One of the Better Cadfaels.......2006-11-05
I enjoyed this Brother Cadfael story. It has a lot of the standard parts that one finds in this series, but with some interesting twists. It is one of the better ones of the series.
Heretical leanings.......2006-05-09
This is the sixteenth chronicle of Brother Cadfael, ex soldier/crusader, herbalist and healer, lately come monk and incorrigibly inquisitive sleuth. Elave is a young man who has accompanied his master, William of Lythwood,to Jerusalem and the East and who followed his instructions to the letter by bringing home his body after death to be buried at the Abbey Of St.Peter and St.Paul. He also brought with him an elaborately carved chest, with unknown contents, as the dowry for William's foster daughter. Before Elave left with his master on his travels, he had filled the position of what would be known today as an accoutant, keeping stocks of the family's money and possessions. This position was filled in his absence by Aldwin, a dour, pessimistic man who is convinced that he'll be discarded now that Elave has returned, and so sets about making trouble for him. Aldwin's murdered body is found and suspicions point to Elave as the killer. At this same time, a very self important Canon of the Church is a visitor at the Abbey and when Elave, somewhat in his cups, is heard making what could be taken as heretical statements on points of Church law, the Canon insists that he be taken before a court of the Church and tried for heresy. Brother Cadfael investigates both claims in his methodical way and, once again, saves the day. Perhaps this story is a little too tied up with points of theology for some readers, but it's still a most enjoyable read for Cadfael fans.
Flat Inverted Theology.......2006-04-16
This is not a book I can recommend. There was no depth of character, or plot. I expected some twists and turns, but it was all predictable. The characters are indelibly flat. Of greatest dissapointment were the heresies, for the author just seems to pass by them as unimportant. There are some major Pelagian defects in the thoughts of one of the protagonists, and the magnitude of the defects is swept aside by the characters we are meant to bond with, who decide in favor of the heresy through simple platitudes! The primary character, Cadfael, seems to contribute but little to the book or the mystery, and I found great difficulty in caring for any of these characters at all.
Two for the price of one!.......2006-03-27
As I was reading this book, I remarked to a friend "how often do you get to read a mystery novel that talks about St. Augustine, infant baptism, co-equality of the Trinity, predestination, and Peripassian heresy?" For those who are not interested in such things, this installment in the Brother Cadefael series might seem somewhat tedious. I for one, however, enjoyed the added intellectual stimulation of the doctrinal controversies.
Aside from the heresy issues, which play a fairly peripheral role in the actual crime in question, this is a fairly standard (by Brother Cadfael standards) murder mystery. As always, romance plays a big role in both the heresy subplot and the murder investigation.
I normally give 4 stars to Brother Cadfael mysteries. I'm giving 5 here for the added value supplied by the heresy issues. Those who have no interest in theology and church history might want to give it a 3.
Stay away from this book.......2005-03-16
I had never read a Brother Cadfael book before this and I don't plan on reading any after. This book was bland, boring and butchered the English language. It was set in a sanitized version of the middle ages where everything sparkled besides, of course, the prose. If you want to read a good book with similar elements, try The Name Of The Rose by Umberto Eco. It's also about heresy, a mysterious book and a monk who investigates crimes during the middle ages. However, unlike The Heretic's Apprentice, it's good.

