Ok, after my review of the first book you are asking why I bothered to read the second. A friend assured me that the books get better and I agree. This one was somewhat better than the first. I am getting past the similarities to the Stephanie Plum series.
The STIFF and the dead is a most appropriate title..........2006-06-30
...seeing that we follow Pauline in her investigation
for prescription fraud - Viagra being stolen and bought
by some of the seniors.
Pauline is none too happy that she's back in nurse's
scrubs, but Jagger is back, and has her covered with the
help of his myriad collection of disguises. Pauline's
having to be in her own disguise, this time around,
is too much fun, as is the Casanova of the senior center
who keeps trying to hit on her.
And let's not forget movie star material, Nick, whom
Pauline gets a tad closer to in this book with
hilarious results.
I'm thoroughly addicted to this series, and am now
reading ONE DEAD UNDER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. This one is
a little more serious and deeper, with darker undertones
than the other two, but no less entertaining.

I wanted to love this book! A huge fan of romantic mysteries, I saw the teaser about this series and couldn't wait to dig in. In the end, I was disappointed. It's far too close to Stephanie Plum without Stephanie's realness or Evonovich's voice.

I read in bed at night and found myself trying not to laugh out loud to wake my husband. That's hard to do while reading this book! I highly recommend it!

Lori only gets better.......2005-11-04
I read The Stiff and the Dead before reading Lori's first book A Dose of Murder, and I can only say that Lori only gets better.
Pauline only gets funnier in this book as she is desperate to prove to everyone that she really can be good at what she does..because she is determined.
Jagger is back once again and is sexier than in her first book. Nick makes a bigger appearance in this book and leaves us hoping he will make another appearance in her other books.
Goldie and Miles are better than before leaving you laughing out loud. Throw in Pauline's other family members and you have a unforgettable cast of characters that leaves you hanging for more.
This book has the hidden romance, the suspense and laughter that almost anyone could enjoy. I look forward to all of the Pauline Sokol mysteries.

This book kept me interested and offers another great depiction of a Messianic figure taking the world by storm. It's a bit less realistic than Messiah, and I would recommend reading Messiah over Kalki. But if you've already read Messiah and want more, check this one out.
The story, overall, moves pretty fast and keeps you guessing. Down to the last page you won't know what's going to happen next.
Master of understatement, Vidal's novel is deeply disturbing.......2004-05-01
I cannot tell you what is deeply disturbing about this novel in regards to the actual plot without giving much of it away--which would be a crime and a half for a novel of this punch. Suffice it to say that despite the fact that Vidal puts enough aspects of 70s culture into it to make it fresh and new for when it was written, it carries even more power--and becomes even more disturbing--when read in our new millenium; almost as much as it would have had I read it in 1999.
There is a woman named Teddy Ottinger: feminist, an aviatrix extraordinaire, divorced mother of two; longing to step into the shoes of her immortal hero Amelia Earhart, even at the expense of the emotional lives of her children, for whom she has little true maternal feelings and little more than a contempt for her ex-husband that had to have been there latently when she married him. Cold, but searching for love and warmth in the arms of both lesbian women and men--and something of meaning in her life via French philosophy--she is summoned to the world of Kalki, the tenth avatar of the god Vishnu, harbringer of the end of the world. But he may also be someone else; a someone else that could make this entire fantasy world she is seemingly caught up in a dangerous lie. Or, he could simply be Kalki, and the world must prepare for the End...
Vidal channels Mark Twain in our century like he always does and creates a novel of social criticism with a style and expertise of which few in history have ever equalled. But with this novel he weaves essential Hinduism and the CIA into it in a way that makes one question not just American society, but reality itself. In two hundred plus pages Vidal will have you sitting on the edge of the bed at two o'clock in the morning with this novel, not being able to put it down, yet being afraid to read the final chapters.
And make no mistake, the final chapters will blow your mind.
I highly recommend this one.
Another Bull's Eye for the AMAZING Gore Vidal!.......2004-03-08
It would be tough to find a writer with such a huge range as the great Gore Vidal in this or any other time! KALKI is surely one his "breezy", less difficult reads, but it scores on every play! The story of a deranged ex-Vietnam vet who metamorphsizes into a huge Hindu cult leader takes direct aim at the super- commercial media society, cults and apocalyptic religions in general, government agencies, ultra feminism, and about any other hyped up cant of the 1970's , or 2000's. It's ultimate message is horrific, especially relevent today. All written in the amusing, satiric, deadpan style of the incredible Mr. Vidal..In short, a bizarre, all too possible, fable for all of us, for all time.
That '70s Book.......2003-12-22
KALKI is very much a product of its time. And, as that time was the late '70s, one can see that the book is obsessed with many of the same things that other products of that era were fascinated by. The main protagonist is a female, she's an avowed feminist, she's overtly bisexual, she's an airplane test pilot, she constantly thinks about Amelia Earhart, and her autobiography was a rejection of motherly values, ghost-written by a man selected by her publishing company.
The rest of the story is similarly '70s in flavor. An Eastern/Hindu religious sect is claiming that their god Kalki has been reincarnated in the form of an ex-army soldier from the American Midwest. Their scripture claims that when Kalki returns to ride the white horse, the world will end soon afterwards; only the chosen few will survive. Naturally, since this is the '70s, everyone on the planet becomes obsessed with the Kalki story. The newsmagazine show, "60 Minutes" produces an unusually long segment investigating the Kalki phenomenon. Even Walter Cronkite gets into the act, making an amused comment on the impending end of the world.
In between the references to Watergate and the mentions of Ronald Reagan, there's a very effective religious satire going on here. Gore Vidal paints his satirical strokes a little broad at times, but when he focuses, the story soars. Fun is poked at, not only the religious cults that were springing up at the time, but many aspects of pop culture. Some of the jokes still apply today, of course. In fact, were this book to be written now, many of the shots at television news coverage wouldn't need to be changed at all.
Although the book seems most concerned with its satire, it also works extremely well as straight adventure/thriller. A genuinely enjoyable story, I simply could not figure out what direction it was going to go in next. The gothic tone of the ending slips in nicely after the whimsy of the beginning and middle. Vidal manages to get the balance of comedy and drama just right. Some moments are laugh out loud funny, while a page later one will be faced with sudden and utter horror.
Heavy Handed Plot.......2003-02-22
The plot overwhelmed this story, turning some fine characters into unbelievable stick people, reducing them to comic book figures. One gets involved with the bisexual narrator, Teddy, only to see the rug pulled from beneath her as she is surreptitiously pulled into a conspiracy to destroy mankind (including her two young kids!). Give me a break. It doesn't rescue the story to call it a satire-satire of what? Doomsday prophets? I enjoyed the zany cast with their double personalities until they were forced to cope with the dystopian horror ending. I don't think anyone could remain sympathetic or interested in such a cast of characters. Yes, the Kelly/Kalki character took mental illness to new heights in believing himself to be a trinity of Hindu gods, creators, preservers and destroyers but all he really did was immolate himself to Vidal's rather ridiculous plot. Is Gore asking us here-look ma, no hands-see what a ludicrous story I can tell?

