Inside the covert agency known only as Office 119, agents Renate Bachle and Lawton Caine are called upon to identify the groups responsible for the bloodshed. But the so-called "Black Christmas" attacks are nothing more than a smoke screen for a far more sinister conspiracy. At its heart are ruthless secret societies with blood ties that date back thousands of years, whose goals are nothing less than global domination.

Fantastic!.......2006-03-22
If you can read, you will enjoy this novel. What an amazing read. I can't wait for more. Some people should read books with lots and lots of pictures and skip the part of literary critic altogether.
disappointing.......2006-03-13
Luckily it's a very fast read as there are large sections of each page that you can skip to get the idea of what's going on.
I hate books that are written to be in a series as the author is always trying to forshadow events for the next book, instead of just telling a good story and letting it go.
I doubt that I care enough about the characters to follow them on another adventure.
Not what I expect from Rachel Lee.......2006-02-20
I have read many of Rachel Lee's books and she has been one of my favorite authors in the past. However, after reading Wildcard and now reading Crimson Code I can't believe she wrote them. First of all, there is confusion with all of the jumping from one era to another with little to explain why she is doing this other trying apparently to tie in some big religion mystery and conspiracy. It just confuses the whole story in my opinion. She then proceeds to call one of the top crimanls who has his own son killed, Theodore Morgan in Wildcard, Jonathan Morgan in Crimson Code. Then in Crimson Code, in the first few pages of the book she referrs to Renate's father's wife, Kirsten(Renate's mother) as a physician when describing his last moments after the church is bombed. Then at the back of the book where Renate is thinking about them, her mother is a housewife and teacher. I hate it when author's screw up their characters with name changes, eye and hair colors etc. and now what they worked at. Renate's eyes were icy gray in Wildcard, in Crimson Code they were icy blue. ARGHHHH!
Extremely disappointing.......2006-02-13
Had the plot not been marred with grammatical atrocities, The Crimson Code may very well have been a good book. However, I am extremely disappointed with a book of this quality ever making it to store shelves. I could not even bring myself to finish this extremely blase and boring piece of generic modern literature.
The Crimson Code.......2006-02-09
On Christmas day, a series of bombs set off around the world turn the day into one to be forever known as Black Christmas as thousands die. Renate Bachele is only one of many left in mourning, but she is one of the few who has what it takes to find out who perpetuated this atrocity. Little does she know that the terrorists are ones who are part of something that goes back to the days of Moses, misguided, fanatical idiot geniuses with no qualms about killing to further their heretical cause. With the world poised on the brink of a nuclear war, Renate and her compatriots race to stop an explosion that spans many levels.
*Here's the lastest Da Vinci Code copycat, embellished with the currently popular terrorist angle. However, this plot also manages to slam Moses as well as Christ, trying to meld all religions into one via a plot concocted by Moses and handed down to Christ, then to Mary Magdalene, then to her worshippers. Had the story simply focused on the action, stopping the terrorists, it would have been a fantastic, thrilling read. Muddying it with all the far out heresies turns it into gobbledy goop. *

the beasts of barakhai.......2003-04-30
In this action/fantasy book a young collage graduate by the name of Benton Collins is working in a university as a teacher's aid. While cleaning rat cages he unknowingly stumbles upon a whole other world a very unfamiliar one. Being late for thanksgiving and not eating all day, Benton Collins hungrily stumbles upon a rabbit in the woods. Oddly enough the creature isn't frightened by him. So he eats the helpless bunny difficultly while his stomach is full of guilt guards come and he later realizes in the world of Barakai. Humans are shape shifters and each animal turns in to a human. Ben is charged with murder and cannibalism and sentenced to hang. How will he get out of it? With some friends he meets on the way such as Falima the horse and Zylas the rat he finds it difficult to get back home and escape death but with the stone they all get rewarded. Watch the story unfold in this suspenseful story, The Beast of Barakai.
