Book Description
Hailed as a masterpiece--the finest work yet by an American novelist of the first rank--THE MAN IN MY BASEMENT tells the story of a young black man who can't find a job, drinks too much, and, worst of all, stands to lose the beautiful home that's belonged to his family for generations. All that changes, however, when a stranger offers $50,000 to rent out the young man's basement, and soon the two men are drawn together into circumstances so bizarre as to be almost beyond imagination.
Download Description
Charles Blakey is a young black man whose life is slowly crumbling. His parents are dead, he can't find a job, he drinks too much, and his friends have begun to desert him. Worst of all, he's fallen behind on the mortgage payments for the beautiful home that's belonged to his family for generations. When a stranger offers him $50,000 in cash to rent out Charles's basement for the summer, he needs the money too badly to say no. He knows that the stranger must want something more than a basement view. Sure enough, he has a very particularand bizarreset of requirements, and Charles tries to satisfy him without getting lured into the strangeness. But he sees an opportunity to understand secrets of the white world, and his summer with a man in his basement turns into a journey into inconceivable worlds of power, and manipulation, and unimagined realms of humanity. Richly textured and compelling, THE MAN IN MY BASEMENT is a new literary pinnacle from an acknowledged American master.

excruciating.......2007-10-10
Every fine novelist experiments, and here Mosley tries his hand at Dostoevski's Underground Man or Camus's Stranger. The protagonist, Charles ("not Charlie!") is merely a pompous, verbose, drunken windbag whose "philosophy" is trite barroom cynicism. He muses endlessly about "Evil" (which seems to be Rich People) and about his only other topic, himself. The basement cage premise sounds more interesting than what Mosley actually does with it. Don't want to give away the ending, but I waited in vain for the twist that would repay the time wasted. Some growth, understanding, something. I longed for Easy or Fearless, whose actions showed Mosley's real understanding of life. Mosley knows far more than he can verbalize. This book is like watching a great actor try to sing and dance.
Mosely sets up shop inside the reader's head.. and then tweaks it........2007-10-10
Many points in this novel stood out for me because I could draw parallels between my life and Charles Dodd-Blakey's. Despite our societal and ethnic differences, neither of us have finished college yet and are looked down upon for it. This shared trait between the character and myself really took it home for me.
While studying all types of literature, particularily African, the ties to Mr. Dodd-Blakey's family history, as well as Anniston Bennett's work history were insightful and helpful.
I believe this book illustrates that none of the characters had power, despite their thoughts to the contrary. I was surprised by the end, disappointed, disturbed, enlightened and in a strange way, redeemed.
Fun and suspenseful.......2007-07-23
When we meet Charles, an African-American man living in his family's stately ancestral home on Long Island, he's not only down on his luck but feeling altogether directionless. One afternoon Anniston Bennet, a small white man, shows up on his doorstep with an unusual request - to live in Charles' basement for 65 days. For this Charles would be paid handsomely, and after some deliberation he agrees, but it isn't long before he has reason to suspect that Anniston's lodging request is a bit more complex and bizarre.
This was my first Mosley work, as he is primarily a writer of mysteries. 'Basement' is a small book, making for a quick read, and I enjoyed it pretty well. The nature of the ending took me by surprise, although looking back I should have seen it - or something - coming.
Very Strange, very very strange.......2007-05-27
Walter Mosley, as has been noted in the other reviews on this site, is a detective novelist with a difference--his characters and plots deal with more than just whodunnit, and his detectives look for more than just the killer. Sometimes they seem to be searching for the meaning of life; often when they're not pressing that hard it's apparent that Mosley's exploring various issues of race relations and tension in the United States.
In the current book, Mosley pretty much completely abolishes his mystery plot and detective main character. The one vestige of these that he retains is the first person narrative, along with the somewhat thin thread that said main character is trying to figure out what is going on while the plot of the story unfolds.
Charles Blakey is a black man who lives in Sag Harbor, in an old house that's been owned by his family for many generations. His ancestors were never slaves, having been brought to the New World as indentured servants, and he has a strong attachment to his house because his ancestors built it and have lived there for so long. Unfortunately, he's fallen on hard times: he rationalized embezzling money from the bank where he worked as a teller, and now he's been blackballed from getting work anywhere in town. When a strange, enigmatic, wealthy white man shows up on his doorstep with an even more bizarre proposal, Blakey's first instinct is to slam the door in his face--so he does. Later, however, he reconsiders, and the result is that Bennett (the strange white man) winds up in Blakey's basement, living in a cage and reading Will and Ariel Durant.
As the book progresses, it becomes apparent that Mosley is intent on trying to get us to confront some of the day's more "controversial" issues. The difficulty is that his portrayal of Bennett is difficult to make any sense of. He's by turns not guilty of anything, and guilty of everything, and Blakey (who's apparently intended as a foil) isn't exactly innocent, embezzler and rationalizer that he is. By the time that the book takes the strange turn of having Blakey discover, improbably, that the antiques in his attic are worth tens of thousands of dollars, the whole thing has become confused and more than a bit strange. Thankfully, it's nothing if not short.
I generally enjoy Walter Mosley, and this book wasn't unpleasant to read. It was, however, difficult to fathom what the author was saying, beyond the obvious bromides that permeate the debate today: everyone's responsible for the evil in the world, we all have to do our part, etc. I think I like it better when he stuck with mysteries, and riffed on race relations in the sixties.
Unique Idea of Self Life Analysis .......2007-05-15
An amazing and unique story of discoverment of the human conscience. Although Charles isn't the most likeable character for you to truly care much about the journey he's going through, it is still fascinating to read about and follow that journey. The Man in the My Basement is an interesting read, and a novel you won't want to put down until the final page.
Charles Blakey was fired by a bank because his hand was going from the till to his pocket. Unemployed for ages, drunk most of the time, his friends getting sick of his lack of ambition and with the bank about to foreclose on his home which has been in his family for generations his future isn't looking too flash. One day a man comes to his door and offers him an obscene amount of money to install a cage in and rent his basement. Charles will act as his warden while the man punishes himself for his crimes but Charles is hesitant to do so, even more so after while cleaning out the basement to ready it for his new visitor he learns he has many valuable assets that can be sold to museums and collectors so has no immediate crucical need for the money. But Charles has already arranged for the arrival of his new guest and it is a lot of money after all.
This is the first Mosley book I've read and it definitely will not be my last!

