Book Description

From her time on the Atlanta police force, Callahan Garrity, house cleaner and private investigator extraordinaire, has excelled at mopping up messes -- of all kinds. But she has no idea what she's getting into when she agrees to work for infamous antiques dealer Elliot Littlefield.

The first day on the job she and her crew discover the bloodied body of a young woman in a bedroom -- and are soon on the trail of a priceless Civil War diary stolen by the killer. As if two crimes aren't enough, deadly serious collectors, right-wing radicals, and impulsive teenagers make the case even more difficult to tidy up ... and more dangerous.

4 out of 5 stars Great beach read.......2007-07-03

I read this book in record time. It was a fairly easy read but still interesting enough to make it difficult to put down. Fairly predictable ending, but it does keep you guessing until the end. Glad to have discovered "Callahan Garrity".

5 out of 5 stars Trocheck Can't BE Beat.......2006-12-20

I have read all of Kathy Hogan Trocheck's books many many times. She is the best writer of fiction that I have ever read. Callahan is one great sleuth. Also be sure to check out Mary Kay Andrews who is also Kathy Hogan Trocheck.
This book is set in Atlanta and she makes you feel if you are right there with Callahan. If you are familiar with the area, you will recognize a lot of the places that she mentions.

GREAT BOOK!

2 out of 5 stars Dixie was never intended to be so bad........2004-04-21

On the cover of this book is the warning: "This title may offend some readers." It wasn't the title but the language used by the writer which is offensive. She is apparently from Georgia, a Southern state, but her resentment and low view of the wealthy and educated people show her status in life.

Even though it mentions such Confederate generals as Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate states at the time of the Civil War, (and Abraham Lincoln, the President of the United States at the time), the only thing about Dixie is the theft of a diary purportedly written by a Civil War madam.

It reminds one of the movie IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL which also takes place in Georgia what with two murders by a prominent collector of antiques. Our investigator is a 'has-been' with the police department and now cleans houses for a living. She is crude, calculating, and not very professional.

Not at all what I thought I was getting into, but a slight diversion off the path of knowledge. At a recent talk about Nathan Bedford Forrest, a UT professor called him white trash, which I refuted most vociferously as he not only hadn't done his homework; he had Forrest as being from Memphis, and he was born in Chapel Hill, TN, (not too far from Shelbyville, home of the Tennessee Walking Horses), who proved to be one of the most brilliant officers and calvary tacticians of that war.

5 out of 5 stars Tight plotting - generally a good read.......2000-06-26

Try this author. She does not have the high public profile of some other female authors but she stands up there with the Graftons and Paretskys. This author has a lovely writing style and has created warm, believable characters. The mystery is compelling but I found myself wanting and enjoying more the dialogue and interaction between the characters.

5 out of 5 stars Another Reader Hooked !.......1999-09-07

This was my first read by Kathy and I will be back for more ! I really liked her style and the way your in suspense till the end .I thought Callahan was very beliveable and really liked her. I will be reading alot more of Kathys work. Lisa Miller

                          Book Description

The action in Tom Gilling's wickedly funny, magical novel, The Sooterkin, revolves around the bizarre birth of a child who appears to be more seal than human. As the extraordinary news spreads through the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land (present-day Tasmania) during the winter of 1821, mystified residents flock to investigate. The local reverend hypothesizes a virgin birth, but the town's resident science "expert" suspects that the pup may be akin to the mysterious sooterkin-a monstrous, mythical creature born to women in Holland. In spite of its unusual physiology, the child's mother and brother accept the family's newest member and protect it from the clutches of outsiders, who want to exploit the sooterkin baby for profit. In the tradition of The Secret of Roan Inish, The Sooterkin is the perfect summertime fairy tale.

                          4 out of 5 stars wonderful read.......2006-12-16

I really enjoyed this book. It is witty, funny, filled with whimsy and overall quite entertaining. You just have to be willing to go out on an imaginative whim; to call it a fable would not be misleading. It is well written and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a read that is unique and lighthearted.