Italian Satisfying and Delicious.......2007-02-13
I've only owned this book for a little more than a month, yet it has, along with Marcella Hazan's wonderful, Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, become a continual source of information and inspiration. As other reviewers have stated, the photos are superb and tempt us into the particular dish. The book is well laid out, the recipes clear and well written. I enjoy reading a good cookbook cover to cover, as the authors tend to impart small gems and develop connecting tissue between recipes, and this fine book is no different - that's how I found her tomato salad.

A Must Cook Book For Those Who Love Italian Food.......2004-12-28
I must admit that I own more cookbooks by Joyce Goldstein than any other author. I read them cover to cover. I am an experienced home chef and always learn new things from her books. I find they not only contain well written recipes but are educational and interesting.
Italian Slow and Savory is a wonderful cookbook that covers territory not found in many other Italian cookbooks I have seen. The introduction contains brief descriptions of the cuisine and wine from each of the Italian regions.
The selected recipes are from both well and lesser known regions. They are well written, easy to follow, and accurate with informative introductions. Notes at the end of each recipe provide specific wine recommendations with descriptions of the wine and information as to why the wines work with the dish.
Some of my particular favorite recipes include: Braised Tuna with Tomato, Garlic, and Mint from the Island of Favigna; Farro with Butternut Squash and Chestnuts from Tuscany; Sardinian Clam Soup with Fregola; and Agnello Brucialingua (Lamb to Burn Your Tongue) from the Abruzzo. Over the winter, I look forward to trying many of the stews and braising recipes using lamb and pork shoulder.
Italian Slow and Savory has been the perfect holiday gift for my friends and family who love to cook (both experienced and inexperienced home chefs) and are interested in Italian cuisiine.
My new favorite cookbook.......2004-12-20
I own too many Italian cookbooks, so I wasn't looking for another one, but my my sister gave me Joyce Goldstein's Italian Slow and Savory and I love it. In fact, it's now my favorite. Given my aforementioned Italian cookbook habit, that is saying a lot.
The author has traveled extensively through Italy and the recipes reflect an excellent palate and impressive knowledge of Italy's culinary history. Yet these aren't the same recipes that you see in other cookbooks over and over again. I'm a fairly experienced home cook, but I have little patience for over-produced dishes. Slow and Savory translates to easy and delicious. Also this is a beautiful book. The photographs are stunning and I love the way the recipes are laid out on the page. This is a cookbook I will use over and over again and will give as gifts-even to my friends who have too many cookbooks.

