Book Description

Welcome to the critically acclaimed HBO drama series The Wire, hailed as "the best show on television, period" by the San Francisco Chronicle. The New York Times calls it "a vital part of the television landscape...unvarnished realism." Time declares that The Wire, "like its underfunded, workaday cops, just plugged away until it outshone everything else on TV."

The Wire stands not only as riveting drama but also as a sociopolitical treatise with ambitions beyond any television serial. The failure of the drug war, the betrayal of the working class, the bureaucratization of the culture and the cost to individual dignity -- such are the themes of the drama's first two seasons. And with every new episode of season three and beyond, another layer of modern urban life will be revealed. Gritty, densely layered, and realistic, The Wire is series television at its very best, told from the point of view of the Baltimore police, their targets, and many of those caught in the middle.

Rafael Alvarez -- a reporter, essayist, and staff writer for the show -- brings the reader inside, detailing many of the real-life incidents and personalities that have inspired the show's storylines and characters, providing the reader with insights into the city of Baltimore -- itself an undeniable character in the series. Packed with photographs and featuring an introduction by series creator and executive producer David Simon, as well as essays by acclaimed authors George Pelecanos, Laura Lippman, and Anthony Walton, here is an invaluable resource for both fans of the show and viewers who have yet to discover The Wire.

Hollywood has long used the cop drama to excite and entertain, and Hollywood has always dictated the terms. But The Wire is filmed entirely in Baltimore, conceived by Baltimoreans, and written by rust-belt journalists and novelists intimately familiar with the urban landscape. It's as close as television has yet come to allowing an American city to tell its own tale.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly episode summaries.......2006-07-09

I bought this hoping to get more background on crime in Baltimore, and was disappointed to find that it's 3/4ths episode summaries, and one self-absorbed intro by David Simon, and barely mentions the real stories that inspired the show. Unless you're a huge fan of the show, to the degere that you want to read the plots over again (and I liked the first season, then lost interest at the second, for what it's worth), there's not much to get into here.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty Sociology and Political Economy of Urban Crime.......2004-11-06

Anyone interested in seeing what a group of creative and compassionate writers bound by little network interference can do with a subject matter and a place caught in the throes of globalization, deindustrialization, and mounting despair and hopelessness for a large segment of the population need go no further than this book. More penetrating and revealing than dry scholarly tomes on these subjects, the writers of this book divulge the often painful tensions of producing, writing, and filming "The Wire," arguably the best dramatic series on television. Precisely because it grows out of the knowledge and life experiences of the producers, writers, and actors who have lived in this city, the series has a ring of authenticity and pathos that past commercial crime series for the most part lacked. Building upon the critical acclaim of "Homicide," the producers and writers led by David Simon and the late Bob Colesberry take "The Wire" to a new level of quality, realism, and art. The discerning watcher is rewarded with complex character sketches, twisting and demanding plots, and stunning filming that almost literally keep the viewer glued to the screen. In addition, the series puts a spotlight on both the irrationalities of the contemporary drug war and the humanity and moral complexity of even the most hardened criminal or drug kingpin. Humor, tragedy, callousness, and irony. Love, sex, drugs, and rock'n roll. Compassion, despair, hope, and avarice. All these ingredients combine into an extended annual series that peels open a layer of the city of Baltimore through stories that tell us much of the hellish possibilities and tender and healing moments of urban America slouching into the first decade of the new Millennium. This is a book with chapters by many of the series' principal contributors. It is a work that deepens one's appreciation for the series' creativity and genius, as well as its profound tragic sense of life and unrelieved tensions. Covering the first two seasons of the program, the book enhances the true fan's knowledge of the series with delightful vignettes, juicy tidbits and nuggets, and honest portraits of the characters who populate the series and the actors who inhabit those characters. Once started, the avid viewer will not be able to put it down. Guaranteed!

    5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Read.......2007-03-16

This book was an excellent read. I could barely put it down, it was the same with the first book too. She has created a very consistent and entertaing world. I can't wait for the next book.

