Book Description

Fidelma of Cashel and her beloved companion Brother Eadulf have one final journey to make before returning to Ireland. Invited to Aldred's Abbey, where Eadulf's childhood friend Brother Botulf is steward, they arrive at midnight on the old pagan festival of Yule to find Botulf dead-his head caved in by a blunt instrument.

As Fidelma and Eadulf soon learn, murder isn't the only danger facing those in the abbey. The ghost of a young woman haunts the cloister shadows, a ghost closely resembling the Abbot's dead wife. It will require all of Fidelma's skill as an advocate of the Brehon Courts to uncover the truth-before the abbey's secrets take yet another life.

5 out of 5 stars Book Twelve in the Series.......2007-02-03

Peter Tremayne is the fiction pseudonym of a well-known authority on the ancient Celts, who has utilised his knowledge of the Brehon law system and 7th-Century Irish society to create a new concept in detective fiction.

The Sister Fidelma novels are taking on almost cult proportions and are becoming ever more popular with each offering from the author, whose obvious knowledge of the times and subjects he writes about shines out like a beacon on the shore.

As Sister Fidelma and Brother Eadulf are preparing to leave the shores of England and return to Ireland, they receive a mysterious summons from a boyhood friend of Eadulf, Brother Botulf. He has requested their presence at a nearby Abbey. Eadul and Fidelma battle their way through a winter storm to reach the Abbey, but when they arrive they find that Botulf is dead, killed by an unknown person. Staggered by the murder of his boyhood friend Eadulf, with the help of Fidelma search for the truth, but it soon becomes apparent that the death of Botulf is not the only trouble facing the abbey.

1 out of 5 stars Terribly and phony.......2006-01-11

I would give this book no stars if I could. The main character is supposed to be youngish, and yet she calmly make wise pronouncements that even the anti-female, old, stubborn characters stop and listen to in amazement before deferring to her. She is also supposed to be in love with the male lead, but there are no words or gestures of affection beyond that of a not-too-close friendship. The mystery itself was a disappointing chase that ends in an anti-climactic confrontation. Last but not least the male lead is an idiot who blunders along after Fidelma and accidentally stumbles upon answers that he doesn't understand. I finished it in the desperate hope to salvage my time spent, but I wish I hadn't. I read extensively, and this is one of the only books I have ever had such a hard time getting through from sheer boredom.

3 out of 5 stars more of the same, which isn't bad but isn't great.......2005-01-12

I've read as many of the books in this series as I could find. Fidelma is a terrific character and the setting is wonderful for those of us who enjoy a change of culture and setting. My only concern, and this may be a bit picky, is similar to a concern I bring to the Tony Hillerman novels featuring Jim Chee, the Navaho policeman. Each of these series fall prey to a forumulaic movement of narrative with predictable red herrings and plot developments. Similar to the Hillerman stories, coincidence of events and chance meetings of significant characters occur so often that the credulity of even the most generous reader is stretched to the breaking point. Plot holes are filled with hasty statements of explanation that do not satisfy and feel as if they were inserted at the insistence of a careful editor who came upon some gaping loose ends. There is much here to enjoy, but it is a rather shallow story that does not do credit to the depth of Fidelma's spirit.

4 out of 5 stars A Yuletide ghost story.......2004-08-26

I have read all the books in the Sister Fidelma series to date, and this one is quite different from most of the earlier ones. It appears that the relationship between Eadulf and Fidelma is going to be developed far beyond the Holmes-Watson stereotype that had been used in many of the earlier books. Indeed, Eadulf does most of the detecting during the course of the novel, as Fidelma spends the first 3/4 of the story very ill from a winter-induced ague. She does come back to put things together and solve the mystery at the end of the book, however. The story does take place at Christmas time, but this really doesn't enter into the story much except for the winter season. This also seems like a much darker book than most of the earlier stories. The harsh winter setting and the description of the bleak society of the Saxons (the book is set near Eadulf's home village of Seaxmund's Hame) contrasts starkly with the usual rich description of Irish society in the stories set in Eirann. On a picky note, some of the villains in the story escape punishment and a few of the questions in the story are really unanswered, but the unusual story and the character descriptions make up for that. The ending leads to much intriguing speculation on the futures of Eadulf and Fidelma, and makes me look forward to the continuation of the series. After many stories keeping them in a very static situation, the series promises to make some major changes in the future. Overall, not the best of the series, but still a better than average medieval style mystery.

