Book Description
Dr. Tony Hill and Detective Chief Inspector Carol Jordan return in the award-winning series that is the basis for the hit show on BBC America.
In a small grim room, the body of a woman is discovered, panic and pain etched in her face. The scene matches in every detail a series of murders two years ago-murders that ended when irrefutable forensic evidence secured the conviction of a deeply disturbed young man named Derek Tyler.
But there's no way Tyler could have killed the latest victim. He's been locked up in a mental institution since his trial, barely speaking a word. So is there a copycat?
All his years of experience tell top criminal psychologist Dr. Tony Hill that there isn't-but that would make the murders literally impossible. While Hill tries to crack Tyler, DCI Carol Jordan and her team must mount a desperate undercover operation to trap the murderer-a decision that will have terrible consequences.
As the tension mounts, a mixture of psychological insight and dogged detective work leads inexorably to a terrifying climax where Tony faces one of the most perverse killers he has ever encountered.

High Five.......2007-06-01
It's always a pleasure when I take a chance on a new novelist and it pays off as well as it did here. Val McDermid is, I now know, one of our best writers and I won't hesitate to buy any book in the future with her name on the cover. In The Torment of Others, you'll get everything you want from a thriller and more : intelligent characters, gripping imagery, a powerful plot, clever pacing and just entertainment all round. The lead characters Jordan and Hill are very much individuals whose personalities and concerns are so well described that we almost feel that we know them; the key point is that we can easily believe in them. The side-plot of their 'relationship' is actually intriguing, dealt with subtle aplomb by their creator and cleverly left unfinished within the context of this story so that we can carry on where they left off in the next one. The main story line of this book is quite daringly graphic in its description without being gory for its own sake. It just leaves you wondering "Jeez, what a way to go"...and I'm not a woman! This is a writer of high intellect, vivid imagination and the bringing together of those rare skills makes for very enjoyable reading. Call me a fan.
Another great McDermid book........2007-01-24
This author just keeps doing it. How she can write book after gripping book and sound fresh, suspenseful and compelling is a wonder in today's crime fiction scene. Just read it!
McDermid is always gripping ..........2006-09-15
... and this title is no exception. The continution of the Tony and Carol saga. I highly recommend!
A lot of good can be said about this police procedural.......2006-01-23
I had not read any of Val McDermid's work before this. It seems that a lot has transpired in previous novels that were alluded to time and again, so if there is a novel that proceeds this, you might want to check out that one before starting in on `The Torment of Others'. That aside, I was immediately brought into McDermid's world as a reader. The characters Tony Hill and Carol Jordan have so many demons that are being exorcised that this does not read as though it were just another in a long line of sequels.
There are two mysteries unfolding here. Carol is found at the start of the book taking control of an elite crime fighting force and these are the two first cases that fall under her sphere. Both of these stories are complex enough that you will be left guessing and not quite sure as to where things are going until near the end. Along the way several other side characters are introduced. I think that the plurithura of first person characters that stride through this novel was a bit of a drawback. In my opinion, the fact that McDermid mines not two, but at least six (that I can recall off the top of my head) points of view is a real momentum killer. You never really get to the point where you are on the edge of your seat with this book. I always felt like a disengaged viewer lording over this unfolding event rather than as an immediate participant.
The mood that I gleamed from this book... the over all aura... was sort of like a Patricia Cornwell novel. If you have not read her yet, you are in for a treat. I would highly recommend her work and suggest that you start with her first novel. Otherwise, this book is worth reading, though by no means the best of this genre that I have come across.
Extremely gruesome and extremely hard to put down!.......2006-01-07
I read WIRE IN THE BLOOD and loved it and just finished TORMENT and will have to get everything by McDermid.
This novel is VERY gruesome but the characters and "secondary cases" are so interesting and well-written that you really can't help turning the pages.
Good stuff-- but creepy!
Book Description
Cherished Torment offers the first detailed account of the intellectual foundation of the first prose romance published by a woman in English: The Countess of Montgomery's Urania, written by Lady Mary Wroth, the niece of Sir Philip Sidney. A sophisticated and erudite study, Cherished Torment moves beyond the intriguing and scandalous events of Wroth's personal life that have understandably captivated the attention of many modern readers to a closer look at the latter's masterful integration of the issues fueling her era's political, scientific and philosophical debates.

