Book Description
Millicent van der Hoeven has decided to sell her family's Adirondack estate to a nature conservancy. But on the day of the land transfer, her brother frantically calls the police. Millie has disappeared in the cold November forest...Reverend Clare Fergusson gets an early morning phone call to join the Millers Kill search and rescue operation. As a former Army helicopter pilot trained in survival skills, she can't refuse the request-even though it's the day of the bishop's annual visit. Worse for Clare, the search operation will link her up with Russ Van Alstyne, the very married local police chief who is her greatest temptation. Now, as Clare and Russ race time to find Millie van der Hoeven, they soon discover the secrets of someone who is desperate to stop the sale....and a deadly madness waiting to destroy them all.

Just couldn't finish this book...........2007-10-08
Seldom am I unable to finish a book, but I just could not plow through this one. Granted, I have never read another book in this Clare & Russ series before, however, I sure didn't get to read much of Clare & Russ in this one. Very few sections in their point of view.
Pages and pages of reminiscing by all the characters made for a pace that simply crawled. (Perhaps "Misty Memories" would be a better title.)
Also, most of the characters spoke with the same "voice" so that it was very difficult to distinguish one character from another. The only one who did have a slightly different "voice" spoke in an annoying accent that came and went for no reason.
Another annoying thing: smart characters (or at least characters who should know better) who do stupid things.
And finally, as reader, I do not need to know every little detail of every characters' thoughts & deeds--only those details that add to plot, characterization or setting. Slow pace, bland characters, wasted details...I just had to put it down.
Riveting and Informative.......2007-05-30
Ms. Spencer-Fleming's fourth Fergusson/Van Alstyne novel goes at the same fast pace as the previous three - Russ and Clare don't spend as much time together as before, but it works. There is a lot happening behind the scenes. i.e. the reader sees a lot of the inner workings of the minds of the criminals. The author is selective with this technique - otherwise the identity of the most destructive criminal would be revealed too early.
As with all of JSF's mysteries, the suspense builds to an exciting climax. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment.
Not the best of the series, but a good bridge.......2006-10-07
Rev. Clare Fergusson is called out to help search for a missing woman, whose family land is about to be sold that evening for a resort. Some would call that avoidance--and they'd be right. Clare's bishop is coming for a visit the next day. Just before that, the bishop's deacon and 'fixer' arrives to discuss some problems the arch diocese is having with Clare.
As the search progresses, Clare is thrown more and more into the company of the town's very married police chief, Russ Van Alstyne. The pair's relationship is already causing some talk, but the two are doing their best to keep everything above-board despite their feelings for each other.
Meanwhile, several subplots are evolving as a newly unemployed logger angrily assaults a lumber mill owner's daughter and his wife tries to cover it up. Also, a mill owner discovers someone who might just change his fate--if he plays his cards right...
The book is very intense, but I didn't find it as compelling as the others in this series. It is still a very worthwhile read and is definitely needed before "All Mortal Flesh."
Exquisite Tension Throughout.......2006-09-06
Julia Spencer-Fleming treads a fine line between professional respect and deep passion in her wonderful series featuring Russ Van Alstyne and Clare Fergusson. Like all really accompished series writers, she keeps her readers initimately involved in the struggles of her characters while continuing to create plausible circumstances for an Episcopal priest and small town police chief to be working to solve crimes together. This series has a brilliant take on sense of place, almost as if it were a third character. Well worth recommending.
An enjoyable sequel.......2006-08-24
I was pleasantly surprised by the first novel in this series and figured I had found another interesting author to add to my collection.
Each new book has added to my original assessment and I've liked both the writing style and character development. The plots are usually intricate but not convoluted and nicely tied together in the end.
Although this latest book was not one of my favorites, it still kept my interest until the final page and there were a couple of new characters I'd like to see come back in additional stories (and one I would have liked to see again, but obviously cannot).
Overall, I would highly recommend Julia Spencer-Fleming to mystery buffs.

the highest summit of art.......2006-12-16
It shouldn't even be necessary to point out that Eric Eddison's books are the high point of twentieth century literature.
It should go without saying that he is the best prose artist in the history of the English-language novel; his writing, and his dialogue in particular, are at least fifteen percent better than whichever lesser genius comes in second (Lord Dunsany, perhaps?).
In a saner world, every college freshman would be expected to read his books, and to at least pretend to understand that the themes Eddison presents within them - the cycles of time, the duality of the godhead, human life lived as a work of conscious art - are the closest approach to Truth that are possible in fiction. (And they are only expressible in fantastic fiction, for we must come at these things indirectly and through the side door of Myth.)