For those who were fortunate to be regulars at Joyce Goldstein's Square One restaurant in San Francisco in the 1980s-90s, her cookbooks are a wonderful way to stay attached to this brilliant chef and her art. She was a leader in merging Mediterranean and California cuisine and continues to emphasize the best of Italy especially.
Like all of Goldstein's cookbooks, this new one, "Italian Slow and Savory, is full of delicious, authentic recipes; a very readable and well-researched history of the cultural and social basis of the cuisine; and a celebration of the flavors - the foods and wines of each region of Italy. The recipes are easy-to-follow; the ingredients are readily available and not expensive, and there are suggestions for the wines to serve with each dish. This is a perfect book for the novice cook as well as for the most experienced cook and most seasoned traveler to Italy.
`Italian Slow and Savory' truly gives the reader the opportunity to cook and eat the way Italians do. For most of its history much of Italy has been poor, and the dishes of most regions reflect the poverty which gave rise to great creativity. It takes real talent to make the meager grain and vegetable and the scarcity of meat and fat into the most savory heart-warming dishes we see in this book. There is plentiful color photography of the dishes to make your mouth water.
The book is organized by food type. We won't list all of our favorite recipes, but here are a few: the artichoke recipes, the entire chapter on grains, the fish soups and stews, and the Parmigiano di Zucca.

A bit disappointed.......2005-04-09
This book has some good advice when it comes to looking at stabling from your horse's point of view (he'd rather be out in a field, rolling in mud than be shiny clean and locked in a stall all day). However, I was disappointed that it didn't go into more detail in other areas. For example, I thought it was strange that the topic of sheath cleaning was never even mentioned. The author tries to address horse behavior and the horse-human relationship, but I think it was handled a bit awkwardly, as large portions of the text seem to be directly copied from Pat Parelli's book. The author acknowledges that she does this, but I just didn't like how it was done. The book was also a bit awkward because the author is apparently from Great Britain and parts of the book seemed to assume that the reader is also. I ran into some terms that I, being American, was not familiar with. But like I said before, the book does contain some good advice and I did learn a few things from it, just not as much as I had hoped.
Think like a horse.......2005-02-12
This book uniquely offers equine advice from the perspective of the horse - this is most unique in the stabling/turn out advice. The author also goes into detail about how relationships can be built with the horse, from horse to horse (or other animal) and how those relationships change over their lifetime and a caring touch to loss. In addition to useful information, the author keeps it interesting with lots of pictures/illustrations. This book is not an all-inclusive equine textbook, but it has that "something" the others do not.

If you want to impact your knowledge of the earth and the power of working with Nature buy this book. Viktor Schauberger was a man way ahead of his time. If you want to be a master of the earth, buy this book along with: Secrets of the Soil : New Solutions for Restoring Our Planet by Peter Tompkins, Christopher Bird and any books by Phil Callahan. In the near future the information in these books will be mandatory for anyone in farming.
Our Senseless Toil.......2001-05-24
I had to use a title from one of the books' opening chapters. This book is going to annoy some people. Callum Coats presents Viktor Schuaberger's theories in a modern light. The laws of Nature, Questions for Science, Nature as Teacher, the fish-eagle, the swing, the trout, the ox, dancing logs and stones, the Genesis of water, the coming bio-technical age, the secret of the egg form...these are elucidated...then comes the fun stuff... the age-old secret of the atom, implosive breathing, life-force and animated breathing, is there perpetual motion (?), organic syntheses, the false world view, the mechanical equivelant of heat, plasmolytic motion; this volume gives tremendous insight into what is happening in the world, today, and practical solutions on HOW we may yet save our world. Most telling is Schauberger's innane gut feelings on the powers at work in the environment, and living water. Hey, it's only volume two of the series. Get all four, and see how these books will influence YOU to change the way we look at the earth.

This should be required reading for anyone studying any type of science. Anyone studying engineering should read this- it will probably make you feel stupid, but ultimately it will give a direction to pursue your field in a way that does not destroy the planet- though it will destroy the compromised and demoralized status quo if followed. It is not for everyone. Some people, especially technocrats may be annoyed by its contents.
Victor describes his experiences with nature and how he gained his knowledge about water, levitation and many other things.
His insights go well beyond the boundaries of contemporary science, because they deal in the realm of the higher worlds. I would recommend anyone who wants to understand Victors writings to read Steiner's "How to know higher worlds".
Victor describes the technology of the higher worlds.
These are not books, that you can consume. They will transform you. It may happen that you read and then put them aside for 10 years or so. But you WILL come back to them, because they teach you the deepest truth.

