Customer Reviews:
Such a sweet story.......2007-09-08
Much of the book was just like the movie and was a quick read. I hated for it to end! The book quality was a clothbound hard back book and was nicely bound. I will treasure the book as part of my collection.
Saw the movie, had to read the book.......2007-05-22
I loved the movie with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney. After seeing it I knew I wanted to read the book. The book is an easy read and very enjoyable. It answered some questions that the movie didn't. I can't say I like the movie better than the book or visa versa. But the movie and the book together are fabulous.
fun book.......2007-03-25
Enjoyed it. Not outdated at all. It's nice to read about a woman who stands up for herself when being pushed around by societal mores and relatives, etc., especially considering the time period. This cloth-bound copy is very sturdy. I only give my absolute favorite books five stars, so four is high on my scale.
Have searched for years for this book.......2007-01-09
My public library had discarded this book years ago and I had hunted through every used and rare bookstore for miles trying to find it. The book is somewhat different than the movie, but both are equally good. I admit finding myself listening to the CD of the movie soundtrack while reading. Truly one of the most classic romances written in the 20th Century.
As paranormal romances go, this is also a classic on a par with What Dreams May Come. If you loved reading or watching Portrait of Jennie, The Two Worlds of Jennie Logan, The Love Letter (film, Campbell Scott, Jennifer Jason Leigh) then you'll love reading this book. I've been carrying with me in my briefcase to read snippets of it every chance I get.
A Great Beach Read.......2006-05-30
I took this book on a beach vacation and finished it in two days. It reads quickly, with some humor to make it a fun, lighthearted book. You cannot help but like the characters, and the setting. If you enjoyed the movie, the book is worth your time. (The movie follows the book very closely, with the exception that the Captain's voice is only in Mrs. Muir's mind, he is never visible to her in the book. In the movie, the Captain is very much visible to Mrs. Muir. This works well on the screen, but the book version of the Captain is just as effective).
Book Description
The Ghost and Mrs Muir tells the story of a young widow (Gene Tierney) who rents an old house by the sea that is haunted by the ghost of a sea captain (Rex Harrison). Despite all the trappings of a gothic tale, the film is in fact an ironic comedy, in which the ghost and the widow play out their relationship as a battle of wits.
The film was not a huge success when first released in America in 1947, though it achieved an afterlife as a TV series in the 1960s. But in Europe the film soon acquired a reputation as an exemplary product of the Hollywood system. Joseph Mankiewicz, its director, was a firm advocate of the idea of the auteur, by which he meant that the director must also be the author of the script. For Mankiewicz, cinema was above all dialogue.
But as Frieda Grafe shows in her attentive and evocative account, there are many voices speaking in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. She traces the influence of Darryl Zanuck, the forceful head of 20th Century-Fox, the screenwriter Philip Dunne, R.A. Dick, the author of the novel on which the film was based, Bernard Herrmann, who composed its wonderful music, and the particular slant given to the film by the casting of Tierney and Harrison.

great book!.......2003-02-23
This is a must for any fan of "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." it contains great photos and writng about the film. It'w ell worth the price. The photos are great and there is a generous portion of them. A romantic and eternal story of love.

Not what you would think.......2002-02-21
This book is not what you might think it is. It says it's based on the classic tv show The Ghost and Mrs. Muir but once you start to read it, you do not have to get past the first page, you realize it is nothing like the beloved program.
This book is a story about some people in New England who just happen to have the same names as the tv characters. They don't resemble them in any other manner, especially characterization. Fanfiction for this show, beats this book 100%
If you read it just for the story, it is okay. The plot is kind of a tired one but if you have nothing else to do......
Ghost and Mrs. Muir.......2000-02-27
This was not a well written book at all, whether you're a fan of GAMM or not. Your time would be better spent reading the many fan fictions based on this show at various websites.
The characterizations had none of the flavor of those on the show, and were virtually unrecognizable. I have to doubt if the author ever even watched the show at all.
I was hoping to like this book, but was sadly disappointed. As the other reviewer of this book noted, the only likeness to the show were the names, and not even all of those were right.
Not for die hard fans of the tv show.......1999-05-23
A rather interesting book but it is a cross between the tv show itself and Murder She Wrote. The only resemblence betweeen itself and the tv show are the names of the characters(excluding the dog!). Rather shocking and unnerving but is interesting to read none the less