Alright, so this one didn't turn out the way I hoped. I've had great success in the past when making a spontaneous literary purchase without knowing anything of the author or novel. Realizing that it's about a fifty/fifty chance of getting something enjoyable I figure why not take a chance. This one didn't pay off. "The Sooterkin" is a novel set on an 1820's Australian island. Gilling does an excellent job of recreating the town and its people in the imagination of the reader but was unable to keep this reader interested in the lives of the characters. The story takes a look at how the people of Van Diemen Land deal with the birth of a child that appears to be half human half seal. Although the town people's reaction range from the simply curious to the scientifically prodding, the family of the monster child embraces him for the blessing from God that he must surly be. This is a great idea for a story that certainly took a great deal of work on the part of the author but ultimately I believe the language and the style got in the way of the story for me. I couldn't quite appreciate it. There were a few funny moments but not enough to compensate for the effort to keep reading the story. With that said, I must give a nod to Gilling for writing one of the best hooks I've ever read: "Pardon the stench. You have hardly turned the page and a blast of putrid air has pricked your nostrils. The smell of mud and smoke and sickness, of spoiled meat and mouldy straw and slops left to rot in the street." What an excellent beginning. Good luck getting to the end.

Absorbing fable?? I was barely able to finish this book. I kept thinking, "It has to get better." It never did. Luckily it was bought on clearance.

                          4 out of 5 stars Delightfully different!.......2003-03-25

When I first picked up this book, I was expecting something along the lines of 'The Secret of Roan Innish'. It bears only the slightest resemblance to it, but is a worthwhile read in it's own right.

Gilling manages to evoke the atmosphere of colonial Van Diemen's Land very easily - virtually from the first sentence 'Pardon the stench.' His opening descriptions of the mud, the smells and the whaler's try-pots soon convince you that this is not a pleasant place to be.
His conversational tone when describing the Ship's Agent who can 'get you a berth out of here, if there are berths to be got' - is your first hint that there is real humour in this book.
The relationship between Ned and his 'brother' is touching and at times compelling. The mother and father are both realistic characters, as the incompetent and self-important Reverend, Mr Kidney. The relationship between Mr Kidney and his horse was one of the most amusing parts of the book!
Aside from the occassional use of colloquial language (which isn't strong) there is nothing in this book to prevent more mature children from enjoying it as well. It is certainly a wonderful first novel and I look forward to reading more from Mr Gilling.

3 out of 5 stars A nice book, but not straightforward ..........2002-06-21

The Sooterkin is a nice first novel, and it is interesting for most of its 200+ pages, but it is not a directly involving story. The conflict is spread out among its main characters, and it reads like a modern TV show with an ensemble cast. I liked the story, but if you are looking for a traditional novel with one main character, then this isn't for you.

The novel follows a minister on a cross country journey, a young boy looking for his "brother," a mother who may or may not have given birth to a seal, and assorted characters who come in and disappear quickly in this novel that takes place in 1800's Tasmania. Each of this vignette-style sections is interesting, but the whole comes up a bit shorter than the parts.

I look forward to Gilling's next effort as I think he'll develop into a fine novelist based on this, but for me, this was good but not brilliant. If you are interested in Austrailia and its environs, particularly in the area of historical fiction, try Matthew Kneale's English Passengers or Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang (both are superior novels).

If you want to work out at home but aren't quite sure where to start, then this is a book that will definitely get you headed in the right direction.

Readers should also consider this book if you: 1) have exercise equipment and want to get better results, or 2) plan to buy exercise equipment for your home.

In a nutshell, the book starts out giving you basic muscle anatomy and then jumps right into pictures of dozens and dozens of exercises that can be done with all kinds of stuff in your home AS WELL AS dumbell, barbells, and other equipment you can purchase and use with in your home. The book ends nicely with miscellaneous advice on things such as the best workout videos, training logs, and advice on personal trainers.

A great book all in all, it will provide the reader with a wealth of info- and since the book is almost 2 inches thick, you can always use it to lift up and down for exercise! Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for home exercisers who need help getting and staying motivated to exercise. Happy training!

Schuler has turned out a fair rudimentary book for the home gym user. It is a good "starter" book for kids and beginners.

4 out of 5 stars Great for both Home and Gym, Needs more Workouts.......2007-08-17

Great for begineers & more advanced users alike. Lots of exercises and plenty of variations of these exercises, plus ways to do similar exercises on different equipment. Simple, straightforward approach is refreshing. Easy to reference when looking to change up your routine. A good variety of ab exercises.

Only a few negatives that kept this from getting 5*. Limited number of actual workouts included, and not all of the workouts listed in the book give page numbers to reference each exercise (some do & some don't), plus would've liked for workout charts to show alternatives/substitutes for each exercise. Lastly would've liked a chapter dealing with common weight lifting injuries (such as rotator cuff).