5 out of 5 stars The saga continues.......2006-09-23

Whatever flaws TBV had, are not found in Shadowed by Wings, its much more polished, much less graphic in its portrayal of violence (so if thats what you're looking for, you will be disappointed!!), the flow of the action/adventure more well-paced, and the story unfolds with some answers, particularly concerning the politics of Malacar. From SFRevu, Review of 'Touched by Venom' by Gayle Surrette:"Zarq .. doesn't observe or ask questions about what goes on around her. As the clan and her family are torn apart she simply watches with all the innocence of a young child. For most of this book, Zarq steps back from taking responsibility for her own life and lets passion, revenge, and anger rule her choices......I found myself ...to really want to sit Zarq down and let her have it, with her aloofness and stubbornness."

I agree with this portrayal of Zarq the whiny child in TBV - but that child has grown and mostly gone by the end of 'Shadowed by Wings', Zarq at 17/18 is a much wiser, mature young woman, her character far more fully developed than in TBV, as we witness the birth of a political revolutionary leader, where the Personal is indeed the Political. A much more satisfying ending than TBV too.... the final installment can't be published quick enough for me!

4 out of 5 stars violent XXX fantasy saga .......2006-08-02

Seventeen years old Zarq believes it is her destiny as the Skykeeper's Daughter to become a dragonmaster. However, the Keepers of the Dragon Temple reject her request; insisting no woman has ever been or shall be a dragonmaster. She is warned to drop her pursuit or face dire consequences though she endures an abusive apprenticeship including rape and mutilation by the Dragonmaster of Clutch Re headed by Overlord Waikar Re Kratt.

While her peers treat her with contempt, Zarq searches for allegedly lost ancient documents that will prove a woman could be a Dragonmaster. If she succeeds in finding the document she would still face certain death of heresy or worse cold turkey withdrawal from dragon venom that's she is addicted to while they lock her away. Adding to her pressure is her late mother's dragon demands she search for her missing sister, Waivia, instead of completing an apprenticeship that will at the end still not achieve her dream of becoming one with the dragons.

This is not for everyone as Janine Cross is vividly descriptive with the trials and tribulations that assault the young heroine as she bucks the enforced order of the Taliban like Dragon Temple. Definitely not for a weak stomach with scenes of rape, genital and other bodily mutilations, and sexual slavery that make Zarq's dragon venom addiction, forced prostitution and even bestiality, seem mild. Well written, SHADOWED FOR WINGS is a violent XXX fantasy saga that provides a radically different look at a dragon based society than the heroic thread eaters of Pern.

This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr

    Book Description

Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

This book is a great resource for those who wonder if they may have some issues with ADD and ADHD (actually the same diagnosis) I originally bought this book to figure myself out (and subsequently saw clues to my mother's behavior all these years). WHen my youngest was diagnosed with ADHD, I re-read it to get the perspective of a child's struggle with ADD. Essential reading.

5 out of 5 stars Do you question what ADD is and whether you or someone you love has ADD?.......2007-08-20

This book can change your life. If you read this book, and you see your life history/story, maybe you should find out a little more about ADD and yourself. Or if you read this book and you see your husband, wife or child, this can be a first step in answering many questions.

5 out of 5 stars The classic for ADD information.......2007-08-18

I love this book, and have bought several copies over the years for newly diagnosed friends, etc. It is concise, clear and not overly stuffy. It doesn't throw a pity party like some books about disabilities do, and offers a diagnostic criteria, as well as coping skills, medical links, and resources listed in the back. A must read if you or anyone you love has ADD, or ADHD.

    5 out of 5 stars The BEST........2007-06-20

The absolute best book out there for an introduction to ADD. The structure of the book is perfectly managable for an ADDer without being condescendingly superficial or taking on a tone of talking to children, like some of these books do. I'd also recommend it to anyone who has friends or family who either doubt the existence of or (just don't know much about) ADD.
Check out Hallowell's "Delivered" for more coping mechanisms, and info on treatment, therapy and medication.

    5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2007-06-17

If you wish to become more informed on the topic of ADD and ADHD,then this book is a "must read". The format is easy to read and understand. The reader can identify with one or more of the many examples and scenarios outlined in the book. I found it to be extremely helpful in understanding what ADD is really all about and what it feels like for my daughter to live with ADD.
In addition, I now recognize symptoms of adult ADD as well.

The Elephant Walk Cookbook, the first volume of traditional Cambodian cooking published in the U.S., is a cultural as well as a culinary adventure. It's also the story of author Longteine De Monteiro and how she and her husband were forced into exile in 1975 by the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia and eventually came to own three restaurants and a market in and around Boston. An important reason she wrote this book--with Katherine Neustadt--was to preserve traditional dishes that now may no longer be served in Cambodia because everyone who knew how to make them was exterminated by the Khmer Rouge, or fled elsewhere.