The reason that Eddison is obscure and his infinite virtues remain almost unsung is, of course, because ours is a civilization, and indeed a world, so unrepentantly degenerate that it isn't capable of understanding his works. A typical professor presented with The Worm or Mistress of Mistresses is in the position of an ape given a laptop computer: the best he can do is to bang his head against it. For what Eddison brings us is truth, at both the spiritual and mundane levels, and truth is more than the little men of this world can bear.
You, dear reader, are probably already a cut above, to even have taken time to find out that Eddison exists and to bother to read a review of his books. (And be assured that this door is shut to the modestly endowed, as a survey of reviews on the web will reveal. Books on the level of Eddison, particulary the Zimiamvia trilogy, cannot be written with the masses in mind. This is the very definition of elite literature.)
If you haven't read any of these works, you now have a great opportunity to evolve further away from the "common muck", as Eddison might call them, and perhaps later on, even agree with the tone and substance of this review. Or, you can do what the common muck will do: instead of attempting to rise to Eddison's level, resent the fact that he is simply smarter, better and more enlightened than you, or any other novelist you've ever come across. And most of all, of course, resent that he doesn't care if you know it.
The chance, and the choice, are yours.
If this is fantasy I prefer reality.......2006-01-06
It's really hard to express how bad this book is. And to think that on his cover I read a praise from "the master" himself (ie Tolkien). I wonder what they put in his pipe that day! This story is a repulsive conglomerate of wanna-be fantasy scenarios, victorian fashions, latin and greek reminiscences. The characters are stereotypical (beautiful, strong, etc.) and seem to be all taken from some idiotic "high society" club. You get no impression of a living, warm, pulsating, lively world, but just of a few snobs wasting their time and yours. And how logically irritating can be to have characters citing latin and greek verses of our world? The prose tries desperately to sound ornate and elegant but is just convoluted and cold.
Mature British Fantasy that Predates The Hobbit.......2002-06-01
The Zimiamvian trilogy is a philosophy beautifully realized through Eddison's deftly extruding a world based on Beauty, his "fundamental value" of the universe (but how it's accomplished you'll just have to read for yourself). The fact that he starts with a philosophy means that his mindset throughout Zimiamvia is consistent and allows him to progress confidently through plot, prose, and poetry.
He describes environments with sumptuous imagery, but the best of his writing is in how he conveys that which is left unsaid: in the wonderful, bantering conversations, in the way Fiorinda conveys so much in the simple tilt of her head. Indeed, transitory beauty found in the fleeting moment was one of Eddison's obsessions, and important to the books. Simple gestures create changes in mood and atmosphere and it's fascinating to see Eddison impart these sweeping temporal phantasms again and again.
My only criticism is that Eddison's Victorian sentiments towards the roles of men and women can be quaint. But he obviously loved these characters and his commitment to them and to the philosophy behind Zimiamvia makes them utterly convincing, and such anachronisms are easily forgiven. After all, he fully admitted that his idea of utopia might not be everyone's.
This edition of the Zimiamvian books (Mistress of Mistresses - published in 1935, A Fish Dinner in Memison, and The Mezentian Gate all in one volume) also has the benefit of an introduction and wonderful footnotes by Paul Edmund Thomas which helped me since I'm uninitiated in the scholarship of Scandinavian and Viking sagas and a little rusty on some of the classics, to which Eddison makes copious references. I don't know if the individual books have the benefit of such notes, but I would recommend seeking out a copy with them if you're not intimately familiar with those subjects (also with Renaissance Italian political intrigue, European art history, and, in one passage, cricket match terminology). But please don't let this deter you from reading these marvelous books. Thomas' notes are conversational and even funny sometimes, which makes them very accessible. As of the writing of this review, the book is out of print, but I easily found a cheap used copy online and I encourage you to find one, too.
This should not be out of print - head for the library.......2000-09-27
... and look for it, or the individual titles: Mistress of Mistresses, Fish Dinner in Memison, The Mezentian Gate. This is fantasy of the highest order, and unlike anything else you might read. The prose itself is unusually beautiful. Though not writing the same as any of them, I place him in my pantheon of writers with Gene Wolfe, Thomas Pynchon, Kazantzakis (more than a few similarities there), perhaps Sam Delany.I first got recommended his less subtle, but still great, book The Worm Ourobouros back in the late 60's as a follow-on to Tolkien. This is a much more grown-up vision.
