Book Description

As her myriad of fans can attest, USA Today bestselling author Mary Daheim creates wonderful mysteries peopled with marvelous characters as quirky as they are endearing. The Seattle Times says Daheim is “one of the brightest stars in our city’s literary constellation”—and the popularity of her irresistible Pacific Northwest crime series has swept across the nation. Now the unfaltering Emma Lord is back in her highly anticipated hardcover debut.

For a small town newspaper like The Alpine Advocate, a new play at the local community college is big news. Editor and publisher Emma Lord is duty-bound to attend opening night, but expects the amateur enterprise will serve only as a cure for insomnia. The play is dubbed “a black comedy,” but the only laughs Emma gets are from the bad acting and the wretched script. And while the turgid production makes Wagner’s Ring cycle seem like a vignette, the real drama begins just before the final curtain.

Hans Berenger, dean of students, wasn’t well known or well liked around Alpine, but the audience found his death scene genuinely convincing—until they realized he wasn’t acting. No one can say how or when the blanks in the prop gun were replaced with the real bullets that killed Berenger, but the list of suspects reads like a playbill of the cast and crew. They all had opportunity, access, and their own axes to grind with the thespically challenged dean.

Seeking the assistance of Vida Runkel, the Advocate’s redoubtable House and Home editor, Emma Lord vows to unravel a mystery that spirals out into unexpected places. As Emma sets the stage for the most likely suspect, she finds herself in a two-character scene whose next cue could make the resolute editor take a final—and permanent—bow.

1 out of 5 stars Strange.......2005-07-01

A fox terrier with a broken neck. A tortured donkey. A German Shepherd trained to kill. What was up with all this animal cruelty? Not only did it make me not like the book, but it soured me a bit on the whole series and on the author.

This series has long been the better of her two, but it's starting to lose steam. Vida needs to be killed off already, because she's got to be one of the most annoying characters around. Get off the fence with Milo, Emma. Cut down on all the
"colorful" characters because there's way too many and it's hard to keep track of them all.

Definitely not a good effort.

4 out of 5 stars another fun emma lord mystery.......2005-06-10

I always enjoy this series and this is one is no exception. however i fear there is nothing left to really explore with these characters in future now that Emma's long love is gone, her son a grown and a priest and her sidekick's life is not in turmoil. I think anyone would enjoy the series, but i think Ms Dahiem can now put Emma to bed and develop yet another fine character!

1 out of 5 stars Enough!.......2005-05-05

I have always enjoyed this writer's 2 series, but the last few I have had to struggle to get through them. They have turned into tons of words that mean nothing, no plot, little said or done.
It's sad that time was spent writing this book, as it seems all for nothing. Time to put both series to bed for the sake of the reading public.

4 out of 5 stars A cozy mystrey for a winter night.......2004-11-07

Starting a series in the middle always puts the reader at a disadvantage. The characters; their growth; and intimacies of the series are not fully known. Yet, Mary Daheim does a great job of bring in the new reader without boring the faithful one. In The Alpine Pursuit our heroine Emma Lord continues her slow recovery from the death of her beloved Tom Cavenaugh. The flash back scenes to Rome is the only fault I had with the book, but to be fair if I had not started in the middle of the series this may have worked wonderfully. Emma's life is moving on without a whole lot of input from her. Her new neighbor and dog are currently the biggest challenge in Emma's life. Life gets interesting when she attends The Alpine Council Dramatic Club latest performance as the editor and owner of the weekly Alpine Advocate. The original drama, written by her neighbor Density Parson, is an updated version of The Wizard of Oz. She sits through the play finding the climax when Dido (playing Toto) "piddles" on the stage. Yet, when the villain does not "recover" from his shooting for the curtain call, Emma is sure something is wrong. Of course, the small Washington town offers up more suspects than Zebra's have stripes. The reader is entertained as Emma wades through them to solve the crime. If you find "cozy" mysteries enjoyable this should be one you try.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and insightful mystery--a good one.......2004-05-30

When a college professor is killed during a student play, newspaper owner Emma Lord decides to get to the bottom of what might be an accident but could be murder. Nobody much liked Hans Berenger--but disagreements over sports policies or dating hardly seem like good enough reason for murder. Still, in a small town like Alpine, Washington, secrets are hard to keep. Emma suspects that a mysterious stranger is involved, but something seems missing--some clue that will put it all together.