Overall well worth the money IMO.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for any fitness level.......2007-05-15

I have been lifting in gyms for the past 4 years. This year, while home from college, I decided to try working out at home. I love how the book breaks weight training down into topic like muscle groups, equipment I can use at home, and step by step instructions of just about every home exercise imaginable. All of the exercises are grouped in chapters depending on what kind of equipment you already have and then broken down into beginner, intermediate, and advanced exercises. I especially enjoyed the chapters on goal setting and sample lift programs that give you charts to fill in your progress. The book also reads like a personal trainer is talking to you by throwing in puns and jokes to lighten the reading. I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to lift at home and for any skill level. I couldn't put this book down.

4 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes AND abilities.......2007-04-24

Ever since back when I was 12, when my dad had triple-bypass heart surgery, I've had more and more of a fitness mentality. When I was 12, luckily, there was a college gym nearby that I had a free membership to. One thing is, I worked out only at machines. I just liked them more, simple as that. And I was in amazing shape for the time.
As emphasized in this book, however, free weights are MUCH better than machines. After buying this book, I started by doing home exercises which required no equipment, mostly abdominal, but over this past Christmas my dad got me a barbell and pair of dumbbells, all the old-school black iron stuff. And let me tell you, I had to put more into it, but I'm lookin fitter than ever before, and my muscle mass is inSANE!
Machines only exercise certain basic muscle groups, and there's no balancing. Your muscles get a lot out of doing an exercise while adjusting to balance, especially your core muscles, and Men's Health Home Workout Bible definitely emphasizes that. There's a large number of usefull Swiss-ball workouts.
Also, if you don't know what kind of equipment to buy, there's a whole guide in there, which some people may find very useful.
One final thing. I took one star off this guide for the simple fact that in a given exercise they may say to use light dumbbells or heavy dumbbells. However, they never really specify, and lots of them should have specific comparative weights designated, for safety reasons. I say this because I really screwed my self up doing rotating dumbbell press.
Other than that, I think it earns a 5/5, and $30 or what ever it was- it's definitely worth the money.

Growing up in Morocco, Kitty Morse was struck by how many people still lived as their ancestors had in biblical times. This observation led her to wonder what people ate during the time of the Scriptures. Poring exhaustively through the Bible, she found many food references, such as the one for Esau's porridge, and another about a garden of cucumbers, but only the text of Ezekiel 4:9 regarding bread came close to being a recipe. So Morse delved into other sources, from the Dead Sea Scrolls to archaeological data. In A Biblical Feast, she draws reasonable and enlightening conclusions from the information she gleaned. For biblical cooks, "Low cooking (stewing), rather than roasting or frying, was their favorite method of cooking.... The ancient Hebrews prepared and ate most foods with their hands."

Morse lists all the foods mentioned in the King James Bible, but assumes there were others, too, because the writers of the Old and New Testaments were, logically, more concerned with theology and other events than with "botanical, zoological, and culinary matters."

Biblical cooks had no sugar for sweetening, only reduced syrups from dates, pomegranates, and other fruit. Morse also explains what grains were available and how they were used. There are recipes you will enjoy, such as Toasted Ground Almond and Sesame Dip; Chicken, Leek, and Garbanzo Bean Stew; and Apricots with Pomegranate Seeds and Toasted Nuts in Honey Syrup. Many of the recipes, reflecting ancient times and ingredients, produce bland results, such as Barley Cakes, which are mostly of historical interest. A Biblical Feast is recommended for teachers and for those who might use its information in family activities. --Dana Jacobi

Moroccan raised cook and cookbook author researches and produces an exceptional cookbook on biblical land cuisine, not to invent any biblical haute extravaganza, but to provide examples of what the Lord and apostles might have dined on.

The layout adorning these recipes and commentary is neat --- it's sort of a faux ancient look and feel, which with the Biblical text quoted with each recipe, creates an unusual and attractive backdrop for this collection.

These are not hard recipes to prepare either technique wise nor ingredients. They are basic and using foodstuffs of that age: lamb and goat and olives and wine and nuts and wheat and beans and spices and leeks, etc.

This is well researched and produced with nice written comments throughout. I've tried several: Flatbread with Cheese and Melon; Barley Gruel with Honey, Dates and Raisins; Pomegranate Honey-Glazed Grilled Fish (unbelievable that tilapia was likely fish of Jesus' choice). They are edible and enjoyable and takes one away from all frills to basics.