An exciting fantasy.......2001-08-08
Biology graduate student Benton Collins plans to leave his job at the lab and go to his girlfriend's house for Thanksgiving dinner. Just as he is about to depart, he sees a rat running loose and chases after it as it is probably part of a science experiment. He pursues the rodent into a dark and deserted storage closet but when he tries to find the missing rat, he becomes disoriented and wonders around for hours.
When he finally manages to leave the room, he finds himself in another world, more primitive than his own and one that is seemingly devoid of humans. He finds a rabbit and kills it for a meal when out of the forest come soldiers who throw him into a jail cell. The rat tells Benton his real name is Zylas and he is in the land of Barakhai where all humans not of royal blood shapeshift into animals for half the day. Benton is horrified that he actually ate a human and is terrified when he learns that the punishment for his crime is death. Zylas, who brought Benton into Barakhai for reasons of his own helps him escape and then their adventures really begins.
Unlike many books in a series, all the loose ends are tied up in the BEASTS of BARAKHAI yet this is only the first novel in what is a new series. It will be interesting to see what happens in further books and if Benton will be a part of it. There are no religious overtones in Mickey Zucker Reichert's latest triumph but fans of the Narnia tales will love this grand fantasy.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid's recommendations--6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly--for much of the current wave of obesity. At first this may read differently than any diet book, but Willett also makes a crucial, rarely mentioned point about this icon: "The thing to keep in mind about the USDA Pyramid is that it comes from the Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for promoting American agriculture, not from the agencies established to monitor and protect our health." It's no wonder that dairy products and American-grown grains such as wheat and corn figure so prominently in the USDA's recommendations.
Willett's own simple pyramid has several benefits over the traditional format. His information is up-to-date, and you won't find recommendations that come from special-interest groups. His ideas are nothing radical--if we eat more vegetables and complex carbohydrates (no, potatoes are not complex), emphasize healthy fats, and enjoy small amounts of a tremendous variety of food, we will be healthier. You'll find some surprises as well, such as doubts about the overall benefits of soy (unless you're willing to eat a pound and a half of tofu a day), and that nuts, with their "good" fat content, are a terrific snack. Relying on research rather than anecdotes, this is a solidly written nutritional guide that will show you the real story behind how food is digested, from the glycemic index for carbs to the wisdom of adding a multivitamin to your diet. Willett combines research with matter-of-fact language and a no-nonsense tone that turns academic studies into easily understandable suggestions for living. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Best guide to healthy eating.......2007-09-16
Willett's book isn't a fad diet book, but explains food and what it does for your body. I thought this book was very informative. It set some diet myths straight. There was a good overview of the food groups, the pros and cons of each, and what diseases or illnesses they helped or hurt. I thought the vitamin section was very good and surprisingly brief for that sort of thing.
Good common sense advice on nutrition.......2007-08-13
I have been saying almsot nothing but good about this book to my friends and family for the last week or two. I read this book once and then had to read it again because it is packed with such good common sense advice which is backed up with explinations about major studies confirming the advice.
Willet starts out with nothing less then suggesting major changes to the food guide pyrimid. The next chapters delve into the reasons for these changes. He explains in more depth about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, choosing carbs low on the glycemic index, the need for unsaturated fats in the diet, the importance of eating low fat protiens, and the need to eat many fruits and vegtables (not potatoes)daily. Much of the book seems to agree with the mediterranean diet and He refers a few times to the "seven countries study" done by Ancel Keys who was an early proponent of this diet. I was curious to see how the diet worked for Keys and found he lived to be 100 years old!
The book is a treasure and I will refer to it often in the future. One note, some of the recepies and ingredients in the back are difficult to prepare or hard to come by. But don't let this stop you from reading this book and making changes to your diet. It has inspired me to make changes to mine.
Authoritative advice without any gimmicks.......2007-08-05
There's no shortage of "diet" books out there, so how do you choose the right one? The truth is, it's difficult. I've come to the conclusion that almost any diet can "work" (at least in the short term), because what they do is force you to think about what you're eating and motivate you to exercise. However, where gimmick diets fail is in changing your lifestyle.