Author Mary Daheim brings the town of Alpine to life. Mary is a complex and damaged character--still recovering from the death of a lover, uncertain whether about exploring her feelings toward the sheriff, angry with plenty of people all the time, and pursuing the truth about what might be murder both for her newspaper and to satisfy some need within herself that has nothing to do with the news. Daheim interjects humor, the petty disagreements that make life real, and small-town competitiveness and cooperation.

The mystery itself is cleverly constructed with enough clues to bring in the alert reader without being obvious. THE ALPINE PURSUIT is an enjoyable and engaging story that tugs the reader along with a subtle but powerfu current. This is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Daheim Does It Again.......2004-05-30

Once again local author Mary Daheim writes a mystery novel that keeps the reader guessing until the end. The use of believable characters bring the book alive impossible to put down.

Emma Lord is her usual intrepid self as she deals with not only the "usual" cast of characters, but solves the mystery of the death of the odious Hans over rare beef and adult beverages.

4 out of 5 stars We're Not In Kansas Anymore, Toto.......2004-05-27

Thanks to a donation from mean, nasty almost 100 years old, Thyra Rasmussen, the community college has a theatre. And they're determined to put on a play.

Emma Lord, owner and editor of the Alpine Advocate is going crazy as she sits in theatre, covering the rehearsal of the play, written by Destiny Parson's called the Outcast. Taking place in a diner and based on the Wizard of Oz it ends with a heartwarming, "Can't we all get along" speech. She just hopes it will be better on opening night than it was on rehearsal day.

It may not have been better, but it was more exciting. At the climax of the play, when Nat Cardenas (college president) playing the sheriff shoots the diner's cook Hans Berenger (dean of students at the college). Unfortunately, Hans doesn't get up for his curtain call.

Who would want to kill Hans? Just because no one liked him, didn't mean they would want him dead.

Emma starts investigating on her own. Was it Destiny? Emma may secretly hope it is, because ever since Destiny bought the house across the street from Emma, she makes a point of sending her dog across the street to do its duty on Emma's front lawn. Emma isn't even too upset when the dog ends up dead. Could it be the same killer?

What about Jim Medved the local veternarian? It was said that he and Hans got into a fight when Hans kicked his dog Dodo, (playing Toto). Or Rip Ridley - high school coach, who was turned down for a coaching job at college because Hans didn't think their college should be involved in anything but intramural sports. Or Rita Patricelli, who he had been dating.

Or maybe the bushy haired stranger that Roger Hibbert - Vida's grandson claims to have seen backstage.

With so many suspects, Emma has to work hard to not only to get Milo going, but to stay a jump ahead of that news scooper, Spencer Fleetwood and his radio station.

Highlights:

The obnoxious Roger - This kid has been in the series since he was about 8 and is a holy terror. He's now 16 and nearly shocks Vida into heart failure when he comes out in the play and his first line includes about three *F* words.

Ed Bronsky - who's also in the play, but spends the entire play, sitting at the counter eating. He misses the entire shooting, except he almost gets the second shot, which lodged in the counter a couple inches from his backside. (Emma and Milo don't know how it could have missed such a huge target).

Vida and Thyra Rasmussen getting into a shouting match in the Alpine office. (These two have a long time hatred, going back to Vida's mother and some squash). (see Alpine Kindred).

Carla Steinmetz Telliaferro's, demon child.

Lowlights:

Sympathy sex. This is what Emma is doing, because she feels sorry for Milo. I think Milo feels a lot more sorry for her.

Tom Cavanaugh - (See any of my previous review to get my opinion of this jerk. Emma's dead lover.)

A not very satisfactory ending. I didn't really believe who the killer was or why they did it.

Overall, this is still a great series. If you haven't read them, you should check out her bed & breakfast series, featuring Judith Flynn which is also fantastic. Mary Daheim is about the best writer in this genre.