This is fascinating book to use and to give as meaningful gift.

Now this is a book to be cherished. The author has taken a good amount of time exploring the actual foods from biblical times and creating/discovering recipes that we can all enjoy. This book is great for both the anthropolical reader as well as the gourmand. It is worth owning if this is your area of interest.

Originally stumbled across this gem of a reference/cookbook in the cooking section of the public library. Found it fascinating. In 2000 I used it to plan & prepare "Biblical finger foods" for a Maundy Thursday service at the church I belong to. We served all the foods from handmade pottery and baskets on a bed of palm fronds (from Palm Sunday). Along with the Lenten music program provided by our choir and a slide presentation of the Holy Land narrated by our pastor the Biblical foods were one aspect of a very moving "multi-media" evening for over 100 people. I can't wait to have my own copy.

Rabbits are popular domesticated pets, but many develop problems because of living conditions that do not allow them to follow their behavioral instincts. This guide to troubleshooting rabbit behavior clues owners in to the history of the domesticated rabbit and describes how rabbits live and breed. Common problems among rabbit owners are discussed, as are probable causes for irregular behavior, including instincts that make rabbits behave in certain ways. Both hutch and house rabbits, as well as troubles specific to each, are covered.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, Informative Book On Rabbit Behavior.......2007-02-23

I read this book straight through the day I bought it, and it was a fascinating book on rabbit behavior. It was a good book to read through, and it provided a whole lot of information about rabbit behavior. I'm going to have to read it multiple times to glean all of the information it presented.

There were some things that bothered me though. Because the heart of the book, information dealing with specific rabbit behaviors and how best to deal with them, was based on letters from specific people with specific rabbits a lot of the information was too specific, and as such many, many behaviors were missing, although I suppose it would be impossible to cover all of them.

Another thing that I found difficult was that it was written from a very Brittish perspective, so some of the terms and information were at best unrelatable and at worse contridictary to the way things are in America. I suppose this is something that is rather hard to avoid considering she is in England and all the experience and research as the base of this book is from there.

All in all, this was a very good book, but for me the omissions and cultural differences lowered the book's overall appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Now I know why my rabbit..........2006-11-10

Before you buy one, read up! Before you give up on a bunny, read this book! Before you know it, your bunny with be your buddy, too! My bunny and I bonded immediately but he wasn't always mindful of my rules... now I know why he needs to dig and chew and I provide alternatives for him. He has his own bedroom that has been completely bunny-proofed and is allowed in the half of the house that has no carpet. Cords are covered in cloth and he seems to leave them alone now. He is the best pet I have ever had and is as affectionate as a dog and as playful as a cat. He is litter trained, and I feed him only vegies and hay. This book helped me understand his fear of being in the open yard with me, and to expect him to chew and dig because he is a rabbit.

                            3 out of 5 stars Didn't help me..........2005-09-08

I got this book from the library, after my shipment was canceled by the sender. I am happy I didn't pay for it, as it did not help me at all. I wanted to know why my rabbit did normal things, like running around our legs, pooing around his litterbox, ect. This book only covered major problems that people might have with a rabbit, like aggressivness, stealing food or clothes, and fear. If your bunny is fine, get it from the library. If your bunny has some issues, get it from the libary, and read how to stop it. If your bunny needs a lot of help with many issues, then I think the book would be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone with rabbits........2004-03-15

This is the most comprehensive easy-to-read book on rabbit behavior I have found. I've had rabbits for five years and read a lot about their behavior. However, this book taught me so much more. I now have a much better understanding of why my rabbits do the things they do. What I especially like about this book is that it addresses issues for both indoor and outdoor rabbits. I didn't realize how many mistakes I was making when I let my rabbits "roam free" outside in nice weather. For example, I did not realize that vast, open spaces in the outdoors are frightening for rabbits, especially if they don't have some enclosure in which to hide. I will not make that mistake again.

Overall, this is an excellent book. It has given me much deeper insight into my rabbits' behaviors.