This book is an entirely different breed of "diet" books, because it's not really a diet book at all. What it is is conservative, non-controversial, and authoritative advice regarding healthy eating. Nothing in this book is going to go out of style any time soon.
There's no gimmick here; it's not going to tell you that you can eat sausage all day and be healthy. It's going to tell you what you already know; eat more greens, veggies, fish, fruit, and whole grains. It's going to tell you that there's no secret to losing wait; eat fewer calories and exercise more. It's going to tell you that the knowledge of the glycemic index/load is useful for controlling your appetite by moderating blood sugar. It's going to explain that there's a big difference between good fats and bad. It's going to tell you that the Mediterranean-style diet is well known for being one of the healthiest in the world (and why).
I've actually read a couple dozen books on healthy eating. All of the others had a few good things to say, but had some sort of gimmick to sell the book. This book is more or less the intersection of all those other books. In the end, this is the best of the bunch and absolutely the one to get if you only want to read one book on healthy eating.
However, this book may not be for everyone. Some people may be put off by the conservative nature of this book. If you have special health concerns that aren't addressed by mainstream knowledge, or if you are the type of person that prefers to live on the bleeding edge, you may need to look elsewhere.
A great way to understand your health.......2007-07-09
I very much enjoyed this book. I have spent my entire life on a diet but never understood the meaning behind diet rules and theories. This was a great read on nutrition and really helped me to understand the medical implications of the food choices we make. The author did a great job simplifying complex medical terms and provided a balanced thoughtful view on eating, drinking and being healthy.
great advice.......2007-06-25
very good guidelines and recipes are delicious. no FDA-approved diet pill is ever going to change our increasing waistlines, and no one will ever make it easy for us. the food industry is absolutely disgusting in US, from high fructose corn syrup to fake sweeteners. well, at least lets all be thankful we have enough food to keep us fat, but we also have the option of not following the herd like sheep, and actually make out own choices regarding what we eat.

Essential Eating is Essential Reading!!.......2007-08-24
Although this book is written for persons with general and specific health issues, I was interested in gaining knowledge of more healthful eating through better food choices which ultimately aid digestion. Who wouldn't want to have a healthy digestive system?? The insights of many different foods and combinations thereof can lead to better health through better digestion. I learned a great deal in this invaluable resource; the recipes I chose to make as my weekly favorites are fabulous! And to eat eggs w/ veggies for breakfast or french toast (made with sprouted bread) and 100% pure maple syrup?? Simply heaven!
Beautiful Tool For Healthful Eating.......2006-03-12
Janie Quinn has created a lovely, clear exposition of the work of Shelley Sommers, a well-known alternative nutritionist. The presentation is lucid, the recipes are excellent, and the pictures are Gourmet-magazine beautiful. Best of all, the system works, allowing you to eat all kinds of foods in non-dieting quantities and lose weight and/or regain health and balance at the same time. This is a terrific resource, and everyone I know who's looked at my copy has gotten excited and ordered one for themselves.
Quinn and Summers have it right! .......2005-12-19
I have Psoriatic Arthritis, and since I began to eat as Quinn and Summers suggest more than a year ago, I have found that I have learned how to control my Psoriatic Arthritis. The Super Cleanser, as Quinn calls it, truely has decreased or eliminated the pain I have felt in all my joints whereas Medical Dr's had no explaination or proactive steps for me to take to stay healthy. Now I know what foods to stay away from as well as feeling a level of energy that I haven't since I was...well, a long time ago. Wheat, Red Meat, and Sugar are all anathema to me, and they just don't play a role in this way to eat. If I hadn't found these books I would be in excrutiating pain, and unable to do the things I do without powerful perscriptions which I am loath to do.