Cambodian cooking blends influences from Asia and the West, including China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Spain, and France. It is a balancing act of colors, textures, and most of all, salty, sour, sweet, hot, and bitter flavors. Rice and fish are important, particularly freshwater-lake fish and a fermented fish paste, prahok. So are coconut milk, lemongrass, and a list of other ingredients that are becoming more readily available outside of Southwest Asia. Still, ordering by mail from sources provided in the book--or a special shopping trip--will be necessary to make most of the dishes in The Elephant Walk Cookbook.

The most accessible dishes are the salads (many of which contain chicken or pork), including Tomato Salad and Pineapple Salad, and the pickles, such as Mixed Vegetable Pickles. Loc Lac--beef marinated in mushroom soy sauce, sautéed, and served on crisp lettuce with lime juice--is another easy choice. Loving, lively descriptions and alluring photos will keep you reading about all of the 150 dishes, which are aromatic with basil and cilantro, galangal, kaffir lime and curry leaves, tamarind, fiery chiles, garlic, pungent fish sauce, and the like. --Dana Jacobi

        Book Description

Written by the chef-owner of Boston's renowned The Elephant Walk, which has been praised for its unique cuisine by such publications as Esquire, the New York Times, USA Today, and Travel & Leisure, The Elephant Walk Cookbook is a fascinating introduction to the lively and sophisticated flavors of Cambodia. In addition to showcasing Cambodia's foods, this cookbook tells the inspiring story of Longteine De Monteiro. The wife of a diplomat who was forced into exile after Pol Pot invaded Cambodia, De Monteiro escaped to France, where she established what may have been the first Cambodian restaurant in the Western world. She then moved to the United States and opened The Elephant Walk. Less salty than Vietnamese food, less sweet than Thai, and subtler than both, Cambodian dishes feature a rich interweaving of cultural influences and fresh, light flavors. Some of the recipes in the book, like Catfish with Coconut Milk and Red Chilies, were created in the kitchens of Cambodian aristocrats, while others, like Stuffed Cabbage with Lemongrass, have simpler origins.

3 out of 5 stars it was okay. .......2006-06-30

Well i just bought the book a week ago, i've used 2 recipes..and they're rather bland, i always need to add more stuff to the food, for instance to make the stir fry beef with tomatos, it said to use 3 tablespoons of fish sauce and 1 tablespoon of soysauce..if you look at it, you notice how wrong that would taste..it would be veeeeery salty..so i had to use the regular recipe i learned from my mother.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in every way.......2005-12-13

If you love exotic cuisine and preparing it at home, then I would suggest that this book should be on the top of your list.

Just for starters, Cambodian cuisine is probably the tastiest of the SE Asian cuisines that I have tried. And what's more, the recipies are usually quite simple to prepare. I was surprised that some barely required anything beyond my neighborhood grocery store. Even for a back woods person like myself, getting some of the exotic ingredients required only a few stops on the web, and I was ready to cook anything from this book.

The cookbook is expertly laid out. It begins with a lengthy introduction, including everything from information on the history of Cambodia to the art of shopping in an Asian grocery store. The recipies are arranged in a pretty logical fashion: appetizers, meat type, noodles, and deserts. The last section covers the basic ingredients of Cambodian cooking which may be new to the western eyes. For someone coming from a small town, I had never used a lot of these ingredients. Even more handy about this book is the fact that there are many coloured pictures of the dishes and the exotic ingredients. If you've never shopped at an Asian grocery store, it's very useful to know what the product looks like, and Longteine de Monteiro also tells what exactly to look for when purchasing said items. Of course, the pictures really help so you know what type of result you want.

I'm really impressed by the amount of work that Longteine put into this book. Not only are the recipies great and it's loaded with information, it looks good too! The research was a bit exhaustive and the commentaries on each dish gave me some background or at least, entertainment.

Weaknesses of the book? Well, sorry to say, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head without really asking for too much (pictures of EVERY dish, for example). All around, this is a great cookbook, if not my favourite from my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Even a white guy can cook like a Cambodian with this........2004-12-06

Even a white guy can cook like a Cambodian with this.