5 out of 5 stars Help! My rabbit is Driving Me Crazy!.......2003-06-12

Rabbits can be irresistible. It is not uncommon for people to visit a pet store or go to a county fair and come home with a rabbit. How much trouble can such a cute critter be? Plenty! Rabbits are curious creatures that seem to get themselves in trouble all of the time. Since rabbits are "prey" rather than predators, they act quite differently from dogs and cats, which often requires a different approach to care. Rabbits also have very distinct personalities. The personality of a rabbit needs to be taken into consideration when owning a rabbit. With know legible advice, rabbits can be fantastic pets. Books such as Why Does My Rabbit...? can be indispensable in caring and loving a pet rabbit.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with care of the rabbit, the second part discusses scientific information about the rabbit. The third portion of the book is probably most helpful. It is an alphabetical listing of just about any imaginable aspect of caring for a pet rabbit. The book is enjoyable to read because the author is not only an expert on animals as pets, she is also a rabbit lover. This book will be very helpful for people considering a rabbit as a pet and a true gift for those who have acquired a rabbit, have fallen in love with it, but don't know what to do with this adorable little rascal that seems to find mischief in every possible place.

4 out of 5 stars Collectible Card Game Checklists.......2005-09-23

I like the item. My only problem with it was the fact that it only covered a certain time peroid for the CCG that i was collecting at the time. This meant that i didn't have the entire lists of all the sagas in the CCG. Other than that it was a great help for what i was looking for. I recommend this product to others and hope they enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Useful for Anyone Involved in C.C.G.s.......2001-09-04

While appearing to be merely a checklist and resource for collectors attempting to catalog their collections of cards for various collectible card games, the many and varied types of information provided in Miller and Greenholdt's encyclopedic volume actually have valuable details ready to assist everyone- from the most casual players to the hard-core enthusiasts.

This veritable tome on collectible card games does contain a complete list of cards and prices for every game and every expansion to every game published in the English language up until the book's publication date in 2001. Additionally, it contains some lists of cards for expansions and games slated to come out after its publication date, but no prices are given for sets not available on the secondary market at the book's press time. These lists are very complete, and are specially tailored to each individual game. Thus, the lists can provide extra info such as the color, type (creature, instant, etc.), and rarity of every magic card; the alignment (light or dark), type, and rarity of every Star Wars card; and other type and rarity information modified for each individual game. The lists also place a checkbox next to every card name, allowing you to mark which cards you acquire.

However, it is not only the lists, but the extra info that truly makes this first-of-its-kind book shine. First, every game and every expansion has a short essay preceding the card list in which experienced players and "industry insiders" discuss the merits and flaws of the game. These discussions are usually very helpful in determining the quality of a game you have never seen, and are a remarkable resource for anyone trying to decide which new collectible card game to begin playing, or which expansion to buy into for a current game. These essays often contain a brief version of the game's mechanics, as well as how the game was received in the general market. Also, other bits of info, such as what the company was doing or planning when a particular set was released is in these essays, helping you to see how the themes and cards of the sets link together (or how they were supposed to link together). Additionally, special boxed sets and other unusual releases sometimes get their own mini-essay, a nice extra touch.

As useful as the essays are, Scrye has gone further, giving every game (not expansion) no less than 4 different 5-star ratings: one each for the quality of the game's concept, game play, card art, and the size and availability of its player pool. Providing an alternative to reading the essay (or a reminder of what it contains), these ratings help to sum up the reviewers' impressions of the game in each different area, and also allow you to focus on one specific issue most important to you (game play, for example).

Aware that their readers would be unfamiliar with many of the games in this volume, Miller and Greenholdt have provided a number of different tools to help readers navigate through the releases of unfamiliar games. Most impressively, there is a full-color section containing pictures of the backs of a card from every game, as well as the fronts of one or more types of cards from every game. This allows you to identify a card's parent game by appearance, and also gives you an idea of the quality and style of artwork on games you haven't seen (which may help you decide whether to purchase some of that game). Next to the card art in the color section, there are complete lists of every expansion for each game, neatly categorized into basic sets, expansions, and special sets, useful for quick reference of all the parts of a large game such as Magic: The Gathering. Also in the color section is a guide to determining a card's physical quality (poor, good, fine, near mint, or mint), an extra bonus.

All this would have been enough to make the Scrye CCG Checklist and Price Guide more than worthwhile, but there is still more excellent info stored within its hundreds of pages. In the front, there is a time line, organized by date, of every release for every game in the book. Also in the front are a variety of introductions, some on the general trends in CCG during each year, some on determining how to sell your cards and what price you might expect (there is even a page on online card auctions), and a foreword by Peter Adkison, the founder of Wizards of the Coast, the company that created Magic: The Gathering. And yet, there is still more! In the appendices, there is info about CCGs in foreign languages, about the collectible miniatures game Mage Knight, and even a section on "pseudo-collectible card games," or card games that had interesting features or were similar to CCGs, but were not truly part of the genre.