If you eat food ever, this book is for you!.......2005-03-04
As in her other book, Essential Environments : Discover How to Create Healthy Living Spaces (Essential Living series), Jamie Quinn has gone above and beyond in creating a book that can really make a difference in people's lives. Too many diets and strategies take a lot of time and cost a lot of money, with very little for good results. Even worse, some may help you lose weight, but cause heart disease or sap your energy. This book will not do that - because it really helps you reach a balace in your eating life. Not only will you live a fuller life because of your healthier eating, you'll also have a fuller life because of the joy you can have in your eating. This book, Essential Eating, really is essential for the world today.
Easy to cook from, good food.......2004-06-11
I was going for the culinary adventure when I bought this, but that is not its primary raison d'etre. The book evolved from the author's personal journey to wellness, looking at a way of eating that is healthful rather than abusive. It is based largely on the methodology of Shelly Summers, a holistic nutritional counselor who believes that good eating habits can help conquer or at least ease the debilitating effects of everything from acne to AIDS.
Depending on the level of the body's "dis-ease," the author recommends various regimens. Each level has allowable foods and some to avoid. There is a surprising variety for each level. What drew me to the book, after seeing the vibrant author on local television, is the experimentation with a lot of ingredients I've only read about. Quinn prefers organic everything and exotica like sprouted grains and legumes, quinoa, kefir cheese and maple-based sweeteners. Her entrees are fish, poultry or vegetarian. Interestingly, she uses eggs and butter, but judiciously.
I've tried several recipes and all are easy to follow and produce good stuff. As I put the chicken hash on the table, I thought, nooo, too simple, will taste like ground chicken "helper," but in fact it had depth of flavor. I am skeptical about using butter, but the little called in the green quinoa really set it off. Since I do not live in an urbane area, I had to go out on the internet to dig up the ingredients not found at local health food stores. I'm still looking for sources of sprouted seed flour, kefir cheese and affordable maple sugar. Until I do, I'll use reasonable substitutes.
Book Description
One Important Reason for the success of the human/dog relationship is the dog's ability to adapt to human environments and requirements. Housetraining is a prime example, but when humans "humanize" housetraining, points out the Evans Guide, the result is havoc. Now, for all puppies and older dogs and their owners, celebrated dog trainer Job Michael Evans presents a sensible, effective approach to do the job once, fast and right. The author's Access system is a powerful tool that gets the results you want. Learn how to give a "correction with a connection" so Rascal knows his mistake and not to repeat it. The support you need to succeed, in the form of handy schedules, summary sheets, photos and diagrams are all included. There are also important, special chapters for trainers, breeders, pet store operators and shelter personnel to help clients with housetraining. With understanding and humor, Job Michael Evans guides you through the housetraining process to move you and your dog to a lasting partnershipthe human/dog relationship as it was meant to be.
Customer Reviews:
The BEST.......2006-03-31
If you follow this method, it's flawless. I've recommended this book to no less than 25 people, and no one has said it doesn't work. It's short, to the point, and if you consistantly follow it, you will have a housetrained dog in no time.
Outdated techniques.......2006-03-20
While there are some good tips in this book, I find most of the training methods to be outdated. The conventional wisdom these days is that positive reinforcement, not physical discipline, is the most effective dog training method. I would agree with today's conventional wisdom. There are many more up to date books on the subject of canine house training available today. No need to spend your money on this one.
Most effective house-training book I've seen.......2001-09-13
Clearest, easiest, most effective house-training book I've seen. I had a lot of trouble house-training my dog: it was my first dog, and a shelter puppy, plus I had a roommate trying to housetrain a dog of his own and we didn't see eye-to-eye on how to do housetraining. Difficult situation: it dragged on for months, with ruined carpets etc. I picked up this book, and I swear resolved the situation very quickly after that. Good stuff.
This book should go home with EVERY new puppy!!.......2001-03-21
Of all the dog housebreaking books on the market, this one is far and away one of the best. It is written in Job Michael Evans' usual manner...intelligent, without boring the first-time dog owner with technical jargon; lighthearted and funny (and we need all the humor we can get when housebreaking!); and best of all...he realizes that REAL people with JOBS buy puppies!!