A Winner.......2000-07-09
The authors give the reader a comprehensive understanding of how Video Poker machines are programmed and how they function. They also give three strategies for optimum play which are excellent guidelines for conservative players to those willing to take higher risks. Their advice on play is good common sense.

Recommended by Certified Personal Trainer.......2007-10-09
Finally, a book that is for real life! It was very refreshing to read about the right way to get into shape! No fads or "quick fixes" his program is what are bodies were designed to do - move (exercise) and eat balanced, healthy meals without going overboard.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously about getting in shape and STAYING is shape.
Melts off the fat.......2007-04-01
An exercise and diet plan that uses basic workout equipment - and really melts off the fat, in spite of the planned cheat days.
It really works!!!.......2007-01-13
I have tried billions of diet plans. 12 months ago I weighed nearly 200 pounds. I picked up this book at a local library one day, sat down and read it, as I have read plenty of diet books, and once I put it down after finishing it I started my diet. The first thing I did was go to the pantry and ate a donut! I started on the cheat day. Then the next day I started with the 25 minute workouts and the eating plan. In ten months I lost 66 pounds and I'm still losing. Without the cheat day I don't think this would have worked for me. I love to eat, and I love my junk food, and my cheat days allow me to eat just that, while fitting into a size 6 for the first time in my life!!
Five Factor Fitness brings real results!.......2006-11-23
I've been following the program for about 1 week now, including following some of the recipies in the book and in 1 week i've lost 5lbs, 2 inches on my waist and 4 1/2 inches on my hips, results I have not been able to reach over the past 6 months despite taking aerobic classes regularly. The plan is very easy to follow, and modify for eating out. I have been adding 10-20 minutes on the tail end of the workout on the treadmill walking at a steep incline as Harley recommends vs. running. Best of all, I feel stronger and healthier. I'm looking forward to using this program for a long time to come.
Great book for anyone!.......2006-07-06
This book is easy to read, entertaining, and intelligent. Mr Pasternak is definitely an 'outside the box' thinker and his ideas are well researched and his programs work. I'm a Personal Trainer who has fallen in love with this program and am using it to help my clients reach their goals faster without the frustration of a normal 'diet' plan. Whether you're trying to put on muscle, lose fat, or just get that Hollywood body, this simple program will help you get there!

