This is the third Faith Fairchild mystery that I've tried. I keep expecting something that just isn't there.

It seems that it takes too long for a plot to unravel in this series. Then the ending happens so quickly that the reader is left pulling all the loose ends together in a page or two.

Faith is not a very active sleuth either. She's kind of dry and often just happens to be there. Nancy Drew is much more of a determined crime solver than Faith.

I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone. I find it disappointing.

Ms Page has done it again! She draws you in and won't let go. I sit down with the intention of reading a few chapters and stop only when I've finished the book. I have enjoyed the entire Faith Fairchild series. This one was notable for a good murder mystery, as usual, and for getting to know the Fairchild family better.

Better Than The Past Few.......2006-08-13

This series had been getting rather annoying, with Faith becoming more and more unbearable. This one had far too many characters to keep straight, many of whom really weren't necessary, but they managed to make Faith more tolerable.

The murderer's identity was fairly easy to figure out, and there were parts where the book became muddled -- particularly when a chapter just jumped into something major, completely out of left field. But the family dynamic made it more interesting than the past few books, in which Faith just looks down her nose at everything.

The one thing I didn't understand was the relationship between Faith and Betsy -- I'd never had a hint in previous books that there was any problems between them, and suddenly they're at each others' throats as a plot device. That should've been tightened up in the previous books leading up to this one.

I have never written a review to Amazon before, but after reading the two previous reviews, I had to say something. Katherine Hall Page's books just keep getting better and better. I especially enjoyed the family dynamics in this one and no, I did not guess whodunit. I'm looking forward to whatever she cooks up next.

A mixed bag.......2005-05-15

Faith Fairchild is not looking forward to the family reunion which her father-in-law has planned at a ski resort in order to celebrate his birthday. As she tells her friends, she likes the Fairchilds but in "small doses". When she and her family arrive, things go downhill fast, as Faith discovers a dead body on the ski slopes. Tensions rise as Faith's sister-in-law has much different ideas about child-rearing than Faith does, and their families are sharing a cabin. When the resort's chef disappears, caterer Faith takes over and her vacation is essentially over. Another dead body shows up and no one knows who to trust. Author Page does a good job of portraying the difficult relationships which can occur when an extended family gets together for an long period of time. Her choice of a Vermont ski lodge as the setting of the book is also a good one. Her portrayals of the teenagers and the strange woman who lives in a "gingerbread house" in the middle of the woods are less believable. Also, the motive for murder is not hard to unravel and the ending is a muddle of information which is thrown at the reader in order to tie up all of the loose ends.

Greg Stolze is pure Gold.......2007-02-12

It is difficult to write good RPG fiction (I've got a shelf of Magic novels that attests to this): the author needs to showcase various elements of the RPG, including not just characters and locations but also different powers that the player characters can use. The author has to create interesting conflict and resolutions that nevertheless won't change the setting from the way it is sold to players. Greg Stolze took these limitations in stride and crafted a tale I simply could not put down.

The game system in this case is Vampire: the Requiem, the Chicago setting, which has certainly benefited from game fiction. Stolze has made the setting come alive for the players, subtly weaving in important game elements while maintaining a smooth narrative flow. The characters are much more complex than you normally see in game fiction, with both pro- and antagonists eliciting sympathy and revulsion.

I greatly enjoyed reading A HUNGER LIKE FIRE and dreaded the final pages, because I would be done. Fortunately, Greg Stolze has also written A MARRIAGE OF VIRTUE AND VICIOUSNESS, so if you find yourself sucked into Greg's world, you at least have another fix coming your way.

Oh My.......2006-11-24

I hadn't read a World of Darkness novel before this one. That being said I didn't expect much, a book based on an RPG, probably going to be forgettable and the only reason I was reading it in the first place was because I enjoy the setting of Vampire so much.

I think this book does justice to the wonderful New World of Darkness. I think Greg Stolze would do well to write outside the genre, because this book was remarkably enjoyable.

My first vampire novel..........2006-05-13

I am an avid reader of macabre literature but I had never read a Vampire novel before this one. I saw the cover and decided to give it a try. I am very happy I did. The story and characters were captivating. I am only casually familiar with the Vampire RPGs and found the entire underworld of the vampires very interesting, new and original. I will be a regular Vampire novel reader from now on.

Cool read.......2006-01-03

Okay this is a good series if you wanted to see a clan of different types of Vampires. Personally I think the t.v. series "Kindred the Embraced" was really cool. This series isn't as good as I would have imagined but it's a good for starters. The font is waaaaayyyy too small but the pages have this embroidery rim around it sorta like looking at a spellbook or something.

The story is about different characters that are in clans located in NYC. I was confused at times on which perspective I was reading from and I still only have a clear visual of Bruce and Persephone. I'm confused on who was from which clan and I think that should have been reemphasized throughout.

Bruce is one of the main characters I think he's a Nosferatu which sucks. (Not sure if all Nosferatu can shape change like Naked. they should have mentioned that. The only powers i saw a similarity in was Persephone, Bella, and the Prince, but I'm not sure what clan they're from.) Okay so get this it's a cool story and I think there are two other books after this one, but they gotta make the font bigger and make it an easier read. Oh Yeah and it was not nearly enough action. Gotta add some action to it or soem cool vampire power training or something. the book got boring at times. When I was reading this book i was thinking if this was a movie things would be cut out or more action, gore, suspense, would be added in.