5 out of 5 stars exciting multi-layered seventh century mystery.......2004-04-29

In 666 AD, Sister Fidelma of Cashel, daughter and sister to kings, is in what will become Great Britain with her Saxon husband Brother Eudolf, the emissary to Theodore, the Arch-bishop of Canterbury. After they are through with their business they travel to Aldred's Abbey to meet Brother Botulf who begged for a midnight meeting. Before they reach the abbey, they are caught in a storm and find shelter with "Mad" Mull who warns them that the place they seek is evil.

By the time they reach Aldred's Abbey, Fidelma is sick and Abbot Cild doesn't want a female in residence. He doesn't follow the Celtic Church but is a fanatic about obeying the rules coming out of Rome. Brother Botulf was murdered that morning and when Cild sees the ghost of his dead wife, he locks up Fidelma because he thinks she's a witch. When she is better, Fidelma and Eudolf escape but she must still solve the mystery of the death of Cild's wife and Brother Botulf if she wants to avert a war between two kingdoms.

The two protagonists are married under Irish law for a year and a day, but Fidelma realizes she can never be happy in Eudolf's homeland where women are treated as chattel. She does not have the power to question witnesses or give testimony and must tiptoe around the beliefs of the South Folk if she wants to bring the guilty to justice. THE HAUNTED ABBEY is an exciting multi-layered mystery and Peter Tremayne sets up the next book on the series with the last sentence of the novel so that a stunned, excited, and impatient audience will clamor for an early release of that novel.

    Book Description

From patient advocate Mary Shomon, author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, here is the first book to tackle the weight factors specific to thyroid patients and detail a conventional and alternative plan for lasting weight loss.

An estimated 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease––most of them women––and for the majority of them, losing weight is mentioned time and time again as a primary concern and chief frustration––a challenge made more difficult due to the metabolic slowdown of a malfunctioning thyroid gland. For these thyroid patients, treatment alone doesn't seem to resolve weight problems. Further, they may struggle with raising basic metabolism, resolving underlying nutritional deficiencies, treating depression and correcting brain chemistry imbalances, reducing stress, and combating insulin resistance.

o The Thyroid Diet will identify these factors that inhibit a thyroid patient's ability to lose weight, and offer solutions––both conventional and alternative––to help. It will discuss optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a low–glycemic, high–fibre, low–calorie diet, eaten as smaller, more frequent meals to balance blood sugar. The Thyroid Diet addresses the use of various herbs, nutritional supplements, and prescription weight loss drugs, outlining the necessity of exercise, and drawing together all information into an integrated diet and exercise plan. It contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support groups, here is vital help for the millions of thyroid patients dealing with weight problems.

o Mary Shomon has been praised by doctors around the country for her medical knowledge and sensitivity to patients' needs. She will be receiving similar blurbs for this new book. There are no other books on controlling your weight problems if you have a thyroid condition, yet over 40% of overweight people have evidence of a thyroid condition, and the weight loss problems facing them are unique and need a specific approach.

What a disappointment. Expecting something new here, but didn't get it. Basically this is the GI diet - and if that doesn't work for you then there are a whole host of other well known diets suggested. Though the book begins by giving numerous examples of people who seem to eat little but get/stay fat, it goes on to trot out the usual 'eat less and exercise more' advice.

5 out of 5 stars The Thyroid Diet, By Mary Shomon.......2007-09-24

This book, is wonderful, whether you are a long time thyroid patient or just starting to underestand your thyroid...this book and her many other titles that Mary J. Shomon. She gets you to understand things that a/your doctor talks you into circles. or you have tried everything in the world to get your body moving, this is the book for you. this makes a great gift too. i highly recommend this book, or her many titles that she offers.

Although I am reading this book in stages, it has already given me so much information. I have started a new regime of supplements that has been approved by my doctor and I think I'm begining to see results. It is nice to know that I am not the only person having problems losing weight with a thyroid problem. I started to feel that it was only happening to me.
    Thank you Mary J. Shomon

    2 out of 5 stars Not a diet.......2007-07-07

This is not a diet, it is an overview of all the other stuff Shomon has out. It is a recommendation of how to manage your thyroid, if you haven't read anything or are just finding out about a thyroid problem, it has lots of information, but if you have had thyroid problems and know about them, it is the same stuff you've always heard. I didn't learn anything new, and it really isn't a diet............is was disappointed. No new answers for those of us who are being treated with medication. If weight is a problem, as I have with thyroid problems, this is not the answer..........