The Food and Life of Oaxaca, by New York restaurateur Zarela Martinez, is a fascinating cultural study disguised as a great cookbook. Martinez is part of the new renaissance of Mexican food writers and chefs, including Rick Bayless and Diana Kennedy, who reaffirm that culinary awareness goes hand in hand with cultural awareness.
In fact, Martinez, a Mexican, credits her time in Oaxaca as "redefining my whole understanding of Mexico." Oaxaca is one of the most biologically and culturally diverse regions in Mexico, echoed throughout The Food and Life of Oaxaca in both the recipes and the accompanying essays. Martinez adamantly insists that to cook a dish, you must first understand it. She provides not only the how-to of a recipe, but also the why. In the chapter on moles, she provides seven outstanding recipes and explains beautifully why the sauces predominate Oaxacan cuisine. Her section on tamales is simply one of the best available, providing solid instruction and Oaxacan variations of the traditional Mexican party food. Chefs new to Mexican cuisine will find the glossary of ingredients indispensable. And any chef will find Martinez's passion for her subject inspiring.--Mark O. Howerton
Book Description
Praise for The Food and Life of Oaxaca
"There's a whole new and surprising world of flavor and texture contrasts described in this intriguing cookbook, along with lore and history of the exotic and artistic Oaxaca. No one is better equipped than Zarela to present clear and delectable recipes for the tantalizing dishes of this little-known regional cuisine."
— Mimi Sheraton, author of The Whole World Loves Chicken Soup
"I've watched Zarela weave her culinary magic from the first dinner party I attended at her home, beginning with intensely flavored salsas presented in lava bowls. How apt that a chef who prepares such dazzling Mexican food should lead us through Oaxaca. The soul and lore of this magical place will add new life to your table through Zarela's recipes."
—Shelia Lukins, author of USA Cookbook, Food Editor of Parade Magazine
"Food in Mexico, especially in Oaxaca, smacks of so much more than trends and nutrition. Zarela Martínez knows this passionately and has bestowed on us a book that will enrich the lives of all that are really hungry, all that are seeking more than the latest flavor. Filled with honest glimpses of an extraordinary place, The Food and Life of Oaxaca offers the most intimate understanding anyone can gain of another culture—the understanding that comes through flavor. For many in Oaxaca, eating is the perfect act of celebration, consecrating every aspect of life. The warm flavors Zarela Martínez has captured here are the perfect expression of Oaxaca's generous spirit."

Customer Reviews:
a bit too pure oaxacan for my purchasing area.......2003-08-02
I like to buy unusual cookbooks. When I saw the word Oaxaca I wasn't even sure what part of the world it belongs too. Then I saw a special on Food TV about Oaxaca, and I got interested and went back to the cookbooks I had seen.
This cookbook strives for purity of recipes. Sadly, we don't live in Oaxaca, so the ingrediants are unavailable here.
The book is a nicely bound hardback, with a lot of interesting text on what life in Oaxaca is like. I had a good time reading it, and I'm glad I bought it, but it will be difficult for me to locate many of the ingrediants, even with the specialty stores on the internet now.
Excellent recipes, but rather condescending.......2000-10-21
I found the recipes, especially those of moles, to be excellent when prepared. The text is very straightforward and the descriptions of techniques and spices was very helpful. One thing that kept detracting my attention was the sometimes condescending tone that many of the necessary ingredients will never (or rarely) be found 'north of the border,' and thus the approximations that we Americans must make will never measure up to real Oaxacan cuisine. A rather disturbing little quirk in an othewise excellent cookbook.
An intimate journey of Food and Tradition!.......1999-08-27
Details. What I love about Zarela's writing is her attention to details. The recipes and stories inspired me to take a trip to Oaxaca. I garden and was looking for the elusive Oregano de Oaxaca! I will share this with you; If you are going to Oaxaca just to sample the food, there is no need. Cook the recipes. You are there! This book is worth it's weight in love!
These recipes really impressed my Oaxacan husband !.......1999-08-10
Many practical recipes can be found in this book and they are good for. Probably the best part of the book is the Basics of Oaxacan Cooking, including an explanation of different chiles and techniques. My favorite recipe is "Gallina en Tesmole". The yellow and green mole recipes are also excellent. I have impressed many Oaxaquenos with recipes from this book, and I am just learning to cook Mexican-style. Highly recommended!
A wonderful book about a magical place........1998-08-16
This book captures the true spirit of the State and City of Oaxaca better than anything that I have read. It describes the diverse subcultures that make up that magic that is felt there and gives insight into the reasons those cultures survived through the past hundreds of years. Since food is an important part of that, or any other culture, the book does an outstanding job of presenting this aspect as well. As a long time visitor to the area I would rate this book as important for anyone who anticipates visiting there.