4 out of 5 stars Death of a Dean.......2004-05-20

The Alpine Pursuit is a much better-written book than its predecessor, The Alpine Obituary. Emma Lord is still the editor of the local paper in the the small Washington town of Alpine. Under duress, she attends a local drama production by her unpleasant neighbor, Destiny Parsons. During the production, a shooting scene becomes reality and one of the actors, the Dean of Students at the local community college, is killed when the "blanks" in the stage-prop gun prove to be real. Emma has a hard time leaving the investigation in the hands of Milo, town sheriff and Emma's on-again off-again boyfriend. She does her own sleuthing and finds that many people disliked the murdered Dean and had a motive for killing him. Recurring themes of dogs and drugs eventually lead Emma to the identity of the killer. This is a good entry in the Emma Lord Mystery Series.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Of dogs and whores.......2001-06-20

"Hell Has No Limits" is a stunning novel by Chilean author Jose Donoso. The book has been translated from Spanish into an effective English by Suzanne Jill Levine. This is a grim, tragic story about the lives of the residents of the doomed town of El Olivo.

The story focuses on La Manuela, a drag queen who owns a brothel, and his/her daughter, Japonesita (the story of Japonesita's conception is told in a series of vivid flashbacks). As Donoso peels back the layers from these and other memorable characters, he reveals a twisted story of lust, homophobia, violence, sexual ambiguity, and shattered dreams. And always in the background are the whores of El Olvido and the sinister black dogs owned by the powerful Don Alonso.

Donoso's remarkable mastery of language (as translated by Levine) perfectly complements this gripping story. If you are a fan of Latin American fiction, or if you are interested in gender themes in literature, you won't want to miss this trip to "Hell."

3 out of 5 stars Gender ambiguity in Chile.......2000-03-30

One of the 100 Best Gay & Lesbian Novels, Donoso's book centers on the transvestite la Manuela and his/her daughter who together run a whorehouse. Donoso's crisp voice lends an intense atmosphere to this intriguing story about machismo versus sexual ambiguity. I am always drawn to foreign literature, and I highly recommend Donoso, who in some ways reminds me of Manuel Puig and his "Kiss of the Spider Woman".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, inspiring read.......2007-10-08

This book is so inspiring for those who want to try natural childbirth. I loved reading the women's birth stories and Ina May is a great writer, who covers the issues of natural childbirth and medical intervention in a clear and compelling manner.

        4 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2007-09-28

This is a collection of heartwarming stories of women and their partners who decided to make the birth process their own.

5 out of 5 stars drop your stereotypes!!!.......2007-09-20

this book was so helpful to me. i'm a first time mom who grew up with your basic "get to the hospital for the birth" kind of environment. This book was so amazingly helpful with furthering my instinct that "birth is not an emergency!!" It doesn't have to be a medical procedure! She gives you many reasons/ways to help make your birth as sucessful as possible, whether you give birth at home or in a hospital...without the aide of drugs and unnecessary surgeries/medical procedures. Womens bodies are more powerful then most people let on. An awesome read for ANY pregnant woman or her partner.

        5 out of 5 stars A happy discovery.......2007-09-19

I first read Ina May Gaskin's work in the seventies and was deeply inspired.Spiritual Midwifery. It was a delightful surprise to find this book which is even better.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for expectant parents.......2007-09-15

This book was helpful as we prepared for our second child. I wish I had read it before I gave birth the first time. The stories are encouraging. The book also contains good information that helped us make informed decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for first timer or a refresher for the experienced owner.......2006-02-22

This book has good guidelines and some good ideas. A little behind in some of the "new age" training. But worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars A very helpful book, especially for a novice........2005-09-26

This book might be under the level of someone who has spent a lot of time around dogs, but for the first time owner, it is great.

The author covers a lot of topics needed for a new puppy mom or dad. I especially recommend the sections on housebreaking vs. paper training. It also works because it doesn't make assumptions about your puppy. Some dogs are dominant and some dogs are meek, and the book is stronger because not only does it take this into account, it has a guide on determining what type of personality your puppy has.

I grew up around dogs, but never trained a new puppy myself, so this was my bible for the first few months with my shih-tzu. In fact, it was out so much that it has chew marks in the corner. So, while helpful as a guide, be prepared to work with your new family member as well.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for first time puppy owners.......2005-09-12

This book is extremly helpful in assisting the reader in choosing, training and living happily with your puppy.