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding & such a relief.......2007-06-12

I literally cried as I read this book on hypothyroidism. I had radioactive iodine treatment in 1994 to treat Graves Disease. I guess the disease has been in 'remission' all these years. A few years ago I started feeling lousy. I was gaining weight no matter how active I was plus I was eating way healthy. I was losing energy almost daily, no matter what I did to try to energize myself. I had leg cramps; my cholesterol (the bad stuff) went up; blood sugar levels went up; I became iron deficient. All in a matter of a few months. My medical doctor harped on my weight and lack of physical activity. Mary Shomon's book liberated me, made me feel sane again, helped me realize that I am OK, I will survive, and that what I am experiencing is not all in my head. Thank you, thank you, thank you SO very much.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jams - No Added Pectin.......2007-09-11

I have been borrowing this book for over a year and finally bought my own copy. It's worth the price just for the overall technique, even without all of the individual recipes. I have made A LOT of jam out of this book and it always comes out great. Of course, in case you prefer it, this is not the tight hard type of jam - it's luscious and a bit runny. The flavors are delicious!

I don't like using pectin and I don't like paying for pectin. These recipes contain only fruits, sugar, and flavorings. You'll be proud of your product.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, exotic jams.......2006-11-04

This book is one of the most exciting cookbooks that I have used recently. Besides containing standard flavors such as strawberries and peach, it also has the more interesting combinations of Pear with a Balsalmic Vinegar and Spices, Carrot with Cardamom, Strawberry and Balck Pepper, and so forth. Every combination I have tried has been incredibly good, especially the Raspberry with Star Anise. Most of the recipes seem to make about 5-6 half-pint jars, but as it's not stated anywhere in the book, make sure to sterilize a few extra. These jams always come out fresh-tasting and with a slightly soft set, the benefit of using natural pectin in fruit and not adding one. However, since some of the low pectin fruits still require pectin, there is a recipe for green apple pectin stock to provide the needed pectin, great if you have access to underripe apples.

This is a great book, especially for those wanting to take preserve making one step further and try interesting combinations. In fact, trying those interesting combinations certainly got my creative juices flowing and inspired me to make some fun mixes of my own.

However, this is not a book that goes over the particulars involved in preserving foods and canning, and the necessary sanitation and precautions it entails, so any first-time canners need to pick up another book or do some research online for these techniques.

All in all, I would definetly buy this book again if it was ever lost or stolen by the many admiring friends who have borrowed it so far.

4 out of 5 stars for a cook with experience.......2006-08-28

Because the recipes do not go into great detail regarding process, it is best if you know something about making jams and jellies. That said, if you've ever had a Christine Ferber jam or jelly (and my favorite is her Isfahan--a beautiful concoction of rose water, raspberries and lychees), and live neither in Paris nor Tokyo (where her products are available) then you just may be forced to making them yourself. It is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars A book for the artisan jam maker.......2006-02-22

If you are an experienced preserver and looking for jam and jelly recipes that are not your typical grocery store variety, this is the book. The canning instructions and times are not included that's why I suggested this book is for a seasoned canner looking for recipes to make artisan jams & jellies. There are combinations of ingredients that sound wonderful and I never would have thought of putting them together. Very glad I purchased this book.

      3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2005-11-16

A nice jamming book hailing from France that does not follow any USDA requirements for healthy and safe jamming, and includes insufficient information on safe jamming.

Christine Ferber is a fourth generation jammer and baker. She has written several cookbooks. Currently, she lives in Alsace, France.

When viewing the photographs in this book, it is no wonder that so many people fall in love with the French. It, also, helps that Jacques Pepin and Marion Cunningham have given their culinary nod of approval to this book.

There is some extremely basic instruction on how to jam, with some creative produce combinations. The recipes are easy-to-read and understand.

The chapters containes within this book are: The Fruit; Sugar & Cooking; Equipment; Filling the Jars & Storing the Jams; Spring; Summer; Fall; and Winter.

There is no instruction on pH levels within this book. Ferber does not mention low-acids food either. This book also uses specific varities of produce available only in France, I was hesitant to even try some recipes as I was wondering how that affected the pH levels, if any. There are no recipes in this book for diabetics, nor are there any additional recipes utilizing jams.

Some of the recipes found within this book are: Kumquat, Orange and Passionfruit Jam, Banana and Coconut Jam, Pink Grapefruit Jelly and Pinot Noir Jelly.