Excellent! Should be reprinted!.......2002-03-18
I read this book when I was 17. I'm now 30, and think this book is one of the best ever written! =-) This is the story of the Seal tribe King Rad and his best friend Dannoc.
Rad is facing a dilemna... Save his newfound friend, accused of murder, or free him and defy the laws of the tribe. To make matters worse, the animals from the forests surrounding their windswept coastal village seem to be mysteriously disappearing. With game scarce the villagers are growing hungry, and the other tribes are talking of raiding and taking what they want.
The friendship between Rad and Dannoc is very moving. Their quest to save their village and the animals has an epic quality. I recommend this novel for people who like books about heart-moving friendships. Springer writes like a dream.
Don't forget to read MindBond and Godbond, the sequels.
excellent, need trilogy set!!.......2000-10-08
I 1st read these books at the age of 16, following the death of my father. Hard as it may be to understand, this trilogy holds a special standing for me. I was thoroughly entranced and, not suprisingly, depressed through the descriptive direction that Springer took, and it helped me to reach the deeper corners of my own search for reason. I have been looking for 9 years for another set of these books, through used book stores, yard sales, and now the internet. If you have a set I will gladly pay for the books and cost of shipping (within reason). Please contact me at my email address, skplumacher@email.msn.com. Thank you, Nancy Springer, for sharing your madness with the rest of us.
a creation of undescribable beauty.......2000-05-04
in the beginning, i would like to say that madbond (and also the second book, mindbond)are something unique, something you come upon only a few times in a lifetime.as it is, the majority of fantasy-writers are men;i dont know the reason for it, so i am not aout to make wild theories.yet the aforementioned book clearly states, no, shouts that this paticular author, at the least, is in my opinion one of the very best i have ever read and worth standing on a pedestal besides grand-master Tolkien and Donaldson, who had so far been my two favourie fantasy authors. but,on to the book itself.it is a fact that only rarely finds one an author that developes his/her own style of fantasy, instead of plagiarizing tolkien or his numerous "followers".but that is exactly what springer has done.no stray orcs, elves or hobbits are there in the story, and i must confess, it was a relief... the world itself is beautifully created;it is so full of time, of ages past beyond remembering;and the fact that the books seem to take place on the very last days of the world make it even more beauriful-and much more sad.a world where all is unavoidably doomed, which has already lost most of its animals-and men as well-, which very shortly will be a cold and empty place-is there a tale more moving than that?
It rocked my world.......1999-07-31
I really don't know how to describe the book, but I can say that I loved it.
very fine After Armageddon.......1996-07-17
Fine and unconventional fantasy, clearly drawing at least partly on north american indianmyth. Can't be summarised; must be read. In this book, comradeship between men, betrayal.Very fine.

"A bread baker, like any true artisan or craftsman, must have the power to control outcomes," says Peter Reinhart, author of The Bread Baker's Apprentice. "Mastery comes with practice." As in many arts, you must know and understand the rules before you can break them. Reinhart encourages you to learn the science of bread making, but to never forget that vision and experimentation, not formulas, make transcendent loaves. The Bread Baker's Apprentice is broken into three sections. The first is an amusing tale of Reinhart's visit to France and his discovery of pain à l'ancienne, a cold-fermented baguette. The second section comprises a tutorial of bread-making basics and Reinhart's "Twelve Stages of Bread." And finally, the recipes: Ciabatta, Pane Siciliano, Potato Rosemary Bread, New York Deli Rye, Kaiser Rolls, and Brioche, to name a few. All recipes include bread profiles and ingredient percentages. Reimagined for modern bakers, these mouthwatering classic recipes are bound to inspire. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
Co-founder of the legendary Brother Juniper's Bakery in Sonoma, California, author of the landmark books Brother Juniper's Bread Book and Crust & Crumb, and distinguished instructor at the world's largest culinary school, Peter Reinhart has been a leader in America's artisanal bread movement for over fifteen years. Never one to be content with yesterday's baking triumph, however, Peter continues to refine his recipes and techniques in his never-ending quest for perfect bread. In THE BREAD BAKER'S APPRENTICE, Peter shares his latest bread breakthroughs, arising from his recent pilgrimage to study in several of France's famed boulangeries and the always-enlightening time spent in the culinary academy kitchen with his students. First you'll peer over Peter's shoulder as he learns from Paris's most esteemed bakers, people like the brothers Poilâne and Phillippe Gosselin, whose pain ancienne has revolutionized the art of baguette making. Peter then walks readers through the twelve steps of building great bread, his clear instructions accompanied by over 100 step-by-step photographs. Then it's on to over 50 new master formulas for such classic breads as rustic, chewy ciabatta, hearty pain de campagna, old-school New York bagels, and the book's Holy GrailPeter's version of the famed pain ancienne. En route, Peter distills hard science, advanced techniques, and food history down into a remarkably accessible and engaging resource that is as rich and multitextured as the loaves you'll turn out. This is original food writing at it most captivating, teaching at its most inspired and inspiringand the rewards are some of the best breads under the sun.

