Book Description
Zigzagging the country in a mini-Winnie means endless adventure-and Maxie McNabb is always up for something new. So she and her dog, Stretch, head for the heat of New Mexico, where Maxie plans to learn how to weave. But everything changes for the sleepy town when a local woman attempts suicide. A casualty of her husband's mid-life crisis, she was replaced by a newer, sexier model. And to top it off, a sleazy conman has set his sights on her. Maxie may be on vacation, but she's determined to help the poor thing. With her nose for trouble, she'll leave no mesa unturned until she brings two dogs to justice-neither of whom is Stretch.

Maxie & Stretch books.......2007-08-22
I very much enjoy reading Sue Henry's books featuring Jessie and Alex, but the Maxie and Stretch stories are quite interesting to read. Can you imagine roaming across the United States at 64 with a dog and in a motor home? I can't, but I envy anyone who could. Makes for a pleasant storyline.
Lovely!.......2007-04-22
Sue Henry's Alaskan mysteries are great favorites of mine, but I knew nothing about her Maxie McNabb and Stretch mysteries. What a find!
This lovely, lightweight tale finds sixty-something Maxie McNabb, a widow, and her wonderful dachshund Stretch in their "minnie winnie" (a small Winebago) touring the American Southwest. It made me want to pack up and go to Taos immediately, the description of the countryside was that vivid, and not at all like a travelogue.
Anyway, while exploring the world of weaving (also fascinating), Maxie inadvertently gets herself mixed up with the mysterious Shirley, who may or may not have attempted suicide, and then becomes a target herself of murderous killers she does not know. As mentioned above, the mystery is light and doesn't take itself too seriously, and it all gets wound up in about 3 complicated pages that leave more questions than answers, but who cares?
There are mentions of our Alaskan heroine Jessie, and Butch, a character from the Alaska mysteries, puts in an appearance. All in all, I was delighted with this book, and look forward to the next, just published.
A Maxie McNabb adventure.......2007-02-25
Intrepid senior citizen, Maxie McNabb has set off once again in her Winnebago, accompanied by her mini dachshund, Stretch. This time she is intent on exploring areas of New Mexico and makes a stop at the town of Taos. A chance encounter with a strange woman who was rescued from death by asphixiation in her car, leads Maxie to offer her a bed for the night. She confides in Maxie that she was recently taken in by a con man who stole $100,000 from her and absolutely denies attempting suicide. Maxie becomes very interested in weaving after seeing an exhibition in the town's gallery but is horrified to learn that a man's body was found in a vat of the dye used to colour the wools used in weaving. What follows is is a collection of things that could only happen to Maxie...a burglary, a kidnapping, a murder/suicide...altogether too much for a woman in her 60's to cope with...chipper as she is! It's an ok read but has a lot of scenic padding to fill it out.
Lots of fluff, not much substance.......2007-02-23
I loved Maxie and Stretch in the 2 prior books in which they were characters, but this book was very disappointing. I normally like details of the characters' environment, but this book contained page after page of details, such as mentioning each business establishment Maxie passed as she walked along, each diagonal or right turn she took... and almost none of the things she passed was ever mentioned again. There was a very small percentage of words that actually were related to clues or information concerning the mystery / mysteries that Maxie eventually solved. I love New Mexico, have travelled there regularly, and have been to Taos, but this book contained way too much filler and very little relevant or even interesting material. And I was fool enough to buy the hardcover version, being so eager to read more of Maxie and Stretch!
Maxie & Stretch are at it again........2007-02-13
Once again Sue Henry has taken the RV Road to adventure. This time to beautiful Taos, New Mexico where she becomes involved in yet another mystery. I love this newest character she had created. Having RV'd many of the miles Maxie covers, I appreciate the detail and accuracy given to the surroundings. A quick and delightful read!