Being the instruction on jamming is so basic, I feel that this book is more designed for an experienced jammer who is more knowledgeable in the science behind jamming. A lot of home cooks feel that they are more skilled then they really are. In regards to jamming and pickling, I find that to be a dangerous combination. There is no information on pH and the acid content of produce, and how that can affect your jams, healthwise. There should be more discussion about the science behind jamming. I would recommend that "The Jamlady Cookbook" by Bev Alfeld be purchased instead. Her book is more thorough and provides over 400 recipes. Alfeld's book teaches you how to create, as opposed to just handing you a stack of recipes, assuming you will follow them.

      Book Description

“This book is endlessly enlightening and entertaining . . . will appeal to all dog owners.” —Ann LaFarge, Taconic News

How do dogs think? Short of breeding a talking dog (not as impossible as it sounds), the best we can do is to carefully observe and record their behavior. And after a decade of research, the internationally renowned ethologist Vilmos Csányi has brilliantly captured the high degree of mutual understanding and empathy that exists between humans and their proverbial best friends.

Drawing in part on close observations of his own dogs, Flip and Jerry, Csányi argues that the long-standing alliance of dogs and humans arose from the problem-solving and communications skills evident in wolves, from which all modern dogs are descended. These basic intellectual skills were refined and enhanced as dogs and humans evolved together over tens of thousands of years. And because dogs were bred to be mankind’s helpmates, the dog owner who knows what to look for can interpret their thoughts, desires, and motivations.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Not a bedtime book!.......2007-04-04

I have to say that I enjoyed this book even though it was not an "easy read". The stories of Csanyi's own dogs were amusing - and he pointed out reasonable explanations for their behavior. I agree with some of his theories such as: Dogs were domestically bred to understand and communicate with humans. Makes sense although he does go a bit too far. The experiments were interesting, the study of ethology being what it is. Interesting book but not for the novice.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but flaky.......2005-08-04

This book is by a top ethologist (one who studies behavior and thought processes, as far as I can gather) and gives insight into the minds of dogs. The author is careful to tell us that the many anecdotes he tells about his own dogs should be interpreted with caution, but that anecdotes can lead to careful scientific experimentation, which can give more substantial information.

The work is largely pretty scholarly and goes into the way other animals, including humans, Alex the parrot and the clever Hans (a counting horse), think and reason. The author makes compelling arguments, using both anecdotes and experiments, for dogs' being able to show empathy, ask questions, respond, and perform several other high-order cognitive functions normally associated with only humans. This makes sense when you realize that among all animals, dogs are the species that has been most influenced by human tinkering. Dogs truly are adapted to living with us and being true companions.

And that was all well and good and very interesting. But sometimes, the author makes some pretty wild stretches in interpreting his dogs' actions, for example, and states his interpretations as unambiguous, when they really didn't seem that way to me. For a scientist, he doesn't always seem all that rigorous when it comes to his own dogs (who, by the way, as he himself admits, are ill-mannered).

Then right at the end he goes off on a wild tangent of how breeders should intentionally breed hybrid dogs from purebred stock (I'm a fan of the mixed breeds, but I've never heard anyone propose such a deliberate program to breed them) and even proposes developing talking dogs. He didn't seem to be kidding!

At the very end, he goes on a rant about using dogs in laboratory experiments. I don't like it much myself, but he makes several misstatements about the practice. Maybe in Hungary laboratories use dogs from shelters or stolen from loving families, but in the developed world, dogs for experimentation are bred for that purpose.

Finally, the translation from the Hungarian was often a bit stilted and odd. Still, there was a lot of interesting information among the flakiness.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-03-28

Learned a great deal about the mental abilities of dogs. The book gets into great detail with experiments that are not easy to follow for the non-science reader. I gave it 5 stars because I learned so much more from this book than anywhere else.

            Book Description

Quilt Artistry will transform the way that readers think about quilts. Author Yoshiko Jinzenji began quilting after she came upon quilts made by Canada's Mennonite people and was deeply moved by their resonant, sacred quality. The richly minimalist quilts she makes today are as powerful as the
works that originally inspired her. Quilt Artistry presents her unforgettable quilt creations in 100 color photos and in 300 black-and-white photos and diagrams. Detailed patterns and instructions are included for all projects shown.

In addition to full-size quilts, Jinzenji demonstrates how to make quilted pillows, clutch purses, necklaces, decorative objects, table mats, tiny miniature quilt "mandalas," even a hammock. There are a total of 90 projects, for everyone from beginners to the most advanced quilters.

Jinzenji is also a superb natural dyer and often makes quilts from fabric or fiber she colors herself, including very subtle and rich bamboo-dyed white silk.