Book Description
This mammoth catalog of American furniture manufacturers shows, for the first time in modern publication, the styles of furniture available at the height of the 1920's, a pivotal period between Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and the Depression as 1932 was the very worst year in the history of the furniture industry and most of the companies that failed did so in the four years between 1928 and 1932. Therefore, this catalog remains as the single sourcebook for the products of American furniture companies of this era. Room settings of the period are shown as well as color charts of wood showing the standard finishes of the period. These will be a great help to people restoring furniture to its original color. Thousands of furniture forms are displayed with descriptive commentary facts, and a few original prices. In this edition, a price guide is included for estimating values in the current marketplace. This exciting reference book should become a useful tool for interior decorators, furniture historians, collectors, dealers and restorers working with early twentieth-century designs.

Found a place? Read this book!.......2006-08-27
Terry has done such a great job of encouraging the keeper of the home to make it 1) beautiful to the senses, 2) beautiful to God, and 3) inviting to others. I wanted to try every idea I read in her book all at once after I read it! She does a good job of categorizing each room in the house and giving several practical suggestions that help make that area come alive with beauty. There aren't any photos in the book, though, so you may as well order a used copy in good condition because the key is just getting the written advice she provides. Enjoy!
Creating a Sensational Home.......2002-07-03
For Me and my artist senses, this book is a modern writting of Edith Schaeffer's " The Hidden Art of Homemaking". I enjoyed the way Terry put this book together. Helping you, think through logically, each room of your home and all your senses, that make home, feel like home. I have used this book as part of my homeschool curriculum, for Home economics for my girls, high school level class. This book is easy to read in format, and fun to re-browse through from time to time to re-stimulate your thoughts, when you begin to feel "What is the missing spark in my home right now?". I highly recommend it, for those of us that want to thoughtfully consider what makes us comfortable, what will make this My "Home Sweet Home". She doesn't approach this from a predigested comercial feel... All the members of your household are considered through practicality to create a warm and loving home design. I pray this book will stay on the market for many others to discover for a long time to come!
This is one of my favorite books........2000-05-30
Terry Willits' book is similar to Alexandra Stoddard's book Living a Beautiful Life. Terry shows readers how to awaken their five senses by making things in their homes look, sound, feel, smell, and taste wonderful. She emphasizes creating a God-centered home and focuses on using the beauty of our homes to nurture the people we love. I enjoyed this book and didn't want it to end. It's a must-read!
Book Description
For the first time ever a monograph dedicated to the temporary projects and personal designs created by world-renowned architect Enric Miralles.
A quick perusal of the pages makes it patently clear that for Miralles the word temporary could never be synonymous with minor. From the design of the pergolas in the Olympic Village in Barcelona to the changing sets of an Opera that premiered in his own studio each work is a celebration of space, time and movement. 16 projects are featured.

Book Description
From the late 1870's until 1930, Juan Lorenzo Hubbell traded at Ganado, Arizona, in Navajo country. While Euro-Americans viewed him as the dean of Indian traders in the Southwest, Navajo sentiment varied.
J.L. Hubbell's life story tells the larger tale of the settlement of the West, the reservation trader, and the Indian economy. Marths Blue's ethnobiography weaves the conflicts and complexities of the Southwest into Hubbell's life: the Navajos' repatriation and economic recovery, the sera of the reservation trader in frontier history, the tourist explosion wrought by the Santa Fe Railway and the Fred Harvey Company. It also explores Arizona's quest for statehood, water development in its desert plateau country, the transition of the Navajo blanket to rug, and the image-makers' (artists, writers and photographers) portrayals of the Southwest.
Drawing on historical documents, oral histories, and archival materials, Blue presents a fascinating tapestry of character and place richly illustrated by over 100 photographs and maps. Her portrait of Juan Lorenzo Hubbell positions him squarely in the gallery of the West's prominent men.

Indian Trader: the Life and Times of J. L. Hubbell.......2000-04-15
This new book by Ms Blue is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the Indian trader of the Southwest or indeed of the Southwest itself or of the Navajo people. For anyone who has visited the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, at Ganado, you will feel as if you can indentify with the places mentioned. Ms Blue's long connection with the Navajo people gives her a great viewpoint from which to approach this subject.