Jimi, your musical legacy continues [no spoilers].......2004-03-21
"The Day of the Dissonance" is the amusing third volume in the Spellsinger adventure about Jon-Tom and colleague Mudge.
Back cover of book:
Fantastic Voyage
Clothahump, the wizard, is dying. End back cover of book.
The reader is introduced to new individuals while most characters outside of Mudge and Clothahump are given notable mentions. I found Roseroar particularly appealing as a character whereas Mudge and his occasional juvenile antics bordered on bothersome (but I still love the little otter). With a wide selection of idiosyncrasies to choose from, parallel personalities are available for every species. The ending left a huge impression on me 20 years ago and I wasn't disappointed.
As a fan of the classical, rock, and heavy metal music genres, I find the magic Jon-Tom creates with his duar exciting since I believe a well-constructed song can affect people with its intensity and power in a primal aspect.
Thank you.
Good for teenagers.......2002-04-04
I read this series for the first time as a teenager, and I have to note with some sadness that I think it's definitely lost stars for me as an adult reader.
The premise of the Spellsinger series is that an aspiring singer/lawyer (Jon-Tom) is pulled into an alternative universe where all animals except lizards can talk and think and he has magical powers as a spellsinger. But since all he knows are rock songs from our western world, his results are occasionally unpredicatable.
In this book, Jon-Tom has to go searching for medicine for his mentor Clothahump. On the way he picks up a 7-foot high white tiger, his irascable companion Mudge, and a teenage street kid named Folly. Hilarity and mayhem ensues.
The spellsinger books are light on the realism and heavy on the humor. Note that many of the jokes are dependent on knowing pop culture from the 80s. I laughed at the Def Leppard jokes. Current teens may not get them.
In vain hope I pray for more Spellsinger novels..........1999-10-27
There is a rather ludicrous sense of majesty surrounding the Spellsinger series. A sometimes comic, sometimes morbid world where the imagination of one obvious rock fan can proceed uninhibited by the averages of fantasy guidelines. Mr. Foster, accidently, I believe, created a bit of a masterpiece when he sculpted the first of the Spellsinger series, which has, all the way through it's last installment, Chorus Skating, supplied new and various dishes for those travelers on this world which the offer never bothers to identify. This book, in particular, captures the sheer ridiculousness and fun at the heart of the Spellsinger series; it's a kind of jovial feeling you sense that the characters would partake of as well, were they confronted with this astounding piece of literature. Now, all I want to know is...will there be any more? : ) I can only pray and hope!
Jon-Tom's having female problems..........1999-10-16
There are a few lyrics to the Eagle's 'Take it Easy' that would fit this book: the love of Jon-Tom's life has gotten cold feet and run off; he tries to get himself out of a jam and conjures up a seven foot tigress that's a little bit sweet on him; and he meets a pretty girl that really wants to be his friend - too bad she's jailbait! And to top it all off, Mudge gets into trouble with the ladies at every turn.
funniest one of the spellsinger series.......1998-07-09
Took me not more than two days to read it. Think I'm addicted. Characters sometimes puzzeling, nevertheless welldone. What surprised me most, was the ending. Thats the kind of humor I really like about Foster.