In other quilts she uses antique fabric collected from around the world, and in still others vibrant tropical natural dyes or innovative synthetics such as black metallic cloth created by well-known textile designer Jun'ichi Arai. No matter what the material, her quilts all have a remarkable quiet
power. They resonate with a spiritual quality like that of classic North American quilts, but one that is rooted in an Asian, even Buddhist sensibility.

Jinzenji has always wanted to "give something back" to the Western quilting tradition that first motivated her own work, and with this book she is wonderfully successful. Quiltmakers and all others with an interest in textiles or design will find Quilt Artistry as inspirational as it is
            practical.

            5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2003-04-30

Yoshiko Jinzenji has made a beautiful book showing her magnificient quilts and pieces of fabric arts.

The book itself, photos, paper, printing, writing, style, is a piece of art. A book you will be happy to own, no matter if you are a quilter or just a book lover. A perfect coffee table book for any home, though this one is so much more than a coffee table book. This book deserves to be read and be looked through again and again.

Yoshiko Jinzenji has been a quilter for a lifetime, and during these years she has developed her own unique and perfect style. We get to know Jinzenji through the pages of the book, both through words and through pictures. We meet her and her quilts in Kyoto, and we meet her in her studio in Bali. The book also have a section on how to make quilts, easy to read, easy to follow the step by step instructions. Jinzenji makes her quilts from ancient fabric collected from around the world, and she makes her quilts from natural dyes in light, clean colors. But no matter what the fabric is, her vibrant quilts all stand out and have all their own story to tell

The highlights in the book though are the pictures. The somewhat clean and stylish picture of a Small Modern Amish quilt displayed on the wall in her Kyoto home, the fantastic puzzle of an uncountable number of small Mandala quilts put together to form a universe in colors, cloths and patterns, the collague of many pictures from scenes around her studio in Bali as inspirations for future quilts.

The way the writing and photos in the book are put together shows the reader a new way to look at the surroundings, and through that a new way to look at life. Or to say it with the words from the foreword of the book, written by textile designer Jun'ichi Arai; I am convinced that Yoshiko Jinzenji's achievements in establishing a new genre in quilting will never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite portrait of an exquisite mind.......2003-04-17

A piece of fabric is the pulse of life is written across our eyes by drape, shape, texture, and hue. Art forms, and perhaps art itself, have their own genetic codes-forms of doubling and redoubling that, as DNA does with the cell, determine a look, a feel, a character, an emotion. Lucky, then, are the pieces of fabric doubled and redoubled by the eyes and hands of Yoshiko Jinzenji. A few snips of color and weave become a mix of art and the irrepressible urge to adorn that make you want to dive off this world and into what you see.

She best articulates the origins of all this in her book's Introduction:

"I have a very clear memory of my first encounter with quilts. It was in Toronto in the winter of 1970, in the furniture section of Eaton's department store downtown. There, surrounded by standardized fluffy bedspreads, were two handmade quilts draped over wooden racks. I went over to them as if drawn by a magnet and took them in my hand, wondering what on earth these handmade quilts were doing in the middle of a display of manufactured goods. The oddity of the combination was stunning. The quilts were made by joining together many small pieces of cloth and then covering the whole with fine hand stitching. Each had a price tag, and I was stunned again to see that they were not much more expensive than the manufactured spreads. Who could have made these, I asked myself, and what had inspired their beautiful handwork

Yoshiko's work is a textile manifestation of the preoccupation with apres-antique and avant-garde that characterizes so much of Japanese culture today. On page 40 she recounts the symbiosis of ancient textiles in the tea ceremony; a scant 7 pages further on were are suddenly confronted with a work made of some of the most interesting cloth ideations of Jun'ichi Arai. Jun'ichi is arguably the most innovative and certainly the most influential textile creative artist working today-the textile equivalent of Issey Miyake's fabrications in his heyday of two decades ago. Jun'ichi has taken the marriage of technology and history further down the road to progeny than any other designer. He also is an astonishingly good and sensitive writer, and his Foreword to Yoshiko's book is so good that it is reproduced below.

Yoshiko, like Jun'ichi, is nothing if not a creative technician who happens to make art. Her text and caption content sums to an amazingly low overall word count given the amount of detail and philosophy it conveys. One reason is the lush plates-many so good they could be enlarged and hung in a gallery devoted to contemporary fine-art photography. Then there are the dozens of step-by-step how-to diagrams that guide the home quilter through the process of emulating Yoshiko's pieces. The readers need not be especially accomplished sewers, either, for despite their complex look, Yoshiko's pieces are really composed of fairly straightforward elements lines and patterns; there's just a lot of them. Any who would re-create one of her works at home needs patience more than proficiency.