Some authors expect the average dog owner to put their pup out every two or three hours - and suggest that you're a failure as an owner if you don't!!! When I was teaching dog training classes, this book was 'required reading'. My dogs are usually housebroken in about 2 weeks with his methods.
Start with a healthy puppy from a responsible, caring breeder, add this book and a great Puppy Kindergarten trainer...and you'll get through the rough parts of puppy raising with minimal stress - and minimal damage to your carpets!! :-)
I own, exhibit and occasionally breed Rhodesian Ridgebacks - and I send this book home with every puppy-buyer a few weeks before the puppy goes it's new home.
wonderful, thought provoking book.......1999-05-09
Not only does this book explain how to train your dog, it explains WHY you should do it this way. After reading this book I thought about every "untrainable" dog I have known and could see the mistakes that the owners had made in their attempts to train them. We are getting a new puppy soon, and am delighted to have this information to guide me.

Customer Reviews:
Research without method.......2000-07-15
Serious gun collecting, which involves knowledge of the objects in addition to mere possession of them, often involves some research on the identity of guns, unknown to the collector, or of a known type, but in details differing from standard. This research quite often comes to interpreting the different marks and stamps found on most guns. A reference work on gun marks is, therefore, of great use to collectors, provided that it is correct in details, easy to use and fairly well updated.
When purchasing "The Official Guide to Gunmarks (3rd. ed.)", this is what I expected to find, but I must admit that I have been, at least in part, disappointed.
This work is divided into many different chapters, listing trade names, trade marks etc. I believe that most buyers are mainly interested in the "Gun Marks" sector, with illustrations of various gun marks, the understanding and interpretation of which are essential to establish the identity of an unknown gun or the attribution of guns to a certain period, a country, an army etc. Unfortunately, less than half of the book's 367 pages are dedicated to this subject, while the rest of the space is used for listing brand names (useful, as these are often found on the guns), Nazi production codes, (not so useful, as many of the codes listed have very little or nothing to do with gun marks. As comprehensive litterature on this subject already exists elsewhere, I consider this section as merely waste of space.)
As many of the illustrations are very coarsely made, and in quite a few cases are actually inaccurate, I should consider the job of completing (many very wellknown marks, which collectors see every day, are missing), updating and refining the illustrations, as a much more urgent task for the author, than filling the pages with irrelevant information on e.g. "Curios or Relics"-listings, which are readily available from the B.ATF, or "Assault Weapons"-legislation text, which actually should not fall within the scope of this book at all, judging strictly from the title.
The sub-division of different kinds of marks, like "crowns" or "birds", also appears to be rather haphazard, which makes it quite difficult to find the mark you try to identify, without having to glance through the complete section, as many marks are not listed under the section where you should expect to find them.
Some attention to this (and my other comments above) could make the next edition of this book truly valuable to collectors, as (to my knowledge) no complete and comprehensive work on this interesting subject exists today. Unfortunately, the current edition strikes me as more confusing than informative.
Guide to Gunmarks is right on target.......2000-06-05
The Official Guide to Gunmarks is a most valuable reference for identifying all of those (often strange) marks stamped into various parts of firearms. This tome may not include EVERY mark that one might run across, but it is certainly very comprehensive. This book is a "must have" for any serious firearms collector.

Book Description
This volume deals with the song of wisdom in Job 28 as it is analysed by scholars in biblical exegesis, Hebrew lexicography and cognitive linguistics. A colloquium (organised by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Amsterdam 2002) of experts in these three disciplines showed that exploring the common ground is worthwhile. The proceedings of this conference presented here, under the title `Job 28. Cognition in Context' not only indicate the possibilities of Hebrew semantics and cognitive approaches to the Hebrew Bible but rather severely expose the unsatisfactory simplicity with which the bifurcation of so-called "historical" and "literary" approaches to or readings of the biblical text is still regarded in the exegetical disciplines.