concepts and recipes .......2007-10-11
The power of this book to help a reader make bread is twofold: first, a clear and interesting discussion of the ingredients and processes responsible for different types of flavor emerging in a baked loaf of bread, and second, a diverse collection of stellar recipes that produce great results. Bread is touchy, and Reinhart informs the reader more deeply than other cookbook authors, ensuring that you not only learn techniques but also learn why they are important.
Serious bread makers........2007-10-09
I have been been baking bread for 30 yrs. and this is by far the best of bread cook books in my collection. It answers all the questions I have ever had and more. I wish I had this book 25 yrs. ago and I would have never bought another. Happy baking.
The Bread Baker's Apprentice.......2007-10-07
I have read many books on making bread and this has to be one of the best.
The author's explanation of the twelve steps of bread, is the best way of explaining how bread is made. I think every bread maker should read and re-read this section to understand the causes of bad bread, to rectify or avoid them.
I would recommend this book to every baker.
Bread baking education.......2007-09-30
Call it Bread Baking 101. Reinhart's classroom like approach is indeed a reminder to school days and I resigned myself to the approach to fully understand (if that's at all possible) the fundamentals of bread. The science behind the process is dry, but necessary in understanding how the dough is transforming in each step.
Bottom line? I loved the book. I made my first batch of baguettes the other week and they came out fine. I frequently referred back to the early chapters checking my progress along the way. It's my second attempt at bread baking - I tried 20 years ago to disappointing results. The difference - certainly more practical experience at cooking in general, far better kitchen gadgets, but I'd say my new education from The Bread Baker's Apprentice is the biggest change!
Disappointed.......2007-09-02
This book is excellently made, beautiful images, very detailed instructions, exact formulas (or not?).
I bake my bread because I want perfect bread, and after following Mr Reinhard guidelines my breads are still a long, long way from the breads pictured in the book, breads come out correctly but don't even get near the breads pictured despited the huge efforts I've been doing. I follow some of the formulas and I see in the picture how they hold a beatiful dough while my dough slips between my fingers, his doughs raise beautifully while mine get thick and dense (tasty anyway).
I don't understand how I'm the only one to rate so low this book but I assure you that before reading the book using fresh yeast and tweaking the recipies more or less by intuition I got better results. The use of this book, up to the moment has been very frustating to me.
Despite the extensively detailed explanations I guess Mr Reinhard keeps a lot of secrets for himself.

Great book, worth the money.......2007-02-17
I recently discovered that my various symptoms were not in my head, but were in fact due to dairy allergy. Since giving up dairy, I no longer have aching joints, upset stomach, fatigue, hives, and a skin condition (since giving up dairy, the skin condition is almost completely gone). This book is the best book I've seen so far. The recipes are simple and tasty. If you're a true cheese lover like I am, I don't believe you're going to find anything that replaces the taste of cheese. So, if you're looking for something that tastes EXACTLY like dairy but isn't -- forget it. However, if you're willing to try something different so you can have better health, then this book is great. It's also a good source of information on dairy intolerance and allergy.
not too bad for a 2% lover.......2006-11-10
I have had 4 or 5 recipes so far.And all have been great. Just had the honey lime chicken. EXCELLENT!!!! *Double up on the sauce recipe if you are a sauce lover.
Try this cookbook FIRST if you are allergic to Milk!!!.......2006-01-16
I work full time, I have 2 kids, I don't have time to make all sorts of substitutes and marinate stuff for hours. This is simple, easy to follow book with results that are really tastey. INCLUDING DESSERTS!!! The whole family ate these reciepes no questions asked! They didn't even know that they were eating dairy free until I told them a week later. I have yet to have one reciepe flop!!
Some of the manufactures of subst items she lists are A LITTLE outdated, but we all know to check labels and I still found her tips very useful. I had been adjusting to not eating at all when in doubt, with this book I am starting to explore more in milk free cooking because I have less doubts.
As for "Cooking Without Milk: Milk-Free and Lactose-Free Recipes" Light a match and just burn your cash..not worth the paper it's on. I mean...Do you really need a recipe for a peanut and butter sandwich?
Good for those allergic to milk and soy.......2005-08-01
My son is allergic to both dairy and soy. about 1/5th of all those with milk allergies are also allergic to soy. This book provides many recipes that do not rely heavily on milk substitutes and thus are a Godsend to thus of us who can't just add soy to make it work.
excellent!.......2005-07-03
I bought this book (though not on Amazon) and I am very happy with it. I recently became very lactose intolerant and this was just the book I needed. One good thing about this book is that, unlike many other "milk-free" cookbooks, it doesn't just substitute soy milk for milk products. To me, the most important recipes are those for pancakes, french toast, muffins, biscuits, and many dessert recipes that usually use milk. I would recommend this book!