Awesome, unique, larger than life - but demanding - fantasy........1998-10-23
Ornate and splendid, Eddison's trilogy is by far the most audacious and ambitious fantasy I've read. The third volume is sadly incomplete, Eddison (like Peake) having died before he could finish it; but fortunately he had written the final sections, and it is the middle that is fragmentary. Even the plot summaries which do exist show that some of the best scenes in fantasy were, tragically, never written! The books are set in the world of Zimiamvia, where superhuman noblemen and women love, die, fight and endure intricate political wrangling. What is unusual about the books is their underlying philosophy, whose gradual revelation and embellishment is the real purpose of all this plot-mongering. To say more would be to reduce the intellectual excitement of discovering it. This is not an easy, story-teller's yarn, but a demanding AND REWARDING project. Its very prose is rich, dense and ornate, appropriate to the grandeur and seriousness of the author's intent. This is high fantasy for grown-ups. I like a bit of escapism as much as the next person, but it is also good to see the genre (before it WAS a genre) being used to a much higher purpose.

Very Pleased.......2007-08-27
I Was very pleased with this item and would definately recommend it and the supplier as well as use the supplier again myself if the oppotunity presents itself.
Most Helpful for conceiving.......2007-08-06
I have picked up and read several books trying to get specific information about the fertilization process. Alot of books just have the same generalized, generic information that you would get in an average text book, but didn't clearly clarify whether it was best time to try before you ovulate or right after. This is the only book I found so far that really gave me down to earth and very practical information about the most effective timing for getting pregnant and why. I loved that it was both readable and scientifically detailed in its delivery of information. I wish I'd read this two months ago. Alot of pregnancy books including What To Expect When you Are Expecting and The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy didn't even touch on the specifics of trying to get pregnant. In fact the first chapter of the Mayo book just spends a lot of time scaring women over 35, like me, of how risky and statistically challenged our pregancies might be. These two books might be fine once you get pregnant, but they weren't helpful for getting pregnant.
This book in my opinion bridges the gap between a general info baby book and an infertility book. In fact the book points out that a lot of couples who think they are infertile just don't know when to start trying and how to properly calculate their fertility window. My friend and I are trying to get pregnant and the same time, and when I read her the section on getting pregnant, she was like....this is fascinating. This book is great for people who want specific scientific information in a down to earth delivery.
The Mother of All Pregnancy Books.......2007-07-12
This is the second time I bought this book and everyone says it is so informative. Thank you. :)
A great tool for conception and fertility.......2007-06-27
In a sometimes frustrating struggle to conceive, this book was my bible and Ann Douglas my guru. I read and re-read the chapters on infertility and conception over and over - drifting to other books but always coming back to the "Mother". She doesn't get caught up in too much technical jargon, doesn't preach or offer judgment, and presents a very large amount of material in a straightforward, easy-to-read fashion. The charts are great, and although there is some scary info in here about miscarriages, ectopic, stilbirths, etc., it's important to include, and presented very well. I haven't found it quite as useful or comprehensive for late pregnancy and preparation for birth, but it's still a valuable part of my (large) stack of pregnancy books.
Good, but not the best.......2007-06-21
The conversational tone of the book was a little distracting, and I didn't care for the way it was organized, but I appreciated the positive attitude it portrayed.
There is some good information, but there are other books with more complete information and better organization. My favorites are "1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy" and "Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy & Baby's First Year". They are both extremely thorough, well-organized, and work great for reference. Both of these books tend to put things in perspective, maintain a positive tone and really present you with all the facts. In general, I think the pregnancy books written by doctors are the best.
Book Description
This book is a wonderful introduction to the wide world of Mexican cooking. Kippy Nigh presents vegetarian recipes that showcase the unique qualities of Mexican regional cooking. This authentic collection of Mexican dishes is presented with clear, easy-to-understand instructions for making popular favorites, as well as regional specialties.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful cookbook.......2007-06-26
Very nice indeed! If they added pictures, this one would move up to a 5. I love to read cookbooks, and "A Taste of Mexico" made me smile.
Little too fat for me........2007-02-03
I'm a vegetarian because I try to be careful about the food I eat. While there some useful recipes in the book. I found that many were just way to high on the fat-o-meter and I will probably not use the book too much.
