Book Description

With her award-winning debut novel, Muder On Iditarod Trail, Sue Henry established herself as one of the most celebrated new mystery writers. In Termination Dust, her much-anticipated second Alex Jensen mystery, Sue Henry again seizes the rich history of Alaska and Canada's forgotten frontiers and delivers a fast-paced mystery with one of the most adventurous and charming detectives around.

The virgin landscape along the Yukon River has hardly changed since the gold rush began in 1897. Frostbiting winds slice the rugged terrain, and, like a shroud, the first dusting of snow covers the low hills. Braving thick snow on the Top of the World Highway—where one slip could mean a fall down thousands a cold-blooded killer. His only witness is Jim Hampton, a rugged canoeist whose vacation has abruptly ended. And Jensen's only clue is an 1898 journal—detailing an eerily similar murder—that Hampton discovered on the killer's path.

Set against nature's most beautiful, yet cruelest, elements, Termination Dust weaves together legend and reality in a tremendous display of imaginative talent and storytelling prowess.

4 out of 5 stars Blew me Away!.......2002-12-27

I couldnt put this book down. 2nd in Sue Henry's series set in Alaska. A canoeist finds a journal set 100 years in the past of a journey to find gold. He is set upon by the bad guys and the book takes off from there. Alex Jensen and a Canadian Mountie are called in to investigate and work hand in hand to solve this intricate but fascinating plot.

Sue Henry writes one good mystery with a little romance thrown in to the mix. I read this thru a New England snow storm and enjoyed it immensely.(The book; now the snow storm :))

5 out of 5 stars Past and present are interwoven.......2002-04-10

Sue Henry writes another winner in "Termination Dust", the second book of her Alex Jensen Mystery Series. Canoeist Jim Hampton is on a trip down the Yukon River when he discovers the bones and the journal of a prospecter, Addison Riser from the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. While pondering the question of what may have caused Riser's death, Hampton is attacked and left for dead himself. He escapes and is discovered by Detective Alex Jensen and Inspector Charles Delafosse who are investigating a stolen car ring and the murder of a prominent man. There is evidence to suggest that Hampton committed the murder and the two lawmen investigate that possibility. The story continues with the constant weaving of Riser's story from the 1800's with that of modern-day Hampton. The story includes lost treasure and a further murder. Henry makes the story rich and complex, yet manages to convincingly tie up all of the loose ends at the end. The reader is also treated to the rich background of the Yukon and a history lesson about the Gold Rush.

5 out of 5 stars A real pleasure to read.......2001-09-04

I particularly enjoyed this book, I think because of the interesting contrast between the present and the past. The author skillfully switches between the two stories, and she is adept at conveying both a sense of time and place. I've already finished Death Takes Passage, another one containing lots of interesting historical information, and I'm looking forward to more by Sue Henry. Thanks for taking me away!

5 out of 5 stars Gold fever just may grab you.......2000-05-27

Sue Henry's second book is every bit as good as Murder on the Iditarod Trail. Set this time in the Yukon, she weaves the story of an unfortunate gold prospector of 1898 into a modern murder mystery. While history doesn't exactly repeat itself, it certainly won't let the modern characters escape from what happened way back then.

Ms. Henry intersperses today's mystery with passages from the journal of Addison Harley Riser, whose journal and bones were found by Jim Hampton, an outdoorsman on his dream vacation. The vacation turns into a nightmare when he's suspected of killing a controversial ex-senator. Alaskan State Trooper Alex Jensen, detailed to assist RCMP Inspector Charles Delafosse, is not convinced of Hampton's guilt, and soon is also fascinated by Riser's journal. The crimes are awfully similar.

You will not be able to put this book down, so just get comfortable. It's another keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Great second story in a series.......1999-09-08

I read "Murder on the Iditirod Trail" on a Saturday and bought this book on Sunday. It is a great historical story of the Alaskan gold rush and is a good mystery.

Sue Henry has a new fan in me and I can't wait to get the rest of her books.

These books are well researched and get you absorbed in them very quickly. Great escapism and highly recommended!