Yoshiko is generous enough to pass along step-by-step instructions for a dyeing method she found via experiment in order to accomplish what must be the ultimate coals-to-Newcastle notion in textile history: dyeing white material white. That might seem an exercise in conceit, but the reason goes far back into the wellsprings of Japanese aesthetics. As she tells it,

"I had been making quilts for years from fabrics that I dyed myself with natural dyes when I had a kind of awakening. It was during an exhibition where my work was being shown together with that of a lacquerware artist. When I looked at his pieces, with their simple and beautiful form and their quiet sheen achieved by applying lacquer in careful layers, I thought, what kind of fabric could I make that would have the same sense of power? Finally it came to me, I wanted to find a natural dye that would dye cloth white. . . . In the field of natural dyes white was the one color no one knew how to obtain. For me white was suggestive of the fusuma and shoji sliding doors used to separate Japanese-style rooms, as well as the traditions of sumi ink drawings and calligraphy and even the white sand of Zen gardens."

"Finally I hit on the idea of trying that strange combination of tree and grass, bamboo. Two or three hours later the cloth had been transformed. It was if the silk was a prism sparkling with colors like pink, yellow, and green. It was a white with depths."

Yoshiko's book is a combination of high art and ladle-in-the-dyebath practicality. The many full-plate and even more part-page pictures amply illustrate the first. The drawings and text take care of the latter. With so many active quilters and societies all around the world these days, few would argue that quilting isn't an art form. With Yoshiko's book in hand, anyone interested in quilting, textiles, home design, or fashion design will be inspired to make art of their own. Her 90 specific projects, clear design patterns and detailed instructions can guide just about anyone with enthusiasm and patience to make quilts, pillows, clutch purses, mandalas, spreads, wall hangings, and even a hammock to end all hammocks. Yoshiko's work is a rarity even in the world of art-to-wear and its nonwearable textile art relatives: utterly unique.

            5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2003-02-10

This book is beautifully written and designed. The cover and paper used are artful. Yoshiko Jenzenji shares her passion for quilting in a way that weaves a common thread through cultures, locales, nature, and spirituality. I could feel my heart swell as I read through this book and as I looked at and studied the photographs. This is a book about her quilts and about quilting--but the photography and artistry of its cover and between its covers makes it a special treasure. I am excited to own this book and will be proud to display it. I am so inspired by Yoshiko Jenzenji's quilt work and passion for quilting. I became dizzy with inspiration! I will recommend it to every friend I have--and not all of them are quilters! I would think they would all want to BECOME quilters after experiencing this book. Yoshiko Jenzenji seemed to open her heart and her home with this book. I am thankful to her for sharing her passion and talent with the world!

The Nazis threw him into a POW camp, where he joined the unknown war: one to liberate his homeland from the Soviets. Narzikul spent time in Poland, Czechoslovakia, the USSR, Germany & France. Communists hunted him in Eastern Europe after the war; & the CIA recruited him. Photos.

5 out of 5 stars This book would make a great movie........2001-02-07

As the story unfolded I came to know and love Isakjan . This was a man who grew up in the most difficult of times, and he survived impossible circumstances while maintaining a great and dignified human nature.

The politics of this book are clear and honest. Isakjan makes political comments that appear to be as open and fair as any I have ever heard. The fact that the author wrote this book from years of conversations with his subject makes this biography even more compelling. The author appears to have done some extensive research to verify the accuracy of this story and the footnotes and extensive bibliography give me confidence in the factual information that is provided.

I thought that I knew about WWII, but this book provides vision for the political events that are being played out today. I think I will read it again, and then send a copy to a friend.

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible book.......2001-01-16

What an incredible book! In addition to a moving presentation of a fascinating life, the book opened my eyes to hidden momentous folds in the fabric of history. We have all read history as dictated by the winners and explained by the losers. Mr. Crane shows what those squeezed in the middle have to say.

I purchased this book for the Soviet and World War II history. It opened my eyes to some of the most complex, important and unknown aspects of that period. I loved reading "Survivor" because the subject, Jay Narzikul, led one of the more interesting lives of our era, replete with staggering world events, love, dirty and clean politics, deceit, adventure, heroes and fools, murder, freedom, and the pursuit of justice. The story unfolds like the best of novels.