Book Description
Finally, here is a lifelong, livable eating program that controls insulin and leads to long-term weight loss without forbidding readers' favorite foods. More than 95 percent of the authors' patients have successfully lost weight and maintained it with the program, which links carbohydrates with the right amount of protein for maximum weight loss.
If you are struggling with weight loss, you are not alone. Two out of three Americans are now considered overweight even though so many of us are forever counting calories and fat grams. But as Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman explain, a medical condition called insulin resistance may be the cause of your weight-loss woes.
A complex relationship exists between food, blood sugar, insulin, and fat. Insulin helps the body transform food into energy and regulate blood sugar levels. When we eat carbohydrates, the body breaks them down into sugar (glucose) to be used as energy. If you have more glucose than your body needs, your body will respond by producing more insulin: the insulin will stabilize your blood sugar level by storing the excess glucose as fat, and this means weight gain. This process is accelerated in people with insulin resistance because they have higher baseline levels of insulin.
So, is the solution to insulin resistance omitting carbohydrates from our diet? Such a diet is neither healthy nor satisfying. Carbohydrates are our bodies' main source of energy and are an excellent source of both antioxidants, which help prevent disease, and fiber, which is essential for proper digestion. Our natural desire for carbohydrates would be difficult to deny. The Insulin-Resistance Diet offers an alternative.
The Insulin-Resistance Diet is really not a diet book at all--it's an eating guide. It allows you to eat all the foods you like in the proper amounts and still control insulin resistance and lose weight. Inside you will find the following features:
- Link-and-Balance Eating Method--links and balances carbohydrates with the right amount of protein at the right time for maximum weight loss
- Self-tests--to determine if you have insulin resistance and to check your progress with linking and balancing
- Food lists--include most foods and serving sizes
- Real-world strategies--provide complete meal plans and snack ideas, lists of name-brand convenience foods, and linked-and-balanced restaurant items
- Recipes--more than forty-five delicious, healthful, and easy-to-make recipes
These features together with in-depth sections on fitness and on understanding our relationship with food comprise a total weight-loss and weight-management program--one that is simple to follow and guarantees success.

glad I ordered it(Insulin Resistant Diet).......2007-10-10
The Insulin resisant diet gave me alot of missing links iin my daily food budget. the book has shown me a smarter easier way to budget my eating and make a lifestyle change that I can stick with .I highly recommend this book to other diabetics having a problem losing weight.
Teaches the RIGHT way to eat!.......2007-09-17
I wouldn't call this an 'Diet' book, this is an educational book. It teaches how to eat and what to eat, that there are good and bad carbs, and that we NEED carbs!...and protein, and veggies, fruit,...you know...that balanced diet thing that no one gets anymore!! This book will suprise you and alarm you at the same time. The foods you thought were helping you lose weight really aren't, they may even be putting the pounds on...even to the point of threatening your health! It's worth the read and the re-read.
If you implement this; it will work!.......2007-09-12
I admit I was skeptical in the beginning, but after being on this "diet" (more like a way of life) I have lost 20 pounds. I am extremely delighted with my progess.
I have PCOS with insulin resistance and most diets don't work, but this has showed me I don't have to be hungry and I don't have to cut all my carbs.
I have noticed my cravings are almost completely non-exsistant. I used to have to have a snack at night, but now, after dinner I'm good to go.
I think the book is written extremely well and can be applied to any lifestyle. It even has a list for fast food restaurants for the people that can't avoid being on the go.
If you are struggling to lose weight because of insulin resistance; get this book. If you implement the methods you will most certainly lose weight.
This Book Changed My Life.......2007-09-02
Do you ever say this? "I'm just not enjoying myself enough to weigh this much!" If so, you probably know that there's some secret somewhere that explains why you keep gaining weight.
The authors of "The Insulin Resistance Diet" have found that secret and share it with the world. If you suffer from insulin resistance, then you know how frustrating it is to always be hungry, to always deny yourself, to exercise faithfully, and yet to see the scale creep up and up and up.
Plenty of doctors recognize that insulin resistance is a problem that causes people to gain weight beyond the "calorie balance theory." But Dr. Cheryle Hart and registered dietician Mary Kay Grossman have developed a solution for this problem. Even better, their solution is easy to follow, not just today, but for a lifetime.
On a personal note, I'm over fifty and have seen my weight go up and down all my life. Ever since a horseback riding accident twelve years ago, I have been completely unable to lose weight. I believe I must have become inuslin resistant at that time.
I am so happy to have found this book. After eight weeks on this program, I've lost twelve pounds. Just as wonderful, I'm experiencing normal hunger instead of constant cravings. My moods are improved, my skin is clearer and my hair is thicker. I've been looking for the secret to weight loss all my life, and I finally found it in this book.
One interesting note: Dr. Hart, both in person and in this book, says that insulin resistance causes weight gain around the waist. I, on the other hand, carry most of my weight below the waist. The first place I lost inches was around my hips and thighs. In other words, "The Insulin Resistance Diet" works even better than they thought it would!
So if you are looking for the secret reason that you keep gaining weight, try this book. It will answer the questions you've been asking your entire life.
Organized and Useful.......2007-08-24
The Insulin-Resistance Diet is easy to understand because the book is clearly written and to the point. The diet works even for people who are
not insulin resistance. The best part about this diet is the variety
of foods and emphasis on healthy foods. I highly recommened it.