    Product Description

It is said that when the first snow of early winter - the "termination dust" - starts to fall, it's time for visitors to leave Alaska's wonders behind. For some, it's already too late. Jim Hampton's Yukon vacation takes a turn for the worse when he discovers a prospector's diary from the 1800s. And it dies when the rugged outdoorsman is arrested for the gruesome slaying of a controversial ex-Senator. But Alex Jensen isn't convinced of Hampton's guilt. And the dedicated state trooper is ready to track the bitter truth through the treacherous snows of the Yukon wilderness - and in the pages of a mysterious, hundred-year-old journal, which describes crimes remarkably similar...and deadly. This, the second Alex Jensen mystery, follows MURDER ON THE IDITAROD TRAIL.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent writing.......2000-05-28

I've always liked Cecilia Tan's writing which is almost poetic at times. This little pamphlet collection of short stories focuses on BDSM, fantasy, and erotica with just a splash of horror for good measure. "Telepaths Don't Need Safewords" is self-explanatory: if you can read each other's minds, there's no need to establish a safe word! "Cat Scratch Fever" is a beautiful, haunting tale (no pun intended) of a rather interesting love match. And "Heart's Desire" tracks Cleo's attraction to and love for another's sub. All in all, this collection is beautifully written, entertaining, and downright erotic. Tan's skills shine throughout. I enjoyed reading this and am quite glad I ordered it.

          5 out of 5 stars A delightful read........2000-05-12

With less science fiction or fantasy elements than is usual in a Circlet Press book, this small collection of short erotica is nontheless very entertaining and arousing. Once more the stories cover several different orientations providing almost anyone with something to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Short, sweet, sexy science fiction anthology.......1997-09-21

This is a slim volume of short stories whichmerge the worlds of science fiction, erotica, and BDSM, using the best of all three. It does so without sacrificing the usual tropes of one or more genres. It's an excellent first introduction to Circlet Press (it has a price that's hard to beat). The characters are well-rounded within a short space of time, the plots are substantial and exist as more than a vehicle to bracket sex scenes. The stories got me aroused; they also evoked powerful emotions. I'd recommend _Telepaths Don't Need Safewords_ to anyone -- and have. I let a romance-reading friend, who never reads straight erotica or science fiction, read my copy and she wanted more!

In a time when people are entertaining in their own home more and more this is a great reference to have at hand. I purchased it when I joined Taste of Home Entertaining as a consultant. And now as I recruit new consultants and hold parties I can use books like this as consultant and hostess gifts. The recipes are mostly simple using ingredients that you can easily find in your grocery store.

For the person who likes to entertain, this book is great. Home Entertaining is a great way to meet people and build relationships. There is actually a new party plan company call Taste of Home Entertaining that launches in May. As a person who likes to entertain and make money, this is a great way to combine the two hobbies and get into the company at the ground level.

As one of the recipe testers, I really enjoyed being a part of putting this wonderful cookbook together. My friends loved receiving it as a gift and my mother even though she doesn't have big parties or dinners anymore enjoys sharing this cookbook with her friends. One of the things I like about it the most, is the many seafood recipes offered.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners.......2007-09-25

I've always enjoyed woodworking, so it seemed only natural to give wood carving a shot. This book definitely helped me to get started and has a good section on sharpening your knives. There are a handful of typos and a few captions that don't match the pictures, but that's ok. I would like to have seen a few more projects, but I'm sure the authors did not want to overwhelm the beginner carver. All in all, I would recommend this book to others.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate beginners guide to Wood Carving........1998-06-20

Hats off.......or in this case, boots off, to Larry Green!. The "First Projects for Wood Carvers" is a wish come true for beginners. Clear, step by step instructions for creating three seperate projects. The cowboy boot, Gandolf the Dog and the Nativity is wonderfully illustrated and so easy to carve. My daughter and I have spent many enjoyable hours creating these projects. I believe this book is a must for beginner and intermediate Wood Carvers.

                  Book Description

"Legal pluralism" denotes both the multiple social fields which produce partilly interacting norms and the state's recognition of the many sources of law which constitute its legislation. It advocates a break from traditional legal theory in favour of describing the law from a more sociological and anthropological perspective. The theory of legal pluralism proves a useful tool, offering a challenging avenue for the examination of socio-legal activities. Too often, however, the literature on legal pluralism has failed to place sufficient emphasis on its fundamental theoretical questions.

The result of a seminar held in Cairo in December 1996 with contributions by sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, legal theoreticians, and practising lawyers, Legal Pluralism in the Arab World represents the first comprehensive examination of this phenomenon. This collection of essays attempts to define the notion of legal pluralism from a sociological, anthropological, and theoretical perspective and highlights its connection with particular Arab societies and countries.

                    Book Description

Our lives are made rich by those who came before us. Like ingredients in a long-simmering soup, they flavor who we are and what we do. In this beautiful, haunting, and larger-than-life memoir, one woman shares with us the humor, heartbreak, and triumph of her Jewish ancestry, to comfort and strengthen us all, whatever our faith.