Miller and Greenholdt have created an amazing volume of valuable information for almost anyone involved in collectible card games in any way. From the exhaustingly thorough listings to the helpful essays and introductions, The Scrye Collectible Card Game Checklist and Price Guide is an invaluable tool and a fine chronicle of a new genre of game that could only be fated to grow in the years ahead.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2001-05-09

I found Mr. Miller's book extremely helpful. I was really surprised to find the Christian game "Redemption" in there but was pleased to see it. If you are an avid CCG player you must have this book.

This is a great product! It gives valuable, accurate information for tons of CCG's and many checklists. Althought the system for card organization can be rather confusing at first, after a while one gets used to it and it becomes even easier to locate the cards you wish to have priced! A Great Value!

I purchased this book because the pictures shown were interesting and something different - a good start, so I thought! The instructions however are seriously lacking in detail. Regardless of whether or not you are competent or familiar with origami, Mrs Hiney's instructions, or lack of, will be the source of serious frustration and major headaches! Be prepared to do major research on your own to get proper instructions.

                                    Book Description

This volume deals with the numerous grammatical passages included in the voluminous Kitab al-bAyn, the earliest Arabic dictionary (8th century). This material is isolated and classified according to its various grammatical categories and then analyzed, taking due account of the current knowledge of the state of Arabic grammar in its early stage of development. The much disputed attribution of Kitaab al-bAyn to macboogalib. Ahmad is reconsidered from the vantage point of this grammatical material. This reconsideration involves a critical study of the vast medieval literature about macboogalil's personality and the question of attribution of this early Arabic dictionary. In addition to the author's analysis, the volume is appended by a citation of the original grammatical passages of this dictionary with useful indices.

                                      Book Description

In this bold and innovative memoir, part travel narrative, part spiritual quest, prize-winning author Daniel Asa Rose describes the remarkable journey in which he and his two young sons retraced their relatives' escape from Antwerp during the Second World War and also embraced, with ample amounts of wit and irreverence, the Jewish heritage that had pained and mystified him.

In the wake of his divorce, Rose searches for something that will repair the damage done to his splintered family. He and the boys need to be connected to something larger than themselves; they need inoculation against evil. Rose wants to reclaim their roots and plant them deep; to resolve their dislocation so that they might all be, if not at peace, at least in context. But ultimately, the trip is about finding out why he wants to take the trip, and, as with all important journeys, this is achieved in ways the travelers could not have predicted.

As they wind through the Belgian and French countryside in search of the barn lofts and wine cellars where their relatives once hid, Rose presents razor-sharp reminiscences of the hiding places he himself used as a boy in the WASP town of Rowayton, Connecticut. The author, whose own Jewishness was largely invisible and conflicted during his childhood, beautifully conjures up his angry, impassioned struggle to find a sense of self. Through ingenious detective work and serendipitous encounters, he and the boys scout out the family hiding places, including a brothel frequented by Göring and an unknown synagogue in Paris that managed to stay open through the war, until memoir and modern-day quest converge in the shattering conclusion: father and sons are lost amid the faded swastikas of a desolate transit camp in southern France where horrors unfolded half a century before.

For all the searing pathos, however, Hiding Places is essentially a book of victory. The old Belgian aunts and uncles survived by their luck and their wits; they outfoxed Hitler. And throwing themselves into the quest, Rose and his sons triumph, too. In this luminous and large-hearted odyssey, Rose introduces the Holocaust and its lessons to a new generation and, in the process, heals his childhood wounds in a way that will resonate with all readers, Jew and non-Jew alike, who are interested in their own hidden places.

4 out of 5 stars The significance of the little girls on the cover..........2003-01-28

I was first drawn to this book by a haunting picture of two little girls on the book cover. I was impatient to learn their significance. I had to wait. In the opening of this story, the author relates his fear of the Not-sees (Nazi) as told to him throughout his youth by his mother who escaped Europe.

However, in an effort to come to grips with being Jewish and to learn the truth about what his family endured during World War II, an American divorced father and his two sons begin a quest to retrace the steps of an uncle who endured the Holocaust. Using a tattered journal's clues they searched for his hiding places and learned more than they expected about the war and its victims. Only after finding where and how the twins died did the author understand his great-uncles, other family members, and his mother. During the trip he also realizes what it means to be a father.