2 out of 5 stars Good basic information, outdated training techniques.......2004-08-19

This book has a lot of useful information about puppy development and personality - but it recommends the choke-chain leash-correction training approach, which has been abandoned by many dog trainers. Setting up situations so the puppy gets it right and is then rewarded is much more humane than jerking the poor little one around.

            5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2001-04-11

Really loved this book. Covered just about everything you need to know.

                            Book Description

With one exception, this volume contains papers and commentaries originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the 2004-5 academic year. Of the seven colloquia that make up this volume, two deal with Plato while the rest are dedicated to Aristotle. The topics on Plato are almost exclusively political: (1) a reading of the Republic that places it within the genre of writings `On the Politeia, and (2) a discussion of the role of preambles in Plato's Laws. There is a wider range of topics on Aristotle, ranging from his views on the relationship between external goods and happiness, through his account of phantasia, and all the way to his theory of metaphor. In relation to Aristotle also, one colloquium provides a detailed analysis of his curious theory of the so-called `inner sense', while another raises the question as to whether he might be regarded as a particularist in the philosophy of action like some modern theorists. As usual for this series, most colloquia contain a paper and commentary which provide a lively exchange on these topics.

                              Book Description

This volume contains papers and commentaries originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the 2001-2 academic year. Four papers concern Platonic texts. Three explore Socratic piety, elenchos, and maieutic in Euthyphro, Meno, and Theaetetus respectively. More is involved, but distinguishing between Socrates and Plato, their ideas and methods, forms a common thread. The fourth paper casts a wider net in discussing the nature of life in Plato in relation to Homer and others. Two papers study topics in Aristotle, moral considerability in the discussion of friendship and the aporematic conception of inquiry. The last two papers bring in NeoPlatonists, exploring Augustine's appropriation of Platonic grades of virtue and Proclus's reconsideration of Aristotelian motion.

                                              Book Description

From the time he was three years old, in 1943, Joseph Iron Eye Dudley was raised by his grandparents on the Yankton Sioux Reservation. Their tiny weatherbeaten house, nestled in a bend of Choteau Creek on the rolling South Dakota prairie, is where he grew up, and this moving reminiscence recreates with warmth and candor a childhood poor in material goods but overflowing with spiritual wealth.
"Much has been written," says the author, "by and about Native American people who are active in political and social movements, and much has been said about the appalling conditions of reservation life. This book is about the common, quiet people who never make the headlines or find their names in print. They are the backbone of the reservations, the ones who pass on the values that make Native American what they are. This story of my grandparents reminds us that there is a spirit in people which enables them to rise above the potential devastation of poverty and racism into a life marked by humor and laughter, one that radiates love and kindness."

4 out of 5 stars A simple, yet heartwarming story.......2005-11-28

Choteau Creek: A Sioux Reminiscence by Joseph Iron Eye Dudley was an easy read, and I was almost turned off by the simple and straightforward style. However, in the end, it is what made the book so enchanting. There were no hidden agendas or questions left unanswered- just a simple story of a man's childhood filled with people everyone should be lucky enough to learn from. This is not to say the book did not deal with deep issues, just that the way they were presented was very easy to grasp. But then again, I would hope the love felt in this book was always this simple and wonderful.

                                              5 out of 5 stars SUPERB.......2003-08-08

This is a truly tremendous book! Among my personal list of favorites. I found this book quite by accident years ago in a local bookstore and it continues to impact me today. I recommend it wherever I go and have had my own teenage sons and other family members read it. It should be on high school and college reading lists. The style is simple yet heartfelt. The themes so meaningful yet rare in todays world. Themes such as real character, unselfishness, solid role models, tradition, and attachment to place are woven throughout the text. Read it!

5 out of 5 stars Warm, insightful and uplifting.......2000-10-29

I am reminded of a saying I once heard: People may come to dinner, but a true friend helps you wash the dishes. This book presents friends. I can picture Grandma as she tells stories of her childhood or humbly contemplates the meaning of the owl's call. She remains with me after the book is finished. This is a good book for those who need to see the beauty and small acts of kindness and generosity that are triumphant in the face of hardship.