The ONLY Mex/Veg Cookbook to Buy!!!.......2005-06-17
This cookbook is one of my alltime favorites, and I have A LOT of cookbooks. The recipes are simple yet delicious. The bits of history and folklore are delightful. The classics are here in top form, and are often presented with new and innovative twists in addition to traditional preparation. This is a must have for ANYBODY wanting to cook up some good Mexican food, not just vegetarians!
Excellent.......2003-09-07
All the favorites are in here - quesadillas, guacamole, wide variety of salads, enchiladas, moles, cillies rellenos, tamales etc. A number of dishes I'm not familiar with too which makes it fun. Recipes are all pretty straightforward and easy except for a few. Would have been nice to have some photographs but the text is good.
Vegetarian Spin on Classic Southern Mexican Cuisine.......2003-01-01
I bought this book in San Cristobal during a backpacking trip through Mexico a number of years ago. Thinking what an unusual and serendipitous find this was - authentic southern Mexican dishes retooled for the vegetarian - I was excited to get it home and sample some of the recipes.
I've been consistently impressed with the book and the dishes made from it since. Thankfully, Kippy Nigh provides a detailed listing of Mexican ingredients and techniques as primer for the non-Mexican cook, who has most likely never tasted let alone attempted to prepare authentic Mexican cuisine. In "A Taste of Mexico" you'll find recipes for typical market food such as quesadillas filled with unusual but delicious ingredients such as huitlacoche or fleur de calabasa (which I became addicted to while traveling), chilaquiles, chayotes, empanadas, and horchata, as well as more familiar favorites.
Much of the book focuses on recipes that don't traditionally call for meat such as vegetable soups, appetizers, salads, beans, and accompaniments. However, many main dishes are modified by replacing the meat with TVP, a soy product that does a reasonable job replicating the taste and texture of ground meat, as in the case of her enchilada, chile relleno and tostada recipes. When I've made these dishes for non-vegetarian friends they're always surprised that they don't contain meat.
This is definitely a book I recommend to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.
Book Description
Authentic sauces, delectable side dishes, zesty salsas, and many more selections that remain true to the culinary traditions of Mexico fill this vegan cookbook. A different perspective.......2007-08-24
I happen to quite like this book and the series as a whole. They are very much about giving people options and suggestions when venturing into a new way of cooking and a great help with easing the transition that many folks struggle with.
With regards to the previous review, I am not really sure how many cookbooks out there actually contain nutritional info. I would suggest it's advisable that anyone starting to eat a vegan diet, should have (and/or should seek) a basic sense of vegan nutrition.
And yes, many of the recipes contain nuts. But that is because nuts are one important source of minerals, vitamins, protein and fat when eating vegan. There are also a large number of recipes with wheat, which doesn't help folks out that are gluten intolerant. Yet it is a *vegan* cookbook. Not a 'nut-free' or 'gluten-free' cookbook.
Nor does it claim to contain authentic vegan recipes from Mexico. Mexican food is generally not vegan. (Neither is Italian, Thai...etc)But the series uses the influences and spices of the different countries, altering recipes in order to fit into a range of ingredients that don't contain animal products. It does what it says on the tin - it's a vegan cook book.
So I would recommend this book and the series as a whole, especially for people just starting out with vegan food or those simply wanting to learn how to fix tasty food without meat, eggs or diary.
Finally, as for the 'dessertspoons' etc. The books are published in the UK, by a British author. US cookbooks rarely translate cups, teaspoons and tablespoons into grams (which tends to be a more common way of communicating amounts of ingredients required for a recipe in the UK). It's a small cultural difference and not something that should hold folks off from ordering the books. Anyone with the ability to use a web browser should be able to handle a quick search on the internet in order to translate. :)
whole series terrible.......2004-11-10
I ordered four vegan cookbooks from this author (Italian, Mexican, Indian, Caribbean). I hate them all. First off, they are small and contain few recipes. Half the recipes they contain are for items I either wouldn't cook from scratch (tortilla's) or are so basic they are found in every other cookbook on my shelf (tomato sauce).
Next, the books are from the UK so you better know how much a dessertspoon is, what "hard vegan cheese" is, as well as know what an aubergine or courgette is. There is no glossary or nutritional information given in any of the books for any of the recipes.
But by far, the most irritating feature of this author and her books is her love of nuts. No matter what cuisine the book is suppose to be about, the recipes are filled with nuts....walnuts, filbernuts, hazelnuts, etc. It would be fair to say that at least 2/3'rds of the recipes in each book contain nuts. In the Italian book 7 of 8 recipes in one chapter contain nuts! I've eaten in many an Italian restaurant and not once have I ever had a dish with walnuts in it. This woman is nuts for nuts.