A good restart.......2005-08-11

Other than the miniscule font, this was a great read. I like that the fiction has returned to accompany the RPG. Being an avid fan of the previous White Wolf system in my youth, I was a little disappointed that the whole system was being redone. I picked up this novel to test the waters, as I have often liked the fiction. I felt that the author was a great choice for the gritty feel of the subject matter. I am looking forward to reading the second and especially the third book by the same author.

This book provides a double-handful of background information on the Humans, Elves, Windlings and Ts'krang (I *KNOW* that's not spelt right). The cultural textures and the forces that shape these races are brought into focus allowing you to see the real difference between the races.

This book covers a fair bit to help play the Ork, Troll, Obsidimen or Dwarfs in Barsaive. The graphics are crips, the text is, for the most part, interesting, and the information provides a good, in-depth understanding of hte cultural forces that shape the psyche of these races inviduals.

My mother who is now 94 years old used this book in her kitchen for as long as I can remember. I grew up eating food prepared from the recipes in this book. I am a 64 year old man who now has to cook for him-self if he wants to eat Puerto Rican food. I recently bought this book as a replacement for the worn out copy I bought years ago to replace the copy my mother gave me when she got to old to cook anymore. I cook other kinds of foods too, but I would be lost without this book so I can prepare my favorite Puerto Rican dishes every once in a while.

A Lifesaver! Shelby knows her stuff!.......2006-01-21

I own twelve dogs, most of which are rescues and have a special set of needs in addition to the typical needs of dogs. Shelby's book has helped me help all of my dogs live a healthier, happier life. Her understanding of the needs of dogs, their natural, instinctive behaviors has enabled me to set up my home so that we all live in harmony . . . no dog fights, no destruction of property. Her training methods are kind and based on positive motivation. This is especially important for dogs that have a history of abuse and neglect. I even shared her book with the folks at my vet's office! Thank you Shelby!

Some really good advice.......2005-07-11

Within the first half hour of reading this book, I was able to apply a technique to our headstrong little puppy. She's smart and sometimes sweet, but very mouthy right now and very dominant. After performing a muzzle grab on her, as described by Ms. Marlo, she quit biting and started licking. It was like a miracle had occurred! Yeah, I've had to repeat the lesson a few times, but it seems that our little puppy is finally accepting that we're the pack leaders.

Ms. Marlo's other advice on training puppies and dogs also seems very sound. For example, it makes sense to me to use food as a motivator, at least at first, whereas other trainers say to use the dog's desire to please you as a motivator. I like her advice on using crates for housetraining and generally keeping your new pup out of trouble. Most of her tips on how to teach the basic commands seem right on. Even her suggestion that you use instructive commands instead of "no" all the time (eg, leave it, off, sit...) makes sense, although I find myself using "no" frequently.

I especially like her insights into dog behavior, based on their natural pack roles, and how you can use these insights to communicate with your dog her role in your pack.

I'm not sure I agree with everything she suggests, however. But I've read a number of books on dog training and dog behavior, and none agrees completely with another, and some disagree with each other vehemently. Folks, just read several sources and use your own common sense with your own situation. Be kind, be firm, and be consistent. I would suggest this book as one of several you should read.

I just got a American Pit Bull Terrier puppy as a gift from my husband. I've always wanted one, but my experiance in dog trainning is limited to their wild far off cousins. I've never gotten to train a domesticated dog before, and I was very nervous because of everything I've heard about this breed. This book is WONDERFUL!!! Bella is the sweetest dog I've ever met or had, she's just very stubborn (as terriers are) and Shelby just goes through the psychology of the pack and everything so simpily and easily. Anyone can read this book, and have it work for them.

After having red various books on dog training I came across this one. It is clear and precise, but above all it works! Ms. Marlo not only seems to have an instinct and understanding for dogs but also a great way of relating some of her experience and knowledge to others.

Our very difficult and extremely aggressive puppy has been transformed to a well behaved, respectful and almost housebroken dog within just a few days.....

Thorough and Excellent Resource.......2003-06-21

A friend sent us this book when we first got our puppy and we used the techniques from day 1. The book is well written and easy to read. The stories about what worked for her star clients made the book interesting and entertaining! Most of all what an amazing impact it has had on our dog! She is exceedingly well-behaved for a 10 month old puppy and just passed her AKC Canine Good Citizen Test on the first try. I credit Shelby's techniques for our success!

My father and I just got back from visiting The Nethercutt Museum. The book does a great job of bringing the museum home with you. If you can get to the museum you can pick up a copy of the book at the reception desk for [money]-a bargain.

Great Book for Great Cars.......2000-06-14

For the first time, all of the automobiles in the Jack Nethercutt Collection are pictured in one book! This book exhibits all the characteristics a book on automobiles should have. Using it's horizontal format to great advantage, photographer Dennis Adler displays all of the cars in all their glory. Mr. Adler understands his subjects and each photograph shows exactly what the viewer would wish to see. The text is short, concise, and highly accurate. Due to space limitations, there is little technical data. This is not missed. Also touched upon, are the Nethercutts' collection of mechanical musical instruments-- pianos and automotive mascots. This book has my highest recommendation and exhibits better photography and more taste than some books costing many times over.