An Odd Story Set in an Odd Land.......2001-11-09
In the Dreamland, everything is based on the whim of the Seven Sleepers. Everything is constantly changing: the land, the weather, the way people look, even their sexes. To the inhabitants of Dreamland, all of this is normal. What *isn't* normal is Roan. Roan doesn't change. He has looked the same all his life. Now, some of the scientists from Dreamland have decided to try and wake the Sleepers. The general belief throughout Dreamland is that without the dreams of the Sleepers, Dreamland would cease to exist. These scientists want to test that theory, even at the cost of their existence. It's now up to Roan and his friends to stop them. The setting of this novel is refreshing in its uniqueness. However, it seems that in an attempt to make the novel longer, Roan and his friends are faced with obstacle after obstacle, each more ridiculous than the last. Almost invariable, Roan somehow manages to save the day. Granted, the whole premise for this novel is farfetched, but it started getting out of hand. The ending, on the other hand, is interesting and was totally unexpected. Read this book because it's different, but don't expect anything too involved or in-depth.
Quite a Good Read!.......2000-07-20
In reading many of the other reviews for this book, I am angered! One person daid bad things about three very good fantasy writers in one small review; Anne McCaffrey (not my favorite, but okay...), Piers Anthony, and now Jody Lynn Nye.
In a way, I can see why some may not enjoy this book. They say it is boring or something like that; and when I compare it to epic fantasies by Terry Goodkind or Robert Jordan, yes, this book is very boring, but it is supposed to be a light read...I call it brain candy...and this is great!
Jody takes us through an interesting world called the Dreamland...which is dreamt up by The Seven Sleepers, each dreaming one of the seven provinces of the Dreamland! The characters change form very often and that adds to the story...I know it isn't very deep...but nonetheless, it is a quick, easy, and wonderful read!
Jody Lynn Nye is a very talented author, even those who didn't enjoy this book say that...but I enjoyed this book...and even if you have second thoughts, don't, I mean, it'll only take one or two sittings to finish, a bit longer depending on how fast you read...but it goes by fast anyway! This is for all Piers Anthony lovers, it is Jody Lynn Nye with a Xanthian twist! Enjoy!
Disappointingly Bland.......2000-05-08
Jody Lynn Nye is a normally talented, wonderful author. Her books are a fun read. This was the exception, and the sequel isn't much better. The book meandered through Dreamland, and seems as if it is a poorly designed take-off of Neverending Story (the movie, not the book). It is confusing, with numerous 'save the day' rescues by Roan and his crew. Stick with other of Ms. Nye's works, and avoid this one!
For a fantasy book it was pretty good........1999-09-21
Alright, fantasy books are not my style, but in my defence, I was desperate. However though I liked this one! Roan is a compelling and caring character, although it is hard to believe someone could be that ultruistic. Interesting background. The minor character's became confusing at times, but what can you expect when everything and everyone is in a state of permament flux(is that an oxymoron? or a double negative?) :) Waking in dreamland is good, school of light, the sequel, is skipable.
Formula Fantasy with no surprises.......1999-07-07
A bitter disapointment from a normally talented author. Waking in dreamland might as well have been a Zanth novel. After so many good books, if baffles me how this author could fall so low. Jody, you've been hanging around Anne McCaffrey too long.

Patient Advocacy at it's best.......2007-09-03
This book is written toward the average layperson and something that has been needed for a long time. As a nurse, I read this book as research. I speak on the topic of patient advocacy and have an independent practice as a case manager. This information (for the most part)is the very information I share with others on a regular basis. For anyone who has ever left the physician's office confused about what they are expected to do next, this book will encourage you to take control of your own health information. I feel that anyone who takes this information to heart will become a smarter patient, one who is in more control of their medical health, and able to save money from unnecessary repeated diagnostic studies and the like. The resources and health history sections are worth the cost of the book.

I've read this book and it has really changed my outlook on health care. You really need to get to know how the system works in order to get the best from it. Through this book, Dr. Oz helped to give me gain those core insights to make more informed decisions. I am a huge fan of his work and am so excited to be attending one of his five special health care workshops this summer. His workshop will offer education on the human body and better weight and health management. The name if the tour is "It's all about you" and that's the frame of mind I'm in right now. I am ready to put myself and my health at the center of my life. I hope you can join me in getting to learn from and possibly meet Dr. Oz.

The author clearly has a great deal of knowledge and experience with golden's, but the book is extremely poorly written. The topics explored are very relevant and useful, but discussion was cosmetic at best. Nothing was ever described with enough detail to be useful. It felt like the author wrote the book over a weekend without putting any serious thought into what they wanted to discuss or convey.

This book was much more thorough than the other books we looked at, especially the "Dummies" book. Maybe not as fun to read, but much more useful.

Title says everything about this book and pictures inside. There is also 40 pages containg biography of Horst P. Horst.
Elegant, Stylized Classical Portraiture.......2001-09-21
Horst P. Horst was at the top of his game as a photographer for a career that spanned 60 years. The key to his appeal lies in a sound foundation in portraiture composition of the sort that the great painting masters used. To this, he added echoes of form, sensuous light and shadow, and a frequent ability to catch people at their best. While I find his faces often over or under lit for my taste, this book contains dozens of virtually flawless images that you will cherish. One of the nice elements of the book is that Mr. Horst was adept at color photography, as well as black-and-white. The book contains 130 duotone images and 20 in full color. His subjects are usually actors, models, fashion designers, and artists. The three Vogues (American, British, and French) were his most frequent employers. The volume is greatly improved by an introduction that explains how his career developed and his relationship with other photographers and magazine editors. I thought the detailed captions for the photographs were very interesting and impressive, giving the volume a depth that most fine photography books lack. The quality of the book, paper, reproduction, and design are all superb. This show will open in Boston in mid-October, and I plan to see it then!

The worst in the series........2002-09-23
"The 60'S: Mods & Hippies" was worse than it preceding books, "The 40'S & 50's: Utility to New Look," "The 20s & 30s: Flapper & Vamps," "1900-02: Linen & Lace." As with the "The 40'S & 50's: Utility to New Look," this book focused more on the changes America faced, then with the fashion changes. I do not recommend.