So, even at the low price, I cannot recommend these books to anyone, especially those with nut allergies.

The book explores the human-animal bond, healthy living and graceful aging, understanding diagnoses and options, managing needs and expectations, and more. Delivering much needed solace and guidance, it makes this uncharted territory more manageable for the many pet caretakers wanting to do the right thing for their loved ones.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on pet care.......2007-01-19
This is an excellent book for anyone who has animals. It is a very easy read. It is especially helpful to anyone who is coming to the end with a pet and will have to make the decision
Experiencing the book!.......2005-11-30
I had the wonderful, good fortune to experience all of the topics discussed in this book first hand! Dr. Nakaya was my veterinarian for many years, through several dogs, surgeries, hospitalizations, and their aging processes. She lives what she speaks, and only after I cried through the first reading of this book did I realize that not only did she treat my wonderful Emily Houdini, Templar and Gizmo, she treated me as well! Her holistic approach to animal care was new to me-I was no longer treated as an invoice waiting to be paid. She guided me through so many issues and taught me that by caring for my animals, I was also caring about and for myself. She helped me lovingly put my Templar to rest when all he wanted to do was muster what energy he had left to wag his tail for me. Everyone who loves animals should not only read this book, but keep it as a reminder of how our animal friends love us under all circumstances. It makes a wonderful gift to anyone who loves animals....a keeper!
A Must Have Guide Book For All Pet Owners.......2005-10-20
Finally a book on pet care giving that is not full of medical jargon. Dr. Nakaya has written a book that guides the pet owner through the decsions that are made on behalf of their pets. She guides you through the decision process on finding a vet all the way through the difficult choices that may have to be made towards the end of a pet's life. She writes in a language that is easy to understand and full of compassion. In reading this book, you realize that caring for a pet in your life is not just medical choices but emotional choices as well. This book is a MUST HAVE for all pet owners, no matter which species they share their everyday lives with.
A wonderful, unusual guide to the overall needs of a pet adds a dimension lacking in your usual 'pet owner manual.......2005-10-12
At first glance Kindred Spirit, Kindred Care: Making Health Decisions On Behalf Of Our Animal Companions might seem to be just a pet owner's manual - but in addressing the spiritual as well as the physical needs of animal, Dr. Nakaya goes much further, examining the nature of the human-animal bond itself and how to help animals both live and die gracefully. A wonderful, unusual guide to the overall needs of a pet adds a dimension lacking in your usual 'pet owner manual'.
An Informative Guide for Decision Making on Behalf of Our Animals.......2005-09-27
This book is a must have for anyone who shares their lives with animals. The text is informative without overwhelming the reader with complicated medical jargon. With knowledge and sensitivity, Dr. Nakaya has written a book which imparts great wisdom and insight regarding the decisions we as caregivers must make throughout the lives of our animal companions. She guides the reader through this decision making process by helping them clearly identify key issues they should consider. I found the chapter dealing with euthanasia to be extremely helpful. To summarize in three words, BUY THIS BOOK

Cape Juby, Heligoland, and more.......2004-06-14
As any stamp collector quickly finds out, there are a lot of countries that used to issue stamps that don't anymore. The history of postage stamps is linked to the history of the countries that issued them, which can make things very confusing without some background knowledge. As colonies changed hands, countries were occupied, and new nations came into being, new stamps were issued to carry the mail. It helps to have a good reference book to straighten things out.
"The Stamp Atlas" is such a book. It's an historical atlas, almanac and postal history reference all rolled into one. For each country, there are historical maps, brief write-ups concerning the political and postal history of the area (including the pre-stamp era), and illustrations of its stamps. There are also numerous maps of mail routes to get the postal historian going.
I resisted buying "The Stamp Atlas" for quite awhile, on the theory that most of its information was available elsewhere. That may be true, but it's a lot easier to have the basics in one concise volume. The only complaint I have is that the book's 1986 publication date makes it useless for the postal history of the last few decades. However, since many stamp collectors cut off their collections before the very recent period, that's less of a problem that it sounds. But an updated addition would be much appreciated.
Don't leave home without it...........2002-04-22
This book is an invaluable reference for any stamp collector. If you collect worlwide stamps, owning this book is an absolute requirement!! It is well organized, very comprehensive and easy to use. Just owning this book has pointed out many holes in my collection by showing me the details of the political changes to which postage stamps are inherently tied. The world has changed much since 1986, however, and an updated version would be helpful at times.
