marvelous outings from her seashore summer home: sun-filled sailing expeditions on the Bay, languorous beach walks and surf swims, moments of great pride at having uncovered and retrieved a dead, malodorous sand shark or having won the hearts of a gullible group of tourists. And anytime Amy had to be left behind during her family's evenings out, she would lapse into a sulk worthy of the very best Hollywood leading ladies.

Set on the outer shores of Cape Cod where Amy romped and rollicked, this tenderly told love story illustrates what a golden retriever can teach us about ourselves and the world we share. As her longtime human companion muses: She had taken us places we never would have gone and shown us things we never would have seen without her. Had we understood everything she showed us? Everything about fairness and faithfulness, about unconditional friendship and loyalty and love? "Sing praise" had been her message. "Bark and shout with joy! We are alive in the wonder of today."

5 out of 5 stars "Golden" book on Golden's.......2005-09-06

We just lost our Golden Reteiever of 10 years totally unexpected due to cancer. She ran off to die. We were able to find her and bury her in our backyard. "Amy", the Golden in the book is like our Chantal who loved the Gulf beaches. For any Golden owner, this is MUST have book to help with the loss of the best breed of dog I've ever encountered.

            5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2002-12-27

I laughed and cried when I read this book. Vanderbilt truly depicts life with a Golden. My son was devastated when we lost our twelve-year old Golden; I sent him this book so he could, like the author, reflect on the joy of having one of these incredible dogs in our life. The author truly touches the sacred moments we share with these beautiful creatures. A must read for Golden owners.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant and Moving Book!.......2001-01-10

I will admit right off the bat that the Chatham neighborhood that Amy and her human family inhabit is also my neighborhood. But I am sad to say that I never met Amy who sounded like a wonderful dog. All dogs are wonderful, in my book, and certainly in Arthur Vanderbilt's book "Golden Days." This is one of those tales where, although you know how it ends, you still weep at the end. Months later, certain scenes-- such as Amy's unusual love of bananas-- stick in the memory so that you feel you really knew Amy. "Golden Days" is a book about a golden retriever and it's also about those golden days of summer in a certain special place that Arthur Vanderbilt knows very well. I recommend this book for anyone who has ever cared for a dog. For anyone who has ever loved Cape Cod. In fact, I recommend this book, which is profoundly moving without being sappy, to everyone!

            5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, touching book.......2000-07-30

This is a beautiful, honest book about a family's love for their Golden Retriever. While the humans in the story are skillfully drawn, the central character is Amy--a loving and loved Golden Retriever. I cried at the end of the book. The lesson of the book is that a much loved dog can have a dramatic impact on a family's life--even if she isn't a search and rescue or therapy dog.

5 out of 5 stars Your only philosopher is your dog - Plato.......2000-04-25

You don't have to own a golden retriever to read and really enjoy this beautiful book. As a dog lover that I am, I read anything which has to do with dogs regardless of breed. This book is similar to "the dogs of our lives", a book which touches your heart and brings tears & laughter as you read it. Thank you Mr. Vanderbilt for sharing your memories with us.

                Book Description

The world now applauds the exquisite ornamental ceramics made in Japan in the late 19th century for export to Europe and America. They dazzle the public today as they originally did when introduced at the International Fairs in Philadelphia, London, Paris, Chicago, and St. Louis over a hundred years ago. Here the breathtaking beauty of intricate decoration on Satsuma, Imari, Kutani, Hirado and other ceramics is displayed in over 500 color photographs with a carefully researched text, descriptive captions, and information about the current world market for these pieces. Discoveries in new places have brought forth fresh examples for this book. Ceramics collectors worldwide will be able to compare the craftsmanship of these imaginative designs and learn how the international market both demanded and supported trade in their ornate decorations.

                  Book Description

Programs of ethical relativism notoriously face two great difficulties: 1) how can they account for our need to make ethical judgements about other groups and individuals with whom we come into conflict? and 2) how can they allow for us to criticize the group, set of desires, etc. to which our ethical norms are said to be relative? Integrity and Moral Relativism develops a moderate version of cultural relativism that can answer these questions. After examining and defending the notion of a "world-picture," and of incommensurable differences across world-pictures, the book brings its theoretical framework together with the history of anthropology to argue that a culture is indeed the appropriate expression of a world picture. It then draws on literary, philosophical and historical resources to illustrate the way in which Western society, specifically, contains traditions distinguishing legitimate cross-cultural judgment, and legitimate from illegitimate cultural self-criticism. As long as there is a language for these possibilities, an individual can see ethics as culturally based without compromising his or her integrity.

                        Book Description

In the 1940s and 1950s, long before historians fully accepted oral tradition as a source, Eve Ball (1890-1984) was taking down verbatim the accounts of Apache elders who had survived the army's campaigns against them in the last century. These oral histories offer new versions--from Warm Springs, Chiricahua, Mescalero, and Lipan Apache--of events previously known only through descriptions left by non-Indians.

A high school and college teacher, Ball moved to Ruidoso, New Mexico, in 1942. Her house on the edge of the Mescalero Apache Reservation was a stopping-off place for Apaches on the dusty walk into town. She quickly realized she was talking to the sons and daughters of Geronimo, Cochise, Victorio, and their warriors. After winning their confidence, Ball would ultimately interview sixty-seven people.

Here is the Apache side of the story as told to Eve Ball. Including accounts of Victorio's sister Lozen, a warrior and medicine woman who was the only unmarried woman allowed to ride with the men, as well as unflattering portrayals of Geronimo's actions while under attack, and Mescalero scorn for the horse thief Billy the Kid, this volume represents a significant new source on Apache history and lifeways.

"Sherry Robinson has resurrected Eve Ball's legacy of preserving Apache oral tradition. Her meticulous presentation of Eve's shorthand notes of her interviews with Apaches unearths a wealth of primary source material that Eve never shared with us. "Apache Voices is a must read!"--Louis Kraft, author of Gatewood & Geronimo

"Sherry Robinson has painstakingly gathered from Eve Ball's papers many unheard Apache voices, especially those of Apache women. This work is a genuine treasure trove. In the future, no one who writes about the Apaches or the conquest of Apacheria can ignore this collection."--Shirley A. Leckie, author of Angie Debo: Pioneering Historian

These oral histories recounted by Apache elders to historian Eve Ball during the 1940s and 50s offer new versions of events previously known only through descriptions left by non-Indians.