I could not appreciate the cover of this book until I learned the fate of the Jewish twin sisters and others who suffered.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Father's Day............2001-06-04

An inspiring, thoughtful and funny book. A father is retracing his family's escape route fifty years later. While teaching his two sons history, family lore, geography and much about human courage and frailty, the author learns much about family bonds, love and loyalty from his sons. The boys add common sense to a voyage with a lot of bagage and helps the author resolve some difficult family issues. The book is serious and entertaining at the same time. You laugh and cry with the author and wish the book would not end. An obvious Father's Day gift -or for any sensitive person you may want to give some reading pleasure!

5 out of 5 stars A journey of discovery for the reader as well as the writer.......2001-04-14

Daniel Rose grew up in Connecticut, in a lobster fishing town. He always felt different because of his Jewishness even though his family was assimilated. Later, after a fractured marriage, he wanted his young sons, aged 7 and 12 to really understand their heritage, especially in terms of the Holocaust, and so he took them to Europe to discover their roots. They looked up relatives who had survived the horror and still lived in Belgium, and from there they set out on a journey to retrace the actual events of the life one of their relatives, an ancient eccentric old man who gave them his diary as a roadmap.

In addition, in alternating chapters, we learn of Mr. Rose's Connecticut boyhood. Not only does he describe the events, but he's able to recapture every nuance of feeling that must have been difficult to dredge up from memory. He makes fun of his orthodox relatives, he battles the school bully, but most of all, he keeps coming back to the recurrent theme of the book --his hiding places.

Foremost though, is his relationship with his own sons, and the unique loving relationship between the three of them. Some of the things that they were exposed to on the trip were not pleasant, but they all came through it enriched by the experience. This was a difficult subject to write about, but somehow Mr. Rose managed to do it with humor. While I didn't laugh out loud, I found myself smiling throughout.

There's a lot of detail in the book, each one adding further insight into each of the characters. It's more than just description; the reader really feels the emotion. There's mystery here too as well as unsolved questions. And there sure is a lot to think about. Afterwards, I couldn't get the book out of my mind and I don't know if I ever will. I must thank Mr. Rose for writing it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another Holocaust story.......2001-01-23

Hiding Places by Daniel Asa Rose is many stories in one. It's the story of a young boy growing up and how he perceives his differences and ways he tries to blend in or hide. It's the story of a father and two sons trying to forge a relationship with each other after divorce, and it's about one family's experience of hiding to survive the horrors of the Holocaust.

The book is honest and forthright. Daniel Asa Rose has opened up a window into his feelings about growing up Jewish in a predominantly WASP Connecticut town. This reader was able to relate, not so much to the hiding borne out of cultural and religious differences, but to the hiding that kids do because they feel that no one else has the same thoughts. Daniel Asa Rose gives a voice to those childhood thoughts that most of us have kept silent.

The author reveals himself to be a caring father, one who misses his sons greatly after his divorce and seeks to find a way to create a whole family out of the three of them. He doesn't spend much time talking about how painful the divorce itself was to him, but this shows through in the writing. This is not something seen from a male perspective too often. There are sure to be other fathers out there who will resonate with this aspect of the book.

Lastly, Daniel Asa Rose creates a portrait of his relative, J.P. Morgan (not THE J.P. Morgan) and his particular experience of survival during the Holocaust. At times, it is painful to read, but because it is the story of a singular person, it takes on greater significance than observing the Holocaust as a whole. J.P.'s survival and the tracking of his hiding places by Rose and his sons is nothing short of miraculous. But wouldn't most of those who survived the Holocaust describe their experience as such?

It's tempting to condemn this father for exposing his sons to the horrors of the Holocaust at the tender ages of seven and twelve. Without debating the issue too much, the final verdict is really up to his sons, Alex and Marshall--after all, it's a family thing.

5 out of 5 stars A warm and compelling narrative that brings memory to life.......2000-11-12

This book touches the reader on many levels, and you may be drawn in to the writer's childhood experience as an outsider striving to find ways to fit in, while marveling at his opportunity to retrace an ancestor's flight from terror, and transfixed by the relationships that are recalled (and are still forming) in this book.

For many of us, the holocaust is more fully appreciated in personal terms than in the abstract. This book doesn't just fetch the truth from the past, it carries memory forward. For a generation twice removed, and more fully assimiliated, Hiding Places is both an intriguing real life story and an inspiring lesson in how the past still echoes.