The books very well laid out, easy to follow and could even be a coffee table book. It has a good cross reference to explanations of ingredients that even allow a Texan like myself to impress my Cambodian wife by cooking some dishes as well as her mother. It's a lot of fun trying anyway.

The people who wrote it are real nice. I couldn't find Prahok here in Miami, so I emailed them and they sold me a couple of jars from their store and took the time to ship it to me (at cost).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book! Buying one for my sisters!.......2004-07-27

I was very excited to recieve this book in the mail. I tried a few recipes and love them! I, like others have never been able to mimick my mothers Khmer dishes and my mother wasn't able to teach me well enough. I go by measurements and my mother goes by taste and experience. So this book made it easier for me to learn how to prepare Khmer meals for my growing family. I wanted to be able to serve my children meals that I grew up loving and this book helps me in every way. True it is a bit "Americanized" but it is better than what I haven't seen published out there. This is a must have for anyone who wants to learn how to cook these delicious dishes. I plan on purchasing a copy for my two sisters, who as well have been struggling to learn how to prepare our mothers meals.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - very complete.......2002-09-25

As my girlfriend is from Cambodia, I have looked for a source to learn to prepare some of the dishes her mother also makes, and I've managed to surprise her a couple of times with the mostly very authentic recipes that are in this book (not ALL dishes are perhaps uniquely or typically Khmer, but that does not change the merits of the book! (cfr. the other reader reviews)). The book is very complete, and a pleasure not only to use for cooking but also simply to browse and admire the pictures. For those who wish some extra sources of "authentic" khmer cuisine, I can recommend that they look for the book by Nusara Thaitawat (The Cuisine of Cambodia - I don't think it's on Amazon, but can be found on the internet) - they will find a great second book that also lists a large number of marvellous recipes, with equally exquisite pictures, but does presuppose some more familiarity with the ingredients and measures - which can be acquired by reading and using "The Elephant Walk" first.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and instructive guide to quality time with your dog!.......2005-01-24

I gave this book to my friend, who adores her dog, and is in dog shows and competitions (Golden Retrievers)
        She loves it.
She said it was fun to read, and she really is enjoying Maryjean Ballners techniques. They are well explained and easy to follow, with photos, showing the actual massages. I gave Maryjeans other book "Cat Massage" to another friend of mine, and he said all his neighbors are passing it around, and he hasn't even got a chance to read it yet!
So for me, these books make a great gift for my pet loving friends.

1 out of 5 stars Insipid and repetitive.......2002-09-13

The first 56 pages are repetitive lists of kitschy phrases like "no-mo" and "fast n'frisky," plus endless warnings to stop if your dog isn't interested or doesn't like it (especially fur ruffling!). Well, duh. It's really written for someone who doesn't know their canine "companion" very well at all (oh the irony), and it's completely goofy. Linda Tellington-Jones writes much better animal therapy books.

        Book Description

When science and post-war lighting designers married, the modern housewife of the '50s suddenly had an incredible array of weird and wild fixtures to choose from. New materials and production techniques developed during World War II, and a new attitude following it, collided to create the lamps we hate to love. But love them you will! Revisit lamp patterns like amoeba, starburst, atomic, and, of course, the indomitable lava lamps. Page through great figural TV lamps and a generous sampling of floor lamps and table lamps of all shapes and sizes in brass, plaster, Lucite, and ceramics. Each lamp is illustrated in full color with a current market value to aid collectors.

3 out of 5 stars I AGREE WITH TUCSON, AZ.......2003-12-23

I AGREE WITH TUCSON, AZ IN THAT THIS IS A NEAT LITTLE REFERENCE BOOK IF YOU LIKE COLLECTING GREAT FUNKY, VINTAGE LAMPS. IT WAS THE FIRST LAMP BOOK I COULD FIND WHEN I STARTED COLLECTING AND THOUGH THE BOOK VALUE PRICES ARE VERY LOW FOR TODAY'S CURRENT MARKET, I WAS ABLE TO GET A "ROUGH" ESTIMATE ON WHAT MINE WERE WORTH. A LITTLE HISTORY BEHIND EACH LAMP WOULD BE NICE, AND THIS BOOK COULD USE A PRICE UPDATING AND SOME CLEARER PICTURES, BUT OVERALL, IF YOU CAN FIND A USED COPY CHEAP, IT IS WORTH HAVING.