URSUN'S TEETH NOT AS GOOD AS AMBASSADOR!.......2004-05-21
This 2nd half of this story came off not as strongly written as The Ambassador. It was still entertaining, but the final battle that was built up, came much too late in the novel, and was finished just as fast.
The mutated monsters and god-like beasts were cool, however. But I felt this could have been better.
Book Description
Toddlers can drive you bonkers…so adorable and fun one minute…so stubborn and demanding the next! Yet, as unbelievable as it sounds, there is a way to turn the daily stream of “nos” and “don’ts” into “yeses” and hugs…if you know how to speak your toddler’s language. In one of the most useful advances in parenting techniques of the past twenty-five years, Dr. Karp reveals that toddlers, with their immature brains and stormy outbursts, should be thought of not as pint-size people but as pintsize…cavemen.
Having noticed that the usual techniques often failed to calm crying toddlers, Dr. Karp
discovered that the key to effective communication was to speak to them in their own primitive language. When he did, suddenly he was able to soothe their outbursts almost every time! This amazing success led him to the realization that children between the ages of one and four go through four stages of “evolutionary” growth, each linked to the development of the brain, and each echoing a step in prehistoric humankind’s journey to civilization:
• The “Charming Chimp-Child” (12 to 18 months): Wobbles around on two legs, grabs everything in reach, plays a nonstop game of “monkey see monkey do.”
• The “Knee-High Neanderthal” (18 to 24 months): Strong-willed, fun-loving, messy, with a vocabulary of about thirty words, the favorites being “no” and “mine.”
• The “Clever Caveman” (24 to 36 months):
Just beginning to learn how to share, make friends, take turns, and use the potty.
• The “Versatile Villager” (36 to 48 months): Loves to tell stories, sing songs and dance, while trying hard to behave.
To speak to these children, Dr. Karp has developed two extraordinarily effective techniques:
1) The “fast food” rule — restating what your child has said to make sure you got it right;
2) The four-step rule — using gesture, repetition, simplicity, and tone to help your
irate Stone-Ager be happy again.
Once you’ve mastered “toddler-ese,” you will be ready to apply behavioral techniques specific to each stage of your child’s development, such as teaching patience and calm, doing time-outs (and time-ins), praise through “gossiping,” and many other strategies. Then all the major challenges of the toddler years — including separation anxiety, sibling rivalry, toilet training, night fears, sleep problems, picky eating, biting and hitting, medicine taking — can be handled in a way that will make your toddler feel understood. The result: fewer tantrums, less yelling, and, best of all, more happy, loving time for you and your child.
From the Hardcover edition.

Love it.......2007-09-11
I bought this book because Dr. Karp's book The Happest baby on the Block saved my sanity. His advise really works, and helped me feel as if I had some control, and ways to cope with an unpredictable child. Even if only half of his advise works for your child it is worth it. Good luck.
Terrible book.......2007-09-06
Here is the book, in summary:
Your child acts like a caveman and pretty much is a cave man in every way. You act like a cave man too so that he understands you and he is happy.
Read the above paragraph 500 times. The end.
Good But Not Great!.......2007-09-02
I was expecting the amazing tips and tricks that Happiest Baby on the Block offered. I liked it but it wasn't as good as his previous book.
not the baby book..........2007-08-09
I loved Karp's baby book! Could not have made it through the first few months w/out it. Do NOT like this one though. I recommend 123 Magic 2-12yr old.
Very helpful with my 2-year old! .......2007-07-12
Dr. Karp provided specific examples with direct guidance about how to respond to challenging behavior. I tried the "fast food" response and it worked. I would skip to Chapters 8 & 9 if I didn't have enough time to read the entire book. These chapters were the most helpful.

Cute Book!.......2006-02-02
This book is humorous and cute- if you're looking for a book that will teach you about Goldens this isn't useful- but it has nice pictures with little captions underneath that will make you laugh. I loved it!
Also, it is very small- only about 5 inches square and only about 60 pages- so don't expect a large book!

This is a funny book for any golden owner!! It tells jobs goldens can do around the house that they really can!! Like my favorite is the "minor garment alterations" as my two goldens eat socks, shoes, scrunchies, towels and anything they can find!!! A book to remember and keep!!!

I borrowed a copy of this book from our library system and found it to be touching and filled with humor. It brought back many fond memories of my old friend and our rich life together.
I plan to get a copy for my library and to give a couple to friends who also share a love for this breed.

If you are an avid seeker of bargains and/ or collector of treasures, you need this book! After browsing through this book, I remembered seeing similar lamps at recent antique shows. I was not familiar with the lamps but heard someone comment on their future value. This book was most informative and an easy reference. The photos in the book are excellent.