Brilliant Novelty Cake Book.......2004-12-23
Lindy Smith is one of the most exciting designers of novelty cakes out there, with a fresh and lively style that exudes innovation and imagination. The cakes here, which are mostly intended for children, are often cute, but never cutesy. Her style is detailed, though she's working in bolder strokes here than in her previous book, "Hobby Cakes", since these are, at least nominally, supposed to be quick cakes. Speed is relative, and here I think that "quick" means that an experienced amateur should be able to decorate each cake in no more than 8-10 hours, but the results are worth the effort.

For Show or Pet.......2002-11-26
Whether you show your dog, or just want him/her to look like a show dog, this is the book for you. As a groomer, I found the book to be a very helpful resource, and I recommend it to anyone interested in Shelties.
ALOT OF DETAIL.......2002-06-03
This is a very informative book for the "newbie" in the world of Sheltie Show grooming. I don't see it really being for the typical pet owner however. Probably too much detail and more than they would want to know! It is really for the beginner show person, however I would recommend having someone already experienced teach you, do not just go by the book! :-))
Collie owners can use this book, too.......2001-07-26
Just about every aspect of sheltie grooming can be applied to collie grooming. It can be a challenge looking at an ungroomed collie and not knowing where to start. This book breaks down the whole process into manageable pieces...ear trimming, foot trimming, line brushing and more. A valuable reference book to keep near your grooming table!
The best book available for grooming your sheltie........1997-10-05
For those of you who are interested in making your sheltie look his or her best this is the book to read. Barb, who is a breeder and handler, takes you step by step through the grooming process. It even works for those of us who do not think we have the nack for grooming. P.S. The art work is great too.
Excellent book on grooming Shetland Sheepdogs.......1996-01-19
This book has lots of good information for someone interested
in grooming the sheltie for the conformation ring, or just
wants to learn how to make their pet look their best.

Kenoward - a Personal View : Inspired by Light.......2005-09-05
Ken Howard gives an excellent overview of his career as an artist, and superb insights into his working methods and motivation. There are no step-by-step exercises, which generally stiffle creativity. It is a very good book for all artists.

Moderately Useful.......2005-08-21
As a brief "masterclass", Ken Howards's book is useful as a simple demonstration. However, Howard, is one of those watercolorists who do not exploit the natural white of the paper (the "classic" and best technique), preferring instead to "touch up" finished paintings with chinese white. Thus, some of his pictures have a pasty look that is closer to gouache than to watercolor.
Also, the book is relatively short, so it was frustrating to find that many pages were devoted, not to Howard's watercolors, but to oil and mixed media paintings. The text seems like a direct transcription of the video class which is also available. Hence, the conversational style seems misplaced in a text book. For those looking to be see watercolor pictures of Venice, there are many better books out there. That being said, there is always something to be learned from other painters so I've given it a few stars.

Book Description
Recent scholarship has done much to document the experiences of women in science, but there has been little comparable research on Black Americans' experiences and contributions and even less on Black women scientists. The hardships that Black scientists face are discussed more often than their successes and participation. This volume seeks to foster awareness of the participation of women minorities in the sciences and their contributions to the history of science in America. The biographical sketches examine the lives and career paths of more than 100 Black women scientists.