A unique blend of basic biomechanics and practical physical therapeutic techniques that relieve pain and improve performance in the horse.
Customer Reviews:
too acedemic.......2007-07-11
I was disappointed with this book because it is too acedemic. It covers a lot of theory but is not very practical with only a few diagrams. While a professional massage or physical therapist would enjoy reading it, a horse owner wanting easy to read instructions with diagrams, would be disappointed. I would borrow it from a library, but it is not worth buying.
A little more technical than I had planned for.......2006-08-07
This book is extremely detailed in anatomy. Although I like it, it's a little more detailed and technical than I had in mind for massage and stretching. It's almost like a mini text book. I found it a little on the heavy side for reading. I think this book is only for the most serious of students. It is chock full of technical descriptions, diagrams and some good black and white photos. I found myself skipping around trying to find something I might want to try on my horse but this book really isn't good for that. It really is more of a manual for the student of equine massage and physical therapy.
Slow going at first..........2006-01-27
Technical jargon galore in the first few chapters but after that the rest is easier for us non-vets to understand.
Simple and Easy to Understand.......2000-04-16
This book on equine massage therapy was very clear and easy to understand. It pinpointed specific places to do specific exercises, and gave clear pictures of the anatomy you were dealing with. How to do the exercises, and how to improve your work with the horse in general, was very well explained, and made sense for someone who is not an expert.
Book Description
As much as a decorator may admire antique furnishings, filling the home with well-worn originals entails many drawbacks: ferreting out, assessing, and restoring the original articles take time and effort, all for something that may, in the end, be inoperable -- not to mention, of course, that high-quality antiques can be quite expensive. So here is a sensible alternative in the manner of the most ingenious of Martha Stewart's tricks: transforming ordinary new (or nearly new) objects into beautiful period-style objets. Organized by the amount of time each project requires -- from one-hour wonders to weekend makeovers -- these creative transformations include candlesticks, jewelry boxes, lamps, planters, urns, cushions, chairs, chests, and washstands.
The styles represented also run the gamut from the medieval to Victorian side chairs, French Provincial to Edwardian and Regency. Also included with the amply illustrated instructions for each piece are at-a-glance, easy-to-follow primers on the preparation of wood, decorative and antique finishes, basic equipment, safety precautions, and even a directory of suppliers.

Beautiful!.......2000-06-18
The artwork in this book is absolutely beautiful. Although not a very long book, the layout shows true artistic taste. There is a detailed drawing of each facade that opens up to show the building's interior. These drawings are complimented with photographs of the buildings and their contents. The book focuses on St. Peter's, Buckingham Palace, the Paris Opera, Neuschwanstein (castle), and Monticello. I particularly enjoyed the sections on the Opera and on Monticello. There were so many interesting little facts!

Book Description
Empowerment of a Race, by Jesse J. Lewis and John Hayman, confronts what remains to be done to assure the empowerment of African Americans. Citing the new millennium as "a time for new beginnings and new hope," Lewis and Hayman issue a call for the rebuilding of black institutions in the United States. In the process, the authors discuss the failures of the Civil Rights Movement, the dangers of victim mentality, and the steps needed to fully realize hope.

The timing for this book is perfect. It is well-researched!.......1999-03-20
If there has ever been a wake up call, this book is the alarm clock. We (black) have got to start taking responsibility for ourselves and our children. We are all parents. There is an old African saying, "It takes a whole village to raise one child." If we want to be called African-Americans, let's get to the real grit of the matter and not just wear the print as a symbol. Dr. Lewis made it when it was easier not to make it and blame others for our lack of achievement! That soup won't mix today. Let us help our children make it by taking a stand. Don't know how to begin? Buy this book; help the cause and it will in return help you to get the back bone to help our children. I am undelining different passages for my grandchildren so they will know what the future is going to be like by studying the past. Haven't you heard, history repeats itself. Experience is the best teacher. Wisdom says let's learn from the experience of others.

Educational, inspirational, while telling it like it is!.......1999-03-18
Empowerment of a Race doesn't just tell what is wrong, but what can be done to correct the error. It states: "For all people, education is the key to survival and to prosperity. The extended family needs to understand that as a race of people who are attempting to achieve political, economic, and social empowerment for the yet unborn black Americans, they cannot afford to accept handouts or welfare. They must understand that no one is going to do any more for the black community than the black community is willing to do for itself." The book maintains, "When foreigners come to our country with a language barrier and overcome this obstacle and set every type of academic record, the question is why can't we black Americans? We cannot because we are not committed. If we were, we would limit television viewing to two hours a day and restrict it largely to educational news." I enjoyed the book! It is not only filled with historical facts--and not in a boring way--but it tells what can and should be done to move forward. Everyone may not agree with some of his strong statements, but I got the feeling he cares so much about his people...the black race, he wants to shake us and say..."Hey! Wake up. You have time to do something to make the world an even greater place for our children's children. But you have to get up and do something." Dr. Lewis is donating ALL proceeds from this book to the NAACP, SCLC, UNCF, and the URBAN LEAGUE. He's not just talking the talk, but he's walking the talk of which he writes about! Bravo!!!