Book Description
As a five-year-old in Home-wood, Alabama, Shelley Stewart watched his father kill his mother with an axe. Two years later, Stewart escaped the care of abusive relatives. A stint in the army led to electroshock treatments for trying to integrate whites-only dances. But despite numerous setbacks, he never gave up his will to succeed. Laying the foundation for a 50-year career in broadcasting, Stewart reached out to JimCrow Alabama with music to integrate his audience, helped launch the careers of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Gladys Knight, and helped publicize the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A remarkable witness to and participant in the momentous social changes of the last four decades, Stewart delivers a courageous memoir that readers won't soon forget.
Customer Reviews:
An Inspiration!.......2005-01-18
This book was truly an inspiration to me! I read it in only two days because I just could not put it down! I'm saddened to read another review that gave a negative image of Mr. Stewart. Having met him and worked with him, I have only seen positivity and generosity in him. Anyone who thinks that they can use their past as an excuse not to go forward should read this book. You cannot dwell on the past, and Mr. Stewart is a great testimony! This book is a must read for all ages!
An Inspiration to me !.......2005-01-03
Wow, I started reading on a December 12th and finished on January 2nd. Not because the book was not intresting, but for the simple fact I started telling my husband about the book and he began to read it and finished it in two days then he handed it to my mother law who in between prepring the Christmas feast could not put it down. I was lucky to finally get my hands on it on News Years day to finish the last three chapters . This book tuged at my heart strings in so many ways. A picture of Shelly should be in the dictionary next to the word Preserveriance and Determination. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Stewart and he is every bit of exciting, intelligent, hardworking, and personable as he appears in his book. Thank you Shelly for sharing your journey with the world, thank your for chronlizing a piece of history for all of the free world to appreciate.
Not the man he appears to be........2003-06-14
Shelley Stewart is absolutely NOT the man he appears to be. As a member of his family, I have seen his astonishing greed and selfishness towards the family he supposedly cares so much about. He has poor relationships with his son, and most of his other children. He cares only for himself, and offers no help his family. Take it from me; buy another book. Large portions of this book were admitted to be largely fictional.
you think you had a bad childhood?.......2002-12-01
you think you had a bad childhood? Shelly Stewart had one that is hard to believe. This is shown in this wonderful book, and how he overcame this handicap. He is now a successful businessman and is helping other people. This memoir reads like a novel, I could not put it down.
Unforgettable.......2002-08-18
I don't know how to start this, but I just got to write something about this book. If this book don't affect you to the point of sadness or tears, I don't know what to say for you. This book was nothing short of a miracle. I have encountered people with similar backgrounds and they just get by, and expect you to feel sorry for them. With Mr.Stewart, you just want to applaud him. The fact that their father would kill his wife in front of his children with an axe and let her fall out the window onto a tree with not so much as remorse, well, I had no sympathy,no nothing for him, and like his sons, I felt nothing for him or that second wife or those aunts for that matter. What kind of woman feeds fried rat to children? Where is your humanity, where is your heart? what kind of man tells his son(a child) such heartless things, and allow such treatment that your own children leave you before puberty? what kind of woman mentally and physically break down a child just so the white man doesn't? Yet, it was a white man that took him in his own family when you didn't want to be bothered? This is just too much, and then here comes the military giving shock treatments just because you speak up for yourself and feel that despite your early life you should just go on? What kind of stuff is that? This is what happens in Shelley Stewart's life. He went through so much abuse, so much living from one pillar to post,so much betrayal(like the high school principal who wouldn't give him a chance at a scholarship despite the fact that he had the grades and know how to do so) yet despite all of that, he STILL makes something out of himself and is one of Birmingham's living legends..Folks, we hear of how we can't do this because of our background, childhood, someone said this or whatever, I say if this man can go through the stuff he went through and still live to tell the story, and is a man(and we know that men just keep their feelings to themselves and all),well, he deserves my salute, and I say GET THIS BOOK. You may want to scream, you may want to cry(Lord knows I did), but if the best thing you can do with this book is give it to some person who needs a lift in the right direction and say,"Read this",perhaps, we have made the life of one person better in order for him to make a contribution to this world.I reccommend this book highly, but, if you are faint at heart and always need a kleenex(which you may need), you have been warned. This ain't no pretty story. It's gritty, and if I could get this man down to my neck of the woods in lower Alabama, I would. Matter of fact, the book deserves 10 plus stars.

Book Description
In this new edition of Joyce Storey's autobiography, the previous three editions are amalgamated and the complete story of her life is told. Born near Bristol in 1917, Joyce began her autobiography at age 66. The House in South Road follows her pre-war life in Bristol, an era of chocolate factories and glamorous silent movies. With a brilliant eye for the comic in the tragic, Joyce unfolds her experiences at school, her first job, her first love, and a mismatched marriage. During the war Joyce is a mother of two and her RAF husband is rarely on leave, and after the war Joyce begins to enjoy the luxury of a prefab house, first holidays, and the growing independence of her four children, but suffers a breakdown in her marriage and her husband's final illness. With humor and intelligence, Joyce Storey charts a good deal of the 20th Century.
Customer Reviews:
A striking and important read........2005-02-16
I enjoyed this book immensley, it tells the story of a working class woman's life from Bristol, England; from her childhood to retirement and beyond. It is the author's own story and it is both richly illustrated and candid. Most striking is it's social representation of both working class British life, the role of Women and the huge changes they faced during the course of the 20th century.
Joyce, the main character, is spirited and unable to find her true purpose. Her life follows a standard expected pattern and she beautifully tells of the both the joys and agonies of her limited choices.
A spirited woman is centre stage throughout, having brushes with independence, politics, career development and the calling for which she had the greatest gift, writing.
Joyce Storey joined a writing group in her retirement and the novels (for this an amalgum of three books) came from her work in the group.
The Author is now deceased which for me adds poignancy and hope to the novel, while Joyce comes late to her calling; at least it comes!

I found this to be a charming read that is easily savored in appetizing tid-bits or relished at once as a meal. The recollections of Ms.Tomlinson's childhood growing up on the Mississippi Delta of Louisiana will resonate with all of us, no matter where we grew up. The anecdotes of her family are related with candor, humor, and love, done in the easy style of her popular on-line magazine, All Things Southern. The inclusion of recipes from family, neighbors and friends enhances the personal touch.