I liked this book because it dealt with physics and metaphysics. Such subjects as the creation of life, natures plans, and personal experiences with understanding nature. At the beginning it was difficult to understand but as reading progresses it becomes easier. The author, obviously a genius, is indeed a rare talent.

2006 & Still hoping and waiting..........2006-10-07
As you may have already guessed...the book is still not out yet. As you can see by the reviews below Sam Kieth's work is long in coming and greatly looked forward to. There is no offical word on why or when and news on the book has reached a dead end long ago. But, if it does come up this is the best site on the net for all his work...

It has the most complete news and works he is done and are going to do.
Currently, he is working at DC again doing another Batman comic mini-series. Batman is DC royality, but if you know Sam Kieth's work...his pen is way too good for that cape.
Till then...drop a line maybe we can all push for it.

This book should be great when it eventually comes out based on the sampling found in the limited to 500 Sam Kieth sketchbook that's out now. It has Kieth finished art and sketches of the Maxx, Wolverine vs Venom, Sandman, Hulk, and more. Worth checking out on auction sites if you can't wait for the this.

Only In Dreams..........2004-02-26
The Art of Sam Kieth is hopefully going to be published but it was not released, obviously, when it was supposed too. SamKieth.com lists it as still active and Sam insists that it was his fault for not compiling things, but rumors has it that the publisher goofed and he wasn't happy with the packaging or the price. So look for a later release in perhaps 2005-06

STANDING UP NEXT 2 A MOUNTAIN.......2007-05-29
It is true that life is what we make of it but it is only true for those who are equipped with the tools of knowledge. William Lee Brent's Long Time Gone speaks of a reality so much truer for so many of us and a fantasy for so many others. Brent's story is one that seeks not a perfect truth or idealistic escapisms. It is a man's longing for basic human rights in an American environment which he did not create but was imprisoned in. The hijacking of a TWA flight to Cuba is not where you will find the adventure/richness in Brent's story but it is the fork in the road that leads to his inner perspective, closure and true freedom while in Cuba. The strength of Long Time Gone is not in the fact that it is unapologetic but that it is about redemption and that is something that often lacks in those individuals who have the convenience of a two way ticket.

This great American has just now passed. Please do service to his memory by studying his memoirs. Learn to be free. Learn the way of the Samarai.
Remember the revolution which was to be and which inevitably shall come, thanks to Bush's increased inequities and injustices. REmember those elderly and infirm drowned in New Orleans, and those who go without jobs, housing, health and education, without clean air and water and opportunity.

This is real life on pages. A vivid look into the life of a Black Man in the dark ages of American History. This book Takes you through life in the south, on the west coast, in and out of prison and finally getting involved with the Black Panthers during a period of turmoil. He feels finally something positive to dedicate his life to. Something worth fighting and dying for. Out on bail after being in a shootout with San Francisco police, knowing there was no JUSTICE in American courts for Blacks, He weights his options,to face a prejudice judge & jury, or escape while he could. intense!!!!!

"I was always afraid," he said "but I never let fear stop me from doing what I needed to do." Face fear and do what you believe in is the gist of 'Long Time Gone'. This excellent read will engage you, regardless of what side of the tracks you were born.
I met Bill Brent in Havana, Cuba and saw in his 70-year-old eyes a man with an unique story to tell. I recognized that age had not robbed him of his forceful character, a character that had been sculpted like a rock buffeted by external forces. That day in March 2001, we talked, reminiscenced and slowly sipped our Cuba Libres in his apartment. Though I had not known Bill Lee Brent before this moment, there was a kindred spirit. A common "yes," that comes from struggling against external forces in life, and if not prevailing, at least surviving against odds. We consciously wasted away our afternoon, sharing stories about the lives we both have lived, confirming often the overlapping experiences we both went through during the sixties.
From his dirt-poor childhood in the South during the thirties and early forties, to his street days and hard jail time through the fifties, Brent's engaging writing never slacks or whines. He struggles to rise above the sludge that he was born into; but he was never released by the downward pull of destiny. Finally, in the sixties, he joined the radical Black Panthers. He rose to the rank of captain and was the bodyguard of Eldride Cleaver.
His honest, but critical, look inside the Black Panthers: what they stood for, how they changed, and, when Bill Brent needed them, how they turn their backs on him; is a story that for history's sake needs to be told. Bill Brent was radical, yes; revolutionary, sure; and deliberate without a doubt. So, it should have come to no one's surprise that while awaiting trial for shooting three Oakland policemen, when he saw an out, he would take it. In July, 1969 William Lee Brent hijacked TWA Flight 151 from Oakland to Havana, Cuba and has never left Cuba since. As we were parting company, he looked at me and said, ""You always keep what you need handy and you always dream." This is his fascinating memoir. Recommended