"Baba" is "Papa" in Chinese, and Belle Yang's Baba, Joseph Yang, was born in Manchuria in 1928. Belle set out to preserve her father's memories of coming of age in Northern China through painting and writing. The result is this illustrated odyssey of the fourth of seven children in the House of Yang, a prominent Manchurian family, whose experiences of the Japanese occupation, the Russian onslaught upon northeastern China, and the ensuing Chinese civil war make for a spellbinding tale.
Book Description
Baba ("papa" in Chinese) recounts the colorful childhood tales of Yang's father, who grew up at a time of great political and social upheaval in China. Behind the protective walls of the House of Yang, Baba is immersed in a world of the legends and colorful characters of village life. Yang's beautiful watercolors accompany each story and create "an astonishing personal vision" (Kirkus Reviews, pointer). Preface by Amy Tan; illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A visual treat and mind candy.......2002-08-12
This is a great book. I came across this book by accident and loved it. The book is written as a series of short stories from the perspective a small boy growing up in 1930's China. Yang provides the reader will a taste of life in China during the 1930's.
The author painted the pictures in the book. The paintings add zest. Very talented.
A Fresh Voice.......2002-07-29
The book garnered starred reviews in both the "Library Journal" and "Kirkus Review" and so I had to read it for myself. The author writes as well as she paints. A fresh voice. It is one of those rare creations that is hard to place. Is it fiction or non-fiction? History or literature? I'd say both. It is a fresh look at China from the eyes of country folks, those who disappeared without a murmur in the chaos of war. I would recommend it to lovers of literature and lovers of history.
I just didn't like it.......2002-04-14
I read the description & bought 2 copies - one for my father-in-law and one for me. It may have encouraged him to finally start writing down some family stories but he made no comment about the book which means he didn't like it. I could not get into my copy although I have tried several times -- and I usually finish every book I start. I did not think the writing was that good & it did not get my interest.
Beautiful writing! Moving Paintings!.......2000-03-26
I was really drawn to Ms. Yang's quiet and yet affecting way of conveying her experience in China.
When I saw her classical art in the book, I want to buy them! Can anyone let me know where I can possibly own her paintings to put in my house! I am sure when my father comes visit me from SIngapore, he will be pleased to see such wonderful work too. Thank you
A wonderful retrospective of rural Manchurian-Chinese life.......1999-06-05
Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated book about the lives of the Chinese in the Manchurian frontier land before the Communist revolution. This is a Chinese rural life set in the abundance of the newly opened Manchuria, a time and place very different from the rest of land hungry China. The lives of these pioneers reminds one of those of the American pioneers of the Midwest prairies. The people in the story are brought to life as they make a living in this land of freezing winters, wolves and endless landscapes.
Product Description
Baba is "Papa" in Chinese, and this particular Baba is Joseph Yang, born in Manchuria in 1928. His daughter, Belle, a writer and visual artist who was born in Taiwan but whose "spiritual address is so much in the West," set out to paint and to write - and thereby to preserve for posterity - Baba's memories of his coming-of-age in northern China in the 1930s and 1940s. The result is the illustrated odyssey of the fourth of seven children in the House of Yang, a prominent Manchurian family, whose experience of the Japanese occupation, the Russian onslaught upon northeastern China, and the ensuing Chinese civil war makes for a spellbinding tale. Throughout his journey, Baba's life is informed and influenced by characters both human and spiritual: the benevolent goddess Guanyin, the mystical Scholar Wang, and the vague and ominously prophetic Ma Po-po: "In one hundred days, I will have fully become..." In prose as vibrant as the chartreuse and vermilion of her paintings, Belle Yang has performed no less than a miracle of translation - one which compelled Amy Tan, in her preface to Baba, to write: "Belle Yang is an American writer who writes in English and thinks in Chinese. Her writing feels Chinese... It is as though we, the readers of English, can now miraculously read Chinese."