At home in her Pennsylvania kitchen, Joann Leonard makes soup. In her grandfather's pot, she improvises, using her great-grandmother's unwritten recipe. As she does, amid the fragrant steam rising from the pot comes a stream of memories, half-told tales, and departed ancestors asking that their stories be told.

And what stories they are: of the six strong Axelrood brothers and their families terrorized by Cossacks in their Eastern European village; of a man hiding twenty-eight days under a barn floor to avoid being murdered; of a tiny girl left with others for safety in the flight from savagery and lost for twelve long years; and of new lives made from old in America, "the Golden Land."

As Joann Leonard adds each story to her pot, she creates a rich and universal soup to nourish us all: the story of a woman putting together the fragmented pieces of her own life and recognizing the power of her own Jewish heritage. What she discovers within her cookpot are the extraordinary endurance, remarkable bravery, and lusty humor of her forebears and the joy of an undying legacy of faith that is the greatest gift she has been given--a gift she has been entrusted to pass along to her two adult sons. These pages invite us all to share in this life-giving food.

In a nation where most people's roots lie in faraway lands, The Soup Has Many Eyes is a rich, poetic, deeply satisfying testament to the importance of family bonds, spiritual insight, and--most of all--the miracle that happens when we invite the past into our lives.

                    5 out of 5 stars I can't say enough about this book.......2000-04-26

The story of a family, a heritage, my heritage, I was unable to put this book down once I opened it. She writes so well, she is so fluid and masterful with her words, the story had to be told. It is simply the story of how a family got here, and yet it speaks volumes about a time which is little known and hardly written about.

I loved this book. I reccomend buying it. If you are a history professor use it as your text book. If you would be truly multi-cultural then learn this story.

May it bring as much joy to you as it did to me.

This exquisite little book, The Soup Has Many Eyes, is a hybrid of history, mystery, proverb, and poetry. Most of all, it is a mother's memoir to her two sons, Josh and Jonny, as they embark upon their own journey in life - a journey that is both connected and disconnected with its heritage.

Perhaps a little too disconnected, or so the author, Joann Leonard, believes. In her narrative, Leonard attempts to fill in the spaces for her sons, to connect them to their past so that their present will have context. While much of the book narrates her family's struggles as they leave Russia amid the pogroms of the early 20th century to come to America, the "history" of the book serves as a backdrop for Leonard's musings about life and legacy. What do traditions mean? What do their voices say today? Can they serve her sons too, the children of a Jewish mother and a father who is the son of a Lutheran pastor? Leonard wonders (or laments?), "Did I tell them, did I tell them? Little things, forgotten. Big things, omitted. Things that, because I didn't know how to tell you, my hands and eyes tried to word." In The Soup Has Many Eyes, Leonard tells them.

And so much she tells them. Across time, Leonard spirits Gramma Chana back for an archetypical dialogue on her maternal doubts.

"`Gramma Chana, tell me,' I ask, `how do you know?'

                    `Know what, child?'

`What mothers are supposed to know?'

`Know? Achhh! What is there to know? You hoe your gratchkeh, the bread you knead until it feels just so, when comes the baby, you push. For this you need to know? Your heart, do you tell it to beat? Your breath, do you say "now in, now out"? So what's all this "know"?' . . . `Look at the men with their watery eyes, Joann. They squint at their books for so many years, they squint out all the color from their eyes. They clutch their foreheads with their hands ready to snatch the live thing inside that gnaws to get out. But always, there are more questions.'

`So what am I supposed to do, Gramma?'

`Do? Make the soup. That's what you do.'"

Ultimately, Joann's "answer" is that turgid alchemy of past and present that connects all the hope and fears of all generations going back to Eve.

"Josh and Jonny, do you ever remember us hugging you so hard and so long that you felt as if you couldn't breathe, as if it would never end? That's the hug of parents holding their child for all the parents in the world whose arms go empty. Parents whose children have been stolen from them by war, starvation, hatred, drugs, disease, despair. It is an embrace born out of guilt and gratitude that our child is here, though we are no more deserving. It is a fierce attempt to ring you with talisman and benediction."

Leonard's letter to her children is timeless because its taproot reaches down into the mystery of our dreams and memories. We live, love, work, and die to pass down our wisdom to our progeny. And why? Who can know? But The Soup Has Many Eyes describes the what and how if not the why and why not, and in Leonard's vivid images of her own history our collective consciousnesses meet.