3 out of 5 stars Out of date but good for first lamp book!.......2002-01-08

This was released in 1997, before Ebay and the lamp craze of the 50's and 60's hit its resurgance. It was the very first lamp book I purchased, and the only one with 'funky' lamps that I could find at the time. I found it to be very enjoyable, and a great reference to help me start my vintage lamp - collecting hobby. Though the pictures are a little blurry, and the prices very low, keep in mind that the market is constantly going up, and some are VERY collectible now, bringing in top dollars. If you can find a nice used copy of this book, buy it!

1 out of 5 stars dont be duped by the cover photo!!.......1999-05-10

what a jip. the cover shot has these cool looking lamps and all but once you open the rest of the book it turns out to be a blurry mess. does this publishing company have a computer? Hello is anybody in there? some of the worst lamps i have ever seen are represented in this book.mrs lindenberger should at least do some research on the prices these lamps regularly sell for. perhaps by checking on eBAY. come to think of it between Ms. Lindenberger and schiffer publishing they have put out more trash price guides than singer made sewing machines.Dont Judge a book by it's cover is definately appropriate in this case.

        3 out of 5 stars far-out, funky lamps!.......1999-03-27

although some of the pictures are not the best, I personaly enjoyed looking at all the quirky lamps. (there are some really outa-this-world looking lamps in this book.) If you want to see some really over the top lamps, check out this book.

1 out of 5 stars As with all Lindenberger"s "works" - Absolutely Dreadful!.......1999-02-07

This is typical of the work (or lack thereof) of Jan Lindenberger. Lousy pics, little or no product or maker information and completely off base pricing "guide". Don't waste your money on ANY of this "authors" titles if you want accurate information. Shame on you, Ms. Lindenberger and Schiffer Publishing for cranking out this low caliber garbage.

                  4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written.......2004-05-26

I never would have imagined the plight of the imigrant woman had it not been for this book.Nina's story, among other women were compelling.
I would strongly recommend this book it is not only informative, but also emotionally engaging, and gives a good discription on the issues immigrant women face with here in the United States, mainly discrimination.

4 out of 5 stars Heart-touching first generation immigrant women.......2004-03-26

This book tought me the strenght of each of the women that immigrated to the United States for a better future. It is interesting to learn that these women had a new start, which meant that they would have to adapt to this new country facing many obstacles. One is given the personal experiences from women around the world.

5 out of 5 stars When do we know we're American?.......2001-10-11

At first I was a bit put off by how everywoman sounded as if she were whining at the loss of something she'd never had, as if her coming to America was by default(most had arrived as children), rather than a delirious desire, as it had been for me in my 20s. Still, I read on, fascinated by each woman's unique story - until I hit the motherlode in their essays where they began to spin their broken straws into the golden fiber of their new lives.

Curious & remarkable what women from the East & from Africa thought important & what women from the Old World thought vital to their welfare. Some women ached in exactly the same way I had - wanting so much to be the daughter of which our mothers would have been proud.

Do not look for patriotism in these pages - that sort of thing doesn't matter to women nearly as much as which identity we will be expected to wear in which place in our lives: our families' homes & churches; our schools & our parents' relatives from the Old Country.

Becoming American is an absorbing, serious tea party where 24 women who started in every corner of the world have come to adulthood in America &, under Meri Nana-Ama Danquah's able editorship, have shared their stories.

What of our past must we relinquish & what of America need we assimilate?

Well worth the read! Made me do a lot of thinking, & writing too!

4 out of 5 stars An Insightful View of Immigrant Experience.......2000-08-04

This book is a wonderful insight into the lives of first-generation immigrants. Being a first-generation immigrant myself, I found myself identifying with a lot of emotions and confusions of adjusting to the American beat. Because most of my immigrant friends come from the same culture as me, it was interesting to see how my experience differs from immigrants from other countries.

The range of countries represented is diverse, although there is a definite emphasis on Latino experience and several essays by Irish immigrants. The fact that the authors of the essays are all writers of various success does not make for a very representative sample, however, although that was probably not the book's intent. The writing is a bit uneven and in some essays quite forced. I guess it's hard to write about one's personal experiences and emotions without sounding cheesy, and few of the writers in this anthology overcome this problem. But this is of course the matter of personal taste.

All in all, the book makes for a pleasant and interesting read, although after reading this book, I will also look for a book that captures a more diverse experience, perhaps written in form of profiles rather than personal essays, a style I found less probing than profiles written by an outsider.
